Golden Day 2024: Colorado’s territorial capital turning 165

Golden’s going to need a bigger birthday cake this year to t all 165 candles.

On June 16, the city commemorates the anniversary of its founding, traditionally called Golden Day. e City Council will mark the occasion with an annual proclamation at its June 25 meeting.

In 1859, George West and other members of the Boston Company established Golden City. “City” was dropped from the town’s title in January 1872.

According to city documents, when Golden was founded, members of the Boston Company and others camping in the valley met and agreed to begin the formation of a new city. ey took steps to form a town company and to survey and lay out a town site.

Famous miner George Andrew Jackson requested the city be named after his most trusted friend and partner, omas L. Golden. Jackson and Golden had been caught in a ash ood in Clear Creek, west of the city’s current boundaries. e ood nearly took Jackson’s life, but Golden stayed by his side.

George West, president of the Boston Company, recorded these events and the city’s founding. He later served as a city councilor, started two newspapers and wanted citizens to establish June 16 as “Golden Day” to commemorate the anniversary of Golden’s founding.

e city served as the capital of the o cial Territory of Colorado from 1862 to 1867, when it was moved to Denver.

Golden has solidi ed several claims to fame over the years, including being the home of Coors Brewery and the birthplace of the Jolly Rancher candy.

But, over the years, Goldenites have shared how they love the area most for its natural beauty, recreational opportunities, community events and other features.

Wouldn’t It Be Great if You Could Assume the Seller’s Low-Interest Loan? Maybe, if It’s a VA Loan

Most mortgage loans are not assumable, but VA loans are assumable when certain conditions are met. Here’s what I have learned about that.

There are many sellers who are veterans and obtained a VA loan on the home they are now selling. If they don’t need to regain their certificate of eligibility for a VA loan on their replacement home, they can sell their home to anyone — not just a veteran — and let that person assume their VA loan. For the seller to regain their eligibility for a VA loan on their replacement home, the buyer would have to be able to qualify for a VA loan as a veteran.

Wendy Renee, our in-house lender at Golden Real Estate, helped me learn the rules for assuming a VA loan.

The good news is that a buyer can assume a VA loan, even if they would not qualify for a VA loan for themselves. If the seller has a VA mortgage at, say, 2.75%, a buyer would get to take over that loan and make the same payments. Not bad, given today’s loan rates over 6 percent!

Conventional loans guaranteed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are not

assumable. Sellers with a VA loan will want to take advantage of this crucial selling point over competing listings on the MLS. Every seller who has an existing VA loan should have his listing agent emphasize that fact in the MLS, pointing out its interest rate and that it’s assumable. However, if it’s important to the seller that he regain his entitlement to a VA loan for his replacement home, then it should be noted in the MLS that the seller will only allow an eligible veteran to assume the loan.

Hooray for that veteran, because a new VA loan would probably have an interest rate over 6%.

Although the buyer will not need to meet the military eligibility, he or she will need to meet the financial eligibility requirements of the lender. The lender, not the VA, must approve the assumption. If the lender approves your financial qualifications, you can proceed with the assumption. Note: Lenders are not required by the VA to allow assumption. Most lenders have a minimum FICO score to qualify for a loan. With Rocket Mortgage, that score is 580. Other lenders require a minimum score of 620.

As we navigate the real estate market for the week of June 5th-12th, 2024, it is clear that the market continues to retract. Increased inventory and hesitant buyers have led to significant shifts in market dynamics. Now the key points:

Retraction persists as more inventory enters the market and pending transactions decline, leading to a higher months’ supply of inventory than usual for the second week of June.

The growing inventory and shrinking buyer pool have caused prices to fall slightly as we transition into summer.

Our average daily active listings have increased week over week, with inventory significantly higher compared to the same period last year.

New listings have shown an upward trend, and this activity is expected to continue growing until September. However, pending transactions have declined compared to the previous weekend.

The odds of selling have decreased

values, that’s not very likely.

VA loans require the payment of a funding fee, and that is true for the buyer who assumes a VA loan. That funding fee is 0.5% of the loan amount. As with the original borrower, that fee can be waived if the buyer is a disabled veteran or the spouse of a deceased veteran with a service-related disability.

Compensating for that 0.5% funding fee is the fact that you won’t have other fees, including paying for an appraisal.

A processing fee of $250 to $300 will be charged to the buyer in addition to the funding fee.

Note that the VA is not the lender

The loan is merely guaranteed by the VA. The underwriting requirements may differ from lender to lender.

So, how do you find a home on which the seller has a VA loan? Unfortunately, that is a not a searchable field on the

MLS, even for us MLS members. However, if you find a home you want to buy, we can find that property on Realist, an app within the MLS, which tells what kind of loan, if any, was taken out by the seller. And, of course, we can ask the listing agent if that VA loan is still in place and what the current balance and interest rate is. Depending on the buyer’s cash reserves, it may be necessary to apply for a second mortgage.

When the loan is assumed, the seller needs to request a release of liability from the lender. Without that, the seller could be responsible for late payment fees or even default by the new borrower. Ask your lender in advance of agreeing to the assumption whether you will receive a release. If they won’t, that could or should be a deal breaker.

To balance the market with a 6-month supply of inventory, we would need a significantly higher number of total listings, indicating we are currently far from market equilibrium.

Showings last week were down slightly, with the average number of showings per property and the number of showings required to go under contract showing some fluctuations.

Price reductions were more prevalent this week, with a notable portion of units going under contract after reducing their price. The size of these reductions has remained consistent.

If you are wondering when to list your property this summer, it is advisable to list as soon as possible. Growing inventory and a diminishing buyer pool could lead to longer days on market and potential price reductions. Listing earlier in the summer may help achieve the best possible price for your home.

The sellers designed this 4,603-sq.-ft. home at 6714 Field St. in Arvada for entertaining and were the general contractor when building it in 1985. Spaces for entertaining abound both indoors and on the large wraparound deck, which was rebuilt with Trex two years ago. There's an indoor hot tub in its own room that is well ventilated to avoid moisture-related issues. Scandinavian Midsummer Festival moves to Golden from Estes Park

Vikings quite literally descended on downtown Golden this weekend.

e 31st annual Scandinavian Midsummer Festival lled Parfet Park with music, dancing, food, crafts and more June 14-16. e festival moved from its traditional spot in Estes Park this year, as organizers wanted to host it closer to Denver.

Organizer Kristina Feste-Hanson of the Scandinavian Alliance of Colorado thanked the Golden community for its hospitality, saying her group was hoping to be back next year if all worked out.

e festival celebrates traditions from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. is year’s three-day schedule featured several cultural organizations, 50 crafts and food vendors, and a dozen dance and musical groups.

On June 15, the festival hosted an opening ceremony followed by traditional dances around the maypole. Many wore traditional Scandinavian garments, with a few sporting Viking garb, helmets and shields.

Not only was Golden a more central location for many of the attendees, organizations and vendors, but Dave and Ginny Johnston felt it also drew a bigger crowd.

e two, who are in the Swedish Folk Dance Club of Denver, said they loved attending the festival in Estes Park. However, they agreed that Golden was a lot closer and more convenient.

e Johnstons and other regular attendees described how Estes Park made for a nice weekend getaway, but it was often di cult and/or expensive to nd accommodations for the entire festival weekend.

Jason Lycan, a guitarist for the band Nordic Daughter, has played the midsummer festival a few times before, and appreciated that it was closer to Denver this year. He said he’s played Parfet Park before for the wintertime UllrGrass festival.

“Estes is gorgeous, but this is perfect for the festival,” he said while

looking around Parfet Park.

Kirsi St. Marie, president of Finlandia Foundation Colorado, said her group was participating in the festival for the rst time in at least ve years.

She thought the location was “convenient and beautiful.” e bulk of her group’s members are based in the Denver metro area, she described, and Parfet Park’s large trees provided a decent amount of shade from the insistent Colorado sun.

“So far, we like it,” St. Marie said of Parfet Park on June 15.

Preserving & sharing

Denver’s Destry Gillette, who’s of Norwegian descent and who attended the midsummer festival dressed as a Viking, has enjoyed stopping by the event over the years.

He recalled fond memories of his grandparents dancing and singing, and teaching him to cook, and he said he’s passed on many of those traditions to his children. He loved seeing so many others preserve their Scandinavian heritage through the festival’s foods, dances, music and other activities.

BizBeat: New taco joint brings ‘outlaw spirit’ to South Golden Road

If Golden is where the West lives, then South Golden Road’s new restaurant and bar is where the Western outlaw spirit lives.

Pancho & Jane, a Colorado-Mexican fusion taco joint, opened at 16500 South Golden Road May 30.

It’s operated by the same team behind e Eddy Taproom & Hotel.

e restaurant is hosting a grand opening party from 4-8 p.m. June 29.

e event will feature live music, liquor vendors, a taco-eating contest, cowboy-hating decoration and a liquor ra e bene ting BGOLDN.

Pancho & Jane is named for Mexican revolutionary Francisco “Pan-

cho” Villa and Colorado stagecoach bandit Jane Kirkham. So, all the restaurant’s cocktails, tacos and appetizers are infused with that outlaw spirit, Director of Food and Beverage Ben Shapiro explained.

e menu has a mix of classics and dishes with unique takes on them, Shapiro said. e carnitas taco with crunchy ramen noodle slaw, avoca-

do aioli and the restaurant’s special “black magic sauce” has been popular thus far.

On the appetizers side, the potato dorados and queso ameado have been big hits, he continued. e dessert menu also features rotating avors of paletas and a churro funnel cake.

Golden to crack down on non-compliant short-term rentals

The bulk of Golden’s licensed short-term rentals are in or around the downtown area, namely Wards 3 and 4. The City of Golden is planning to increase enforcement around short-term rentals operating without a license.

Councilors suggest limiting STRs per neighborhood, requiring year-round owner occupancy

Golden o cials are planning to increase enforcement around non-compliant short-term rentals, including those operating without a license.

Golden currently has 46 licensed STRs in residential neighborhoods, but o cials believe there may be dozens more operating without a license.

City sta con rmed at a June 11 City Council work session that it’s hiring a software company to identify those operating illegally. Sta members stated in a memo that the vendor contract should be nalized this month, but it will take a few months to get the system online and then identify and contact unlicensed STRs.

Rick Muriby, community & economic development director, explained how Golden placed restrictions on STRs in 2017, which would be enforced based on complaints. Since then, Muriby said Golden has received very few reported violations.

However, as Councilor Don Cameron explained, a recent incident with

ve STRs in the East Street neighborhood found that four were in violation. Sta members con rmed they are working with the property owners to bring them into compliance.

During the June 11 work session, City Manager Scott Vargo outlined how increased enforcement is one aspect of a much larger discussion city o cials are starting to have about STRs.

Cameron and Councilor Patty Evans suggested the city implement additional regulations and engage the community more on this topic.

Cameron suggested Golden pursue regulations limiting the number of STRs per neighborhood and/or citywide, and requiring the property owner to live on the STR property yearround. Currently, regulations only require property owners to live on-site for 10 months of the year.

Evans said enforcement is the critical rst step, as the city hasn’t been enforcing the regulations it has now, saying, “We have (STRs) that have been out of compliance for several years.”

She believed the city should take steps toward limiting the number of STRs per neighborhood, commenting, “ e issue with a large number … in a concentrated area, it changes the quality of life for the residents. ey’re not living in a residential neighborhood; they’re living in a hotel zone. It changes how people can enjoy their

own properties.”

Muriby clari ed that the city isn’t ignoring code enforcement issues, but as its enforcement is generally complaint-driven, it doesn’t proactively seek out properties or regulations to enforce.

“We don’t have the sta ng to do that on a large scale,” he said.

Muriby and Vargo noted that, once Golden hires the software company to search for unlicensed STRs, it will be “far more active in being able to monitor compliance and enforcing the rules when we have that in place,” as Vargo described.

Councilors Rob Reed and Lisa Vitry said increased enforcement is a good rst step, adding that hiring the outside vendor will also help with data collection. Between those two items, Vitry suggested waiting to ask the public whether the city’s current measures are working and what else Goldenites would like their o cials to do.

Reed and Councilor Paul Haseman also suggested increasing nes and penalties for those STRs that are out of compliance.

Once the system to monitor unlicensed STRs is up and running in a few months, sta members recommended sharing compliance reporting information with council monthly and then scheduling a follow-up study session in 2025.

St. Marie also emphasized how important a festival like this in increasing awareness of Scandinavian cultures in the United States and sharing them with others.

Violinist Sarah Jylkka, who plays in Nordic Daughter, said this was her third time at the festival. Although she’s half-Finnish, she said she’s learned a lot about her Finnish roots from attending the festival and meeting people there who carry on those traditions.

Lycan, who is of Swedish descent and whose wife is Norwegian, likewise appreciated a family-friendly opportunity to celebrate Scandinavia’s dress, music and other traditions every summer.

“It’s good for the kids to see,” Lycan said of the festival’s activities.

“A lot of these traditions aren’t carried on (otherwise).”

Meanwhile, Joanna Christensen was attending as president of both the Denver Danes social organization and the Ellen Lodge No. 21, the Denver-based chapter of the Danish Sisterhood of America.

Just like her groups’ activities, she believed the festival was an important way to preserve and share Scandinavia’s traditions in a fun way, allowing people of all backgrounds to engage with and appreciate them.

Christensen commended the organizers for their tremendous e orts this year and every year. Her organizations hadn’t participated in the festival much since 2010-11, but she said they would come back to Golden for it if it returned next year.

“I think this works well,” she said of the new location at Parfet Park.

Construction underway on CoorsTek headquarters in Clayworks district

Work is underway on CoorsTek’s new global headquarters near Ninth and Jackson streets.

e company, which is currently based along Denver West Parkway, broke ground on the project May 22.

e headquarters will be a fourstory commercial building and, once complete, will house other ofce space tenants as well as groundoor restaurants and retail businesses.

is building will be the rst in the new Clayworks district — a forthcoming superblock of commercial and residential projects.

CoorsTek announced the project

in 2021, and the Golden City Council approved the rezoning application in 2022. e 12-acre property was previously zoned for commercial use and manufacturing, and CoorsTek plans to build a hotel, additional o ce spaces, apartments, an arts district and more over the next 15-20 years.

e property was originally purchased by Adolph Coors in 1884 as a glassworks site, and Coors Porcelain — which later became CoorsTek — was founded on the site in 1910, according to a May 28 press release. e site was used for technical ceramics manufacturing and research until it was shuttered in 2022.

Crews started the demolition process onsite in late 2022, and four of the oldest buildings on campus were set to be partially preserved.

Event aims to get around unresolved county dispute with a permanent fix

Carolyn Autry has a pothole problem at her rural Morrison restaurant. She believes it’s the county’s responsibility to x the deep ruts near the entrance to Lynn’s Whistle Stop; the county feels otherwise.

Autry hopes customers and neighbors will step in to help and is hosting a pothole repair fundraiser on June 29. If the “Corks & Kegs for a Cause” event can raise $16,800, Autry said she can permanently repair the rutted road edge.

“ e damage is so bad it’s eating up people’s cars,” said Autry, a Conifer resident who bought the former Bear Cub Co ee & Pub on South Turkey Creek Road late last year. “I’m showing surveys showing it’s county property. e county says it’s not their responsibility.”

Je erson County Road & Bridge says the potholes are part of the access area to the restaurant’s parking lot, so maintenance falls to the business owner, according to county Public A airs Director Cassie Pearce.

No matter who’s responsible, the timeline for repairing the problem is short. Autry’s focus is now on getting it resolved within the narrow summer construction window.

“In running two businesses, I don’t

have time to ght the county,” said Autry, who also owns Lynn’s Tea Shop in Littleton. “All I know is I have a few short months to have this problem vious owners probably were trying to ght the county for it, too. And year by year, it keeps getting worse.”

Rather than patch the potholes, Autry has gotten quotes from asphalt companies to dig, regrade and repave the area — xing the issue once and for all. But the nearly $17,000 price tag is beyond her budget.

Instead, she’s hosting a party from 5-7 p.m. June 29. e evening includes a live band, hors d’oeuvres and tastings of new wines, beers and spirits that Lynn’s Whistle Stop plans to add to its menu. Tickets are $60.

“We’re introducing new wines and beers, and we want people to know what we’ve got,” she said. “We thought, why not do a fundraiser, and see if we can get people to help us get this done.”

Autry has other plans for her new business she hopes area residents will like. While it now serves co ee, pastries and sandwiches, she wants to add a full kitchen, eventually making it a breakfast destination restaurant.

“Our slogan is where meals and memories cross tracks,” she said. “I want people to be able to come here and have great memories. I want them to keep bringing families back, so we can watch kids grow up — all the good stu of a small-town place.

“ e community support for our business has just been great so far. I think people are really enjoying it.”

America is ideologically divided. Identity politics seems to be the order of the day with an intent to maintain the division or, at least, to minimize unity.  Labels identify opposing groups with these labels declared badges of honor for some or used as derogatory attacks by others.

In Je co, we love to vote — we had record turnout in the 2023 General Election, with Je erson County casting the highest percentage of votes of any county.

Consider former President Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again” which is abbreviated “MAGA.”  Trump supporters, and most of America, believe that the country is on the wrong track but they embrace the idea that America’s best days still lie ahead. President Biden, whose job approval rating is the lowest of any President in recent memory, regularly tries to make the term “MAGA Republicans” an insult. Similarly, Hillary Clinton called people who supported MAGA “deplorables”. Perhaps the extreme di erences between Conservatives and Progressives are the root of the ideological divide. eir beliefs are starkly di erent.

Conservatives believe that the founding of our country, the rst to codify self-rule, was extraordinary through  our Constitution which provides protection from overreaching government. ey believe in liberty, the ability to make one’s own choices with limited government interference and that merit is the basis for both individual and national economic success. Conservatives defend faith and fami-

lies believing that these core values must be maintained for our nation to continue.

Conservatives believe that defending our nation includes a strong military, adhering to the rule of law, and maintaining our national sovereignty. ey believe America is truly unique and capitalism is the best system for creating wealth and lifting many out of poverty.

Contrast these ideas with the observable beliefs of modern-day Progressives. Progressives believe the founding of America was fundamentally awed and the Constitution limits the power of government. (Of course, thats the purpose of the Constitution).   ey believe a utopian society can be created if government is allowed to solve all of life’s daily problems, merit is of little concern, and wealth should be redistributed so everyone can have equal outcomes. Progressives believe in moral relativism. ey seek to undermine the traditional family, as evidenced by their support of men competing in women’s sports and gender reassignment for children. National sovereignty means very little to them, as evidenced by their open borders which are allowing millions

of non-citizens to have access to the welfare state. ey are committed to making government the primary guiding force in American society.  With no moral absolute to which people adhere, there is a tolerance for ideas which are the antithesis of Conservative positions.

Since these two positions are diametrically opposed, how is there a secure future for our country and our families? How is “making the country great again” a poor idea? Why isn’t that the stated objective of both major political parties?

We are approaching the 2024 election with domestic and international issues that should be of concern to all Americans. Federal spending and the U.S. de cit are at their highest ever. ere are countless laws that make too many spending categories “mandatory”. Our country is of two minds and it will require great care and diplomacy to create the positive future we all want.

Let’s be wise when selecting our representatives. Our future, and our children’s future, depends on it.

How to park in Golden during festival season

Well, now that June is well on its way, we have a lot of great festivals happening here in Golden for the summer. So many, that it gave me a great idea on how to make a little extra money. With all these vendors all over town every week, I thought “there’s a great market to set up a pop-up tent selling pop-up tents!” I mean, every vendor needs one, right? But then it occurred to me that if they are vendors, they probably already have one. Ok, that was actually a not-so-great idea. But it was unique!

Well, let’s take a look at where you are going to be seeing those tents actually pop up this weekend. And, the festival roulette wheel stops right downtown on 12th and Arapahoe streets. at’s where the Artsweek Golden Festival will be set up on Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23.

It’s orchestrated by the Foothills Art Center and is a juried arts festival featuring 91 local and national artists in downtown Golden just outside the new Foothills Arts Center Astor House. You can see phenomenal art, experience art open houses, hear live music and there are even art activities for kids. Find more info at www. foothillsartcenter.org.

Admission is free and parking is… OK, let’s be honest: Parking for events in downtown Golden has become complicated, to say the least. ings have changed a lot over the last couple of years. Since you are going to have to deal with this situation no matter what you want to do downtown, we might as well tackle it now.

In case you haven’t noticed, gone are the days when parking in Golden meant tying your horse to a hitching post along Washington Avenue. I know that sounds ridiculous, but people actually used to do that when I was a kid growing up around here in the 1960s. OK, it was like two or three people, but the tourists used to get a big kick out of seeing that. e parking spots used to be nose-in with cars parking at an angle next to each other. en there was a renewal project that changed it to the parallel parking with a little more interesting sidewalk archi-

tecture that we see today. en they built a few parking garages and improved some of the lots around town but parking was pretty much free all over town.

en they started putting parking meters around town and it progressed from there until we now need an entire website complete with instructional video just to gure out all the parking fees and regulations here in Golden.

Northglenn Youth Theatre has been ‘feeding the souls’ of young performers for 30 years

Slight and bespectacled, 14-year-old Lilly Sergeef is eyeing Broadway. She is a veteran actor and has been in commercials for insurance companies and Village Inn since age 6.

But she is especially drawn to the stage, where she has never felt intimidated by the audience or other performers.

“Broadway is my goal,” ornton resident Sergeef said. “Being before an audience is never something I dread … it’s something I grew up on.”

A determined Vienna Frey also sees acting on Broadway in her future. e Broom eld resident said her parents are performers and she began acting when she 6. She’s starred in several plays and musicals including “Percy Jackson and Lightning ief” and “Shrek Junior.” Frey savors always diving into the characters she played.

“I just enjoy playing other people and getting into their stories,” said the 14-year-old Frey.

Both are veteran performers at Northglenn Youth eatre, which has been tutoring, supporting and ushering actors as young as 8 onto the local stage. Over 1,000 young performers have inhabited roles at Northglenn Youth eatre — or the NYT as the locals call it.

is year, NYT is celebrating its 30th anniversary, a testament to the wide-ranging support the theater has enjoyed even as cultural programs at local schools have scaled back their performances, said Kimberly Jongejan, Northglenn’s Cultural Programs Direc-

tor and the NYT director.

“Funding for arts programs is not always solid, especially in elementary and middle schools,” Jongejan said.

Most of NYT’s students come from communities outside of Northglenn because there is a dearth of theater programs in the north metro area, she added.

Northglenn o cials, meanwhile, have long supported the arts and the NYT, said Jongejan, who was hired in 1996 to help lead the arts program in Northglenn.

“It’s aways been this way,” she said. “ e city has always seen its arts and culture as a growing and thriving part of Northglenn.”

For example, Northglenn is the only city to include a state-of-the art performing arts space — the Parsons eatre — as part of its new recreation center, Jongejan said. e entire theater and recreation complex opened in 2021.

e Northglenn Arts & Humanities Foundation — NAHF — provides funding for the NYT as well as for public art and other cultural ventures in Northglenn, according to the city. Other sponsors include Colorado Creative Industries, Scienti c & Cultural District, Tour West, WESTAF and the National Endowment for the Arts, the city states.

Jongejan said the NYT has sent some of its graduates to Broadway and O -Broadway. Mostly, NYT students become teachers and perform at dinner theaters and other community productions.

Above all, NYT serves a higher purpose of stoking the dreams of young performers, she said, adding, “We feed kids’ souls.”

NYT Academy classes range from $25-$120 depending on duration and whether a participant is a resident of Northglenn or not, she said.

Each year, NYT puts on six productions performed at the Parsons eatre, three productions for 12- to 18-year-old performers and three for the NYT Jr., program, which include eight to 12 performers. ey are tutored by professional actors on a tight schedule that calls for auditions on Monday, rehearsals during the rest of the week and performances usually over two nights.

Productions this year include “Sister Act,” “Cinderella and e Fairy Godmother’s Spell,” “ e Brothers Grimm Spectacular” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

e NYT Academy also o ers acting basics for young performers through drama activities, scenes, songs and visual arts. One dance class is Broadway Basics, which offers kids ages 9-12 “ball change kicks, jazz squares and more while dancing to the tunes of Broadway’s best ballads,” according to the course description. e cost of that class is $38-$46.

Jongejan said registration fees for NYT Jr. productions are $200; NYT productions are $250.

Scholarships are needs-based and are awarded via an application process. ese scholarship awards range from 50% to 100% of fees being covered through the Northglenn Arts and Humanities Foundation, Jongejan said.

NYT’s more advanced classes teach how to manipulate an actor’s voice and body to create a memorable character, a “Fosse Posse” focuses on dancing for actors and a tap dance also teaches the basic steps and combination used in musical theater, according to the course guide.

Jongejan said the NYT is also offering a screenwriting course for Hip-Hop theatre. Students can also take technical theatre workshops for a glance at the behind-the-scenes production process, Jongejan said.

“We want our students to get a good, well-rounded look at what goes into a theater production and how important stage development, lighting and other behind-thescenes work is so important,” she said.

Amaro, who lives in ornton, admits acting isn’t really what drew him to NYT.

“School can be rough for some people,” Amaro said, adding his stutter is sometimes an obstacle.

“I needed friends badly, then NYT popped up for me and the light bulb in my head went o .”

So far, Amaro has not bumped up against any diva behavior among his cast mates.

“ e people are absolutely fantastic,” he said. “Everyone has been so helpful.”

irteen-year-old Aksel Gangji’s two sisters gave him a nudge toward acting and NYT where he started performing in 2019. He still su ers from some stage fright but powers through it with the help of his castmates. Gangji attends Rocky Top Middle School in ornton.

ey often cross their arms together and then say “Break a leg” before a performance, Gangji said. Actors also pass around a “Kudos” coin before they go on stage and tell each

other something positive about their work.

“Usually by then, you are saying ‘Oh great, I am going to perform,’” Gangji said.

He is also considering pursuing a career as a stage technician. “Sound, costumes, it’s what brings it all together,” Gangji said. “You can’t see the actors without the lights.”

Performing is a tradition in 14-year-old JJ Witmer’s family. His mom toured internationally with Up With People and he took his rst role as an actor at 6 as Tiny Tim in a high school production.

“It was really fun,” he said. He attends Riverdale Ridge High School in ornton.

He enrolled at NYT in 2018 and has acted in several productions including “Peter Pan” and “ e Little Mermaid.”

He’s learned to act with an English accent to play Hamlet and dyed his hair for another role.

“I like getting into a role and becoming more of that character,” Witmer said.

After “Hamlet” ended, he remembers talking with an English accent for two weeks.

“It just happened,” he said. “ at’s what you do when you get into a role.”

A hankering for the harmonica

Members of Denver’s Mile High Harmonica Club share how the small instrument has a mighty impact

It’s just a little oblong tube lled with exible metal “tongues” that vibrate when you blow into it.

But members of Denver’s Mile High Harmonica Club seem to nd endless joy in their instruments.

Along with the fun of making music together, club members also credit the humble harmonica with improving their social lives, making them smarter and even helping people with lung disease breathe easier.

Founded in 1994, the harmonica club is celebrating its 30th birthday this year. e club now has about 65 members, but it originally sprang from a small group of enthusiastic students under the tutelage of Swallow Hill Music instructor Paul Davies.

“ e rst meeting o cially gathered at my house,” said Davies. “We have all become very good friends.”

Today, the harmonica club meets twice a month at Historic Grant Av-

enue, 216 S. Grant St., a former Methodist church built in 1908 that is now used as a community center.

Once a year, however, club members go on the road to attend a national convention with other harmonica-lovers from all over the U.S. is year, the Society For the Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica (SPAH) convention will take place from Aug. 13-17 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Davies, who is a past president of SPAH, said he expects “non-stop

jamming.”

An invention from Germany catches fire By many accounts, the harmonica was invented in Germany in 1826 by instrument-maker Christian Buschmann. Also called a mouth harp or mouth organ, although it doesn’t sound much like either, the pocketsized instrument is played with a combination of blowing and ‘drawing’ (inhaling). e instruments are inexpensive and easy to learn. No ability to read music is required.

e new instrument became wildly popular. Soon Germany was dotted with harmonica factories. From 1900 to the 1920s, German harmonicas poured into the United States to meet the swelling demand.

Today the harmonica has multiplied into a crazy quilt of di erent models, large and small. e most familiar is the simple diatonic harmonica, which has 10 holes and usually plays in the key of C.  It has a folksy, bluesy sound — exemplied in the music of folk-rocker Bob Dylan, who famously termed it, “ e best-selling instrument in the world.” e larger chromatic harmonica — favored by artist Stevie Wonder — produces far more notes and chords, but is tougher to learn. It’s often used in jazz, classical and pop music.

Having too much fun

At a recent meeting of the Mile High Harmonica Club, a diverse group of male and female club members, aged 24 to 94, sported both diatonic and chromatic instruments. e joy of music-making was palpable. People sang along and applauded as various players stepped up to the open mic, performing numbers as disparate as Al Jolson’s 1921 hit, “April Showers,” and Led Zeppelin’s 1971 rock classic, “Stairway to Heaven.”

Taste of the West event showcases the best of Je erson County’s food and beverage businesses

e West Metro Chamber of Commerce’s annual Taste of the West took place on June 6 at the Foothills Fieldhouse in Denver. e event brought over 80 of Je co and Colorado’s food and beverage businesses, with a few other industries mixed in amongst those vendors.

According to Erin Acheson, vice president of the West Metro Chamber, there were 77 food, beverage and other businesses present at the Taste of the West. Acheson estimated the crowds to be more than 950 people.

Private chefs, microbrewers and even large chain businesses were represented at the Taste of the West. Each business served samples. ere were small plates of food, like little tiramisu cups from 240 Union Creative Grille, a Lakewood restaurant.

Each participant received a small cup upon entering the venue to use in sampling beverages.

Vendors like Sam Swartz, sales ambassador of Dirty Dill, a Denver beverage company, lled the complimentary cup with a “pickle shot” called a Dirty Dill pickle vodka shot. e 30% alcohol spirit was the talk of the event.

All the businesses also o ered swag, from stickers to cups and even a pizza cutter from the Comcast

Business and X nity booth. Some companies like Twin Peaks Colorado Mills from Lakewood, gave coupons for free and discounted items, redeemable at the establishment.

Twin Peaks o ered 20% o discounts, coupons for free mozzarella sticks, drink holders, key chains and more.

Non-food and beverage vendors also dotted the venue. Bayaud Enterprises a nonpro t that advocates for people with disabilities in overcoming barriers to employment, was on hand to promote the fall food and wine event Lakewood Food and Wine at Belmar Plaza, scheduled for Sept. 14. Bayaud o ered eventgoers some info and a silicon wine cup emblazoned with their name.

A highlight of the Taste of the West was the demonstrations on two stages. Private chef DeAndre Smith and his business Chef Cool Dre showed the crowd how to make a lighter, more elegant version of the traditional peach cobbler.

Austin Adamson of Ballmer Peak Distillery in Lakewood was among the companies that provided demonstrations.

e Taste of the West was not over after the doors closed that night. ere was still a vote by the eventgoers. Here are the winners:

Sun Jr., a ‘psych mountain rock’ experience at the Mile High Hoedown

If you yearn to fly back to the sounds of yesteryear, you will love soaring to new heights with Boulder’s own Sun Jr, appearing at the MILE HIGH HOEDOWN later this month! The band’s sound is a blend of psychedelia, cosmic cowboy and Americana with indie-folk influences.

Friends Nod Norkus (drums), Jim Heekin (guitar/singer), Matt Kubis (banjo/singer), Jon Schimek (pedal steel guitar), and Jeremiah Streets (keys/ bass/organ) launched the band in 2013. They practiced in the evenings in Jim’s basement (“The Bottoms”), where they have become a “band of brothers.”

Sun Jr. hit the stage with a style all their own and immediately made an impression. From a spot on the “Gentleman of the Road” tour in Salida with Mumford & Sons, Dawes and the Flaming Lips in 2015, they’ve grinded their way into a stellar act that you cannot miss.

During the 2020 COVID pandemic, the band leaned heavily into long basement jams, taking notes from the likes of Pink Floyd and late ’60s bands that played for art’s sake. They branched into livestreaming to reach out to more folks and have continued to do so.

“In February 2024, (Heekin) posted a TikTok video of our song ‘Buttercorn’ from a live performance at Dharma Farm

— and it went viral,” Norkus said. “The post garnered 2.3 million views and about 40,000 new fans.”

The post was the mega break that has opened more doors to some of Colorado’s best venues and a “second media wave” of the post expanded their reach even farther, he said.

“We started receiving invitations to play in California, Texas, and points beyond the U.S.,” Norkus said.

The band’s current goal is

mostly to ignore national invites and build an ardent local fan base. To stay connected, they are partnering with Chris Wright of Violet Recording to capture their Colorado live shows to share more broadly. Wright will also engineer a series of in-studio live recordings, possibly capturing two albums from this dual recording process.

Injuries related to rearms in Colorado racked up at least $8.4 million in medical bills in 2022, according to a recently released analysis.

e report, produced by the Center for Improving Value in Health Care, or CIVHC, is the rst of its kind to examine some of the economic impacts of rearm injuries. But it is in keeping with a growing e ort in Colorado to think of gunrelated harms as a health issue and to study them in the same way researchers might look at other public health challenges.

“It’s an important way to look at things,” said Dr. Emmy Betz, the director of the Firearm Injury Prevention Initiative at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, who was not involved in the new study. “It helps people think about another aspect of this speci cally beyond the deaths.”

In addition to the dollar amount, CIVHC also found some concerning trends within the data.

Between 2016 and 2022, the rate of medical claims for rearm-related injuries increased 53%. But it increased even more for injuries to kids: 120%.

Men were three times more likely than women to su er rearm injuries. And rural counties generally have higher rates of injury than urban ones.

Kristin Paulson, CIVHC’s president and CEO, said in a statement that the analysis shows “the critical need for continued focus on comprehensive public health, education, and community-tailored initiatives aimed at addressing and preventing rearm violence.”

Betz said the analysis ultimately is a snapshot of just one slice of gunrelated harms. But even still Betz said medical claims data can provide valuable insight into the issues underlying gun injuries.

“It raises concerns for me about what is happening in those homes and why rearms are maybe not being locked up in those homes,” she said.

at question can help identify where public health campaigns — such as the state’s Let’s Talk Guns, Colorado campaign, which promotes gun safety and safe storage — could have an impact.

e idea of treating guns and the potential negative consequences associated with them as a public health issue is gaining momentum in Colorado. (Experts in the eld prefer the term rearm-related harms to the term gun violence because they believe the latter creates an impression that most injuries or deaths are due to assaults. Contrary to public perception, the large majority of rearm-related deaths in Colorado are suicides.)

Lawmakers in 2021 created the state O ce of Gun Violence Prevention, which provides data on rearms issues in the state and gives grants to communities and organizations looking to tackle gunrelated problems. CU’s Firearm Injury Prevention Initiative conducts research. And earlier this spring, a

new program launched to try to better connect the pieces.

e Firearm-Related Harm and Violence Prevention Program Ofce, which is housed in the Trailhead Institute, hopes to work with organizations to help them examine gun-related issues in their communities and then apply for resources to address them.

“ is is an opportunity to move past ideologies and rhetoric,” said Jonathan McMillan, the program o ce’s director.

McMillan, who formerly led the state’s O ce of Gun Violence Prevention, was in Washington, D.C., last week for a meeting with the White House O ce of Gun Violence Prevention and other local violence-prevention programs — showing that interest in tackling the

health aspects of gun issues is not just a Colorado phenomenon. He said the goal of the public health work is not to take away guns or criticize those who own and value them. Rather, he said, it’s to help communities identify areas of concern — it may be suicides in one community or interpersonal violence in another — and then to work with those communities on speci c strategies to address the issues.

“It’s about helping communities speak more to what their needs are,” McMillan said.

Consumer Groups, Patients, & Providers Applaud Colorado Legislators for Holding Big PhRMA Accountable, Protecting State’s Prescription Drug Affordability Board

AARP Colorado, along with a broad coalition of consumer groups, patients, and medical providers celebrated the end of the 2024 legislative session after fending off coordinated efforts by drug manufacturers to undermine the Colorado Prescription Drug Affordability Board (PDAB), the state’s only tool to reign in out-ofcontrol drug costs. As a rare cancer patient currently in remission, I’m deeply grateful for the broad coalition that fought to ensure that the voices of patients were heard.

The Colorado State Senate stood alongside advocates to defeat SB24-060, which sought to prevent the PDAB from reviewing the costs of, and setting limits on, hundreds of the most high-cost and commonly-prescribed prescription medications. In fact, it would have exempted 67% (more than 400 medications) of the approximately 600 drugs eligible for review by Colorado’s PDAB because they have some form of orphan drug designation – including many of the most expensive and most commonly prescribed medications in the state. The bill was part of a national strategy being pushed by pharmaceutical companies

to make it impossible for PDABs across the country to bring down the cost of prescription medications. Lawmakers laid the bill over indefinitely on April 15th, sending a strong message: Colorado refuses to let the pharmaceutical industry continue to put profits over patients, especially as the PDAB is just beginning its critical work. In addition, 115 medical professionals across Colorado released a letter opposing Senate Bill 60.

Big PhRMA continues to use the defeat of SB24-060 and the ongoing work of the PDAB to stoke fear in patients of rare diseases. Unfortunately, these very patients are among the most harmed by out-of-control drug costs and deserve access to affordable, lifesaving drugs through Colorado’s Prescription Drug Affordability Board. To ensure these critical voices are front and center, SB24203 “Prescription Drug Board Consider Rare Disease Council’’ legislation was introduced on April 8th by Senators Ginal and Kirkmeyer, and Representatives Harstook and Ortiz. The legislation passed with strong bipartisan support and will ensure greater

stakeholder engagement from the rare disease community in the work of Colorado’s Prescription Drug Affordability Board without exempting any medications.

We thank the lawmakers who championed these efforts and refused to let Big PhRMA play games with Colorado’s Prescription Drug Affordability Board. This work is more important than ever, with 1-in-3 Coloradans struggling to afford the medications they need to stay healthy. AARP has a vested interest in ensuring drug prices are affordable for all. Over 80% of adults over 50 take at least one prescription medication regularly, with many older adults skipping or stretching their life-saving medication because of the high cost. Older Coloradans are the highest utilizers of prescription drugs in the state and many of our own members have expressed their frustration and concerns with rising health care costs.

Adults 65 and older tend to spend the most on health care; and skyrocketing drug prices are driving up health care costs for all. This economic pressure piles on top of the emotional, physical, and psychological toll that patients

face on an almost daily basis. The Colorado Legislature created the PDAB with the passage of SB 21-175. Since 2023, the PDAB has reviewed three medications, and determined one of those medications, Enbrel, to be unaffordable for Coloradans. The PDAB is slated to complete affordability reviews on two additional medications in June.

Je erson County primary election voter guide

e Je erson County Clerk and Recorder sent out the ballots for the 2024 Colorado State Primary Elections in early June. Here’s what you need to know about the primaries and to ensure that your vote is counted.

The turnout depends on you

According to the Je erson County Clerk and Recorder’s election factsheet, ballots went out to approximately 415,000 eligible voters in Je erson County. In the last State Primary Elections in 2022, 32.8% of county voters mailed in a ballot or voted at a county voting center. What’s on the ballot?

According to the county clerk and recorder’s factsheet, this ballot will contain federal, state and county candidates. In Je erson County, many of the primary candidates are running uncontested. In addition to the usual U.S. congress seats and state legislature seats, the primary ballots will have candidates for other races including:

• Colorado State Board of Education

• Gilpin and Je erson County District Attorney

• University of Colorado Board of

Regents

• Je erson County Commissioners

e county clerk’s o ce notes that the primary ballots will not have “issue questions, ballot initiatives, amendments, or propositions” according to the election fact sheet.

Races to watch

District 30, which covers Lakewood and part of Wheat Ridge, has an uncontested primary for the Republicans, but Democrat voters have a choice between candidates Rebekah Stewart or Kyra deGruy Kennedy.

State representative primary races are uncontested for districts 23 (Wheat Ridge), 24 (Arvada), 25 (Evergreen and Conifer) and 27 (Golden), meaning that there is only one Democrat and one Republican candidate for each — except for the District 23 race, which has no Republican candidate.

Primary races for the District Attorney 1st Judicial District and Jefferson County Commissioner districts 1 and 2 are uncontested. e District Attorney 1st Judicial District race has no Republican candidate.

Why are some ballots di erent?

According to the clerk’s voting factsheet, the primary ballots are di erent for voters of di erent parties. For example, Republicans get one ballot with only Republican candidates. e factsheet notes that Una liated voters will receive two ballots. However, they must choose ONE ballot to ll in and return.

“Choose only one party’s primary to vote in. Voting in both will disqualify your vote,” the county clerk’s note warned.

Where does voting happen in Je co?

ere are a few ways to cast a ballot in Je co. ere are 37 ballot drop boxes in Je erson County. e boxes are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Two additional ballot boxes are open during business hours. e locations of these boxes are on VoteJe co.com.

Vote in person at ve voting centers that open June 17. According to the county clerk and recorder’s o ce, the voting centers will have Spanish-language ballots and ADAaccessible ballot marking devices. Take a look at the sample ballots in Spanish on VoteJe co.com.

What is the timeline for the state primaries’ election ballots?

e Je co clerk and recorder’s ofce released the following timeline for the State Primary Elections:

• June 3: ballots are mailed locally and drop boxes open

• June 17: in-person voting centers (VSPCs: Voter Service and Polling Centers) open

• June 25: Election Day

• July 3: is the deadline for curing ballots and for military/overseas votes to be counted

• July 5: the deadline for completing the election audit

• July 17: the deadline for election results to be certi ed

According to the clerk’s factsheet on Je co elections, “curing ballots” involves verifying the identities of voters whose signatures do not match their voter registration cards. ese votes can’t be counted until the “voter’s identity and eligibility are veri ed,” the factsheet stated.

e clerk’s o ce wants voters to know that ballots must be mailed by June 17. is ensures that the ballots are received by June 25. According to the clerk, ballots received after June 25 will not be counted. e postmark doesn’t matter. If you can’t mail your ballot on or before June 17, go to a voting center.

There are bonuses for voting early Je co Clerk & Recorder Amanda Gonzalez wants voters to know that there are some bonuses for voting early.

“Returning your ballot early avoids having an accident or emergency prevent you from voting, gives you more time to correct any issues if your ballot isn’t accepted, and also ensures faster, more complete results on election night. It also removes you from campaign phone calls and email lists,” the clerk’s voting factsheet states.

Jackson Campbell played his own composition, a lively piece reminiscent of Irish folk music. A quartet made up of Gayla Michelin, Shawn Mass, Lee Taylor and Roger Bale played “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Wayne Di y put his heart into “Elk River Blues,” a folk song about a man watching as a new dam submerges his ancestral home.

Between numbers, Lloyd Williams showed o harmonica covers his daughter had knitted for him. Charter club member, Lee Taylor, told an anecdote about his childhood, when his little brother was exiled to a closet for bad behavior. Inside the closet, the boy discovered a harmonica and started playing it. After he’d served his time, he refused to come out.

“He was having too much fun!” Taylor said.

Scott Paulding serves as the club’s president and harmonica enthusiast-in-chief.

“I try to be a welcomer for every-

one who walks into club meetings and encourage people to play music,” he said.

Paulding believes the harmonica he acquired as a teenager had a big impact.

“I de nitely was not musical,” he said, “but learning the harmonica rewired my brain.”

He may be on to something.

“Playing an instrument may be one of the best ways to help keep the brain healthy,” said a recent post on the University of Pennsylvania’s medical school website. It reported that studies have found bene ts for kids — but also gains in memory and cognitive function for people older than 60.

Learning is a key purpose of the club, Paulding said, whether it’s teaching beginners or helping experienced players improve their technique. Experience has taught him that without instruction, it’s di cult to progress.

Breathing easier with the harmonica Paulding also teaches technique when he visits e Harmonicats, a group of pulmonary rehab patients at University of Colorado Medical

Center’s Anschutz campus in Aurora. Some patients attend the biweekly meetings with oxygen tanks in tow. All are coping with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) or other respiratory disorders.

Dean Hutto, a Mile High Harmonica Club member, played with the Harmonicats as he recovered from a double lung transplant.

“I would go home after playing the harmonica and feel like I could breathe deeper,” he said. “Everyone in the group swears by it.”

He said the group plays a lot of “camp re songs,” including “Michael Row Your Boat Ashore,” and the Gaelic barn dance, “Skip to My Lou.”

“It’s easier to learn if you already know the song,” he explained. e pursed lip breathing required to play the harmonica helps relieve shortness of breath, according to UC Health’s Pulmonary Rehab Supervisor Alexandra Worl.

“When they’re practicing harmonica during the week, they are creating muscle and integrating it into activities of daily life,” Worl said. ese musical gatherings also

address another pressing problem. Many COPD su erers isolate themselves because they dread the breathlessness that accompanies simple exertion, such as standing up, walking or climbing stairs.

Worl says the Harmonicats biweekly meetings are an important tool in ghting this isolation.

“It improves quality of life and human connection,” she said. “And the old familiar songs can remind you of your youth. It brings back amazing memories.”

Back at the harmonica club meeting, Myron Wilson took his turn at open mic with a heartfelt rendition of “America the Beautiful.”

He regarded his two, large chromatic harmonicas with something akin to adoration.

“Here I am, 60 years old,” he said, “and I’m still learning new things.” e Mile High Harmonica Club welcomes new members, from beginners to experts. Colorado School of Mines is among the Top 10 NCAA Division II programs for the fth consecutive year.

Mines took sixth place in the 2023-24 LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup standings, which ranks overall athletics department performance among NCAA Division II schools. Points are awarded based on how

well a given team performed in the postseason, with each athletics department allowed to combine points from up to 15 teams.

Grand Valley State won the 202324 NCAA Division II LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup with 983 points, followed by the University of Indianapolis and West Texas A&M. Mines had the top nish among RMAC members. Colorado Mesa was the next-closest in 10th place, while Adams State came in 14th.

e Orediggers racked up 315 for its fall sports teams’ achievements.

e football and men’s cross country teams were both national runners-up, while the women’s cross country team nished third at the national championships.

In February and March, Orediggers from all seven winter sports teams quali ed for their national competitions. Mines was the only NCAA Division II program to do so, according to Mines Athletics, and the Orediggers subsequently notched another 317.5 points toward the LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup standings.

The Alps meet the Rockies at summit on snowmelt

Colorado, with its dramatic mountain landscapes, deep winter snow and thriving ski industry, has been referred to as the “Switzerland of America.” Gov. Jared Polis even once used the phrase.

e similarities were are more than just a name. A delegation of experts from Switzerland visited Boulder in early June for a summit on melting snow and ice. Mountain guides, climate scientists, artists and policymakers shared notes on the impacts of climate change on high-mountain landscapes.

ose experts painted a fairly bleak picture as they described the role of warming trends in reshaping the snow and ice that de ne the Rockies and Alps.

Perhaps the most striking accounts of those changes came from mountain guides, who lead groups of climbers and adventurers on trips through the peaks. Angela Hawse, a Ridgway-based guide and vice president of the International Federation of Mountain Guides Association, shared videos of icefalls and rockfalls from around the world, showing how large pieces of mountains are falling apart as the ice and snow that holds them together disappears.

“We can learn from experts from another domain,” he said, “How they tackle the issue in order to be inspired. is is 360 degree inspiration that we can generate.”
