Westminster’s Nancy McNally fights medical challenges while keeping a steady hand as mayor

McNally has been open about her struggles with cancer treatment but praises friends and family for their support

Each Westminster City Councilor can recite what they did in their ofcial capacity during the previous week before each regular City Council meeting. Mostly, councilors report on the community events they

attended and the results from advisory meetings they sat in on.

While most of those oral reports are fairly dry, they’ve become intensely personal for Mayor Nancy McNally.

Matter-of-factly, the 73-year-old McNally has recounted for the council and the public the health prob-

Nally said. “I ask people to be transparent. So why not ask the same from me?”

Her recovery from her surgery and cancer treatments left her so weak that in January she told an audience at a town hall in Front Range Community College that she may not be able to nish the meeting.

“ e doctor told me to try and go as long as it could, but don’t try to push it,” McNally told the packed crowd at College Hill Library. She nished the meeting.

Her biggest challenge came in May when she was hospitalized for 10 days as doctors tried to save her kidneys. McNally said she reacted badly to some new chemotherapy medication used to ght her breast cancer. e medication drove her blood sugar levels dangerously high. At one point, doctors talked to her about possibly needing kidney dialysis.  She said she didn’t think about giving up altogether, but the white ag was close by.

“I told Larry (her husband) that I just didn’t think I could say yes to another pill,” McNally said. “I was just that tired.”

“But I didn’t want to waste time on

levels. McNally said by reaching out, she gathered the strength she needed to make a medical comeback.

“Don’t be afraid to talk to others and don’t be afraid to be your own advocate,” McNally said. “You can’t do this on your own, accept the help.”

She said she’s also accepted help from her colleagues on the city council. On the days she doesn’t feel well enough to attend an o cial function, they will pitch in and ll her spot.

“I have six who can take my place and do a great job,” McNally said.

Life is too short for grudges

McNally’s un appable nature is an ideal attribute for a modern-day mayor, said Jan Kulmann, the mayor of neighboring ornton.

“Nancy McNally is truly an exceptional leader,” Kulmann said via email. “Her composed approach to challenges has always impressed me. Moreover, her courage in confronting her cancer diagnosis underscores her unwavering ability to lead through any crisis.”

New England’s MLS Goes Its Own Way, Ch allenging DOJ Regarding NAR Settlement

On June 20, MLS Property Information Network (MLS PIN) informed its 44,600 New England subscribers that, effective immediately, they could submit listings with no offer of buyer agent compensation. That MLS field isn’t being removed, but will now designate the seller’s offer of compensation, not the broker’s.

The article about this development in Inman news service got me thinking about the rationale behind the litigation against co-op commissions and the 1st Amendment implications of prohibiting the display of a seller’s offer of an incentive for other agents to bring a buyer for their listing.

buyer’s agent to compensate. This is our policy at Golden Real Estate — a win/ win policy, under which we earn more for handling both sides of the transaction, and the seller pays less overall.

for them.

But let’s rethink that concept. Now, the listing commission in the above scenario would be 2.8%, not 5.6%, and the listing agreement would specify that the seller offers 2.8% to the buyer’s agent who represents the buyer for his home. The MLS would then have a field for displaying the seller’s offer of compensation, not the listing broker’s offer. This is where freedom of speech comes into play.

Let’s remember who has the resources to pay agents representing buyers. Unless buyers are paying cash, they’re already hard pressed to come up with the down payment and the fees charged by their loan officers. Those fees, except for the appraisal, are simply added to the principal amount of the mortgage loan, so they’re not out of pocket for buyers, but you better believe that a 4- or 5-figure agent compensation amount will be hard felt by buyers.

The many class action lawsuits regarding co-op commissions have echoed the same assertion, alleging that the sharing of commissions between listing and buyer brokers inflates seller costs and is a conspiracy in restraint of trade, a violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act. The change suggested in this column would, I believe, invalidate that claim.

MLS PIN made the following points in its June 20th email to subscribers:

The practice has, until now, been for the seller to agree to a listing commission which was high enough for the listing broker to share it with the agent who produced the buyer. For example, a listing commission might be 5.6%, specifying that 2.8% would be offered to a cooperating buyer’s agent.

Many, but not all, listing agents would insert in the contract a provision that the listing commission would be reduced by, say, 1%, if there was no

It would be stated in the listing agreement that sellers are free to offer zero compensation to brokers who produce the buyer for their home. Because offers of compensation by sellers would be published for buyers and their agents to see when searching for listings, sellers would be incentivized to offer such compensation. It’s okay for the seller to offer zero compensation, but if that results in few showings and no offers, the seller might change his mind later on. Listings suffer when the “days on market” number grows. I suspect most sellers will agree to offer something in order to increase showings and offers. It has always made sense to me that agents for buyers be compensated by the sellers. The builders of new homes will continue to offer compensation to buyer agents, with or without that offer being displayed on the MLS, knowing that failure to do so would only drive buyers to their competitors. The failure of any home seller to do the same would have the same effect.

Builders must already be excited by the conventional wisdom that buyers will have to pay the brokers who represent them, knowing the great advantage that such a belief will increase business

On the other hand, any compensation paid to a buyer’s agent by the seller is not paid upfront, but is taken from the seller’s proceeds, which makes it much less painful. But it needs to be a conscious decision of the seller to make that offer, just like any other incentive — for example, providing money to buy down the buyer’s interest rate. The shock of seeing the buyer’s agent’s commission on the seller’s settlement statement instead of the single commission payment to the listing agent is no doubt what triggered that class action lawsuits from sellers complaining, “Why am I paying my buyer’s broker?” With the decision to incentivize buyer agents being more conscious for sellers, that shock will not be as great.

“Offers of compensation, if any, will be made by the seller. Listing brokers and cooperating brokers will no longer split commissions.

“Listing agreements must disclose that the seller is neither required to offer compensation nor required to accede to any cooperating broker’s request for compensation. The listing broker must disclose this to the seller before the seller signs the listing agreement.

“If a seller elects to offer compensation, the listing agreement must also say that the cooperating broker will be an intended thirdparty beneficiary of the agreement with the right to enforce the same.

“Before posting a listing, the listing broker must certify, in a checkbox designated for this purpose in Pinergy [the MLS app], that the listing broker has notified the seller of the seller’s rights not to offer compensation and not to accede to a cooperating broker’s request for compensation.”

Evans takes Congressional District 8 nomination

Republican winner to face Caraveo in November

Gabe Evans claimed 77.6% of the Republican primary vote in early and uno cial returns, on the way to defeating Dr. Janak Joshi to claim the nomination for the Congressional District 8.

Evans told his supporters Tuesday night he was ready to take on Democratic incumbent Yadira Caraveo in the general election in November. Evans said Caraveo and the Democratic party is responsible for a bad economy and a weak border with Mexico.

“We know my Democratic opponent...voted for those failed policies,” Evans said. “We know we have problems but now we can take all those on.”

Caraveo defeated Republican Barbara Kirkmeyer 48.4% to 47.7% in the rst-ever general election for the newly created 8th Congressional District in 2022.

She was unopposed in the Democratic primary, collecting 28,356 votes and her party’s nomination, according to uno cial returns.

Caraveo, a ornton pediatrician and former state lawmaker, represents a district that covers parts of

Adams, Weld, and Larimer counties north of the Denver metro area. e seat is rated a toss-up by national election forecasters and could determine which party controls the House after this year’s election, according to Colorado Politics.

Caraveo was unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Evans was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives in 2022 and has been endorsed by House Speaker Mike Johnson and former President Donald Trump.

Before being elected to the Colorado House, Evans worked as a police lieutenant and served in the U.S. Army and Colorado Army National Guard from 2007 to 2019.

Besides his endorsements, Evans also points to his performance at the Congressional District 8 Republican assembly in March as proof he is the best candidate to be the GOP pick to take on Caraveo.

“Grassroots Republicans spoke loud and clear when they gave me a 62% victory at the CD 8 assembly. at’s the endorsement that matters to me, not a handful of Colorado Republican Party bosses who live outside my district,” Evans said in an emailed message.

“I’m proud to have the endorsement of dozens of Colorado and national leaders – including President Trump – as I work to unite the party against Joe Biden and his far-left allies

in Congress, such as Yadira Caraveo, so we can secure the border, restore respect for the rule of law, and bring down prices and the cost of living,” Evans said.

e Colorado GOP endorsed Joshi who served in the Colorado House of Representatives from 2013-2017. e state party said they decided to endorse Joshi due to “his higher likelihood of defeating the incumbent Democrat in the general election,” according to the political website Ballotpedia. e Republican GOP said Evans’ refusal to complete their questionnaire for eligible candidates also led to their endorsement of Joshi.

Joshi has not returned requests for a comment on the election.

Joshi, besides serving in the State House, lists his professional experience as owning a medical clinic and dialysis centers, according to Ballotpedia.

“I am the only candidate in this race with a proven conservative record to show that actions speak louder than words,” Yoshi said in his Ballotpedia excerpt.

Joshi, who immigrated to the United States from India more than 50 years ago, is a former physician who voluntarily surrendered his medical license in 2008, a year after the state suspended his license following an admission to “unprofessional conduct” in the care of a 76-year-old patient, according to Colorado Politics.

Daugherty defeats Ezeadi for Dem State Senate 19 nomination

Arvada lawyer Lindsay Daugherty appeared to be the easy winner over Westminster City Councilor Obi Ezeadi for the Democratic nomination for State Senate District 19 in Tuesday’s primary voting.

With 99% of the vote counted, Daugherty had over 64% of the vote compared to Ezeadi’s 35%, according to the Associated Press.

Ezeadi and Daugherty were vying to occupy the Senate seat currently being held by Rachel Zenzinger, who will be term-limited by November.

Sam Bandimere ran unopposed for the Republican nomination for the seat. Ryan Van Gundy is the Liber-

Phillips claims nomination in House District 31

Phillips will face GOP’s Pitchforth in November

STAFF REPORT

Former ornton City Councilor Jacque Phillips will face Republican Heidi Pitchforth in November to claim the House District 13 seat.

Phillips defeated incumbent Julia Marvin with 2,487 votes to Marvin’s 2,064 votes in a sparse voting.

Phillips now faces ornton Republican Heidi Pitchforth in her second bid for the House District 31 seat. Pitchforth ultimately lost to Said Sharbini in 2022 by an 8% margin. Pitchforth was unchallenged for the Republican nomination and collected 2,525 votes on Tuesday to secure the Republican nomination.

tarian candidate.

Daugherty has represented House District 24 since 2021. She said she is seeking a place in the Senate because it has a “greater reach” politically.

“I think I am ready for it,” Daugherty said. She would be the only female attorney in the Colorado Senate if she is elected in November’s balloting.

She’s poised to face Republican Sam Bandimere, who was unopposed in his bid to win the GOP nomination. Bandimere collected 9,033 votes in Tuesday’s primary voting.

Daugherty collected endorsements from Gov. Jared Polis and Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser.

As a private attorney, Daugherty represented the interests of children in court and said recently that she has sponsored legislation to support Colorado’s youth.

“I will always make sure the voices of youth are heard and will work to make sure they get the services they need at the right time,” Daugherty said.

Phillips and Pitchforth also face Independent Lawrence X. Olguin for the seat, according to the Secretary of State’s o ce. It’s not the rst time Marvin and Phillips have faced each other over the House District 31 seat. Both were in line to replace Sharbini after he resigned in December. He cited nancial pressures and a di cult work environment in the House, according to Colorado News Line.

Former Thornton Councilors e Democratic vacancy committee voted 9-7 to pick Marvin to ll his spot, over Phillips. Marvin co-sponsored six successful bills, including a bill allowing local government to adopt car idling standards that are tougher than the state’s standard, expanding a mentorship program for teachers and allowing the state board of health to regulate how pregnant mothers are tested for syphilis. All were signed by Governor Polis.

Boebert claims her path is clear to CD4 seat

Primaries set stage for race against Calvarese in November

e results of the primaries in late June sets up a race between Republican Lauren Boebert and Democrat Trisha Calvarese for Colorado’s 4th

Congressional District this November.

Boebert, who currently holds a congressional seat in Colorado’s 3rd District on the Western Slope, beat ve conservative challengers with 43% of votes. Calvarese secured her primary win by beating two Democratic candidates with 45% of votes.

Boebert, who has the endorsement of Donald Trump, seems con dent that she will win in November, saying in a statement that she and her

Republican colleagues will “stand strong with President Trump when he retakes the White House.”

Boebert promised to continue to be a “conservative ghter.”

“I will continue to travel the miles, make the phone calls, and show up in communities of every size and background to earn your votes this November,” she said. “I cannot thank 4th District voters enough for trusting me to e ectively represent their interests.”

In December, Boebert posted a video posted to social media announcing plans to leave her 3rd District seat. “It’s the right move for me personally, and it’s the right decision for those who support our conservative movement,” she said.

She also alleged that “Hollywood elites” were attempting to “buy the 3rd District” for Democrats.

Mullica, Henson, Baca claim Democratic County Commissioner primary wins

Candidates vying for three open seats set stage for November

With three seats on the line for the Adams County Commission, the stage is set for November’s election that could change the face of the ve-member board.

Adams County Democrats selected Julie Duran Mullica as their candidate to replace the outgoing Eva Henry in District 1. She defeated Valerie Vigil with 17,073 votes to Vigil’s 11,037, according to the uno cial voting tally June 26.

Commissioner District 1 includes the eastern part of Brighton and ornton.

Mullica served as a Northglenn City Councilor until she moved out

of the city and into ornton in April 2022. She is married to State Senator Kyle Mullica, who represents ornton and Northglenn through Federal Heights in Senate District 24.

Vigil is a school counselor in District Adams 12 Five Star and the daughter of Val Vigil, who served in the State House from 1999 through 2007.

Mullica faces Republican Shelly McClure, who claimed 16,039 votes and did not have a challenger

in the primary.

In Commissioner District 2, which runs from ornton east through much of Commerce City, ornton City Councilor Kathy Henson had no challengers and collected 25,929 votes. She’ll face Commerce City’s Bernadette Tedesco, who is registered as a member of the Colorado Center Party.

In District 5, which includes the eastern portion of Brighton, south to

Interstate 70 and east about 65 miles to Washington County line, Incumbent Democrat Lynn Baca collected 25,997 votes. She was unopposed for the party’s nomination.

Republican Jim Wood is also unopposed. Wood picked up 18,878 votes in Tuesday’s GOP primary. Winners in November will join Commissioners Emma Pinter in District 3 and Steve O’Dorisio in District 4. Both are Democrats.

Funding is split equally between urban and rural areas, and a large percentage of grants support regions dened as historically disadvantaged or areas of persistent poverty. It’s meant to help state and local governments to pursue multi-modal and multijurisdictional projects that are more di cult to fund through other grant programs.

“After decades of underinvestment, the condition of America’s infrastructure is now nally getting better instead of worse – and today we proudly announce our support for 148 more projects in communities of every size across the country,” Buttigieg said in a press statement. e program earmarks $25 million to pay for nal design, right-of-way, and construction of Complete Street enhancements on 104th Avenue be-

tween Colorado Blvd to the South Platte River Bridge.

ornton, Commerce City and Adams County have been working on widening that stretch of the road, which is also State Highway 44. e road is mostly two lanes between Colorado Boulevard in ornton and the intersection with Highway 85 in Commerce City. Plans call for widening the road to ve lanes — two lanes in either direction with a center turn lane or median.

Engineers have drawn basic maps of the entire project and they presented those at an open house meeting Nov. 29 at ornton’s Carpenter Park Recreation Center.

ose designs show the basic layout of the road expansion, complete with new intersections, bike lanes and sidewalks, but lack the minute

details such as rights of way, utilities, road grades and more. Engineers then said that with full funding, the project could get underway in 2025. e new grants would also set aside $4.8 million to pay for design work for the reconstruction of the I-270 and Vasquez Boulevard cloverleaf interchange, implementing a new pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure in the area and enhancing the infrastructure through the interchange. e plan would include two gradeseparated pedestrian tunnels, ADA sidewalks and ramps, implementation of two water quality ponds on the western side of the interchange and new guardrails.

According to the press release the Department received almost $13 billion in requests for the money available this year.

Blitz Build e ort creates accessible ramp and patio for Thornton couple

A group of volunteer home builders did more than just install over $22,000 in upgrades for Jorgette and Neil Davis, who has been paralyzed from the chest down and uses a wheelchair since last October.

“ ese people,” said a teary-eyed Jorgette as she gestured toward those responsible for the latest Blitz Build, “ ey picked us up o our butts and got us up again.”

In hopes of making their ornton home easier for Neil to maneuver,

Jorgette called the nonpro t Home Builders Foundation for help. e group for 30 years has marshalled skilled volunteers and collaborative partners to create home modi cations that allow home-bound residents greater access, reinforce safety and equip them with the ability to tackle everyday tasks, according to a news release from the foundation.

HBF has completed home modications including ramps, room alterations, bathrooms, and much more for 2,000 individuals and their families, the release states.

“We just want to help people in rough situations and provide them with accessibility to make for a better life,” said Joe Stein, a volunteer with HBF. He headed up the organization’s Blitz Build e ort at the Davis home which was done free of charge.

annual initiative created by the HBF during which a series of home ramps are built and installed for individuals with physical disabilities across eight counties in the Denver metro area, Stein said.      e labor and materials for the ramps are underwritten by sponsors and participating teams so there is no charge to the client, HBF states. Since 2011, 220 ramps – with a total retail value of more than $1 million –have been built and installed as part of Blitz Build, according to the HBF news release.

Stairs, curbs and doorframes are huge obstacles for those using a mobility assistance device like a wheelchair or walker, according to the HBF. But a residential ramp that enhances safety costs $5,000, which many can’t a ord because they are wrestling with medical bills and lost income, the HBF states.

Celebrate our freedom this year

While families are hosting BBQ parties in their backyards, attending reworks displays in their respective communities - both large and small - or enjoying their own illegal reworks along with watermelon and homemade ice cream, let’s not forget the real meaning of our July 4th holiday.

It’s all about the freedoms which we Americans enjoy but tend to take for granted.

Let’s stop and re ect on where we came from back in 1776. We gave British King George the boot in controlling our fate and our founding fathers declared our independence from Britain on July 4, 1776. e second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence. is historic, bold action announced America’s colonies separating from Great Britain.

“When in the course of human events…”

Remember those famous words from your high school American History class? at is the opening phrase of the Declaration of Independence. It wouldn’t hurt if all of us did a Google search and read this Declaration.

CROSS CURRENTS

Growing up, independence and self-su ciency were always synonymous with masculinity for me. e idea that I could do it on my own, that I would be “less than” if I asked for a helping hand, was an ideal I not only believed in, but strived to live up to. I asked for as little help as possible. Facing the di cult task of processing my emotions as I entered adolescence, I was overwhelmed and underequipped. Seeking support never crossed my mind. e more pain I endured, the more resolute I became to conquer it on my own. I found a magic solution — the illusion of control via drugs and alcohol.

e immediate oblivion brought on by substances allowed me to trick

Thornton discussing interim mayoral and council appointments

e ornton City Council will decide whether to approve an ordinance to put a Charter Amendment on the November 5 election pertaining to changing how mayoral and city council vacancies are to be lled outside of regular city elections.

Currently, ornton’s City Charter states that “…city council shall appoint an eligible person to ll such vacancy to serve the remainder of the term of o ce that was vacated. Such appointment shall be by a majority of the members of the Council in o ce at the time.”

e proposed amendment would “require a vacancy in the o ce of Mayor or Councilmember be lled by a special election within 120 days of the vacancy, but not within 90 days of a regular election when greater than one year remains in the vacated term at the time the vacancy takes place.”

myself into believing I had taken control. However, the escape I found in substances lessened over time, leaving me without the relief I so desperately needed. For years my stubborn worship of self-su ciency kept me in the living hell of addiction. When I was nally beaten down enough to ask for help, I was morti ed, disgusted by my weakness, and convinced of my failure as a man. is is the unfortunate reality for

If the remaining term of o ce is less than one year, the council would appoint someone. Members of the current city council believe that the people should ll such vacancies as opposed to the long-standing policy of the seated city council making such appointments. Too often, the majority of the council has selected “one of their own” which may not be the choice of the people. is truly is a step forward giving the people their say on who they want to represent them. Now that is democracy folks!

ose ornton Councilmembers are to be applauded. Yes, there is a cost for putting such propositions on the ballot, but democracy is not cost free. Hopefully, other area city councils which have such appointments by city council in their city charter language will be enlightened by this action and want to make the same type of change or perhaps motivated citizens will take up the cause.

Colorado Democrat legislature spent the state into the red

As most of us know, the recent state legislative session was a “freefor-all” among Democrats to see who could come up with the most

ideas to spend our tax money. Some 30 bills were passed and signed by Governor Polis which, when combined, caused a problem: ey did such a ne job of giving money away that the current scal year (which ended June 30) will show Colorado state government an estimated $164 million in the red.

According to Republican State Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer, who sits of the Joint Budget Committee, this dilemma could have been avoided. Lawmakers were warned in April that they were at risk of dipping into the state’s rainy day fund cash reserves.

Instead, the Democrats “piled on” with approval of large tax credits and spent more in the 2023-2024 General Fund. e problem gets bigger with the next two ensuing scal years.

e legislature will have to deal with the current short fall when they convene in January. ere is more to the story which could cause the state budget-makers to face even more chaos. ere are two 800-pound gorillas lurking around the November 5th election.

many men grappling with addiction. “Man up” far too frequently becomes the mantra for many tragic stories of demise into alcoholic insanity and death. at story nearly became my reality.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, mental illness is less prevalent in men than women, but it often goes untreated in men. Men are two to three times more likely to misuse drugs than women, and according to Mental Health America, men die by suicide at a rate four times higher than women.

To become a healthy man, I had to learn to accept that I needed help, and then practice asking for it. e rst time was excruciating,

then it became less so over time. It’s become the foundation on which my recovery from addiction has been built, the gateway to nding a level of peace and serenity I never thought possible. I’m thankful for the opportunity to become an example to other men and help lift the stigma around asking for help. is is a process. Six years into my recovery I still have di culty asking for help and fall into old patterns of arrogance and independence. e more I ask for help, the easier it is to keep asking. Practicing reaching out for small pieces of advice on a regular basis helps me seek support when I’m dealing with a deeper and heavier problem.

Reducing

your property taxes versus higher school funding

Two ballot propositions are poised to be on the ballot which, if approved, would signi cantly lighten property taxes loads for property owners both soon and permanently.

One would be a Constitutional amendment which would permanently freeze growth of property tax revenues at 4% annually. In the future, we would not be faced with the current huge property tax bills we are having to pay.

e second proposition which is yet to get on the ballot is a statutory measure which would cut property taxes by an estimated $2.25 billion according to non-partisan legislative analysts.

Furthermore, the proposal would require the state to reimburse school districts and local governments for their lost property tax revenues. According to Mike Ferrandino, state budget director, if either proposal passes, the legislature would be faced with having to make draconian cuts to re-balance the state’s nances.

So, the state starts July being approximately $164 million in the hole and faces the potential of $2-3 billion in lost revenues via the November election. Wow, really good planning. Let’s remember who caused this mess.

e other thing to understand is that with all of this spending your TABOR refunds have been whittled down to a shadow of their former selves. Major tax credits to help the poor were spent right out from under your TABOR credit or check. e Dems found money slated for TABOR refunds and spent it quickly. Sorry for the bad news!

Crystal ball predictions

While I am not a futurist or soothsayer, I will give you my two-cents on the above two ballot issues: Coloradoans are tired of having to watch their hard earned money buy less and less each week.

In ation has forced families to compromise on their grocery shopping, entertainment, health care and more. Housing opportunities are out of sight. Vehicle purchases are harder to swing with high interest rates still in place. Voters are going to see Initiatives 50 and 180 (mentioned above) on the ballot and see the opportunity for noticeable property

tax savings. Why wouldn’t they vote “YES” on both propositions?

Certainly, the argument to keepnances whole for school districts and local governments, which depend heavily on property taxes, would be compelling.

However, if it boils down to, on-theone-hand, saving hundreds of dollars in taxes each year versus keeping schools and local governments nancially whole; folks are going to opt for saving hundreds of dollars. It’s that simple. If times were not as tight as they are now, perhaps it would be di erent. Maybe not.

Save the Poudre group announces plan to sue

Most folks who have followed the City of ornton’s Water Pipeline saga for the past few years were likely not surprised with the recent announcement by anti-pipeline Save the Poudre (River) group. While the Larimer County Board of Commissioners nally approved the necessary permit in May to allow the ornton water pipeline to be built in the county using a speci c alignment with a huge number of conditions, it didn’t mean everyone involved was “happy as a lark.”

To the contrary, the Save the Poudre group, which has been an aggressive opponent all along, says it plans to sue ornton. Speci cally, they contend that the city should take their water rights down the Poudre River instead of the pipeline.

Save the Poudre spokesman Gary Wockner said

“Using the river as the conveyance would increase the health of the river in Fort Collins, the riparian corridor along the river and the recreational opportunity at the new Whitewater Park in downtown” (Fort Collins).

ornton has been clear-spoken all the time in opposing taking their water downstream in the Poudre River given the degradation of water quality to ornton water users. So, hang on for now to see what comes of the group’s threat to litigate the approval of the needed permit.

Will the litigation hold up construction of the pipeline in Larimer County? I’m sure ornton o cials would ght such a delay given development pressures.

With one simple swish of his bug net, University of Colorado entomologist Adrian Carper deftly caught three di erent species of bees that had been buzzing around the Denver Botanic Gardens.

Carper identi ed them to his tour group as an American bumblebee, a sweat bee and a leafcutter bee — just a few of the more than 1,000 species of bees native to the state.  “ ere are so many things that sometimes we don’t see at rst glance but are there,” he said.

As part of the Denver Botanic Gardens’ Big Day of Bugs, Carper and others shared their expertise on pollinators with hundreds of

visitors, celebrating the important role the bugs and birds play.

Colorado’s colorful biodiversity is in large part thanks to the thousands of species of pollinators, including bees, butter ies, hummingbirds, beetles and moths, that call it home. Worldwide, more than 80% of owering plants rely on pollinators and pollination is crucial for producing fruit and other foods.

Pollinators play such a crucial role in the environment that Colorado named June as pollinator month in an e ort to educate about them and raise awareness of the issues leading to population decline, including habitat loss, climate change and pesticides.

June also kicked o the prime time for pollinators, according to John Murgel, a horticulture and natural resources specialist for the Douglas County Colorado State University Extension O ce.

“If you were going to pick one time to look for pollinators and see a diversity, this is it,” Murgel said.

For those interested in helping build up pollinator populations, there are a number of ways to help.

Murgel said anyone with an outdoor space can help combat habitat loss by planting owers, shrubs or trees that have pollen or nectar, particularly native wild owers like the aptly named beebalm.

“One thing folks can consider do-

ing is build habitat back into their landscapes,” he said. “It’s an ‘if you build it, they will come’ model for pollinators. If you have oral resources, you’re going to see pollinators.”

Murgel said it’s ideal to try and plant a variety of owers and shrubs that ower throughout the year. He added that local CSU extension o ces can recommend speci c plants depending on the area and resources available.

Another local resource is the People and Pollinators Action Network, which also o ers grants to support building new habitats.

Colorado is home to more than 1,000 species of bees, as well as thousands of other pollinators, like butterflies, beetles, moths and hummingbirds.

POLLINATORS

In addition to owers, Murgel said an ideal pollinator habitat has access to soil, nesting sites, like rocks, mulch or sticks, and a water source. He also encouraged people to avoid weed fabric.

“ e more diverse habitat you can build, the more pollinators you stand to see and to help,” Murgel said.

Another big way to combat pollinator declines is to stop using pesticides, Murgel said.

In order to keep track of pollina-

tor populations, there are also volunteer networks that survey areas for di erent species. CSU extension o ces have the native bee watch program, which trains volunteers to identify species and then submit reports.

“You can do it in your yard or your local park, any place there are owers,” Murgel said. “ en you submit your observations so we can track how many native bees we’re seeing in habitat fragments.”

Similarly, the Butter y Pavillion, an invertebrate museum in Westminster, o ers the Colorado Butter-

y Monitoring Network to train volunteers to track butter y species.

A number of educational events also focus on pollinators, including the Big Day of Bugs and the Butter y Pavillion’s Pollinator Palooza.  ornton residents Hailey, Shannon and Melissa Castillo, who took one of Carper’s bug tours, said they would be implementing several things they learned about at the Big Day of Bug in their new garden to support bees and hummingbirds.

“Now we know it’s not just about the owers, but also the environment,” Hailey Castillo said.

Hannah Craft, associate director of learning engagement and inter-

pretation with the Denver Botanic Gardens, said awareness and education is a key rst step to helping pollinators. She said surveys found that some visitors reduced their water consumption, planted di erent species or talked to a friend about conservation after learning about plants and pollinators.

“I think it’s exciting to move the needle on that and get people thinking,” Craft said. “ ings like climate change can seem really overwhelming but facilitating these conversations is a great place to start.”

Murgel agreed.

“For tiny creatures, tiny actions can be a really big deal,” he said.

DMNS Explores ’The Power of Poison’

Ever since most of us were young, we’ve been exposed to stories that include poisoning of some kind — think about classics like Snow White and Greek mythology. And poisoning still features in murder mysteries and true crime sagas that enthrall adults.

e Denver Museum of Nature & Science’s newest exhibit, “ e Power of Poison,” explores the natural history of poisons, how and why they were developed by plants and animals, and the role poison has played in human society for centuries.

“ is is the second time we’ve hosted this exhibit. e rst was in 2015 and we heard from audiences that they loved it so much, we decided to bring it back,” said Jenna Chervin, program coordinator for DMNS. “What’s really cool

COMING ATTRACTIONS

about the exhibit is there’s so much to it, we couldn’t t it all last time. So, this time around, we’re able to include some new features.”

“ e Power of Poison,” organized by the American Museum of Natural History, will be on display at the museum, 2001 Colorado Blvd. in Denver, through January 5. Access to the exhibit is part of a general admission ticket to DMNS.

e exhibition takes a multi-faceted and multi-media approach to poison, beginning with which kinds of plants and animals developed toxicity and how they use it for pro-

tection. Guests will walk through the Colombian jungle as they learn about the poisonous creatures that inhabit the environment.

From there, “ e Power of Poison” delves into mankind’s history with poisons, including stories from Greece and Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.” is portion also features real people who were connected to poison (like Egypt’s Cleopatra) and whether the stories about them are based in fact. ere is even a performance hosted every half hour that involves the true story of a dairy farmer and his family who died under mysterious circumstances in the 1830s.

e nal piece of the exhibit is focused on the bene ts of poison and the way science is harnessing these substances to make medicines and cure diseases. According to pro-

vided information, it uncovers how “scientists are studying poison’s effects on human cells to protect, repair and heal our own bodies and improve our health.”

ere’s always been a sense of mystery and danger around poisons, but this fascinating exhibit peels back the layers to let visitors see how important these toxic substances are.

“ e exhibit is visually stunning. is one really is for everyone,” Chervin said. “Whether you want to read every panel or talk to volunteers and experience a show, there’s so much to learn and so many ways to learn it.”

Prairie View alum picked to play for Lakers

NBA team drafts Dalton Knecht

Like an old Beatles’ tune, Dalton Knecht’s road to the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association has been a long and winding road.

e Lakers used the 17th pick to choose the former Prairie View standout during the opening night of the NBA draft on June 26. As a senior, he averaged 21 points per game for the underHawks. Even with those numbers, Knecht did not receive an o er to play NCAA Division I basketball.

He made stops at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling and the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. He nished his college career at the University of Tennessee, where he averaged almost 22 points per game and almost ve rebounds per contest.

Knecht led the University of Tennessee into the Midwest Regional nal of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament and earned Player of the Year accolades in the Southeastern Conference.

Even before that

In an online interview with TU’s basketball program, his mom, Carrie Knecht, remembered one day in particular … April 19, 2001.

“I remember that day really well. I was way past my due date,” she said. “I wanted him to be born. I think he was, like, 11 days late. And he was just very energetic, screaming. So, the name that he wanted (Patrick Swayze’s character from the movie “Roadhouse”) kind of t. It just suited him.”

She said her son was the sort who “always played outside, rain or snow or shine.”

“I think his kindergarten teachers sent him on a lap around the school,” she said. “He was just so energetic.”

Dalton Knecht always found himself playing against kids older than

he was, according to his father, Corey.

“I could see that he could hold his own,” Corey Knecht said. “Granted, he was a lot smaller than everybody else. But he was still holding his own, just so determined to get better.”

Dalton Knecht was ineligible one year in high school, and his mother knew what to do .. trips to the library three or four times a week. It came with the understanding that the school work had to be nished before he could step on the court and play basketball. However, there were doubts about whether he could play basketball in college because of his grades. e search for a college

His friend told him, ‘You should bet on yourself,’” Carrie Knecht said. “He’s held that really close to his heart, and it really helped guide him in that decision.” e coaching sta showed up –late in the day when his ight landed – to meet him when Knecht arrived at the University of Tennessee.

“I couldn’t be more proud of him,” Corey Knecht said. “Putting in the hard work is one thing, but staying humble as well.”

Much of Colorado could be pushed into drought by late summer

Colorado has seen an average water year so far, but looking ahead, climate experts say much of the state could fall into drought conditions and struggle to nd relief.

Colorado’s very average snowpack has o cially melted away from all 115 federal snow monitoring stations in the state, as of this week. Reservoir levels are at 94%, just slightly below average, while precipitation was at exactly 100% of the 30-year median, according to a recent Water Conditions Monitoring Committee meeting.

Heat, however, has been on the rise. Even summer showers may not be enough to combat its e ects, or to keep the state away from drought.

“Really the entire state is at risk of developing drought this summer,” Assistant State Climatologist Becky Bolinger told listeners during the meeting. “A strong monsoon would be really helpful. It would limit that risk of worsening drought, particularly over the Four Corners. … For now, it’s looking like that is not as likely, and that it’s going to be a pretty rough summer.”

Climate experts track precipitation, temperature, soil moisture and other factors year-round to gauge water supplies and storage for farmers, city utility managers, reservoir operators and residents around the state.

is year’s outlook has some of those water users looking out for impacts to sh populations, recreation opportunities, irrigation supplies and wild res.

“Without much rain, wild re will de nitely be a pretty serious concern,” said Adrian Bergere, executive director of the San Miguel Watershed Coalition in southwestern Colorado.

e period from October 2023 through May ranked in the top 10 warmest time periods across a signi cant majority of the state when compared with a 129-year historical record, Bolinger said.

Areas of southeastern Colorado, like Lamar and La Junta, have already reported 20 or more days over 90 degrees. e Front Range has already had 10-15 days over 90 degrees. Most of the country is also likely to be hotter than usual for the

rest of the summer, she said.

at’s quite the switch after last year, which started out with coolerthan-average months, Bolinger said.

e hotter temperatures are likely to continue for the rest of the summer. Western Colorado and the Four Corners area have a 70%-80% chance of above-average temperatures — a very high degree of condence, Bolinger said.

Colorado’s stream and river levels are receding after a normal runo year, and incoming precipitation will be increasingly helpful for water users in the late summer and early fall. Although the state has seen average precipitation so far, there’s a 40%50% chance rainfall will tumble below normal levels for July through September.

Some areas, like Fort Collins and Burlington, have seen less-thanaverage rainfall so far. Even with some rain in the near-term forecast for early July, it will be hard for these areas to end the water year, which closes Sept. 30, at the average level, Bolinger said.

e combination of hot and dry weather could make it harder for areas of the state that are already experiencing drought conditions to recover, and it could mean that more areas fall into drought, she said.

About 16% of the state is experiencing drought conditions. at is

vastly better than in late 2020 and early 2021, when the entire state was in drought and over 20% was in the most severe drought category. At that level, agricultural and recreational economic losses are large, reservoirs are low, large res can develop and mandatory water restrictions are often implemented, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

“ ere is a slightly increased risk for drier extremes in the southern part of the state, which really means there would be a low likelihood that any drought that worsens or develops in the summer is not going to see relief through the fall,” Bolinger said.

In the Upper Rio Grande River Basin, aquatic biologist Estevan Vigil is keeping an eye on the water temperatures and water levels on the Rio Grande and Conejos rivers for Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Brown trout and rainbow trout ourish when water is about 50 degrees but struggle when it rises above 70 degrees. At that level, their immune systems become stressed, and catch-and-release shing can lead to higher sh mortality.

If stream levels fall below 50% of the norm, and if temperatures rise above 70 degrees, Vigil may implement voluntary or emergency shing closures.

“In the (San Luis Valley) since 2019, we’ve probably done it twice,” Vigil said. “I’m anticipating having to do it this year.”

A strong monsoon season would help keep rivers owing and shing access open, he said.

Several city water managers said their reservoir storage supplies were looking good during the water conditions meeting. Colorado Springs Utilities reservoirs were at 85% of their capacity, and Denver

Water’s reservoirs were 97% full. e lack of monsoons would heighten concerns over wild re risk or lead to a shorter rafting season for boaters, Bergere said. Less-than-average rainfall could also leave sections of the river dry as water gets pulled for other uses, like irrigation and municipal supplies.

Water users in the San Miguel River Basin know how to endure uctuating supplies, Bergere said.

“What we’re looking at there is not amazing, but it’s something we’re pretty used to down here,” he said. “Without much rain, wild re will de nitely be a pretty serious concern.”

is story was printed through a news sharing agreement with e Colorado Sun, a journalist-owned nonpro t based in Denver that covers the state.

Skiers cruise down the slopes at Arapahoe Basin ski area in Colorado on Nov. 13, 2023. Low precipitation has left much of the region in a “snow drought,” which could have big implications for Colorado River water supply. Climate o cials said the snow pack has o cially melted as of June 27 at all mountain monitoring stations. FILE PHOTO
