Since its inception, the city of Golden has offered majestic scenery, an abundance of friendly people, and an array of diverse attractions. With several family-friendly museums in the surrounding area, visitors can choose to don their cowboy hat and boots while checking out the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave, or choose to take a train ride back in time at the Colorado Railroad Museum. CHILDREN’S THEATRE
COMES TO MINERS ALLEY
By Amy Woodward Miners Alley Playhouse is more than Golden’s local community theatre.
It is one of Colorado’s noteworthy playhouses that has earned the attention of entertainment critics from both Westword and the Denver Post.
Last season, the playhouse introduced its first musical, The Fantasticks, one of Broadway’s longest running productions of all time.
CULTURAL ATTRACTIONS
This year, Miners Alley is helping to revive the frivolity of Heritage Square’s celebrated Children’s Theatre with the addition of fun and exciting children’s shows at the alley. The Famed Rory Pierce, who performed at the former Heritage Square Music Hall for almost 25 years, leads the play. He brings his adored performance skill and expertise — along with a handful of actors from the music hall.
“I love children’s theatre,” Pierce said, who started the children’s program at the square. “There’s just something really cool about doing shows for kids.” Directors Len Matheo and Lisa DeCaro of Miners Alley have wanted to add a children’s theatre to its Saturday afternoon performances.
“Part of our mission here is to be a community hub of the performing arts in Golden,” Len Matheo said. Pierce’s fan following and knowledge of children’s plays made him an ideal choice to help
get the children’s theatre running, he said. The hallmark of the alley’s children’s theatre is to include the young audience members in the play.
Reminiscing on his days at the music hall, Pierce said he discovered then that

kids can help move the story along. And he was right. The debut of the Brothers Grimm’s fairytale classic Rumpelstiltskin on Saturday, Feb. 14 resulted in a roar of laughs and giggles as kids were called on stage to help turn straw into gold. “They get to experience the books on a stage and get to see the story come alive,” said Jennifer Stickel of Golden. “It’s fun.” Longtime fans of the actors from the music hall were also present to watch their beloved performers once again. “We’re here to see the Heritage Square performers from the Heritage Square Music Hall because we love them and we’ve missed them,” said Myrna Wazny of Castle Rock. “We’re kids at heart even though we’re senior citizens.” Rumpelstiltskin will run until March 7 with a four week hiatus. For upcoming children's shows, visit www.minersalley. com for details.

Guanella Pass Scenic Byway www.clearcreekcounty.org/scenic-drives
Take I-70 to Exit 228 in Georgetown and follow the signs through Historic Georgetown to the Scenic Byway. 23 miles long, Guanella Pass Scenic Byway follows the original wagon route that linked the mining towns of Georgetown, Colorado and Grant, Colorado on US Highway 285.
Along the way you will experience clear mountain lakes, water falls, incredible flora and fauna, animals, and trail heads. The byway is a spectacular drive in the fall, as the aspens put on their autumn best and shower the byway with leaves of gold. The byway is paved from Georgetown to just past the Summit, but not all the way to US Highway 285. Guanella Pass typically opens Memorial Day Weekend and remains open through late November/early December - Weather Permitting.
Hogback Geological Exhibit
Located off I-70 near the US Highway 40 exit The exhibit is a fascinating place for those interested in geology. This geological cross-section site has an intriguing walk along the rock face. Highway construction has exposed layers of earth. With the help of plaques that explain the formation of the cliffs along the Eastern Slope, visitors will get a glimpse into the geological makeup of the area.

Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway www.lariatloop.org
The Lariat Loop® Byway is a 40-mile route where you can retrace the motoring adventures of the early 1920s and experience the thrill of foothills exploration at the dawn of the Age of Motorcars. Colorado’s first gateways to the mountains still have sharp curves, winding roads, spectacular views, and waysides to refresh and delight the traveler. This byway is a combination of two historic routes: the Lariat Trail Scenic Mountain Drive ascending Lookout Mountain and the Bear Creek Canyon Scenic Mountain Drive. In combination, these routes were part of several of the “scenic circles” developed and promoted by Denver in 1915-1920s to help Coloradans experience the mountains in proximity to the Denver Metropolitan area. These roadways were designated to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The Lariat Loop® Byway provided early automobile access to the Denver Mountain Parks system and, later, to Jefferson Co. Open Space parks. Today, the Lariat Loop® Scenic & Historic Byway continues to serve this purpose, carrying visitors along the same routes as in the early days

Golden City Brewery 920 12th Street, Golden 303-279-8092 | www.gcbrewery.com
Golden City Brewery was founded in 1993 by two Geologists, Charlie and Janine Sturdavant. The brewery is housed in an old machine shop in the backyard of their 12th Street Historic District home. Known for one of the first and best beer gardens in Colorado, the brewery has always drawn from its close neighbor, the Colorado School of Mines. In the old days, students would come for the free pretzels with a beer. Now the brewery offers a limited menu in
addition to the pretzels and free Happy Hour nachos. Charlie's favorite beer styles were those from Germany and, as Coors also found more than 100 years ago, Clear Creek water is perfect for making them. The Legendary Red has always been popular and is representative of a German Atlbier. More recently, the Evolution IPA has challenged the Red in popularity. As the name implies, the IPA is always changing, depending on the availability of hop strains and the evolving taste of the customers. Golden City has a full bar license and offers drink specials on occasion, along with wine, cider and homemade root beer. Cider is manufactured at a sister operation, the Golden City Winery.

For lunch how about Golden’s best cheeseburger with hand cut fries or a fresh salad? Or for something unique, check our board for daily specials. Come in today and experience why The Golden Diner is the local’s choice for breakfast and lunch! We were "voted" "best of Jeffco" for five years In a row: 2010, 2011, 2012, 2012 and 2014 for our delicious breakfast.

As an outdoor enthusiast, he brings the viewer’s eye to places that are not often painted. His work has been commissioned for the Ouray Ice Climbing Festival, the FIBArk Kayaking Festival in Salida, and for craft beer labels for the Eddyline Brewery in Buena Vista. He was chosen as the 2012 Golden Fine Arts Featured Artist and has created the Golden Christmas ornament the past two years.
