ART GALLERIES

MAINSTAYS, NEWCOMERS OFFER COLOR, CREATIVITY

MEDIA

Art lovers in Golden need not look far to find fine art, as there are several galleries within Golden that offer a wide range of artistic experiences. From student-created art to Western art to even motorcycle art, Golden’s galleries have it all.

SPIRITS IN THE WIND GALLERY

1211 Washington Ave., Golden, CO 80401 | 303-279-1192

https://spiritsinthewindgallery.com

Open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday

Spirits in the Wind Gallery has been a mainstay of Downtown Golden for 28 years. The gallery focuses on curating Western art, with influences from Colorado’s history. „9

“There’s a lot of aspen trees, Colorado wildlife, Colorado nature scenes,” said employee Mayzee Collins. “It’s hard to find a gallery that curates that type of thing. So we’re really kind of one of the only ones in Colorado.”

The gallery primarily highlights Colorado’s local artists — with some artists even closer to home, hailing from Golden itself.

“We’ve stayed loyal to a lot of artists that have been in the gallery for years, but we are always getting new artists,” Collins added. “New art from existing artists, but also new artists entirely. We’re always changing what kind of pieces are in here.”

The gallery also features art pieces across a wide variety of price points—carrying everything from original artworks to prints — making art affordable for a variety of budgets.

“(The gallery) is quiet,” said owner Gina Armstrong. “It’s not like Safeway. It’s just a wonderful place to be, sit and look at the art. I get to look at it all day and I love it.”

FOOTHILLS ART CENTER

809 15th St., Golden, CO 80401 | (303) 279-3922 | https://foothillsartcenter.org

Temporarily Closed

Since 1968, the Foothills Art Center has been a hub for art in Golden. Originally known as the Michonia Watercolor Society, the center has expanded throughout its life to offer a variety of classes and programming alongside its art exhibitions.

The center has featured a wide variety of art exhibitions in the past, with a broad range of subjects. Some past exhibitions include annual members' shows, showcases of art by students at Jeffco Public Schools and Red Rocks Community College, holiday markets and exhibitions featuring individual artists — such as Brookie Shaden.

The Foothills Art Center is currently closed as construction is underway at its new Astor House Campus — which is slated to open later this year. During its closure, the center continues to run programming and classes both online and in-person. „10

UHL STUDIOS GALLERY

15801 West Colfax Ave., Golden, Colorado | 303-993-3322 |

https://www.uhlstudios.com

Open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday

Just off Colfax, the Uhl Gallery focuses on art depicting one thing: motorcycles. The gallery features the work of David Uhl, a fine art painter with family roots in engineering and art.

Uhl is Harley-Davidson’s first licensed oil painter, starting in 1993 he has created many pieces of art for Harley-Davidson apparel. His painting often highlights the motorcycles themselves, as well as the history of the manufacturing company.

Uhl’s gallery features a variety of fine art pieces, with fine art available for purchase, as well as art books, prints and clothing.

BROWN HALL ART GALLERY

1610 Illinois St., Golden, CO 80401

https://www.mines.edu/thebhag/

Open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Daily

The most recent addition to Golden’s art scene, Brown Hall Art Gallery features art from students, faculty and staff from Colorado School of Mines. The gallery was opened in 2022 as a way to showcase student talent outside of their academic career.

“There’s more to Mines students than their GPA and grades,” said Neal Sullivan, a mechanical engineering professor who helped found the gallery.

The gallery bridges gaps across departments, working with the school’s arts journal High Grade to choose pieces to display. Pieces are selected from the submissions to High Grade, then displayed at Brown Hall. Having run one show, the gallery has featured only student work so far.„11

“It’s tough to evaluate the impact, but students seem to like the gallery,” Sullivan added, noting that in a survey of student’s favorite places to be on campus, the gallery ranked first. “They’re there all the time.”

The gallery is open to the public throughout the week, so anyone is free to stop by and see the display of student work.

CLEAR CREEK

GOLDEN IMPROVING CLEAR CREEK CORRIDOR FOR SUMMER’S TUBING SEASON

The City of Golden is gearing up for another busy summer, with tens of thousands of people flocking to Clear Creek to tube, kayak, swim and picnic.

Historically, the run-off season — when the creek’s water levels are at their highest and fastest — starts in late May or early June and lasts for a few weeks. This is the ideal time for experienced kayakers to enjoy Clear Creek Whitewater Park’s features, with some groups hosting special events like kayak rodeos.

Meanwhile, tubers and other users must wait until the run-off season ends to enjoy the creek. Historically, the tubing season starts in the latter half of June and drops off after Labor Day weekend, although conditions vary each year.

For summer 2024, the city is completing several improvements to the Clear Creek corridor to lessen congestion and reduce conflicts between user groups. „13

Tubers relax in the middle of Clear Creek Aug. 30. The City of Golden is working on creek management strategies for 2024, including reducing the number of creek access points and reconfiguring Clear Creek Whitewater Park’s beach area.

File photos by Corinne Westeman

One of the biggest changes will be the updated Clear Creek Whitewater Park’s beach area, as the city has planned to remove the sand and reconfigure the area with colored steps, climbing boulders and an ADA-accessible concrete pad.

Other major changes include widening the north Clear Creek trail near the RV park, permanently closing some creek access points for revegetation, and gating others during peak visitation periods.

Golden also plans to increase staff presence along the corridor and create a more formalized check-in process to educate tubers on creek safety.

Golden also plans to expand its data collection initiative to count the number of tubers, the most popular put-in and take-out spots along the creek, and the highest-volume days and timeframes. Last year, the city used RFID-enabled stickers, but found there were problems with them sticking to the tubes.

This year, Golden planned to use either wristbands or luggage tags for people who bring their own tubes. Rental tubes at local outfitter shops will likely have RFID-enabled devices already inside.

Long-term, Golden is considering a reservation system for summer 2025, but the City Council hasn’t decided on that topic yet.

Those visiting Clear Creek this summer should respect all park rules and fellow users, and ensure water conditions are safe for the intended use. Helmets and life jackets are recommended.

AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF GOLDEN

Golden was established during the 1859 Gold Rush. Prospectors from the East headed into the mountains, hoping to locate gold. Many of Golden’s founders had participated in the 1849 California Gold Rush and had learned that the surest way to get rich was to “mine the miners” by selling them food and supplies. Golden’s location at the foot of the mountains made it an ideal place to rest and resupply before making the final, arduous trek. One of the founders was named “Tom Golden,” and his name was chosen for the new settlement. „17

GOLDEN GUIDE PAGE 16
One of two funicular railways that delighted tourists in the second decade of the 20th century. The other took people to Castle Rock on South Table Mountain.

Many towns were established during that brief and intense Gold Rush period, and many quickly faded — first to ghost towns and later to dust. Golden had a precious commodity that gave it staying power — water. This was necessary for both drinking and agriculture. The rainfall in this region is not sufficient to grow most crops, but with irrigation water, almost anything will grow here. Farmers and business investors immediately began to dig ditches, to route Clear Creek water into the surrounding hinterlands. A thriving agricultural community formed, with Golden as its commercial hub. „18

GOLDEN GUIDE PAGE 17

The next big boost in Golden’s economic vitality was the 1870 arrival of the Colorado Central Railroad. This line connected the mountain mining towns —including Central City, Idaho Springs and Georgetown — to Denver.

This new ability to transport people and freight allowed Golden to become an industrial hub. By the late 19th century, Golden had smelters, coal and clay mines, brick and tile manufacturers, and one extremely promising brewer.

Adolph Coors arrived in Golden in 1873. He found pure, abundant spring water in the Clear Creek valley and recognized the site as the perfect place to build a brewery. Coors’ attention to not only production but distribution allowed the company to thrive, and it soon became one of Golden’s biggest employers. Today, it is the largest single-site brewery in the world!„19

The Colorado School of Mines was established in 1874. Its original focus on mining soon expanded to include oil exploration and engineering. The school now partners with the nearby National Renewable Energy Laboratory to develop emerging energy sources. Golden’s beautiful scenery has always drawn tourists. Early visitors rented burros to carry them to the top of South Table Mountain. In 1912 and 1913, competing funicular railways brought eager sightseers to Castle Rock and Lookout Mountain. „21 Coors Brewery, circa 1920

GOLDEN GUIDE PAGE 20

The funiculars soon lost popularity when the Lariat Loop Trail was built in 1913, and the mountains were opened to automobile travel. Today, Golden’s extensive trail system and surrounding Open Space make it a haven for hikers and bikers.

Clear Creek remains the historic heart of the Golden community. It continues to provide topnotch drinking water and has become a popular recreation spot with its kayak course and miles of paved trails.

GAME SHOP

GOLDEN GAME GUILD FOSTERS THRIVING COMMUNITY

Game stores are more than just a center for play or a place to buy games. They serve as social hubs, something shop owners say is increasingly hard to find and ever more valued in today’s society.

While church attendance continues to plummet, politics becomes ever more divisive, and tech devices are a growing part of our daily lives, the human need for physical connection remains. Sitting across a table from others and playing games, while temporarily setting aside worries that today often range from personal to global, is one way to fill that void. „27

GOLDEN GUIDE PAGE 26

Whatever the reason, board gaming is hot. In fact, the Washington Post recently described it as the golden age of board games, and there are no signs of its slowing. The global board games market is expected to double in the next several years, growing from about $13 billion in 2023 to $26 billion by 2030.

Board games promote sportsmanship, family, teamwork and competitiveness, and studies show they increase self-confidence. For kids who today spend hours each day interacting with technology, playing board games gives them time away from the screen, directly interacting with others.

“I think the value of in-person communication and collaboration is very important,” said Gabby Mann, who co-owns the Golden Game Guild with her husband Ryun Valdez.

“Hopefully that doesn’t get lost in this wild world we live in now. I’m glad we have opportunities for that here, especially for kids.”

“Our society is losing places to meet in person,” Valdez said. “There needs to be places besides just bars, especially for families, where people can go.”

Having a sense of community is also key to a successful game store’s business model.

Much of the industry’s growth is fueled by Gen Z. About 40% of game board players were born between 1997 and 2012, and forecasts suggest they’ll continue to be the industry’s most significant consumers. But it’s kids who dominate the industry. Players aged 5 to 12 are the global market’s biggest consumers.

To meet all that demand, the industry produces more than 3,000 new games each year. And for those who haven’t played in a while, they’ve come a long way from Battleship and Aggravation. On today’s board game menu, there is literally something for everyone. „29

“People will come in and say, ‘I don’t like games,’” Mann said. “And we say, ‘You haven’t played the right game yet.’”

Consider games like Wingspan, a card-based game about birds. Using hand-painted cards, players control a piece of land, on which they’re tasked with populating a bird preserve. Many describe playing Wingspan as a soothing, Zen-like experience. It’s clearly struck a chord. Since its 2019 release, Wingspan has sold 1.7 million copies and won numerous awards.

Or Pandemic, a game in which players are disease-fighting specialists battling the spread of several global plagues. Each player has a unique role, and must strategize, racing the clock with their fellow players to conquer the diseases. This highly rated, award-winning game is not simple, but players love it for both its complexity and emphasis on teamwork.

The tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, once a niche and secretive pastime played in basements and private rooms, is a featured act at almost any modern game shop. Almost all set aside one night for D&D, which often draws strangers together to craft their own fictional characters, worlds, and adventures. Created in the 1970s, the game is today at an all-time popularity peak.

Fans also flock to game shops to play “Magic: The Gathering,” the oldest known trading card game. It casts players as wizards who get their powers from a universe of cards that are bought, sold and traded.

And among the younger set, Pokémon trading cards remain a strong seller.

House Manager Tim Fishbaugh prepares the bar and lounge area Dec. 12 at the Miners Alley Performing Arts Center. The new center, which is in the former Meyer Hardware building along Arapahoe Street, features a 160-seat theater, a spacious foyer and bar area, and state-of-the-art amenities for artists and crewmembers.

MINERS ALLEY

PERFORMERS READY TO ‘ROCK OUT’ IN FORMER HARDWARE STORE

Thanks to a team of dedicated visionaries, at least two years of hard work and more than $4 million, Golden’s former Meyer Hardware store is now a state-of-the-performing-arts center.

The Miners Alley Performing Arts Center is hosting its inaugural season in a new 160-seat theater, with plenty of room to grow inside the 30,000-square-foot building.

This summer, MAPAC is hosting performances of cult classics “School of Rock” and “The Full Monty.” „31

GOLDEN GUIDE PAGE 30

“The Full Monty” — based on the rated-R film of the same name — runs April 26-June 2. The musical depicts a group of unemployed Buffalo steelworkers who develop “a bold, unclothed idea” to make some cash, complete with razor-sharp humor, toe-tapping music and a “revealing” final number.

Then, in July, MAPAC is bringing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music to Golden with “School of Rock,” based on the PG-13 movie of the same name.

The musical follows failed rock star Dewey Finn who poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. Watch Dewey turn these straight-A students into guitar-shredding, bass-slapping musicians, as MAPAC’s young performers rock out live every night.

The show runs July 26-Sept. 15.

Earlier this year, the Miners Alley artists and staff bid adieu to their former 110-seat playhouse at 1224 Washington Ave. and fully moved into the former Meyer Hardware building.

While there were some growing pains with the new space, Producing Artistic Director Len Matheo described in February how the organization’s increased attendance and sales prove the “Field of Dreams” mantra is true: “If you build it, they will come.”

Matheo and Executive Director Lisa DeCaro — a husband-and-wife team steeped in the performing arts — have said how the playhouse became “a community hub with a family feel” over the last 10 years. Now, the new performing arts center has the same atmosphere, but on a larger scale.

“It’s the same feeling, but more of it,” DeCaro said.

And this is only the beginning.

The current 15,000-square-foot MAPAC only fills half the 30,000-square-foot building. Longterm plans include expanding the current 160-seat theater to a 300-seat theater-in-the-round setup, adding a black box theater, establishing an education center with classrooms, and adding a few artist housing units.

“I can’t wait to start building Phase II, so we have multiple spaces for community use,” Matheo added.
