importance of eating right and exercising. To promote this message, the St. Anthony North Health Campus partnered with Adams 12 Five Star Schools to provide a Dr. Seuss book called “Oh the Things You Can Do That Are Good for You! All About Staying Healthy” to all kindergarteners teaching them the importance of a healthy lifestyle. “We believe staying healthy starts at home and is reinforced in classrooms, which is why we partnered with Adams 12 Five Star Schools to help educate both children and parents on health and wellness in the communities we serve,” said Carole Peet, CEO of St. Anthony North Hospital and Health Campus. On Nov. 6 kindergartens at Silver Creek Elementary School

in Thornton received their books and a visit from Peet, Superintendent Chris Gdowski, Thornton mayor Heidi Williams, Westminster mayor Herb Atchison, school board president Mark Clark and school board director Kathy Plomer who encouraged the youngsters to exercise their brains in reading. With literacy as a primary focus in the district, Gdowski said the book donation from the St. Anthony North Health Campus, which opens next March at 144th Avenue and I-25 in Westminster, is a perfect fit for the district’s reading at home initiative. “This school year we’ve encouraged parents to have their children read or be read to for at least 20 minutes every

night,” Gdowski said. “The generous book donation supports our commitment to improve literacy district-wide.” Kim Walsh, executive director of schools, is grateful for the partnership with the St. Anthony North Health Campus. She said it means a lot for a business to step up and see the value in reading and education, especially by providing books students get to keep. “It can be a challenge for families financially to get books for their kids, especially for families with multiple children,” she said. “And what’s great about the Dr. Seuss book is that it comes with a book mark with questions that parents can ask their child after he or she reads it.”

Republican edges appointed Zenzinger By Crystal Anderson canderson@colorado communitymedia.com Republican Laura Woods captured Senate District 19 in a tight race. Woods beat appointed incumbent Rachel Zenzinger by a mere 1.1 percent on election night. With such a narrow margin, and some ballots still being counted, both candidates declined to comment on the election outcome last week. “I’m disappointed with the results as they appear right now,” said former Senate District 19 Sen. Evie Hudak on election night. “It isn’t over … there’s still a chance, but the initial results are disappointing.” But Woods initial lead of around 700 votes held up, even as the last votes were counted last week. Zenzinger, a Democrat, was appointed to the SD-19 seat in December following the res-

ignation of Hudak, who was facing a recall petition effort spearheaded by Woods. Zenzinger spent her time at the Statehouse working to bring forth eight bills focusing on what she dubbed the “Three E’s,” described as education, the elderly and economics. Prior to her term in the senate, Zenzinger served Woods on the Arvada City Council and several local boards and commissions. “We knew from the beginning that this race was going to be a tight one, because of the party-affiliated composition of the district,” Zenzinger said. “We were able to run a very smooth, competitive and clean campaign, and now we find ourselves waiting for the final votes to be counted.” Moving forward, Woods told the Arvada Press in an earlier interview, she wants to focus on listening to the needs of the

district while bringing back integrity to the statehouse. During the campaign, Woods said she wanted to reduce spending, increase protection around personal and individual property rights as well as promote a more business-friendly environment. “I will be a voice for liberty, I will be a voice of common sense, and that I will listen to the citizens of Senate District 19 and work for them,” she said in an earlier interview. District 19 encompasses the cities of Arvada and Westminster. Woods, a Colorado native, jumped into the race following dissatisfaction with Hudak’s support of gun control measures. In 2013, she spearheaded two petition drives to recall Hudak. During her campaign, Woods said she’s an advocate for pro-life, small business and smaller government. Outside of the campaign, Woods owns a court reporting business in Denver. She lives in Arvada with her husband.

There were eight contested races for Adams County offices and the majority of voters chose Republicans to fill all but two seats. “This is historic,” said Jan Pawlowski, the Republican who won the District 5 county commissioner seat. “There hasn’t been a majority of Republicans in elected offices in Adams County since 1940 and I’m proud to be a part of it.” Voters chose the Republican candidates for sheriff, clerk and recorder, assessor, treasurer and two county commissioner seats. McIntosh Only Democrats Monica Broncucia-Jordan and Steve O’Dorisio won their election bids for coroner and a District 4 commissioner, respectively. The newly elected officials will be sworn Odorisio in Jan. 13.

New sheriff in town

The majority of voters in Adams County chose Mike McIntosh as their new sheriff. McIntosh garnered 51.52 percent (62,632) of the votes; while his oppoPawlowski nent Democrat Rick Reigenborn received 48.47 percent (58,905) of the votes. “I am honored to have been elected as the 17th sheriff of Adams County and want to thank our citizens for Hansen their trust and support,” McIntosh said. “The journey ahead is exciting and I look forward to serving Adams County in this new era with the Sheriff’s Office.” He replaces term-limited Sheriff Doug Darr. McIntosh has been with Adams County Sheriff’s Office for more than 26 years and has served in every division of the agency, most recently the division chief of administrative services. He has lived in Adams County for almost 40 years and graduated from Brighton High School. He served in the U.S. Navy before joining the Sheriff’s Office in 1988.

The first ever District 4 and District 5 commissioners were elected. Pawloski and Democrat Steve O’Dorisio will be sworn-in as the first commissioners to fill the newly created board seats. Voters approved in 2012 a ballot measure to increase the number of County continues on Page 16

Mayor pro tem looks to new state seat after election victory By Ashley Reimers

areimers@colorado communitymedia.com Most people in Westminster know Faith Winter as the mayor pro tem. But after the 2014 election, the fifth generation Coloradan will soon be known as the House District 35 state representative. According the unofficial election results, Winter, a Winter Democrat, had earned 55 percent of the votes over her Republican opponent Mike Melvin by Friday afternoon. “I’m really excited about this new opportunity,” she said. “It’s humbling when you go through a 17-month interview process and people decide to hire you.” Winter is currently serving her final term on Westminster city council, she was originally elected in 2007, and then reelected in 2011. During her time on council, she focused on tackling issues like public safety, economic development, parks and open

space and renewable energy. As a state representative, Winter said she hopes to find ways to make renewable energy available to more people in Colorado to eventually lower people’s energy bills. Boosting the Colorado economy will also be a focus. “I really want to make sure we have a work force that will improve our economy and support good jobs,” Winter said. “We have a shortage of skilled labor in Colorado. The average welder is 53 years old, so we really need to figure out how to bridge that gap and right now we don’t have the skilled labor to do that.” Spending seven years on city council, Winter admits she’ll miss the local connection to residents and seeing council decisions come to fruition. “On city council you build things,” she said. “The city improved the pool at the rec center and I take my kids there and I get to see the improvement that I was a part of. On council you get to see your decisions in a very tangible way, and I’ll miss that.” Winter is thankful for the support she had during her campaign and says she is prepared to take the next step at the state level.

NEWS IN A HURRY Vacancy on city council With Faith Winter’s election to the office of state representative, a vacancy on Westminster city council will exist when she is sworn into office on Jan. 7, 2015. The city council is accepting applications to fill that vacancy. The deadline to apply is 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3. The interactive application with instructions is available on the city’s website at www.cityofwestminster.us. Anyone interested in serving on city council must have been a resident of Westminster

for at least 12 months, is a United States citizen and registered to vote, and will remain a resident of the city throughout the term of office (November 2015), is eligible to apply. After the application deadline, interviews with city council will be scheduled. It is expected the city council will vote to fill the vacancy at the council meeting of Jan. 12, 2015. Questions about the application can be directed to city clerk Linda Yeager at 303-658-2161 or via email at lyeager@cityofwestminster.us.

“This campaign was never about me, it was about the community,” she said. “And

I never could have accomplished this victory without all the support I had.”

Griffin returns as clerk and recorder Rosier reelected to county commission By Amy Woodward

awoodward@colorado communitymedia.com Faye Griffin, county commissioner for District 1, was elected to serve as Jeffco Clerk and Recorder; a change initiated by Griffin stemmed from a desire to finish her nearly 40 years with Jeffco in the office in which she first began a career. “I am going to retire sometime, I just don’t know when,” Griffin said in September. “I am also torn by leaving this office because I enjoy being commissioner.”

Griffin did not comment on her win Tuesday Night. In the past, she has been criticized for her habit of leaving office early with critics saying it provides a way for her fellow party members to gain access to elected office. “I hate to think it’s a manipulation of the system,” Griffin said in response to the criticism. “I thought, OK, I started my career in clerk and recorder’s office; I’ll end my career in clerk and recorder.” Only halfway into her second term as county commissioner, now that she is elected as clerk and recorder, Griffin’s replacement will be decided by a Republican vacancy committee. Griffin was elected twice as clerk and recorder from 1998 to 2006 and then ran

for county treasurer which she won for a four-year term. Two years into that term she left the position and was elected as county commissioner where Republican Tim Kauffman was selected to fill her remaining term as treasurer. The Jeffco race for county commissioner produced knowledgeable candidates including incumbent Don Rosier and newcomers John Flerlage and Greg Standley. Rosier won the race by more than 7 percent. He was optimistic about the uncertified results and said he hopes to move on for a second term. “I just feel very humbled by the number of individuals that voted for me a second time,” he said. In August, Rosier stated that although

he can be abrasive at times, he finds the job as county commissioner a privilege he takes seriously. “I have the highest and best interest of all residents,” Rosier said. “I’m here for them — I’m not here for me.” Rosier’s Democratic opponent John Flerlage admits defeat and stated he already called Rosier to congratulate him. “It looks like the Democrats are getting killed,” Flerlage said. “It’s over.” Flerlage has been active in Jefferson County’s political scene for over a decade, serving at the precinct level and as treasurer for House District 28. He is more known for his run for congress in 2010 in Colorado’s 6th District, which went to Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman.

D50 ballot measures fail By Ashley Reimers

areimers@coloradocommunitymedia. com For a second year, voters in Adams County School District 50 shot down ballot measures that would have made various improvements in the district and for the students. Although election results aren’t official yet, 53 percent of the voters voted against 3C, a $2.5 million mill levy override and 58 percent voted against 3D, a $20 million bond. At this time last year, the district was dealing with the aftermath of a failed $5.25 million mill levy override, which resulted in the cut of 60 positions. Now District 50 is tasked with figuring out how to make up the revenue loss in the next budget. If 3C would have passed, the money would have been used in in expanding and upgrading vocational training, expanding STEM education, keeping qualified teachers and staff, funding arts, music and theater and providing enough money to minimize future cuts. “Before the election, I began working with staff to develop a budget plan to move forward in case we were unsuccessful,” said Superintendent Pam Swanson. “Last year we had to cut about $3.8 million for our budget and now we’ll have to make more cuts.” The failure of the bond leaves District 50 with maintenance issues in various schools, the need for security improvements and accepting that fact that five elementary schools will most likely have to wait much longer for air conditioning. Swanson said the district will have to take stock of what the district is capable of doing in a longer period of time. The district is also aggressively seeking grant funding to help with some of the projects. Although a loss is hard to swallow, Swanson doesn’t believe the negative response to the ballot measures was due to a

District 50 Superintendent Pamela Swanson and former superintendent Micheal Massorotti talk education while waiting for election results last week at Ciancio’s restaurant in Westminster. Photo by Mikkel Kelly lack of support of education from the voters. Families in the district would have had to pay an additional $5 per month based on $100,000 home, which Swanson says can be tough for some. “We’re asking very low income families to tax themselves and if we were fully funded from the state we would not have

to ask,” she said. “I really think our funding system in Colorado is broken and not meeting our needs in terms of equating funding from the state to schools.” For Swanson, and the rest of the district, there’s not time to sulk. She’s determined to continue the momentum the district has gained academically over the

past few years, and be a voice for staff and students. “We have to remain strong and be vocal about what we believe the state funding issues are,” she said. “We face a new reality, whatever that is. But we will be here for our kids every day and will do the very best job we can.”

Voters elect to retain ed board incumbent By Crystal Anderson

canderson @coloradocommunitymedia.com Jefferson County voters opted for consistency, electing to keep incumbent board member Jane Goff on the State Board of Education. “I am pleased with the turnout,” Goff said. “I think it’s a great reminder that we all have some work to do.” As the election results rolled in Nov. 4, Goff retained a 5 percent lead over opponent Laura Boggs with 53.42 percent or 136,292 votes. Goff noted her opponent’s results and said Goff she’s ready to narrow her focus and move forward in the education race. Boggs served on the Jeffco school board from 2009 to 2013. “We have to keep talking,” Goff said. “I am equally interested in moving some things along in the area of early childhood and high school opportunities for kids.”

Elected to the state board in 2008, Goff has worked to implement policies around the state’s new standards, the Colorado Academic Standards, accountability, having balanced assessments and transparency. She’s served on several boards and committees including, the State Advisory Committee for Gifted and Talented, the Colorado State Accountability Network. Prior to sitting on the board, Goff was a Jefferson County School District teacher for 34 years. “We really need to keep working to make sure that our pre-graduates are really ready to look at a path, feel secure for where they want to go and that the students have more of a voice in their education.” Boggs said she was running to see more attention statewide on academic achievement, local control, choice and student data protection. A mother of two public school students and daughter of an educator, Boggs passion for education is clear. Boggs could not be reached for comment.

Conflicting signals Who says elected officials are always responsive to the public, consistent and vote for “the better good?” I don’t think that is true with at least some of them. I saw it many times during my career in city management. It happens at all levels of government and when it happens it is both irritating and disheartening. In our democratic system, we should expect our elected officials to be accountable, responsive, dependable and transparent in their conduct. They should not act or behave above the rest of us; after all we put them in office in the first place. As far as consistency goes, those of us of who follow elected officials and their “politics” know that consistency is an elusive trait or value with some of them.

They refused to respond

Recently, I made a direct inquiry in writing to three of the four Westminster City Council members who support collective bargaining for the firefighters. The question was relevant to see how they think when it comes to deciding an important policy question. The question was to determine if each of them thought there was merit in getting the public’s opinion on the collective bargaining question via a professional conducted public opinion poll before taking action. I had previously asked Faith Winter the same question and she had indicated that “she would have to think about it.” However, Alberto Garcia, Emma Pinter and Anita Seitz refused to respond to my question. Their silence was a loud response in my opinion. Do these three elected council

with the city’s goal of “Vibrant Neighborhoods in one Livable Community” with the action item being “Have strong community events and active civic engagement.” I guess we aren’t so “vibrant” after all.

Inconsistency

members plus Winter care what the public thinks? Perhaps they are not willing to take the risk of finding out what the public is thinking as the outcome might not support their position. The City Council commissions a Citizen’s Survey regularly to garner insight on basic services and a few timely issues, but won’t seek input on an important issue. Hmm. Any elected official owes the person asking the question a response — good, bad or indifferent.

On the one hand

Now, here comes the inconsistency in my opinion. A while back, these same four elected officials attempted to pass a city mandate on apartment owners and property managers to provide voter registration information to all new tenants. This function is the responsibility of the respective county clerks. The explanation from the foursome as to why they were motivated to push such an unusual municipal mandate was that they wanted more people to be able to vote and have a voice in Westminster City government. They said it was in keeping

So, on the one hand, these four are advocates for more voters and having them express their opinions, but on the other hand they are shutting voters out from deciding a pivotal policy question i.e., collective bargaining with the firefighters’ union which could lead to the police and public works employees unionizing. It simply does not reconcile. They are demonstrating a basic inconsistency which is politically convenient and expedient with the group which they are aligned. In the meantime, the city administration has been seeking an experienced attorney schooled in collective bargaining to draft an ordinance which would enable collective bargaining with the firefighters union. It remains to be seen what the outcome of negotiations might be between the city and the union once they commence. That is down the road. One possibility would be that the union rejects what the City Council is willing to offer and in turn forces the city to place the collective bargaining question in front of Westminster voters in 2015. Oh the irony! Bill Christopher is a former Westminster city manager and RTD board member.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

What do you do to stay in shape during the holidays? With the holiday season comes parties, rich foods and delicious desserts. It can sometimes be tough to keep the pounds off, so we asked people at the City Park Recreation Center in Westminster what they do to stay in shape during the holidays.

I walk in the pool against the current for 45 minutes four times a week and I’ve lost 34 pounds. Neil Minden

I don’t go to parties on an empty stomach and I always leave my potluck leftovers at the party. Jackie Bowers

I drink a lot of water, especially before, during and after meals. And when it comes to a buffet, I eat just one of each thing. Lisa Barcelona I do the same thing that I always do, which is walking 30 minutes a day and doing stretching for 30 minutes. Loretta Flom

The chatter after the storm Well, the voters have spoken. And you know what they said? They said “shut up. All of you!” Seriously, I’m starting to think the day after the election is my second favorite day of television all year long, right behind the first day of the NCAA basketball tournament — or maybe that day every Fall when NBC announces that this year’s attempt at resurrecting the career of one of their former stars has failed and they’ve cancelled the show (Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry/Bradley Whitford, Lisa Kudrow, Michael J Fox, Sean Hayes ... it’s just kinda comfortingly predictable). I would like to suggest that some smart politico should do a study asking “at what point do political ads stop making a difference — or have the opposite effect than their intent?” Because for me, this election season lasted about six weeks too long, and a lot of money was wasted. At any rate, the election has been dissected a lot, but I would like to suggest that the message the voters sent was more limited than the pundits are reading. Democrat pundits have been very busy trying to convince themselves that this

was really just a matter of not enough of the right people showing up to vote. I guess it doesn’t occur to them that maybe they didn’t show up because the last two years have proven to be disappointing and, perhaps, shaken their faith in the efficacy of government. Republican pundits, on the other hand, have been every busy gloating that the tsunami that overran the country last Tuesday is indicative of a massive shift in their direction. And, while the numbers do give some credence to that interpretation, I think the reality is a lot more pedestrian. Consider that, in the House of Representatives, more than 95-percent of the

seats stayed in the same hands. And yes, districts are so thoroughly gerrymandered now that competitive races are laughably rare (our own 6th district, which was supposed to be the closest race in the country, was, in the end, a cakewalk for the incumbent). But, even so, if things were so bad or one side’s message so compelling, there should have been some more movement. There wasn’t. What was truly remarkable was how little actual, affirmative vision for the future Republicans put forward, and they still won. It was a cautious strategy, and it worked pretty well, but it doesn’t really provide them much of a platform from which to govern. The voters didn’t vote *for* something, because they weren’t given something to vote for; and I don’t think they voted against the ideological direction of the Senate and the White House—it was only two years ago that they had a chance to vote on ideology, and they re-elected the President by a fairly comfortable margin. I think Americans are pretty tolerant of ideological differences, though they lose their patience when ideology dictates pri-

orities that are out of line with theirs (see: gun control, recalls). What they are not tolerant of, however, is incompetence. It was just eight years ago that the American public sent the same message to Washington in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and the deterioration of Iraq. Last week, with stagnant wages, near record low job force participation, the world falling apart, health care plans being cancelled by the thousands, and a President happier to be photographed on the golf course than in discussions with Congressional leaders, the perception of incompetence spawned a tidal wave. But, that’s nothing to gloat about. Republicans, whether in Congress, the state Senate, or the local school board, heed well the actual message: we’re watching, and your leash is short. Michael Alcorn is a teacher and writer who lives in Arvada with his wife and three children. His first novel, “The Accidental Christmas,” will be available on Nov. 2 at MichaelJAlcorn.com.

Finding the joy of living in each day The day my husband Bob died was the saddest day of my life. I feel as though life has no meaning. But in speaking with other widows and widowers they all say the pain will gradually lessen. Now I have total empathy for understanding what grief is all about. There are plenty of books dealing with grief and loss. However, in my little “Book of Good cheer” printed over 100 years ago, these words say it all. With the holidays coming it’s good to think joyous thoughts.

The Word

Today, whatever may annoy, The word for me is Joy, just simple joy: The joy of life; The joy of children and of wife;

The joy of bright, blue skies; The joy of rain; the glad surprise; Of twinkling stars that shine at night; The joy of winged things upon their flight; The joy of noon-day, and the tried True joyousness of eventide; The joy of labor, and of mirth; The joy or air, and sea, and earth – The countless joys that ever flow from Him Whose vast beneficence doth dim The lustrous light of day, And lavish gifts divine upon our way.

Whate’er there be of Sorrow I’ll put off till Tomorrow, And when Tomorrow comes, why then ‘Twill be Today and Joy again! — John Kendrick Bangs Stay well, stay involved and stay tuned... Writing for peace is global effort for students “Words have the power to spread awareness, hope, and inspiration to people who would have otherwise despaired.” Is this wisdom from Mahatma Gandhi? Albert Einstein? Martin Luther King, Jr.? No, these words are from Jordan Dalton, a 16-year-old high school student from Indiana, one of the 2013 winners of the Young Writers Contest conducted annually by the international organization Writing for Peace. Fort Collins-headquartered Writing for Peace is a now-global organization that began with a local Young Writer’s Contest in 2011, holding its first nationwide contest in 2012. By the 2014 contest, Writing for Peace has received submissions from students in 24 countries, including India, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, Great Britain, and the Philippines, as well as Vietnam, Pakistan, Malaysia, Macedonia, and the United Arab Emirates. Sponsorships from educational institutions such as Colgate University help produce, “DoveTales: An International Journal of the Arts,” which attracts literary submissions and student writing from around the world. I am honored to serve as a Board Member for this organization, and you may have read about Writing for Peace before in this space. We work to cultivate empathy through education and creative writing to develop a worldwide foundation of compassion. That’s one of the reasons I was deeply

gratified this year when 17-year-old Malala Yousefzai of Pakistan became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, sharing the award with Kailash Satyarthi of India. After a Taliban gunman boarded her school bus in 2012 and shot her in the head, Malala made a remarkable recovery and continues to advocate for girls’ rights, becoming one of the world’s most recognizable voices for both education and peace. Here at home, young people like Cassidy Cole of Denver are confident that they too can change the world with their words. Cassidy, an 8th grade student when she took third place in the 2014 Young Writers Contest fiction category, says she uses her empathy as a compass, “wishing to understand a bewildering world.” Nneoma Ike-Njoku, then 18 and a second-place finisher in 2013, describes her writing as an idea that “becomes a daughter cell, actively dividing into legion.”

LETTER TO THE EDITOR In response to the full page ad for the organization Catholics for Choice that ran the week of Oct. 20: As a “cradle Catholic,” I am very concerned that readers of this paper might assume this organization represents mainstream Catholicism. It most assuredly does not. You cannot be a member of the Roman Catholic community and support Pro Choice. This statement has been

issued by our bishops and pastors locally. How can anyone ignore the “rights” of the innocent human being in utero by focusing solely on a woman’s right to do what she wants with her body? The developing child is not part of a mother’s body. As Christians, we pray for a conversion of heart in all those who support “choice.” Diane Shea Highlands Ranch

Baby on way for actress from Boulder Actress Jessica Biel, who moved to Boulder as a child and grew up there, and her superstar husband, Justin Timberlake, are expecting their first child, according to a story in Us Weekly magazine. According to the story, “Right now they are just enjoying the news for themselves,” one pal tells Us of the “Blunderer” actress, 32, and Timberlake, 33, who dated on and off for five years before getting engaged in January 2012. “They just want a happy baby.” Biel and Timberlake celebrated their two-year wedding anniversary in October. “It’s weird because it feels like almost nothing has changed, yet something that you can’t really describe, or something that isn’t tangible, has changed,” Biel told Ellen DeGeneres of married life after returning from her honeymoon in 2012. “It just feels incredible.” Read more: www.usmagazine.com/ celebrity-moms/news/jessica-biel-ispregnant-expecting-first-child-with-justin-timberlake-2014511#ixzz3IJfIY6Gd.

Colorado Railroad Museum presents new Christmas production By Amy Woodward

he sound of a silver sleigh bell ringing is heard by those who believe in the magic of Christmas. Do you hear it? For those who have grown out of the childish notion — prepare to be inspired. The Colorado Railroad Museum is presenting a new event that brings to life one of the most popular Christmas stories in modern times; The Polar Express. The museum, which hosts many events throughout the year, has taken this newly installed Christmas production to new heights of imagination by featuring an interactive train ride that pulls visitors into the adventure. “This is a completely new event for us because it’s more of a play,” said Donald Tallman, executive director of the Colorado Railroad Museum. “We are reproducing ‘The Polar Express’ experience.” Unlike other seasonal events at the museum, The Polar Express Train Ride will start at dusk with two additional show times afterward. This allows for a realistic reenactment in which the young protagonist in the 1985 publication of The Polar Express, boards the magical train late at night and finds himself on an enchanted ride to the North Pole to meet the man he was told didn’t exist anymore — Santa Claus. “The ‘Polar Express’ is a perennial favorite,” said Julianne Rist, assistant director of public service for Jefferson County Public Libraries. “It is one of those Christmas stories that is read throughout the year, and always peaks during the holiday season.” Guests who arrive at the museum will be escorted outside to the train yard where one of the museum’s historical train cars, acting as The Polar Express, sits quietly. An actor playing the conductor from the book steps out from the train car and yells; All aboard! A boy dressed in pajamas and a robe appears and the characters act out one of the opening scenes from the book. Once the boy enters the train, the conductor addresses the audience and exclaims All Aboard! — the cue for ticket holders to board the train. Once on board the train, actors play out scenes from the book, complete with dancing and singing chefs who serve hot chocolate and a cookie to passengers. The book is then read aloud and guests are brought to the “North Pole” where Santa appears and gives everyone a silver bell. “You actually get to experience the magic of the train,” said Missy Moore, choreographer for the Polar Express Train Ride. This will be the first time the Polar Express experience will be in Denver, Tallman said with the closest production of this type in Durango. Tickets are on sale, and more than a

IF YOU GO The Polar Express Train Ride: running time 75 minutes Performances every Friday, Saturday and Sunday starting Nov. 21 to Dec. 28 Additional performances on Wednesday, Nov. 26, Monday, Dec. 22 and Tuesday, Dec. 23 Show times are 4:30 p.m.,6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices range from $30 to $100 a person depending on class of service Children under 2 years old can ride for free on a ticketed adult’s lap For more information and to purchase tickets, go online at ColoradoRailroadMuseum.org or call 303-279-4591 or 1-800-365-6263

A CELEBRATED BOOK In 1986, The Polar Express received the Randolph Caldecott Medal, which is awarded annually to artists for the most distinguished American picture book for Children. That same year, The Polar Express landed on the New York Times bestseller list. Since that time, 7 million copies have been sold across the globe, according to the book’s website. In 2004, the movie release of the book featured a celebrity voice-over from Tom Hanks and grossed $319 million in the box office worldwide. The Jefferson County Public Library offers The Polar Express in several formats including print, audio and DVD. There are 22 copies of the printed book and they have been checked out hundreds of times. Audio books are checked out for three weeks at a time, and the DVD has been checked out 88 times so far this year.

Santa upstaged Thanksgiving (my birthday this year) by sledding into the Park Meadows dining hall, 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Nov. 8. The free welcome celebration in Lone Tree included milk and cookies, gifts, balloon artists, crafts with Disney, Lego and Pottery Barn Kids and holiday music. Special guest appearances included L.L. Bear, Build-A-Bear Workshop’s Bearemy, the Gingerbread Man, the Holiday Polar Bear and more. Plus, the jolly man himself arrived via big red fire truck to greet guests before heading down to Santa’s Alpine Village for photos. Santa’s Super Sleigh, on loan from the North Pole until Dec. 24, will be on display in the Vistas Court.

Osteria Marco top pizza

Thrillist.com, a website that’s not afraid of inciting a food fight, has just released its list of The Best Pizzeria in every state. Them’s fightin’ words. The timeless debate over the perfect pizza has divided many households, but Thrillist is willing to go there. Here’s what the website purports about pizza: “There are things in America that you can find no matter where you are. The kindness of strangers ... Good pizza. We like to think that somewhere, in each state, there’s a truly sublime pie, and to prove that point, we’ve crunched the numbers (and the crusts) and come up with a definitive list of the best pizzerias in every corner of this great nation ...These are the best pizzerias in every state in America.” Colorado’s winning pie purveyor is Osteria Marco on Larimer Square, Thrillist says. Restaurant mogul Frank Bonanno is no stranger to accolades, so it’s not surprising that his casual Italian eatery made the cut (or slice). Thrillist said, “One of Denver’s premier restaurateurs opened up this pizza place, and it’s a passion project. Perlmutter wins fifth 2-year term By Crystal Anderson

canderson@coloradocommunitymedia.com In the race for Congressional District 7 seat, voters opted to retain consistency, electing incumbent Ed Perlmutter for a fifth term. “Everybody at every level worked so hard to help us win a fifth time,” Perlmutter said during a speech at the state’s Democratic party on Election Night. “Tonight is going to be a long night for some … we’re going to pull it out, we’re going to win these things and we’re going to hold the senate.” Upon the release of preliminary results Perlmutter was in the lead with approximately 54.38 percent or 87,533 votes. Recently named the “Legislator of the Year” by the National Association for Housing and Redevelopment Officials for his work in affordable housing, Perlmutter is no stranger to the legislature. With roots in Jefferson County, he said he is well accustomed to needs of Jeffco constituents. During his last 4 terms, the congressman has been active in the building of a new Veterans Administration hospital in Aurora; he supports immigration reform and has done work in ensuring mental heath care is available for veterans. “What it really comes down to is helping the hardworking people in the middle, that’s what the seventh congressional district is,” he said. His opponent, Don Ytterberg, declined to comment. Ytterberg began his campaign in January. Prior to the start of this campaign, he served as both the chairman for the Jefferson County Republican Party and the vice chairman for the Colorado Republican Party. He ran for the state senate in 2008, losing to the Summit County Sen. Dan Gibbs. A small business owner, Ytterberg is supportive of the industry and currently owns Arvada-based Advanced Surface Technologies, 6155 W. 54th Ave, a small nickel-plating business. He lives in Golden with his wife, Kim. “There are so many more things we still have to accom-

JEFFCO SCHOOL BOARD ON THE RECORD Jefferson County Board of Education discussed the following legislation during its Aug. 28 regular business meeting. Board members in attendance were President Ken Witt, First Vice President Julie Williams, Second Vice President Lesley Dahlkemper, Secretary John Newkirk and Treasurer Jill Fellman.

Charter schools The board of education approved one of two charter school applications. In a 3-2 vote (Newkirk, Williams, Witt) the board approved the Golden View Classical Academy application. The school was approved on the conditions that the applicant would resolve inconsistencies around waivers and details in the insurance model. The minority members (Dahlkemper and Fellman) along with several community members stated they were concerned about the school’s relationship with Hillsdale College, calling it a slippery slope in the separation of church and state. In an unanimous vote, the board denied the Alexandria School of Innovation application, as there wasn’t a need for it in the district at this time.

Student achievement The board of education listened to four elementary

school principals and achievement directors, in an effort to learn and understand how to raise the proficiency reading level of third-graders. The presentation talked about how every child is a reader and a writer, targeting the needs of the individual student, and focusing on student successes. The board asked questions around how reading levels predict assessment outcomes, what’s not working, what programs should be implemented. The board will hear a presentation from more school administrators on what challenges they face at the Nov. 20 meeting. Budget outreach The board of education heard a presentation on the community outreach portion for the 2015-2016 budget cycle. During the presentation, the board discussed using a budget survey, with 10 questions regarding both the community and district’s budget needs and desires. The survey questions will be reviewed at the Nov. 20 meeting. The board plans on launching the survey in mid-late January. The next Jefferson County Board of Education meeting will be 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Jefferson County Education Center, 1829 Denver West Drive, Golden. — Compiled by Crystal Anderson

elected commissioners from three to five. Members on the board will be residents in their districts but are to be elected by the voters of the entire county. It was a close race, but O’Dorisio won the majority vote for the District 4 spot — he received 50.23 percent (60,703) of the votes. His opponent, Republican Joe Domenico, received 49.77 percent (60,143) of the votes. That’s a difference of 560 votes. O’Dorisio lives in the Welby neighborhood and served four years with the Adams County District Attorney’s Office as a prosecutor. He served seven years on the Adams County Planning Commission. Pawlowski secured 50.45 percent (60,846) of the vote, defeating her opponent, Democrat Wilma Rose who received 49.55 percent (59,752). Pawlowski served eight years as the mayor of Brighton and six years prior to that as a council member. For the past 30 years, she has owned and operated Varsity Sports in Brighton.

Incumbent Erik Hansen, Republican won his re-election bid for the District 3 seat. He has received 54.27 percent (66,423) of the vote, while his opponent, Democrat Manuel Solano received 45.73 percent (55,967). Hansen supported the addition of two members on the board. “I think we’ll have a better functioning deliberate governing body,” he said. “I believe we’re going to have some balance as well, with Republicans and Democrats, and I’m looking forward to moving ahead with everyone.”

New clerk & recorder, assessor elected

Republican candidate Stan Martin edged out his opponent Democrat Cynthia Martinez by receiving 51 percent (62,107) of the vote. Martinez got 49 percent (59,676). Martin, who has 23 years of experience in business management, will replace term-limited Karen Long. Republican Patsy Melonakis beat out Adams County deputy assessor Democrat candidate John Schaul for the assessor seat. Melonakis received 52.19 percent (62,311) of the vote; while Schaul received 47.81 percent (57,075).

Marquez’s three touchdowns delivers win Panthers to face No. 2 Valor Christian By Daniel Williams

dwilliams@colorado communitymedia.com LAKEWOOD - Pomona knew it would be tougher a second time around. But the No. 1 Panthers also proved to be the best team in a tough rivalry as they survived No. 2 Columbine 21-14 in the second round of the 5A state playoffs Friday at Jeffco Stadium.

In a rematch of a game played just one month ago Pomona got a superb effort from its superstar player in senior Isaac Marquez, who scored all three of the Panthers’ touchdowns. “Marquez is just a great football player who does so many things for us,” Pomona coach Jay Maddon said. “And we needed him to be that player for us.” Pomona will now prepare to face No. 2 Valor Christian Friday at 7 p.m., in what could be the game of the year between two of the state’s best teams. Valor beat Mountain Vista 44-0 on Friday night to advance to the quarterfinals.

But against Columbine on Friday night it was The Isaac Marquez Show. Marquez scored Pomona’s first touchdown of the game off a Justin Roberts pass 17 yards into the end zone. The Rebels scored their first half touchdown on a broken fourth down play where senior Austin Norton scored from 31 yards out. And the two teams were tied 7-7 after a first half highlighted by stout defense. But Marquez was a marquee performer in the second half, scoring a 1-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter to give the Panthers a 14-7 lead.

And Marquez did it again in the fourth quarter scoring his hat trick touchdown by running the ball in from six yards out. With three minutes left in the game Columbine desperately converted a 74yard touchdown pass which cut Pomona’s lead to 21-14 but that was a close as the Rebels would get to knocking off No. 1. The game was much closer than the two team’s previous meeting on Oct. 10 where Pomona beat Columbine 47-28. The Panthers expected a better fight from the Rebels this time around, which they got despite Columbine’s 5-6 overall record.

Strickland always ahead of the field

Doctor honored for services to student athletes By Scott Stocker

If ever a family doctor belonged in the Colorado High School Activities Association Hall of Fame, it’s Dr. Darwin Strickland. Strickland recently retired from his office practice in Northglenn this year at the age of 80. But he is certainly not out of the medical field, especially with those involved in high school athletics. He is continuing as one of the team physicians for Northglenn High School and with the Children’s Hospital Sports Physicians Program. Strickland’s impact on the students in the Adams School District 12 is immense. For the past 48 years, he has provided free sports physicals for district students, also consulting individually with each student their parents. His overall contributions are too numerous to mention. “I’m very excited and proud as this is one of the achievements and nicest things to be recognized for in Colorado,” Strickland said. “This is just a tremendous honor to be in with all the players and coaches. I didn’t dream about it, being a physician. I think this is the finest award I will have received and I am truly grateful.” To begin with, Strickland was considered a pretty good athlete himself. He participated in

four sports in his four years of high school in Villisca, Iowa and would eventually gain a full athletic scholarship for football at Drake University. He would also attend the University of Nebraska and Colorado while working on his degrees. Strickland married his wife, Suzanne Allen, who also attended Drake, and they just recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. They went on to have four children, all of whom attended Northglenn High School. Strickland also served in the capacity as the team Podiatrist for the Kansas City Chiefs football team while he was attending medical school in Kansas City. He had received a scholarship to attend Kansas City University of Medicine and Bioscience from the American Osteopathhic Association. It was after completing his Strickland internship in Flint, Michigan, and practice for one year, that Strickland moved to Denver in July, 1967. And, it was from that year he also became highly involved in his doctoral activities with the Northglenn school district. Stickland volunteered to act as the solo team physician for Northglenn and Thornton High Schools. He worked at both schools for three years then continued with Northglenn and the Adams County District 12 until the present time. “It was always work that I favored, and being around with the kids and then going

to their playoffs,” Strickland said. “Years ago, Northglenn was one of the toughest and top teams to reach the playoffs. We had some tremendous teams and athletes.” And, the Northglenn community has been extremely proud of Strickland. Just ask former Northglenn Athletic Director, Bob Nunnery. “I can say without reservation, that Dr. Strickland has been a tremendous asset to Northglenn High School, as well as Adams County Five Star School District,” Nunnery said. “Because of his commitment, work ethic, and his dedication to the athletes in our school district, he has been instrumental in the success of many athletic programs directly affecting all type of students and people.” It has been a career service to Northglenn that also brings high praise from Ed Hartnett, the Director of District Activities and Athletics for the Adams 12 Five Star School District. “Doctor Strickland has been to nearly every home football game that Northglenn has played, offering his services for free,” Hartnett said. “He has been a friend to the Northglenn community for nearly half a century. He has always been, and always will be, a true advocate for Colorado High School Athletics.” Strickland was one of the original members selected for the Family Practice Advisory Committee for Health One Sports Medicine Program for high school sports activities for the Denver Metropolitan area in 1996. He also was an original member involved in the establishment of the Adams County District 12 Educational Foundation in 1987. He also served as Secretary of the Board of Education of Adams

County, District 12 for eight years, beginning in 2003. Among Strickland’s many other awards, he has been honored by the National Community Education Association. He and his wife were also named Citizens of the Year by the Adams County District 12 Educational Foundation. Strickland has even had a major attachment with the U.S. Army and the Reserves. He served for 18 years in the Medical Corp and received an honorable discharge as a Lt. Colonel in 2001. Yet that certainly wasn’t all of his personal involvement with the military. As it turned out, three of the Strickland children were involved in the invasion of Iraq in March, 2003, again serving in the Army like their father. Their fourth child was with the ROTC, but had to drop out due to an Asthma condition. Strickland continues to serve the students of the Five Star District and can be found attending to student athletes at any of the playoff games that a district school is involved with. The 2014 hall of fame class will be inducted on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015 at the Red Lion Hotel Southeast, I-225 and Parker) beginning at 6:30 p.m. For those wishing to attend, tickets may be purchased for $50 each by contacting the Colorado High School Activities Association. There are now 60 coaches, 27 administrators, 16 officials, eight significant service contributors and four sports teams enshrined in the CHSAA Hall of Fame which began in 1989.

Root boots 56yard winner for Ralston Valley Setting up a meeting of undefeateds with Fairview By Daniel Williams

dwilliams@coloradocommunitymedia.com AURORA - Perhaps the Denver Broncos should send their scouts to Ralston Valley High School. Because senior Collin Root kicked an unbelievable NFL-like 56-yard game-winning field goal as his No. 1 Mustangs beat No. 5 Eaglecrest 44-43 in the second round of the 5A state playoffs Friday at Legacy Stadium. In what was the most dramatic game of the state tournament so far in any classification, Root and his special teams teammates lined up near the right hash and with just 3.3 second left on the clock he drilled a stunning kick that would have been good from even further out. “It was an unbelievable kick, but we also knew that Collin could make the kick,” Ralston Valley coach Matt Loyd said. “A 56-yard field goal with that kind of pressure would be tough for even a professional kicker.” Ralston Valley’s epic win now sets up a battle between the Mustangs and No. 2 Fairview Friday at 7 p.m. — who, like Ralston Valley, is also undefeated this season. Fairview beat Overland 45-27 Friday night to advance to the quarterfinals. But against Eaglecrest on Friday night the Mustangs played a game where it looked like the Mustangs were going to win big early leading 27-14 after the first quarter. From that point on the game was all Eaglecrest who outscored Ralston Valley 26-7 in the second and third quarters combined. Then with just 38 seconds left in the game the Mustangs ran three straight running plays in order to set up the 56-yard kick which few in the stadium thought was capable of going in. After the kick when through the uprights Ralston Valley players celebrated crazily and swarmed their kicker — who is also a pretty good tight end. But the Mustangs will certainly have their hands full with a Fairview team (11-0, 7-0 in league) that could perhaps be the state’s most complete unit. Fairview is led by senior Johnny Feauto who has had an incredible season which includes 3,648 passing yards and 37 touchdowns. Feauto also has six rushing touchdowns this season.

Adams 12 ballot measures fail, district faced with growth issues By Ashley Reimers

areimers@colorado communitymedia.com By the final ballot count, voters in the Adams 12 Five Star School District decided against a mill levy override and bond question that would have poured money into classrooms and dealt with future growth issues. For 3I, a $15 million mill levy override, 56 percent of the voters did not support the measure, while 61 percent voted against 3J, a $220 million bond. Passage of 3J would have provided students and teachers with updated text books, technology and instructional materials and invested more dollars in curriculum. Teachers would have also received additional training and support to enhance student learning.

As for the bond, the $220 million would have been used to make a major dent in the growth issues the district is facing. Plans for two new K-8 schools, one in the Anthem neighborhood in Broomfield and the other in the Lewis Pointe subdivision in north Thornton, will now be put on hold as well as the construction of a preschool. The district would have also used the bond dollars to maintain and replace leaking roofs, low-functioning heating and cooling systems and faulty plumbing. And about $7 million from the bond would have gone towards equipping and preparing students for 21st Century learning by renovating and modernizing classrooms and building more workspace for career and technical education. The loss of both measures was disappointing for Superintendent Chris Gdowski and the many supporters in the district

and the community. The district must now move forward and focus on addressing the urgency of crowding in the Broomfield and north Thornton areas of the district. “We don’t have any concrete plans at this point,” Gdowski said. “But we are discussing our options and will be engaging with the community on the growth issues.” Some of those options could include boundary changes, which could require students to move to different schools with lower populations, split scheduling, yearround schooling or rotating blocks. For Shannon Bird, an Adams 12 parent, the loss of the ballot measures was tough to swallow. During the campaign Bird spent hours and hours educating the community on the benefits of 3I and 3J. And although the election is over, and the voters have spoken, Bird’s commitment to the students of Adams 12 is not done.

“I believe in public education and now I have to double down on my efforts to keep our community informed on what our students need and what’s going on in our district,” she said. “Hopefully we can get more people participating in the dialogue so that next time we come to the voters there is a different outcome.” As the district moves forward, Gdowski said the staff is committed to giving their all to the students by providing the best education possible, with the resources available.

SALOME’S STARS FOR THE WEEK OF NOV 10, 2014

ARIES (Mar 21 to Apr 19) A rejection of your attempt to be friendly leaves you with two choices: Try again, or give up. If you want to make another effort, go slowly. Let things develop without pressure. TAURUS (Apr 20 to May 20) It could be a problem dealing with unfamiliar people who do things differently from what you’re used to. But rely on that strong sense of purpose to get you through this difficult period. GEMINI (May 21 to Jun 20) To avoid neglecting a personal matter because of a demanding new workplace schedule, start prioritizing immediately. Knowing how to apportion your time takes a little while to set up.

But a more settled period starts by midweek, allowing you to firm up your plan-making once and for all. SCORPIO (Oct 23 to Nov 21) The facts continue to be on your side. So make use of them in dealing with any challenge to your stated position. Also, open your mind to the offer of help from an unlikely source.
