Colorado has nation’s worst outbreak of bird flu among dairy cattle
BY JOHN INGOLD THE COLORADO SUN
Colorado’s outbreak of bird u among dairy cattle is now the worst in the country, with more cases in the past month than any other state, according to the latest state and federal data.
As of early July, Colorado had identi ed 26 herds with cases of avian in uenza. Of those, 22 were identi ed within the past month and the herds are still in quarantine. Four other cases were identied earlier and quarantines have since been lifted.
All a ected herds are in the northeastern part of the state. e rapid and still largely mysterious spread in Colorado — hardly a leading dairy state — contributes to growing concerns that U.S. health authorities are not doing enough to contain the virus. While the threat currently

Open space advocates lobby to limit the size of Westy’s popular o -leash dog park
The 470-acre o
-leash dog park would be the largest in the United States
BY MONTE WHALEY MWHALEY@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
A local group is hoping to sway the city councilors from rezoning a 470-acre parcel of the Westminster Hills Open Space into an o -leash
dog park, which would make it the largest dog park of its kind in the United States
A Change.Org petition started by Westminster Hills Open Space Advocates has attracted 432 signatures over the past two weeks. e petition e ort hopefully shows city leaders that plenty of people believe an o -leash dog park of such size would be environmentally disastrous, organizers say.
“Our hope is that the city council will recognize there is a sizable group
of residents that have not been represented in their conversations and decisions thus far,” said petition backer Melissa Tatro.
e dog park at Western Hills has been the focal point for controversy since city o cials earlier this year pointed to an environmental assessment of the open space which states that o -leash dogs are damaging local plants and wildlife. e huge number of visitors and their pets are taking a toll on the open space, o cials said.
“Simply put, Westminster Hills is being loved to death, and we are exploring strategies to protect and preserve a beloved destination for our community,” according to city ocials.
More than 4,100 people signed a petition by mid-March hoping to block the city’s plan for the o -leash area. e planned change would affect the one million or so visitors who come to the open space every year, the petition reads. e city later said about 750,000 people visit the park each year.
Earlier this month, a majority of city councilors said that they wanted to keep the o -leash area as is. is is despite a city sta recommendation to cut the parcel roughly in half
or more to increase open space in the city.
Councilors said they were responding to the desires of most residents who covet the o -leash area as a prime getaway for dogs and their owners.
e Change.org petition from the Westminster Hills Open Space Advocates states that recent studies conrm that currently allowed dog use is destroying the open space.
“Endangered species like burrowing owls are disturbed by dogs trampling their habitats, and native shortgrass prairie is dying due to dog trampling and waste. Runners, bicyclists, families with small children, the physically fragile and owners of reactive and smaller dogs are currently unable to use the space without being chased by overeager dogs,” the petition states.
“Help protect this fragile ecosystem by telling Westminster City Council to limit o -leash dog access to the land,” the petition states.
“ is land is for more than just dog owners: it’s for the entire community and generations to come.”
e city council will take up a management plan for the dog park at its July 8 meeting.
Westminster City Councilors opted to keep the 470 acre Westminster Hills Open Space intact, allowing dogs and dog owners to use the entire park. FILE PHOTO
How Does Denver’s
I had the same question, so I did some research on our MLS, REcolorado. At right are some charts I created. As always, I don’t define metro Denver by counties but rather as an 18-mile radius of downtown Denver. The charts and the statistics below are for that area.
The January-to-June rise in sold prices are remarkably similar, going from the low 500s to the high 500s with little overall gain compared to prior years.
Real Estate Market in the First Half of 2023 and 2024 Compare?
As a result, the months of inventory (not shown) was similar both years, dropping from above 3 months in January to 2 months in March, but diverged in April, staying at just above 2 months from April through June 2023, but rising to almost 3 months from March to June of this year.
The most dramatic change is the number of homes available to purchase despite falling number of closings. That resulted in an increase in the days-in-MLS statistic, which was similar to last year but only through April, whereupon the days-inMLS number rose to 11 instead of staying in the 5-6 day range of last year.
In January 2023, the ratio of closed price to original listing price was 96.2% but rose to 100% for March through July. January 2024 was better than 2023 at 97.3%, but it rose to 100% for only three months and dropped to 99.4% in June.
The chart below was shrunk ver cally so that the number scales would match.
Are you following the 2024 presidential race? You may be interested in my political blog, which you can find at http://TalkingTurkey.substack.com
The metric which I find more useful than closed price is the price per finished square foot, which rose in 2023 from $298 in January to $320 in June, but it stabilized at that level in 2024, rising from $316 per finished square foot in January to $322 in June.
Price Reduced on Arvada Home Built for Entertaining
Another tell-tale metric of market health is how many listings expire without selling. In 2023, that number for the Denver metro area fell from 651 in January to 581 in June, but the opposite happened this year, rising from 654 in January to 873 in June.
The sellers designed this 4,603-sq.-ft. home at 6714 Field St. in Arvada for entertaining. The price was just reduced from $845,000 to $825,000, which computes to under $180 per square foot. Spaces for entertaining abound both indoors and on the large wraparound deck, which was rebuilt 2 years ago. There is an indoor hot tub in its own room that is well ventilated to avoid moisture-related issues. There is a guest bedroom on the main floor. This home is an early example of passive solar design. In addition to the solar thermal panels on the roof, there are solar thermal panels built into the south wall of the living room to capture solar gain in the winter. There is no HOA. Development Opportunity in Wheat Ridge
Broker associate Austin Pottorff has just listed 8 acres of agricultural land in Wheat Ridge for $6,000,000, with options on ditch water rights. One parcel at 11221 W. I-70 Frontage Road totals 1.9 acres and comes with the option to purchase six shares of the Brown & Baugh Ditch Company. The larger parcel, with an address of 4745 Parfet Street, is 6.1 acres and has eight ditch water certificates that could be purchased along with the property. Water is deeded separately from this land and can be used for agricultural or other non-residential purposes. In addition, there are several unregistered wells on the properties. Both parcels are within the Fruitdale water district where there are currently no restrictions on the number of taps that can be purchased for new residential development. Currently zoned AG-2, there are numerous allowed usages including boarding four horses per acre and growing feed. More info is available on request. Water & sewer mains border the property and the B&B Ditch runs along the west side. There is a high voltage utility easement that traverses the property north to south. Rarely does an opportunity arise in Jefferson County, offering eight contiguous acres of agricultural land with an optional 14 shares of priority water, all within one mile the new Lutheran Medical Center in Applewood. Thornton adding cameras to two intersections
City hopes to slow crashes at Colorado and 120th, Washington and 88th
BY MONTE WHALEY MWHALEY@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.CKM
e City of ornton will start using red light cameras to tame speeding at two of the city’s busiest and most hazardous intersections.
e City Council this week approved taking $204,850 from ornton’s general fund to set up and begin operating red light cameras at 120th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard and 88th Avenue and Washington Street. e intersections experience “high-frequency, high-severity crashes…” according to a city sta report to the city council.

to humans is generally very low, infectious disease experts worry that the longer the virus spreads unchecked through animals, the greater the chances become that it will mutate to become more dangerous to people.
Dr. Maggie Baldwin, the state veterinarian, said Colorado agriculture and health o cials are working closely with dairies to identify cases of the virus and to try to prevent its spread.
“ is is just a virus that likes to hang around,” she said. “It’s really hard to mitigate once it’s in a sustained population. … I think if we all implement really strong biosecurity we absolutely can prevent the spread, but it’s in a really close geographic region.”
Colorado’s nation-leading numbers
Colorado’s recent cases far exceed those in any other state — Iowa and Idaho are the only other states to record double-digit case totals in the past month, with 12 and 10, respectively.
Colorado’s case total since bird u was rst identi ed in dairy cattle this spring places the state second
e funds will also cover two mobile speed enforcement cameras placed at di erent locations based on the number of speeding tra c citations, crash data and citizen complaints, the report states.
e money will cover the initial cost of setting up the program along with two months of operations, including leasing the mobile speed van, red light cameras, and a photo technician to be managed out of the police department, the sta report states.
A full year of operation of the redlight camera program would cost $800,000 but may ultimately be underwritten by amount of red light and speeding citations generated through the e ort, the city states.
Council members voted unanimously for the expenditure, saying it aligns with ornton’s goal of reducing tra c accidents on local roads.
nationally, behind only Idaho and one ahead of Michigan. But Colorado ranks far lower in dairy production than those states — the state was 13th in the country for milk production in 2023, according to federal data.
ere are slightly more than 100 dairy herds in Colorado, meaning the bird u outbreak has now hit one-quarter of all herds in the state.
On a per-cow basis, Colorado’s outbreak is roughly three times worse than Idaho’s, which has approximately 667,000 dairy cattle compared with 201,000 in Colorado.
Baldwin suggested that Colorado’s e orts at disease detection may be re ected in the state’s high numbers. She said the state has put in a lot of work getting information to dairy producers, as well as industry associations and veterinarians.
“We’re trying to really encourage early diagnostics, early reporting and really good symptom monitoring,” she said, “and I think the relationships that we’ve established in the state have allowed for producers to feel like they can come to us when they have a problem.”
Baldwin said most cattle that are infected with bird u are recovering from the disease — though she doesn’t have exact numbers, she has not heard reports of unusual mortality rates. But farmers are
“Hopefully these cameras will help alleviate the dangers on our roads,” said Councilmember Kathy Henson. Speeding and worries about safety on local roads is a persistent topic for residents, Councilmember Chris Russell added. e red-light camera venture will “make a safer city for us.”
A red-light camera photographs a vehicle that has entered an intersection after the tra c signal has turned red. e photo of the vehicle is used to levy nes that generally come in the mail.
Red light and speed enforcement cameras have been shown to be able to “modify the behavior” of drivers and can lead to a reduction of reckless driving in areas where they are in use, a city sta report states. However, some members of the public view the cameras negatively and in the case of red-light cameras, the devices can lead to more rearend crashes, the sta report states.
su ering from lost production during infection periods, and she said some cattle may not return to full milk production.
“ e more that we’re seeing our producers be a ected by this, I think the more seriously they’re taking it and saying, ‘We really want to do what we can to stop this and to be good neighbors,’” Baldwin said.
How bird flu is spreading
Bird u, as the name suggests, is not something that usually infects cattle, and the initial “spillover” infections were believed to have been caused by wild birds hanging around dairy farms in the Texas panhandle.
Its subsequent spread to dozens of herds in at least 12 states was initially blamed on the movement of cows from farm to farm. Federal agriculture o cials clamped down on this movement by requiring animals moving across state lines to be tested.
But, as the outbreak has persisted, a more complicated picture of spread has emerged.
Baldwin said some of the a ected cattle in Colorado are in what are known as “closed herds” — meaning there is no movement of cattle in and out, making it impossible for the virus to have spread to that herd through the introduction of an in-

fected cow. U.S. agriculture o cials found something similar with several herds in Michigan.
Focus has now turned to the potential for what is called fomite transmission, in which the virus hitches a ride on an inanimate object. In this case, workers or veterinarians moving between herds could inadvertently be carrying the virus on their clothing or on equipment as they travel from farm to farm.
Baldwin said the state is working with dairy operators on detailed biosecurity plans for their dairies. is includes lots of personal protective equipment — not just masks, goggles and face shields for workers, but also booties and coveralls that can be thrown away before leaving a farm. It also includes plans for cleaning vehicle tires or other pieces of equipment leaving the dairy.
Hundreds of people monitored No human cases of bird u arising from exposure to infected cattle have been identi ed in Colorado. But state and local health o cials have monitored hundreds of dairy workers after possible exposure to the virus.
Following federal guidance, the state is only testing people who have u-like symptoms.
Westminster City Councilor wants to bypass new state law to allow guns at city hall
SB24-131 prohibits carrying firearms in sensitive spaces and goes into effect July 1
Councilor David DeMott is proposing the city council pass an ordinance allowing lawful active Concealed Carry Weapon Permit holders, or CCWs to carry their concealed carry weapons on city property currently prohibited in SB24131, according to a city staff report to the city council.
“As people who hold a CCW are some of the most law-abiding citizens who both subject themselves to background checks and train-
ing to assure their ability to provide personal and public safety,” DeMott states in the staff report. “As Americans, our right protected by the 2nd Amendment of our United States Constitution must be upheld to continue to protect our nation and personal life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.”
DeMott’s request for a new ordinance was placed on the city council’s June 24 agenda. But before the measure could be debated, DeMott pulled the item. The ordinance will now be considered at the council’s July 22 meeting, Andy Le, city spokesman, said via email.
DeMott did not return an email request for comment.
The legislation - “Prohibiting
Carry Firearms in Sensitive Spaces - passed the Colorado Legislature this session and was signed into law. Beginning July 1, SB24-131 makes it a Class 1 Misdemeanor to bring a firearm into a building where a meeting of local government’s governing body is being conducted, according to the staff report.
The bill blocks anyone from bringing a firearm onto the property – including adjacent parking lots to of or within any building in which:
The chambers or galleries of a local government’s governing body are located; A meeting of a local government’s governing body is being conducted; or The official office of any elected member of a local government’s governing body or
the chief executive officer of a local government is located.
The staff report also recommended that the City Council take no action on the proposal because it would increase the security of City Hall by limiting firearms except for peace officers; a member of the armed forces who is acting in their official capacity and security personnel hired by the local government.
“Gun violence is a reality that requires constant attention,” the staff report states. “Violent acts against government leadership, government facilities, and public participation in government are particularly impactful to local communities,” the staff report states.

State urges families to schedule vaccines as measles cases rise
BY SUZIE GLASSMAN
SPECIAL TO COLORADO COMMUNITY MEDIA
Colorado public health officials are encouraging families to ensure their children are current on their vaccines this summer, especially those required by school and childcare facilities, including measles, whooping cough, mumps, polio and varicella (chickenpox).
“Keeping our kids healthy at school starts with getting them vaccinated,” Dr. Ned Calonge, chief medical officer at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, said in a statement. “Summer break is a great time to schedule check-ups and make sure your child’s immunizations are up to date. This simple step helps keep them healthy and allows them to focus on learning
and having fun in school.
“With recent measles outbreaks in the United States and around the world, it’s more important than ever to ensure all students are caught up on childhood vaccines,” Calonge continued.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the U.S. has already seen more than twice as many measles cases in the first half of 2024 than in all of 2023.
Measles appears as a rash and can cause life-long hearing loss and brain damage. Up to 20% of those infected will need to be treated in a hospital, and severe cases can lead to respiratory failure and death.
The CDC recommends the MMR vaccine as the best way to prevent becoming infected.
Data published by the CDPHE shows that for the 2023-2024 school
year, nearly 93% of the state’s pre-K through grade 12 students were fully vaccinated against measles. Yet, because measles spreads so quickly, Immunization Branch chief at CDPHE Heather Roth said 95% of the population needs to be immunized to achieve herd immunity.
“While there hasn’t been a case of measles in Colorado this year, that doesn’t mean the risk isn’t there,” Roth said. “Measles can live in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area, so someone traveling either to or from Colorado could expose others, leaving unvaccinated adults and children at risk.”
Roth noted that some school districts and schools have far lower immunization rates than the state average, which is concerning. She speculated the lower rates within
specific communities are less about vaccine hesitation and more about lack of access to regular healthcare or health insurance.
Vaccine compliance rates also dropped after the COVID outbreak as many families missed preventive healthcare appointments or well visits.
“The good news is that many children are eligible for free or low-cost vaccines. To find a provider near you, visit COVax4Kids.org,” Roth said. “We encourage you to make an appointment now rather than waiting for school to start when it can take longer to get in.”
The Colorado School & Child Care Immunization Data dashboard allows individuals to search immunization rates for required vaccines by school district, school or location.

American pride at stake as boomerang world comes to Westminster City Park
BY MONTE WHALEY MWHALEY@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
Boomerang supremacy is at stake starting this week at the 2024 World Boomerang Championships at Westminster City Park.
An American team won the championship two years ago, bringing home the coveted Uncle Toby’s Quick Oats Cup.
But the Yanks face about 100 throwers from all over the world including Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland in a showdown from July 7 through July 15, say organizers.
Most throwers are men, but women also dot the rosters including the all-female team of Chloe Guerrero, Marie Appriou and Juli Appriou (and one other to be named later). ey will be dueling with notables Hariom Singh Suryavanshi, Oskar Moeller, Dizzy Klockner and Logan Broadbent.
Organized madness
e championships will feature team and individual competitions and winners will be scored on
throwing accuracy, distance and style, said David Hirsch, World Boomerang Championships 2024 Tournament Director.
Boomerangs, Hirsch noted, can be thrown over the distance of a football eld and caught at speeds of 80 miles an hour.
“If you’ve never seen this before, you won’t believe it,” Hirsch said.
“We have some who can catch these speeding boomerangs behind their heads and then throw them with real dead-on accuracy.”
e International Federation of Boomerang Associations (IFBA) holds team and individual competitions at a location somewhere in the world every two years. Westminster is joining Sau Paulo, Brazil, Perth, Australia, Kiel, Germany, Bordeaux, France and Albuquerque as among the cities that have hosted the championship in the past 10 years.
A friend suggested Westminster for this year’s championship and Hirsch said he was sold after his rst visit to City Park about 18 months ago.
“It is a nice, at park with no poles, which works well for throwing,” Hirsch said. “And you have the Rocky Mountains which everybody wants to see and its close to a major airport. You really can’t beat it.”
e championship is free to the public. Some boomerangs will also be given out for free, he said.

Arecent “mis re” by Westminster City Manager and Director of Parks, Recreation & Libraries on changing the name of a park in the Heart of Westminster warrants comment. While it is a small issue in itself, it re ects a much bigger problem which has continued to grow and is quite concerning.
I am talking about a lack of communications and coordination between City Manager Mark Freitag and the mayor/city council. e concern has been in the background for the public at least since the ill-handled Fire Department facilities survey was administered. It was designed and distributed without any prior knowledge or input of the city council.
Such a judgement decision by Freitag re ects a tip of the iceberg attitude on his part according to feedback from members of the city council.
A most recent example of no communications between administrative sta and elected o cials is the mishandling of changing the name of “Firemen’s Park” at 73rd Avenue and Bradburn. Freitag and Director of Parks, Recreation & Libraries Tomas Mishler-Herrera unilaterally changed the name to “Fire ghters’ Park” without any sta communication to inform the council nor seeking any council input.
ey also failed to canvas interested parties ahead of time. Prior to Freitag’s tenure, the naming of parks has always involved the mayor/city council.
Firemen’s Park has a rich and long history as noted by Westminster Historical Society members. Given the turnover of administrative sta , many times they are not aware of such history and sensitivity.
At the June 26 Council meeting, a unanimous Council vote renamed the park “Russell Park honoring all re ghters.”

city council, a formal city council policy is warranted to avoid such “misres” and unneeded expense in the future.
City sta developed their own procedure to handle naming requests. Again, this was done without any knowledge of city council. City Council should take the updated version of the procedure from sta and turn it into a formal city council policy. Such policy would conclude with the mayor/city council making the nal decision on any name change for parks and city facilities.
While the city manager is certainly a capable administrator and leader, he has a blind spot to working with Mayor McNally and City Council. His military background seems to overshadow a wholesome manager/council working relationship. is is not all unusual among retired military o cers (Freitag had a distinguished 20-plus year Army career and achieved the rank of colonel) who go onto a second career in city management. Military folks aren’t used to working closely with an elected mayor and city council. e damaged working relationship must be addressed.
Thornton council hopes charter amendment will settle vacancy issue
On a 5-3 vote with one council member absent, the ornton City Council decided to have their citizenry decide who lls vacant council seats when one or more council members resign in mid-stream. It was a clear example of the two competing existing “political camps” within the city council.
Conservatives Mayor Kulmann and Council members Sandgren and Unrein voted “no.” In an earlier discussion, the council was considering including the mayor’s position in this new approach when a special election would be held, but dropped it in their nal delibera-
tions. e mayor’s seat is decided citywide while the council seats are within individual wards with the cost of a single ward election being much less than a citywide vote for mayoral candidates. is pro-democracy decision on a voter-determined approach is a breath of fresh air. It takes away political party lined council appointments as determined by the party in power.
ree cheers for the pro-democracy council members led by Mayor Pro Tem Karen Bigelow. It should be pointed out that if less than one year is left when the council member leaves his/her seat, city council would make the appointment. Also, if there is less than 90 days left before a regular election, the seat would be left vacant.
Metro Denver housing shortage pegged at 70,000-plus
I don’t recall previously seeing a de nitive number of housing units which the Denver metro area needs to house everyone. e 70,000-plus dwelling unit gure came about thanks to an in-depth analysis by Zillow which is heavy in the real estate industry.
For the Denver metro area, the problem mushroomed in the last decade or so due to two key factors: First, the signi cant in-migration of families and workers and second the insu cient production of new residential units of all types.
On a national scale, Zillow found the housing de cit grew from 4.3 million units in 2021 to 4.5 million dwelling units in 2022 which is the most recent data available.
Other major cities are worse o than Denver according to Zillow. Boston, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles and Minneapolis have some of the worst shortages.
We have known there is a housing shortage in Colorado and the nation for some time but did not know the magnitude of it. Zillow talks in terms of “missing households” to re ect the number of dwelling units needed to house everyone. “Missing households” is
de ned as those living with nonrelatives and then subtracts out the number of vacant units to determine the housing de cit. Such families and individuals are prime candidates to move out and create a separate household.
Zillow goes on to point out that the number “doesn’t include relatives living together, such as adult children with parents. And it isn’t enough for builders to just target the number of missing households.
ey also must create enough places for new people moving into the market and young adults moving out on their own.”
Needless to say, this is a huge local and national problem that cannot be physically resolved in a year or two. It’s simply not feasible.
Additional housing is a slow expensive process
I have addressed this issue previously from the standpoint of the di culty to achieve true “a ordable housing.” ere are so many variables which are at play and must be accomplished to realize the end product.
Homebuilding is a risky business for all levels of size and price. With the in ation which is still dominant regarding construction materials as well as high mortgage rates, it just adds more risk and pressure for the builders. So, how do we get out from under such risks and entice more builders to join in the effort to start to crack this egg?
I would suggest that all levels of government get more involved in the nancial end of the process to give builders more assurance that the projects will become reality.
More guarantees on nancing even with some “loss leaders” or below market interest rates. Perhaps it has to become a federal mandate to force lenders to do such lending policies. More tax credits authorized by Congress would be imperative. Less government “red tape” and fewer requirements being imposed on builders are essential.

How Court Appointed Special Advocates help children
In 1976, Seattle juvenile court judge David Soukup was on the brink of a life-changing decision for a three-year-old who had been abused for most of her short life.
Should Judge Soukup return the child to her mother, who tolerated her boyfriend’s abuse of her daughter? Should he send the child to foster care and subject her to the trauma of being separated from her mother?
Judge Soukup felt overwhelmed with the gravity of the decision. In a 2018 discussion with e National CASA/GAL Association for Children, Judge Soukup stated, “It terri ed me to make decisions about kids when I didn’t have anybody there that was only advocating for the child.”
After that case, Judge Soukup founded what is now known as CASA, an organization that represents the interests of abused and neglected children in court.
CASA of the Continental Divide lives up to Judge Soukup’s goal through a small army of trained and court-appointed volunteers in Eagle, Lake, Summit, and Clear Creek County. For the past 25 years, CASA of the Continental Divide volunteers have donated 34,000 hours while serving around 80 children annually. As a result of
As a nation and as consumers, we have become so demanding of what we expect to get for our money. Let’s back o that mentality and be satis ed with less in especially “starter homes” or “basic level” apartments. However, careful thought is needed so that we are not building today’s a ordable housing which could become tomorrow’s slums.
Another, more “outside the box” thinking to ramp up the number of annual dwelling units could be for the federal or state government

tireless advocacy by Continental Divide CASA advocates, 256 local children have been found to be in safe and permanent homes.
Volunteer CASAs undergo a virtual training program that is rigorous yet tailored to individuals who have commitments during the day. A training cohort may consist of CASA candidates in all four counties that CASA of the Continental Divide serves. Training includes instruction on child interviewing, safety, mandatory reporting, early childhood and mental health, substance abuse, permanency, foster care, trauma and resilience, among other topics.
CASA candidates must successfully complete several ctional case exercises as part of the mandated training. After a background check and screening, CASA candidates are sworn in by the chief judge of the Fifth Judicial District. CASAs do not need to be attorneys, nor do they need any previous legal training. CASAs are composed entirely of community members who want to make a difference for the most vulnerable children in their community.
William C. Fuller, 75, of Thornton, Colorado, died Monday, July 1, 2024 in his home.
Bill was born on February 1, 1949 in Brighton, Colorado to Sherman and Evelyn Fuller. He graduated from Brighton High School in 1967. He attended Colorado State University for 2 years. Bill worked on his cousin’s farm, spent many years as a salesman, mainly in the automotive field and worked at Denver International Airport. When he retired, he found his true calling as a school bus driver. Bill tackled countless early mornings driving the bus because he loved making the kids smile and keeping them safe as they started their day. He never failed to get a laugh out of his coworkers regardless of the field he was in and his everpresent smile was always a welcome sight.
On September 29th of 1990, Bill married the woman who would change his life forever, Bonnie Reese. Each chapter of his life following this fateful event would be centered around his newfound family, never missing a chance when he was able to see them and make them feel special. Bill loved sports from an early age. Even in retirement, he rooted for the Broncos during their ups and downs. From 1976 he held on tightly to a pair of Broncos’ season tickets that he eventually passed down through his family. Anytime he wasn’t watching the Broncos or an exciting new action movie he was spending time with his grandkids, who meant the world to him.
Even after turning in the school bus keys he loved to drive, sometimes a little too fast.
The driving was always more exciting for him when he had company to share the ride with or when he was heading to get some ice cream. If no one was available to ride with, Bill would simply call instead to check up on how everyone was doing, and if they wouldn’t answer they could expect to see a text from him when they looked at their phone. Despite living in Minnesota for many years, his heart was always at home in Colorado. He loved the mountains so much that he had them engraved on his wedding band so they could be with him all the time, no matter where he was. Whenever he got to spend time in the mountains he liked to wake up at the crack of dawn and start on breakfast to feed everyone.
At his core, Bill loved people. Whether they were co-workers, neighbors, strangers in line or especially family, he had a charm that made him endlessly easy to talk to and open up to. When you talked to Bill you knew he cared about every word you had to say. Bill made a lasting impression on the hearts of all who knew him and he will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman and Evelyn. He is survived by his wife Bonnie of 33 years; children Christy (Rich) Bach of Thornton; Jason (Kari) Soukup of Thornton and Nathan (Shelly) Soukup of Owatonna, Minnesota; grandchildren, Tyler Soukup, Zach (Jess) Soukup, Makenzie (Zach) Baker, Jordan (Amanda) Bach, Taylor Anderson, Avery Anderson, Carter Soukup; great grandchildren, Lincoln Baker and coming July 23rd Brecken Baker.
to issue increased debt speci cally tied to funding housing construction, as well as home buying. For lack of a better term, let’s call it the 2025 Marshall Housing Plan.
I’m referring in a sense to the postWorld War II aid which the United States provided to war-torn Europe to help their people. In this case, the target would be ramping up nancing for housing construction. Drive the nancing cost down so builders could produce lower cost housing. It’s a thought anyway.

Farmers and a fair show o the culture of this summer favorite fruit
BY NINA JOSS NJOSS@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
Every year, on one day in the summer, a group of people line up at the edge of a long, yellow tarp in southeastern Colorado. e tarp is stationed next to a building to prevent the wind from impacting a competition, for which some people practice seriously. Others decide to give it a try on a whim.
“ ey pick out their own seed, and I guess they could suck on it for a little while, get it dry, how ever they feel is the best way to treat their seed,” said Sally Cope, who helps organize the event. “And then practice, and then spit.”
As the black seeds land one by one on the bright tarp, people wait anxiously to see whose will make it the farthest.
e seed-spitting competition is part of a day-long event entirely dedicated to a sweet, red, juicy fruit grown in Colorado. A star at any summer picnic, watermelons are more than just a refreshing snack to the people of the Arkansas Valley. In this region, especially in the town of Rocky Ford, farmers dedicate their entire summer to raising the classic crop — which has become a staple of the area’s culture.
“It’s a way of life,” said Gail Knapp, owner of Knapp Farms, which grows watermelons and other produce. “We don’t take time o normally in the summertime to do what normal people do in the summertime.
our crops — and those kinds of things take a lot of care.”
From its mascot — a muscular melon called a “meloneer” — to its annual Watermelon Day celebration, Rocky Ford embraces the crop, which has deep ties to the city’s history.
In 1878, Rocky Ford’s rst mayor and one of its founders, G.W. Swink, had a bountiful harvest of watermelons.
“He brought them here to the railroad station … and he gave slices of melons to those who were passengers that stopped on the train,” Cope said. “After a couple of years, he moved his table of watermelon slices and gave away melons — a large melon to all of those who came in attendance.”
What started out as a gift from the mayor to his people turned into Watermelon Day, now celebrated as part of the week-long Arkansas Valley Fair. Cope, the manager of the fair, said the fruit-focused day includes a watermelon carving competition and a melon giveaway.
“We … usually give away around 20,000 pounds of melon on Watermelon Day,” she said. is year, Watermelon Day will take place on Aug. 17 at the Arkansas Valley Fairgrounds, on the secondto-last day of the fair which includes rodeos, a carnival, 4-H contests and much more.

WATERMELON
e Watermelon Day tradition gives the fair its title as the “oldest continuous fair” in Colorado. Cope said the fair team even gave away watermelons in 2020.
Why is the valley good for melons?
Each year, the Rocky Ford Rotary Club helps raise funds to buy watermelons from local growers, such as Knapp Farms.
At the fth-generation farm, owners Gail and Brian Knapp — along with their children and grandchildren — grow watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes, chilies, eggplant, squash, cucumbers and more.
Knapp said the conditions in the Arkansas Valley are great for growing watermelons.
“It seems to be our soil, our hot days, cooler nights,” she said. “ ere’s a combination there that seems to grow really sweet melons.”
Once the melons are harvested, Knapp Farms sells them at their local farm market and also sends them to the metro Denver area to be sold at grocery stores including Kroger, Safeway and Whole Foods.
As of late June, the largest watermelons were about the size of a baseball, Knapp said. As they continue to grow, they should be ready to start harvesting by late July.
Despite the ripe conditions for watermelons, Knapp said there are some risks to the melon business. Weather, such as the copious amount of hail last spring, can devastate a crop. Knapp said last season was a challenge for most farmers in the region for this reason.
With water from the Arkansas River being sold to cities, labor shortages and
unpredictable demand, there are many risks to farming watermelons, Knapp said, and it’s not getting easier. But if everything works out in a given season, the business can be very pro table, she said.
Growing your own melons
For gardeners who want to try a hand at growing their own watermelons, veteran gardener Deborah King said it’s a bit too late in the season to start from seeds — but folks can start planning now for next year.
King is a supervisor at Tagawa Gardens, a garden center in Centennial, where she says she learns a lot from customers.
“It is a big plant, it spreads out really big,” she said. “But the key is that you need to have consistent water supply throughout its growing season.”
She also said it’s helpful to plant watermelons on hills or mounds, which gives the plant space and helps ensure drainage and retain heat. It can also be helpful to use grass clippings, wood chips or straw to maintain moisture in the soil, King said.
For her, gardening is a satisfying endeavor.
“When you get your harvest and you’re able to share with … your neighbors, co-workers — I mean, there’s no more satisfaction than eating right from your own garden,” she said. “You realize that avor … and it just sets you up for the next season to do more, or try di erent things.”
But for those who consider themselves a bit impatient, or simply want to leave the farming to the experts, there’s good news: the Rocky Ford watermelons will be available in stores near the end of the summer.

Arvada Center celebrates sculptors for the summer
When public art really connects, it can be a real placemaker for its chosen home.
e Arvada Center has certainly proven that with its Sculpture Field, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
But as every artist who goes after public art commissions can attest, getting selected to build a piece is a rare occurrence.
For its summer art exhibitions, the center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., is hosting a pair of shows in conversation with each other: “I Regret to Inform You…Rejected Public Art” and “inFORMed Space: Perspectives in Sculpture.” Both shows are on display through Sunday, Aug. 25.
“We’re celebrating sculpture both inside and outside this summer,” said Collin Parson, director of Gal-
COMING ATTRACTIONS
leries and curator for the Arvada Center. “Both shows are very unique, especially the rejection show, because it highlights how much public art is a business of perseverance.”
“I Regret to Inform You…” is on display in the Upper and eatre Galleries, and posed a particularly challenging problem for the curatorial team - how to display sculptural work that was never actually created.
“We’ve used everything from Photoshopped images and digital renderings to models and videos that artists have created,” Parson ex-
plained. “ e exhibit has a lot reading, but it’s a great opportunity learn more about the public art process and how di cult it is.”
One of the most powerful aspects of the exhibit is the emphasis it puts on how frequent rejection is for artists, even well-known ones who have had successes in the public art world.
“ e participating artists deserve a lot of acknowledgements for speaking about rejection and letting people delve deeper into a more personal aspect of being a creative,” Parson said. “I hope people realize that for every public sculpture they see, there’s two-to-four artists who were nalists and weren’t selected.” is creates a neat segue into the center’s other exhibit, “inFORMed Space,” which is on display in the
Main Gallery. e idea to do an allsculpture exhibit was inspired by the Sculpture Field’s anniversary, but participating sculptors were given one challenging parameter — their work had to t in a four-foot by fourfoot square area.
“What we have on display is a variety of concepts, media used and techniques explored. I think of it as a forest oor of sculptures, because all the works ended up being very vertical,” Parson said. “ ere’s nothing on the walls, so the exhibit is very freestanding.”
e way the two exhibits highlight the challenges of the creative process, especially in the sculpting medium, makes them the perfect duo for the summer.

3 Coloradans to represent the U.S. at the Underwater Hockey World Championships in Malaysia
BY JOHN RENFROW JRENFROW@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
Colorado is a huge hub for hockey players and fans, whether on ice, on the eld or even underwater. And why not? If it’s a sport, we have it here.
Ten women under age 24 are set to represent the U.S. at the Underwater Hockey Age Group World Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia this July and of course, three are Coloradans.
Elsa Debrunner, Lillianna Brooks and Aria Paul will compete in the event between July 16 and July 27 against about a dozen teams from around the globe.
e U.S. is sending three teams spanning three divisions to the upcoming world championship: U24 men, U24 women and U19 men. Debrunner, Brooks and Paul are on the USA U24 Women’s Team.
“Training for worlds is a big commitment, but training with Lillianna and Aria is super encouraging and makes me super excited to play more hockey,” said Debrunner, a Conifer High School alum and club athlete at the Colorado School of Mines.
What is underwater hockey?
It’s a non-contact snorkeling sport with two teams of six facing o at the bottom of the pool. A weighted puck can be pushed, slid or icked with a short stick into the goal. Equipment includes a mask, ns, a snorkel with a mouthguard, a glove, a water polo cap and a stick. Teammates rotate dives for roughly ve-to-20 seconds in a fast-paced, three-dimensional sport that combines the back-and-forth motion of regular hockey with up-and-down movements to return up for air between dives.
“It’s physically di erent than any other sport,” Debrunner said. “But once you learn that, the communication with your team is probably the hardest part. You have to have a strategy really dialed in ahead of time because it’s di cult to communicate during the match.”
It requires elite breath control, tness and strong cooperation between coaches and teammates, Debrunner said. But the coaches believe the team is
ready for a strong showing in Malaysia.
“We’re really impressed with the progress made since the team candidates rst got together. e commitment towards training and implementation of the game plan started at a high level and has seemed to grow,” Coach Kendall Banks said in a release. “ rough their support of each other combined with healthy competition, there seems to be a synergy or ‘magic’ here. We’re excited to see where it takes the team.”
Colorado connections
Debrunner and Brooks are from Colorado originally, and Paul is from San Francisco but attends Colorado State University with Brooks. Brooks got into underwater hockey about three years ago, she said.
As a former swimmer for St. Mary’s Academy in Englewood, she had the tools to be a strong underwater hockey player. But she didn’t know what to make of the sport at rst.
“I saw a poster one day for a pool in ornton and it was like, ‘underwater hockey,’ and I was really committed to swimming at that point so I was like, ‘ at’s weird. I don’t know,’” Brooks said.
But later as a student at Colorado State, Brooks was strolling the quad and saw booths for clubs. One was serendipitously for underwater hockey.
“ is girl, who was actually Elsa’s older sister (Ianna Debrunner), was like, ‘Hey! Do you want to play underwater hockey?’” Brooks said. “You know what? Maybe I do.”
Since plunging into underwater hockey, Brooks has had tunnel vision for a spot on the U.S. team. But it’s a stop on her way to a bigger goal: being chosen on the USA Women’s Elite Team, which is a collection of the best players regardless of age.
Still, representing her country competitively is a dream come true. e team will battle against “10 to 12” other national teams, including Malaysia, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and others.
A collection of women from all over the country, the national team met in

But Brooks, Debrunner and Paul have an advantage being able to train together at Carmody Recreation Center in Lakewood and Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in ornton. ey’ll stay on their grind until it’s time to travel overseas for global glory.
