Golden Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors The Chamber’s Board of Directors extends its greetings to our current and would-be members, as well as to the general public. The Golden Chamber of Commerce exists to serve its members so they can serve you better. We do this through a variety of events and services. These include ribbon cuttings, lunch & learns, Coffee Connections, hosting business after hours events, free spotlight booths at the Farmers Market, and more. Members also benefit by being active in our Ambassadors program and Golden Young Professionals. Some members choose to attend information meetings, including the Community Development Committee meeting on the first Wednesday of each month and the Downtown Merchants meeting on the third Tuesday. There’s also a South Golden

Merchants meeting on the first Tuesday. We also work hard week in and week out to serve Golden residents and out-of-town visitors with events which in turn improve the business climate of Golden. Our signature events are the Golden Fine Arts Festival every August, the Golden Farmers Market on Saturday mornings from June through the first week of October, the Taste of Golden every spring, The Chili Cook Off and Beer Tasting in the fall, and, of course, Olde Golden Christmas. Did you know that this is our 99th year? We are excited to be preparing for our centennial celebration next year! Then onward to our second century of service! 2019 Ambassador Committee Chair We would like to welcome Michael S. Denison, MBA, as our 2019 Ambassador Chair. Michael joined the Golden Chamber in 2016 as he was launching Aspen Grove Financial Strategies in Golden and was in the process of moving to Golden with his family. After joining the Golden Chamber, he quickly became an Ambassador and has been very active with the group since.

The Golden Young Professionals (GYP) is the premiere organization for young leaders seeking to be active professionally within the Greater Golden community. What is GYP?

To fulfill this mission, GYP organizes social events, educational speaker meetings, and volunteer opportunities to create and nurture a network of young professionals from all industries. These events provide a fun and informative atmosphere for members to build and foster relationships that support their professional growth. GYP places a strong emphasis on community engagement, recognizing the value of the personal and professional relationships formed and more economically vibrant environment created when pursuing community enhancement initiatives. Who are GYP members? GYP’s members are between the ages of 21 and 39 and include young professionals with diverse educational backgrounds and varied professional experience. GYP prides itself on being an inclusive organization and welcomes all young professionals with a desire to further their careers.

farmers market June 1 – October 5, 2019 (excluding July 27) Historic Downtown Golden

The Farmers Market supports the Chamber’s mission by “...putting forth efforts to enhance the quality of life for the community at large”. Founded in 2001, the Golden Farmers Market was designed by the Chamber as a means of bringing people to downtown Golden. The Market was originally held off Washington Avenue where the parking structure now resides. In 2006 the Chamber moved their Market to the parking lot next to the Golden Library where it has been presented for the past 11 years. The Golden Farmers Market is an assembly of vendors in an outdoor public market style, offering produce, food products, prepared cuisine, beverages, vendors, promotional opportunities, entertainment, and other related events as a means of supporting our members, community, city, and a healthy life style.

To address this issue, and to help

build food security in Golden, the Golden Farmers Market accepts SNAP benefits and Double Up Food Bucks. Double Up Food Bucks allows SNAP shoppers to bring home more fresh fruits and vegetables. When customers spend a $1 on any SNAP eligible item (meat, bread, eggs, milk, etc.), they receive $1 for Colorado grown, fresh fruits and vegetables. It is a $1: $1 match so if you spend $5, you get $5. If you spend $10, you get $10, up to $20 every week at our market. Community Showcase Booths The Chamber provides two free booth spaces, each Saturday, for Golden Chamber member businesses and nonprofit organizations to showcase their business. These Showcase booths are in direct support of the Chamber’s Mission, “…supporting our chamber members, collaborating with businesses, city, county, state and community resources…”. In 2017 our Golden Farmers Market became SNAP Certified. Many Coloradans rely on food assistance programs like SNAP, Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (formerly known as food stamps), which serves more than 485,000 Coloradans a month. However, most SNAP recipients receive $1.41 per meal or $4.23 per day in benefits, making it a challenge to have enough money to buy food for the whole month.

Since moving to the area in 2010, I committed myself to serve the community and have come to understand how engaged the community is and that Chamber membership is valuable to those who choose to engage. Historic Downtown Golden Golden Fine Arts Festival is a Trademark, signature event of the Golden Chamber of Commerce and we are so grateful that our Artists continue to support us, and the Golden community, through their participation. We, are proud to continue our 29-year tradition of bringing the finest artists to our community through the official Golden Fine Arts Festival.

Golden Fine Arts Festival Chair, Barbara Ludwig has served on the Golden Fine Arts Festival Committee for over 20 years and has been instrumental in its success.

This two-day Art Show takes place each year mid-August and the works of 134 artists from all over the United States are featured, including: ceramic arts, fiber arts, glass, jewelry, mixed media, painting, photography, sculpture, and 2D. This two-day Arts Festival also includes live music, food vendors, locally brewed beers, and featured wines.

The Festival is held each summer and staged along 11th Street between Arapahoe and Maple in beautiful historic downtown Golden. This location offers wonderful views of North and South Table Mountain, Lookout Mountain and Clear Creek. The high-quality artwork, comfortable atmosphere, and beautiful setting, makes our Golden Fine Arts Festival a sought out event which attracts over 35,000 people.

Jesse has participated in the Golden Fine Arts Festival for 7 years. Having won 1st place in Painting his first year, he has since been the featured artist and has been commissioned by the Chamber to design the 2017 and 2018 GFAF posters.

Jesse Crock is a Colorado-based artist with a love of climbing, cycling, and the outdoors. The rich color and sharp contrast of his acrylic paintings attempts to capture the vibrant Colorado landscape of the places he travels. As an outdoor enthusiast, he brings the viewer’s eye to places that are not often painted.

Historic Downtown Golden In partnership with Coors Distributing Company and MillerCoors, the Golden Chamber presents the annual Knock Your Boots Off Beer Tasting & Chili Cook-Off. This fun event takes place in October and features over 30 chili cooks and 90 craft beers. Chili cooks go all out to compete for the blue ribbon in the red, white, and green chili contests. Event participants will enjoy sampling the contestant’s chili’s and will vote for their favorites to receive the coveted People’s Choice Award for the best red, white, and green chili.

Proceeds Proceeds from this event benefits Golden Chamber of Commerce’s Community Projects and the charity of choice for MillerCoors, St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Golden Visitors and Information Center The Golden Visitors & Information Center plays a very important role in our community. a VITAL RESOURCE FOR VISITORS ❚ They greeted more than 60,000 visitors in 2018, up more than 5%. ❚ They exhibit and maintain inventory of over 200 brochures, maps and guides to attractions in Golden and the greater Golden area. a DYNAMIC RESOURCE FOR Businesses ❚ They distribute over 15,000 Golden Tickets in conjunction with the Visit Golden program, which links visitors to more than 90 participating businesses. ❚ They coordinate monthly volunteer excursions to local businesses, shops and restaurants to continually educate their volunteers about Golden. ❚ They also manage the “All Things Golden” Welcome Program, as well as mail out many information requests.

Historic Downtown Golden In 1922 Golden had its first public Christmas lighting display. Lights were not draped on all the trees, but only one tree, and it was a special one. It was Golden’s first community Christmas tree provided by the Golden Fire Department, Golden Kiwanis, and the Golden Chamber of Commerce. Photo by Christina Steadman

It was in 1972 that Golden Landmarks included Victorian Christmas elements which took place in and around the Astor House. Through the years Golden began to hang lights on the light posts, including garland and lanterns which lit up at night. In 1987 Golden began

lighting trees along Clear Creek and it was this year that Golden Victorian Christmas was folded in to the “Spirit of Christmas”, which then was called Olde Golden Christmas, a large celebration presented by the Golden Chamber of Commerce. Olde Golden Christmas has now evolved into an event involving not only the Golden Chamber of Commerce, but also the City of Golden, downtown merchants and restaurants, Visit Golden, the Golden Visitors and Information Center, the Golden Fire Department and many more. Events range from weekly Saturday Parades, to opportunities to meet Santa, to Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides, Hay Rides, dog-cart rides, and many other festivities. Golden’s Candlelight Walk, presented by the Golden Chamber, was founded in 1988. This annual processiona of candle holders along Washington Avenue has become a long-standing tradition for our community. The Candlelight Walk is a beautiful and truly unique event that brings the Golden community together to sing carols, “Light the Lights” of Golden with the Mayor, stroll along the lighted creek path, enjoy hot cider and roasted chestnuts, and see Santa. Golden’s Candlelight Walk marks the beginning of Olde Golden Christmas Parades and Holiday Activities.

In 1949 Santa Claus and his Reindeer first landed atop the Welcome Arch and have been a part of Golden’s holiday display ever since. They were designed by the arch’s designer, Paul Reeves, as a part of Golden’s “Spirit of Christmas” program presented by the Golden Chamber of Commerce, of which Reeves was chairman of the board. Santa and his Reindeer are officially recognized as a historic display for Golden. “Spirit of Christmas” featured a huge get-together downtown, turning Washington Avenue into Santa Claus Lane, and lighting it in a beautiful artistic manner befitting the occasion. Christmas carols were led by students and directed by Earle Johnson, and much more. It was a highly enjoyed community Christmas celebration.

Golden Landmarks Association (GLA) is honoured to have been Golden’s historic restoration and preservation organization for over forty five years. GLA was conceived in 1972 in response to the proposed demolition of the Astor House. GLA led a citizen response which ultimately resulted in a ballot issue which proposed it’s preservation. Since then, GLA has been instrumental in the preservation of the Burgess House, preservation and installation of the Guy Hill School and Pierce Cabin in the Golden History Park and, in partnership with others, helped develop Golden’s three Historic Districts.

City of Golden The City of Golden employs a unique partnership of economic development programs to benefit the entire community. In addition to working with the Golden Chamber of Commerce, the Jefferson County Economic Development Council, and other municipalities, Golden’s Department of Community and Economic Development coordinates several programs to fulfill our Golden Vision 2030 goals and community values (see www.cityofgolden.net for details on Golden Vision and the following): ❚ Economic Development staff assist companies seeking to expand or locate in Golden with site selection information, entitlements, and building and zoning processes. ❚ The Golden Economic Development Commission (EDComm) encourages growth in the primary employment sector as well as in the small business/start-up sectors. In addition, EDComm supports education and workforce development programs. ❚ The Golden Urban Renewal Authority (GURA) focuses on three eligible areas in the City – West Colfax, the Central Neighborhoods, and 8th Street – where redevelopment assistance is needed.

GLA continues to work on historic preservation in Golden, the Brick Yard House and Pullman Cabin, as well as curating Golden’s photographic collections. They participate in Buffalo Bill Days, Golden Fine Arts Festival, and host the Golden Holiday House Tour. GLA’s photographic collections are available for viewing, year-round, at the Golden Public Library and Higher Grounds Coffee Shop.

❚ The Golden Downtown Development Authority concentrates on downtown redevelopment and supports downtown businesses through a variety of business assistance and infrastructure programs. ❚ Visit Golden, our merchant-based community marketing program, tells the Golden story to local residents, visitors, and the media, substantially increasing visitation and traffic to events, cultural attractions, and individual retailers.

Standing the Test of Time By Nola Krajewski, Member Relations Manager, Golden Chamber of Commerce | Interviews by RaQwin Young and Nola Krajewski It has been said that “the only thing constant is change”, quote from Heraclitus of Ephesus, 500 B.C. Even thousands of years ago, humans contemplated progress, growth and change in our communities. As the Golden Chamber of Commerce enters its 99th year of business and prepares to enter a new century of service, we can’t help but reflect back on the changes that our Golden community has seen throughout the last 99 years. And while the changes have been many, we also see that some of the cornerstone businesses that make Golden the community that it is today, have endured a changing and growing society to continue to be successful. One of the most successful businessmen of all time, Walt Disney, understood the importance of change. He stated, “Times and conditions change so rapidly that we must keep our aim constantly focused on the future.” In that same light, Harry S. Truman proclaimed, “Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still.

Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.” In honor of all that Golden has been in the past 99 years, and all that is yet to be, we want to recognize our Chamber members that have stood the test of time and change. These businesses have been the “courageous, skillful leaders” of Golden and have kept their “aim constantly focused on the future”, serving our community throughout the decades.

MillerCoors 99th Membership Anniversary in 2019 As the Golden Chamber of Commerce approaches a century of service, we also celebrate nearly a century of partnership with MillerCoors. In April of 1920 a group of local business leaders met to form a local chamber of commerce. The president of this new Golden Chamber of Commerce was Herman Coors, Manager of Coors

Porcelain. Since the time that Herman Coors was president of the Golden Chamber, Coors/MillerCoors has led the Golden Chamber in the role of president of the Board of Directors five different times (1944-1946, 1978, 1988, 1992, 2013). MillerCoors is not only our longest standing member, but they provide immeasurable support to our business community through their membership, sponsorship, and partnership with the Golden Chamber of Commerce. They are an integral part of our Chamber history as well as the history of Golden.

For those considering membership, being a member can bring credibility to your business. According to The Shapiro Group, Inc. and Market Street Services, when consumers know that a small business is a member of their local chamber of commerce, they are 44 percent more likely to think favorably of it and 63 percent more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future. Why has RTD felt it is important to be a part of the Golden Chamber of Commerce for so many years?

Being a member is another way for RTD to be involved in and support the community. Being a part of the chamber has allowed RTD to forge relationships and partnerships in Golden and support local businesses.

The community is extremely important to RTD. If not for the support of the community and our patrons, there would be no RTD. RTD is vital to any community as it adds connectivity, provides a safe and reliable way to get to destinations, allows users to save money when going to downtown Denver events, and can grant riders an opportunity to be more productive when they are riding our services. RTD is also good for the local economy. RTD’s investment in Golden with the W Line has meant more connections, jobs, investment and dollars spent in the local economy.
