Nearby residents support installing gates to close road after park hours

With all the necessary parties signed o , implementing overnight closures along Lookout Mountain Road is now a question of “when.”

During a Feb. 27 sta brie ng with Je erson County Open Space representatives, the county commissioners gave their go-ahead. e Sheri ’s O ce also supports the plan.

Open Space o cials have described how the decision ultimately lies with their agency, as the road goes across parklands. However, because it’s such an important issue, Open Space Director Tom Hoby said he wanted to have the sheri and commissioners’ consent before proceeding.

“It’s a really big deal,” Hoby told the commissioners. “ … We don’t want to make that decision alone.”

Agency to revamp I-70 geological trails, start work on final Peaks to Plains Trail segments

Some Golden-area parks and trails will get bigger and better over the next few years.

Je erson County Open Space is moving forward with several plans for local parks, including buying a 58-acre property to connect Apex and Windy Saddle Parks. e county commissioners gave all the items their go-ahead during a Feb. 27 sta brie ng. Most of the items must receive nal approval during a public Board of County Commissioners hearing.

neighborhood, by mid-March.

Director Tom Hoby told the commissioners Feb. 27 that his sta had “negotiated well” on the property. It was originally listed for $1.4 million, but Open Space is buying it for $795,000.

e 58-acre property borders the northeast corner of Apex Park and the very southeast corner of Windy Saddle Park, and could one day host trails to connect the two parks.

Deputy Director Hillary Merritt said Open Space must rst evaluate whether that’d be possible, as there are sensitive habitats and species in the area. It would have to establish a trail easement with Colorado School of Mines, which owns the adjacent parcel, she added.

Even if a trail isn’t possible, the purchase will help preserve Golden’s viewshed, conserve the land and preserve important wildlife corridors, Open Space described in a Feb. 27 memo.

Merritt noted how a 1-acre parcel within the property’s boundaries isn’t included in the land purchase,

as it’s owned by another party. But, Open Space is working to purchase it as well, she clari ed.

Restoring the I-70 geological trails

Additionally, Open Space is partnering with the Colorado Department of Transportation to revamp the two geological trails along Interstate 70 near the Dinosaur Parkn-Ride Lots.

Open Space’s Scot Grossman told the commissioners that the two Geological Interest Trails on the north and south sides of I-70 seriously need rehabilitation. Plus, the project will add small but important trail segments between the roadways and Open Space’s Tincup Ridge and Matthews/Winters parks.

Open Space and CDOT already received federal funds for the project last June, although the project requires an 80-20 match. Grossman said Open Space’s portion will be $180,000.

e project’s total price tag is $1.8 million, with work slated to run through 2026. Grossman said Open Space’s next step is signing a contract with CDOT, so the agencies can start design work.

Finishing up the Peaks to Plains Trail

Finally, Open Space is simultaneously moving forward with several aspects of the Peaks to Plains Trail through Clear Creek Canyon.

Crews are slated to start construction on the nal sections of the Huntsman Gulch segment soon.

e ve-mile Huntsman Gulch segment, which is west of Clear Creek Canyon’s Tunnel 1, includes two new trailheads with full amenities, several bridges and creek access points.

Je co received $10 million in regional funds for the Huntsman Gulch segment and put up $10 million of its own. One of the stipulations for the regional funds is that construction be broken into three contracts, with the rst two being executed in July 2022 and April 2023, Grossman explained. is nal construction contract, which includes six bridges and a concrete box culvert underpass, is scheduled to be completed by late 2026.

Additionally, the Central Canyon segment, which will be thenal six-mile piece from the Huntsman Gulch segment to the Big Easy Trailhead, has received $20.6 million in state and regional funding. Open Space is nalizing all the necessary paperwork to accept the money and start the design process, Grossman described.

Once complete, cyclists and pedestrians will be able to travel the 13 miles from Golden to Clear Creek County along the Peaks to Plains Trail.

State Legislation Promoting Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) Passes Its First Hurdle

An oft-mentioned priority of Gov. Polis and others has been to increase the housing supply throughout Colorado. One of the most successful programs has been the promotion of “Transit Oriented Development,” which has manifested itself in the construction of medium-rise and high-rise apartment buildings near light-rail stations.

Another strategy has been to promote and facilitate the construction of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in areas zoned for single-family homes.

The title of the bill is “Concerning increasing the number of accessory dwelling units.” A link to the full text of the bill is at RealEstateToday.substack.com

The ADU movement has met some resistance in certain circles, and would be impractical in many subdivisions with small lot sizes and no alleys. Because most local jurisdictions have required ADUs to have separate access and one designated parking space, it hasn’t been a viable option for most single-family homes in newer subdivisions — if the HOA would allow it.

Now there’s a bill (HB24-1152) that just passed the House Committee on Transportation, Housing and Local Government, which would require HOAs (and developers of new subdivisions) to allow ADUs without undue restrictions. The bi-partisan vote was 9-2, and the bill is now going to the House Appropriations Committee for approval before going to the floor of the House and then the Senate.

The prime sponsors in the House are Rep. Ron Weinberg (R-Larimer County) and Judy Amabile (D-Boulder, et al.). The prime sponsors in the Senate are Sen. Kyle Mullica (D-Adams County),

The bill specifically applies to Colorado’s metro areas, specifically to areas with a minimum 1,000 population served by a “Metropolitan Planning Organization.” There are only five MPOs in Colorado. The one serving the Denver metro counties (plus Clear Clerk and Gilpin) is the Denver Regional Council of Governments, or DRCOG.

Section 1 of the bill, as introduced, requires subject jurisdictions to allow one ADU, where practical, for any home zoned single-family detached, and it prohibits a jurisdiction from enacting or enforcing laws that restrict the construction or conversion of ADUs.

My home city of Golden allows ADUs, and I have seen them permitted above detached garages (a great application of the concept), and in walk-out basements. The required parking space could be a separate driveway or one

space in a multi-car garage. It would be hard to create an ADU in a single family home on a small lot without a walk-out basement or room for a separate structure.

Every jurisdiction subject to the law, if passed, would be required to report to the Division of Local Government that it has met the law’s requirements and developed one or more strategies to “encourage and facilitate” the construction of ADUs.

The bill also establishes a grant program within the Division to help local jurisdictions create their plans and strategies, reduce permitting fees, and provide technical assistance to builders and owners.

It also empowers the Colorado Economic Development Commission to expend $8 million on a contract with the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority (CHFA) to provide affordable loans, interest rate buy-downs, and down payment assistance plus direct loans related to the construction and conversion of ADUs.

Accessory dwelling units facilitated by the proposed law won’t make a huge dent in the housing crisis, but they have

other benefits. For starters, it will help homeowners create a revenue stream that could help them keep their home.

One of the rules for allowing ADUs in Golden and elsewhere is that the owner of the property must live on the premises — either in the main house or in the ADU. In other words, an owner or investor couldn’t add an ADU and have two rentals units. HB24-1152 disallows that requirement.

Follow-up on Propane Article

Last week I had a link to an article promoting the use of propane as a backup, even for an all-electric home. Reader Phil Cox pointed out to me that it wouldn’t work in Denver (and possibly other cities) because its building code prohibits the installation of a propane tank anywhere that is within 300 feet of a natural gas (methane) supply line. Over the last two months, Open Space and its partner agencies hosted public meetings about closing a 4-mile stretch of Lookout Mountain Road that crosses Je co and Denver parklands after park hours.

is would help curb illegal activity, such as shooting guns, vandalism and littering, that occur overnight. No residences would be impacted.

Along with the City of Golden, local re districts and other partners, most surrounding residents also support the plan. In fact, dozens have asked Je co to expedite the process and install automated gates before summer, emphasizing concerns about gunshots and other illegal activity on the mountain.

Open Space’s original installation timeline was late 2024, but Hoby said his agency would its best to meet residents’ desires by expediting the process.

However, at the Feb. 27 sta briefing, he didn’t have a rm timeline. He said there are several remaining steps, including building vehicleturnaround areas near the gate sites, and working with Xcel Energy to get electricity to the sites.

“We have to make sure we have good signals and good technology,” Hoby said of the gate sites. “ … Once we have (an installation timeline), we’ll communicate that.”

Is a safer mountain on the horizon?

Although the parking areas and surrounding areas are closed an

hour after sunset, Lookout Mountain Road is even busier at midnight than it is at 10 a.m. on the weekends. Based on cell phone data, law enforcement contacts, litter, gra ti and other indicators, there’s a large amount of illegal activity in the area at night, Open Space o cials have described.

at’s something both the unincorporated Je erson County residents atop Lookout Mountain and Golden residents at the mountain’s base know all too well. Many wrote to Je co o cials, emphasizing the increasing number of gunshots, dangerous motorists, litter, re hazards and other concerns.

Several said they’ve found bullets on their properties, with one resident saying his camper — which was parked 15 feet from where his children sleep — was hit by a bullet.

“Waiting for next winter for implementation is not acceptable,” Beverly Heights resident Julie Clark wrote. “ … I fear that someone may be injured by an errant bullet. e longer o cials wait to install (the gates), the greater likelihood that this fear may become reality.”

Je co Sheri ’s deputies and Golden police o cers have done their best to patrol the area. However, Open Space’s Mary Ann Bonnell said it’s “a fool’s errand” without

gates because people come in behind the o cers and re ll the areas.

Once the gates are up, though, residents and law enforcement o cers fear some illegal activity will move into the neighborhoods outside the gates. Commissioner Andy Kerr also anticipated some visitors will try to sneak in after park hours.

Bonnell and Hoby said Open Space has seen similar issues at other parks after gates were installed, and neighboring residents reported any problems they saw. ey hoped Lookout Mountain locals would do likewise.

Hoby added that installing gates won’t be “the end-all be-all” of addressing illegal activity on and around Lookout Mountain, and that all stakeholders will be “on alert” for continued issues.

Once the gates are installed, emergency responders can still access the road for re evacuations and other emergencies. ey’ll also be able to open it as an alternate route during weather-related closures along Interstate 70 and U.S. Highway 40, if deemed appropriate and necessary, Open Space documents stated.

Open Space is considering allowing pedestrians and cyclists to use the road overnight, which Commissioner Lesley Dahlkemper would be a nice balance of curbing illegal activity while still allowing some overnight use.

Goldenite Corner: Author shares experiences as Lookout Mountain firefighter, rescuer

When asking Joanne Greenberg about her life, she’ll say: “Anything good that happened to me, I fell backwards into.”

A friend convinced Greenberg to join the Lookout Mountain Fire Department with her in 1972, and they became its rst two female re ghters, according to Greenberg. Greenberg didn’t know at the time, but she’d come to love being a re ghter. She loved helping people and working with her neighbors so much, she also joined the Idledale Rescue Team

— now called the Highland Rescue Team — and became an EMT.

For 13 years, Greenberg helped people along the Interstate 70 corridor from Golden to Evergreen. She worked res, car accidents, kidnapping cases and more.

Now, the 91-year-old Genesee resident is sharing those stories in her latest book “On the Run,” which was released last month.

Greenberg has penned about 20 novels over her career, the most famous of which is “I Never Prom-

ised You a Rose Garden,” which was adapted into a 1977 lm. But, “On the Run” is her rst major foray into nonction.

Greenberg said she started toying with the idea about ve years ago. She was partially inspired after reading Kevin Hazzard’s “A ousand Naked Strangers: A Paramedic’s Wild Ride to the Edge and Back.”

However, she said her experiences as a re ghter and EMT were very di erent from Hazzard’s and she wanted to share how much she loved working with her colleagues and helping the victims they encountered.

Nettie Calvi, who worked with Greenberg on the rescue team, said her friend has always been a captivating storyteller, whether in person or in writing. Now, “On the Run” reects that, she continued.

Determined to help

e book describes how, when Greenberg and her friend rst joined the department, they didn’t receive a very warm welcome. Many of their

male colleagues said they’d “scream and faint,” and wouldn’t be able to take the foul language. Some of them quit because they joined, Greenberg said.

But, Greenberg grew up on the streets of New York City. ere wasn’t much she couldn’t handle. Plus, she knew how devastating res could be in the foothills, so she and Scott weren’t going to be hindered.

During her time as a re ghter and later a rescue team member, Greenberg saw it all — from the tragic and bittersweet to the strange and comedic.

She recalled one humorous anecdote of responding to a house re and seeing one of her colleagues carrying Tupperware out of the home.

Greenberg said she jumped into action by pointing out all the ne items that really needed to be rescued.

One of the more tragic stories she relayed was helping rescue 3-yearold Lori Poland, who was kidnapped from her Sheridan home in 1983.

A pair of birdwatchers happened to nd her in a Genesee Park outhouse pit a few days later, and Greenberg recalled helping her at the scene.

Calvi said Greenberg has always been very personable. Rescue team members worked with people who were under the in uence, injured or scared, but Greenberg had a way of developing rapport with them.

Additionally, Greenberg was the rescue team’s rst “north side” member and became the “backbone” in recruiting others from Lookout Mountain and Genesee, Calvi said.

After writing ction for so many years, Greenberg said “On the Run” was easier to write in some respects. She had records of incidents she responded to, which helped greatly. Plus, because it was non- ction, she didn’t have to worry about writing herself into a corner.

Still, Greenberg said it’ll likely be her only memoir-type book, as she’s now working on another novel. In a world so full of division and anger, Greenberg hoped “On the Run” showed how underneath all the chaos and crises “is this vein of sanity,” meaning those who choose to help.

Colorado Environmental Film Festival expands and entertains for 18th year

e 18 th annual Colorado Film Festival opened Feb. 22 at the Colorado School of Mines Green Center for the very rst time. is was more than a venue change, according to Dave Steinke, cofounder of the CEFF. e move to the School of Mines was the best way to expand the show.

Festival director Nicole Bickford said the change to the School of Mines location really upgraded the festival.

e larger halls and auditoriums were great for showing the lms and hosting events like the silent auction to raise funds for the 2025 festival.

Kirk Glienke and his quartet, the Renewable Trio, were the sounds of the weekend. e band includes Will Mulligan on the ugelhorn and Scott Grove on the keyboard.

Glienke’s associate Daria Joanna played cello on opening night.

Bickford said the festival wasn’t as fancy when it started with CEFF 18 years ago. Steinke agreed.

Steinke met co-founder Shawna Crocker while he was promoting a lm “ e Greatest Good.” Steinke worked for the U.S. Forest in Public A airs and Crocker was a teacher.

ey met at DC Environmental Film Festival, one of two festivals centering on environmental lms in the U.S. e second one was in California. Crocker and Steinke realized that there needed to be a festival in the middle.

“In between the two festivals was a big giant wasteland,” Steinke said. “We wanted to make a lm festival in between for everyone else.”

at rst year, Steinke said there were 30-40 people in attendance.

The new location for the Colorado Environmental Film Festival for 2024 was the Bunker Theater in the Green Center at the Colorado School of Mines. It o ered a bigger and more formal space for the festival.

“Going from that to the Colorado School of Mines was a quantum leap,” he said.

CEFF Board President Rocky ompson said the transition from the old location to the School of Mines actually began in 2019. en the COVID-19 pandemic forced the festival to go virtual for three years. ompson agreed with Steinke that the show was bigger and better after the move.

“We have the bigger space, now I would love to see it lled for 2025,” he said.

Today, the festival boasts over 66 lms, many of which are screening in the Green Center’s Bunker Hall with seating for up to 1,100 people. Steinke said the festival received 270 entries for the 2024 festival. “ e hardest part is having to say ‘no’ to 250 plus people.”

ompson said the youngest lmmaker to enter a lm in the history of the fest was six.

“He stood in front of his parents’ camera and talked about how we screwed up the environment,” ompson said.

is year, the youngest lmmakers were the ai brothers Prin, 13 and Paran, 11 Uthaisangchai. Prin’s lm “ e Story of the Leatherbacks” and Paran’s lm “In Search of Dugong” were both about animal species that have become endangered due to climate change.

e oldest lmmaker was Jan Haaken who directed “Atomic Bamboozle: e False Promise of a Nuclear Renaissance.”

Here are the award winners for the Colorado Environmental Film Festival:

Best Feature Film is “Covenant of the Salmon People.” e lm follows the Nex Perce Tribe as they struggle to save the wild salmon. e lm o ers a moving education on the cultural climate activism that indigenous people have undertaken and how climate change has compromised their work and their culture.

Best Short Length Film under 40 minutes is “Groundwork — A Family Journey into Regenerative Cotton.” is lm follows the struggle a family of farmers undertook to understand why their health, the health of the soil and the crops was declining. e problem was their pest extermination methods and in-

secticides. e lm’s message is that a healthy farm means harmony with all the living things, including some pests.

Best Youth Film is “Venus Ascending: Gender Equality and Water.” e lm traces the link between the struggle to nd clean water and the unequal burden that women take on in this struggle. e lm discusses the labor hours women in some African nations lose to providing drinking water to their families.

e CEFF Spirit of Activism Film Award went to “Fracking the System: Colorado’s Oil and Gas Wars,” a lm that looks at Colorado activists’ ght to ban fracking facilities that are too close to schools. e lm covers fracking facilities all over the state while also highlighting the struggle that activists undertake when ghting the oil and gas industry.

e Best of the Fest Film was “Flyways: e Untold Journey of Migratory Shorebirds,” which follows four teams of scientists across the globe as they attempt to track shorebirds’ movements. e lm utilizes several elements of good storytelling to draw the audience into the lives of these birds. It’s a riveting look at the lives of birds who are harbingers of the hazards of climate change to the planet.

Je co parents try to keep school in their community

at’s how some Je co parents are scrambling to raise more than half a million dollars to help open a charter school in a remote mountain canyon after Je co Public Schools announced it would close the K-8 school in Coal Creek Canyon.

e Je co school board voted this fall to close Coal Creek Canyon K-8 citing low enrollment and an unsustainable cost. But Je erson Academy, the charter network that was supposed to take over the building, is now facing the same issues and may not be able to open a school there after all.

Unlike when the district closed about 20 other schools in the past couple of years and reassigned students to nearby schools, district leaders acknowledged that closing Coal Creek Canyon K-8, located near the border with the Boulder district, would be di erent because of the school’s remote location. So the district opened a process o ering the building to a charter that might be better prepared to run such a small school.

Je erson Academy, an existing charter school network in Je co, was approved to open a prekindergarten through eighth grade school in the Coal Creek Canyon building.

But now that the school may not open after all, parents are unsure of the options their children will have this fall.

Parent Ashley Allen said that the

next closest district school, ree Creeks K-8, is about a 19-minute drive away in good weather.

Allen’s son has diabetes and she often has been called to come to school because her son’s blood sugar drops or his insulin pump is failing.

In those worst-case scenarios, the drive “can make for a very nervous parent,” she said.

Tim Matlick, executive director of Je erson Academy, said the charter school had been counting on having at least 87 students, and an additional 20 for its homeschool program. When submitting the charter application, Je erson Academy had

received 95 interest forms for potential students.

So far, the school has just 60 enrollments, and seven homeschool students signed up.

Parents from the canyon went to the charter school’s board meeting last week and asked for more time to raise the money themselves.

e charter school board gave them just until its next meeting, March 12, to help raise the $550,000. Without the funds, the charter board will decide whether to scrap the plans to open.

OK, now full disclosure here, this is one of my favorite events of the year and I always make it a point to be there on at least one of the days it’s happening. So, there are a few things you should know if you have never been to this event. One is that there are both indoor and outdoor stages. ey have tents, but keep in mind that it’s March and as I men-

tioned above, it can get pretty cold, especially at night. So, dress warm and watch the weather forecast.

Also, this always draws a big crowd and although they have several bars and beer stalls going, it can take a little longer for food and drinks than usual. So, be prepared to deal with that. It’s kind of a madhouse every year.

And last but not least, don’t drink and drive. Bring along a designated driver, no matter where you choose to go to celebrate on that weekend, or use good judgment and know your realistic limits. Nothing ruins a good time like ending up in jail or an emergency room, or worse, because you did something stupid.

For the love of music, consider donating an instrument to Colorado students

When I was in elementary school (fourth and/or fth grade, I can’t exactly recall), I played the clarinet. I’m not sure why I didn’t stick with it. Perhaps my passion for the written word took over, but I loved my instrument so much that I even gave it a name: Clara the Clarinet.

Each year, there is an instrument drive that allows you to share your love of an instrument with a music student. It’s called Bringing Music to Life and, this year, it takes place March 4-16.

e drive takes gently-used musical instruments and gives them to underfunded school music programs across Colorado.

What is so cool about this drive is that although the instruments are given to the schools, they are

assigned to a student for the entire time the student is in the school’s music program. at means the student gets to treat it as their own — and take responsibility for it – because they take the instrument home with them for practice and, whenever they want to, elsewhere, like to jam with friends, learning from peers. ose who do not have an instrument to donate can give funds to the drive’s instrument repair fund.

I’ve interviewed the founder of Bringing Music to Life, Steve Blatt (you may recognize his name from

his time with Colorado Public Radio many years back), a couple of times. Something he said stuck with me: the repair fund is as important as the instrument part of the drive.

Every used instrument is going to need some sort of repair, he said, and beginning music students don’t know the di erence between an instrument in “excellent playable condition” and one that’s not functioning properly. For example, if an instrument is not sounding right because it is in less-thangood condition, the student may get frustrated with it, thinking they lack talent and that might cause them to give up. So, it’s important that every student not only gets an instrument, but that it is in “excellent playable condition.”

Bringing Music to Life is a nonpro t, and it partners with a number of local businesses — Denver Percussion, Luther Strings, Monkton Guitars and Rocky Mountain Music Repair – that provide repair services on the instruments for a discounted rate.

Bringing Music to Life accepts nearly any type of musical instrument – particularly those used in band and orchestra. ere are drop-o locations across the metro area, with the two in the west metro area being Flesher Hinton Music, 5890 W. 44th Ave, in Wheat Ridge; and Golden Music, 10395 W. Ice fishing creates and continues bonds between friends and families in Colorado

e Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife estimates shing in Colorado generates $2.4 billion in economic output each year, and ice shing is quickly becoming a major source of that revenue, according to CPW.

If you don’t know how or are intimidated by trekking out on the ice for the rst time, CPW has everything you need.

“We provide the gear, we provide the demonstrations, and those that are our experts just love to o er up their opinions and their services to show o the fun things that you get to do outside of work and getting into Colorado,” Staunton Park Manager Zach Taylor said.

CPW constantly updates where and when shing clinics are held across the state, including one held recently at Staunton Park in Pine.

Promoting ice shing serves several roles.

“We as a community and a culture don’t talk much as a community anymore when we can get people outside, maybe outside their comfort zone, but (we want to) show them how easy it is and how fun it can be,” Taylor said.

Volunteers are a critical part of CPW’s goal and mission to get people outdoors in Colorado around the year and their contributions and considerable.

Each year 4,000-6,000 volunteers engage with CPW — some who connect for one day, and some who engage daily. Volunteers contribute over 320,000 hours per year with an annual economic impact of $9.4 million, according to CPW.

“I was brought up in a culture with my mom and dad that man is put on this earth to serve other men, and so how we make other people better is how we relate with them,”

Longtime CPW volunteer Michael Hedgpeth from Elizabeth said. “ is gives me the opportunity to relate to people every time I come out here.”

Hedgpeth said he’d been coming out to Staunton Park for so long CPW asked if he would want to volunteer and share his knowledge of ice shing with others. He quickly accepted the unpaid position.

“I feel like I’m honestly serving a greater purpose from helping to give back to mankind to help us be better people, better at what we do,” Hedgpeth said as he reeled in a nice trout from his small hole in the ice during the Staunton Park clinic.

friendship bonds solidified on the ice

Al Jaramillo and Archie Garcia consider themselves brothers, not by birth, but from more than 40 years of friendship.

e pair shed through several feet of ice at Georgetown Lake in early February.

“We’re ice shing today and it’s going to be a nice day,” Jaramillo said. “You know, you can’t beat it with the sun shining down on us, the sh are biting… it beats going to work every day.”

ese guys have the modern technology and tools of the sport, including a power auger to dig through the ice and several sonar “ sh- nders.”

e sport can be as basic or as high-tech as you want to make it, the two men said. It also means you can spend as little or as much as you want to get into the sport.

“It depends how you want to out t yourself, but you can spend a lot of money,” Garcia said. “ ese are $100 boots, a $75 jacket $75, the sleds are another $50, the reels are $100, the sh nders are around $300. It’s not a cheap sport, but you could come out here with a stick with a string tied to it and might get lucky.”

eir drill-powered auger was equipped with a frisbee near the drill, “If augur falls into the hole it won’t sink oating on top of the hole,” Garcia said. So, even with their high-tech gear, simple solutions can be the best.

Pop-up tents with propane heaters are also popular to stay warm and out of the wind. According to one angler on the ice at Georgetown Lake, you’re also looking at between $400 and $1000 to buy the comfortable set-up. However, it still doesn’t guarantee more sh.

“It’s a little luck and a little skill,” Drew from Longmont said.

On the opposite end of the lake, two ice shers cut through the solid frozen lake with a hand-operated auger.

Rik Ramunno from Lakewood and his good friend Kyle, of Denver, twisted their way into the ice an inch at a time.

Ramunno, who grew up in Eagle, has been ice shing his entire life, but this was the rst outing for Kyle.

“You can’t learn how to do something new unless you do it. I think ice shing is something that people look at and say ‘that’s kind of cool’ but I have no idea how to go about it,” Ramunno said. “Doing it with Kyle, now he can do this whenever he wants.”

e pair also enjoyed the connection between ice shing and history, when the “sport” was a necessity.

“You know a man used to have to come to the ice to get food, I think it’s important to remember where we come from,” Kyle said.

Guided ice fishing tours: leave the work to the pros

Sport Fish Colorado based in Lake City is one of dozens of guide services across the state that o ers to “take care of everything,” according to coowner Aimee Withrow.

A mix of shing areas in Antero Reservoir, Tarryall Reservoir, Blue Mesa Reservoir and Taylor Reservoir draw clients from Denver and Colorado Springs for ice shing, Withrow said.

If you’re 16 or older, all you need is a state shing license, warm clothes and a desire for the experience.

“ e guides would have all the gear they would set everything up for you.

ey know the spots they like to sh so generally they’re getting on sh right away,” Withrow said.

Sport Fish Colorado o ers three and six-hour guided experiences at any of the lakes they cover.

e cost for a three-hour excursion for two is about $400, Withrow said.

e guides will do as much or as little as the customer wants, including taking the sh o the hook or cleaning, appropriate sh, to take home for dinner, Withrow added.

Dragon Boat Film Festival Taps into Cultural Connection

The Dinosaurs are coming to Denver, here’s what you need to know

Jurassic Quest, a traveling dinosaur experience, is coming to the Colorado Convention Center March 8-10. It’s more than just a walk past a pile of dinosaur bones. According to one of the “dino trainers” Martin Ho man, who goes by Park Ranger Marty during the Quest, the experience is one you have to see for yourself.

In addition to life-like dinosaurs, Jurassic Quest’s classic experiences for the whole family include:

• some of the largest rideable dinosaurs in North America,

• live dinosaur shows,

• interactive science and art activities

• a fossil dig with real fossils like T-Rex teeth,

• a triceratops horn and life-size dino skull,

• a “Triceratots” soft play area for kids,

• bounce houses and in atable attractions,

• photo opportunities and more.

According to the Jurassic Quest announcement, the event includes exhibits, activities, displays and more.

Ho man said kids under age 10 can actually ride on some of the dinosaurs, but only in designated areas of the Quest.

He said that the rideable dinosaurs are clearly indicated. Some trainers walk around with smaller animatronic dinos that kids can ride on as well.

Ho man wants readers to know that Jurassic Quest is in no way a liated with Jurassic Park or Jurassic World movie franchises. “Jurassic” is just the coolest of the era names.

Ho man suggests that families order advance tickets now, as the shows sell out quickly. As of press time, there were still tickets left. Jurassic Quest runs:

“One of the things that I always like to mention is the fact that dinosaurs are a gateway science,” he said. “So if your kids are into dinosaurs, all of a sudden, you’ll nd out that they’re learning about biology, they’re learning about geology, they’re learning about astronomy, all of these di erent things. It’s just because they think dinosaurs are cool.”

e charter leaders are also trying to raise money. Matlick said they now have preliminary approval for a startup grant from the state department of education for about $107,000. ey’re also looking at a possible grant of about $75,000 from the Denver-based Daniels Fund.

When the charter was approved by the Je co school board, one condition was that the Je erson Academy network set aside $250,000 to help support the new charter in the canyon.

Matlick said there is discussion about whether that money should be used to close the $550,000 funding gap or if it should be held in reserves for other potential problems once the charter opens.

Matlick said the district has been generous. e agreement to lease the building would only cost the charter $196,000 per year, to cover district-provided maintenance including custodial sta , snow removal, and trash pickups.

All the furniture and technology in the building would be donated to the charter.

But, he said, the community’s help is going to be critical.

“We’ve got a big group working to make this happen,” said Allen, whose son is a second grader at Coal Creek Canyon K-8. She started the GoFundMe page, and set it up so that money will be refunded to donors if the school doesn’t open.

As of Monday afternoon, the GoFundMe page had just over $5,000. “Our 4 children all went to this school. It is a vital part of the Coal Creek community. Please keep this school available to the community for their children,” one donor wrote.

If grants and donations can help in the rst year or two, Allen said, parents and charter leaders believe that young children in the canyon community will help enrollment grow in future years to make the school sustainable.

Allen said parents are working on proposals to ask the local Coal Creek Canyon businesses including a co ee shop, the local garage, and some restaurants to pitch in. ey also plan to ask bigger businesses like Denver Water, which has trucks passing through the canyon regularly.

Still, she is worried. ree Creeks is such a large school that it would be a big change for her son. If there is no school in the canyon, Allen said, she and her husband are considering moving.

“I will say the stress feels like it’s been nonstop for two years,” Allen said.

In a letter Je erson Academy sent

to families, charter leaders said that if they do not open the school, Jeffco district leaders will meet with families the day after the charter’s board meeting to speak “about their plans for next year and what oneyear programming options could be possible.”

Before getting a charter school approved to open, the district had contingency plans to keep the elementary portion of the school open for one additional year. Middle school students would have either gone to ree Creeks, or chosen remote learning facilitated within the Coal Creek building.

Je co district leaders declined to speak about alternative plans. Lisa Relou, chief of sta for the district, said “we are doing everything we can to support” the charter in opening.

Just as they have for the past several years, the Colorado School of Mines senior basketball players put their blood, sweat and tears into their nal home games.

Literally.

e Orediggers closed out their 2023-24 regular seasons at home March 1-2 against Adams State and Fort Lewis.

e women’s team lost its Senior Night game to Adams State 82-63, but took down Fort Lewis 89-82 the following night. Meanwhile, the men’s team blew out Adams State 93-68 on Senior Night, and then toppled No. 2 Fort Lewis 70-65 in a nailbiter nish.

Both the men’s and women’s teams were slated to play their rstround RMAC tournament games March 5 against Regis and UCCS, respectively. Afterward, they’ll set their sights on the NCAA Division II tournament, as the brackets will be announced March 10.

With the regular season behind them, the seniors hoped to make deep runs in both tournaments and extend their nal season at Mines as long as possible.

Senior guard Ashley Ste eck added: “I’m ready for the madness.”

Shifting into third gear…

It’s been a long ve years, as far as they can see. e three departing seniors on the women’s basketball team could use a vacation, but rst they’ve got to take care of their Mines family.

Ste eck, center Shelby Nichols and guard Loralee Stock all started at Mines in fall 2019. ey were roommates in the dorms their freshman year, so they “got really comfortable really fast,” Ste eck said.

All three ended up using their COVID-19 eligibility to stay a fth year, so they’re all graduating together in May.

Ste eck and Nichols are completing master’s degrees in engineering and technology management, and Stock is nishing a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.

All three have accepted jobs in the Denver area, and plan to stay in touch and visit Golden to cheer on the Orediggers. ey’re also considering joining a Mines alumni recreational team called the Leaky Buckets.

“It feels like it’s gone by in the blink of an eye,” Nichols said of her college career. “I feel super-blessed to have the greatest team, coaches and support system here.”

Nichols said she’ll continue to be Ste eck and Stock’s biggest fan, describing Stock as “an absolute menace on the court” and saying Steffeck is one of the greatest players in Mines history. She was thankful to play with them all ve years.

Stock, likewise, praised her friends and teammates. She believed Nichols and Ste eck had seen her through “a lot of di erent phases of myself,” as she tried to gure out who she was and who she wanted to be around.

“I really appreciate them accepting me into their world,” she said.

After all the ups and downs they’ve experienced during their time at Mines, Ste eck said there was no one better she could’ve shared it with. She and Stock expressed how much they care about their teammates, with Ste eck adding, “I can’t wait to see what they all do. ey’ll always have my support.”

‘Be where your feet are’ e bond among the seniors on the men’s team had a similar strength, although it was forged very di erently.

On Senior Night, the Orediggers celebrated fourth-year senior Taylor Spurlock and Sam Beskind, a graduate transfer from Stanford who joined Mines last season.

1. Public bid openings have been eliminated in favor of the following process:

a. An on-line meeting with the District representative as the facilitator will post instructions as part of solicitation or addenda.

b. Contractor will email PDF to District representative before the time noted in the solicitation. A read receipt and responding email as to the time the bid was received, will be returned to each contractor.

c. District to log on to on-line meeting several minutes before bid closing to confirm set-up.

d. Contractor shall print the email transmission to PDF. This will act as the time stamp.

f. Apparent low bid would be announced via the on-line meeting with follow-up on material information needed to verify references etc.

The Wheat Ridge Sanitation District will receive sealed, electronic bids for the following project until 3:00 P.M., March 19, 2024. Immediately thereafter all bids will be publicly opened and read aloud as outlined above. All bids must be on a unit price basis. The unit price given will be used in case of a discrepancy with total price extensions.

Contractors desiring sets of the Contract Documents may obtain them on/or after February 29, 2024 at 9:00 A.M. from a request email addressed to Brian Techa (btechau@martinmartin.com) and Bill Willis (bwillis@martinmartin.com).

The principal work to be provided under this contract shall consist of five (5) point repairs, seven (7) full linings of 6” to 8” VCP, and fourteen (14) sanitary main line remove/ replacements, and auxiliary items including excavation, asphalt removal/ replacement, bypass pumping, traffic control, and replacement of appurtenances thereto. Work is located within the City of Wheat Ridge, Colorado.

Each bid must be accompanied by a bid security in the amount equal to five percent (5%) of the bid.

The Wheat Ridge Sanitation District reserves the right to reject any and all bids, to waive any informalities in the bidding and to accept the proposal deemed most advantageous to the best interest of the District. The District reserves the right to award the contract in a period not to exceed 60 days from the date of the bid opening.

Spurlock, who’s from southeastern Kentucky, said Mines recruited him after his brother sent the coaches his lm. He knew he wanted to study engineering, so he was locked in after he heard about Mines’ academic reputation.

Spurlock, who joined in fall 2020, was grateful for his four years with the Orediggers. He appreciated all the support from his coaches, teammates and family members, saying, “It’s been a long four years academically and athletically. Nights like these make you appreciate it all.”

Beskind was likewise grateful for everyone’s support on Senior Night. Although he also had a Senior Night at Stanford two years ago, he said the March 1 celebration “was the real deal.” He’s now used all his eligibility from redshirting and COVID-19.

Beskind, who’s graduating this May with a master’s degree in advanced engineering systems, said he’s interested in climate technology and even hosts a podcast on the topic.

He’s unsure of his post-graduation plans. He might end up nding a job at home in Arizona, or staying in Colorado long-term as he now has a strong support system here.
