CU brings a new educational mission to The Wildlife Experience. By Marcia Neville
T
he Wildlife Experience natural history museum and art gallery has been a community asset for south Denver since 2002. With the recent announcement that Dave and Gail Liniger were giving the facility to the University of Colorado, the combined resources of the two organizations will enable an even better and more comprehensive educational experience to be offered to the local community. The facility, located just east of I-25 on Lincoln Avenue in Douglas County, will now be the permanent home of CU South Denver. $40 MILLION GIFT Dave Liniger is the chairman emeritus of The Wildlife Experience and co-founder of REMAX International, Inc. The Linigers’ gift of the building and property is valued at $40 million and is the largest real estate donation in the university’s 138-year history. In recognition of the Linigers’ generosity, the CU Board of Regents approved naming the facility the Liniger Building at the University of Colorado South Denver. “Dave and Gail Liniger have demonstrated a vision and commitment to serving our community and state that will have a substantial impact for decades to come,” said CU President Bruce D. Benson. “We value the confidence they have in CU and appreciate their transformational gift. The Wildlife Experience has been a cultural touchstone in south Denver and adding higher education will build on its commitment to the community.” The gift allows CU to expand its new south Denver presence that began when the Linigers and the university first collaborated in April. At that time, 11,000 square feet of the 151,000-squarefoot museum and art gallery were scheduled for renovation for university use. Since then, an upstairs gallery space has been transformed into two classrooms, a computer lab and a student and faculty resource center. Expansive storage space in the lower level has been converted into a state-of-the-art nursing simulation lab.

Goralczyk graduated from CU Denver in May and decided to take advantage of his company’s tuition assistance program right away. Finding exactly what he was looking for— a graduate-level course from the CU Denver College of Engineering and Applied Science— right in the neighborhood was a bonus. “I wish all my classes could be here,” he said.
CU’s Boulder and Colorado Springs campuses are planning to add programs in the near future. CU Denver will manage the facility on behalf of the system.
CONVENIENCE Of the dozen students on hand for the first night of engineering lecturer Albert Hinrichs’ Software Architecture class, two work in the south Denver area and seven live nearby. Reshmi Vijayakumara, the mother a 5-year-old, lives in Parker, just a 10- minute drive away. She saw the banners announcing the arrival of CU South Denver while driving past The Wildlife Experience. “I took a class with Albert before and I wanted to take another one,” she said, “but when I take a class downtown I’m often not home until 10 p.m. This was just the class that I was looking for and I’m lucky it was offered here. Otherwise, I might not have taken it.”
Classes began at the new Liniger Building at CU South Denver in August, while the museum and art gallery continues their services to the community.
“Gail and I are making this gift to CU to provide more services and more value to our south Denver community,” Liniger said. “The museum remains open, events will be held, and the public spaces will be available for rental. The added value now is the easy access to a CU education right here in south Denver.”
HISTORY-MAKING FIRST CLASS An enthusiastic group of engineering students, including Matthew Goralczyk, were recently the first students to take advantage of the new, accessible Liniger Building at CU South Denver. As Goralczyk packed up from a day’s work at ViaSat near the Park Meadows Mall, he had no idea that he was about to make history.
STUDENT NO. 1 As he scanned the just-completed renovations at the Liniger Building and took in that “new classroom” smell, Goralczyk learned that he was the first student

COMMUNITY INPUT Before entering into the initial collaboration with The Wildlife Experience, CU conducted a market study and interviewed leaders from south Denver’s major employers and professional organizations. The study identified gaps in educational offerings in the south Denver area, which accounts for one-third of the population of metro Denver and is home to a variety of engineering, finance and health-care related companies.

Founded in 2002, The Wildlife Experience was designed to serve as a cultural and educational center and a community asset for south Denver. The facility hosts exhibits in fine art, natural history and interactive science and provides space for private and community events. Thousands of children visit annually, attending school field trips, after-school activities and summer camps.
“The initial course offerings demonstrate the wide range of educational opportunities CU is bringing to south Denver,” said University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus Chancellor Don Elliman. “CU Denver is proud to be managing this initiative on behalf of the CU system, and we look forward to adding even more options for students with classes and faculty from all four CU campuses.”
Denver South Economic Development Partnership President and CEO Mike Fitzgerald views the addition of CU to south Denver as an enhancement to the area as a whole and specifically to the business community. Area professionals take advantage of graduate-level courses, like Software Architecture, in the Liniger Building’s new classrooms.
FIRST BUSINESS CLASS Several days later, the first business students arrived for their first CU South Denver class with Associate Professor Sarah Kovoor-Misra, PhD, and the story was very similar. Eight of the 11 attending the graduatelevel class, Leading Individuals and Teams, either live or work in south Denver and cited convenience and accessibility as a big factor in their decision to enroll.
CU PROGRAMS Moving forward, the new CU South Denver facility will be in nearly constant use and will host more people than ever before. Students are expected to be in the Liniger Building weekdays, weeknights and both Saturdays and Sundays. The first classes at the facility are being offered by CU Denver and the CU Anschutz Medical Campus. Among

“World-class education in south Denver is vital to our economic growth,” Fitzgerald said. “Having CU here will be a bonus for all the current employers and will be a draw as new businesses are considering the area. Comprehensive course offerings will attract global interest. CU’s decision to expand to our area couldn’t have come at a better time.” Input from south Denver’s workforce and residents will continue to be solicited to ensure that CU’s new offerings reflect the needs of the community. “We want more feedback about what are the best courses to meet the demand in south Denver,” said Douglas.
NEW TRADITION As for Matthew Goralczyk, CU South Denver’s self-titled “Student No. 1,” he’s proud to begin a new University of Colorado tradition. “It’s pretty wicked to be in the first class,” he said. “It’s historic, a new chapter in the history of CU. I expect this new, convenient location will bring in many more professionals looking to advance their careers.”

UCCS sees record enrollment, receives national recognition Enrollment Surpasses 11,000 Students for First Time More than 11,100 students enrolled at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs for the fall 2014 semester, a new record, and more than 5 percent larger than last year’s record student enrollment. Classes officially began Aug. 25 and official, detailed enrollment reports are expected in midSeptember. Preliminary reports prepared by the Office of Institutional Research show 11,199 students enrolled for the fall 2014 semester, a 601 student or 5.7 percent increase from the 10,598 students who enrolled for the fall 2013 semester. Since 2005, UCCS has grown by more than 3,500 students or 800-990-UCCS (8227) 47 percent. www.uccs.edu UCCS officials cautioned that final enrollment figures will differ slightly from preliminary reports compiled after only a few days of classes. “We are pleased that a record number of people selected UCCS as the place to continue their futures,” Pam Shockley-Zalabak, chancellor, said. “I appreciate the significant efforts of faculty and staff members who continue to provide personal support for students, explain that the university is an excellent value, and help students achieve their dream of a college education.” In addition to the overall enrollment, Homer Wesley, vice chancellor for student success and enrollment management, noted enrollment of the largest freshman class in UCCS history. For fall 2014, preliminary figures indicate 1,759 freshman are enrolled, a 177 student or 11.2 percent increase from the record-setting 1,582 students in the fall 2013 freshman class. Additional enrollment details will be provided following the official census date, Sept. 11. U.S. News Ranks UCCS in Several Categories UCCS is a top Western regional public university and its College of Engineering and Applied
Science is a national leader, according to the editors of U.S. News and World Report. In the 2015 college rankings edition, “America’s Best Colleges,” released Sept. 9, the magazine’s editors ranked the overall quality of UCCS 13th on its list of Top Public Regional Universities of the West and tied for 51st overall among all public, private regional universities in the Western U.S. In ranking schools that are “Best for Veterans,” U.S. News ranked UCCS 17th among Western Regional Universities. Regional universities provide a full range of undergraduate majors and master’s degree programs and a few doctoral programs. Among UCCS colleges, the magazine also ranked the UCCS undergraduate engineering program sixth among public universities whose
highest degree is a bachelor’s or master’s. This ranking includes the military service academies. Among public, private and for-profit universities, the UCCS undergraduate engineering program ranked 14th in the nation. The undergraduate program in the UCCS College of Business was ranked 113 in the nation among public and private national universities. “As always, we appreciate this recognition by a third-party organization that is committed to accurate data collection and providing students a view of institutions in their region and across the nation,” Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak said. “As we prepare to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the campus, these rankings recognize our past as we build for the future.” U.S. News and World Report rankings are based on its measures of academic peer assess-

A lot of students leave here seeing God at work in the world, and that knowledge redefines their values, priorities, and actions. It’s an impetus to help them become who they want to be. It’ll be the same for you. You won’t just study the facts; you’ll see how they relate to your experience. This happens, second, through the handson learning experiences CCU offers. Professors in our College of Adult and Graduate Studies realize they are teaching a population with more life experience than traditional undergraduates. So they leverage your experience in the classroom, discussing ideas and life stories. They realize you aren’t content simply to be told facts. You want to know the principles behind the facts, and you want to know how to apply them to your life. Here. Now. In your job. Thus, interactive learning here utilizes your natural experiences and desire to apply your learning. Our Master of Organizational Leadership degree, for example, includes courses on social media and public policy, and you’ll take action on the front lines of a pressing issue—combining your passions, experience,
and learning together. Our nursing degrees, at the bachelor’s and master’s levels, incorporate affective teaching. You’ll learn the hard skills and knowledge necessary in the nursing field, but you’ll also explore how to engage patients on the emotional level—and how they engage you emotionally. It’s a hugely important area of nursing often ignored, but it has tremendous consequences for how well you do your job. Our MBA students take an annual international business trip, applying leadership principles and international business practices firsthand. Students studying business administration will see how every decision they make has an ethical component to it, and they’ll learn how to care for others as well as the bottom line at our annual Values-Aligned Leadership Summit. Psychology students first turn inward on their own mental and emotional processes before helping others. Students in organizational management see how human nature affects their decisions, and gain insights about themselves along the way. All our classes incorporate hands-on experiences with chances to see how what you’re learning applies to your job and your life. It’s how we encourage, not just career fulfillment, but life change. Plus, our majors have been intentionally selected to ensure good job opportunities at the end of your study. We don’t open a new major unless it will help you. We also have a unique new program, Employment Management Services, that will help place you in jobs where you fit—and can thrive. Employment Management Services has built relationships with over 200 local businesses, ranging from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies, to help you get the job you desire.
