rom a second-floor space above a dentist’s office to its own place on South Rollie Avenue, Fort Lupton’s Public and School Library has always striven to be a place for the community.

Now in its new home at 370 S. Rollie Ave., Library Director Thomas Samblanet said he’s seen an upsurge in use.

It’s shocking how much the community has responded positively, how many people have come into the building and how many new patrons have registered for library cards, Samblanet said. After

“All of our community rooms are in use almost all the time, our programming numbers are high, and everyone’s coming in to see them. It’s been wonderful to see the community response.”

It’s been years since the library has had its own space, instead of sharing an address with someone else.

THURSDAY AFTERNOON CLUB

The library got its start in 1921, a project of the Methodist Church’s Thursday Afternoon Club by church members and society ladies, according to library’s history.

Moving beyond a book sharing group among members, the library opened to the public on May 31 of that year, locating in the church’s basement.

A few months later, in September 1921, the library moved from the church to the waiting room of local dentist Dr. Wallace A. Lee on the second floor of the bank building.

According to archives from the Fort Lupton Museum, the library started with a small collection of 132 books – the 102 books donated by the church social group and another 30 books from the Colorado Traveling Library.

By the summer of 1922, the library had outgrown Dr. Lee’s waiting room and began looking for a bigger space and more

support. Eventually, the group worked out a deal, moving the collection to Fort Lupton Town Hall.

The group also relinquished its claim to the collection, giving those rights to Fort Lupton in exchange for gaining tax support from the community.

The new organization moved quickly, hiring “Mrs. Bartholamue” to manage the collection part-time, which she did until 1923, according to the library’s archive.

Next, the library hired Norma

Hardenburg, and she stayed on as librarian until 1947.

MOVING AGAIN

In the meantime, Fort Lupton

Architect John J. Huddart built a new Carnegie-style library in 1929 at 453 1st St. – where the Fort Lupton Museum sits today. It opened with 2,850 books.

The library began its long association with the Fort Lupton High School there. By 1930 the library had leased a portion of the main floor and basement to the school district and the entire building was open to the public and the high school, which

was located next door. That partnership allowed the library to expand its collection to 4,000 books.

Fort Lupton residents were eager to use the new library and FROM PAGE 5

In 1936, the library partnered with the Weld County Library for the first time. By 1961, it had joined the State Library Association and become a part of the Weld County Library system.

BACK TO SCHOOL

Fort Lupton built a new building for its high school in 1976, demolishing the old school.

In the lead-up to that new construction, city leaders decided to preserve the relationship with the school and created a new entity – the Fort Lupton Public and School Library. When the new Fort Lupton High School opened in 1976, it included space to combine

the library with the public school.

That was how the situation stayed for the next 46 years. Now a part of the High Plains Library District, board members lobbied City Councilors to give their library a new home.

They eventually agreed and voted to separate the two in 2022 – seeking to provide better

security to the school as well as room for the library to expand.

The old space in the high school became the school’s dedicated library, with Weld-Re-8 school district providing a teacher and librarian.

Crews began work on the new South Rollie Avenue location in 2022, building a 14,000-squarefoot library with a variety of services, collections, computers, quiet reading places, and areas for children and teens.

MODERN AND ROOM TO GROW

They wrapped up work a year later, and the Fort Lupton Public and School Library celebrated the new library’s opening with the Fort Lupton community on September 1, 2023, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Beyond books, magazines and rows of computers, it also features a maker space and a dedicated area for children and teens as well as a room for sewing machines, a cutter printer and laser engraver for wood, and a Cricut machine to create stickers and mug designs.

The staff will train you on the machines and plans on having sewing lessons, quilting, and adult craft nights with more programs in the works.
