City council set for influx of newcomers District 2 incumbent unseated; Alston ahead in neck-and-neck race for District 4 seat BY ELLIS ARNOLD EARNOLD@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Come January, Centennial City Council will have three newcomers, but in the days following the Nov. 7 election, it was only known who two of those new members will be. That’s because the District 4 race among Marlo Alston, Charlette Fleming and John Miquel was still too close to call, with fewer than 20 votes separating Alston and Fleming. The council will lose incumbent C.J. Whelan, who chose to run for mayor instead of seeking re-election Alston on council, and incumbent Doris Truhlar, who lost in District 2. District 4. Councilmember Stephanie Piko defeated Whelan in the mayor’s race, and will become the third mayor in the city’s history. All new elected officials in Centennial will be sworn in at the city council meeting on Jan. 8. Time will tell who will be among them in District 4 — Alston stayed ahead of Fleming by about 0.3 percent, or 16 votes, as of results on Nov. 9. Alston said she “absolutely” claimed the victory, though, adding that she was confident in the win over Fleming and Miquel, who was only 105 votes behind Fleming with 4,789 total votes cast in the race. “I’m expecting it to hold,” Alston said. “I know the district pretty well, and the likelihood they would shift (against me) — I’m not expecting that.” Fleming still was feeling good about the race, though. “I did not think it would be this close,” said Fleming, who said she’s looking forward to serving. Like most candidates across the

HOW ELECTION RESULTS STACKED UP As of the afternoon of Nov. 9, results for contested races (rounded to the nearest tenth of 1 percent): Mayoral race Stephanie Piko — 55.4 percent Charles “C.J.” Whelan — 44.6 percent 24,243 total votes cast City council District 4 Marlo Alston — 34.3 percent Charlette Fleming — 34 percent John Miquel — 31.8 percent 4,789 total votes cast City council District 2 Tamara Hunter-Maurer — 42 percent Doris Truhlar — 28.9 percent Nancy Nickless — 15 percent Bennett Rutledge — 14.1 percent 6,015 total votes cast Source: Arapahoe County Clerk and Recorder’s Office board in the Centennial election races, District 4’s candidates didn’t appear to differ much on the issues — all three were for some concept of “smart growth.” And Alston and Fleming both encouraged spurring opportunities for businesses while also nodding to the priorities of neighborhoods. Fleming said she wants to establish a shuttle service among Centennial’s top employers to allow employees to park in a designated area in the city Fleming and be transported from there to their jobs. That would ease traffic congestion and take cars off the road, she said. She also wanted to establish incubators for entreprenuers and companies trying to

start up. More multi-use developments where people can “work, live, play and thrive” is the right way for the city to grow, she said. Alston said she would look at the current council’s direction to determine the best way to grow. She wants to bring more businesses and restaurants to District 4 but said she’d have to look at what the processes are for incentivizing that and refer to past councilmembers. “But I definitely do know that I want any business coming into Centennial to have the best interests of our city and their employees in mind,” Alston said. The city should work with neighboring Aurora and the Cornerstar shopping center at East Arapahoe Road and South Parker Road — which is part of Aurora though partially surrounded by Centennial — to ease traffic congestion, she said. The small margin between Alston and Fleming wouldn’t warrant a recount unless it got even smaller — by law, a recount would be held only if the difference between their votes was less than or equal to one-half of 1 percent of the leaders’s vote count. That means that if the difference was equal to or less than about 8.2 votes — that’s 0.5 percent of Alston’s count of 1,642 votes — a recount would be triggered. Ballots that remained to be processed included those sent by military and overseas voters, ballots with signature discrepancies or missing signatures, and ballots from voters who were required to provided identification with their mail ballots but failed to do so. The Arapahoe County Clerk and Recorder’s Office continued to receive all of those types of ballots through Nov. 15, according to Haley McKean, spokeswoman for the office. Ballots that were dropped off at boxes in other counties by 7 p.m. on Election Day were retreived by the Arapahoe County office on Nov. 8, McKean said. A recount would only occur after the county certifies the election results, which by law must happen by Nov. 24 and would likely happen Nov. 21, McKean said. Fleming is a senior accounting consultant for AxxessConnect, a telecommunications and information technology service provider. She touted her

experience in finance and accounting as a reason she’d come prepared to council. Alston is a “military wife” and mother of military veterans. She works in workers’ compensation claims management. She has sat on the city’s Open Space Advisory Board and was a homeowners association vice president and board member. She has held several positions in the Aurora NAACP. Transportation, infrastructure expertises In the race for District 2’s open council seat, Tamara Hunter-Maurer took the win handily over incumbent Doris Truhlar, Nancy Nickless and Bennett Rutledge. She’s looking to bring her know-how as an engineer with the Colorado Department of Transportation, or CDOT, to tackle transportation matters in the city. “Transportation is one of my big things Hunterbeause I deal with Maurer that every day,” said Hunter-Maurer, who has lived in what’s now Centennial for 34 years. “Looking at bicycles and pedestrian movement — those are things people care about.” Hunter-Maurer would like to work with neighboring cities like Greenwood Village and Littleton, as well as CDOT, to manage transportation matters related to roadways, bicycle paths and trails. On development, the city should cultivate businesses that will support its growing number of senior citizens and young families, she said. The budget will be the biggest challenge ahead, Hunter-Maurer said, if the city wants to do more work on roads and other infrastructure. “The city has done an incredible job at maintaining its services within budget ... but if you want to do more improvements, you’re looking at where (to get) that funding,” HunterMaurer said. Hunter-Maurer is a professional engineer with a focus on transportation, roads and construction. She has served on CenCON, the Centennial SEE COUNCIL, P8

Brauchler drops governor bid, jumps into attorney general race District attorney moves to replace Cynthia Coffman STAFF REPORT

Citing the bowing out of state Attorney General Cynthia Coffman from the race to keep her seat, Republican George Brauchler announced his switch from the 2018 race for governor to vie for the attorney general spot. Brauchler, district attorney for the 18th Judicial District, has positioned himself, so far, as the only conservative in the race to replace Coffman, a Republican, in the November 2018 election. “Progressives on the other side of the political aisle had spent many months raising mountains of cash to capture the position that plays such a vital role in protecting our state

and way of life,” Brauchler said in an emailed statement. Brauchler presently faces five opponents, all Democrats, according to filings with the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office: Michael Dougherty, the assistant district attorney for the 1st Judicial District, which includes Jefferson and Gilpin counties; Brad Levin, an attorney in Denver; Amy Padden, former Brauchler assistant Colorado attorney general and former executive assistant United States attorney for the District of Colorado; state Rep. Joe Salazar, a civil rights attorney from Thornton; and Philip Weiser, former deputy assistant attorney general in the Obama administration.

Referencing concern from friends, supporters and members of the business community about the possibility of a progressive, activist attorney general, Brauchler said the office is “a powerful position that must not fall into the hands of someone who would use it to advance extreme ideological positions, to legislate through litigation or to pick winners and losers in our economy.” Brauchler’s Nov. 13 annoucement came less than a week after Coffman announced her bid for governor Nov. 8. Brauchler was elected district attorney in 2012 and re-elected after running unopposed in 2016. The 18th Judicial District encompasses Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties. He gained nationwide recognition for prosecuting the case against Aurora theater shooter James Holmes, calling the case “the biggest trial in

the history of the state.” Brauchler has lived in Colorado for 45 years, currently residing in Parker with his wife and four children. He attended the University of Colorado, Boulder, and later graduated from the University of Colorado School of Law. He is a colonel in the Colorado Army National Guard. Brauchler on April 5 had announced his candidacy for governor. He said Gov. John Hickenlooper has showed a “lack of real leadership at the state level.” Brauchler said he wants tougher sentences for violent criminals. During his run for governor, Brauchler said he would push for stronger minimum sentences for DUI and homicide offenders. Coffman enters a gubernatorial race that has more than 20 candidates seeking to replace John Hickenlooper, a term-limited Democrat.

Is carpet cleaning on your holiday checklist?

As we prepare for guests this holiday season, many of our to-do lists include carpet cleaning. A simple thing like professional carpet cleaning could pollute our stormwater. Water used in the cleaning process contains yucky stuff that nobody wants in the waterways. If carpet cleaning is on your list, make sure the water is disposed of in the toilet or down a floor drain. Ask your professional how they dispose of the carpet cleaning liquid. And remember never dump it in the street. Local stormwater agencies are teaming together to bring you this message. We take this so seriously that we posted this ad rather than send you more garbage in the mail. One thing is clear: our creeks, rivers and lakes depend on you.

$150 Mayor Cathy Noon sits on a swing at Centennial Center Park Oct. 31. The park, which sits just behind Civic Center, opened in 2012 during Noon’s tenure. ELLIS ARNOLD

GIFT CARD

Soon-to-be former mayor helped city build identity Cathy Noon’s involvement in Centennial started before her tenure as an elected leader BY ELLIS ARNOLD EARNOLD@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

When Cathy Noon shared a stage with Olympians, she knew her city had made it. Noon was aware that young Centennial was still forming an identity. “Who knows who we are?” Noon thought at the time. What once was a swath of unincorporated Arapahoe County had literally made its mark on the map, but was not yet prominent in the public eye. But when state legislators, Gov. John Hickenlooper and hordes of young fans converged on Centennial Center Park to celebrate Colorado’s Olympic athletes in August 2012, Noon, mayor since 2010, knew it was a defining moment. “Suddenly, we have this incredible woman swimming her heart out, and it’s ‘Missy Franklin from Centennial, Colorado!’ all over,” Noon said. It “was just an amazing moment — like, we are a city now. We have arrived. We had a community spirit. We needed that, and it carried us forward.” The journey from incipient suburb to innovative community was long, but Noon, 61, was there every step of the way. Noon has nearly reached the end of her term-limited eight years in the seat, and Stephanie Piko will be sworn into the post in January. But her long road through public life will give way to a retirement in which she’ll stay engaged in local affairs. “Centennial, we’re just getting going,” Noon said. “So, I’m excited for the future.”

Humble beginnings In the late 1990s, when Noon and her husband bought a house in what would eventually become Centennial — in a neighborhood along East Arapahoe Road east of South Parker Road — she had no idea that the idea of founding a city was being discussed. “I just got drafted as a worker bee,” said Noon, whom neighbors asked to represent them on the Arapahoe County Council of Organized Responsible Development — a former group of neighborhood organizations — after she went to a homeowner’s association meeting. Noon jumped into the fray as the push to create the city was well on its way, putting up fliers and “doing menial tasks” for the effort, she said. At the time, Greenwood Village was considering annexing land in parts of what is now Centennial. Citizens in the area were concerned about losing their self-determination and enlisted in a push that took more than two years, 100 town meetings and going through a process that ended in a Colorado Supreme Court ruling in July 2000 that green-lighted the election to form a city. Two months later, 77 percent of voters approved Centennial’s formation — and Noon played a key role in getting the city off the ground. Members of ACCORD broke off and formed CenCON, or the Centennial Council of Neighborhoods, to keep citizens close to decisions about their city. CenCON was a sounding board for Centennial’s government as it came up with different policies, said Noon, who was the organization’s president and founder. Centennial had nearly no staff at the beginning, Noon said, and CenCON became a de facto information center for what was going on in the city. Years later, in 2007-08, Noon was a key player in the push to make Centennial a home-rule city — one that could follow its own charter rather

than the statewide municipal code. Citizens voted to create a commission to establish a charter, and Noon became chair of the 21-member group. “It was a 10-10 tie between me and another person — we flipped a coin, and I won the coin toss,” said Noon, who stood at grocery-store tables and campaigned for the charter, which passed by a margin of more than 2-to1. I “might not have been mayor if I had not chaired it.” That charter in part allowed the city to collect and audit its own sales tax instead of Colorado, Noon said — previously, hundreds of businesses were giving sales tax to cities like Aurora and Littleton because of Centennial’s snaking boundaries and because mailing addresses from those other cities still existed in Centennial. Millions more dollars were then freed up to go to the city’s public works, filling potholes and snowplowing, Noon said. Noon said it yielded “more autonomy and more self-determination, which is what the city was founded on.” Taking the helm Amid her ongoing civic efforts, Noon took an unsuccessful swing at running for city council in 2005. But that didn’t slow her momentum — she ran for mayor in 2009 and won by more than 1,000 votes. She said hammering out the charter with 20 other citizens renewed her faith in the political system, and afterward, a fellow commissioner urged her to run for mayor. “My number one reason (for running) was that I wanted that charter to be implemented in the spirit in which it was written,” Noon said. Councilmember C.J. Whelan said there have been many times Noon helped him in challenging situations. “From times when we were both on CenCON and dealing with the review of development plans to our SEE NOON, P15

Group aims to boost Coloradans’ mental health STAFF REPORT

Colorado routinely make tshe list as one of the physically healthiest states in the union, but a new effort by the organization Mental Health Colorado strives to make Colorado the mentally healthiest state too. The group’s president, former Colorado state Rep. Andrew Romanoff, said the new data dashboard that just launched on the group’s website offers Coloradans a chance to see where they stand in terms of mental health and substance abuse disorders. “Previously you would have had to go to several dozen sources to get all this information,” said Romanoff. The dashboard — available at www. mentalhealthcolorado.org/dashboard/ — presents information including suicide rates and prevention, mental

health issues, opioid overdose rates and even barriers to care. The information is sortable by county, and links to the source documents. The results are middling. Colorado continues to rank below average for psychiatric beds per captia, and has a persistently higher rate of drug and alcohol addiction, along with a higher suicide rate. “We’re also below the national average for funding on treatment,” Romanoff said. Mental Health Colorado’s intent in putting out the dashboard is to reduce the stigma and increase public awareness of mental health disorders, including substance abuse disorders like those caused by the opiate epidemic. A second goal, according to Romanoff, is to hopefully “accelerate a solution” by inspiring and empowering the public,

mental health organizations and government at all levels into action. Last week Eagle County voters passed a marijuana tax measure by a nearly 3-1 margin, generating $1.2 million in new mental health funding. “We’re trying to show that if you treat mental illness you can save lives,” said Romanoff. In a press statement, Mental Health Colorado Research Director, Dr. Sarah Davidon said, “Our data dashboard will assess mental health and substance use issues facing children, adolescents, and adults in Colorado to inform policy decisions.” The group estimates more than one million Coloradans experience a mental health or substance use disorder each year. Fewer than half get treatment. Romanoff says the cause of improving mental health is personal for him. A cousin committed suicide on New Years Day in 2015 after struggling with

mental illness. “She hid those symptoms really well, even from us,” Romanoff said. “If she had any other condition, a bump, a lump, she wouldn’t have hid it from us, and we wouldn’t have hesitated to get her care.” The dashboard is not without its limitations. Romanoff acknowledges that some of the studies used to compile the data are not done annually, and some rely on self reporting. Overall, he said the size of Colorado’s mental health needs are probably only conservatively reflected in the dashboard figures. Beyond the data, the website includes a tab for individuals looking for ways to connect to local officials to advocate for change, and also a tab for people to share their personal stories of struggling with mental health — both things that Romanoff says the group hopes will spark real change for the better.

Former Lone Tree mayor seeks place in Congress Jim Gunning announces his run for House District 4 position TABATHA DEANS STEWART TSTEWART@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Former Lone Tree Mayor Jim Gunning announced he is seeking the Republican nomination for Colorado’s 4th Congressional District seat, in a gathering of more than 50 people in front of the Freedom Keeper monument on Wilcox Street in Castle Rock on Nov. 10. “America is incredibly divided, and we Gunning need to look for leadership to bring us back together,” said Gunning, who is aiming to be the GOP nominee for the post in the November 2018 election. Supporters applauded Gunning as he declared his intentions to advocate on the behalf of 4th District residents. “Nuclear issues demand toughness. At home we have a drug crisis that needs addressed, and Congress must find a solution to health care,” he said. “We won’t compromise our children’s future for political gain today.” District 4 includes Parker, Lone

The two-term Lone Tree mayor said “The government should work for us, not rule us.” TABATHA STEWART Tree, Castle Rock, Elbert County, much of Colorado’s Eastern Plains, and areas north of the Denver metro area. The sprawling district borders Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico, and its 38,103-square-mile area covers more than a third of Colorado. It has been represented since January 2015 by Republican Ken Buck, of Windsor, who

is in his second term. Gunning served two terms as the mayor of Lone Tree, where he has lived for 20 years, and said keeping in touch with residents is vital for any successful official. “When I was mayor of Lone Tree, citizen input made the difference in determining action and priorities. COUNCIL FROM PAGE 16

Council of Neighborhoods, as a second vice president, and as president of the Ridgeview Hills North Civic Association. Soon-to-be Mayor Piko will bring her experience as vice-chair of the city’s Fiber Commission, which oversees Centennial’s effort to create a fiber-optic cable backbone to boost the city’s internet capabilities. That project will enable the city to time its traffic lights more accurately to traffic flows by enhancing its sysPiko tem of traffic cameras and sensors. Better internet capabilities will open the door to other improved city operations, too — police, firefighters and medical responders would also benefit from getting real-time updates about traffic and accidents. State Sen. Jack Tate, who represents a district that includes Centennial, was pleased with Piko’s election. “I’m just very glad Mayor-elect Piko will be in office for the next four years leading Centennial in

a positive direction,” said Tate, a Republican. Rich Sokol, chair of the Arapahoe County Republican Party, also attended the gathering. Piko is a substitute teacher for the Cherry Creek School District and an office manager and information-technology support for Intelinet Imaging, a teleradiology service provider. She sat on the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission from 2008-11 and chaired the Open Space Advisory Board from 2007-11. She’s the current mayor pro tem and is in her second term on city council. Outgoing incumbents look back Doris Truhlar, incumbent in District 2, said it was hard to lose, but she hopes Hunter-Maurer will serve the area well. “I loved serving on city council — it’s one of the best things I ever did,” Truhlar said. “It’s a big disappointment for me.” Truhlar said she’s proud of the efforts on council she was involved in, which included nearly doubling the budget that pertains to streets and sidewalks, she said. C.J. Whelan, current District 4 councilmember, lost his mayoral bid against Piko but was thankful for the support he got. “We did what we could, and a great deal of thanks goes to everyone who supported me,” Whelan said.

“I thanked (Stephanie) for (what) I thought was a campaign the way it should be, especially in this day and age.” Whelan said he heard from a lot of people there was “not a lot” that distinguished him and his opponent. “Which I took as a good sign because it showed we were both dedicated to the city,” Whelan said. “I just felt that some of my background in the business world and projects I supported on council would have done it.” Meanwhile, in District 1, incumbent Kathy Turley will hold her seat. Turley is a retired sales executive from Kaiser Permanente and worked there Turley for almost 20 years. Turley has been a city councilmember for District 1 for four years. Woman found dead after shooting in Centennial Injured woman taken to hospital; schools in area are put on alert BY ELLIS ARNOLD EARNOLD@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

A dead woman was found in a residence in the 16500 block of East Hialeah Drive in Centennial after investigators searched the home following a shooting that sent another woman to a hospital. Officers received a call about a shooting at about 2 p.m. Nov. 9, in the area of the house, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office. The home sits southwest of the intersection of East Smoky Hill Road and South Buckley Road, inside Centennial city limts near the border with Aurora. The woman who was shot was transported to an area hospital, and investigators found the dead woman in the residence at about 6 p.m., the sheriff ’s office said. As of about 9 a.m. Nov. 10, the sheriff ’s office did not have an update on the injured woman’s condition. Investigators believe the shooting arose from a family dispute, and they

suspect that the woman was shot by the person whose body was found in the home. Deputies were not searching for a suspect in the death of that woman, but the sheriff ’s office will further investigate, said Julie Brooks, spokeswoman for the office. There were no other injuries, and more information about the dispute was not available from the office. Nearby Indian Ridge Elementary School was on “secure perimeter” security status as of about 2:30 p.m. Nov. 9, and students were held beyond the usual 2:45 p.m. dismissal time, according to the sheriff ’s office. Smoky Hill High School and Laredo Middle School were also on heightened security that afternoon, Brooks said. A reverse-911 call warning residents to stay in place was sent to 140 residences in about a four-block radius of the home at about 3 p.m. Nov. 9, Brooks said. Investigators stayed at the location until around 11:30 p.m. Roads in the area of East Progress Drive and East Hialeah Drive were opened back up as of about 6:30 p.m. Nov. 9 except for around the residence. The sheriff ’s office has not released the name of the injured woman. The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office is conducting an autopsy and confirmation of identity for the dead woman.

A toll adjustment announced Nov. 9 by the E-470 Board of Directors would freeze toll rates for ExpressToll drivers through 2020. That means ExpressToll users driving the 47-mile roadway can lock in the rates they are paying today, according to the board. Additionally, the toll rate on E-470 between I-70 and Peña Boulevard (Toll Plaza C) will be reduced by 25 cents to align the toll pricing with demand in the area and further ease congestion on the neighboring roadways.

ExpressToll customers on E-470 now pay $1.25 to access the roadway via the tolled on- and off-ramps and $2.70 to $2.95 per toll plaza. With the toll adjustment, License Plate Tolls will be adjusted to cover the higher cost of collections associated with that option. “It takes a large amount of resources and manpower to maintain the cameras, look up each license plate, cross reference the plate with the state DMV for verification, send out printed bills and continue to collect on those SEE TOLL, P11

Colorado would give school districts more money next year and the state would make a dent in its school funding shortfall under Gov. John Hickenlooper’s proposed 2018-19 budget released Nov. 1. If the plan is approved by state lawmakers, school districts would see an increase of about $343 per student, or an increase of about 4.5 percent. The funding proposal would reduce the gap between how much the state gives schools and what it should fund its schools according to an existing formula. That funding shortfall, commonly called the negative factor, would decrease by $70 million. The $28.7 billion budget proposal also seeks to increase the state’s savings, make a large investment in higher education to “moderate” college tuition increases and address issues with the state’s troubled pension system. Another significant education piece of the budget proposal: an $11 million request to provide charter schools authorized by the state’s Charter School Institute with extra dollars to compare with what districts will be required to share with their own charter schools. A law passed earlier this year requires school districts to share a portion of local tax measures with charter schools in their districts, but

those authorized by the state were not included in the plans. Now charter school advocates are looking to bring up their funding too. “We’re starting an equalization process with an $11 million increase in this budget,” Henry Sobanet, the state’s budget director, said during a briefing with reporters. The governor is also planning to set aside $10 million from the Marijuana Tax Cash Fund for work to reverse teacher shortages. A report requested by lawmakers will be released in December and is expected to include a plan for strategies that will help attract and retain more teachers. “We anticipate a significant focus on the challenges rural communities face in attracting, retaining and developing the qualified teachers needed to support positive student outcomes,” the budget proposal states. The proposal was sent to the Joint Budget Committee for their consideration. A final budget is usually approved in the spring. Last year, the final budget approved by lawmakers was considerably different than what the governor had proposed. The November budget proposal last year expected an increase in the gap between what schools would get and what they actually receive, but in the end, lawmakers were able to keep the shortfall from growing.

salad on the plates. Of course, you pay for the convenience. The vegetables, purchased separately, would cost half as much. But the vegetables would take far longer to wash and chop, and aren’t we all in a hurry? “Edna. Where is he going with this one?” “I wish I knew, Merle.” Which brings me to an expression. It simplifies everything, just like a salad kit. It is inclusive, which saves you the trouble of a

full, vivid explanation. Here it comes. Do you have a “go-to” restaurant? Do you have a “go-to” sweater, or a “go-to” purse? If you have been around the block with me, you already know how I feel about shortcuts when it comes to this blessed plot, this realm, this English. Ixnay glib acronyms, is what I say. Ixnay truncations. When someone says “go-to,”

sure, it saves words, but the art of conversation is reduced to a sleeve of Honey Mustard. I can’t track down the expression’s etymology anywhere. So I am going to blame it on New York City. That’s where a lot of these expressions get their start. The first time I heard “in a New York minute,” I thought it was clever. Now? Not so much. SEE SMITH, P13

morning and collecting my thoughts for this column I remembered a story I had once been told. There was a young boy who would walk with his fishing pole, tackle box, and a large bucket. When asked why he was bringing such a large bucket, the young boy would optimistically and enthusiastically said that one day he had caught so many fish, but sadly he didn’t have a big enough bucket to carry the fish home. And he promised himself that he would never let that happen again. Most days he came home with an empty pail or one or two fish, and a little downhearted, but day after day, he could be found walk-

lately have turned from numbers to feelings. In the last 30 years of preparing people for retirement, the trend has shifted from “Will I have enough money?” to “Will I have enough time?” This sounds strange at first, since the money question is normal, but don’t you have more time than ever in retirement? And time for what? You fill in the blank. Enough time to find purpose again. Enough time to make an impact, to pass on knowledge, a

legacy, to share ideas. Enough time to get things in order to pass along, to spend meaningful time with family and friends or just to do the things you always dreamed of. No matter what resources you need in retirement — time, money, knowledge, health or activities, it will work out best if you plan for it. That’s right, retirement planning is not just about money. Yes, it is important to have a nest egg and a source of income, but more and more, people

are seeking purpose. Will they be able to create, improve, teach, help or care for someone? These ideas may take a different view of resources and what they are meant to provide. Money, after all, is just a tool to get you the things you want and need. If you adjust your wants and needs to match your resources, you can focus on the fun things. ing enthusiastically with the same bucket, fishing pole and tackle box and when asked he would energetically respond with, “This will be the day that I catch enough fish to fill this big bucket.” You see, he had tasted success before and wanted to experience it again. He planned and prepared for success, even though he had days where he fell short of his goal, not even catching one fish at all. Was it a trophy we won in our youth? Maybe a job promotion? A diploma? Did we complete a project that we were recognized for? Was it something we did in our everyday role that we found extremely rewarding? Somewhere along the way, we caught so many fish we couldn’t fill our bucket. We tasted success and we knew what we did to achieve that success. It probably included planning, preparing and expecting to win. So today, right now, right in this very moment, each and every one of us has the ability to succeed as we pursue our worthy goals. And remember that Earl Nightingale defines success this way, “Success is the progressive realization of a wordthy goal or ideal.” Back to our fishing story. On one side of the lake we have the young optimistic boy and his large bucket. On the other side of the lake we have a man catching fish and only keeping the small fish, throwing all of the larger fish back into the lake. When a confused fellow fishing enthusiast questioned the man throwing back

needs have changed and they like to have something of interest to replace that need with. Maybe they are down to one or two cars — instead of three or four. Maybe they find they don’t use all the things they have stored for 30 years and those can be used to provide for someone else. Maybe they have books or memoirs that can help educate others. There are many ways retirees can be challenging themselves. And this often changes the focus to more pleasant alternatives than worrying about the next stock market event. The baby boomers will be the most educated generation to retire. This is also a group of people who grew up with investing. Therefore, the idea of their money working for them when they are not, is not foreign. the larger fish, the fisherman reached into his backpack and displayed a very small frying pan. He shared that he couldn’t keep the larger fish because he was only prepared to catch and cook the smaller fish. I am confident that you have connected the dots here. As we plan and prepare for future success, we need to keep our success bucket available. We need to plan, prepare, and expect to win. We need to know that there will be some days where we get shut out, meet with setbacks, and we need to remind ourselves that failure is an event, and it doesn’t define who we are as a person. We need to remind ourselves that if we expect little wins, that is what we will achieve. Now little wins are OK, they do add up over time. However, if we are planning for future success, a bigger job, a larger home, a significant role in our community or church, a substantial change in our earnings or income, whatever that big success looks like in our future, let’s make sure we are carrying our success bucket with us as we travel to fish in all of the ponds, lakes and oceans of our life. How about you? Can you build upon your successes of yesterday? Are you properly positioned to succeed today? Are you planning, preparing, and expecting to win tomorrow? I would really love to hear all of our community success stories at gotonorton@gmail. com and when our success bucket is ready to be filled, it really will be a better than good week. And neither is “not so much.” Don’t get me wrong. If I were on an airplane and we were headed into a mountain, I would truncate all over the place. Have you ever had a disagreement with someone that ended when he said or she said, “Whatever”? Don’t try that around me. It’s very dismissive. Americans keep it simple. The English, on the other hand, value words. I admit that I can’t always understand what they are saying, but it sure sounds eloquent. Whenever I watch a film that features English actors, I turn on the closed caption feature. It’s a must. “Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government,” comes from Monty Python, and until I read the caption it sounded like something being said backwards.

It’s called “phonetic reversal.” David Lynch experimented with it in “Twin Peaks.” You can also find it in “Amadeus.” Mozart says a number of phonetically reversed phrases, and many of them are vulgar. There’s a woman who works at my grocery store who says, “Have a good one, hon,” to every man, woman, and child she sees. Doesn’t she know? Doesn’t she know that there are a million and one things she could say? “Only in the agony of parting do we look into the depths of love.” (George Eliot) “The pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again.” (Charles Dickens) “What’s so good about good-bye?” (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles) If she started to say things like that, I would shop there twice a day. “Have a good one, Honey Mustard.” Even that is an improvement. Study: Over-the-counter pain pills as effective as opioids in ER patients Adults were given ibuprofen and acetaminophen together BY LINDSEY TANNER ASSOCIATED PRESS

Emergency rooms are where many patients are first introduced to powerful opioid painkillers, but what if doctors offered over-the-counter pills instead? A new study tested that approach on patients with broken bones and sprains and found pain relievers sold as Tylenol and Motrin worked as well as opioids at reducing severe pain. The results challenge common ER practice for treating short-term,

severe pain and could prompt changes that would help prevent new patients from becoming addicted. The study has limitations: It only looked at short-term pain relief in the emergency room and researchers didn’t evaluate how patients managed their pain after leaving the hospital. But given the scope of the U.S. opioid epidemic — more than 2 million Americans are addicted to opioid painkillers or heroin — experts say any dent in the problem could be meaningful. Results were published Nov. 7 in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Long-term opioid use often begins with a prescription painkiller for short-term pain, and use of these drugs in the ER has risen in recent years. Previous studies have shown opioids

were prescribed in nearly one-third of ER visits and about 1 out of 5 ER patients are sent home with opioid prescriptions. “Preventing new patients from becoming addicted to opioids may have a greater effect on the opioid epidemic than providing sustained treatment to patients already addicted,” Dr. Demetrios Kyriacou, an emergency medicine specialist at Northwestern University, wrote in an accompanying editorial. The study involved 411 adults treated in two emergency rooms at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. Their injuries included leg and arm fractures or sprains. All were given acetaminophen, the main ingredient in Tylenol, plus either ibuprofen, the main ingredient in Motrin, or one of three opioids: oxycodone, hydrocodone or codeine.

They were given standard doses and were not told which drug combo they received. Patients rated their pain levels before taking the medicine and two hours later. On average, pain scores dropped from almost 9 on a 10-point scale to about 5, with negligible differences between the groups. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen affect different pain receptors in the body so using the two drugs together may be especially potent, said Dr. Andrew Chang, an emergency medicine professor at Albany Medical College in upstate New York, who led the study. He noted that a pill combining ibuprofen and acetaminophen is available in other countries; his findings echo research from Canada and Australia testing that pill against opioids for pain relief.

her tenure — among them, the opening of IKEA, the event honoring Missy Franklin and opening Centennial Center Park, Centennial’s first city-owned park, in 2012, which has since garnered local and national praise. “There are so many moments I remember — watching the reaction of people when she gives a speech or talk,” Jim Noon said. “People coming up to her on the street and telling her what a great job she is doing. “I especially like the reaction of students when she talks to schools ... these are the kinds of things that make me proud.”

time together on council and my questions about dealing with other elected officials,” Whelan said, “I’ve often sought Cathy’s advice and counsel, and she has always been there to give it honestly, thoughtfully and intelligently.” Candace Moon, another councilmember, has enjoyed working with Noon. “She has always put the city first,” Moon said. “Her ability to get to the heart of any matter is one of her strongest traits.” Lifelong ‘joiner’ Noon, who was involved in high school clubs as a teenager, has gone on to serve on the Metro Mayors Caucus as chair, among several other local and regional organizations. “I’m an organizer and joiner by nature,” Noon said. “And it tends to be, whatever I get involved with, there’s gotta be a better way to run it.” Originally from Maryland, Noon moved to Colorado in 1976 with her husband, Jim. She went to the University of Maryland before coming to the University of Colorado Denver — and studying theater education. She and her husband have owned a container and shipping supply business — coincidentally called Centennial Container, located in Denver — since 1985. The Noons lived in Aurora for 23 years before moving in 1999 to the Chapparal neighborhood in what would later become Centennial. Since then, Noon has learned one of the biggest challenges about being mayor is trying to satisfy everyone. “It’s always a challenge to keep the focus on the city and keep everyone rowing in the same direction,” said Noon, the only at-large elected official in the city. It requires taking “the global view ...

Mayor Cathy Noon speaks to Olympic swimming goldmedalist Missy Franklin at a celebration of Colorado’s Olympic athletes in August 2012 at Centennial Center Park. Franklin, who grew up in Centennial, met fans and signed autographs at the event. PHOTO COURTESY OF THE CITY OF CENTENNIAL making decisions where some people are happy and some are not.” One of her best accomplishments, she said, was to make sure the city stays on a stable financial path after it was “just trying to survive” when it first formed. “The first few councils laid a really good foundation, and (after the recession) ... we set up projects and procedures to make sure our (finances) are well planned-out,” Noon said. The East Arapahoe Road widening in the eastern wing of the city is among her proudest projects. “It was the largest project we’ve been the lead on as a city,” said Noon, adding it had been in discussion since the 1990s. The success was in “planning for and saving for it ... we look at looking ahead.” “It feels so good to not have people fear for their lives,” said Noon, noting the road’s use as a thoroughfare and its spot in front of Grandview High School. Her husband had quite a few high points to list in

A lasting legacy John Brackney — a former Arapahoe County commissioner and one of the five founders of Centennial who helped organize citizens toward incorporation — said Noon is one of the most important figures in Centennial’s history. “She’s done herself and our community proud,” said Brackney, who praised her ability to get the charter commission to nearly unanimously support the home-rule charter. Whelan said there are very few details that get by Noon. “Cathy’s level of knowledge about our city is incredible,” Whelan said. “From the businesses that make up our city, to the names of HOA leaders, to deeply involved figures within our budget.” Noon’s husband said Noon’s being mayor hasn’t been a huge shift in their lives. “We have both been so involved in other boards and groups that it just seems like another,” said Jim Noon, who added that adjusting to political life was seamless for his wife. “This one has been more fun, at least for me.” Noon said it’s been a pleasure being mayor and sees a bright horizon for her city — she’d like to thank citizens for electing her not once, but twice. “I just want to say thank you for the opportunity,” Noon said. “It’s been a pleasure — it’s been so rewarding.”

Theatrical options for the holiday season The Arvada Center is celebrating the holiday season with a classic family story, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” BY CLARKE READER CREADER@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

T

he holidays mean something different to everyone, but if there’s one thing that most can agree on, it is that they should be spent with the people who mean the most to us. And as far as activities go for the holidays, few are better than sharing the community and thrill of live theater. “The holidays are the time of year when people are busiest, so it’s really special that they make time to be together at the theater,” said Josh Hartwell, a playwright

and actor who has written two holiday shows this season — one at Lakewood’s The Edge Theater and Golden’s Miners Alley Playhouse. “It makes you feel closer to the people you care about when you make time to do things with them.” This time of year, theater-goers have a variety of options to select from — more traditional to dark comedies and shows that highlight holiday themes, like “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” which is playing at the Arvada Center. “’Joseph’ is a great family-oriented show, with some wonderful

messages,” said Stephen Day, who plays Jacob and Potiphar in the show. “There’s powerful moments of redemption, and a great exploration of family dynamics.” The musical brings together all kinds of genres, from pop and country to rock. Which means there’s something for everyone to enjoy in the show, said Sarah Rex, the narrator in “Joseph.” Another show that embraces the theme of the season is “Seussical,” which is plays at Littleton’s Town Hall Arts Center. Seuss’ most popular stories, including “Horton Hears a Who,” “The Cat in the Hat,” “The One-Feathered Tail of Miss Gertrude McFuzz” and “Horton Hatches an Egg.” “Christmas and the end-of-year holiday celebrations are all about family, and there is a long-time tradition of families sharing certain productions together, passing the experience on to new generations to share,” said Bob Wells, director of the show. “’A Christmas Carol’ and ‘The Nutcracker’ are the champions, and I hope ‘Seussical,’ with its story, music, dance, sets and costumes, will become part of the merry tradition.” Those looking for more off kilter fare can check out “The SantaLand Diaries” at The Jones at the Denver Center for Performing, based on David Sedaris’ experiences from his stint as a Macy’s elf in New York City, and the world premiere of “Resolutions,” written by Hartwell and directed by Missy Moore at The Edge. “The idea was to create a holiday show that wasn’t really about the holidays,” Hartwell said. “It’s kind

of a Quentin Tarantino holiday show. It’s something unlike everything else out there.” The show is about three middleaged couples who meet up after the holidays at a cabin in Vail. Each year their social event includes exchanging white elephant gifts, making their resolutions for the upcoming year and, of course, some drinking. But as relationships change, so does the event. “It’s a black comedy, but it has

some grimness, too,” Hartwell added. For the traditionalists, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts’ production of “A Christmas Carol” is a perennial favorite, and hard to top. But for a more personal approach, Hartwell adapted Charles Dickens’ classic for Miners Alley in Golden. His version follows six local actors who challenge each other to bring Dickens’ classic to life as

swiftly and simply as possible. This allows for a blending of the classic elements of the fable to mix with modern sensibilities. “The journey is so interesting, and I think Scrooge is more complex than people realize,” said Jim Hunt, who plays the miser in the production. “People who come to our show are going to see something fresh and new. In the end, it’s about family and coziness, and that fits with the holiday season.”

A musical Thanksgiving tradition On Thanksgiving Day 1976, The Band — the musical group responsible for classics like “The Weight” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” — played its final concert at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom, with visits from rock royalty like Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell and more. The ensuing film, directed by Martin Scorsese, and live album have gone down as one of the best live recordings in rock history. In 2005, Polytoxic, a jam band based in Denver, came up with the idea of reenacting the movie on stage to highlight the quality of area musicians. That first concert on May 25 included 16 guest musicians and a four-piece horn section, and sold out in minutes. So the group decided to hold a repeat performance the night before Thanksgiving — and they’ve been doing it ever since.

Now in its 13th year, The Last Waltz Revisited will be on Friday, Nov. 17, at the Boulder Theater, 2032 14th St., and on Nov. 22 (the night before Thanksgiving) at the Fillmore Auditorium, 1510 N. Clarkson St. The show will feature more than 50 musicians and a full horn section, all from the Denver music scene. A portion of the proceeds go to support the Denver Rescue Mission, and more information and tickets can be found at www.lastwaltz revisited.com.

Book sale kicks off season with treasured titles Event at library in Littleton lasts five days; cash or check BY SONYA ELLINGBOE SELLINGBOE@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Throughout the year, Sue McNamee and her Friends of the Littleton Library/Museum Book Sale Committee save some special books that come in as donations — save them for the annual FOL/M Holiday Book Sale, which starts Nov. 18 and runs through Dec. 23 at Bemis Public Library, 6014 S. Datura St., Littleton. She says that in addition to these special books, “there will be thousands of books covering a wide array of topics.” The selection of books on the tables on the first floor at Bemis are updated daily — so shop early and often! Some bibliophiles, as well as ordinary shoppers, seek leather-bound editions of classics: “Huckleberry Finn”

The Friends of the Littleton Library/Museum will have thousands of interesting titles available at their annual holiday sale, starting Nov. 18 at Bemis Library. COURTESY PHOTO by Mark Twain, for example. Also books by Charles Dickens, a copy of “Wuthering Heights” and one of “Madame Bovary,” are available, among others. Some visitors seek out autographed-by-the-author copies, or first editions — also

to be found at Bemis. Generally available: multiple categories including: poetry, Christmas and other holiday books, cookbooks, knitting and other craft books (big selection), interior decorating, photography, art, travel, science and

animals, sports, biography and autobiography, history from all periods, children’s and young adult titles, Colorado books and religious and inspirational titles and more … Important: Note that purchases must be by cash or

check — no credit or debit cards. Volunteers will be available to help with sales much of the time. Or purchases can be made through the circulation desk. For information, see the Friends of the Library and Museum Facebook page or the website: friendsofthelibraryandmuseum.org or call Bemis Library: 303-7953961. The FOL/M Used Book Sale is maintained all through the year, with hundreds of titles available at any one time for browsers. Proceeds are used by the library and museum to fund speakers and other programs for adults, teens and children, as well as needed materials and equipment — and an occasional cow! Over the years, that program support has amounted to many thousands of dollars. Funds are also raised by booth fees at the annual Friends’ Craft Fair on the first Saturday in October, members’ dues, donations and occasional other events, such as the recent “A Holiday’s Eve at the Museum.”

Highlands Ranch gets first area Smoothie King STAFF REPORT

The first Smoothie King franchise in the Denver area opened in early November in Highlands Ranch. The nation’s originator in offering “Smoothies with a Purpose” will open a second location in December in Castle Rock, and plans to add four additional stores in the next five years. “The Denver Metro area has been an appealing location for Smoothie King to develop for a number of years due to the active and healthy lifestyles that many people embrace here,” Kerry Dray, Denver operator for Smoothie King, said in a news release. Dray is an avid fitness enthusiast and certified yoga instructor. She has partnered with her aunt, Susan Dray, to open the Denver-metro franchises. Together, the two plan to help provide Denverites with meal replacement and snack solutions that are purposeful, no matter

what goal someone is trying to achieve, whether it be to lose weight, gain muscle, stay well or simply take a break. Located in the Highlands Ranch Town Center, Smoothie King is at 1100 Sgt. Jon Stiles Drive, Suite 101. The Castle Rock store is at 1341 New Beale St., Suite 130. Both locations are accepting applications for employment. The stores offer sports beverages, energy bars, vitamin supplements and more. As part of its health-focus, Smoothie King also recently announced its Cleaner Blending initiative. At the centerpiece of the new initiative, Smoothie King will remove added sugar from more than 50 smoothies and will remove artificial flavors, artificial colors, artificial preservatives, and added hormones from all smoothie ingredients and introduce non-GMO fruits and veggies. Find more information at www. smoothieking.com.

Bruins take second at state volleyball tourney

Roy Halladay left good memories through years in baseball

alston Valley baseball coach Brad Madden grew up playing baseball with Roy Halladay. It didn’t take Madden long to realize that Halladay, who OVERTIME was his teammate at Arvada West, was a special player. Halladay, 40, was killed Nov. 7 when the OICON A5 sport aircraft he was piloting crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. He was a 1995 graduate of Arvada Jim Benton West and was a 17thround draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays. He was an eight-time all-star with Toronto and Philadelphia and a Cy Young Award winner in both the American and National Leagues. “From the time I met Roy as a 9-year-old, he was a dominant pitcher, player and a fierce competitor,” Madden said. Halladay, who is one of only two pitchers to throw a post-season nohitter, had a 203-105 major league pitching record with a 3.38 earned run average. He was inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 2015 and likely will be a future inductee into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. “Baseball players in Colorado now could learn from him,” said Adams State baseball coach Jim Capra, who

Cherry Creek advanced to finals despite being only the No. 12 seed BY BY TOM MUNDS TMUNDS@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Cherry Creek finished second at the Nov. 10-11 Class 5A State Volleyball Championships at the Denver Coliseum. “I am so proud of our girls,” Bruins coach Sally Moos said after the Nov. 11 finals against Castle View. “Our play together as a team took us to the fifth set in the championship match. But in the fifth set, they outhit us a bit when we didn’t get our blocks up so they got the fifth-set win.” The Bruins completed the regular season 19-2 before beginning the path leading to the second-

place finish at state. It began at regionals. Class 5A teams were divided into a dozen thee-team pools for round-robin play with the regional champ advancing to the state tournament. Cherry Creek defeated Highlands Ranch and Columbine in regionals to earn the spot in the 12-team state Class 5A tournament, where they were seeded 12th. At state, the 12 Class 5A teams were divided into four pools for round-robin play with the pool champion advancing to the state semifinals. In Nov. 10 pool play, Cherry Creek beat No. 1 seed Mountain Vista 3-2 in their first pool play game. The team statistical leaders in that match included Katie Sherman, who led the Bruins with 16 kills, and Payton Fehringer, with nine kills. Teammate Ashley Hand served three aces and Molly Chapman, defensive specialist,

made 32 digs. Cherry Creek then earned a berth in the semifinals by winning the pool championship with a 3-0 win over eighth-seeded Rocky Mountain. In the semifinals, Cherry Creek posted a 3-0 win over Chaparral, the fourth seed, to advance to the finals. The Bruins played No. 3-seeded Castle View in the finals. The Sabercats won the first two sets but Cherry Creek came back to win the next two sets to force a deciding set. The Sabercats won the fifth set, 15-13. The Bruins won their first pool play match Nov. 10 then spent all day at the Coliseum on Nov. 11 to complete pool play, play in the semifinals and then the finals. “It was a long day for us as we got to the Coliseum about 8 a.m. today (Nov. 11),” Moos said. “The SEE VOLLEYBALL, P23

Valor, Cherry Creek roll to first-round football wins STAFF REPORT

Valor Christian and Cherry Creek, two schools that have had success over the years in the state football playoffs, notched Class 5A first-round wins on Nov. 10. Top-seeded and defending state champion Valor, which is seeking its eighth state crown in the past nine seasons in three classifications, toppled Chaparral, 35-7. The Eagles (11-0) will face Grandview (9-2) in a 7 p.m. quarterfinal contest on Nov. 17 at

Valor Christian. Valor has won the past three games played against the Wolves and holds a 4-2 advantage in the series. Cherry Creek, a nine-time state champion and a semifinalist last season, downed Ralston Valley, 34-21. The Bruins (9-2) will play unbeaten Eaglecrest (11-0) in a 7 p.m. game quarterfinal game Nov. 17 at Legacy Stadium in Aurora. Creek has won nine of 12 games played against Eaglecrest, including the last three. Valor was only ahead of Chaparral 14-7 at halftime but

waiting was hard on the girls but we found things to do. We went outside quite a bit and we took quite a few walks but we always tried to stay focused on playing our best volleyball in the tournament.” Senior Ashley Hand said Cherry Creek came into the tournament wanting to prove they were better than the 12th seed. “We had great season, with only two regular-season losses so we felt we were better than being ranked 12th coming into the tournament,” she

outscored the Wolverines 21-0 in the second half to secure the victory. Quarterback Blake Stenstrom passed for 56 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles’ victory. Luke McCaffrey, the second half of Valor’s dual quarterback system, passed for 67 yards and rushed for a touchdown. Ryan Thibault had three receptions for 66 yards and a TD, in addition to making six solo tackles. Cherry Creek jumped to a 17-0 lead over Ralston Valley but had to stave of the Mus-

said. “State was a lot of fun and we played very well. It says it all that we were ranked 12th and finished second in the state.” Hand is the team’s setter. In the team’s games this season she made 631 assists. She also made 197 digs, 31 blocks and 72 kills. Looking ahead, Moos said she has nine seniors on this year’s roster but she said there is a strong group of sophomores and junior plus some younger players who will be challenging for positions on the team next season. “Our teams usually don’t have one strong area,” she said. “Our team focus is playing together and to try not to let a ball hit the ground.”

tangs with 10 points in the final six minutes to advance. Quarterback Alex Padilla completed 16-of-23 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns, including a scoring strike to Dimitri Stanley with two minutes to play to seal the win. Stanley caught six passes for 82 yards and two scores. In another 5A game, Columbine rolled to a 45-14 openinground win 5A win over Highlands Ranch. Columbine led 31-0 at halftime and rushed for 253 yards and five TDs to end the

season for the Falcons. Highlands Ranch lost its final four games to finish with a 6-5 overall record. Dominic Bettini rushed for both Falcons touchdowns. In the first round of the 4A playoffs, Loveland ousted Ponderosa, 31-6, as the Mustangs lost for the second straight time after starting the season with a 9-0 record. Mustangs quarterback Sterling Ostdahl threw for the lone touchdown, and his brother Quinton led the Pondo defense with 15 tackles.

Cherry Creek players pose with the trophy they won when they finished second at the Class 5A state volleyball championships. The Bruins defeated three higher-seeded teams to get to the finals, where they lost the deciding fifth set to Castle View. TOM MUNDS
