Get ready for fun in the sun
Live each weekend this summer like winter is around every corner. Hey, this is Colorado, and maybe it is? A bucket list before bad weather, so to speak. There are plenty of choices for summer fun. Colorado Community Media has prepared a few ideas about where to go, and what to do for this weekend, and the next, and on down the line, until the snow flies. Let’s start at the top, of Pikes Peak, for example. There are several methods for getting yourself up the mountain and 14,114 feet on the altimeter — Cog railroad, a daylong hike up Barr Trail, and car ride up the Pikes Peak Highway, just to name a few. And the Peak country has more drawing power: with the world famous training opportunities by climbing the Incline (and now it’s legal), nearby Garden of the Gods, Cheyenne Canyon, United States Air Force Academy Visitor Center, Museum of Mining and Industry, gambling in Cripple Creek, vibrant mining history in Victor, and arts, entertainment, and shopping in the beautiful shadow of the Peak in Woodland Park, prehistoric treasures in Florissant and Fossil Beds National Monument. But then, of course, you might want to head north. In the same weekend, or the next, perhaps you would like to attend a concert in world-famous Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, hike the trails in Chatfield State Park, or visit Buffalo Bill’s Museum and Grave. No problem. Timing could be worked out so you could combine the above adventures with one (or more) of the many summer events scheduled here on the Front Range. Some of those include: › Western Welcome Week’s annual Festival Day, featuring a large parade drawing tens of thousands to downtown Littleton on Aug. 17. › Buffalo Bill days, an annual celebration of the Old West, from July 24-28. › Elizabeth Stampede, named the nation’s best small rodeo returning June-7-9. Are you ready to cowboy up? › 33rd Annual Symphony above the Clouds, Colorado Springs Symphony and special guests make this a one-ofa-kind special event for thousands every year on July 5. › Tri-Lakes Area Fourth of July Street Fair, Parade, and Fire Works as area communities combine to draw 40,000 to 50,000 visitors every year, celebrating the nation’s birthday. Arapahoe County Fair
This is the county’s signature summer event with something for everyone. Along with the usual lineup of barnyard favorites, fairgoers will enjoy concerts, carnival rides, a demolition derby, tractor pulls, a rodeo and the annual craft beer show. Bronc Day Adams County Fair
One of the largest fairs in the state with five days jam-packed with activities, the Adams County Fair features something fun for everyone in the family. In its 109th year, the fair will once again bring people from all over the state to compete in rodeos, a demolition derby and the hogs and dogs races. The fair will also feature a truck pull, 4-H exhibits, live entertainment, carnival rides and tons of delicious fair food vendors. When and where: July 31, Aug. 1-4, Adams County Regional Park near Brighton. More information: adamscountyfair.com
The first Green Mountain Falls Bronc Day was in July 1939 and marked the official opening of tourist season. It has since moved to the first Saturday in August. When and where: Aug. 3 and will include a pancake breakfast from 7-11 a.m. and arts and craft booths from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The parade, 10-11 a.m., will feature a Mounted Colorado Guard, fire engines, floats, classic cars, horses, the Bronc Day Princess, cowboys and clowns. After the parade, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. the family fun continues with a Gunfighters Show, a 26-foot high air slide, a Disney Bouncer, family games and a variety of races, including Rubber Ducky Races, kids relay races, boat races and more. The balloon classic takes place every Labor Day weekend, was started in 1977 and is the largest and longest running hot air balloon festival in the state of Colorado and the Rocky Mountain Region. This year’s theme is “Come Get Carried Away.” The event is free. When and where: Aug, 31 and Sept. 1 and 2. The balloon classic takes place at Memorial Park near downtown Colorado Springs with the balloons ascending in the air at sunrise on Saturday and Sunday and Monday Labor Day weekend. El Paso County Fair
The El Paso County Fair started in 1905 when people came together to celebrate a potato harvest at the schoolyard in Calhan. Now in its 108th year, the fair is still going strong. Still located in Calhan the fair has its own event complex. The theme for this year’s fair is “Country Pride County Wide.” When and where: July 20-27. Those who attend can expect traditional favorites such as 4-H animal shows and exhibits, petting zoo, arts and crafts, a carnival and plenty of food. Nightly entertainment will include auto races, truck and tractor pulls, the Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association Rodeo, Got Talent, Flying W Ranglers and Buckstein concert and a demolition derby. Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo
The rodeo is a Wrangler Million Dollar Tour Rodeo and is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. The rodeo draws 500 of the best from all over the country who compete in team roping, bull riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing and mutton bustin. There is also great food, pony rides, performing pigs, gold panning and mechanical bull rides. When and where: July 10-13 at the Norris Penrose Event Center. Dale Wasserman’s stage adaptation made its Broadway preview on November 12, 1963, its premiere on November 13, and ran until January 25, 1964 for a total of one preview and 82 performances. Since then, the play has had two revivals: first off-Broadway in 1971, with Danny DeVito as Martini, then as a Broadway production in 2001 with Gary Sinise as McMurphy for which it won a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. A film version released in 1975 was based on the novel, but not on the play.
