GRANT SOUGHT TO COMPLETE TRAIN RESTORATION PROJECT Amy Woodward The Colorado Railroad Museum has acquired a valuable large narrow gauge steam engine known as Locomotive 491. This one of kind steam engine was the only large narrow gauge steam engine built by Colorado’s famed Denver & Rio Grande West Railroad. It is so valuable that on January 17, 2014, Locomotive No. 491 was placed on the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties, a recognition that the locomotive which spent 34 years chug-
ging along the “ribbon of iron” around the Rio Grande route is worthy of preservation. With the help of a grant from the state historical fund, this Colorado built steam engine could be preserved and restored to its original condition by the Colorado Railroad Museum’s mechanical staff who is elated to have her. “This is a testament to the Rio Grande and the men who worked for the Rio Grande because it was the only large narrow gauge locomotive built in Colo-

rado by the Rio Grande,” Mike Spera, master mechanic said. “This engine is truly a Colorado original.” Locomotive 491 is one of eight remaining narrow gauge engines in the K37 class that were transformed from the C-41 class; the ambitious result of Denver mechanical engineers like P.C. Withrowe of Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad Burnham Shops and George R. Ballard, president of General Iron-Sterns Roger. Both men wanted to
put Colorado on the map for engine manufacturing, an undertaking headed by the rust belt which included states like Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania. But through the cooperation of Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, AMSCO Foundries, and the Dorr Company, C-41’s were summoned to Denver by the Office of Master Mechanic in 1927 to begin their reconstructions into the K37 classes. By September of 1928, Locomotive 491 rolled out of the Denver Burnham Shops as Denver & Rio Grande Western, weighing in at 307,250 pounds. She was used around the Rio Grande routes, and retired in 1962 where she logged a total of 182,649 miles. She sat on the dead lines in Alamosa until she was donated to History Colorado in 1970. In June of this year, History Colorado handed her over to the Colorado Railroad Museum in the hopes that she will be restored to her original condition. The museum is requesting $24,000 to $30,000 from the state historical fund, a program of History Colorado, in order to remove asbestos, give the cab a makeover, replace boiler jackets and repaint. “History Colorado does not deaccession (remove) many pieces in their collection.” Donald Tallman, executive director said. “So for us to receive that was a really wonderful thing. It’s a great asset to the museum and it’s a great asset to the Golden community as well.” Should the museum receive the nec-

At the age of 28, Spera began volunteering at the museum 20 years ago, and with a title like “master mechanic” his expertise in this type of work is quite amazing as he is the youngest master mechanic in the country. “The thing that trips my trigger is the quality in the way they did things, this was not built in the `throw away generation’ like it is now where everything is disposable,” Spera said. “She was built in

Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway www.lariatloop.org
The Lariat Loop® Byway is a 40-mile route where you can retrace the motoring adventures of the early 1920s and experience the thrill of foothills exploration at the dawn of the Age of Motorcars. Colorado’s first gateways to the mountains still have sharp curves, winding roads, spectacular views, and waysides to refresh and delight the traveler. This byway is a combination of two historic routes: the Lariat Trail Scenic Mountain Drive ascending Lookout Mountain and the Bear Creek Canyon Scenic Mountain Drive. In combination, these routes were part of several of the “scenic circles” developed and promoted by Denver in 1915-1920s to help Coloradans experience the mountains in proximity to the Denver Metropolitan area. These roadways were designated to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

BUFFALO BILL DAYS
MOVIES IN THE PARK
FINE ARTS FESTIVAL
Buffalo Bill Days from July 23-27, 2014 is the shot of old west you have been looking for.
Golden's Movies & Music in the Park series is free and typically runs Friday nights in August at Parfet Park at 10th Street and Washington Avenue in downtown Golden. As the event draws near it's best to check the city website for the movie selections.
This open-air art gallery couldn’t take place in a more breathtaking area. Each year in August, Golden’s Fine Arts Festival hosts more than 140 artists from around the country. Eighty percent of featured artists are from colorful Colorado. The 22nd annual event will be August 16 & 17.
The series began in 2002 as a small gathering and has become more popular each year. The family -friendly movies are shown on a large inflatable screen. A number of vendors provide a good variety of refreshments, with the standard pizza, ice cream and soda, and, of course, popcorn. Watch for it.
The quality and affordability of the art displayed is what makes the festival so popular. The diverse work ranges in variety of art mediums including blown glass, photography, paintings, sculptures, and jewelry.
The event dates back to the 1940’s as a trail ride up Lookout Mountain to Buffalo Bill’s grave. The Buffalo Bill Days Committee has been able to expand the activities through the years and it is now the largest community festival held in Golden. The event draws many people from surrounding communities who enjoy bringing their families to a wholesome, small-town event. Festivities include entertainment, golf, Mutton Bustin’, the big parade on Saturday, vendors, a Duck Race, a classic car show including an orphan car show, and of course the Wild West Show at high noon on Saturday. Visit www.buffalobilldays.com more up-to-date information.
