Dry means high for hay prices

Animal owners face tough choices amid rising costs

By Deborah Grigsby

dgrigsby@ourcoloradonews.com

Extreme drought conditions across the state have many Elbert County ranchers scurrying for ways to adequately feed their animals over the long winter months. Unusually dry weather has crippled hay production resulting in a statewide shortage, and rising fuel costs are adding to already historic high prices. According to reports from the Colorado Department of Agriculture, hay prices have more than doubled over the past 24 months. “Two years ago, we were paying about $125 per ton,” said Pat Miller, one of the founding directors of the Ruby Ranch Horse Rescue in Ramah. “For what we bought last week, we paid nearly $350 per ton.” Miller said she had to buy the hay from Wyoming, as local hay is becoming more difficult to find. Ranchers continue to search for alternative feed sources, cheaper hay and other ways to reduce costs. However, according to the CDA, fuel prices are rising and freight costs to ship hay are also predicted to increase. Poor pasture and rangeland conditions have also limited the potential for grazing. So as cold weather approaches, many livestock owners who can’t sustain their animals will be forced to make tough decisions to stretch strained food supplies. “In cases of extreme drought like we have now, some ranchers will cull the herd of weaker animals and others may take them to auction,” said Ben Berlinger, rangeland management specialist with the National Resources Conservation Service in La Junta. “There’s always a top end of the herd,

Barn supervisor Adam Owens stacks bales of hay at the Big R Feed Store in Elizabeth. Drought conditions across the state have contributed to a shortage of hay. Many ranchers are now scrambling to store enough to sustain their animals through spring. Those who can’t face some very tough decisions. Photos by Deborah Grigsby and always a bottom end.” For others, the decision often comes on the heels of other tough decisions. “I’m probably going to lose everything this year,” said Jim, a rancher from Calhan, who asked to be identified by only his first name. “It’s only a matter of time. My wife has medical problems and I’m just at a point where I can’t even afford myself, much less all these animals. There’s just no way I can feed us all over the winter. I’m gonna have to get rid of them.” Miller said she’s extremely familiar with cases like Jim’s. The Ruby Ranch is nonprofit organization that provides shelter, care and rehabilitation for abused, neglected, abandoned and unwanted horses, including those that can no longer be cared for by their owners and those at risk of going to slaughter. Republican candidates detail their views Rowland, Ross urge transparency as they run for county commissioner By Deborah Grigsby

dgrigsby@ourcoloradonews.com A week after Robert Rowland and Larry Ross declined to participate in an open “Meet the Candidates” forum, the two Republican prospects for Elbert County commissioner agreed to meet with Colorado Community Media and discuss some of the pressing issues facing the county this year.

Transparency of local government, a debt-riddled budget and the potential for oil and gas development topped the list for both candidates. Seeking the District 1 seat, Rowland, founder of the Elbert County Tea Party, touts more than 28 years’ experience in several managerial positions at the Rocky Mountain News and Denver Newspaper Agency, including production, transportation and human resources.

Rowland plans to bring practical “business sense” back to county government. The self-described community activist said the word “transparency” can’t be used enough when it comes to local Rowland politics. “Elbert County has a reputation of having a ‘good ol’ boy’ network with traditional closeddoor meetings, and not respecting sunshine laws, and we’ve butted heads over that several times,” Ross Rowland said. Rowland says he’s already raised the transparency flag more than once, by digging into the county’s business regarding how it secured a 40-year, $7 million loan. “When the county took out that loan,

they did it with what we call a Certificate of Participation” he said. “And while that was done legally, it was nothing more than a loophole to get around TABOR.” Fourth-generation rancher Larry Ross is a Cherry Creek High School graduate and is seeking the District 3 seat. He attended Colorado State University and spent more than 30 years in the real estate and facilities management industry. Also an advocate for transparency, Ross said one of the first things he’ll do as commissioner is to make himself available to the public. “It’s literally taking the door off my office, making my schedule public,” he said. “I’ve made a simple promise that I’ll listen and have regular meetings on Saturdays and I’ll sit down with a notepad and identify priorities and issues the citizens find important.” As for budget issues, Rowland says he will continue his push for better fiscal acCandidates continues on Page 6

Shops for immigrants aren’t strictly business Indira Torres stands behind the counter, mahogany hair neatly pulled back, ready for the steady flow of requests. “How are you?” she asks in Spanish as a man in paint-spattered pants, a camouflage Air Force hat tipped back on his head, walks through the door. “Muy bien, gracias a Dios,” he says. Very well, thanks be to God. He hands his check to Torres to cash. A young mother pushes a stroller inside and gives Torres $40 to pay toward her light bill. Torres taps in the woman’s information on the computer and applies it electronically. An older man pays for a calling card to Mexico. A young woman adds $3 on a rechargeable phone account. A daughter sends her retired parents, in their 70s and in Mexico, several hundred dollars for living expenses. A son wires his mother — and a sister — also in Mexico, enough money “so that they won’t lack for anything.” This small storefront, in a Latino market that sells the fond tastes of once-upon-a-time lives, has become a one-stop shop that helps preserve the connection between the old country and the new one. It also provides the financial services essential to begin planting stable roots here. It’s like a warm, comfortable home, says Mayra Saldana, a petite 28-year-old Littleton resident who with her parents

owns the Littleton store and another in Denver that adjoins a restaurant. “We provide the services where we can send money to their families and, as well, commonly used ingredients for Hispanic dinners.” Food for the soul in every way. The businesses, throughout the Denver metro area, nearly shout their services in bold-colored lettering in Spanish to passersby — money transfers, checkcashing, calling cards, money orders. Like Saldana’s two places, many share space with restaurants, small neighborhood markets or convenience stores that sell everything from piñatas and cowboy boots to pico de gallo and baptismal candles. One, on Federal Boulevard in Denver, advertises its services in a jewelry store. The stores are a cultural reference point for many Latino immigrants, says Laszlo Kalloi, community affairs consul for the Mexican Consulate in Denver. He notes that consulate officials encourage the use of traditional bank services, rath-

er than the private businesses, because more financial options are offered. But the neighborhood locations and absence of a language barrier make them feel more comfortable, he says. “They know the system and it’s easier.” Walking through the doors is like stepping into another country, one with mariachi or cumbia music soft in the background, freshly baked pan dulce on trays and Spanish CDs and DVDs on the racks. The sweet-spicy hot tamarind candy and crispy homemade chicharrones take me back to my growing-up years in Mexico and the other Latin American countries we lived in when my parents worked for then-United Fruit Co., which produced Chiquita bananas. The nostalgic warmth of memories tease my heart for the culture I love deeply, and I can only imagine how it must remind many how far they are from home. And, yet, maybe not so far, at least for a few moments, with the assistance of people like Indira Torres, 27, who drives six days a week from her house near I-70 and I-25 to Las Huertas Mexican market. She doesn’t mind the commute to Littleton. “I am happy here because I know these people. I feel like this is my second home.” With a kind smile, she deftly works the computer like a magician. She knows how to make the transfer happen, which calling card to suggest

and how to exchange cash for money orders to pay the rent. She gets the job — all the jobs — done. For construction workers. Restaurant waiters and busboys. Mostly men, but some women, too. Mostly from Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. But also some from India, Saudi Arabia and Africa. They all come, many weekly, to conduct their financial transactions with confianza, Torres says. Trust. That is why Veronica Vargas, 37, on a recent afternoon, walked in after her restaurant shift to send money to her family in Mexico. Trust — and the language — make it “easier.” She is one of 10 siblings and also has many nephews and nieces. She tries to help her parents out the most, but “I help them all,” she says. “Not always, because sometimes, I can’t. But a little bit.” These are the stories Torres hears every day as she facilitates the connection from the home in the new country to the home in the old country. Money sent to buy medicine, to help build a house, to make life a little better. Stories about the bond that transcends the miles — love.

4TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT CANDIDATES

Shaffer prizes bipartisanship Gardner calls for tax reform By Jane Reuter

jreuter@ourcoloradonews.com Democrat Brandon Shaffer, seeking the 4th Congressional District seat, prides himself on a bipartisan approach he says has benefited all Coloradans. The current state Senate president now wants to take that attitude to Washington. Born in Denver, Shaffer graduated from Stanford University with a political science degree, and then served in the Navy. He graduated from law school at the Univer- Shaffer sity of Colorado in 2001. Shaffer first was elected state senator in November 2004, and reelected in 2008. He was unanimously elected Senate president by his peers in 2009. Shaffer lives in Longmont with his wife and two children. Colorado Community Media asked the following questions of the candidates in the 4th Congressional District. Below are Shaffer’s answers.

What makes you the best candidate to run for this office? In the Navy, I learned to prioritize the completion of the mission and learned how to get the job done. What I see in Congress can only be described as mission failure. Congressman Gardner has chosen to put special interest and politicking above getting the job done. As president of the Colorado Senate, I worked with Republican and Democratic governors to pass eight balanced budgets responsibly while always protecting education. I’m tired of watching Congress fail to pass a budget or Farm Bill. I’m asking for your vote, because I’m ready to work for you. If elected, what would you do to promote job growth? To promote job growth I believe government must be a good partner to business, which means investing in infrastructure and education/job training programs to have the best workforce in the world. We must open foreign markets to sell American products and close tax loopShaffer continues on Page 8

jreuter@ourcoloradonews.com Cory Gardner, the Republican incumbent in the 4th Congressional District, describes himself as a strong voice for rural families and small businesses. He knows both well. Gardner grew up working for his family’s farm implement dealership in Yuma, the community he still calls home. Gardner graduated Gardner from Colorado State University with a bachelor’s degree in political science, and then earned a law degree at the University of Colorado. Prior to joining the Colorado House of Representatives in 2005, Gardner served as general counsel and legislative director for U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard. In 2010, he defeated incumbent Betsy Markey for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Gardner, his wife Jaime, and their two children live in a historic house that once

belonged to his great-grandparents. Colorado Community Media asked the following questions of the candidates in the 4th Congressional District. Below are Gardner’s answers. What makes you the best candidate for this office? I represent the values of the district, and have a three-part plan will that will get this country back to work and turn our economy around. First, we need comprehensive tax reform that is based on lower, flatter rates. We also need regulatory certainty in this country. That is why I co-sponsored legislation that says any new major regulation is contingent on congressional approval. Last but not least, we need to reduce the debt and deficit by passing a balanced budget amendment and supporting responsible entitlement reform. If elected, what would you do to promote job growth? Get government out of the way and let America work. We do this by providing regulatory and tax certainty for busiGardner continues on Page 8

Cherokee Ranch & Castle Hosts Gothic Author As the days grow shorter, leaves turn crimson and gold, and a chilling wind begins to blow, thoughts more easily turn to the darker side of life. Stories of morbid possibilities and gruesome happenings become more common place at this time of year. Such was the case at the Cherokee Ranch and Castle last week as the organization hosted another performance in its Meet the Author series. Edgar Allan Poe – Dark Whispers of Genius was vividly portrayed by actor David Skipper in period costume. Armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of the gothic author and an appropriately baleful voice, the actor switched between reciting some of Poe’s lesser-known works and thoughtful musings that the author may have had. He began with a reading of the poem Ulalume – one of three poems written as his beloved wife, Virginia, slowly succumbed to consumption, now known as tuberculosis. “The skies they were ashen and sober; The leaves they were crisped and sere— The leaves they were withering and sere; It was night in the lonesome October Of my most immemorial year: It was hard by the dim lake of Auber, In the misty mid region of Weir— It was down by the dank tarn of Auber, In the ghoul-haunted woodland of Weir… Anecdotes about his troubled life “…the dead rest only as long as we remember…”, literary influences that formed him as a writer, poet and critic “…in many literary circles I am known as the Tomahawk Man because of my rather scathing reviews of supposed fellow authors work such as that lick-spickled Longfellow who couldn’t put a sentence together if he had a bag of words,” and the creative writing process “My writing comes from my mind and my spirit, my poetry comes from my heart...” were fodder for the performance. These themes were explored in between readings of both poetry and prose after which questions for the author were taken while still in character. “No sir, I never took drugs. I do, however, suffer from— inebriation from time to time—but have sworn off and am now a temperate man.” After the in-character performance, Skipper took further questions from the audience regarding insights into Poe’s life as well as his death, which is still shrouded in mystery. The actor’s knowledge of Poe and insights into his psyche were as much intriguing as they were enlightening. The fact that the Castle’s last owner, Tweet Kimball was a direct descendant of Poe’s surrogate family (the Allan family) further added to the macabre atmosphere. As is tradition, tours of the citadel were given by foundation docents prior to the performance. Tours are not only educational, but thoroughly enjoyable as history was woven with anecdotes of the former owners giving glimpses into their personal lives. The furnishings, much of which dates back to the 16th & 17th centuries, and the art collection are remarkable especially when paired with the descriptive narrative of the guides. The tours alone are worth the price of admission. Also included was an incredible buffet dinner enjoyed before the performance with a luscious desert and coffee service after capping off the evening’s experience. The Authors Series continues with Julie Pech - The Chocolate Therapist and A Holiday Dinner with Charles Dickens in December. The Cherokee Ranch & Castle Foundation operates the facility hosting a variety of other activities including guided tours, afternoon teas, educational opportunities and special events & weddings. The Foundation also oversees a heard of prize winning Santa Gertrudis on

Taste, expo grow local businesses By Chris Michlewicz

cmichlewicz@ourcoloradonews.com Nearly 100 Parker business owners have discovered one of the best ways to quickly expand their customer base. The Wildlife Experience will funnel an estimated 2,000 people through its halls Oct. 19-20 for the 2012 Taste and Biz EXPO, an annual event by the Parker Chamber of Commerce. Dozens of interactive booths will enable business owners to network with one another and showcase their products and services to a new audience. Helen Ogbourne, who opened Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt near SuperTarget in June, is in the process of moving from Iowa as she tries to launch her shop. She is among the 20 Parker restaurateurs this year who view the Taste as an opportunity to grow. “We want to get our yogurt out there and have

people taste it and know what we have to offer so they can compare it to the other places,” Ogbourne said. More than 70 other businesses are also hoping to make a good showing. Unlike the Taste, which is scheduled for Oct. 20 only, the Biz EXPO stretches over two days. And although the location is technically outside Parker’s limits, organizers see that as a positive. “We want people outside of town to experience what Parker has to offer,” said chamber president Dan Rodriguez. He said a survey of businesses that participated in the past found they built a list of potential clients and increased visits to their location after the expo. For the first time, the expo is being paired with a job fair put on by Arapahoe Douglas Works! Twenty employers will be on hand accepting applications. The idea is to import both consumers

and workers into Parker, Rodriguez said. The expo and job fair will run from 1 p.m.-9 p.m. Oct. 19, and the Taste of Parker runs in conjunction with the expo from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 20. Booth spaces are still available. Call 303-8414268 or visit www.parkerchamber.org for more information.

Hay: Winter is tough Hay continues from Page 1

She said her group has seen a significant increase in calls within the past six weeks and that winter is a particularly challenging time to feed animals, made even more difficult with high hay prices. “An average size horse of about 1,000 pounds will eat about 15 pounds of food per day,” Miller said. “But when the temperature drops below 15 degrees, that same horse can eat as much as 40 pounds per day.” Miller said the price of hay has even forced the ranch to make tough decisions by limiting the number of animals it can hold for the winter. “But we’ve branched out and started to network more,” she said. “While we can’t take every animal this winter, we are working to find foster homes and other to help these owners in distress.”

Candidates: Neither sees oil, gas as financial cure countability, and he feels exceptionally qualified to do just that. “I’m comfortable in saying there is nobody, except Commissioner Kurt Schlegel, that understands the county budget better me, and where we are and what challenges we face going into next year; I’ve done my homework,” he said. A spreadsheet Rowland put together and published suggests that if business as usual continues, the county will be out of money by the end of the year with about $133,000 left in the budget. “That represents less than two hours of operating funds, and we only

have $20,000 in our contingency fund; we’re supposed to have $3.1 million, and with tax revenues not coming in until March, Elbert County will barely make January and February payroll,” he said. “I’ve been in a lot of budget meetings and it’s safe to say that its difficult times for all counties in Colorado,” said Ross, “but Elbert County, in particular, has some serious challenges to balance the budget going forward, but I believe it’s doable, but it’s something that’s got to be addressed immediately.” Ross says his global experience in the facility management industry makes him well suited to deal with these types of fiscal issues, as well as to woo bigger businesses to

ture and our business base.” However, both candidates issued strong warnings not to depend on oil and gas revenue as a cureall for the county’s financial ills. “I don’t believe in counting money that’s not in the bank,” cautioned Ross. Rowland pointed out that the county won’t even know if the Niobrara shale formation is conducive to kinds of exploration and fracking needed to extract gas and minerals until seismic testing is completed early next year. “If it isn’t, they may walk away or go around it,” he said. Rowland said budget issues need to be resolved without anticipating oil and gas revenue. “We have to respond to our current situation,” he said. “We have a window of opportunity to turn this county around and save us from going off the economic cliff. I am confident that I have the skill sets to get us out of this mess, but I don’t think we’re gonna have too many more chances.”

move to the area. “As for improving our budget, we’re almost entirely funded by property tax revenue, and as you can see there’s very little commercial development, here,” he said. “I’d like to actively recruit companies to consider Elbert County — like a semiconductor design facility, something that’s clean, that provides jobs and draws commerce into the county.” But when it comes to oil and gas issues, both contenders agree, the potential for major exploration within the county will bring significant change, requiring balance. “I don’t hesitate to say this (oil and gas exploration) will be the single biggest change in the county’s history,” said Ross. “But it’s got its up-side and its down-side.” “I’m a free-market capitalist in the first order,” Rowland explained. “I’m for gas; I’m for oil; I’m for water. None of those are mutually exclusive, and we will potentially have a windfall from them, but what we are going to have, more than just an influx of cash, is an opportunity to improve our infrastruc-

OPINIONS/YOURS AND OURS

‘Everybody’s talkin’ at me . . . ’ “I don’t hear a word they’re sayin’.” The truth is nobody is talkin’ at me. I do get a few calls from pollsters, for whom I have some ripe words. They are able to circumvent my no-call number, but they can’t circumvent the depths of my wrath. It includes expletives in three languages. I might also use the words “reprisal” and “goat.” Otherwise I may get one land-line phone call a day. Zero cell phone calls, because I don’t have a cell phone. I am a freak. I think the freaks are about 8-9 percent of the population. I don’t even know my girlfriend’s phone number. We have been together one year, and we have spoken on the phone maybe three times. Don’t call me maybe, Carly Rae Jepsen. You’re very cute, but I just don’t like telephones anymore. I use mine to call my sister and to call my dentist and plumber, that’s about it. I am addicted to emails. It’s true. The benefit is that emailing improves my writing ability. That’s true too. I am a writer, not a public speaker (anymore; I

used to be a schoolteacher and yakked all the time). Almost any kind of writing improves my writing. Sometimes an email can be misleading. Am I being serious, am I joking? You have to be dexterous in emails or your next one is an explanation of your last one. I had to break off one correspondence. I told her it was like getting emails from a squirrel. Nuts. Non-sequiturs, convolutions, vortexes of imagery. I am a non-linear thinker, and I tend to write that way. One thing will lead to another to another. It drives some people crazy. Fortunately my girlfriend likes it and she can play along. I call that “pingpong.” I serve a reference and she returns

it. Most people can’t return the serve, and just look blankly at me. There’s an employee at Ace Hardware. I thought she might be a ping-pong player. I was way wrong; the last time I tried, I thought she was going to call security. (Security is a codger named Carl, by the way, who specializes in bulk screws.) I am reading a book that was recommended to me by one of my readers. “Quiet” by Susan Cain. “The power of introverts in a world that can’t stop talking.” “At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams.” Most of that applies to me. I am not a top-drawer listener, and I do like to talk. I have a voice and a face for radio, and I am full of opinions. But I haven’t been to a party in 20 years. Don’t invite me. I am lousy at self-promotion even though I am in a field that demands it in

order to get anywhere. Sometimes I don’t even announce or attend my own exhibitions. The funny thing is I keep getting asked (to exhibit); I was in four shows simultaneously in September and October. Who knows? Cain’s writing on shyness and introversion has appeared in The New York Times. I may be introverted and reclusive but I am not shy. I would say reluctant to be around other people. You won’t catch me on the streets of Highlands Ranch on weekends. It’s a zoo. There are no parades for me. No art festivals, weddings, and don’t even think about seeing my shiny face at a New Year’s Eve party. I would rather eat a sweatshirt. I know you are out there and wishing you had my life. I have no family picnics to schedule. I live in blissful quiet, most of the time. If the phone doesn’t ring, it’s me.

Disconnect to stay connected Wow, the other day my whole family was called out by my mother-in-law. She had been staying with us for a while, and one evening she had come into the living room, where she saw everyone in the family with their head down and iPhone, Droid, laptop, or iPad in their hands. Have we really gotten that bad? In retrospect, and unfortunately, the answer is yes. Here we were on a night when I wasn’t traveling and my children weren’t working at their part-time jobs or hanging out with their friends. We were all together in one room and yet totally disconnected. Now typically we leverage the power of technology to stay in touch with calls, Skype video calls, loving text messages, and postings and messages on Facebook because of our conflicting schedules. But I guess we had gotten so used to being connected virtually, maybe, just maybe, we had become disconnected in reality. So I wanted to see if we were the only family or people prioritizing our lives around technology and toys instead of focusing on what is truly important, a real connection to one another. And I am sure this will not surprise you, but almost everywhere I looked I found similar behaviors. On a recent trip I was late for a connecting flight, and although I barely made it to the gate on time I was the last one to board the plane. And since I was still stinging from the reality of being disconnected from my family, I was more aware and glanced at people sitting in their seats. Not too long ago you would see people engaging in conversation and getting to know their seatmates for the next few hours. Now, as I made my way through the cabin, I witnessed more than half the passengers with their ear buds already plugged in, heads down looking at their phone, Kindle, or iPad. Upon arriving at my destination and waiting to meet my party at a restaurant, I saw a family very close in number and ages to my own family. As they sat waiting for their name to be called by the hostess, dad was pacing near the door on a call, mom was texting, the eldest daugh-

ter had her iPod on and ear buds in, and their son was playing a game on his smart phone. Although I found many other similar situations, it did not provide me with any comfort nor validate or vindicate the inappropriate use of technology in my own home. I had already made a solemn commitment to never text and drive, never, not ever. Well now I am making the same decision and commitment to never text, email, play backgammon on my phone, or cruise around Facebook if it means missing another opportunity to communicate, connect, or just be with my family or friends. My good friend and author Billy Cox shared a quote with me, “Every minute we spend doing the wrong thing, is one less minute we have to do the right thing.” Don’t get me wrong, I think that technology is awesome, great fun, and absolutely increases productivity when used properly. But going forward, I am going to really consider how and when I will use it, asking myself, “Is this one more minute of doing the wrong thing that will rob me of one more minute of doing the right thing?” Kudos to my mother-in-law, for calling us out. Thanks, Mom. How about you, has technology taken over your relationships or do you disconnect to stay just a little more connected to your family and friends? I would love to hear all about it at gotonorton@gmail. com and I know that when we do connect it will be a better than good week. holes to companies that ship jobs overseas. We must address our

national debt by establishing fiscal discipline to eliminate the deficit and then begin paying down

the debt. Finally, Congress must create a stable economic environment to raise consumer confidence and encourage private investments. What is the best way to meet the nation’s growing energy demands? Energy production and independence are issues of national security. In the Navy, I learned the necessity of developing American energy sources, because of political instability in oil-producing regions. We need a balanced

all-of-the-above portfolio including traditional and innovative energy sources. I support the wind energy tax credit, because it creates jobs here in Colorado and encourages businesses to innovate and develop renewables. Colorado relies on the energy and jobs produced by oil and gas companies, so that must be central to any plan. Given increasing demands, we must also invest in renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and ethanol.

nesses. In order to plan for future growth and hiring, businesses need to know what kind of regulations to expect and what rate their profits are going to be taxed at. I have supported legislation that would keep taxes from increasing next year and repeatedly voted to get rid of burdensome regulations. What is the best way to meet the nation’s growing energy demands? Economic growth de-

pends on abundant, affordable energy. We should meet America’s growing demand by producing more American-made energy. I support a true “all of the above” strategy that includes development of traditional and renewable energy. We cannot continue to rely on hostile countries for our energy. I have passed legislation to increase domestic energy, which, if signed into law, would create 50,000 jobs. I also support the Keystone XL pipeline.

Ghouls, goblins get big welcome at SouthGlenn

Dressed in traditional German attire, Jurgen and Jackie Schwanke of Colorado Springs share a dance at the fourth annual German Day Celebration, which was held at the Southgate Shopping Center in Centennial.

EIN PROSIT! (A TOAST!) PHOTOS BY DEBORAH GRIGSBY Freezing drizzle may have dampened the parking lot, but certainly not the spirits at the fourth annual Deutscher Tag German Day celebration in Centennial. Sponsored by the Edelweiss Preservation Society, the festival honoring German culture, food and music was held Oct. 5 and 6 at the Southgate Shopping Center, on Yosemite Street south of Arapahoe Road, and was just about as authentic as it gets in Colorado, right down to the beer and brats. Chilly temperatures on Oct. 6 forced most activities into the main tent, but most seemed to enjoy the impromptu intimate arrangement.

Kids are invited to go trick-or-treating at The Streets at Southglenn from 5-9 p.m. Oct. 26. Live entertainment, free trick-or-treat bags from the merchants and surprises. A Giant Witch and her 9-foot-tall black cat at the fireplace at Commons Park; thriller dancing ghouls will be out and the Addams Family will be at the corner of East Commons Avenue and South York Street. Stop by the Humane Society of the South Platte Valley’s Spooky Pet Pumpkin Patch and adopt a new best friend. Enter your pet in a costume contest. (Registration for the contest takes place on the west side of Macy’s on East Briarwood Avenue, beginning at 6:30.) Free. Pick up a map at the management office.

Park district gets in spirit

South Suburban Park and Recreation’s annual Halloween Spooktacular will be from 5:30-8 p.m. Oct. 19 at Goodson Recreation Center, 6315 S. University Blvd., Centennial.. Entertainment for children up to 11: Little Monsters Mansion, Haunted House, Trick or Treat Street, Carnival Games. Children are urged to wear their costumes and must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older. Concessions will be available for sale, including hot dogs for $1. Admission is $6. 303-3475999, sspr.org.

Eerie wind

Dr. David Pinkow of Boulder helps kick off the official Deutscher Tag opening ceremonies with traditional music played on the alphorn. The fourth annual German Day celebration was held Oct. 5 and 6 at the Southgate Shopping Center in Centennial. Similar wooden horns are thought to have once been used for communication thoughout many of Europe’s mountainous regions.

Children from the Young Voices of Colorado concert choir perform both the German and American national anthems during the opening ceremonies at the German Day celebration. Cold weather and freezing rain put a damper on outside activities, but certainly not on the spirit of friendship between the two cultures.

All the way from Munich, members of the Allacher Goasslschnoizer, who perform musical pieces with the cracking whips, pose for a photograph inside the main tent at the fourth annual German Day held at the Southgate Shopping Center in Centennial.

“Music from the Dark Side: a Halloween Spectacular” will be the Colorado Wind Ensemble’s 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 concert at Littleton United Methodist Church, 5894 S. Datura St., Littleton. Disney’s “Fantasia,” “Hammersmith” by Gustav Holst and the premier of “Symphony for a Silent Film” by visiting French composer Laurent Jacquier are included in the program, conducted by Matthew J. Roeder. French guest conductor Gregory Olarey will lead the CWE in “Danse Macabre” by Saint-Saens, “March to the Scaffold” by Berlioz and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” by Dukas. Tickets: $15/$12/$5. Coloradowindensemble.org, 303-394-4552.

Youth is served

“Little Mermaid” is presented by the Younger Generation Players at 2701 W. Oxford Ave. #3, Sheridan, at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 19-20 and 2:30 p.m. Oct. 21. YGP offers year-round classes and workshops for kids who enjoy performing. Tickets: $15, 303-789-4444, ygplayers.org.

Seeing Stars

Tickets are available for the Masquerade Gala given by Stars of Castle Rock to raise awareness and funding for art students in the Castle Rock Public Schools. It will be held at Cielo in Castle Pines on Nov. 9. Art teacher Julie Holladay of Castle View High School organized the event, which will include a bayou-themed buffet, silent and live auctions including two- and four-foot star sculptures. Music by the Delta Sonics. Guest comedian Sam Adams and Lisle Gates, former Castle View principal, will appear. Tickets cost $75 at starsforcastlerock.com. Summer visitors to Denver’s Golden Triangle/Museum District, 16th Street Mall or nearby parks in late August and early September may have had the fun of watching one or more painters or photographers in action, recording the scenes through his/her personal lens. Denver hosts the largest urban plein air (painting outdoors) event in the nation, and this fall, we can enjoy some of the resulting artwork in two different venues: Byers-Evans House and Denver Public Library. Jim Beckner, Siobhan Keleher and Mikael Olson, winners in the professional category of the 2011 Denver Plein Air Festival, will exhibit their works through Oct. 31 at the Byers-Evans House Museum, 1310 Bannock St. (just west of the Denver Art Museum). Admission to the gallery area is free, although there is a charge for those who want to tour this beautiful historic house. Denver painter Jim Beckner graduated from Colorado State University in 1994, after study with Patrice Sullivan. He continued his education at Denver’s Art Students League under Mark Daily. Urban settings and their energy draw his attention as he seeks new visual solutions to interpret them. He uses a more realistic

approach to figurative images, often focusing on his wife, daughters and friends with experiments in color harmonies. Photographer Siobham Keleher, a fourth-generation Colorado native, enjoys her journey to “brief quiet moments observed amidst frenetic life, (which) compel me to record and share them.” She takes pictures “at whim” everywhere. “The camera has limited options — I can’t zoom or choose focus — forcing me to make more judicious decisions about the features I can control, honing my sense of composition.” Mikael Olson grew up in Evergreen and now lives in Denver, where he has studied painting at the Art Students League since 1995. Teachers include Quong Ho and Mark Daily. Spontaneous moments and occurrences inspire him to express his responses in bold colors, shapes, lines and textures. He said he loves it best when his work is “raw and lush, with a look that’s far from polished.” The Byers-Evans Museum gallery is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Free admission. dent in 1828. While the cast sings one after another musical numbers, starting with “Populism, Yea Yea!” his story is actually told, although one realizes it more in reflection than at the time. Some of his statements are tough to hear, but the upbeat mood carries throughout, including sassy interaction with the audience. Dicke, who plays the lead, as well as directing and designing the set, is riveting as he rams his way through our history. A distinctly different lesson than the one I, at least, learned in school! The small theater gives the audience an up-close and personal connection with the cast — different from the usual experience with a musical. But this one is unique all around and the close quarters work well. The lighting design by Jen Orf is especially effective — as is the sound. Teens would love it, I’d guess. (Leave the shorter family members at home.)

With an energetic young cast, Michael Friedman’s swift rock score — played by strong musicians — and dramatic lighting, it offers a fastpaced , thoroughly entertaining evening — even if there are lines that may make one blanch. Alex Timbers wrote the book. “Irreverent and raucous” was the response of a woman in the audience when asked to define the show. That pretty much hits the nail on the head. Jackson, our seventh president, was a lawyer, politician, judge, landowner and merchant. He has mixed reviews from historians: strong on individual liberty, man of the people, defeated the British in New Orleans, took 20 million acres of land in Georgia and Alabama, was responsible for the death of thousands of Native Americans (the Trail of Tears). The Democratic and Republican parties split over his election, with John C. Calhoun as his vice presi-

Cardinals prepare for key grid league game

Elizabeth-Fort Morgan clash may determine league championship By Tom Munds

tmunds@ourcoloradonews.com Elizabeth Coach Chris Cline told his players after they rolled to a 54-6 road Oct. 21 win over rival Englewood to enjoy the victory over the weekend but to be ready to begin preparations on Monday for what is the biggest game so far this season. “We are going up against Fort Morgan on Oct. 19 in the game that probably will determine the league champion” the coach said. “It is homecoming and winning the homecoming game is also important. So, if you want this football season to mean something, be ready to practice hard, ignore all the homecoming activities and focus on playing our A game and beating Fort Morgan.” The kickoff for the battle will be at 7 p.m. and the game will be played in the Elizabeth High School Stadium. The game will also include Cardinal homecoming events. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students with school identification. On paper the teams are evenly matched. Fort Morgan is 5-2 overall and 2-0 in league, both teams have rolled to victory against 3A Metro League East league and come into the Oct. 19 game with four-game winning streaks Fort Morgan will pass the football but their main offensive weapon is running the ball. In the first five games of the season, the Mustangs have averaged 48 yards a game passing while they have gained an average of 246 yards on the ground. Leading rushers so far this season for Fort Morgan are Nate Alexander with 451 yards and Jared Bohm with 423

yards The Cardinals present a more balanced attack in the first five games of the season, averaging 136 yards passing and 161 yards rushing per game. Defenses are tested because there are three players who are atop the rushing leader list, Jordan Buckham with 52 carries for 302 yards, Chasyn Nicholas with 40 carries for 321 yards and quarterback Brody Oliver with 41 carries for 216 yards. Oliver also had completed 44 of 115 passes for 127 yards and four touchdowns. Last week, Elizabeth traveled to Englewood and rolled to victory over the Pirates 51-6. Englewood took the opening kickoff and, two plays later, scored on a79 yard run from scrimmage which proved to be their only points of the night. The Cardinals apparently responded less than three minutes later with its own long run by Nicholas. But that scored was nullified by a penalty so, a couple plays later, he did it again, scoring the first of his four touchdowns on the night. The extra point try failed but late in the first quarter, Nicholas scored on a two-yard run and Oliver passed to Haden Freisner for the two-point conversion to extend the lead to 14-6. The Cardinals threw touchdown passes, ran, passed and kicked for extra points and, in the third quarter, Freisner intercepted a Pirate pass and ran it back for a pick-six. At that point, the score was 42-6 so quite a few Elizabeth reserves saw playing time. There was another Cardinal touchdown and a field goal to make the final score 51-6. Nicholas was the rushing leader with 14 carries for 170 yards and four touchdowns and teammate Ryan Schaefer carried nine times for 37 yards. Quarterback Oliver completed eight passes for 107 yards and also scored one rushing touch-

down. “This is a big win for us because Englewood and Elizabeth have developed a good rivalry that at least goes back to that 2000 overtime game,” Coach Cline said after the game. “We have a pretty good team this year. We are young and growing. Our team has a lot of weapons and we try to use all of them.” He said the Cardinal defense can be tough but sometimes make silly mistakes like not wrapping up tackles like they did against Englewood. But, other times, they are strong and can hold good teams in check. The defense was ready Oct. 12 as they limited the Pirates to 46 yards of offense and just six first downs “We want to win the league and, to do that, we have to beat Fort Morgan,” the coach said. “We match up very well with them. They do have a little size advantage but I think it will be a heck of a game.” Nicholas had a good game against Englewood. The statistics weren’t in but he rushed for at least 200 yards, caught a couple passes and he scored four touchdowns. “It was a pretty good night for me and for our team. I made good runs because our linemen had a great push up front and created holes for our ground game,” the junior said. “When we ran wide, our ends and receivers sealed off the defenders to clear the way so we could pick up good yardage.” He said scoring four touchdowns felt good but not as good as getting this big win to help us get ready for Fort Morgan. “This win definitely gets our confidence up as we prepare for Fort Morgan,” Nicholas said. “Our goal for next week is to come out, play smash-mouth football and go get the win.”

Points per game the undefeated Elbert H i g h School Bulldogs are averaging in football this season. Elbert’s lowest point total was 38; it’s highest 72.

Sports roundup: Bulldogs keep rolling Elbert football improves to 7-0 on season By Scott Stocker

sports@ourcoloradonews.com The Elbert football team chalked up a trio of impressive “firsts” in last Friday’s 46-14 victory against Simla in their crucial 8-Man, Black Forest League encounter. The first? It is believed to be the initial time in the schools football history that the Bulldogs have won their first seven games of the season. The second, is that a Bulldog athlete was able to rush for over 300 yards in a single game. And that effort by Blake Nicholas helped his team gain the third notable mark, total offense of 504 yards in one game. Nicholas carried the ball 35 times, rushing for 305 yards, to lead Elbert to its 7-0 season record, 3-0 in the league. However, there was also one drawback for the Bulldogs quarterback as he was intercepted three times while only passing for 37 yards. Nevertheless, the result dropped Simla to 2-1 in the league, 5-2 overall. Elbert also wrapped up the league championship with the win. “I haven’t been picked off in a year,” Nicholas said. “They keyed on me so it was important for Al Zelney and the other guys to step up. And, that they did. Simla and Kiowa are out of the way and we’ve got the league championship wrapped up. “We still want to be all the better,” Nicholas said. “Being 7-0 for the first time at this point of the season is a confidence builder. This is the first year that Simla is in our league and we knew they could give us a game. But they had some of their guys hurt and that took something away from them. I just hope their guys will be OK.” It was closely contested game for three quarters, tied 14-14 heading into the final 12 minutes. The prospects for a Simla win took a harsh turn when two of the Cubs stellar players, Damian Bell and Jason George, were injured. Simla scored it’s first touchdown on a 57-yard pass from quarterback Cody Norris to Dustin Campbell in the second quarter. Bell went down as he was attempting a run on the conversion attempt. George departed the game early in the third quarter shortly after the Cubs had gained the tie on a 4-yard pass from Norris to Eli Wallace. Norris ran the conversion closing out the Simla scoring.

“I don’t know at this point if we can count on either this week,” Simla coach Shane Zimmerman said. “We are waiting this week to see what the doctor reports on the two will be. But, there is a good chance they will not be ready to play this week.” Zimmerman felt his team played well against the unbeaten Bulldogs, but certainly ran out of gas in that fourth quarter. And, in the fourth, the toll was taken as Elbert came through with it’s 32-point effort. Elbert put the game away via a 12-yard run by Zelney, a 47-yarder by Nicholas, Zelney’s third score of the night on a 9-yard carry and a 15-yard run by Cody Pranger. Elbert coach Shawn Graves was pleased with the win, but not all that happy with the overall play of his Bulldogs despite the winning margin. “We just needed to stop shooting ourselves in the foot over the first three quarters,” Graves said. “We would have interceptions and the fumble. Simla will be a good one next year and we will be the ones rebuilding. But our kids are aggressive and they have been able to overcome the mistakes. Blake had only been intercepted three times over his three-and-a-half years here. “But we are the older and stronger team this year,” Graves said. “We ran the ball 58 times in the game and only threw 10 passes. One of his interceptions was my fault. He is a leader, a very smart kid. I listen to Blake if he’s got ideas to pass on. We’re fortunate to have him.” CROSS COUNTRY Elizabeth’s Gus Terry was certainly at his best during the Colorado 7 League Cross Country Championships last Thursday held at the Aurora Sports Complex. And best was his championship run in which he covered the distance in 16-minutes, :06.1 seconds. His effort helped lead the Cardinals to a second place finish in the team race behind Fort Morgan. Terry was all alone at the finish line as Josef Gertner of Fort Morgan came across with a time of 16:26.8. The Mustangs Forrest Hough was third (16:33.1) and Tola Walio fourth (16:35.6. Fifth place went to Weld Central’s Adam Rhodenbeck (16:40.7). Fort Morgan came away with the title with 27 points, followed by the Cardinals with 55 and Englewood with 71. Weld Central was fourth (106, Skyview sixth (125) and Vista Peak, seventh (145) to round out the team finishes. Jake Thompson finished in ninth with a time of 17:30.2 and was the next highest Elizabeth finisher. Willis Scott was 12th (17:43.1), Gave Houston was 14th (17:58.6) with Shane Hathaway rounding out the scor-

ing for the Cardinals with his 19th-place finish (18:56.8). Josh Lee was close behind his teammates at 21st (19:05.9) while Jake Boss finished 22 (19:08.9). The Elizabeth girls found the individual competition a bit tougher with Kayla Prario leading the Cardinals with a ninth-place finish (21:13.2). As a team, they were able to place third with 88 points, behind winning Fort Morgan (33) and Weld Central (67). Skyview (100), Vista Peak (103) and Englewood (122) completed the league field. Ellen Hughes finished 15th for Elizabeth with a time of 22:02.2. She was followed by teammates Cayla Bahr (20th, 22:23.6), Cori Small (21st, 22:28.3) and Rebekah Baird (23:05.9). The non-scoring runners for the Cardinals were Moriah Lee (114th, 23:39.1) and Tatiana Pickens (148, 28:34.6). SOFTBALL Elizabeth, coached by Summer Katzoff, saw its softball season came to a close with a pair of defeats in last Saturdays, Region 4, Class 4A tournament held at Silver Creek High School in Longmont. The Cardinals lost the first game to eventual region winner Berthoud, 10-4, then were eliminated from further play losing to Green Mountain, 12-2. The Cardinals finished the season 13-8.
