There truly is no place quite like Golden. From our beautiful natural surroundings, to our unique shops and restaurants; from our historical roots and cherished western heritage, to our innovation and entrepreneurial spirit; from our hometown pride to our famous arch on Washington. No place can compare to Golden! In 2023, the Golden Chamber of Commerce released our new brand and with it, our new manifesto, found on page 6. Our new manifesto is not just about what we do as an organization, but it is a call to action for our community. Whether you are a Chamber member, a community volunteer, a business owner, a long-time resident, or someone new to the area, we hope that the pages of this magazine help you find your place in Golden.

“How

have you found your place under the arch?”

“I have found my place under the arch through my role at the Golden Chamber of Commerce. I feel honored to support the community that I call home by providing resources to the businesses that give Golden its unique charm, history, and sense of community. It is a wonderful place to live and work and I consider myself lucky that I get to do both here in Golden.”

“I literally own businesses that are located under the arch! Being involved and giving back to the community is what I like to think as my place under the arch.”

Get involved by volunteering!

Golden has a long history of communitycentered events that bring people together. Community events happen because of the hard work and dedication of volunteers. Each year the Golden Chamber of Commerce needs hundreds of helping hands to make our events safe, successful and fun. Volunteering is a way to be a part of a local event and give back at the same time. We want our local residents and businesses to feel connected to the events we provide and the best way to do so is to be a part of them! Please consider giving some of your time to a local community event. Howdy Folks!

GOLDEN’S WELCOME ARCH GOLD ’S W ME

The year was 1949. The war was over, and the national mood was optimistic. Golden’s population was exploding and its downtown businesses were thriving. After the wartime shortages of cars, gasoline, and tires, automobile sales were booming. Americans were on the move, eager to hit the road and explore the country.

Golden’s business leaders were determined to attract their share of the growing tourism market. Lu Holland, President of the Chamber of Commerce and owner of the Holland House Hotel, decided that a big WELCOME arch over the main street was just what Golden needed to capture tourists’ attention.

The Welcome Arch was officially unveiled on March 24, 1949. The letters were originally outlined in neon, and the community gathered on Washington Avenue to watch it be illuminiated for the first time. The big event was preceded by a parade. The School of Mines Band, the Buffalo Bill Saddle Club, the Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, Cub Scouts, Golden Grange, and other groups marched down Washington Avenue, starting

at 16th Street marching down to the business district.

The Governor was in town to help us celebrate. He flipped the switch at 8PM, and the lights came on. Radio station KMYR was on hand to broadcast the event, with Gene Amole acting as master of ceremonies. The Colorado Transcript estimated a crowd of 6000 people.

Popular as the sign was, it was a favorite target for rock-throwing kids. That’s probably why the Transcript editor, writing in 1975, remembered the arch as often saying “WELCOME TO OLDEN” and “How Folks!” Subsequent redesigns of the arch eliminated the neon lettering.

Santa Claus and his reindeer made his debut on the arch during its very first Christmas season. The Chamber of Commerce contacted that same sheet metal worker who had built the sign and asked them to add a holiday flourish. Santa and his reindeer have appeared over the arch every December since 1949.

The Welcome Arch has been refurbished several times in its 75+ year history, and minor variations were

often introduced. A 1970s rendition of the sign added a postcard-like painting of a gold panner. The painting was not generally popular, and the clock seldom worked.

The most controversial alteration was made in 1979. At that time, a committee was charged with updating the arch. Upon considering the tag line, WHERE THE WEST REMAINS, the group decided that the word “REMAINS” made Golden sound like a corpse. They instructed the sign painter to change the word to “LIVES.” Golden-ites had grown used to the wording they had seen for thirty years and were outraged at the change.

The sign committee stuck to their guns, and WHERE THE WEST LIVES has remained on the sign, but even now when the wording is mentioned to a group of Golden old-timers, they likely grumble: “It’s SUPPOSED to say, WHERE THE WEST REMAINS!”

The sign has more than fulfilled its original mission. Tourists flock to have their photos taken with the arch in the background. Locals, too, value the sign. Every event planner wants their parade/race/party to take place under the Welcome Arch. That’s how people looking at the pictures will know that it took place in GOLDEN –WHERE THE WEST LIVES.

Our goal is to be a Champion, a Catalyst, and a Convener for business in Golden. Our business advocacy work can be seen on local, county-wide, and statewide levels.

LOCAL: BEING A VOICE FOR BUSINESS

The Golden Chamber is focused on the economic and civic interests of the community and serving as a connection between city management, city council, and the business community. We do that by writing letters of support or speaking to City Council on behalf of an issue that affects multiple businesses and by participating in local Golden initiatives, to provide a unique perspective on how local decisions can impact the business community.

COUNTY WIDE: JEFFERSON COUNTY BUSINESS LOBBY (JCBL)

JCBL serves as the unified voice of more than 25,000 JeffCo businesses advocating for public policies that will strengthen the business climate in the City of Golden and beyond. The Golden Chamber serves as one of the representatives that advocates for businesses in Jefferson County with government and stays informed of state legislation impacting businesses in our community.

STATEWIDE: COLORADO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE & COLORADO COMPETITIVE COUNCIL (C3)
