a lot of years. I have been working with their hides since we opened the shop in 1986,” he said. “I like to work with leather and make tack items like reins, bridles, cinches and other items. “I also love saddles. I repair them for customers and I also have a large collection of saddles, some dating back to the late 1800s as well as some that are fairly new. I guess the shop has become sort of a saddle museum.”

The grand opening of the Samuel Elbert Building at 440 Comanche St. in Kiowa, where some county offices are locating, brought together citizens, county employees and officials along with special guests from the Colorado state government. The former Bank of the West building, purchased in June for $495,800, unofficially opened to the public Oct. 10 on the main (upper) level, where the DMV office is located. During the Oct. 12 grand opening ceremony, Elbert County Commissioners Chris Richardson and Grant Thayer shared the front steps with three state officials: Secretary of State Wayne Williams, Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles Senior Director Mike Dixon and Operations Director for the Department of Revenue Tony Anderson. Also up front were Elbert County Clerk and Recorder Dallas Schroeder, Elbert County Treasurer Rick Pettitt and County Manager Sam Albrecht. After Richardson and Thayer jointly held a giant pair of scissors and cut the red ribbon spanning the steps to the entrance, Richardson gave the opening remarks to the crowd of nearly 50 attendees.

He said he learned to ride horses almost as soon as he could walk and worked cattle a good portion of his life. “I worked cattle on the hoof for

“Today isn’t just about acquiring shiny new stuff, it’s really about expanding and improving services to our citizens — establishing a one-stop shop for our most common citizen needs,” Richardson said. “For that reason, we’ve dedicated this service center in honor of Samuel Hitt Elbert. He was a territorial secretary, governor, congressman and Supreme Court justice who dedicated his life to civil service. “I can’t think of a better way to honor our county’s name sake than to put his name on this building.” “This is our future,” Thayer said next, and named some of the new people and positions that have been or will be added to the county staff, including a road and bridge director, public works director, Albrecht and County Attorney Bart Greer. “We’re reorganizing and planning for the future,” Thayer concluded. The secretary of state commended the county on its purchase of the building. “I’ve seen counties spend a lot more money for a lot less

The facility has the only drive-through DMV in the state, and will eventually have kiosks in the entry to enable citizens to renew their vehicle tags 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The main level of the building also holds the county’s elections, recording, treasurer and public trustee offices.

Within the next nine months, the assessor’s office is to move into the lower level. In a telephone interview the day before the grand opening, Commissioner Danny Willcox offered his thoughts about the new government facility. “I really believe it’s the most convenient thing that’s happened to this

Illegal use of drones while hunting can prove costly Penalties can run as high as $125,000 and forfeiture of device BY COLORADO PARKS AND WILDLIFE

Colorado Parks and Wildlife Law Enforcement and Public Safety Assistant Director Heather Dugan says CPW is seeing more cases of Colorado hunters illegally using drones. “The bottom line is, if it’s related to a hunt in any way, you can’t do it,”

Dugan said. “For scouting, locating, anything. If they fly before they take an animal, they’re illegal. If they use the drone to locate an animal they may have shot and wounded, they’re illegal.” Dugan stressed that the use of a drone for hunting is not only a violation of CPW Commission Regulations (see below), but also a violation of the Federal Airborne Hunting Act. Even for non-hunters, drone use on CPW land is restricted. It is not legal to take off or land a drone in any of CPW’s more than 350 state wildlife areas. Drone use in state parks is

limited to those parks with a designated area for model aircraft use. Even then, drone operators should be aware that it is illegal to harass wildlife. Dugan said, “The harassment definition is that it causes any change in the behavior of the wildlife. So if the animal runs, if it changes direction, if it stops eating, that’s harassment. Any change in the animal is considered harassment and it’s illegal.” Penalties for violating drone laws can range from $70 to as steep as $125,000. “If we can prove they used a drone to locate wildlife and then

killed it, it would be an illegal possession of that animal,” Dugan said. “That could be a fine of up to $125,000. It just depends on the circumstances and range of what they’re doing.” Additionally, if a drone operator is found to be in violation, their drones or related equipment could be subject to seizure. “In many cases, we seize the equipment to see what video they had to prove their behavior,” Dugan said. “If we proved it, we might elect to request that it’s forfeited as a public nuisance. They’re obviously using it for illegal activities and shouldn’t continue to possess it.”

As he talked he used a straight edge and knife to cut a blank for reins from the tanned leather he had stretched out on the counter. He said there are still a lot of people living in the area around Elizabeth who have horses, and they need a tack shop like Wildflower to repair saddles and gear and as a place to buy new tack items. “I think this is the only shop like this around the area that does repairs on saddles and tack,” he said. “I know big stores have new items for sale, but I don’t know of another shop close to here that does repairs like we do.” The 71-year-old was born on a ranch between Kiowa and Elizabeth and became a cowboy at a young age. “When I was a boy the family moved to ranch in the Montrose area,” he said. “I learned to ride and work cattle very young. I was about 12 when mom and dad broke up. I decided to go out on my own so I packed a few clothes, saddled my horse, took my dog and left home. I hired out to work cattle then and grew up that way.” He said he and his dad later reunited and worked together raising horses in the mountains. He graduated from Steamboat Springs High School and went to college for a year. “During that time I worked cattle and horses at area ranches and I also competed in area rodeos in bareback, saddle bronc and bull riding,” he said. “Things

Knowles makes most of the new items on display and he can restore or repair saddles for customers. TOM MUNDS changes for me in 1967 when I got that wonderful letter from Uncle Sam telling me I had been drafted into the Army.” He was trained in artillery target acquisition and was in Vietnam in 1986 and 1969. “My Army training prepared me to attend School of Mines so I could work as a surveyor,” he said. “I did that but I also helped out ranchers I knew when they needed an extra hand for a short time.” He was married in 1970 and in the 1980s he and his wife worked on a ranch near Kiowa. “We decided to needed to do some-

thing to make a living when we left ranching so we opened this shop in ‘86,” Knowles said. “My son Tad worked here with me for a while.” Tad Knowles said he learned about saddles and working leather from his dad. “I helped dad in the shop because I was too lazy to work and too scared to steal,” he said with a smile in his voice. “I learned how to repair tack and saddles from Dad. I also found I had a knack for creating custom saddles and it became my passion.” He said he eventually moved to Kiowa because there wasn’t enough

room in Elizabeth for his work. “I do custom work. I talk with the customer and I try to tool the leather to create the designs and appearance they want on the saddle,” he said. “I spend a lot of time on a project and it takes me about 200 hours to do an all the work on a special custom saddle.” His dad said he is proud of his son. “Tad is an artist,” Tom said. “His work is amazing.” The 71-year-old said he plans to continue to operate the shop as long as he can. “I enjoy working with leather and I like it that I can repair a favorite saddle for a customer,” he said. “But I don’t spend all my time in the shop. Working with saddles and tack you meet people who work cattle and, if they need a hand with roundup or branding, I pitch in and lend a hand because I am still pretty good at working cattle.”

This fall, rethink nature’s fertilizer Did you know that fall leaves and grass clippings contain phosphorus and nitrogen – the two common nutrients found in fertilizers? By properly reapplying these wastes to your lawn and garden, your yard can benefit from nature’s fertilizer while protecting local streams and ponds. This fall, try composting your leaves to reuse in next year’s garden or use a mulching mower to chop up grass and leaves on the lawn. Local stormwater agencies are teaming together to bring you this message. We take this so seriously that we posted this ad rather than send you more garbage in the mail. One thing is clear: our creeks, rivers and lakes depend on you.

You’re right, owner of an unleashed dog — you’re amazing, and we’re lucky to have you

I

have some very good news for some of you — and you know who you are. You are exempt from all of the QUIET dog leash laws and ordinances and regu- DESPERATION lations in Douglas County. And do you know why? Because you are special. You are special and cool and different than everyone else, and your dog is simply better than our dogs. Craig Marshall And don’t bother picking up after your Smith dog either. Someone else will do it for you, because you and your dog are special. I could write a novella about someone who ignores something as simple and important as leash laws. In a single

behavior, it tells me all I need to know and want to know — about someone. I met my first brother-in-law on a golf course. He cheated, and that told me all I needed to know about him. A man getting out of his car in the grocery store parking lot dumped his cigarette butts and ashes on the ground. All I needed to know about him. A passenger who get on planes with enough carry-ons for two, all I need to know. God, or someone or something, is in the details. That aphorism is credited to architect Mies van der Rohe, who also said, “Less is more.” Others have said, “More is more,” and “Less is a bore.” There are two sides to every story. Let me refer to a Peter Sellers film. “Does your dog bite?” “No.” The dog bites the man. “I thought you said your dog does not

Some tips on talking to your kids about marijuana

Y

oung people begin using marijuana for many reasons: curiosity, peer pressure and the desire to fit in with social environments. Those who have already begun to smoke cigarettes or use alcohol or both are at inEXTENSION creased risk of using marijuana as well. Also, people UPDATE who have untreated mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety or ADHD or have experienced trauma are at an increased risk of using marijuana or other drugs at an early age. According to the 2015 Healthy Kids Colorado Survey, underage youths with Sheila G. Kelley supportive parents, teachers, coaches and other adults are less likely to use marijuana. bite.” “That is not my dog.” The other side of this story is this: I am seeing an unleashed dog and I am seeing you, but it is not your dog. However, you call out a name and it comes running. Whenever I see an unleashed dog, I think of Woodstock, because it was cool, man, to walk around Max Yasgur’s dairy farm with a large, unleashed dog. It shows that you are an independent thinker, and the winds of life are at your back and in your favor. It shows that you, yourself, are an unleashed dog. It also shows that you are a jackass. I guess it’s cavalier. Some of us roll stop signs and follow too closely. Twenty items in a 10-items-or-less line. Leashing your dog might be seen as a sign of conformity. You know? Do as you’re told. Draw inside the lines. I learned how to draw because I didn’t have lines to draw inside of. I was given

blank books, and was told: “Draw.” But in real life, I draw inside the lines. And that’s why Smitty is on a leash. An unleashed dog is a recipe for consequences no one wants. Your dog bites or is bitten. Your dog runs away or is run over. As you all know, there are designated off-leash dog parks in Douglas County. For what it’s worth, if a dog confronts my dog, I will do whatever I have to do to assure the safety — and longevity — of my dog. Smitty thinks he is ferocious, but a larger dog could dismantle him quite easily. Sometimes dogs will just sniff each other, and sometimes they think they are Tyson and Spinks. None of that comes into play, if your dog is leashed. Craig Marshall Smith is an artist, educator and Highlands Ranch resident. He can be reached at craigmarshallsmith@ comcast.net.

Get off the fence when it comes to forgiveness

f you do not have anyone in your life that you need to or should forgive, or if you have no reason to be forgiven yourself, you may want to skip this column WINNING today. However, if WORDS you believe that there are one or more people who you would feel better about forgiving, and if there are any people that you believe could offer you forgiveness, then this column is for you Michael Norton and I invite you to keep reading. For me personally, I like to believe that I am very good at forgiving others, regardless of the hurt or misunderstanding. And as far as being forgiven by others, let’s just say that is a work in progress for now as I work on my own forgiveness fences. So what is a forgiveness fence? It is that barrier that we place between ourselves and those who have hurt us in some way, large or small. It’s that fence that we want

to stay behind until we receive a proper apology. It’s that wall that holds us hostage from forgiving others and freeing ourselves from the pain, the exhaustion of the battle, and inability to move forward. The forgiveness fence is also what separates others from forgiving us. It is an obstruction to allowing us to forgive ourselves. The forgiveness fence grows wider and higher with each day that passes where we cannot forgive ourselves and where others will not forgive us for whatever reason. The forgiveness fence is built by both parties so that we can live in the anguish of not forgiving or we can stand on the other side of the fence feeding a grudge that needs to go away. I am sure you have heard the saying when someone is torn between two options, they say something like, “I am on the fence about that.” Well, how many of us are riding the fence on forgiveness? We know we should give it, we are so close, we are right there, we are on top of the fence, all we need to do is get to the other side.

You may not agree with me on this next statement, however I believe that we make forgiveness harder than it has to be, don’t we? And the longer we withhold it, the longer we go on refusing to forgive others or ourselves, the wider and higher that fence grows. To make things easier, we don’t have to worry about scaling a wall or climbing a fence, all we have to do is “be” the door. Did you catch that? We don’t build a door or construct a gate, we are the door, we are the gateway to forgiveness. We own that step. Forgiveness is freedom. Forgiveness is freeing. Forgiveness costs us nothing — it is free. So how about you? Are you riding the fence of forgiveness or are you enjoying the freedom of forgiveness? I would really love to hear your forgiveness stories at gotonorton@gmail.com. And when we can be the gateway to forgiveness, it really will be a better than good week. The consumption of marijuana in any form — vaping, eating or smoking — isn’t allowed in public places; this law is only suited for usage on private property. Also, marijuana is not federally legalized, therefore usage and possession are prohibited on federal land such as national parks. Phone and Internet Discounts Available to CenturyLink Customers The Colorado Public Utilities Commission designated CenturyLink as an Eligible Telecommunications Carrier within its service area for universal service purposes. CenturyLink’s basic local service rates for residential voice lines are $21.00 per month and business services are $35.02 per month. Specific rates will be provided upon request. CenturyLink participates in a government benefit program (Lifeline) to make residential telephone or broadband service more affordable to eligible low-income individuals and families. Eligible customers are those that meet eligibility standards as defined by the FCC and state commissions. Residents who live on federally recognized Tribal Lands may qualify for additional Tribal benefits if they participate in certain additional federal eligibility programs. The Lifeline discount is available for only one telephone or broadband service per household, which can be on either wireline or wireless service. Broadband speeds must be 10 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload or faster to qualify. Lifeline discounts include a transfer restriction (port freeze). This means that you are unable to obtain the Lifeline discount on service with another provider for a period of time. The length of time depends on the services you purchase – 60 days for voice telephone service, 12 months for qualifying broadband service. Certain exceptions to the transfer restrictions may apply. See http://www.lifelinesupport.org/ls/change-mycompany.aspx for more information. A household is defined for the purposes of the Lifeline program as any individual or group of individuals who live together at the same address and share income and expenses. Lifeline service is not transferable, and only eligible consumers may enroll in the program. Consumers who willfully make false statements in order to obtain Lifeline telephone or broadband service can be punished by fine or imprisonment and can be barred from the program. If you live in a CenturyLink service area, please call 1-888-833-9522 or visit centurylink. com/lifeline with questions or to request an application for the Lifeline program.

Mazes offer SCARES, family fun Venues work to offer a challenge, atmosphere BY CLARKE READER CREADER@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

There are many features that make a good haunted house, but there’s one none can do without — atmosphere. That’s a tricky thing to create artificially, but few places have it in spades like a cornfield at night. “A good haunt is all about atmosphere, and outdoors at night just has that naturally,” said John Hopwood, the owner of Reapers Hollow, a 100 percent outdoor haunted experience in Parker’s Flat Acres Farm. “We want

people to get off their phones and video games and get outside.” Flat Acres, the Denver Botanic Gardens’ Chatfield Farms, and Thornton’s Maize in the City have all found ways to expand their seasonal offerings by opening their corn mazes during the day for families and children, and providing a more adult, haunted experience in the evenings. “With the growth of haunted houses all over the area, people are looking for a haunted attraction this time of year,” said Larry Vickerman, director of the Botanic Gardens at Chatfield. “A lot of people think we’re just a maze, but at night we get to try something different.” Activities during the day at the mazes vary from location to location,

and include everything from pumpkin patches to vendors, petting zoos and children’s mini mazes. “One of my favorite things about being here is showing kids our nineacre pumpkin patch,” Vickerman said. “A lot of them don’t know pumpkins are grown, so to see their faces at our pumpkin patch is a lot of fun.” When it comes to designing a maze that people enjoy, the best thing one can do is not make it too easy, explained Joe Palombo, co-owner of Maize in the City. “There are multiple ways to get through it, because people want the fun of a challenge,” he added. “We SEE MAZES, P14

Ai Weiwei Chinese artist Ai Weiwei’s monumental “Circle of Animals/ Zodiac Heads,” 12 large animal heads that are bronze symbols of the Chinese Zodiac, have been placed near the Sea Lion Fountain at the north end of Denver Civic Center. The internationally known collection will stay in Denver for a year, as part of its world tour, which began in 2010. Famous sculptor Ai Weiwei remains an activist, although he is not permitted to leave China. The sculptures were inspired by the fountain clock of the Yuanming Yuan, an 18th-century imperial retreat outside of Beijing, according to The New York Times. Each head is about four by three feet and stands 10 feet tall on its pillar, weighing nearly 1,000 pounds. Visit them at Broadway and Colfax Avenue.

Pumpkin Poles, etc. Littleton’s Main Street is decorated with Pumpkin Poles, created through teamwork among local businesses. A stroll to see them will reward one with a look at clever, well-designed projects. Choose a favorite. Also, Oct. 28 is the date for the annual Goblin Give Out, from noon to 5 p.m. Wear your Halloween costumes and visit participating businesses for a treat. It’s fun to watch some entire families in costume strolling Main Street on that Saturday. Speaking of dinosaurs … “Earth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live,” a collection of lifelike dinosaur puppets, will appear at 2 and 7 p.m. at the University of Denver’s Newman Center, 2344 E. Iliff Ave., on Nov. 11. Tickets start at $25, newmantix.com, 303-871-7720. Icing on the cake as we learn more and more about the dinosaur bones found in Thornton last summer (named “Tiny” by Thornton school kids). Families can watch as the pieces are being carefully cleaned up and prepared for exhibition at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, 2001 Colorado Blvd. And — with fortuitous timing — DMNS features the traveling exhibit, “Ultimate Dinosaurs,” with discoveries from around the world. Which is what the customers want, Palombo found, when they come to Haunted Field of Screams, Maize in the City’s haunted counterpart. “We have about 100 actors who work with us during the season,” he said. “Human interaction is a great way to have more real scares.” A good haunt actor needs to be high energy and maintain their characters, Hopwood explained. At Reapers Hollow, he lets his actors do a lot of ad-libbing and improvisation. All three haunts have multiple haunted attractions, included a haunted hayride at Chatfield, the Zombie Paintball Massacre at the Field of Screams, and the Dead End Motel in Parker. By giving visitors two options, both in the day and evening, these places provide a little something for everyone. “We have a lot of families in the day, and during the nights we get a lot of couples on date nights,” Hopwood said. The mazes also serve as a form of expression for their creators. “What we do is a great creative outlet for me,” Palombo said. “It’s fun to share

ADONIS PUENTES VIEW FROM ABOVE AND THE VOICE OF WITH TERRY VIRTS CUBA ORCHESTRA NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LIVE:

FRIDAY, OCT. 20, 2017 | 10 AM & 8 PM

FRIDAY, NOV. 3, 2017 | 8:00 PM

Astronaut Terry Virts installed the Cupola module on the International Space Station (ISS), granting an unprecedented 360-degree view from the station. When he later became the commander of the ISS, he made good use of the Cupola, taking more photographs than any astronaut who came before him.

Adonis Puentes’ rich, soulful voice is the perfect front for his all-acoustic orchestra, layering traditional Cuban rhythms with deep bass lines, jazzy horns, and his melodic guitar. A Grammynominated vocalist and composer from Cuba who weaves passionate, hypnotic Salsa and Cuban Son melodies through jazz arrangements, Puentes and the Orchestra create a worldly experience that is as emotive as it is danceable.
