Best friends throughout high school, Emilee Wagner, on left, and Victoria VonDuyke share a hug prior to the commencement ceremony for Mountain Range High School on May 14 at the University of Colorado Boulder Events Center.

Governor John Hickenlooper signed two bills into law on May 16 at Standley Lake High School, both effecting students. The first bill signed was Senate Bill 14150, sponsored by Senator Rachel Zenzinger of District 19 which covers parts of Westminster and Arvada. The bill makes several changes to the existing school counselor corps grant program, a program designed to increase and support the amount of counseling available in secondary schools. The bill extends the length of the grant cycle to four years and extends the program into middle and junior high schools. The annual total grant amount will also increase to $10 million, from $5 million through this bill. Zenzinger said the ultimate goal of this program is to help increase the graduation rate within the state and increase the percentage of students who appropriately prepare for, apply to and continue into post-secondary education. “I know counselors made a big difference in my life. What they do our schools is invaluable,” Zenzinger said. “We need counselors and it’s such a pleasure to offer up this bill in order to get more schools counselors in our schools so that we can really help our students succeed.”

The second bill signed into law was House Bill 14-1276, sponsored by Representative Dianne Primavera and Senator Mary Hodge. The bill creates a funding source for secondary schools in the state to implement and provide CPR training into their curriculum. The bill will set aside $250,000 to fund CPR curriculum in schools. “I’m always grateful for bills that we’ve worked on to be signed into law and it’s especially gratifying to me when it’s legislation that’s potentially lifesaving,” Primavera said. “This is a lifesaving bill. Seconds really matter when it comes to cardiac advance. The faster we can get someone CPR, the better chances they have to survive.” Helping in the success of the bill is former Standley Lake High School graduate Lindsay Hayden. At the age of 17, Hayden, now 23, went into cardiac arrest and collapsed in class. Her friend and ultimate lifesaver, Cameron Oliver came to her rescue by performing CPR on Hayden, while a second student rushed to retrieve an AED unit. “If those two brave teenagers had not taken the action they did that day, I would not be alive. It’s never too early to learn the life-saving skill of CPR,” she said. “That’s why I’ve been supporting this bill from the beginning and pushing for it to go through because it can save lives.”

Documentary to be housed in Library of Congress By Ashley Reimers

areimers@colorado communitymedia.com A powerful documentary on the roles of women in war in the United States recently premiered at Front Range Community College in Westminster. Titled “Women Warriors: A Vision of Valor” is a 50-minute documentary following the stories of 10 women veterans who

served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The documentary was created by Front Range digital media students who collaborated with Rep. Ed Perlmutter and staff and the Library of Congress to bring to life the gripping, yet touching stories of the women. Perlmutter said he’s proud of the stories of the brave Colorado women veterans that will be shared with the public and preserved in the Library of Congress.

“These courageous women all contributed to preserving and protecting our freedom and national security,” he said. “The students and faculty at Front Range Community College must be commended for all their stellar, professional work and talent in recording the history and producing this powerful and moving film. The history of these Colorado women veterans is the history of our nation.” Lead by Brandon Berman, Multimedia Graphics Technology teacher, the team of students worked vigorously to create and produce the film. Students researched history, conducted interviews and created animation and graphics. Berman said the process was completed in record time, with students working on overdrive to compete the film. He said when putting the film together, the team was careful not to force the story. “We really tried to use the script we created, which was factually based, with our skeleton structure,” he said. “For each issue, there were some negative experienc-

es, and some positive experiences, so we tried to give a balanced perspective, but a real one at the same time.” After the initial screening of “ Wo m e n Warriors: A Vision of Valor”, the film will be distributed to 100 high schools as a historical teaching tool. “We’re proud of this documentary,” Berman said. “It’s an experience none of us will forget. When it is given to high schools in the district, what an impact it will have.”

Fine reads for journey through summer You made your reservations months ago. This was a vacation you’ve been planning for… well, it seems like forever. One of those once-in-a-lifetime trips is what you’ve always dreamed about, and you’ve bought all new clothes and even a new suitcase for it. So why would you take just any old book on your vacation this summer? Instead, why not look for something new by an author you love?

May So a Memorial Day getaway is in the plans and you can’t wait. Before you go, grab one of these new books released toward the end of the month… Conservative writer Ben Carson has a new book out about America’s Future. There’s a new book out, cowritten by Bill Geist, too. In fact, you’ll find quite a few memoirs out toward the end of May, as well as novels by Terry Hayes, Tom Robbins, Robert Ludlum, and Joseph Finder. And Bob the Street Cat has a new book out, too, and fans will want it.

June Summertime reading bolts out the door like a teenager off curfew with new novels by Mary Alice Monroe, Dorothea Benton Frank, and Jeff Shaara; cookbooks; a business book by William Poundstone and one on commodities; a book about Sally Ride by Lynn Sherr; and Hillary Rodham Clinton’s much-anticipated biography. And that’s just the first week… Later in June, look for new novels by Diana Gabaldon, Jennifer Weiner, Janet Evanovich, Linda Fairstein, Ridley

Pearson, James Patterson, Jude Deveraux, and Dean Koontz. You’ll find a book about a dog that flew during World War II (and why). Learn how to do math in a fun way. Read about Justice Antonin Scalia. Pick up some new Will Shortz puzzle books in June. And learn how to use your manners when you have to swear. For the kids, look for a new Dork Diaries installation; an encyclopedia of animated characters; a few new mysteries for middle-grade readers; a new book about Charlie the Ranch Dog; and a book about farting fish.

July Just because summer’s half over doesn’t mean your reading list is! Before the fireworks even begin, look for new novels by Jojo Moyes, Susan Wiggs, J.A. Jance, Jacqueline Winspear, and Amy Sohn. There’s a new book coming out about Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio; a new book that debunks myths about sex; a new book by Ja Rule; a skinny book about crossword puzzles and why we love them; a self-help book on “wallowing” the right way; and a cool true-crime book about how amateurs have been solving cold cases and bringing killers to justice. Later in July, you’ll find more favorites: novels by Brad Thor, Iris & Roy Johansen, Anne Rivers Siddons, Terry Brooks, Catherine Coulter, Brad Taylor, Conn Igguldon,

Stuart Woods, James Lee Burke, Ace Atkins, and Julie Garwood; a new memoir by singer Rick James; a biography on Michelangelo; a new book about families and race; a tell-all about the Clinton’s political life; and a memoir of faith and football. The kidlets will love finding new Guardians of the Galaxy books; new joke books to while away the summer; the latest Fancy Nancy installment; and a new graphic novel by Neil Gaiman.

August You’re not done yet. There’s still plenty of summer – and plenty of time to read – left! The first part of August will see a new book by Andrew Cuomo; a new novel by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child; a new W.E.B. Griffin tome; a new book about crime-scene profilers; and a book about the woman behind the Mona Lisa. Also in August, look for a book about college football conferences; a business book about getting organized and one on prosperity; new cookbooks for backyard and for fall; and new novels by Carl Weber, William Kent Krueger, Debbie Macomber, Kelly Armstrong, Elaine Hussey, Randy Wayne White, Tami Hoag, Paul Coelho and Kathy Reichs. Get the kids in back-to-school mode with a new children’s book by Malala Yousafzai; a new Cupcake Diaries installment; ghost stories; and a kid’s book about paying it forward.

And now the disclaimer Yes, some of these books can be shifted, moved, or cancelled altogether. Titles can change; so can subject matter. If you’ve got a question about your favorite author, Nicely ask your librarian or bookseller – this is why they get paid the big bucks. Seriously, they’re experts at this stuff. Have a great summer and happy reading!

Every two years the City of Westminster conducts a citizen survey. This survey provides Westminster residents with an opportunity to provide feedback about how the city is doing in its service delivery to the community and make recommendations on future policy decisions. The official survey was mailed to 3,000 randomly selected residents in March. The data collection for this statisti-

cally valid survey has now concluded, and the city would like to provide an opportunity for all residents to give their feedback by completing the survey by visiting nrc.co1.qualtrics.com. The survey will be open through May 31 and will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Results from both surveys will be presented to Westminster city council at the June 2 study session meeting.

When it came to creating a sense community among their neighbors, second grade students at STEM Magnet Lab School looked outside the classroom and into the park next door. The students decided to build a community garden and asked the second-graders at neighboring school Hulstrom K-8 for some help. “The community garden is part of the STEM Lab students’ Problem Based Learning, PBL, project investigating how they could create community in this

neighborhood as part of their social studies standard,” STEM coordinator Tracey Calderon said. “That was their problem, and they decided a community garden could solve it and decided to invite the second graders over at Hulstrom, which is just across the park, to help them.” STEM Magnet Lab and Hulstrom are both magnet schools in Northglenn and therefore there is no real connection between the schools and the houses surrounding them. Calderon said by building the garden, the students are hoping to bring together the community members of North-

The city of Northglenn donated the land, laid the irrigation and installed the lighting for the garden. Home Depot in Thornton donated materials to build the garden. Calderon said that without the donations, the garden wouldn’t be possible. “I can’t emphasize enough the partnerships we made to get this going, especially with the city,” she said. Just because the fruits and vegetables are planted, the work doesn’t stop for the second graders. This summer different families of the students’ have signed up to care for garden over the coming months. Long term, Calderon said the goal is to work with com-

And all the produce grown will be donated to local food banks. “Our vision will always be to give all of the produce to community shelters for disadvantaged people in the community,” she said. “This garden is something students can come back to and see even after the graduate. This project has really gotten into their hearts and souls.” Second grade teacher Pauline Logan has seen firsthand the difference the garden has made in her students. She said her students have embraced the idea of giving back to the community. “It’s been so rewarding to see the kids work together and build community,” she said. “We’re excited to help different organizations that need fresh produce. It’s been really great.”

There is nothing more American than the right to vote. Westminster is going to lead the nation in asking our citizens to exercise that right in alignment with our City’s Strategic Plan’s goal to foster community engagement. Westminster City Council is doing this through a creative, innovative and comprehensive Get Out the Vote campaign. In June, Westminster City Council has proposed to pass a resolution committing to contacting every household in the city once a year, giving them information about how to register to vote. Simultaneously we will embark on a multi-faceted register to vote campaign alerting residents that they can register with their county clerk online, over the phone, or in person. We intend to partner with local High Schools to encourage eligible graduating High School Seniors to register and vote. Finally, residents who utilize city recreation centers and our libraries will be given voter registration materials. Last month on a 5-2 vote the city council voted to have our licensed landlords operating in our city provide a 1 page information sheet to tenants on how to register to vote. A landlord could have emailed or printed the page. When you move you must update your voter registration; the move is the event that triggers the need to change your registration. Despite early support and lengthy talks on shared values the Apartment Association ultimately fought the ordinance. Testimony on the night of the vote

and subsequent emails has been 2 to 1 in favor. We also heard from several people who were in favor of increasing voter participation and urged us to find a different solution. On a daily basis we are told to find innovative solutions that create efficiency by forming public — private partnership. Sadly a segment of the business community didn’t step up to the plate to support civic engagement. Maybe to them partnership is only important when it affects their bottom lines positively, not when it affects the bottom line of our community positively. The opposition on this issue was unfortunate and was focused on minimizing democratic participation. We received emails and calls calling us names and saying that those, stupid, lazy, un-education people should not vote, that voting should only be for the elite. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Every voice matters, every citizen should use their right to vote. After much deliberation we have found a bolder, more direct way to achieve the same goals of letting our residents know that their vote and their voice matter. We are proud to invite every citizen to register and vote. Westminster believes a strong democracy creates a strong community, and we look forward to having our residents more involved. And a drum roll please At long last, the announcement came. However, there were no trumpets or a parade; not even a drum roll. The joint announcement by the City of Westminster and Oliver McMillan forming a partnership on the phased re-development of the former Westminster Mall site certainly deserved a drum roll. Unfortunately, the proposed mandate by City Council requiring apartment owners to distribute voter registration materials trumped the good news we have been waiting to hear for years about the Mall site. The emails have poured in pounding the council to oppose the voter registration idea and it even made a national news network.

Hoping for a ‘winning combination’ Oliver McMillan has a solid track record in guiding and developing mixed-use development. The San Diego based company was founded in 1978 and has developed over $3 Billion in mixed use developments and currently has an additional $2 billion in projects underway in several cities. From what I am told, the contract with this master developer will be different in that they will not have the

combination.

Don’t forget the covenants

entire 105 acre site available to develop from the start. More than likely, an initial phase will be approximately 15 acres in size and probably will be higher density residential. I applaud city leaders in this approach given the previous failed starts on two separate development deals involving the whole site. The phased approach will allow the developer to “prove themselves” to the city and the community and in turn, the city Council can grant subsequent parcels of land or not. The entire site could take up to 20 years to complete as a lot will depend on the strength and depth of various markets i.e. retail, office, residential and the availability of financing. Here’s hoping this partnership is a winning

While the “chickens in the backyard” proposal in Westminster has garnered quite a bit of attention in the press, no one has mentioned a key factor. Residential dwellings which are located in subdivisions with homeowner associations already have covenants in place regarding raising chickens and probably keeping bees as well. Residential covenants which I am familiar with prohibit chickens, bees and other “back to nature” type activities in homeowners’ backyards. It is my understanding that approximately 85 percent of residential development in Westminster has HOA’s and covenants. About the only areas where chickens etc. could exist IF City Council were to allow such a change would be original (south) Westminster and the Countryside development. So, it isn’t as simple as it first appeared to be. Secondly, I echo what Vi June previously wrote about raising chickens and savoring that fresh egg.

It shouldn’t be an ‘all or nothing’ situation

It is most disappointing that our state Legislature failed to reach a compromise on the issue of allowing local governments more latitude in regulating oil and gas fracking operations. There are numerous statewide ballot proposals queuing up which should be avoided via a compromise by the Legislature and the governor. Some of the ballot issues are fairly draconian against the oil and gas operators. It would be far better and much less cost would be realized if a workable compromise could be reached by our legislators and signed by the Governor. I support a special session which would be called by the governor to have the Legislature work harder on a compromise. Oil and gas development is important to Colorado’s economy and it helps toward national selfsufficiency. There is “middle ground” to be reached if both sets of parties would listen to the voters and bend a little. It does not have to be an “all or nothing” proposition. Let’s use some reason here and work this out. Bill Christopher is a former Westminster city manager and RTD board member.

question of the week

Will the Rockies reach new heights? The Rockies’ winning record is taking many by surprise. We asked folks around town whether those wins will continue to pile up.

“Yes. Their pitching is better, and they’re getting some hits from their outfielders, and I think that’s going to continue to be the case.” Rick Longworth

“No, because they suck.” Ben Clapper

“I don’t know. They’re my team, but they are the Rockies, after all.” Kenny Lobato

“Yes, but there’s still 100 games to go. It’s too early in the season to really know.” George Adsit

Find a life worth loving Well, that does it. As you are reading this, it is quite possible that my oldest daughter is walking up to the podium at the 1st Bank Center to accept her diploma and officially become a high school graduate. With that, Elizabeth Kay Alcorn becomes, well, her own person (which, incidentally, is why I am using her name in a column for the first time ever). And, being her own person, she is now busy figuring out “what’s next?” The thing is, most of those high school seniors walking with her have probably been told what’s expected of them next. Whether overtly, or subtly, they’ve been told that they should go to college, or get a job, or go in the military. But, telling an 18-year old what is expected of them has almost no relation at all to what they want to do, or what they will end up doing. So Lizzie, and others, allow me to give you some food for thought. What you do to earn money to pay bills is one of life’s most important decisions. And, to get to the point where you earn money, some of you will have to spend 2, 4, 7 or even 11 more years in more schools just to get the opportunity to work. And work, it turns out, is hard; but it is infinitely harder when you end up doing something that you hate, no matter how well-paid. So, consider well the path ahead of you. Ask yourself, “Is this what I really want to be doing, or am I just trying to live up to someone else’s expectations for me?” Which bring up the question: How do you know? When my buddy Jay and I wrote on this subject a few years ago, we asked a lot of people, and they told us the way to know if what you’re doing is good for you is that your passion for it drives you out of bed in the morning. It consumes your thoughts on your free time, perhaps it

even becomes a distraction for you when you’re trying to get other things done. True passion is the fuel of great achievement. Think about the things that cause you to lose track of time, that will push you to work through your lunch break and through other appointments — that is your passion! Find a way to earn a living at that, and you will never have the sad, desperate lives that ordinary men (and women) lead. It’s possible, of course, that many of you have never found something that drives your passions like that. And that’s okay — there’s time. But, can I suggest, rather than go off to “find yourself” at a college that you don’t love for the low, low price of $30,000 of debt, that you divert your energies into service for a while? Whether that means the military, or a mission trip, or something like the Peace Corps, it makes no difference: you will learn more about yourself in three months of service to others than you will in four years of directionless college. As for Lizzie, she’s doing all of that (and came up with it all on her own!) and we — her mother and I — could not be prouder! One of her great gifts, perhaps even greater than her dancing, is her heart for helping Alcorn continues on Page 7

Little acts of kindness Last Saturday our daughter Nancy brought our two little great grandchildren Kayla and Allyson and together they planted our four large flower pots. Yes, in the scheme of things it was a small kindness. But to Bob and I it was a delight to see our little great granddaughters working to make our home look nice. To us it was a big act of kindness. That thought came to me after participating in a very small act of kindness. I was in line at the grocery store while Bob sat near the store doors. The line was long but other customers sensed my nervousness over leaving Bob for that amount of time. Anyway, those in line gave way so I could get back to Bob. One of the line holdups was the guy ahead of me and after paying the $148 bill he was short six cents. Well, the clerk did not offer up the six cents shortage. Of course I took out a quarter and got him on his way. In the process he saved face and I got back to Bob sooner. In short we all paid it forward and it was a happy transaction.

Another kindness

A few months ago I flew home to Minnesota for my needed family respite. Since I don’t fly much anymore I was a little nervous. On the shuttle going back to the airport I voiced my concern and immediately a lovely younger lady said, “Don’t give it a thought, I’ll take care of you since I’m also going back to Denver.” Did she ever take good care of me and my luggage. From the onset we found similarities. She lives in Arvada, works in the school system and comes from a Catholic family in Minnesota. Wow! Was I relieved to receive that kind of assistance. Maybe a small kindness for her but major for me and I thank her from the bottom of my heart.

Another act of kindness

The other evening about 7 p.m. there was a pounding on the door and the ringing of the doorbell. I opened the door and a hysterical young woman told me her dog was engaged in a dog fight with the neighbors big dog. No amount of calling her small dog back across the street was of avail. We were

both very frightened when all of a sudden a pickup truck came to a stop, the doors opened and two young men rushed to our aid, separated the dogs and placed the little dog in the arms of the distraught owner. Before we could properly thank them they were gone. In the scary fight I found a new friend, Lucinda, who lives in the area. I’m sure from time to time we will see each other and reflect on those guys who saved us and the dogs from what could have been a disastrous outcome. Just a little act of kindness with a huge outlay of kindness.

More kindness

Two weeks ago my dear friend, Lois, lost her husband. Of course we all are supporting her and will continue to offer support. Even a phone call frequently will help her through this sad time. It’s another opportunity to help someone who needs our love and prayers which are also acts of kindness. This weekend will bring forth a lot of remembering and sadness as we reflect on the loss of so many family and friends. Before the barbecue begins, let’s reflect on those who now are no longer with us. Stay well, stay involved and stay tuned. P.S. A very big shout out to Sharri Harris for being my “angel” when I needed one. You are wonderful for taking such good care of me. Vi June is past Democratic state representative for House District 35. She is a former mayor of Westminster and a former newspaper publisher. A Westminster resident for more than four decades, she and her husband, Bob, have five grown children and eight grandchildren.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Outrage over voting plan I’m outraged that five of the seven Westminster City Council members support an ordinance that if enacted would conscript landlords into becoming de facto government agents. The ordinance would force landlords to dispense politically approved voter registration information to new tenants. The ordinance violates landlords’ free speech rights. Implicit with the freedom of speech is the freedom not to speak, but this ill-conceived ordinance commands landlords to speak about voter registration information. Westminster taxpayers should worry that the city is about to make itself vulnerable to a costly First Amendment lawsuit. If landlords can be forced to provide voter registration information to new tenants, why can’t they also be forced to provide a copy of the Bill of Rights? Surely everyone agrees that the entire community would benefit if everyone became more familiar with their constitutionally protected rights. But why stop there? Why not

Alcorn Continued from Page 6

people, for serving them. So, Lizzie is entering the National Guard, with an eye on eventually getting her college degree and becoming a Physician’s Assistant through the Guard. She wants to be one of the first people on the scene after a disaster, to be a part of putting the pieces back together, and that’s what the Guard does. Well

force landlords to provide a copy of the entire US Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Federalist Papers, and the Colorado Constitution? Where does it all end? Don’t code enforcement officers have better things to do than to waste time with this ordnance? How many tenants will toss their landlords provided voter registration information into the trash without reading it? The Internet makes accessing voter registration information easier than ever before, and unlike landlord provided voter registration information, Web based voter registration information can’t be thrown away. The Internet makes this ordinance obsolete before it is enacted. The ordinance is a solution in search of a problem. The City Council will conduct its final vote on the ordinance during its June 9 meeting. Please tell the council that you didn’t elect them to bully landlords. Tell them you elected them to protect rights, not to violate them. Chuck Wright, Westminster played, Sunshine! So, graduates, here it is: life. Live it to the fullest! Learn who you are and what drives you, and then use that knowledge to make the world a better place. We’re still here to help — but you have the keys now. Good luck, and God Speed! Music, movies brighten those summer nights

Swallow Hill, Arvada Center team up for concert series By Clarke Reader

creader@colorado communitymedia.com There’s nothing quite like a summer concert under the stars, and the Arvada Center has a new partnership with Swallow Hill Music to bring a variety of talented acts to the center for its summer series. The summer concert series will kick off at the center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., on June 9 with Jamie Cullum and ends on Aug. 30 with The Mavericks. Swallow Hill, which has put on concerts all over the Denver area — perhaps most famously at the Denver Botanic Gardens — is a similar organization to the Arvada Center, according to Tom Scharf, CEO of Swallow Hill Music, which is one of the reasons he is excited about working with center. “We’ve been aware of the program that they’ve been doing over there, and we like to work with unique Colorado nonprofits,” Scharf said. “We’re always looking for ways to help other organizations like ours.” Roger Menell, director of concerts at Swallow Hill, said that he and other Swallow Hill staff received a tour of the Arvada Center and had a chance to meet with staff and learn about the center. “We talked a lot about the history in the area,” he said. “We want to learn what the customers want and are asking for. Who is the audience, and what do they like?” For this first season working together, both Scharf and Menell said the goal is to bring a lot of diversity in terms of performers and see what kind of artists draw the largest crowd. “We have something for singersongwriter fans, jazz, and roots music, which is a specialty of ours,” Menell said. “We’re always looking for ways to get different kinds of artists to perform.” Some highlights for the coming season include the original lineup of The Subdudes, who are going on the

The New Orleans-based band has created an acoustic-tinged style that has made the band extremely popular in the Denver area. According to Menell, in 2013 the bestselling show of the season was the Robert Cray Band, and so the blues-guitar master will be back this year on June 21 for an evening of stellar blues-rock. On Wednesday, July 30, classic singer-songwriters Don McLean and Judy Collins will be visiting the center. Collins has been touring and inspiring artists and audiences in the country and folk genres for years, while promoting social activism in her songs. In addition to these kinds of artist driven performances, the Arvada Center will also play host to the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, the Denver Brass and Colorado Ballet. The Arvada Center is a favorite concert spot not only for its great acoustic and intimate setting, but also for the relaxed atmosphere and picnic baskets that audiences are allowed to bring. “We want to keep growing the program here in Arvada, and we really think we have a schedule that has something for everyone,” Scharf said. “I think this shows what our mission is really about — connecting people to music,” Menell added. “We’re thrilled the community in Arvada has welcomed us.” For tickets and more information call 720-898-7200 or visit www.summeratthecenter.com.

The state ranked an embarrassing No. 44 in Wallethub.com’s rating of the Best and Worst States for Working Moms (http://wallethub.com/edu/best-states-forworking-moms/3565/). For child care, WalletHub ranked Colorado a 42, for professional opportunities a 37, and for work-life balance a 22. You can check out how other states ranked, and the criteria used for the results at the link above.

Hotel Teatro eatery gets update

Prima, the second restaurant inside The Hotel Teatro, helmed by chef Kevin Taylor, closed at the end of March and will reopen in July as The Nickel on the renovated ground floor of the historic hotel. A chef-driven culinary concept, the menu will draw inspiration from its

Rocky Mountain heritage, incorporating locally sourced ingredients into rustic stripped-down Colorado fare. The decor of the space will echo the menu, featuring textiles sourced from the Rocky Mountain region, custom-made furnishings and industrial materials. The restaurant’s name pays homage to the hotel’s storied past. With an original vault dating back to the property’s origins as Denver’s Tramway Building in 1911, the space was once used to collect nickels from customers riding streetcars. Leading The Nickel is chef/restaurateur, Jake Linzinmeir, a certified sommelier and executive chef. Coming from the mountains of Telluride to Denver, Linzinmeir brings an extensive knowledge of homegrown Colorado foods, having personally worked with farmers, ranchers and foragers across the state. Marriott opens in Westminster By Ashley Reimers

areimers@colorado communitymedia.com A new hotel in town is offering modern rooms, easy access to U.S. 36 and a restaurant serving entrees made from fresh and local ingredients. On April 2, the Denver Marriott Westminster full service hotel and Tiller’s Kitchen & Bar opened to the public. The six-floor, 215-room hotel located at US 36 and Church Ranch Boulevard in Westminster, features a new guestroom design, and 12,000 square feet of event, ballroom and meeting space. General Manager Dave Kennedy said hotel staff is dedicated to providing a quality expe-

The 5-8 p.m. event will feature foods from local restaurants including Double D’s Sourdough Pizza, the Exchange Tavern, Egg and I, Kachina Southwestern Grill, Perkins, the Grill at Legacy Ridge and Zoey’s Coffee. Advance tickets are $25 for non-chamber members, $20 for individual members, $15 for business members and $10 for VIP

members. An extra $5 will be added on for tickets purchased at the door. Westminster Chamber president Jennifer Shannon said the event is a way of highlighting local restaurants and also an opportunity for the chamber to host its first major event. “This event is also a good one for the chamber because it’s kind of an in-

Kennedy said the menu is true to American in character, is understandable, and has a metropolitan style. Using ingredients from local farms and ranches as well as other food and beverage producers is also a major focus. One of beers on tap comes from the Westminster Brewery, just down the road. “Our goal is to start locally, and then move out regionally from there if need be,” he said. “We want to follow the ‘food less traveled’ model and try and keep our ingredients within a 50-mile radius.” A unique feature at the Denver Marriott Westminster is the M Club Lounge located on the first floor. The lounge is accessible to

all Marriott Rewards Gold and Platinum Elite members and to other guests for a fee. The lounge provides an area for guests to relax, work and enjoy complementary snacks and beverages. Kennedy said in other hotels, the concierge lounge is usually on a top floor, but for this Marriott, it’s located on the main floor to keep the rewards guests connected to the

rest of the hotel and the other guests. “Guests who use the lounge have access to works stations, Internet and a private dining room,” he said. “People can grab a free bottle of water and have some breakfast. It’s really a place to come and relax or get some work done.” For more information on the Denver Marriott Westminster, visit www. Marriott.com/DENMW.

Jeffco School District negotiations remain uncertain By Crystal Anderson

canderson@colorado communitymedia.com A relationship forged over decades is falling apart. Through federal mediation, negotiating teams from the Jefferson County School District and the Jefferson County Educators Association (JCEA) agreed on a memorandum of understanding May 8, but a later amendment raised concerns the agreement won’t be ratified. Both sides said such a breakdown in negotiation had not occurred in recent memory. “I’m hoping the board will go ahead and ratify the agreement, and we can move forward together,” JCEA President Ami Prichard said. Shortly after the agreement was made, the board of education asked for a provision in the teacher compensation clause, asking that nonprobationary teachers rated ineffective or partially ineffective be ineligible for step increases, which are increases based on years of teaching experience. Prichard said the JCEA was in favor of teacher evaluation, but recent board decisions had raised red flags among some teachers regarding the amendment’s impacts. After speaking with its counsel, the JCEA negotiating team presented the agreement to its board without the amendment, and it was signed. The agreement was then voted on and approved by 88 percent of the association’s voting members, before being sent to the board of education on May 15.

Prior to the association vote, the district’s negotiating team sent out an memo to Jeffco teachers, stating that the initial agreement was tentative, and the JCEA leadership knew that the district might request revisions or modifications to the agreement before the Jeffco school board would approve it. “The JCEA leadership has chosen to not honor that understanding by taking a tentative agreement to ratification,” the memo signed by the district negotiation team states. “JCEA leadership is potentially jeopardizing step increases for the vast majority of teachers who are rated effective or highly effective by asking you to ratify an agreement that will not be approved by members of the Board of Education.” When asked, school board president Ken Witt declined to answer whether the board had directed staff to send the memo. “I will speak to the process,” he said. “If the JCEA is to take a set of terms they know the board cannot agree to, then we go to fact finding (third-party dispute evaluation), which is a new process in this (negotiation), and then the board of education will make a decision based on those recommendations.” The tentative agreement covered step compensation increases for teachers, the standardization of district benefits, additional compensation after the increased cost of PERA, the district’s public pension and retirement fund, and having a competitive wage for newly-hired teachers. According to the memo, compensation for probationary teachers is the only item left to be resolved by both parties. “The district believes it is important to

History made by many at state track New Jeffco Stadium track brought several new state records By Daniel Williams dwilliams@colorado communitymedia.com LAKEWOOD — Storylines were plentiful at this year’s State Track & Field Championships. Records were smashed, legends were cemented and for many it was the last time they will participate as a prep athlete, like Niwot senior Elise Cranny won capped off her prep career by winning her second straight 4A triple crown Saturday at Jeffco Stadium. Cranny won the 800-meter, 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter races for the second consecutive year, capping off one of the iconic careers in Colorado track & field history. But that was just one of endless great stories from this year’s championships. George Washington’s nationally recognized hurdler Dion Hall made history when she smashed the all-classification 100-meter hurdles record of 13.23 with her incredible time of 13.09. The record was owned by Denver South’s Dominique Calloway and stood since 1996. Unbelievably, it was not even her best time in the event. Hall also holds the national record in the event with a 13.01, as well as the 60-meter hurdles national record with a time of 8.11. Expect to see Hall participating in the Olympics someday. However, many new state champions were crowned over the weekend that saw thousands of people pour into Jeffco Stadium — which received a face-lift getting a new track this past offseason, which could be the reason we saw a handful of new records. Holy Family’s Ryan Younggreen was crowned as 110-meter hurdles’ champion with his time of 14.56. Also medaling from Holy Family was Shea Zeman who took fifth in the 100 meter dash (12.85) and sixth in the 200 meter dash (26.40). In addition, Briana Benalcazar took sixth in the 30-meter hurdles (47.33). Broomfield’s Alexei Cox was the 100-meter dash champion after her impressive run of 12.19, narrow holding off Golden’s Payton Miller who came in at 12.22. And in one of the more anticipated events of the championships Horizon’s Megan

Holy Family senior Tyler Dudden does is best Tasmanian Devil impression spinning in a couple swift circles before launching his discus Thursday at Jeffco Stadium. Moonet finished third in the 1,600-meter run at 4:58.18, finishing right behind winner from Cherry Creek Jordyn Colter (4:57.27) and Fort Collins Lauren Gregory (4:57.36).

Playing catch up behind two of the state’s elite on Saturday might have been frustrating for Horizon’s Megan Mooney, center, but a third place state finish is still very impressive and proves she is one of the state’s best.

Athletes on the run State track and field crowns new champs By Scott Stocker Records were broken, and new champions crowned at the state track meet, held at Lakewood’s Jefferson County Stadium last weekend. Peter Gireco of Wheat Ridge didn’t come through with his best effort of the season in the Triple Jump, but when you’re a state champion it’s hard to argue with “effort.” Gireco won the Class 4A state title in the Triple Jump last Saturday in competition at Lakewood’s Jefferson County Stadium with a mark of the 45-feet, 11 1/2 inches. For that matter, Connor Turnage of Highlands Ranch is not about to complain, either, as he won 5A with a 48-9 3/4 effort. Holy Families Ryan Young-

green come through with the 3A title in the 110 Hurdles with a time of :14.56. His effort also helped the Tigers to a fifth-place finish in the team standings with 52 points. The classification, by the way, was won by The Classical Academy with 103 points. “It was a good race to be sure,” Younggreen said. “The key was keeping right on focus and not let the others get to my head. I just wanted to go out, keep going, and do what I had to do.” Although Niwot is not considered a Metro school, there is little doubt that everyone had an eye on the Cougars Elise Cranny in her distant events. After all, she is one of the highest rated prep track stars in the nation. And, she certainly proved her worth in winning the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter events. Not only that, Cranny paced the Cougars to the 4A girls title with 66 points, but a victory

Her time was a heart throbbing 10:17.48. “It was actually stressful and I was very nervous in the 800,” said Cranny, who ran the event in 2:12.05. “I just didn’t want it to get to me. I wanted to stay strong. It was windy and I’m not up to it. I finally got the record in the 3.200 and it was such a fantastic one by Melody to break. I just always want to stay focused in what I do. There are runners out there who will stay with me for a while and that’s good for all of us.” Arvada West’s Stephanie Bess finally came through with a title within the trio of field events. She

Willis false-started in the finals, but teammate Ryan Younggreen would go on to finish sixth. She was second in the Pole Vault behind Loveland’s Heather Waite, as she had more misses with each going over 11-9. She was third in

the Long Jump with a 17-11 effort, an event won by Chyna Ries of Denver East with a mark of 20-4 ½. “Oh, my gosh,” said Bess, who Track continues on Page 21

Contract approved for engineering services

Council unanimously authorized the city manager to execute a contract with Black & Veatch Corporation in the amount of $128,800 to provide engineering services for the Biosolids Dewatering Pilot Testing and Pre-Design project at the Big Dry Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility, plus a contingency amount of $12,880 for a total authorized expenditure of $141,680. Wastewater treatment at the Big Dry Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility results in the generation of a byproduct known as biosolids, which are treated at the plant to make it suitable for land application and subsequently hauled to the city’s Strasburg Natural Resource Farm for ultimate disposals as a farming fertilizer

Expenditure approved for purchase of water supply

Council unanimously authorized spending $2,391,700 from various accounts in the Utility Capital Improvement

Fund and $277,500 from the Stormwater Utility Capital Improvement Fund — Little Dry Creek Drainage Project, for a total of $2,669,200, for the purpose of acquiring additional water supply. City staff said Westminster’s current water supply portfolio and Comprehensive Water Supply Plan have been designed to provide a dependable and resilient supply of high quality water to the water service area. The two sides began mediation, resulting in the tentative memorandum of understanding agreement. With budget deadlines at hand, the two sides must settle on a version of the agreement or move on to fact finding. “With a new superintendent coming on, the end of the year, and all the things happening, I think it would be best to put it (mediation) to rest and move forward,” Prichard said. “I think the agreement we put together is very much in line with what the community expressed and what they want to see.”

A third and a second today – now I want to go for first in my last event, the Triple.” And, that Bess did. Zoe Gilbertson of Mountain Range had one of the finest improvements a freshman could ask for in the 5A, 100-meter hurdles. “I got a PR today and I had been seeded 18th,” Gilbertson said. “I ended up in sixth. I’m so happy as a freshman to have been in the state finals. The key for me this week was just to have a good mindset and to stay confident. Now, I’ve got a lot to live up to over the next three seasons.” Patrick Byerly of Mountain Range and Isaac Green of Monarch, each picked up a Bronze medal in their specialties – Byerly in the 5A Discus and Green in the 800. “I couldn’t believe what I was able to do today,” said Byerly, who threw 152-7 in the

I didn’t PR tough, so that’s a bit of a disappointment.” Green ran the 800 in 1:54.5, not bad seeing that Denver East’s Cerake Geberkidane was the winner in 1:52.3. “I was happy and it couldn’t have been better,” Green said. “I got a PR by one second. I had qualified fifth, so this was an improvement. It was physical out there. I had an eye on first and put everything into it today. I was just a lot of fun.” Faith Christian’s Luke Yeager and Holy Family’s Erich Hixson placed third and fourth, respectively in the 3A 800-meters. Yeager ran 1:56.40 while Hixson clocked in at 1:56.50. The event was won by Robert Delfeld of St. Mary’s in 1:55.32. “I didn’t get what I wanted, but I did get a PR by two seconds,” Yeager said. “The key was to hang in with the others and to be pushed.” Added Hixson, “I got a PR by six seconds today and that’s a pretty fantastic feeling, but I just wish I could have finished higher. But I got beat by good guys and by Luke, who is a very good friend.”

Range High Schools participated in the Tax Help Colorado program through Front

Range Community College. Students and their instructors helped more than 1,000 low-income families from Brighton and Westminster claim tax refunds of more than $2 million. This event gave the opportunity for students to learn, get college credit, and give back to their community.
