Posted July 2017--2018 Job Opening: Executive Director, SouthWest Improvement Council The SouthWest Improvement Council-SWIC was formed in 1987 by residents of southwest Denver and incorporated in 1988 as a nonprofit 501 c 3 organization. The MISSION of SouthWest Improvement Council-SWIC is improving conditions for neighborhoods and residents through civic engagement, volunteerism and the provision of essential health, housing and human services for people living with low incomes in challenging circumstances. SWIC’s GOAL is to advance human rights by tackling difficult community issues. SWIC operates the Westwood Community Center through a lease-purchase agreement with the City and County of Denver. Current SWIC programs include but are not limited monthly neighborhood councils, housing counseling, home foreclosure prevention, homebuyer education, youth sports, daily hot lunch for elders, weekly food bank, community garden, urban wildlife refuge, “First Nations” Native American and Hispanic Talking Circles, weekly domestic arts classes, weekly computer learning center with professional tutors, 19 units of affordable rental housing through SWIC’s development corporation SouthWest Neighborhood Housing and Rio de Esperanza, LLP and vacant lands retained for future development. SWIC is a HUD certified Local Housing Counseling Agency. Partners on our campus include Westwood branch of the Denver Public Library, Head Start and the Westwood Child Development Center. SWIC is seeking a dynamic leader who discerns individual and community assets and has a proven track record of leadership in nonprofit organizations. The ideal Executive Director will lead overall operations, develop staff and volunteer leadership, and ensure SWIC is providing high quality services with sound fiscal operations. Key Elements of This Position EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP • Fosters effective, high-performing management team • Provides leadership for agency-wide problem solving • Responsible for SWIC compliance with regulations and standards of accrediting or certifying organizations as may apply • Ensures SWIC programs are executed within requisite budgets, internal controls and outcome performance measures • Operates within SWIC policies and procedures to produce positive quantitative and qualitative outcomes • Leads supervisory and managerial oversight of professional staff and volunteers • Maintains SWIC facilities and Real Estate Owned (REO) in compliance with applicable standards and regulations • Program teams reporting directly to the Executive Director include but are not limited to Deputy Director, Accountant, Housing Counselors, Data Input Workers, Community Improvement Workers, Chief Financial Officer, Volunteer Team Leaders FUNDRAISING AND DEVELOPMENT • Actively solicits individuals, foundations and corporate donors for resources that support SWIC • Provides creative leadership developing and executing SWIC fundraising programs and events • Provides guidance in development of annual operating budgets for presentation to the Board of Directors • Prepares competitive responses to Requests for Proposals (RFP), Requests for Qualifications (RFQ) and Letters of Interest (LOI) • Negotiates on behalf of SWIC for health, housing and human services contracts COMMUNITY RELATIONS AND EXTERNAL AFFAIRS • Builds relationships with stakeholders including residents, clients, political subdivisions, grants program officers • Executes marketing and communications strategies to publicize and support SWIC services • Represents SWIC in public outreach activities GOVERNANCE • Provides strategic counsel for the SWIC Board of Directors regarding program development and diversification • Has current understanding of nonprofit trends in health, housing, human services, community development • Informs SWIC Board of Directors regularly regarding SWIC activities, internal affairs, program outcomes, and personnel management REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE • Minimum of four (4) year college degree • Experience working with active, involved Board of Directors • Demonstrated success in nonprofit financial resource development • Fiscal management skills, including program fund accounting • Understands the unique nature of nonprofit program operations and facility management • Demonstrated success interacting with funding program officers, community partners and other stakeholders DESIRED PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES • Commitment to serving people living with low incomes in challenging circumstances • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive relationships • Entrepreneurial, financially conscientious, business-minded and detail-oriented • Strong, encouraging and inspiring motivator of positive behavior • Seasoned leader with integrity and strong work ethic • Proactive problem solver • Comfortable working in an environment of economic, cultural, ethnic and geographic diversity • Willingly performs any additional tasks necessary to support SWIC activities • Bi-lingual preferred, but not required (English plus different culture including but not limited to Asian, Latino, Native American) COMPENSATION Starting Salary $65,000 subject to experience Yearly performance and salary reviews Health Insurance and 403b7 retirement plan.
