Davidson issues election report By Pat Hill
phill@ourcoloradonews.com The election Nov. 6 in Teller County was deemed a success with no pervasive equipment or personnel issues. In a status report to county commissioners, Al Davidson, manager of elections for Teller County, emphasized the high points of the general election. The longest documented wait time was approximately 10.5 minutes for a person

who chose to wait in order to have access to a touch-screen voting machine rather than a paper ballot. This is in contrast to the reported waits of up to two and a half hours in 2008 and 2010. “I believe our judges were adequate in number and sufficiently trained to make the election a success at all of the voting locations,” Davidson writes. The report is glowing in its praise of the county employees. “Perhaps the single biggest contribution by a non-elections staff member was that
of Dee Bordage who accepted the responsibility to resurrect a totally-failed effort to recruit and manage election judges,” states the report. “She, along with Kathy Davidson, pulled this important effort from certain failure to success that manifested itself on Election Day.” Bordage is the administrator’s assistant. As well, Davidson praised employees Cathy Fabiano, Sheryl Decker, Sandi Stratton, Sheriff Mike Ensminger, Susan Halterman, the facilities-management department and other county staff who served as
election judges. In the report, Davidson cited voting statistics in Teller County: 2,675 residents, 22 percent, took advantage of early voting 2,451, or 20 percent, voted at the Vote Centers Nov. 6 7,108 registered voters, 58 percent, voted by mail ballot As well, there were no complaints from voters, the political parties or other governmental agencies to the county or the Secretary of State’s office, Davidson added.

Slow to boil in public, Teller County commission chair Jim Ignatius erupted in anger at the commissioners’ meeting Nov. 21. He started with a simmer, reading from a report on the November election by Al Davidson, manager of elections in Teller County and representative of the Secretary of State. Davidson was hired after the secretary, Scott Gessler, mandated that J.J. Jamison Teller County Clerk and Recorder J.J. Jamison from her election responsibilities. “We have had no complaints from voters, the (political) parties or other government agencies,” states the report read by Ignatius. “I also want to mention the tremendous effort given to us by our three lead judges, Rich McKee in Cripple Creek, Rip Blaisdell in Woodland Park and Catherine DiMauro in Divide. I want to also recognize the other 63 judges and 21 student judges who attended training and performed so well on election day.” But Davidson issued a note of caution. “The fate of future elections is in good hands with Krystal Brown and Stephanie Fisher, as long as they are allowed to do what is necessary to conduct successful elections,” the report states. Still burned over the snafus that happened during the June primary, Ignatius boiled over. “This man is a class act; without him, I think we would have had an absolutely devastating outcome,” said Ignatius, speaking to Jamison. “I have mixed Excoriated continues on Page 2
Jamison’s staff draws praise; clerk doesn’t By Pat Hill phill@ourcoloradonews.com There is no relief for J.J. Jamison, Teller County’s embattled clerk and recorder. Sanctioned by the Secretary of State in August for inefficiencies prior to the primary election in June, Jamison was forced to relinquish her responsibilities to a representative from the secretary’s office, Al
Davidson. Last month Davidson issued a report praising Jamison’s staff for contributing to the success of the general election. However, the report was glaring in its lack of praise for Jamison. “My focus was on leaving the staff in a position to conduct successful future elections; however, I spent little time with the Clerk and Recorder, so whatever issues were
there before, probably remain,” Davidson writes. Reacting to Davidson’s assessment of the election, county commission chair Jim Ignatius was blunt. “While I am extremely proud of the accuracy and outcome of this election especially the staff we hired in Al (Davidson) and Deb (Silva) as well as the extremely dedicated staff with Krystal Brown, Stephanie Fisher and all the support staff from various departments, I am very dis-

appointed in our clerk’s continued lack of abilities as is mentioned and witnessed once again, throughout the process,” Ignatius writes in an email. Jamison’s inefficiencies came to light when her office failed to include a signature line and affidavit on the mail-in ballot envelopes for the primary in June. Subsequently, the county incurred additional expenses to pay the salaries of Davidson and Silva. “This has cost the taxpayers of Teller County about $225,000 for this year’s election which is approximately $143,000 more than it should have and the bills are still coming in,” Ignatius writes. In bullet points, Davidson offered assurance for future elections in Teller County: • I believe the staff is fully capable of carrying out the elections that will occur in 2013 and 2014.
• I will be preparing an after-action report that will detail some changes I think should happen. This may be several weeks in the making but I will submit it to the board of commissioners when it is complete. • I am leaving all of the documents and records that we created for the staff to use. • I have recommended that they schedule regular staff exercises that are a form of mock elections, so that forms, procedures, etc., can be tested and improved. • I have found the staff eager to learn and participate. I believe Stephanie Fisher and Krystal Brown now have an excellent concept of what goes into a successful election. • This election was not a good model for that, as we started months later than we should have to prepare; however, I have discussed Praise continues on Page 7

When the arson fire destroyed Town Hall in February in Green Mountain Falls, Pastor Larry McKnight at Joyland Church came to the rescue. accommodate the long-term effects of the town losing its public center. “The remodel should be ready by Thanksgiving and then we’ll recapture the space they’ve been using; and the gym will go back to being a gym,” McKnight said. The town’s insurance covers the rental agreement with the church. Former site of the Rocky Mountain Christian Center, Joyland, a complex of two buildings, a parking lot and open space, continues the ministry of the Agape Fellowship. “The central mission of the church is to reveal the love of God through Jesus Christ. How we do that has changed, the culture, the songs, the look of the church but the mission remains the same,” McKnight said. The congregation is active, involved and recently collaborated on a beautification project in the main building where services are held. “We call it beautification - think of all that God has invested in the trees and flowers,” McKnight said. “We had these inspirational ideas that I believe came from the creativity of God.” In the adjacent prayer room, McKnight and the volunteers added an electric fireplace encased in granite and stone. The artistry is a result of McKnight’s former life as a stone carv-
er. “We were being driven by a strong sense that the beauty of the place was important to the Lord,” McKnight said. With a new name and a commitment to modernizing the services through music and active participation from the congregants, McKnight focuses on the joyous. “The world can be a depressing place. Beauty opens the door to reaching out to the community and being a servant in that way,” he said. “We have a decent sound system and have talked about having concerts.” McKnight ties the beautification project to enhancing the worship of God. “The best the building can be is a frame to put the handiwork of God on display,” he said. “And we had kind of a ratty worn-out frame. So we had an upgrade on the frame.” If the world can be depressing, for the congregants at Joyland, the relief is in the collective worship during the encounter service. “That encounter produces the realization that God loves them, that our sins and failures do not define us, that God has provided us a way beyond those things,” McKnight said. “When they encounter Jesus they discover He’s good, He’s not mad at us and is in a good mood.”
emotions; as proud as I am about this thing, I am so stinking disappointed in you it blows me away. Your constant lying, your inability to perform your job, I mean it just absolutely blows me away. “Everything you touched throughout this process, whether it was this report or the other two reports you denied, did not serve the people of this county the way you should have. And it’s very disappointing. Thank God for Al Davidson, I hope you don’t chase away your other stellar employees. You have staff that does amazing stuff, so treat ‘em well, would you?” Jamison did not respond to the criticism while continuing to record the meeting. Several days after the meeting, Ignatius offered several examples of Jamison’s public denials.
“She said publicly that she was ‘blindsided’ by the secretary’s report. The secretary told us he had been working with the clerk’s office for 18 months prior to the June 26 primary,” Ignatius said. As well, Jamison said she asked for help from the secretary’s office, Ignatius said. “We were ordered, mandated, by the Secretary to hire Al (Davidson) and Deb (Silva),” Ignatius said. As far as the missing signature line, Jamison blamed the vendor in a letter to the editor, Ignatius said, referring to Jamison’s letter published in the Aug. 29 edition of the Courier View newspaper. “The missing line was 100 percent her responsibility.” Ignatius vowed to have more evidence at the commissioners’ meeting Dec. 6.

Small-claim suit filed against IREA Judge will issue ruling in December By Norma Engelberg
nengelberg@ourcoloradonews.com Phillip Ramey of Woodland Park has filed a suit against Intermountain Rural Electric Association in Teller County Small Claims Court. IREA is a member-owned association that has been providing power for a large portion of Colorado, now including much of Teller County and the part of western El Paso County that includes Palmer Lake, since it was incorporated in 1938. As an energy cooperative, the association allocates its net profits to members’ capital accounts based on how much electricity each uses. In good years members receive checks but in years where earnings and expenses don’t keep pace, annual payments are deferred. When Ramey found out that he and other IREA members would not be receiving their allocations from the association’s 2011 profits and then found out that the association was still
handing out education grants to the tune of $21,000 per year (since 1988 as stated on the association’s website), he decided to take the IREA to court for $540, the amount he said he should have received for two years of missing allocations. He filed his claim charging the association with “Breach of Fiduciary Responsibility” and “Breach of Contract” on Oct. 15. He said the association has every right to use member allocations for operating capital but he contends that it doesn’t have the right to use member allocations for community involvement. “Bottom line here is members should be given complete and transparent information about Public Affairs and Community Involvement spending … ,” Ramey stated in an email dated Nov. 28. “… The association’s propaganda does nothing except talk about how they are working so hard to keep our rates low when they have spent millions of dollars for (community improvement) items.” He added that the association says it polled its customers for permission to use money for community improvements but that he was never asked. “If I lose the case, there are another
100 customers ready to file their own suits,” Ramey said. “If I win, they’re ready to file a class-action suit.” The case was heard on Nov. 27 and Judge Linda Billings Vela will issue the Order of the Court before Dec. 14. On Nov. 27, IREA was represented by General Manager Patrick Mooney and in-house counsel Amy Watson, who filed a motion to dismiss the case and another to quash Ramey’s subpoena for documents. Ramey had asked for “a complete accounting of all discretionary expenses related to awards, grants, directors’ luncheons, public relations events, travel expenses” etc. According to court documents, Watson based the motion to quash the subpoena based on three arguments; first, that subpoena doesn’t describe the documents in enough detail; second, that the association doesn’t possess the documents and that getting and copying them would be too costly; and, third, that Colorado’s rules for small claims courts doesn’t allow for such subpoenas. Billings Vela denied the motion to dismiss and tabled the motion to quash. Watson was not available for comment on this case.
Community investment creates goodwill IREA says assistance is sound business practice By Norma Engelberg
nengelberg@ourcoloradonews.com Intermountain Rural Electric Association has been actively supporting the communities it serves for many years. According to its website, the association not only hands out $21,000 a year in scholarships to high school students each year, it also conducts safety demonstrations for grade school chil-
dren, supports school libraries and community recycling programs, and serves an annual Christmas luncheon to senior citizens in Douglas and Elbert counties. The handbook that all new customers receive states: “Along with financial support for economic development, IREA also supports local emergency medical and fire districts, senior and youth groups, public schools, and a wide range of other charitable and civic activities.” “We do this in an effort to engender goodwill in the communities we serve,” said Mike Kopp, IREA manager of corporate affairs. “And raising the

After 15 years, Kathy Blough is handing over the reins of the Community Cupboard to Janie Child, her assistant for the past four years. “I could not have picked a better person e to take my place,” Blough said. “She was already on e top of everything.” For Blough, leaving the cupboard after so many years elicits a rush of memories. “It was an eye-openr ing experience when I first r started,” she said. “The biggest challenge was trying to make the right decision for the diverse clients and volunteers while keeping the cupboard’s best interest always in mind.” Known as the go-to person for help, Blough credits collaboration with other organizations for the collective approach to filling gaps in temporary needs. “There are always homeless in Woodland Park, you just don’t see them on the

“Four years ago, it was nothing like it is today,” Child said. In turning over the responsibility of harboring a place of safety, Blough credits Child for easing the burden of letting go. “I just knew it was time, that I couldn’t give 100 percent of what I needed to give,” Blough said. “I think the cupboard deserves somebody who can do that. Medically, I just couldn’t do it anymore.” To qualify as Blough’s successor Child trained for the job from the proverbial
ground up. “I started back in sugar and flour - and cleaning the bathrooms,” she said. From sugar and flour, Child moved up to dispensing groceries to clients and onward to leading the organization while Blough was on medical leave last year. “There’s a lot of physical labor and mental stress,” Blough said. “You lose a lot of sleep wondering if you got everything done.” In a stressful job, Blough and Child focus on the positives. “We get more hugs and people crying tears of gratitude,” Child said. Blough added, “People are overwhelmed by the generosity and by how much food they actually get,” Blough said. “Many times people say `this is all for us?’ But it’s not just thanks from the clients it’s also from people in the community thanking us for what we do.” Not everybody can be a cupboard director. “It takes a certain kind of person, one who has a caring heart and is not judgmental,” Child said. “I think if you started judging people you’d turn in to a hard person. Compassion is huge.”

A fundraising venture for Habitat for Humanity, ReStore offers a variety of experiences from flea market to estate sale with an accent on garagesale treasure hunt. The time is right, said Bruno Mattedi, president of the board of the nonprofit organization in Teller County who initiated the project. “Three or four years ago the board did an analysis to try and start a ReStore based on construction data,” Mattedi said. “But construction was going downhill at the time.” In April Walter and Yolanda Miranda volunteered to open and manage the business. “It was all a matter of finding the right location and this one came up,” Wal-
ter said. Convenient with a large parking lot to accommodate trucks unloading furniture donations, the ReStore is at 1750 E. U.S. Hwy 24, one stop east of the traffic light at the Safeway-Paradise intersection. “I expect to fill this place up by the end of the month,” Walter said. OPINIONS / YOURS AND OURS
Cross of Gold: Bryan, free silver, and $100,000 bets The very first time Colorado voters gave their electoral votes to a Democrat, it came on the heels of a speech by William Jennings Bryan, who first delivered that speech July 9, 1896, at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. “If they dare to come out in the open field and defend the gold standard as a good thing, we shall fight them to the uttermost, having behind us the producing masses of the nation and the world. Having behind us the commercial interests and the laboring interests and all the toiling masses, we shall answer their demands for a gold standard by saying to them, you shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown of thorns. You shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold,” ended Bryan. His dramatic speaking style and rhetoric roused the crowd to a frenzy. The response, wrote one reporter, “came like one great burst of artillery.” Men and women screamed and waved their hats and canes. “Some,” wrote another reporter, “like demented things, divested themselves of their coats and flung them high in the air.” The next day the convention nominated Bryan for president on the fifth ballot, according to History Matters. Such bi-metalism sentiments made Bryan a tremendous hit here in Colorado at the time.
In the 1896 election here, Bryan overwhelmed Republican McKinley in the state, 161,269 to 26,279. Alva Adams was selected for Colorado Governor and most of the state offices were filled by a Democratic-Silver Republican slate. The fame of Bryan’s “Cross of Gold” speech led him to repeat it numerous times on the Chautauqua lecture circuit, where he was an enormously popular speaker. In 1903, thousands gathered to hear the master deliver the same speech from the balcony of the New Sheridan Hotel in Telluride (see photo). In 1896, the issue was whether to endorse the free coinage of silver at a ratio of silver to gold of 16 to 1. (This inflationary measure would have increased the amount of money in circulation and aided cash-poor and debt-burdened farmers.) Bryan, who was 36 at the time, became the youngest candidate to be selected by a major party and went on to run for election
in 1900 and again in 1908. “Not the strangest of the many strange episodes during the campaign was the action of Colorado’s “Mr. Gold” himself — Cripple Creek’s Winfield Stratton — who endorsed free silver and Bryan,” writes Carl Ubbelohde, Maxine Benson and Duane Smith in “A Colorado History.” “In fact Stratton went even further. He announced a public wager of up to $100,000 that Bryan would win, a possibility that the regular Republicans believed would immediately and substantially reduce his own personal fortune.” “He not only came out for Bryan,” wrote Marshall Sprague in Money Mountain. “But he placed on deposit at the First National Bank $100,000 in cash to be bet on Bryan if someone would put up $300,000 on McKinley. If Stratton lost the bet, that was that, if he won, the $300,000 would be given to the Colorado Springs Free Reading Room and Library Association.” “News of that bet flashed around the world and for a week McKinley and Bryan found themselves losing much front-page space to Stratton. His bet was the largest ever offered by one man on an election. And to most people it seemed as peculiar an act as a man could commit. Why, if Bryan won and the United States resumed silver coinage at sixteen to one, Stratton’s gold wealth would be cut in half!” Sprague
wrote. Stratton explained himself in a note given to each reporter at a press conference in Colorado Springs: “I don’t make the offer because of any information that I have on the election, but I have a feeling that Bryan is going to win. I am deeply interested to see Bryan elected. I realize that the maintenance of the gold standard would perhaps be the best for me individually, but I believe that free silver is the best thing for the working masses of this country. It is because I have great respect for the intelligence and patriotism of the working people and I believe that they will see their duty at the polls that I am willing to make such an offer,” said Stratton’s note. The move put the Republicans on the defensive and though they made all sorts of noise and motions to give the impression that were happy to cover such a bet, they never did, which in retrospect was fortunate for Stratton. Bryan was a clear winner in Colorado. In the rest of the nation, however, McKinley carried the majority of the states and Bryan and Free Silver was defeated. Bryan, sometimes called the perennial candidate, later became a key figure in the prohibition movement and antiDarwinism efforts and eventually served as Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson.
Self-help books sometimes send wrong message Self-help books are selling like hotcakes, better in fact because many of them will tell you that hotcakes aren’t that good for you. According to an article in the Christian Science Monitor, Americans spend about $2 billion a year on self-help books and Amazon can sell you about 400,000 of them in hundreds of topics. These books have become the bread and butter of today’s publishing industry. OK, I’ve read a few self-help books in my lifetime, including the most helpful self-help blockbuster of all time: the Bible. However, with a few exceptions, it’s a genre I try to avoid like the plague. Self-help books are defined as “books written with the intention to instruct readers on a number of personal problems.” Do you want to be a better parent, lose weight, become less boring, get what you want, build a better business, survive the Zombie Apocalypse, stop growing older (how’s that
working for you?) or any number of other desires? Well, there’s a (few dozen) book(s) for that (and probably a few apps, too). As a genre, self-help books, also called “self-fashioning” and “self-improvement,” have been around awhile. The Egyptians had codes of conduct and several famous Romans wrote about how to make friends, fall in love, find success and other topics that resonate with today’s self-help market. There are good self-help books, written by experts and backed by science, but a lot
of them are written by the pop-psychologist/troubled-celebrity of the week. Do we really need Jessica Simpson’s advice on dream weddings, Whoopi Goldberg’s book of manners, parenting tips from Britney Spear’s mother or anything from Shirley McClaine? Do you think Janet Jackson has found herself well enough to tell you how to do it? There are things we can’t change about ourselves. We can’t pick our births, our parents, our genes, heck some of us don’t even get to pick our pets; we inherit them from our kids but despite all that, these books often overestimate our ability to change. And even with the disclaimer that “this book was not written to replace the need for therapy or counseling…,” many of them also give a sense that change will be easy and nearly instantaneous. When that doesn’t happen, we blame ourselves rather than the writer.
Here’s good advice from Psychology Today about that: “If a self-help author’s advice doesn’t ring true, this doesn’t mean that you’re the one with the problem.” This is true even if you did spend $30 for the book. Don’t get me wrong; there are plenty of things we can change about ourselves but the motivation to make those changes usually comes from within. As motivational speaker Denis Waitley said: “There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them.” For advice about picking the best selfhelp books, check out “Five Things You Need to Know About Self-Help Books” at http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/ fulfillment-any-age/201205/five-thingsyou-need-know-about-self-help-books.

Broncos’ mascot comes to Columbine Miles promotes healthy eating, daily physical activity By Norma Engelberg
nengelberg@ourcoloradonews. com Columbine Elementary School students spent an afternoon with Miles, the official Broncos mascot. He came to the school on Nov. 29 to promote the Western Dairy Association/National Football League’s Fuel Up to Play 60 program to help students eat healthy and get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. The entire student body gathered in the school gym for videos, singing, music and dance, punctuated by the Miles’ highlycharged antics. He entertained while educating with the help of signs and his friends at the Denver
Bronco in the videos provided on the big screen. A team of fourth- and fifthgraders talked to students about the value of eating breakfast every morning, getting active and having fun. In conjunction with the videos featuring his friends, Miles then showed the students how to “Eat More of Four,” featuring the foods most students don’t get enough of: dairy products, vegetables, fruits and whole grains. After the assembly student team stayed to get Miles’ autograph. Children can go www.fueluptoplay60.com to record their activities, meals, blog and win prizes, including a chance to win tickets to Super Bowl XLVII in February.

Franke steps to forefront for Panthers Senior ready to take on a bigger role By Danny Summers
sports@ourcoloradonews.com WOODLAND PARK - The Woodland Park High School girls basketball team began the season with two losses last week. But a star may have been born in the process. Senior point guard Michelle Franke provided a huge spark during the Panthers’ 3733 loss to Buena Vista on Dec. 1 as the host team nearly overcame a 12-point fourthquarter deficit. Franke scored eight of her team-high 10 points in the quarter - the final two on a layup with 13 seconds remaining - as Woodland Park nearly pulled out an improbable victory. “Michelle stepped up, and that’s what I’ve been waiting for her to do the past year and a half or so,” said Woodland Park coach David Graf. “Say, hey `I’m the best ball handler on this team. I’m going to take over a little bit’ “I’m just really proud of the way Michelle stepped up tonight.” Franke, a two-year starter, said she was impressed with the intensity her teammates showed late in the game. “We just had a desire to win and we wanted to make a statement at the beginning of the season,” she said. Woodland Park found itself in a deep hole against Buena Vista when it was outscored 12-2 in the first quarter. The Pan-
Woodland Park senior Alexa Garrick drives around a pair of defenders. Photos by Paul Magnuson thers closed the gap to 20-13 at halftime, but came out slow again in the third quarter as Buena Vista used a full court press to build a 31-19 lead heading into the fourth. That’s when Franke went to work, driving toward the hoop and taking shots when the situation allowed, or dishing off to teammates for high percentage shots. “We switched to our zone defense and
we played it a little tougher,” Graf said. “We were flying around and it gave us some opportunities on offense. “I’ve been preaching to the girls you have to have confidence. At the end, Michelle was attacking. The other girls were attacking and we were doing alright.” Panthers senior forward Hannah Erickson said a lack of intensity on the players’ part was the reason Woodland Park fell behind. “We just weren’t ready to play the game in the first quarter,” said Erickson, who scored six points. “So once coach Graf motivated us we got motivated enough and wanted to win the game.” Erickson added that the onus is on the players for coming out motivated and ready to play hard. “It’s definitely mental,” she said. “It has a lot to do with intensity. The more intensity you have the more you’ll want to make the right decisions.” Woodland Park lost its opener to Fruita Monument, 48-20, on Nov. 30. Erickson paced the Panthers with seven points, while fellow seniors Shannon Bingen and Reanna Marcengill added five and four, respectively. “We played with a lot of intensity the first half, and then it just kind of went away,” Graf said. “It’s a consistency thing. They have to realize that they have the ability.” The girls have three more homes games this week when they host the Mountain Madness Tournament. The Panthers open with Vista Ridge on Thursday, followed by games on Friday and Saturday with LewisPalmer and Florence, respectively.
“We have the heart; we have the will to win,” Erickson said. “We just have to maintain that 110 percent. “Our goal is to win all three games. “If you’re not going to go hard, why go at all.”

Panthers get big win in debut Lays leads the way with 21 points By Danny Summers
sports@ourcoloradonews. com WOODLAND PARK - The Woodland Park High School gymnasium was rocking and rolling on Dec. 1 as a new era in Panthers boys basketball got underway. With first-year coach Joel
Herman calling the shots, the Panthers introduced an up-tempo offense and sometimes suffocating defense to gain a 57-48 victory over Buena Vista. “This feels outstanding,” said Woodland Park senior guard Evan Lays, who scored a ‘lifetime high’ 21 points. “We put a ton of hard work into practice and
Evan Lays scored 21 to lead Woodland Park to a win in the Panthers’ season opener. Photos by Paul Magnuson
we saw that it paid off today.” Lays’ night included making four 3-point baskets in the first half alone. He also drained a 3-pointer and scored seven points during the critical fourth quarter when the Rangers outscored Buena Vista 22-5. “I think we can do everything, but 3-pointers are definitely a strong part of our game,” Lays said. “You want to take what the defense gives us. If the defense is going to give us the threes, we’re going to take them.” Woodland Park made 8 of 16 3-point attempts in the first half, but just 2 of 14 in the second half. Sophomore swingman Dakota Herman (16 points in his first varsity game) made four 3-pointers, including three in the first half. But it was Herman’s 3-pointer at the 5:17 mark of the fourth that gave Woodland Park a 44-43 lead that it would never relinquish. Herman also played a key role in helping Woodland Park get off the mat after Buena Vista built a 10-point lead (43-33) late in the third quarter. He stole an inbounds pass and made a layup as the clock expired. “We just all kind of picked it up at that point,” Dakota said. “It just kind of lifted our spirits. We were kind of getting down on each other.” Inspired, the Panthers revved up their running
game in the fourth quarter to beat a weary Demons team into submission. Buena Vista was forced to revert to fouling in an attempt to keep the score close. Woodland Park converted 13 of 22 free throws in the quarter to preserve the victory. “All the running we’ve been doing paid off right there,” said Panthers senior forward Jacob Censner, who scored 11 points, including 7 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter. “We just have to keep playing to the end. Things will take care of themselves. We can’t get too comfortable.” As wonderful as the final result was the Panthers, there were some areas that need improvement. They won despite making only six field goals in the second half on 6 of 28 shooting. They also let a 6-point lead slip away the final three minutes of the second quarter and went into the locker room trailing 30-29. The Panthers looked sluggish in the third quarter as Buena Vista scored 13 of the first 17 points. Woodland Park’s play was also marred by a number of turnovers. “Maybe we were a little sluggish,” Joel Herman said. “We came out the locker room at halftime working on our little layup drill. Maybe they need to gather themselves, shoot around a little bit, and then get into that. “But we eventually found our legs. That’s why we train as hard as we do.” Herman added that at
Woodland Park sophomore Sam Hopfe tries to get a shot off against the Buena Vista defense. this point of the season his team is not defined in any one way. “We’ll take whatever we can get,” the charismatic coach said. “If we have a three we take it. If we have something close to the basket we’ll take a layup. We just have to be fundamentally sound when we’re going to the basket.” Prior to the game, Wood-
land Park C squad coach Joe Roskam jokingly reminded Herman that even the legendary John Wooden lost his first game as UCLA’s coach. “It’s a big burden off my shoulders; it’s a big burden off the boy’s shoulders,” Joel Herman said. “The boys earned that victory. That’s their win. It means that they can only go up from here.”

No denying DeNio Woodland Park grad busy on, off pitch By Danny Summers
sports@ourcoloradonews.com In the sky or on the ground, Ashley DeNio is always on the move. And she wouldn’t have it any other way. Last week, the 2010 Woodland Park High School graduate was in Orange Beach, Alabama, helping the Spring Arbor University women’s soccer team to the NAIA national semifinals. The Cougars came up short against Lindsey Wilson, 2-1. “I wasn’t really expecting to get there,” said DeNio, a starting center midfielder on the team. “It was pretty cool.” DeNio finished fifth among Cougars in scoring this season with 21 points (8 goals, 5 assists). Spring Arbor enjoyed its best year in school history, finishing with a 20-3-2 record. “I think we could have beat (Lindsey Wilson) if we had fresh legs,” said DeNio, who is majoring in math with an emphasis in secondary education. “We led 1-0 and kept with `em the first half. We just wore down in the second half.” Spring Arbor’s impressive run included victories in consecutive days (Nov. 27-28) over Kansas Wesleyan, 3-1, and Vanguard, 4-3, on penalty kicks after 110 minutes of regulation

player and two overtimes. DeNio converted her penalty kick. With just one day of rest, the No. 6 Cougars were in a tough position against second-seededseed Lindsey Wilson. The two clubs played to a 1-1 tie in season opener on Aug. 25. “After we beat Vanguard, it was like `Wow, we can do this,’” DeNio said. “We were thinking we can go all the way.” Spring Arbor has enjoyed its three best years in school history since DeNio came on board. In 2010, the Cougars won the Mid-Central College Conference and advanced to the first round of the NAIA tournament. After they were eliminated, they played in the National Christian College Athletic Association national tournament, which brings together teams from all divisions. Spring Arbor defeated Palm Beach Atlantic on penalty kicks (DeNio made her kick) in the championship game. In 2011, Spring Arbor reached the Sweet 16 of the NAIA tournament for the first time in school history. “We’re trying to go further each year,” DeNio said. DeNio, a junior, is getting the most out of her college experience. In addition to playing soccer, she is also part of the school’s ROTC program. She is working toward a DeNio continues on Page 15

Keeping the surprise was tough but they did it. “I was stunned,” said Teller County administrator Sheryl Decker, who was named “County Administrator of the Year” by the Association of Colorado County Administrators. “It was memorable, honoring and humbling,” Decker said of the award ceremony Nov. 27 in Colorado Springs. Unknown to her, Decker’s family waited behind the scenes to be part of the celebration. Nominated by commissioners Bill Buckhanan, Jim Ignatius and Dave Paul, Decker was recognized for

her leadership, particularly during the ongoing recession. “Anyone can manage during easy economic times…it takes a true leader to manage during these tough economic times and Sheryl has done an outstanding job navigating this past year,” the commissioners wrote in the nominating form. For Decker, along with maneuvering the fiscal challenge is the human cost of decreased revenue. “We’ve lost a lot of our workforce through attrition; we’re down by about 85 percent,” she said. “Everybody who works with us is working harder with less.” Decker credits the team effort as a critical piece of balancing the county’s budget, one that aims for fairness for all. “Our budget process is very inclusive, everybody has the same mission,” she said. “The department heads all need their money but are willing to look at what’s best for the entire county. I think it’s a lot of good people wanting to do the right thing at the right time.” Under Decker’s leadership, the budget may skew toward fulfilling the greater needs of one department over another as temporary stopgap. “For instance, if the sheriff needs to give up a little bit of his budget so the treasurer can get new software, it’s never been an issue,” Decker said. “They all work together. It just depends on what the needs are.” In a position of authority that, from afar, looks like a lot of paperwork and decisions, Decker is emotionally invested in the team. “I love it when we go through plans and actually get to a place where we’ve improved services where we were lacking,” she said. “There are a lot of rewarding parts of being an administrator.” Decker began her career with Teller County in 1996 as the deputy administrator under Greg Winkler, succeeding him when he retired in 2006. Decker and her husband Doug have one daughter, Sheridan, 16.
