Democrats suffer whiplash in vote tallies 1936 was last strong year for Adams County Republicans By Vic Vela
vvela@colorado communitymedia.com A lot of things have happened since 1936 — Hawaii and Alaska becoming states and the inventions of canned beer, color television and the Slinky, just to name a few. But prior to this month, Republicans doing really well in Adams County elections is something that had not happened in 78 years. “Before the Depression and the Franklin Roosevelt era, Adams County up until that point been a Republican county,” said longtime Republican Adams County politico and historian Bob Briggs. “The whole aspect of the Depression changed that and the Democrats have been in control since then.” Here’s a fact that really puts the election results from Nov. 4 into perspective: Until recently, a Chicago Cubs World Series appearance had been a more modernday historical moment than there being a majority of Republicans holding elected offices in Adams County.
That salt-in-the-wound reality is something county Democrats continue to ponder now that the votes from Nov. 4 have all been counted from an election where many Democrats lost races few thought were even possible to lose. “I never saw Democratic candidates out there doing anything, any sort of campaigning, and they took their wins for granted,” said Adams County Republican Party Chairman Gary Mikes. “We passed them up and by the time they realized it, they were done.” The results from Nov. 4 are striking: • Republican Beth MartinezHumenik defeated former Democratic state Rep. Judy Solano for an open state Senate seat that had been held by term-limited Democrat Lois Tochtrop. The win gave Republicans a one-seat majority in the chamber. • Democratic state Rep. Jenise May — who sits on the Legislature’s important Joint Budget Committee and who easily won her seat in 2012 — lost to JoAnn Windholz. What’s more stunning about May’s defeat is that Democrats considered her seat so safe, they pegged her to head an opera-
tion aimed at getting more Democrats elected to the House. • Democratic Attorney General candidate Don Quick lost Adams County by four points to opponent Cynthia Coffman, who won the election. Quick is the former district attorney for Adams County. • Of the 32,222 Adams County voters who cast ballots in the 6th Congressional District race, they overwhelmingly supported Republican Congressman Mike Coffman over Andrew Romanoff by a margin of more than 11 points. • Republican candidates won two county commission seats and, for the first time since 1936, they will hold the offices of sheriff, assessor, treasurer and clerk and recorder at the same time. All of this in a county where Democrats outnumber Republicans by more than 26,000 registered voters, about a 10-point advantage. And Adams is a county that is right up a Democratic candidate’s alley — a diverse, blue-collar county where many middle-class workers and families reside. “Anytime you have losses like
that it’s going to be alarming, sure,” said state Democratic Party Chairman Rick Palacio. “We’ll take a long look at the numbers and we’ll figure out where the next steps are.” But gleeful Republicans think they know exactly where Democrats went wrong in Adams County. “The ruling Democratic elites forgot about the middle class, forgot about the people who work for a living, and that’s the only way to explain what happened in Adams County,” said Republican Frank McNulty, a former state speaker of the House of Representatives.
Voters frustrated
Current House Speaker Mark Ferrandino, who is term-limited and who will not be returning to the House in January, said what happened in Adams County earlier this month “surprised” him, but that he also understands the challenges the county faces and why voters may have taken out their frustration on Democrats. “You look at the issues around Adams County, there’s a lot of working-class families,” he said. “The state is in an economic recovery, but it hasn’t impacted some communities across this state.” Ferrandino said Democrats
have been effective in recent years in passing bills at the Legislature that would help middle-class families like those that live in Adams County. “We made higher education more affordable, child care assistance for families ...,” he said. “Those things need to be even more of a priority now.” State Rep. Joe Salazar of Thornton survived the Republican wave, but barely. Salazar’s seat was widely considered to be safe, yet he only managed to eke out a 221vote win over Republican Carol Beckler in a race that wasn’t decided until several days after Election Day. “I didn’t think it was going to be this close,” Salazar said. “I became nervous in September that I needed to do more in my district and we ran a very strong ground campaign, and thank God I did. I didn’t take my voters for granted.” Salazar doesn’t think the vote results were a referendum on Democratic policies, because he believes Democrats “have very good ground to stand on,” when it comes to legislative accomplishments that help middle-class families. Rather, Salazar chalks up the Vote continues on Page 18

Johnny Walker of Westminster looks and acts like you think a modern-day prospector would. Wearing a weathered hat, and sprinkling expressions like “I’ll be plum-tickled” in his dialogue, Walker is full of knowledge of the trade. “I’m the fourth generation, and my grandson is quite the pan shaker himself,” he said with a grin, leaning over to pet his beagle, Hunter. He added he can trace his family’s arrival to Colorado from Missouri to 1870. “This was all Spanish territory at that time,” he said. His ancestors traveled to the Rocky Mountain area to trap beavers and pan for gold. Walker owns Clear Creek Prospecting Supply, 1006 W. 104th Ave. in Northglenn, and he teach others all about the hobby he has done his entire life. “Sixty years worth of experience doing all this, what am I going to do, take it to the grave?” he said. And there’s lots of gold to be found in the Denver area. “Every single drainage ditch in Denver has gold in it,” Walker said, adding more gold is showing up recently. “Since the flood last year, people walk in with two to three times than you would expect normal to be. It brought down a lot of gold; it washed down the hills.” Mike Clark of Arvada stopped by the prospecting store to show Walker some of his findings from the past two weeks of panning. He estimated that between May and October, he found about $250 worth of gold. Clark took up panning about 18 months ago after he retired as

According to Coloradoprospector.com, the state has more than 774 different types of minerals. “Rock identification in Colorado is a little more than challenging,” Walker said. Career expo educates county students By Ashley Reimers
areimers@colorado communitymedia.com As the job market continues to become more competitive, it’s never too early to begin thinking about a career. Adams 12 eighth-grade students were lucky enough to begin that thought process during the Adams County Commissioners’ Career expo on Nov. 18 at the Denver Mart. Representatives from a variety of fields, including agriculture, hospitality, law enforcement and architecture educated students on the ins and out of their career paths. For one particular eighth grader Kylie Schnoor, from Stargate School, her focus during the expo was learning about careers she’s unfamiliar with, like law. “I want to get an understanding of careers I’m not interested in by talking to people who are already in them,” she said. “By talking to different people and exploring new options I can learn about careers I haven’t considered before.” Schnoor also took time to chat with professionals in her top career picks like writing, the culinary arts and zoology. She
said the career expo was a great opportunity for her to learn more about a potential career before heading to high school. “The career expo is important because I’ll have to start taking college level classes in high school that will lead me into the college I need with the right major,” she said. “If I have an idea of what I want to do, then I’ll already go into high school thinking about what classes to take, what extracurricular activities to do and how many hours of community service I’ll need. If you start with a plan, then you’re never behind the eight ball.” This is the eleventh year the Adams County commissioners have hosted the career expo, which is designed to inspire eighth grade students in the county to begin thinking about their future education and career goals. Over 5,500 students in the county from 11 districts attended and 87 career vendors donated their time during the expo. “There are some incredibly talented young people in Adams County and their talents are as diverse as their dreams, “said commissioner Charles Tedesco. “We’re happy to provide this forum for these students so they can begin shaping their path forward.”

Light the holiday with a hometown tradition By Michelle Boyer
Mkboyer8@gmail.com Tis’ the season for a hometown tradition with Santa, Mrs. Claus and the elves as they arrive Dec. 5 at the Holiday Lighting Ceremony at the Northglenn Recreation Center, 11801 Community Center Drive. This year’s event will start at 5:30 p.m. with the lighting ceremony in front of the recreation center and continue until 8:30 p.m. with fun activities for the entire family. “Each year Santa and Mrs. Claus ar-
rive in a unique way and it’s a surprise to the community,” Neighborhood specialist Jennette Sanchez said. “In past years, this has included an escort by Star Wars Storm Troopers, motorcycles, antique cars and a horse and buggy. “Northglenn invites families to join as they commence the holiday season with this fun and free event.” This year’s activities will expand to not only the theater and gym, but also the swimming pool area of the recreation center. There will be many activities for kids following the lighting ceremony. WOW Bubbles; otherwise known as the “giant
hamster balls,” that people get inside of and roll around on the water will be available. Inflatables, balloon twisters, games, arts and crafts will be just some of the activities in the gym. Before the event, starting at 1 p.m. the Northglenn Senior Organization will sponsor its annual bake sale in the lobby of the recreation center, until all good are sold out. The Northglenn Community Foundation will sell slices of pizza as a fundraiser for the Utility Assistance Program. “The city will collect canned goods, new toys and gently used clothing for those
who need it in our community,” she said. “There will be large bins in the lobby of the recreation center for drop-off.” At the senior center, pictures will take place with Santa while Mrs. Claus will sing and engage the kids in joining along. Cookies and cider will also be available while waiting for Santa. There will also be a concert in the theater during the event. People who want to volunteer can contact Jeanette Sanchez at 303-450-8935 or jsanchez@northglenn.org. “Since there’ll be lots of kids at the event volunteers must pass a background check,” she said.

Staff recommends two-year charter renewal By Ashley Reimers
areimers@colorado communitymedia.com During the Nov. 19 school board meeting, Adams 12 District staff recommended a two-year charter renewal for Westgate Community School, a small innovation school designed to meet the needs of gifted students who are at-risk and underachieving in more traditional schools. If approved by the board during a meeting in January, the charter period would be extended from July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2017. Staff also recommended six conditions upon approval: Westgate’s Unified Improvement Plan shall be submitted each year as required by the deadline determined by the district. Westgate shall notify the district in
writing of material additions, deletions, or modifications to its curriculum, assessment or education program delivery systems anticipated to be offered the next school year by May 15 of each year as required by the charter school contract. Westgate shall provide to the district a comprehensive High School Program Guide and shall demonstrate the ability to produce accurate transcripts from Infinite Campus by July 1, 2015. The program guide and transcript sample shall be in a format as distributed to other educational agencies. Prior to the first day of each school year, Westgate, located in Thornton, shall have entered into the Infinite Campus system all required data including but not limited to, course masters and student schedules and have the capability of recording attendance via Infinite Campus. Student grades shall be entered into Infinite Campus
within three days of the end of each grading period. Westgate shall be in compliance with all aspects of the Adams 12 Settlement Agreement with the United States Department of Justice for provision of educational services for English Language Learners. Westgate’s monthly financial statements shall at no time reflect a negative General Fund-fund balance or non-compliance with Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) requirements. Westgate’s initial application for a kindergarten through eighth grade school was authorized in January 2009. The charter was later renewed in November 2011 to include high school grades. The current charter expires June 30, 2015. During the meeting Westgate executive director Chris Johnston requested a fiveyear renewal. She said the school plans to focus on raising enrollment, strengthening
governance, assuring condition compliance by working collaboratively with Adams 12 and making a commitment to work to resolve any challenge the school faces. “We have given a record of grace under duress while facing challenges and we have a desire to stay in Adams 12 and serve this community,” Johnston said. “We respectfully ask for a five-year renewal.” Before the January decision, Johnston and district staff plan to have more discussions regarding the approval conditions. “Staff believes it’s a generous recommendation so suggest a two-year renewal,” said charter liaison Patti Gilmour. “The two years will allow Westgate to demonstrate that they can be fiscally viable and also demonstrate that their students can be successful.”
Audit finds child services wanting By Vic Vela
vvela@coloradocommunitymedia.com A state audit cites several areas of concern over the handling of cases within the state’s child welfare system. The 260-page report lays out dozens of recommended fixes to “deficiencies” that were found in samplings of cases that were screened by the Department of Human Services during the 2013 fiscal year. The findings included problems with the screening process of potential child abuse cases as well as a lack of proper state supervision over child welfare services handled by individual counties. “The audit findings collectively suggest a need for the department to improve its supervision of the child welfare system to promote strong and consistent practices by the counties to help protect children,” reads the report, which was authored by the State Auditor’s Office. However, DHS Executive Director Reg-
gie Bicha strongly pushed back against some areas of the report during a Nov. 12 legislative committee hearing. “Child welfare practice is extremely complex,” he told the panel. The report gathers information from samplings of the 70,400 reported cases of abuse and neglect that were screened by the department in 2013. The audit finds that in some cases, “it was unclear” whether counties followed state-mandated rules when determining whether cases warrant further investigation by the department. Case workers’ timeliness of initial contact with families also was a concern. In a small number of cases sampled, the audit found that “caseworkers did not interview or observe children involved in child welfare referrals within county-assigned response times.” Other samples showed some risk assessment documents had incorrect information about families and their histories,

while other reports failed to identify child safety issues. Bicha told lawmakers that his department agrees with many of the recommendations spelled out in the audit and that many of the findings dealt with issues the agency had already been addressing. Bicha also stressed that caseworkers do their best to assess each situation properly and said that mandating “one-size fits all” regulations does a disservice to the public and to each individual child’s needs. Bicha particularly took issue with concerns that counties responded in contradictory or unreliable ways to auditors’ findings that state guidelines were not being followed properly. “Having a difference of opinion, rethinking initial conclusions, or debating interpretation of law, policy and practice in a world of very limited resources should not be grounds for questioning the department’s testimonial evidence or validity or our reliability,” Bicha said.
The department has put in place a handful of reforms over the last couple of years after news reports found troubling handlings of cases involving children who died due to abuse and neglect. Among the reforms set to launch in January will be the creation of a statewide child abuse and neglect hotline that was approved by the Legislature in 2013. The audit was requested by lawmakers, including Sen. Linda Newell, D-Littleton, who is known to craft legislation focused on the protection of children. Newell said through an emailed statement that the report “reaffirms how delicate and complex the child protection system is.” Newell said she will follow up on the findings and that additional legislation may be taken up when lawmakers reconvene in January. “We need to continue to work with the state department and counties on improving the system,” she said.

Bouncing back from drought years Colorado is recovering from a serious four-year drought in the state’s primer upland bird regions. But thanks to the expanding public access areas now open to the public by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Division (CPW), there are opportunities. The pheasant season that opened Nov. 8 continues to the last day of January. The quail season ends either Jan. 4 or Jan. 31 depending the eastern county. The CPW has leased over 215,000 acres under its Walk-in area specifically for upland bird habitat in Eastern Colorado. A good starting point is to study the recent 2014-15 Eastern Plains Upland Forecast which offers helpful information
about habitat conditions and bird numbers. The drought years of 2010-11-12-13 made a significant mark on bird hatching and survival we see today. The 2014 Eastern Colorado pheasant and quail surveys were down approximately 66-percent since 2012 and 44-percent from 2013. Surveys showed the lowest bird populations during this period since 2003. CPW staff uses a variety of survey techniques and field observations to get a fix on bird production, numbers and survival. Call counts, crow counts, road side summer brood
counts, moisture and food offering and mid-summer roadside bird numbers. The Eastern Plains Upland Forecast tells us that Northeast Colorado counties (Yuma, Phillips, Sedgwick, Logan, Washington, Morgan and eastern Weld Counties) are hosting slightly improved pheasant numbers than 2013. While encouraging, conditions are spotty, due to the record levels Hellbusch continues on Page 12

Tax laws undermine legalization of pot Lack of deductions may prove crippling to stores By Katie Kuntz
Rocky Mountain PBS I-News The Nov. 4 elections meant sweeping victories for the marijuana industry nationally, but in Colorado, the outcome was more of a mixed bag. Alaska, Oregon and the District of Columbia legalized recreational marijuana, while only some communities in Colorado chose to expand businesses. Voters in Manitou Springs and Federal Heights passed initiatives allowing retail marijuana shops to operate, while voters in Palmer Lake and Ramah in El Paso County, and Lakewood voted against recreational sales. Nearly 100 new businesses received their licenses from Colorado regulators on Oct. 1. Yet many of these new, voterapproved pot shops may find it difficult to survive a drug war-era tax code that already threatens many established businesses. Under the code, the federal government stands to make more money from the sale of marijuana than those legally selling it. And that could be enough to shut down many shops. “It’s almost like they want us to fail,” said Mitch Woolhiser, while walking through his store called Northern Lights Natural Rx in Edgewater. “Everything I do is aimed at keeping us in business because if I don’t, then (the feds) win. And I’m not going to let them win.” Woolhiser believes the federal government is actively seeking to undermine his business.
Woolhiser first opened shop in 2010, selling medical marijuana. He started selling recreational pot when it became legal in Colorado at the start of this year. Last year, his business didn’t earn a profit. Had he been selling anything but cannabis, he would not have owed federal income tax, as he ended up with a loss. Instead, he ended up paying close to $20,000 to the IRS because of a 1980s tax code called 280E. “I believe that the feds extend the drug war through 280E,” said Jordan Cornelius, a Denver accountant who has worked with Woolhiser and many other marijuana companies in Colorado. “If (the federal government) can’t put them out of business legally when voters are mandating these businesses to move forward, it’s very easy to put them out of business financially.” Whether the government is actively enforcing the punitive code in an effort to undermine the legal marijuana business remains unclear. The Justice Department, Drug Enforcement Administration and Internal Revenue Service declined comment. However, an IRS spokesperson provided a 2010 letter written in response to several lawmakers in Colorado, Massachusetts, Arizona and California who had asked the IRS to stop enforcing the tax code in states that legalized the sale of medical marijuana. The IRS letter pointed out that only Congress could make that change. “The result you seek would require the Congress to amend either the Internal Revenue Code or the Controlled Substance Act,” the IRS letter said. Though multiple members of Congress received the letter, there has been little effort to amend the

Instead, the federal government collects taxes on what it considers an illegal drug because the Supreme Court ruled more than 50 years ago that everyone has to pay taxes — even those who make their money illegally. Then, in 1982, Congress amended the U.S. tax code to include 280E, which says businesses selling a Schedule I or II drug — like marijuana, heroin, methamphetamine or cocaine — cannot deduct all of their regular business expenses. The rule means that the “costs of the product,” like the soil and fertilizer used to grow plants, are deductible. But the “costs of selling,” like advertising, rent and utilities — even salaries for employees — are not deductible.

“If it made sense, I would feel better about following it,” said Rob Corry, Denver attorney and marijuana advocate. “I don’t see why production is deductible — they are still producing marijuana!” But that quirk in the tax code has helped many cannabis companies stay in business in Colorado. Medical marijuana stores were required to grow their own product, and therefore had some associated deductions. As of Oct. 1, cannabis companies are no longer required to grow the products they sell. But without growing, many may soon find that they will have very few, if any, business deductions when filing federal taxes next April. “A lot of people think that the marijuana industry is just a li-
cense to print money,” said Taylor West, deputy director of the National Cannabis Industry Association. “And it’s just not the case.” West works for an association of more than 750 cannabis-related businesses across the United States, and says that 280E results in her clients paying more than 70 percent of their profits in taxes to the federal government. Sometimes, the rates are far higher than that. “A lot of times, instead of paying a tax rate that should be 30 to 40 percent, they are paying rates between 80 or 90 percent,” said Cornelius, the accountant. “I even have a client right now that is paying more than 100 percent Pot continues on Page 7

effective tax rate.” Mac Clouse, a University of Denver finance professor who studies the industry, said the status quo creates an inherent and perhaps fatal conflict. “The problem is that we have passed
laws that allowed these medical marijuana and recreational marijuana companies to do business,” Clouse said. “But we have all these other laws, tax laws, federal laws that make it incredibly difficult if not utterly impossible to survive.”
EDUCATION NEWS IN A HURRY Board votes to extend superintendent’s contract
The School District 27J Board of Education unanimously voted this evening during its regular board meeting to extend the contract of 27J Superintendent Chris Fiedler. The new agreement, effective July 1, 2015, extends Fiedler’s contract with the district through June 30, 2017. Dr. Fiedler began his work as School District 27J superintendent on July 1, 2012. His current two-year contract extension, approved by the board in October 2013, was set to expire June 30, 2016. However, the 27J Board of Education has made it standard practice to negotiate a contract extension with the superintendent well in advance of the expiring agreement. The contract extension stipulates that Fiedler will continue to earn his current salary of $199,455 during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years. The extension followed a detailed evaluation process completed by Board of Education members. In their evaluation of Fiedler, board members noted the district’s progress under Fiedler toward academic achievement goals set by the

board. This includes, for the first time, School District 27J meeting a board goal that high school ACT scores increase by 0.5 percent annually. The board also praised Fiedler’s continued commitment toward increasing community engagement. “He has created several community groups such as the Quality Schools Initiative as well as Engage 27J, which offer opportunities for community members to become more involved and more informed,” said Board of Education President Patrick Day. “Dr. Fiedler has become more active and visible to community businesses and organizations.” Prior to being hired as superintendent, Fiedler served as an elementary and high school principal in the district. “I want to thank the Board of Education for their faith and commitment to my leadership of this district and for supporting me as we work to make this district a great place for our students, families and staff,” Dr. Fiedler said. “I’m extremely blessed to work in this district and lead an incredibly talented group of teachers and staff members committed to the success of our students.”

Thankful for living in the USA Today, most of us gathered around the table whether it was a dining room table that accommodates 6-12 people or more, a kitchen table which seats 4-6 or perhaps a card table which provides seating for 4. Regardless of the number around the table,we all enjoyed the traditional feast on Thanksgiving Day among family/ friends and to give thanks for our abundance and many blessings. Many of us had the traditional meal of turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes with gravy, rolls, relishes, green beans, cranberry sauce and of course pumpkin pie. Please put a dollop of whipped cream on the top of the pie!! However, not everyone had the benefit of such a meal without the help of caring people.
Helping others Thanks to many thoughtful people and organizations, homeless people enjoyed a Thanksgiving meal. People who could not afford the tab on such a meal as described above were treated to a meal like what we enjoyed. Thank you FISH, Have a Heart, the Salvation Army, Denver Rescue Mission, DENUM, churches around the metro area and many more like-minded organizations shut-ins enjoyed a hot meal thanks to Meals-on-Wheels and similar organizations. One thing we Americans are known for is our generosity to help less fortunate folks.
the world. We are truly blessed.
The Thanksgiving holiday is a good time to reflect on and express our appreciation of just how good we have it. We have comfortable homes which are heated and provide a buffer from the weather. We have warm clothing to keep us comfortable when out in the elements with the latest synthetic materials in coats, gloves and hats. We have cars, vans and SUV’s to take us wherever we want to go. And believe it or not, gasoline is cheap compared to many countries. (We just returned from Turkey where the equivalent of a U.S. gallon of gas cost between $8-$9). Food is plentiful with more choices than we know what to do with. We have an economy which is doing better than most in the United States or the world. While not at its prime, it still is providing jobs to people. Many of us are well educated with public schools for all. Our health care is one of the best although one of the most expensive. We enjoy the electronics that we are so hooked on. Life is good. Our standard of living is one of the highest in
So, on this “Black Friday” after Thanksgiving when material goods tend to be foremost in most people’s minds thanks to the retail mantra, I would hope that we don’t forget what we were thankful for the day before. With that thankful feeling, may we share with others less fortunate? Not just on Thanksgiving or Christmas, but throughout the year. While the DOW Jones Industrial index is at an all-time high and corporations are announcing hefty profits and dividends, there is so much poverty and want in America. Look at the increasing number of homeless families and children. Look at the ever increasing demands put upon food banks like FISH, Growing Home and the Senior Hub. Look at the number of families on welfare who attempt to enjoy a merger existence. We are a nation of plenty. As we launch into the Christmas and Hanukkah seasons, might we use the rule of the tithe in our holiday shopping? Take 10 percent or more of what you plan to spend on family and friends for gifts and contribute it to worthy causes which assist others less fortunate. You and I will make our community a better place. Bill Christopher is a former Westminster city manager and RTD board member.

Hindsight hard on Udall campaign As dust settles, analysis of election begins By Vic Vela
vvela@coloradocommunitymedia.com Arm-chair quarterbacking doesn’t only apply to football fans – political junkies were doing it last week following the results of Election Day 2014. While many heaped praise on the two big winners from last week – Republican Senator-elect Cory Gardner and Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper – others scrutinized the campaigns of their opponents. Perhaps no campaign has received as much scrutiny for its loss than that of Democratic Sen, Mark Udall, who became the first incumbent senator to lose in Colorado since 1978. Udall focused much of his campaign on women’s issues in an attempt to define Gardner as an out-of-touch extremist who supports personhood efforts and who wants to limit the amount of control women have over their bodies. For months, Udall television ads attacked Gardner on this issue – perhaps to the detriment of his own campaign. “Voters saw through the negative, downright dishonest line of attack that Mark Udall and his supporters chose to base his campaign on,” said state Republican Party Chairman Ryan Call. “Some of the ads at the end almost became a parody
of themselves.” Independent political analyst Eric Sondermann thinks the Udall campaign did itself a disservice by spending so much time attacking Gardner over women’s issues and not spending enough time talking about his own biography. “Where was Udall the mountain climber?” Sondermann said, referring to Udall being a passionate outdoors lover, something that could have resonated with Coloradans. Worse, Sondermann said, was that Udall didn’t seem to be having a good time. “He just seemed an unhappy, even dour kind of warrior,” Sondermann said. “He did not let his personality come through. Either that or the years in Washington have worn him down.” “He just looked put upon while Gardner was the upbeat, youthful candidate.” Gardner had his own problems during the campaign. The Gardner narrative the Udall campaign was trying to paint was effective early on, which often put the congressman on the defensive on women’s issues during the debates. Gardner did not always handle those questions well, particularly when he was trying to explain the difference between his support of a federal personhood bill and his opposition of a state effort. He also seemed vulnerable on issues like immigration and climate change.
But none of those issues stuck to the affable Gardner, who managed to smile and keep his high-octane energy throughout the campaign. Gardner benefited from a Republican wave that swept Republicans into offices across the nation. And because of that, Gardner absolutely had to win this race, Sondermann said. “The Cory Gardner win at least let Republicans live to fight another day in Colorado,” he said. “Had that seat not been won, they would have been a largely moribund party for years to come.” Sondermann said Republicans still have issues to deal with going forward, such as inner-party divisions and a need to work on wooing minority voters, especially Latinos. But the win keeps them going here for a while. “If you don’t win with your best candidate in the best year after decade-long losing streak, that party could have spiraled downward,” Sondermann said. Not all was bad for Democrats following the results from Election Day. Hickenlooper – who was trailing in his re-election bid to former Congressman Bob Beauprez for much of the night – ended up winning his race by a slightly larger percentage than that of Gardner’s. In spite of the national wave and relentless attacks on his leadership, Hickenlooper won while many other Democratic gubernatorial candidates across the country did not.
“Hickenlooper had just enough crossover appeal by virtue of not being such a down-the-line party loyalist that he was able to survive this kind of a wave,” Sondermann said. Meanwhile, Beauprez may have run too cautious of a campaign throughout the summer — perhaps piling on too heavily in the final weeks, Sondermann said. Toward the end of the campaign, Beauprez hit Hickenlooper hard on public safety issues and received criticism for invoking the murder of Department of Correction chief Tom Clements into the campaign. “Beauprez fumbled the ball at the end,” Sondermann said. “His closing message was completely off-kilter, deciding to close the campaign with this weird message about crime and mayhem running rampant on the streets if Hickenlooper wins.” State Democratic Party Chairman Rick Palacio said Colorado bucked the national trend with Hickenlooper’s victory. “I wouldn’t characteristic what happened in Colorado as part of a GOP wave,” Palacio said. “We fared quite a bit better than other states. John Hickenlooper won quite handily given everything else that was going on.” But Call thinks a lot of good came out of the Nov. 4 results for his party. “Republicans made historic gains around the country and in Colorado, reversing a trend we have been seeing in our state over the last number of years,” Call said.

KBCO disc is tradition for holidays
Miners Alley hosts song cycle for the holidays By Clarke Reader
creader@coloradocommunitymedia.com One of the hallmarks of the holidays is the music — the way it weaves story and lyric, melody and harmony to move and inspire the listener. For their holiday production, Miners Alley Playhouse is eschewing the typical fare for a show that features four actors, three understudies and a group of musicians who guide audiences through a series of vignettes, each with a different musical message. The theater, 1224 Washington Ave. in Golden, is hosting “Songs For A New World” through Dec. 21. Performances are Thursdays Dec. 4, 11 and 18 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 16 and Dec. 7, at 6 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 30, Dec. 14 and 21, at 2:00 p.m. “New World,” written by Jason Robert Brown, is less a play than a song cycle, according to directors Brenda Billings and Mitch Samu. They said there are no spoken words outside the songs, which don’t constitute a cohesive story, but rather the story of a moment. “Most of these songs are about that moment in time when it seems like everything is perfect, and then it all falls apart,” Billings said. “They tell the story of difficult circumstances and how people deal with it.” The musical styles range from pop, gospel,
holiday and jazz in a series of songs all connected by the theme of that crucial moment. Some of the most wellknown numbers include “SurabayaSanta,” “Christmas Lullaby” and “Stars and the Moon.” Samu plays the piano throughout the show and said he has worked hard with the four actors to be able to tell their stories through the music. “I give them direction on how they should relate their story through their lyrics,” he said. “Almost anyone can sing, but if I don’t feel the story, it doesn’t matter.” The actors go through a variety of characters, from a young man who has determined that basketball is his ticket out of the ghetto to a woman whose dream of marrying rich nabs her the man of her dreams and a soulless marriage. “I don’t think the play gets done a lot because you need four powerhouse singers with the range to do all the different fields and genres,” Samu said. “It’s not a recital — it’s a bunch of stories.” Billings said this is one of the most difficult shows she’s ever directed, but the experimental nature of it has made it a lot of fun. When it comes to the sets, she said they’re making use of blank-slate platforms to project the scenery onto. This allows the show to use a variety of scenes without having to move anything.
Radio station 97.3 KBCO will give Colorado 18 more reasons to love KBCO Studio C on Dec. 6 with the release of its annual charity CD featuring 18 songs recorded live on the air from the Denver/ Boulder radio station’s performance studio. Each year, 97.3 KBCO compiles a select few of these recordings on the annual KBCO Studio C CD release. The limited-edition CD will be available beginning at 8 a.m. Dec. 6 at all Colorado Whole Foods Market locations. There will be a limit of two CDs per person and the collection will be sold for $12. Traditionally the annual CD release sells out in about one day, with eager KBCO Studio C fans lining up before sunrise. Proceeds from the sale of the KBCO Studio C Volume 26 CD will benefit the Food Bank of the Rockies and Boulder County AIDS Project.
Holiday box office opens
For the first time, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts is opening a holiday box office in an off-premises storefront on First Avenue between Detroit and Clayton streets in Cherry Creek North. The temporary Cherry Creek pop-up store will do much more than sell tickets and gift certificates (with all handling fees waived). There will be a stage for free performances, free activities for kids and information about the wide variety of activities offered. The 4,000-square-foot space opened Nov. 21 and runs through Dec. 23. “We want to reinforce the idea that there are great things happening at the DCPA every day,” said Creative Director Rob Silk.

While “New World” isn’t a traditional holiday show, what makes it a perfect fit for the time of year is the reliance on music to connect with people. “It’s all about the notion of being moved by music,” Billings said. “It
will be an evening of really heartfelt music and stories that will make you laugh, cry and bring you into the spirit of the season.” For more information call 303-935-3044 or visit minersalley.com.

November 27, 2014 appreciates the independent companies that offer an authentic experience,” said David Kubena, director of North America for Espresso Americano. “Although this is our first store in the U.S., we have been in business for 80 years, our farm is still family-run and we grow 80 percent of our coffee, which we then roast ourselves.” The coffee shop also will offer a limited food menu with everything made fresh. For breakfast, customers can choose from a variety of breakfast burritos and quiche, while for lunch the selections will include several salads and homemade paninis. Fresh baked goods and dessert items will be available throughout the day as well.

of precipitation in some locations and minimal rain and snow in others. Both habitat and food sources vary as well from location to location. Hunting will be good on one section of land and a few miles either way may produce very few birds. The South Platte River drainage and State Wildlife Areas in Morgan, Washington, Logan and Sedgwick Counties show minimal quail numbers, while improved cover and food supply for pheasants. Counties) are looking better for habitat and bird numbers than other eastern counties. Increase in precipitation and greater number of sprinkler irrigation systems account for more optimism. Hunters will find some exception to this were summer hail storms damaged crops. Extreme southeast Colorado (Baca and Prowers counties) drought more severely impacted pheasant numbers. Selected area habitat recovery has favored the quail population with help from late quail hatches. CPW offer some suggestions during the Eastern Colorado region hunts. Sportsmen are urged to be sensitive to fire dangers when smoking or using camp fires. The CRP acreages are declining due to contracts expiring in 2014 and 2015 and program reductions
by the Federal government. Corn and other crop harvest are not completed, so be sensitive to farming operations underway. Some of Kiowa County farmland accommodates light (snow) goose hunting and has less cover and habitat for pheasants or quail. To supplement the Forecast information go on line to learn more about Colorado pheasant and quail at http:// cpw.state.co.us/thingstodo/Pages/ Pheasant-Hunting.aspx. In addition there are over 215,000 walk-in access acres to hunt, 300 state wildlife areas and 42 state parks, all available to the public and sportsmen. When it comes to health, it’s never too early to learn the importance of eating right and exercising. To promote this message, the St. Anthony North Health Campus partnered with Adams 12 Five Star Schools to provide a Dr. Seuss book called “Oh the Things You Can Do That Are Good for You! All About Staying Healthy” to all kindergarteners teaching them the importance of a healthy lifestyle. “We believe staying healthy starts at home and is reinforced in classrooms, which is why we partnered with Adams 12 Five Star Schools to help educate both children and parents on health and wellness in the communities we serve,” said Carole Peet, CEO of St. Anthony North Hospital and Health Campus. On Nov. 6 kindergartens at Silver Creek Elementary School in Thornton received their books and a visit from Peet, Superintendent Chris Gdowski, Thornton mayor Heidi Williams, Westminster mayor Herb Atchison, school board president Mark Clark and school board director Kathy Plomer who encouraged the youngsters to exercise their brains in reading. Colorado Railroad Museum presents new Christmas production By Amy Woodward
awoodward@coloradocommunitymedia.com
OVEREATERS ANONYMOUS meets at 7 p.m. Mondays at North Metro Church, 12505 Colorado Blvd. in Thornton.
T
he sound of a silver sleigh bell ringing is heard by those who believe in the magic of Christmas. Do you hear it? For those who have grown out of the childish notion — prepare to be inspired. The Colorado Railroad Museum is presenting a new event that brings to life one of the most popular Christmas stories in modern times; The Polar Express. The museum, which hosts many events throughout the year, has taken this newly installed Christmas production to new heights of imagination by featuring an interactive train ride that pulls visitors into the adventure. “This is a completely new event for us because it’s more of a play,” said Donald Tallman, executive director of the Colorado Railroad Museum. “We are reproducing ‘The Polar Express’ experience.” Unlike other seasonal events at the museum, The Polar Express Train Ride will start at dusk with two additional show times afterward. This allows for a realistic reenactment in which the young protagonist in the 1985 publication of The Polar Express, boards the magical train late at night and finds himself on an enchanted ride to the North Pole to meet the man he was told didn’t exist anymore — Santa Claus. “The ‘Polar Express’ is a perennial favorite,” said Julianne Rist, assistant director of public service for Jefferson County Public Libraries. “It is one of those Christmas stories that is read throughout the year, and always peaks during the holiday season.” Guests who arrive at the museum will be escorted outside to the train yard where one of the museum’s historical train cars, acting as The Polar Express, sits quietly. An actor playing the conductor from the book steps out from the train car and yells; All aboard! A boy dressed in pajamas and a robe appears and the characters act out one of the opening scenes from the book. Once the boy enters the train, the conductor addresses the audience and exclaims All Aboard! — the cue for ticket holders to board the train. Once on board the train, actors play out scenes from the book, complete with dancing and singing chefs who serve hot chocolate and a cookie to passengers. The book is then read aloud and guests are brought to the “North Pole” where Santa appears and gives everyone a silver bell. “You actually get to experience the magic of the train,” said Missy Moore, choreographer for the Polar Express Train Ride. This will be the first time the Polar Express experience will be in Denver, Tallman said with the closest production of this type in Durango. Tickets are on sale, and more than a

A CELEBRATED BOOK In 1986, The Polar Express received the Randolph Caldecott Medal, which is awarded annually to artists for the most distinguished American picture book for Children. That same year, The Polar Express landed on the New York Times bestseller list. Since that time, 7 million copies have been sold across the globe, according to the book’s website. In 2004, the movie release of the book featured a celebrity voice-over from Tom Hanks and grossed $319 million in the box office worldwide. The Jefferson County Public Library offers The Polar Express in several formats including print, audio and DVD. Audio books are checked out for three weeks at a time, and the DVD has been checked out 88 times so far this year.

Foundation seeks to honor vets By Crystal Anderson
canderson@colorado communitymedia.com Seven tolls resonate for the fallen. In May, the Honor Bell will ring for the first time, symbolizing honor, dignity and respect for Colorado’s fallen veterans. “Honors are rituals, and military honors that are given is a ritual where they do things in a certain manner,” said Frank Griggs, founder of the Honor Bell Foundation. “What we wanted to do is come up with a way of honoring veterans beyond just taps, beyond just presenting the flag — a final toll, in honor of this individual.” A nonprofit organization, the Honor Bell Foundation seeks to recognize deceased veterans with a tolling ceremony at their funeral. After the presentation of the flag to the next of kin, the 35-second ceremony will consist of seven tolls, each with their own meaning: response, service, protection, defense, sacrifice, suffering and loss of life. “Honor, respect and dignity are really at the hallmark of what we’re doing,” said Michelle Mallin, the foundation’s director of communications. “This is really honoring our veterans at their final moments.” The bell ceremony, performed upon request by the next of kin, will be avail-
able for any veteran’s funeral. Griggs said preference would be given to combat vets killed in action, and first responders. Along with the ceremony, the organization is also providing additional opportunities in the classroom for students to see a replica of the bell, and learn about the history, sacrifices and achievements Americans have made through their service in the military. “The education opportunity we have with the bell is really fantastic,” Mallin said. “It gives us the opportunity to take the bell to different classrooms to show students … it’s just a special way to honor our fallen veterans.” Currently, the organization is seeking volunteer veterans and first responders to be a part of the “Guardians of the Bell,” who guard, protect and sound the bell during ceremonies, as well as benefactors who wish to be a part of the organization. “To me, you know, I look back and I should have died in Vietnam, I was six inches away from losing my life,” Griggs said. “There’s got to be a reason for whatever we do in life and I feel, at my age now, I’m leaving a legacy that will honor all veterans.” For more information, visit www.honorbell.org or call 720-282-9182.

SALOME’S STARS FOR THE WEEK OF NOV 24, 2014
ARIES (Mar 21 to Apr 19) While it seems that chaos is taking over, you get everything back to normal, even if it means being more than a little assertive with some people. Expect to hear more job-related news soon. TAURUS (Apr 20 to May 20) Expect to be able to move ahead with your workplace plans now that you have a good idea of what you might have to face. You also can anticipate a welcome change on the home front. GEMINI (May 21 to Jun 20) A quieter period settles in, giving you a chance to catch your breath, as well as allowing for more time to handle some important family matters. The arts dominate this weekend. Enjoy them. CANCER (Jun 21 to Jul 22) The frustrations of last week have pretty much played themselves out. You should find things going more smoothly, especially with those all-important personal matters. LEO (Jul 23 to Aug 22) Once again, you find a creative way to resolve a pesky problem in short order. However, a matter involving a possible breach of confidence might need a bit more time to check out. VIRGO (Aug 23 to Sept 22) Reuniting with an old friend could lead to the sharing of some great new experiences. But be careful you don’t find yourself once again being super-critical or overly judgmental. LIBRA (Sept 23 to Oct 22) You should be seeing some positive results following your move toward repairing that unraveling relationship. There might be some setbacks, but staying with it ultimately pays off. SCORPIO (Oct 23 to Nov 21) Encouraging a friendlier environment in the home could go a long way to help dissipate anger and resolve problems, especially those affecting children. It won’t be easy, but you can do it. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 to Dec 21) A recent act of kindness is beginning to show some unexpected (but very welcome) results. On another note, expect to hear more about a possible move to another locale. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 to Jan 19) The good news is that the sure-footed Goat can rely on his or her skill to get around obstacles in the workplace. The notso-good news is that new impediments could turn up later. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 to Feb 18) A change of pace is welcome but also confusing. Before you make decisions one way or another, be sure you know precisely what it is you’re being asked to do. PISCES (Feb 19 to Mar 20) Don’t fret if you don’t get the gratitude you think you’re owed for doing a nice thing for someone. There might be a good reason for that. In any event, what’s important is that you did it. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of making the sort of wise decisions that ultimately shed new light on dark situations. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

losses to a national Republican wave that resulted in Democrats losing the majority of statewide races, including U.S. Sen. Mark Udall, who was defeated by Republican Congressman Cory Gardner. “Cory Gardner ran one hell of a campaign,” Salazar said. “He spent an enormous amount of resources in my House district. I had the Cory Gardner war machine coming at me.”
Not buying claims But Republicans think it’s awfully convenient for Democrats to chalk up the bad results to a one-year wave and think that everything will go back to normal in a couple of years. “They didn’t like what had been happening,” MartinezHumenik said of Adams County voters who supported her candidacy. “They feel the loss of income in their houses. They keep hearing unemployment is down, but they’re not seeing it in their own families.” State Republican Party Chairman Ryan Call also thinks that corruption cases involving elected county Democrats over the last few years also weighed heavily on frustrated voters’ minds. “Adams County rejected corruption and mismanagement in Democratic majorities,” Call said. “It’s pretty darn encouraging when we see the contrast in reform-minded Republicans running against Democrats at the county level.” To be sure, not all news was bad for Democrats following the Nov. 4 results. Statewide Democratic candidates running for secretary of state and treasurer performed better here than in many other parts of the state. And Adams voters supported Gov. John Hickenlooper and Udall. Still, the results were not good for Democrats overall. But, while county Republicans may be feeling good now, 2016 could be a whole other ballgame. More Democratic voters — especially minorities — cast ballots during a presidential year than in a midterm election. And will newly elected county Republicans hold on to their seats four years from now, without the potential benefit of a national Republican wave? And, as Mikes is fully aware, Republicans start each election in Adams County “as 10-point underdogs.” And Briggs said it’s too early to know what the results from earlier this month will mean in the long run. “Is it a one-time blip or is it a trend?” he said. “Only time will tell that.”

He likes to show people the proper way to prospect — which includes protecting native plants. “We don’t do it like in the 1800s when they ripped down mountains,” he said. said the book donation from the St. Anthony North Health Campus, which opens next March at 144th Avenue and I-25 in Westminster, is a perfect fit for the district’s reading at home initiative. “This school year we’ve encouraged parents to have their children read or be read to for at least 20 minutes every night,” Gdowski said. “The generous book donation supports our commitment to improve literacy district-wide.” Kim Walsh, executive director of schools, is grateful for the partnership with the St. Anthony North Health Campus. She said it means a lot for a business to step up and see the value in reading and education, especially by providing books students get to keep. “It can be a challenge for families financially to get books for their kids, especially for families with multiple children,” she said. “And what’s great about the Dr. Seuss book is that it comes with a book mark with questions that parents can ask their child after he or she reads it.”
