Santa makes a stop in Westminster By Ashley Reimers
areimers@colorado communitymedia.com A visit from Santa means more to Sherri Vittum than just seeing a smile on her daughter’s face. It means keeping a family tradition alive. “When I was a little girl, my mom signed me up for visits from Santa,” Vittum said. “And now I’m doing the same for Abbie. It’s just incredible to see her face light up to have Santa come to the house.” Abbie’s visit from Santa on Dec. 2 was made possible by the Westminster Fire Department. For more than 75 years, firefighters and community members have chauffeured Santa to various homes in the city. The program has become so popular that the city uses an online lottery system to select which families get Santa visits. This year more than 1,000 children received a visit from Santa between Dec. 1 and 6. “I love to see the look on kids’ faces when Santa shows up on a fire truck,” said Lieutenant Jayson Sale, program coordi-
nator. “They are surprised, excited and sometimes can barely tell Santa what they want for Christmas.” This was Abbie’s third visit from Santa, and this year she asked for an Xbox and a Disney Infinity video game. She says she feels really special when Santa arrives at her door, like she’s the “only kid in the neighborhood lucky enough to meet Santa.” “I feel excited when I see Santa,” Abbie Vittum, 7, said. “My favorite part about Christmas is getting all the things from Santa and hanging up the lights and all that stuff.” Visits from Santa are just one of the many holiday traditions Vittum hopes to pass down to Abbie. She also hopes to provide the means for Abbie to have a close relationship with her grandma, Joyce Dowe, just like she did with her grandma as she was growing up. “Traditions like making homemade pie are very important to me,” Vittum said. “I just miss my grandma, and I know she would have loved Abbie. So it’s important for me that Abbie knows her grandma how I knew my grandma.”

Although it was 4 a.m., Morning Star Yazzie and Ariyah Castro, both 11, were full of energy as they waited to see a rocket burst into the atmosphere. “It’s pretty exciting to be here,” Yazzie said. Yazzie, Castro and 13 other members of Girls Inc. took part in the Dec. 4 Orion launch watch party at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Girls Inc., the official watch party sponsor, partners with Lockheed Martin to provide STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education mentoring programs and inspire girls. The trip to the watch party was part of the Rocket Girls program, which teaches the girls how to build and launch their own rockets. “The girls are already engaged in STEM and learning about rockets,” said Chris Homolac, a Lockheed Martin mentor. “So it was really exciting for them to have the opportunity to experience a real launch and take it to the next level.” Unfortunately the girls and about 500 other people left the museum disappointed after a

Brandon Weiss never considered vanpooling for his commute from Parker to Westminster, until he received an email from someone in his office who was looking into the travel option. He admits the thought of trading in his car for a van filled with other people and the idea of adding even more time to his alreadylong commute didn’t seem appealing. But he gave it a try in September. “The vanpool has been fantastic, absolutely wonderful,” he said. “I consider myself a car guy.
I enjoy driving and have a sports car, so I never would have guessed I would enjoy a vanpool as much as I do.” Weiss’ vanpool leaves from Aurora and travels to Scottrade in Westminster. The group uses vanpool provider Way to Go, which provides the vehicle, maintenance and fuel costs in return for a monthly fee from each passenger. Scottrade also kicks in $25 a month to help pay the cost. Weiss estimates he’s saving about $150 a month by vanpooling, which doesn’t include wear and tear on his vehicle. “I was spending over $200 a month on gas and $100 a month on tolls, and now I get to split that with three other people,” he said.
“Anyone thinking about a vanpool should definitely take the time to investigate their options. It’s worth it.” In an effort to increase the number of vanpools traveling the US 36 corridor, 36 Commuting Solutions is offering new vanpoolers a one-time $75 cash incentive through the Curb Your Frustration campaign, funded by the Colorado Department of Transportation, the Denver Regional Council of Governments, DRCOG and the Regional Transportation District, RTD. Currently, 43 vanpools travel the US 36 corridor, serving 211 passengers. “Vanpooling makes sense for people who live and work near each other who may not have ac-
cess to convenient transit service or who live far from their work location which likely makes taking transit too time intensive,” said Audrey DeBarros, 36 Commuting Solutions executive director. “Vanpooling is an affordable option to share the commute to work and is a convenient option for Denver metro residents.” The Curb Your Frustration campaign also offers new transit riders a free $45 RTD Regional 10-ride ticket booklet. Fan-tastic fun cheering on the Broncos I have been a Denver Broncos fan for some 50 years. I’m not kidding. Watching the Broncos on Sunday was practically a religion growing up. In fact, we watched all types of football. While other kids learned the state capitols, I learned college mascots, and I needed only a few notes to name that fight song. High school football in Monte Vista was the original Friday Night Lights. While I was in graduate school at the University of Northern Colorado, the December commencement fell on the same day as the Division II championship, so the college president announced the score throughout the ceremony. We won. For years in Colorado Springs, Saturdays in the fall – rain, shine, or snow – were spent tailgating at the Air Force Academy and cheering on the Falcons, whose games, by the way, are some of the best pageantry in all of college football.
But ah, the Broncos. My dad knew how important it is to be a true fan; he always said he bled orange. So year after year, season after season, my Sundays (or Thursdays or Mondays) in front of the TV or at the stadium are simply non-negotiable. I’ve always been the very definition of “fan” (derived from the word “fanatic,” by the way), through the up-anddown years and the lean years, during the Elway reign, and then for the series of line-ups that followed. And of course, the past couple of years with
Peyton Manning have been quite a ride. Now, because it’s December and the season of giving, I’m going to share some important ways I’ve learned to cheer on the Denver Broncos, especially through this run-up to the playoffs. First, we wear our orange and blue, whether or not we’re not going to the game. My own collection of Broncos wear had been somewhat limited, but after receiving a sweet hoodie for my birthday, I’m all decked out when I make that last-minute grocery store run for a veggie tray and hustle through the self-checkout with the other fans. We nod and smile and we know. Second – again, even if we’re not in the stands – we pay attention when the other team drops the ball, literally. We get the cue from the announcer, which can be heard clearly even on TV, and right after he says a “pass is…”, we scream “inn - comm - pleeeeeeeete!” If we’re doing it right, the people next door will hear us and wish they were
having as much fun. Finally, when we’re rockin’ the stands at Mile High (it will always be Mile High Stadium to me), watch Peyton Manning. No, seriously, watch Peyton Manning. When Denver has the ball and Peyton waves his hands for quiet at the line of scrimmage, let’s give it to him. We can save our screams and cheers and exhortations for the defense, because we know that’s when we really make a difference. We’re known as the best fans in the universe for a reason. Loving the Broncos fiercely throughout the years may be as complicated as an Adam Gace/Peyton Manning game plan, but they can’t do it without us. At least that’s what I grew up believing. Andrea Doray is a writer who’s pretty sure she has orange blood as well… her dad would be proud. Contact her at a.doray@andreadoray.com.

Improvements coming to intersection Changes planned at 120th and Federal By Ashley Reimers
areimers @coloradocommunitymedia.com Construction of a pedestrian underpass near the intersection of 120th Avenue and Federal Boulevard in Westminster will begin early next year. The addition of the Ranch Creek underpass is part of a larger construction project to improve the traffic system at the same intersection. “The underpass is roughly 500 feet from the intersection,” said assistant city engineer Dave Loseman. “The underpass will provide access to open space and the trail system along Big Dry Creek. Right now the trail system isn’t really accessible, so the underpass solves that problem.” Improvements on the actual intersection will begin in May or June of next year. Loseman said the project will provide accommodations for six through lanes on 120th Avenue, four lanes on Federal Boulevard, double left-turn lanes in all directions and right-turnn lanes at all legs of
Public comment is invited on the city’s proposal to use $200,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds to purchase water tap credits in support of the redevelopment efforts at the southwest corner of Lowell Boulevard and 73rd Avenue. CDBG funds are used to provide assistance to the city’s lowand moderate-income residents through programs and activities, and/or eliminate blight conditions in designated areas. CDBG funds which are leftover from completed projects or are otherwise unallocated to specific projects, must be allocated. The city proposes to allocate $200,000 from the unallocated balance of CDBG funds towards the 73rd Avenue and Lowell Boulevard redevelopment water tap credits. The city envisions a multi-story, mixed-use development project at this location that includes ground floor commercial space with apartment units above. Comments may be submitted via email to hruddy@ cityofwestminster.us through Wednesday, Dec. 24. Westminster and Adams County artists invited to enter art exhibit Paletteers Art Club is calling for entries by Adams County and Westminster artists for the Art From the Heart juried exhibit. All original fine art medias plus sculpture are allowed, but no photography or computer art. The art show is scheduled for Feb. 3 through March 16 at the College Hill Library, 3705 W. 112th Ave. in Westminster. Ribbons and cash awards will be presented. Art From the Heart is sponsored by the Paletteers Art Club and the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District. The registration deadline is Jan.19, and the fee is $35 for up to three pieces. Improvements will be made to the intersection of 120th Avenue and Federal Boulevard in Westminster next year which include double left turns in all directions and the construction of a pedestrian underpass. Photo by Ashley Reimers the intersection. The existing eastbound-to-southbound sweeping right-turn lane will also be removed along with one bridge on the ramp to provide for the underpass and an expansion of the nearby open space area, he added. “We will be installing curbs, gutters, sidewalks and roadway lighting on both sides of 120th Avenue and Federal Boulevard along the west, south and east legs within 1,600 feet of the actual intersec-
tion,” Loseman said. Total cost of the project is about $4.7 million. The city was awarded $3.421 million in federal funding for the project, and the Colorado Department of Transportation is contributing $200,000. The city is funding $1.043 million. Because the intersection is a busy one, Loseman said, drivers will experience some delays, but traffic will be maintained through the intersection. The project is estimated to take about 240 days.
Plan West, on behalf of BN Morris Development, will hold a neighborhood meeting to present a proposal for 32 single-family detached lots on 13.7 acres to be located at the southwest corner of West 111th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard in Westminster. Residents are invited to attend the meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, at the West View Recreation Center, in the Community Room. Volunteers needed for snow removal Volunteers are needed to remove snow from the public walkways of seniors and citizens with disabilities during the winter snow season. Removal must be completed 24 hours after a snowfall. Anyone interested in helping should contact the city’s volunteer coordinator at 303-658-2159 for an application. Youth under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Mosley moves over to Adams By Vic Vela
vvela@coloradocommunitymedia.com Newly-hired Adams County Parks and Open Space Department Director Nathan Mosley said he is looking forward to getting back to his roots as he takes over a department that is expected to provide greater opportunities for outdoor recreation over the next two years Mosley, 40, will take over his new position in January. He has worked for the City of Wheat Ridge as an assistant to the city manager since 2011. Prior to that, Mosley spent several years with the parks department in the Town of Sliverthorne. Mosley said he is looking forward to bringing the experience he gained there to Adams County. “When this opportunity came up, it was one that could be make or break for my career,” he said. “I feel like, by doing this, I can make the best impact on the quality of life of residents.” Mosley will take over a department that currently manages about 3,100 acres of parks and open space. The county also holds more than 5,400 acres of conservation easements. Two of the bigger projects Mosley will
oversee next year will include a two-mile expansion of the South Platte River Trail and the completion of ongoing renovations to Rotella Park. In 2016, the parks department will enter the design phase for the 88th Avenue Open Space Restoration Project, a $3.1 million project that is primarily funded through settlement dollars the county received due to environmental damages to Rocky Mountain Arsenal. Mosley also will oversee the county’s open space sales tax program, a voter-approved parks and open space projects funding mechanism. Mosley will be taking over a department that is shifting its focus. “For the past several years our focus has been open space and preserving farm land,” said Deputy County Manager Ray Gonzales. “The Board of County Commissioners would like to see more active parks and outdoor recreational activities in Adams County.” Mosley said he would like to add more amenities to the 11,000 acre Regional Park, which hosts the annual county fair. Mosley said he looks forward to communicating with the public to find out what they would like to see from his department. “You need to listen to the public,” he
said. “You don’t want to build parks that they’re not going to use or they don’t need. We’re going to be able to do a lot of cool
things, but you have to look at each piece of land individually and see what makes the most sense in each space.”

Dance studio performs version of holiday classic By Ashley Reimers
areimers@colorado communitymedia.com Forgoing the traditional performance of “The Nutcracker” ballet, Amanda Hill, owner of Virtuosity Dance Centre in Golden, decided to create her own holiday story for her dancers. With help from theater teacher Veronika Nelson, she wrote and choreographed her version of “A Christmas Carol.” Nelson’s “$crooge’s $tory: a Rock Opera,” tells of Ebenezer Scrooge’s encounter with three ghosts who show him the error of his ways. “I just didn’t want to do “The Nutcracker,” Hill said. “We’ve all seen it, and it’s great, but I wanted to do something that was my own, something in which I could include my actors and singers as well as my dancers.” $crooge’s $tory: a Rock Opera debuts Friday and Saturday, Dec. 12-13 at Westminster High School, 6933 Raleigh St. The story is set in mid-1960s America and is packed with songs ranging from traditional Christmas carols to soul-rocking Motown to foot-stomping rock and roll, Hill said. Fifty students make up the cast, ranging in age from 2 to 39. Although Hill wrote the script, she retained key elements of the classic story. “There are certain aspects to the story that everyone knows, that you can never let go, like the ghosts and rattling chains,” she said. “So no matter how much I changed
it or manipulated it, I kept the parts that make the story as wonderful as it is.” One change in Hill’s story is casting three girls as Scrooge: one who plays the miserly grump, one who experiences the ghosts and one who is the enlightened character. Nicole Woolsey, 16, from Golden High School, is playing Scrooge after his transformation. She said she’s never played a part that is split among three people. She admits that in the beginning she wasn’t too thrilled with the casting, but after learning her lines, the idea of playing Scrooge grew on her. “Being Scrooge is actually really cool because I get to interact with the other Scrooges to figure out how I’m going to change for my part,” she said. “Plus, I also get to play the Ghost of Christmas Past, which is awesome because I like being creepy.” Virtuosity Dance Centre will present two performances of “$crooge’s $tory: a Rock Opera,” the first at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, and the second at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. Advance tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for kids under 10, and can be purchased online at http://vdancecentre. eventbrite.com. Tickets at the door are $15 for all. “This show is really fun and different,” Hill said. “Families can treat their kids to another side of performing arts as they get to see singing, dancing, acting — the whole shebang. We pulled out all the bells and whistles for this one.”

Coming together on union question In the world of politics, you can get surprised from time to time with how things change and when you least expect them to change. Such an “event” occurred at the Westminster City Council study session held Dec. 1. The main item on the agenda (other than executive session items) was about the fire fighters’ collective bargaining issue. The City Council had previously received petitions containing 255 signatures from City employees in which they were asking the Council to let Westminster voters decide the issue of whether there should be collective bargaining with the fire fighters. Also, the Council had previously tabled action on selecting special legal counsel to draft the ordinance which would spell out the parameters of the collective bargaining agreement. These two “factors” generated the request for Council to discuss what direction to go.
A clear change in policy direction
Long story short, the consensus of the five members of council who were present at the discussion was to support having an outside law firm with expertise in collective bargaining draft the ordinance which would then be placed on the November, 2015 ballot. Simply put, this is a major change in policy direction for some of the City Coun-
members of Council directed the staff to proceed on the basis of a November 2015 election!
A new councillor coming
cil. Rather than have the voters decide, Mayor Pro Tem Winter and city councillors Garcia, Pinter and Seitz had previously taken the position that the City Council would decide the collective bargaining issue via a vote on the yet to be drafted ordinance. I cannot help but believe the city employees’ petitions were a major influencing factor. Both Winter and Councillor Bob Briggs were not in attendance on Dec. 1. While the policy direction to staff has changed, the “devil is still in the detail” and could cause the election to go astray. In particular, there is not a consensus on which outside legal firm to hire. I can see this becoming a sticky side issue to the main focus. Also, the process of being inclusive in the drafting of the ordinance and the final terms and conditions will be interesting to follow. However, the good news in my opinion is that the five
With Mayor Pro Tem Faith Winter’s victory in House District 35, she will be leaving her City Council seat early. She will need to resign before she can be sworn in at the Capitol for the upcoming Legislative Session. So, City Council will be selecting her replacement in the coming weeks. The deadline to “throw your hat in the ring” to be considered to be appointed was last week on Dec. 4. Whoever is appointed will have to stand election in November, 2015. Hopefully, the six members of City Council can find a “common ground” in one of the applicants without going through a protracted voting process. I can recall years ago when there was a vacancy on the City Council where the Council was evenly divided on different applicants. It took 57 votes and numerous days before one of the City Councillors changed his support to the candidate on the “other side.” The candidate that received a majority of votes was “Butch” Hicks. Bill Christopher is a former Westminster city manager and RTD board member.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Best way to shop for gifts? Some of us buy all at once, some of us slowly accumulate them once the holiday season nears but we all have presents to buy for loved ones on Christmas. But is there a better way to avoid the craziness of holiday shopping? What is why we wanted to ask our loyal reader the question: What is the best way to do your Christmas shopping?
“For me it always seems easiest to get everyone gift cards. Then they can go get whatever they want.” Joe Williams, Lakewood
“It is all about shopping online nowadays. You find everything you need and not have to get out of your pajamas. Plus you can find some great deals.” Chris Martinez, Lakewood
“Once the fall arrives I start to try and get all of my Christmas’ ideas together. That gives me a couple good months to go out and get everything I need.” Kim Nguyen, Arvada
“To be honest I always wait until the last minute and just get whatever is leftover which I know is not the best method. One day I hope to change…” Marcus Duncan, Littleton

SCHOOL NOTES District opens more than 25 schools to Choice
Adams 12 Five Star Schools has opened the Choice application process for the 2015-2016 school year. The district’s Choice Program allows students to apply to attend schools outside of their attendance area boundary. To see the schools and grades open for Choice, please visit http://www.adams12.org/choice_schools. The deadline for priority consideration is Friday, Jan. 30. Parents and students submitting an application for priority consideration will be notified of the results of their application no later than the third week of February. If the number of requests exceeds the spaces available for
priority consideration in a given school, the district will hold a lottery. The Choice application is available online at http:// www.adams12.org/choice/application. Applications also are available at each school and at the Educational Support Center, 1500 E. 128th Ave. in Thornton.
Applications for early entrance to kindergarten, first grade
The Five Star District recognizes that some highly advanced gifted children may benefit academically, socially and/ or emotionally from early entrance into kindergarten or first grade. Due to the academic demands of accelerating a student
into kindergarten/first grade, students are screened using a number of nationally recognized assessments to determine whether kindergarten is an appropriate fit for each student applicant. Parents may submit applications through Jan. 31 for early kindergarten entrance consideration by district staff. More information is available at http://www.adams12.org/ kindergarten/early_entrance.

Colorado gets readers’ nod for beer tours Readers of USA Today have cast their votes for the top 10 brewery tours in the nation. In Colorado, New Belgium Brewing Co. in Fort Collins, birthplace of Fat Tire, landed in a respectable third place, while Oskar Blues Brewery in Longmont came in seventh. Here’s what USA Today said: “With thousands of breweries in the USA, selection by our panel of beer experts for inclusion in the contest was an honor in itself, and being voted by USA Today readers into the top 10 is certainly worth bragging about.” The full list of winners in the Best Brewery Tour contest category for Readers’ Choice, plus readers comments, is online at www.10best.com/awards/travel/ best-brewery-tour/.

Annual Arvada Center shows bring deals, community By Clarke Reader
creader@coloradocommunitymedia.com Finding a unique gift can be a major undertaking, especially with so many sales and locations jockeying for attention. The Arvada Center makes it easy for those looking to find just the right gift for the art lover with its 28th annual Fine Art Market Show and Sale, and the 7th annual Arvada Center Educational Studios (ACES) sale. Both sales begin Thursday, Dec. 11, and will be open to shoppers through Sunday, Dec. 21. Both shows are at the center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., with the Fine Art Market in the main gallery and the ACES show in the upper gallery. This will be her third ACES show. “I haven’t done a lot of formal selling so this is a wonderful opportunity for me to learn how to approach a sale,” she said. Real estate investors wanting to keep their money in Colorado should look no farther than Denver, thanks to the millennials, the upcoming real estate generation, which is predicted to dictate market trends for decades to come, according to a story in U.S. News & World Report. The story said, “In a report released October 2014, entitled ‘15 Economic Facts About Millennials,’ released by the White House, the President’s Council of Economic Advisers noted that the millennial generation, which accounted for onethird of the U.S. population in 2013, will shape the nation’s economy `for decades to come.’ “Out of the top 100 metropolitan areas analyzed by the National Association of Realtors, 10 markets stood out as projected to gain or to witness an increase in millennial home buying in the upcoming year. Those metropolitan areas are: Austin, Texas; Dallas; Denver; Des Moines, Iowa; Grand Rapids, Mich.; Minneapolis; New Orleans; Ogden, Utah; Salt Lake City; and Seattle.” Read the entire story at money.usnews. com/money/blogs/the-smarter-mutualfund-investor/2014/12/01/10-us-real-estate-markets-investors-should-watch.

This year I think I’m going to try bringing small works that make up one large piece.” While the diversity of options in both gifts and prices is a key selling point for customers, for artists the markets offer a chance to share in community during the holidays. “I’ve been taking classes here for a while, and there is such a community here,” Schrieber said. “It’s great to be doing a show with instructors I know and fellow students.” Organizers of both shows make sure only the highest caliber artists are on display. “A lot of festivals you go to let anyone in who pays the booth fee,” Gardner said. “The quality of work is so high here, and you know you’re going to be shown with other great art,” Meriash added. For more information call 720-898-7200 or visit www. arvadacenter.org.
Wheat Ridge’s newest pet grooming service, Muddy Paws Bath House, celebrated its grand opening Dec. 6 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a petthemed art show to raise money for a local shelter. Muddy Paws offers full- and self-service pet washing and grooming. After six years in business, the shop relocated from its previous home in Denver to a bigger location at 4332 Harlan St. in Wheat Ridge. The new building provides owner Zia Meranto with more room and additional parking for her customers. The larger facility includes a walk-in tub to accommodate large or older dogs. Donations from the fundraiser go to Max Fund Adoption mobile. Muddy Paws will have a gallery full of pet-related art for sale for the whole month, a photo booth, refreshments and a pet adoption mobile vehicle from Max Fund.

of the 21st Annual Damon Runyon Award, given to an individual or individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the field of journalism. Clarke will accept the award at a banquet in his honor on April 24 at the Denver Marriott City Center. Social hour begins at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7. Clarke is the man to read in Las Vegas, as he covers all the hot news about entertainers, hotels, casinos and big shots that make Las Vegas such a dynamic city. The Montana native started his journalism career as a sportswriter and later joined The Associated Press in Cincinnati. He was AP’s coordinator of coverage for the Los Angeles Summer Olympics in 1984. He joined the Rocky Mountain News in 1984 and broke the story that Denver and Miami were being awarded National League expansion franchises. In 1978, Clarke was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, along with the news team he headed, for coverage of the Willow Island disaster, where a cooling tower under construction at a West Virginia power station collapsed and killed 51 workers. After 15 years at the Rocky Mountain News, Clarke took his man-about-town column to the Las Vegas Review-Journal in 1999. Tickets cost $115 each and can be purchased online at www.blacktie-colorado.

Shop locally
this holiday season
Metro Creative Connection
Shopping is a big part of the holiday season, when families and friends gather to reconnect and exchange gifts. While the popularity of shopping online has grown, such practices are not always eco-friendly or timely, as gifts bought online must be packaged and shipped, wasting valuable resources and time that last-minute shoppers may not have. The benefits of shopping locally go beyond convenience and the chance to reduce your carbon footprint. The following are a few ways that shopping locally this holiday season can directly benefit your community and the people who call it home.
Local economy When men and women shop locally, they are putting money back into their local communities. Local small businesses may be owned by your neighbors, and it can be comforting to know that your holiday shopping dollars are going to support a neighbor instead of a large corporation. Local businesses also employ your neighbors, so shopping local can strengthen the local economy by creating jobs that may not exist if you and members of your community fail to support local small businesses.
Community identity Local small businesses go a long way toward creating a neighborhood identity, and that identity can create a stronger sense of community among you and your neighbors. In addition, a unique community identity can make your town more attractive to outsiders, and that appeal can improve the value of local real estate while also attracting more people to local businesses in your neighborhood.

Uniqueness of gifts The gifts you buy when shopping locally also can benefit your community. Gifts purchased from small local businesses tend to be more unique than items bought from national chains, as smaller retailers tend to sell more homemade items than their national competitors. Recipients of such items may find such gifts more thoughtful than mass produced items bought from national chains, and the uniqueness of homemade gifts may encourage the gifts’ recipients to visit your community and do some shopping, further benefitting your local economy.

Ralston Valley tops Legacy on basketball court By Scott Stocker

Wrestlers place sixth in tourney By Scott Stocker The number five will have a significant meaning for the Northglenn wrestling team this season. After all, the Norse have that many team captains. It was a designation by coach Brian Hufford which honors the five returning varsity grapplers from the 2013-2014 season. And it’s the five Norse captains leadership efforts that could lead the team to a fine campaign. Northglenn placed sixth in last Saturday’s opening meet of the season contested at Arapahoe High School in Centennial. Seventeen teams were in the tournament, won by Coronado with 188 points. Fruita-Monument was second (181.5) followed by Douglas County (164.5), Cherry Creek (138.5), Eaglecrest (117.5) and Northglenn (114.5). “I’m extremely excited about the strong group of senior leaders that we have this year and these boys will be a key to our success,” Hufford said. “We have 12 seniors on the team and 10 of these seniors are working on four years of experience. They are excited to step forward and help lead and that’s just terrific.” The five key returning vets are Robert Burger (120 pounds), Michael Garcia (138), Maurisio Garcia (120), Rocky Nava (126) Cruz De Lara (220). And, the Norse will also look to a talent freshman, Ricky Nava (106), Rocky’s brother. “We are looking for an excellent season from all the boys,” Hufford said. “But our five team captains should come through with excitement we are seeking. They are leaders in different ways and those are other important aspects to look forward too.” It’s also going to be interesting to see how the lineup shakes up between Burger and Maurisio Garcia. They both wrestled at 120 in last Saturday’s Arapahoe Invitational and, as it turned out, they went against each other in the tournament final in their weight class. Garcia won by decision.
Maurisio Garcia 1st, Robert Burger 2nd. “I feel we are going to have a good season, with the numbers to help us out,” Garcia said. “The key is to practice and to fight hard and to become better. I place fifth at state when I was a sophomore and my plan is to place this year. Last year was a disappointment, as far as state went, but I’m ready to go again.” Burger, who also carries a 4.0 grade point average, is high on the season and feels he and his teammates should do well. “The key is to stay healthy and work toward doing well in the league and in the Regionals,” said Burger, a junior. “I want to shake off the pressure and go out and have fun. The key is to practice rock hard and be confident. That hard work can lead to talent. I’m definitely excited for the season and our start is exciting right now.” Michael Garcia, a senior, also reached state last season, but was unable to place. He’s excited for the season and also looks forward to attending Colorado State University in the fall with his career plans to become a dentist. “I think we’re going to do pretty good this season,” Garcia said. “We have high numbers on the team and that’s certainly a big key for us. We’ve got a lot of first year guys and that’s good for our preseason preparations.” Rocky Nava, no doubt, is mentally ready to go.
“I was 6th in state last year and this season should be very exciting and exceptional,” Nava said. “I think we have a great team and I want to be a leader. We need to practice hard and I just want to give out and work hard. I think we can go a long ways and I’m getting excited. “I feel ready and confident, no more nerves,” continued Nava. “I just want to go out and do what I do best in wrestling. I want to wrestle in college, but I don’t know where yet. For a big guy, De Lara is very agile on the mat. “We now just need to practice hard and become mentally tough,” De Lara said. “I’m also just getting over the flu, too. I feel good and I hope to get a chance to medal at state. I do think we can do well as a team. We’ll need to get a few upsets, but we are capable of have some fine performances from all of us.” Northglenn’s 152-pounder, junior Anthony Rivera, is another of the Norse to keep a good eye on. He’s also coming off an injury shortened season a year ago. “I was 4-4 when I was injured last year,” Rivera said. “I just want to stay healthy and come up strong on the little things. I just want to get my techniques tuned up and keep injury free. I feel like our team could have a great year.”
PENNING IN POMONA

The Legacy girls basketball team was stymied by Ralston Valley in last Tuesday’s opening game of the 2014-2015 season, 6049. It also was a first round game in the Arapahoe-Cherry Creek Tournament. However, Legacy was able to bounce back in the consolation semifinal, Thursday, as the Lighting defeated George Washington, 52-40. Washington, by the way, had been beaten by host Arapahoe, 77-54, in the Patriot’s tournament opener. Legacy got off to a slow start in the first quarter against Ralston Valley, falling behind 5-0. The Lightning didn’t score until there was 2-minutes, :30-seconds left in the period and those points were scored on free throws by Bree Paulson. Courtney Smith would hit the first field goal of the season for Legacy with 1:48 left in the quarter, but at least cut the score to 5-4. The quarter would end with Ralston Valley leading 9-8, yet it appeared that the Lighting had found a way to get their game turned around. But, it wasn’t to be. Ralston Valley, with Morgan Nishida and Ashley VanSickle leading the way, would come through with a 29-21 lead at the half. VanSickle, a talented 5-7 sophomore, was her team’s top scorer with 17 points. Nishida, the only senior on this year’s team, would score 16. Ralston Valley would eventually increase the lead to 44-34 after three quarters. Legacy would mount a short comeback to trail only six points with 5:42 left in the game. But baskets by Sydney Prey and VanSickle, would keep the Mustangs in front, 49-40. Turnovers would certainly hurt Legacy’s opportunities, as the Lightning committed seven before they were even able to score their first points. While it was a tough loss for Legacy, Smith and Paulson feel their team will be able to put things together for a solid run this season. Good thoughts, too, from Lightning’s coach, Craig Van Patten. “I think we’re going to come around,” Van Patten said. “We have three players on this year’s team playing their first year of varsity. Ralston’s press bothered us in the first half, but we were able to pick it up in the second half. Now, we’ll just have to see how the girls adjust and go forward.” Smith would lead Legacy in points as she came through with a game high 19 while Paulson would come through with 14. “We’re young and we need to work out the kinks,” said Smith, a 6-4 senior. “We let them get a big lead and we couldn’t match up at the end. They just had too much for us. It was definitely a slow start, but we were able to pick it up.” Paulson felt the comeback would be on the right track as Legacy was able to pull to a 12-12 tie with 7 minutes left in the second quarter. However, Ralston Valley was able to outscore the Lighting, 12-4, over the next four minutes. “We’re just going to try and get better,” said Paulson, a 5-10 senior. “We just have to play better as a team. It was such a slow start, one we didn’t anticipate.” Jeff Gomer, Platte Valley’s coach, felt his team also got off to a rough start. “We looked a little sloppy in the first quarter, but we were also becoming aggressive,” Gomer said. “Things went well later, that’s for sure. We’re young, only our one senior, and we have a lot of work in progress. The key tonight was that we made our three’s.” Nashida only stands in at 5-3, but she is a talented ball handler that can make her way inside, despite her size. “We started slow, but we became more focused as the game progressed,” Nashida said. “We still need to be more focused on what we need to accomplish. Our offense is going to come around, but this was certainly a good night for our first win.” VanSickle couldn’t have agreed more. “It was a lot of work, but we played hard,” Van Sickle said. “We were much better in the second half and we want to keep the ball going in our direction as the season goes on. But it was a good start tonight.” Legacy came through to defeat George Washington in their second game, but was defeated by Legend, 43-34, in the tournament’s consolation final.

High hopes for Legacy hoops Senior girls lead a promising team By Scott Stocker It was an up and down opening season week for the Legacy girls basketball team, but the hopes are certainly high for a successful year. Legacy, coached by Craig Van Patten, was stymied by Ralston Valley last week in the opening game of the 2014-2015 season, 60-49. It also was a first round game in the ArapahoeCherry Creek Tournament. However, Legacy was able to bounce back in the consolation semifinal, Thursday, as the Lighting defeated George Washington, 52-40. But the opening week ended in disappointment as they were beaten by Legend, 43-34, in the consolation final. There is little doubt that Van Patten is excited for the season, one in which he feels his three senior leaders will be the key players. Courtney Smith will be a force and a key under the basket as the 6-foot, 4 inch standout can go in and out. The same actually holds true for Bree Paulson (5-10) and guard Miranda Romo (5-4). “We have some good positive potential,” Van Patten said. “Courtney will be going to the University of Northern Colorado and inside, she certainly is a force. She started as a freshman when we won state in 2012 and everyone looks to her leadership. She is considered one of the top two or three players in the state. “Bree has been a three-year starter and the girls look up to her for her leadership qualities,” said Van Patten. “She has a lot of valuable qualities and strives so hard to accomplish the best she can.” Smith and Paulson came into the season raring to go and hopes, again, are high for a trip into the state tournament. “We’re really excited for the season,” Smith said. “Last year we reached the final eight and we’re excited to see how far we can go. Our loss to Platte Valley hurt, but in the long run, it will help. My key is to be a leader and definitely help all those on our team. We just want everything to come out the best it can for us.” “Overall, I think it’s going to be a fine season,” Paulson said. “I think the year will be a success. We are supportive of one another and we’ll be able to pick each other up in tough situations. Our key is to stay together and keep our spirits alive.” Smith led Legacy in points in the opener against Ralston Valley as she came through with a game high 19 while Paulson scored 14. “We know there will be some ups and down this season,” Smith said. “We just want to have more ups than downs. We’ll work hard and I do think we’re going to have some fine accomplishments.” Youth takes over from there. Sophomore’s Katelyn Pedersen (5-8) and Vanessa Romo (5-8) join the junior starter Taylor Makowski (6-1), rounding out the starting five. “We’ve got young players at guard, but they have been learning well,” Van Patten said. “What it comes down to is how are our young guards do adjust. We just want to take care, work hard and develop. Another key is our front court and they could develop into being among the best in the state. It’s all about how the kids develop. “Our league is one of the finest in the state.” Van Patten said. “We got a good non-league schedule with two tournaments. Broomfield is now in our league and that makes it much better. Our next tournament is at Prairie View.” There are kinks to work out, but it does appear that Legacy has the potential to be among the top contenders in the 5A, Front Range League. There are 13 teams — one of the state’s largest. Monarch, Fairview and Fort Collins are considered the early frontrunners. All came through with decisive victories in the opening week. Smith already leads the league in blocked shots, and is fifth best in points with 19 per game. She is also grabbing nine rebounds a game. Paulson is the current league leader in rebounds with 12 a game. Legacy hosted Adams City, Dec. 10 and will play at Highlands Ranch, Dec. 13.

Norse double up on the podium Strong showing in early tourney standings By Scott Stocker While Northglenn finished in sixth place in the season opening Arapahoe Invitational Wrestling Tournament last Saturday, it was far from being a back to the mat experience for the Norsemen. Seventeen teams were in the tournament, won by Coronado with 188 points. FruitaMonument was second (181.5) followed by Douglas County (164.5), Cherry Creek (138.5), Eaglecrest (107.5) and Northglenn (114.5). Rounding out the top 10 place winners was Lakewood (100), Regis Jesuit (94), Arapahoe (90) and Aurora Central (85.5). “I’m extremely excited about the strong group of senior leaders that we have this year and these boys will be a key to our success,” said Northglenn coach Brian Hufford. “We have 12 seniors on the team and 10 of these seniors are working on four years of experience. They are excited to step forward and help lead and that’s just terrific.” Definitely a bright spot for Northglenn came at 120-pounds as two of the Norse wrestlers, Robert Burger and Maurisio Garcia, advanced to face each other for the invitational championship. That right there is an amazing accomplishment. However, Garcia, who improved to 8-0, was award the win, Burger, 6-2. “This was cool and it was a fine opportunity and day for us,” Garcia said. “We just want to produce for Northglenn and both just get better.” Added Burger, “Yep, it was cool for both of us reaching the top in this tournament in our weight class. We didn’t know we both could do it, but it’s something we’ll remember for a long
time.” It’s hard to remember when two wrestlers from the same team in a fairly large tournament were able to reach the finals against each other. Yet, in another team double matchup, Lakewood’s Gabriel Dinette was award the victory over his teammate, Seth Hogan at 132 pounds for third place. “Having two of our wrestlers from the same weight class reach a final in a big tournament is very rare,” Hufford said. “I don’t know how many times this has been accomplished in a bigger meet. But it great to have to boys advance that far.” Northglenn’s Michael Garcia reached the final at 138-pounds, but he knew right from the start he was facing a challenge. It was here he went up against Cherry Creek’s Matt Finesilver and was pinned by the Bruin’s stalwart in 3:54. Lakewood came through with a pair of champions with Isaac Dinette winning at 126 and Drew Strong at 285. Dinette won his title beating Northglenn’s Rocky Nava, 8-7, while Strong defeated Mullen’s Sam Deseriere, 8-4. “This is certainly good,” said Dinette after his title win. “I’ve overcome Ulcer Tizcolitis and the key now is to stay healthy. I feel that I can come through with a good season.” Added Nava, “I think it’s been a good tournament, but in my case, the better wrestler won tonight. I’ll be ready to wrestle him again and I do hope that will happen this season. He got me excited to wrestle hard and to become an effective competitor.” Strong, who drew a bye in the first round, pinned Trent Henington of Highlands Ranch in 1:14 in the quarterfinals. He followed with a narrow win, 3-1, against Fruita’s Clayton Voytilla before beating Deseriere. “It’s going to be a long road as there are certainly a lot of good guys in the weight,” Strong

said. “I just want to stay focused and do what I can for the team. I was sixth in state last year in the Junior Varsity tournament and now I want to focus on making state with our varsity.” The highest placer for Arapahoe was 132-pound John Daniel at second. He lost to Coronado’s Jess Hankin, 15-3, but is encour-
aged by his success to that point. “I pushed, but I’m still a little out of shape,” Daniel said. “I just need to get out and improve and get back in the right rhythm. I just want to be the best I can be for the team. I was third last year in this meet, so this is certainly an improvement.”

SALOME’S STARS FOR THE WEEK OF DEC 8, 2014
ARIES (Mar 21 to Apr 19) That change in holiday travel plans might be more vexing than you’d expected. But try to take it in stride. Also, it couldn’t hurt to use that Aries charm to coax out some helpful cooperation. TAURUS (Apr 20 to May 20) Your Bovine determination helps you deal with an unforeseen complication. And, as usual, you prove that when it comes to a challenge, you have what it takes to take it on. GEMINI (May 21 to Jun 20) Although a romantic theme dominates much of the week, all those warm and fuzzy feelings don’t interfere with the more pragmatic matters you need to take care of.

CANCER (Jun 21 to Jul 22) Best not to ignore those doubts about an upcoming decision. Instead, recheck the facts you were given to make sure nothing important was left out. A weekend surprise awaits you. LEO (Jul 23 to Aug 22) No time for a catnap -- yet. You might still have to straighten out one or two factors so that you can finally assure yourself of the truth about a troubling workplace situation. Stay with it. VIRGO (Aug 23 to Sept 22) News from an old friend could lead to an unexpected (but nonetheless welcome) reunion with someone who had once been very special in your life. Be open to the possibilities. LIBRA (Sept 23 to Oct 22) It might be time for a family council. The sooner those problems are resolved, the sooner you can move ahead with your holiday preparations. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by. SCORPIO (Oct 23 to Nov 21) Take some time out to give more attention to a personal relationship that seems to be suffering from a sense of emotional neglect. Provide that much-needed reassurance. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 to Dec 21) Cheer up. That unusual circumstance that might faze most people can be handled pretty well by the savvy Sagittarian. Look at it as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 to Jan 19) Someone you believe has hurt you in the past might now need your help. Reaching out could be difficult. But the generous Goat will be able to do the right thing, as always. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 to Feb 18) Prioritizing is an important part of your pre-holiday scheduling. Try to give time both to your workday responsibilities and those personal matters you might have neglected. PISCES (Feb 19 to Mar 20) With the vestiges of your anger about that painful incident fading, you can now focus all your energy on the more positive aspects of your life, including that personal situation. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of bringing your own strong sense of reassurance to others and encouraging them to hope. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

failed launch attempt. Due to wind delays and other issues, Orion remained grounded at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida until a second attempt the following morning, which took off without a hitch. Orion is part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s goal of sending humans to asteroids and Mars.
and on Dec. 5, Orion orbited the Earth twice, spending around 4.5 hours in the atmosphere before splashing down into the Pacific Ocean. Orion was designed to go farther into space than previous rockets, and involved contributions the work of many Colorado companies. The spacecraft was designed by Jefferson County-based Lockheed Martin Space Systems, and its cameras and antennas were provided by Ball Aerospace in Westminster. It launched into space on a Delta IV Heavy rocket made by United Launch Alliance, based in Centennial. Lockheed Martin principal engineer
Darrell Williams has been invested in space travel since college after he watched Apollo 17 take off in 1972. Since then, he’s worked to make sure mankind got back in space. “Typically through the years,we don’t see this much excitement revolved around space,” he said. “So it’s really great to see people actively engaged in what’s going in the space program.” Mark Walsh, of Denver, was up early for the first launch attempt, and not just for the fun of it. A ULA employee, he worked on the admissions and separation systems for the rocket. He said he was pretty anxious in the hours leading up to the launch,
but was confident the spacecraft would make it in the air. “It’s a good vehicle, but it’s a pretty big mission with a lot of stuff riding on it,” he said. Orion’s next mission around the moon is set for 2017,followed by its first manned mission in 2021. The spacecraft has a maximum capacity of six people, but would mostly likely only host four. In 2032 Orion is scheduled to launch for Mars in 2032. The trip there should take about 10 months.
