Reyes pleads no contest to misconduct County assessor receives deferred judgment, possibility of dismissal after a year By Tammy Kranz

tkranz@ourcoloradonews.com Adams County Assessor Gil Reyes pleaded no contest May 29 to one count of misdemeanor first-degree official misconduct for improperly evaluating properties for a campaign donor. Reyes, 60, originally pleaded not guilty to nine counts of misdemeanor official misconduct and was scheduled to go to trial May 29. Instead, Reyes entered a no contest plea

‘This has been a very emotional and difficult time for my family and me.’ Gil Reyes, Adams County Assessor to one count and the court deferred judgment and sentencing for a year. If after a year Reyes does not commit any criminal offenses, excluding minor traffic offenses, the case will be dismissed, said Dan Recht, who is one of Reyes’ attorneys. “This has been a very emotional and difficult time for my family and me,” said Reyes in a statement released by his attorney. “The prosecution was politically motivated. I am happy to have it behind me.”

Reyes, a Democrat, was re-elected to a four-year term in 2010. Prosecutors say Reyes improperly appraised properties for Majestic Realty Co., a California-based warehouse developer and a contributor to Reye’s campaigns. Majestic has nine warehouses in Aurora. In 2011, the State Board of Equalization ordered reappraisals of the properties after an investigation concluded that Reyes had ordered reduced valuations that resulted in tax reductions for properties associated

with donors to his campaigns, according to the Adams County District Attorney’s office. “After extensive investigation and evaluation by our office and the FBI, we decided that this was the best resolution of the case,” said DA Dave Young, adding that each case must be evaluated based on the strength of the evidence and witnesses. Recht said that Reye’s defense team was confident that if the case had gone to trial, Reyes would have been found not guilty. “However, juries are unpredictable and one can never be sure,” he said. “Now, with this resolution, it is virtually certain that the criminal case pending against Gil Reyes will be dismissed appropriately leaving Gil with no criminal record.” In 2011, Reyes was fined $300 plus $217 in court costs after pleading guilty to an unclassified misdemeanor charge of failure to report gifts of sports tickets he got from Majestic’s vice president.

The Samaras lived in Bennett, Colo., and Young lived in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. The trio were killed by a tornado that struck El Reno, Okla., on May 31. The three men were among 13 whose deaths were attributed to the storms that devastated parts of Oklahoma. Tim Samaras, 55, Paul Samarus, 24 and Young, 45, were chasing a severe, multi-vortex tornado that was headed toward Oklahoma City when it sharply changed direction. Tim was the founder of the tornado research project Twistex, based in Lakewood. “This is a devastating loss to the meteorological, research, and storm chasing communities,” said Tony Laubach of Twistex in a statement on June 1. “I ask that you keep the families in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time. There is some comfort in knowing these men passed on doing what they loved.” Both Tim and Paul were subjects of the Discovery Channel series “Storm Chasers.” The Weather Channel released a statement about their loss on June 2. It stated, “Many of us were fortunate to have worked with them and have great admiration for their work. They went in the field focused on collecting data to enable meteorologists to further the science.”

He’s just got it dialed in.” When it comes to cooking, Cordova learned everything he knows from his grandmother Stella Cordova, an experience he says he wouldn’t trade for anything. He was raised in the restaurant business and once he was old enough to work, Stella put her grandson to work. “I learned everything from cooking to cashiering. I managed her restaurant until I was able to get my own,” he said. “Having the experiences with my grandmother was beautiful. If I could do it all over again, I would.” Cordova plans to have the restaurant open in Westminster, at 7310 N. Federal Blvd., in a couple months.

What an interesting week it has been to watch how culture affects organizations. And when I say “culture,” I am not talking about demographics and ethnicity and cosmetic factors such as those. I am talking about how an organization communicates what matters to it and what is expected of the members of the organization. For instance, you have the Colorado Avalanche hiring Joe Sakic to run the hockey operation, and his first act was to hire Patrick Roy to run the club from the bench. Joe Sakic had many fine qualities as a hockey player, but the one I always admired most was his professionalism; Patrick Roy was an amazingly gifted goalie, but what I remember most about him was his intensity. Well, that, and the fact that the two of them won two Stanley Cup titles together. What sort of message do you think the organization is trying to communicate to their players and their fans? I think we should expect a very different Avalanche team than we’ve seen the last few years. The Denver Broncos have undergone a similar transformation in the last couple of years. First was the hiring of John Elway to run the football operations, which was quickly followed by the Peyton Manning signing and the Tim Tebow departure. That was quite a statement from the organization, but, after a disappointing playoff loss last January, they needed to send another message. So they brought back Alex Gibbs to be an offensive line consultant. Now, it’s possible that they needed more help on the offensive line, but they were pretty good there last year. I think Gibbs’ hiring is a lot more about culture — from all accounts, in the old days, he was the man who enforced the “mean” in the trenches, when the Broncos had unparalleled success with their blocking schemes. And, at the same time that all that was happening in our sleepy little hamlet, you had the odd spectacle in Washington, D.C.

of the news slowly trickling out that the I.R.S. systematically targeted conservatives and conservative groups for “heightened scrutiny” over the past few years. Even stranger, you had any number of pundits arguing that it was not a systemic issue while, every day, new groups from all over the country came out and said they were targeted, too. Do I think somebody from high up the chain — even the White House — delivered an order for this to happen? No, I don’t. For one thing, career bureaucrats know better than to leave a trail that leads back to them by delivering a real order. However, what I do believe is that I.R.S. agents in the field came, somehow, to believe that it would okay for them to do this. Somehow, the culture around the I.R.S. went from coldly professional to politically hostile. And culture comes from somewhere, usually from high up the chain. If government in general, and the I.R.S. in particular, wants to regain its credibility, they would do well to take the example of a couple of Colorado sports teams and attend to their culture. Clean house, and then bring in somebody with an impeccable reputation for ethics and competence. Unless they can, y’know, find somebody from the glory days to turn things over to. Repaving set to begin at 104th Avenue/Church Ranch Boulevard

The City of Westminster Street Operations Division has contracted with Cutler Repaving Inc. to repave the entire section of 104th Avenue/Church Ranch Boulevard, from Wadsworth to Sheridan boulevards. The paving process began on Monday, June 3, and is expected to be complete by Friday, June 28, weather permitting. The project will cause lane closures from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This paving project has been scheduled during daytime hours so it will not conflict with the nighttime CDOT closures on U.S. 36. Alternate routes are strongly advised as traffic delays are expected. areimers@ourcoloradonews.com For the past 10 years, Jack Knight’s story has touched many lives. The 12-year-old Westminster resident has Duchenne, the most common form of childhood muscular dystrophy. He was diagnosed when he was only two, and since then his family and friends have rallied around him in support by hosting the annual Jumping Jack Golf Tournament on June 17 at The Ranch Country Club in Westminster. Proceeds of the tournament will benefit Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, PPMD, a non-profit organization focused on finding a cure for Duchenne. When Jack’s parents, Angela and Darrell Knight found out about the diagnosis, they knew they had to do something, and the tournament seemed like a perfect start. “When we received Jack’s diagnosis Darrell and I knew we had two choices - sit back and see what happens, or do something. We don’t ever sit back,” Angela said. “So our family, including our older son Robert and every distant relative we could reach has done everything we can to raise money and awareness to help Jack and all of the young men living with Duchenne. We believe there is hope for Jack, and that together, we will end Duchenne.” Over the past 10 years the tournament has really grown. What started as a small family tournament has turned into one of the biggest fundraisers for PPMD. Every year the Knights surpass their fundraising goal. Darrell said not only is the tourna-

ment for a good cause, but it’s a place to have a good time enjoying the scenery at The Ranch. “This tournament isn’t about winning, it’s about having fun and supporting Jack and the other kids out there with Duchenne,” he said. But the day doesn’t end after the last golfer makes his final put. Following the tournament is a wine tasting, dinner and a silent and live auction. Angela said this is a great opportunity for people to contribute to the cause if they don’t golf. Inmate cap issue unresolved Sheriff, chiefs at an impasse over number of inmates allowed at jail By Tammy Kranz

tkranz@ourcoloradonews.com The Adams County sheriff and individual community police chiefs are at an impasse regarding the amount of municipal inmates that should be housed at the county jail. Thornton, Westminster, Aurora, Commerce City and Brighton police chiefs aired public safety concerns related to inmates being turned away from the Adams County jail during a press conference May 28 at the Thornton Police Department. Adams County Sheriff Doug Darr responded with his own press conference May 29. Darr said that budget cuts and hiring restrictions made by the board of county commissioners affect jail staffing. “When you’re not properly staffed and you have violent offenders in jail, the issues of safety become real important,” Darr said. “The safety of our personnel and the inmates in our custody are my responsibility and I can’t ignore it and won’t ignore it.” The daily cost to house an inmate at the Adams County facility is $114.21. Kurt Ester, the jail’s division chief, said that in the past couple years, jail staff has had 42,000 hours of overtime. “I’m working these folks to death just to keep them as safe as possible, and we’re doing everything we can to maintain that,” he said. The cap restriction — which is

Photo by Pam Wagner 30 and began on Jan. 1, 2012 — was divided among nine municipalities based on their population in Adams County. The caps, set by Darr, were as follows: Thornton, eight; Westminster, five; Aurora and Commerce City, four apiece; Northglenn and Brighton, three each; and one each for Federal Heights, Arvada and Bennett. The commissioners — during their April 15 meeting — unanimously rescinded the caps placed on the number of inmates sent by cities to the county jail. A couple weeks ago, however, seven prisoners from Aurora were not allowed to be housed at the county jail. Aurora Chief Dan Oates at the

May 28 press conference said these prisoners were sentenced for crimes that included shoplifting, trespassing, misdemeanor battery, motor vehicle theft and prostitution and all had a criminal history. The sheriff disputed the claim that he released violent offenders into the community, saying that in the past he’s seen inmates sentenced to jail for petty offenses such as obscene language, open container and one person who was sentenced for 360 days for loitering. He explained that the inmates that were refused a couple weeks ago were sent to another jail, at Aurora’s expense, and that at that time Aurora was four times over its cap. Before the cap, the municipali-

ties had an average of 130 to 140 inmates at the jail on a daily basis. The chiefs pointed out that the cities have worked hard to reduce that average by 65 percent to 44 daily prisoners. Darr also pointed out that domestic violence offenders were not counted against the cap and that the cap was not a hard 30. Darr said two things would resolve the staffing issues at the jail — lower the volume of inmates and hire more staff. Last fall the commissioners gave Darr approval to hire 13 people. The sheriff said that hiring for those positions would take time. “From the day that you advertise for a law enforcement position, through the selection process, through the training process — that means the academy and the field training officer programs — it’s almost one year before you can independently deploy them for service,” he said. The Adams County Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee was formed in 2012 to study ways to reduce the number of inmates at the jail and it made its recommendations in March. “Those formal recommendations included a uniform bond schedule cap, standardized pay-orserve sentences and a 20 percent reduction in non-mandatory sentence lengths,” said Ruth Kedzior, assistant county administrator. “The commissioners encourage the cities and the sheriff to continue to seek solutions to the jail issues through the Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee while at the same time protecting public safety in our community.”

Community event to enjoy Jazz fest in Westminster brings together music and art

areimers@ourcoloradonews.com The Jazz and Art Festival in historic Westminster will attract people from all over the north metro area for a day of smooth music and creative art. With more than 1,000 people attended last year. This year’s festival will run from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, at the Hidden Lake High School athletic field, 72nd Avenue and Lowell Boulevard, and will feature a line-up of well-established jazz musicians and a variety of art, food and business vendors. Starting the day will be local jazz musician and festival organizer Eric Trujillo. Last year, with the help of friends, colleagues and fellow musicians, Trujillo, who is also the owner of Mi Vida Strings, brought his passion for jazz to the community of Westminster for the first festival. After hearing positive feedback, Trujillo says all of his efforts are paying off. “So many people are excited about this year, it’s been really great,” he said. “Last year we knew we put together a great show, and this year is no different. We have Grammy-nominated jazz musicians.” Following Trujillo on the line-up is the Maria D. Lopez with the Manny Lopez Latin Jazz Trio, Lionel Young, Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts and Nelson Rangell throughout the rest of the day. Jazz music is just portion of the festival. Becky Silver, owner of Aar River Gallery in Westminster, said in years past, the community enjoyed an art festival, but now with the addition of music, the Jazz and Art Festival is really becoming a place artists enjoy. “Last year I had artists tell me the Jazz Festival was the best festival they had in the area,” she said. “We’ll have artists showcasing a variety of things, like jewelry and paintings. It’s just a great opportunity for people in the north metro area to get a free jazz festival and check out great art without having to drive a long distance.” In addition to the festival, the 2nd Saturday Art Walk will take place until 8 p.m. on 72nd and 73rd avenues. A smart direction on school safety Armed guards patrol banks, ballparks and airports. It is rarely argued they are out of place in those venues. Schools are different. They are places of learning, places for children, our nation’s most precious resource. Years after Columbine, months after Sandy Hook, talk of placing armed security personnel in schools evokes a broad range of reactions. If done wrong, such a move could be disruptive and create fear among students. But if done right, there is little to lose and perhaps, lives to be saved. We see a partnership in Douglas County between the school district and local law enforcement agencies as an example of a way to bolster security while allowing for an unfettered learning environment. Beginning with the next school year in August, plainclothes officers from the sher-

OUR VIEW iff’s office and three police departments will patrol the county’s public elementary and middle schools. At the high school level, armed resource officers have been a presence on campus for years. A safety committee’s work on this new program began shortly after December’s mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. It is a multifaceted plan that incorporates security measures beyond the presence of officers, including improved screening of visitors and enhanced use of technology.

But the move to place armed officers on campuses, announced May 30, is what has made headlines. That’s understandable. Creating a police state at our schools is not something anyone should want. To be clear, though, that’s not what is being planned in Douglas County. The School Marshal Program will see deputies and police officers assigned to schools in nearby proximity, and the officers will be a daily presence at the schools. The plan is to allow for greater ability to respond to an incident, as well as be a deterrent to those with ill intent. “We’re not aware of any other program like this in the country,” said Elizabeth Fagen, superintendent of the Douglas County School District. Strengthening community bonds is among the most laudable elements of the

program. Douglas County’s safety committee has representatives from law enforcement agencies, the school district and various community members. Some may question whether the program will be worth its price tag — at least $500,000 on the part of the school district and an undisclosed amount absorbed by the law enforcement agencies. It’s a fair question, but we’re not prepared to set a dollar limit on children’s safety. Douglas County is among the most affluent areas of the entire nation, and the program’s cost may make it prohibitive for many school districts and communities to fully implement. But the root ideas of a multi-pronged approach and community cooperation are worthy of serious consideration in Colorado and around the country.

Lobato decision is a good call Last week’s Colorado Supreme Court decision to uphold the current school financing system was a good call in my opinion. The “Lobato case” as it had been labeled started in 2005 with plaintiff eight-grade student Taylor Lobato from the Town of Center in the San Luis Valley being among a group claiming that Colorado’s public school finance act was unconstitutional. They claimed that the state’s system for funding schools failed to provide equality in funding between rich and poor school districts. The state Constitution mandates a fair and equitable distribution of state funds among all Colorado school districts.

MEAT CLEAVER APPROACH

While it is fair to say that the current state law has its numerous flaws and deficiencies, the “Lobato lawsuit” was a meat clever approach to rectifying inequities. One consultant who was familiar with the lawsuit estimated that it could have cost the State of Colorado (the taxpayers) an additional $4.0 Billion annually if the plaintiffs had succeeded in the legal attack. The state, and in turn its taxpayers, would have a huge uphill climb to produce that kind of tax revenue to be in compliance with any court order along this line. At the same time, it is noted that the estimated cost was only one person’s opinion. In the meantime, the Colorado Legislature produced legislation that would address some of the concerns with the current funding act if approved by voters this coming November.

TIME TO RETOOL A 20-YEAR-OLD APPROACH

Sen. Mike Johnston of Denver was the master mind of the bill, which rewrites the State School Finance Act. It includes an emphasis on added funding for poorer school districts which have a heavier concentration to teach English as a second language as well as addressing the needs of at-risk students. Also, if approved, the bill would fund full-day kindergarten across the state along with a half day of preschool. State and local

funding shares for each of the 178 school districts would be recalculated by adjusting for differences in median income and at-risk students with the goal of determining each district’s financial ability to pay. Then the state would backfill the gap with state dollars.

A $1 BILLION QUESTION

However, and it is a BIG “however,” the whole revised funding act is predicated on voter approval of increased school funding to the tune of $1 Billion annually. The amount and type of taxing to achieve this amount is still “up for grabs.” There are options in the bill which will have to be sorted out and then incorporated into ballot language for this coming November’s election. It will be a tall order for any group or coalition to convince Colorado voters that this is a worthwhile approach. While I support the need for additional funding for public schools, I hesitate to “sign on” for a $1 billion increase in funding without more details. Plus, with the Colorado Supreme Court’s Lobato decision, it makes it less compelling, at least from a legal standpoint, to open our checkbooks. I am eager to learn more about what the taxing package will look like, how much funding each school district would receive and how the additional funds would be used. have instrumental music classes. • Sixth-grade students still will be able to attend Outdoor Lab. • Schools will not see a reduction in teacher-librarians. The board also restored salaries to 2010 levels for all Jeffco Schools employees. Employees sacrificed 3 percent of their pay during tough economic times. Additional funds from the state will cover these costs and the move results in increased days in school for students and more professional development for teachers and principals. Staff will continue to absorb the increasing cost of health care, which has tripled over the last 10 years.

Back at the County

Now, to the problems at the Adams of County Commissioner post. Seems the rict J new commissioners are getting pretty strident. My goodness, where is freedom of speech if folks can’t assemble at the doors of the commissioner office. I It is our county! It’s a pretty weak defense if the only reason to keep protesters out is a storm water levy question and yes, it is considered a tax anyway you slice it.

Because we can’t predict the future, the 2013-14 budget will put $9.5 million in our rainy day fund to help us weather any monetary storms ahead. Not only is it required by law, it is fiscally sound decisionmaking. After all, it was the district’s rainy day fund – as well as employee salary reductions – that helped us prevent deeper cuts to classrooms. It’s time to slowly rebuild those reserves. As the board took its final vote on the budget, motions were offered to increase the number of librarians in schools, reduce costs for Outdoor Lab and decrease bus fees. It was suggested that the money to pay for these additional costs would come from reserves. As the economy improves, I’m hopeful we will be able to address these issues and others in the future; they’re sound recommendations. But now is not the right time to take on those additional expenses, and they are not true to the commitment we made to voters when they passed 3A and 3B. The state has cut $1 billion from public

Wow! Talk about spoiling the Westminster City Council Mayoral contest in November. Outgoing Councilor Mary Lindsey threw a real curve ball hat into the race. That means Herb Atchison, Bob Briggs, Scott Major and Mary Lindsey are all in the race. Westminster has a penchant for electing women and this, the only woman in the race so far could split up that 40 percent requirement so no one gets elected on the first round. This is going to get real interesting as already Bob Briggs has a colored ad in last week’s Westminster Window. He calls himself “home grown” but others say he lived in unincorporated Adams County for a number of years. It’s no secret Mayor Nancy McNally is firmly behind Scott Major and that’s a big boost for Scott.

education. Even with the passage of 3A, which provides $39 million in funding, Jeffco Schools is below 2009-10 spending levels. It’s important to underscore that 3A does not include new programs – it only maintains what we have now and helps prevent further budget cuts next year. We are grateful to Jeffco voters for their support of 3A and 3B. The budget approved by the board on a 4-1 vote maintains the overall financial health of the district by balancing the learning needs of all 85,000 students and has been vetted over a long period of time with our community. It’s impressive that more than 3,000 people took part in the budget development process, which began with our Citizens’ Budget Academy two years ago and ended with public hearings this month. Thanks to good financial stewardship, our students, staff and community have a strong, solid budget that saves valuable programs and people, and invests dollars where they matter most – on student achievement.

Adams 12 serving free meals to students this summer By Ashley Reimers

areimers@ourcoloradonews.com Although school is out, food services continue in the Adams 12 Five Star School District. The district started its summer breakfast and lunch program on May 28 offering both meals for free to all children in the community. The federally funded program runs through Aug. 9 and is open to any child ages one to 18. Chris Sjolin, nutrition supervisor and summer program coordinator, said it doesn’t matter what a child’s family’s financial situation is — the only requirement is that children must eat the meal at one of the program’s locations. “We also offer lunch to adults for $3. That way families can eat together,” she said. “Or the parent or guardian can bring their own lunch and eat that while the child eats the free lunch.” The program is being offered at six schools: Centennial Elementary, Coronado Hills Elementary, Leroy Drive Elementary, STEM Launch, The Studio School and Federal Heights Elementary. Breakfast will be served

from 8-8:30 a.m. at all schools. Lunch will be served from 10:45 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Centennial and Leroy Drive, and from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the other schools. Sjolin said the meals will be similar to the meals served during the school year. “We will offer one hot meal option each day for lunch and breakfast as well as a turkey hoagie option on one of the days for lunch,” she said. “This way the children are getting the nutrition they need in the summer months when school is not in session.” Last year approximately 11,000 breakfasts were served and approximately 26,000 lunches were served. Sjolin said this year she hopes to draw more middle and high school students to the program, especially when two-a-day practices for sports begin. “It would be wonderful to capture the older students because we don’t get enough of them,” she said. “For those athletes who have practice during the day, the program is great for them to catch a healthy lunch for free.” For more information on the Adams 12 summer food program contact Nutrition Services at 720-972-6061.

vvela@ourcoloradonews.com Jeffco students will spend more time in the classroom next year, and teachers’ salaries will be restored to 2010 levels under a new school district budget approved May 30. With a 4-1 vote, the Jefferson County Board of Education passed the 2013-2014 budget, which benefited from last year’s voter-approved mill levy override, and an increase in state revenues that will translate to greater district funding. The district’s shift in fortune is notable, considering that it wasn’t that long ago that it had planned on 20132014 expenditure reductions totaling $45 million — coupled with the loss of 600 jobs. But the new budget still falls short of full-funding status. “We’re not entirely out of the woods,” said Board President Lesley Dahlkemper “We’re behaving cautiously and conservatively as we move forward.” Dahlkemper, Jill Fellman, Robin Johnson and Paula Noonan voted in favor. The lone no vote came from Laura Boggs, who expressed concern afterward that the district would end up having to make more spending reductions down the road. Boggs unsuccessfully tried to amend the budget to allow for the hiring of more teacher-librarians, the elimination of bus fees, and fees as-

sociated with advanced placement classes. And, Noonan sought to reduce student outdoor lab fees as “one small way to help (parents) out and their children out.” However, the majority of the board’s members rejected those efforts. Miller said that it “would be wonderful” for the district Stevenson to be able do everything it wants, but that “this is not the ideal world right now.” “If somebody can find a way to fund that, I’d love it,” she said. Highlights of the new budget – which will operate from July 1 through June of next year – include fewer early release days for students, from nine last year to five for the coming school year. This means that students will receive about six to eight hours of more classroom time, compared to last year. School employees also benefit from the new budget. Teachers will work four additional days next school year. And, after having experienced a three percent pay cut over the last few years, all Jeffco employees will see their pay restored to 2010 levels. Also, employee furlough days will be eliminated from next year’s budget. Jeffco will receive more money from the state than it has in recent budget cycles. Thanks to improved revenues, the state, under the current School Finance Act, has legislated an overall increase in revenues to all schools

for the first time since the 2009-2010 school year, according to budget documents. With that funding, the district will see its per-pupil funding reach $6,540, an increase over recent budgets. The total planned funding amount that the district has budgeted for the coming fiscal year is still about $48 million short of what was budgeted in the 2009-2010, according to budget information. The new budget includes funds collected from the $39 million mill levy override that voters approved last year. But that money will not equate to the creation of new programs or restoration of old cuts. Most of the funds from the override will go toward filling a $45 million budget gap that would have existed, had taxpayers not stepped in last year. The district, which is made up of about 86,000 students and makes up 10 percent of the state’s school funding, has lost more than $78 million from its general funding operating expenditure budget over the last four years. Superintendent Cindy Stevenson said before the meeting that the district still has funding problems, but that she is pleased with many aspects of the budget. “We’re holding steady,” she said. The budget does not take into account assumed bumps in revenue from Senate Bill 213, the Future School Finance Act. The bill, which overhauls the state’s school funding system, was recently signed by Gov. John Hickenlooper. However, voters must approve the tax increases associated with the bill before it takes effect.

The Jefferson Symphony Orchestra (JSO) has announced three special con-

Standley Lake’s multi-sport athlete Zoie Hoben was awarded 5A Female Athlete of the Year. “I loved every minute of my time at Ralston Valley. I may have had a really good athletic career here (at Ralston Valley) but it’s only because I had great coaches and teammates,” Svejcar said. Ralston Valley’s Jeff Gomer was awarded the 5A Female Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Mustang’s basketball team to the Great 8. And Chatfield’s Steve Schimpeler was named 5A Male Coach of the Year. Conifer’s Larry Fitzmaurice was named 4A Male Coach of the Year, and Evergreen’s Jenifer Mintle was dubbed 4A Female Coach of the Year. A pair of Columbine assistant coaches were both named 5A Assistant Coaches of the Year in Dirk Visser (Female) and Derek Holliday (Male).

Green Mountain’s Fred Johnson was named 4A Male Team Assistant Coach of the Year. And Evergreen’s Greg Cooper was tabbed as 4A Female Team Assistant Coach of the Year. Columbine and Alameda were both awarded with the 5A and 4A Paul Davis Award. The award symbolizes athletics as an integral part of the overall educational program. It is given to honor schools displaying the qualities of honesty, fair play, cooperation, competitive spirit and respect for the rules throughout their athletic program. In addition, Ralston Valley and D’Evelyn both won the 5A and 4A Fred Steinmark Award., named for the iconic Freddie Steinmark, a 1964-67 three-sport scholar-athlete at Wheat Ridge High School. The award symbolizes athletic excellence in all sports and is given annually to the Jefferson County League high school with the best overall league record in male and female varsity sports.

Colorado high school seniors met underclassmen at the Rockies High School All-Star Baseball Game where Seniors beat Futures 4-1 Sunday at Coors Field. Monarch senior Cole Maltese hit a tworun single in the second inning with the bases loaded, which was the key moment of the game offensively. But a handful of the other 40 players showed why they were invited to the marquee All-Star game for the best of the best Colorado high school baseball has to offer. “It’s a who’s who out here,” Bear Creek’s Alex DeBell said. “It’s all of the guys you hear about and all of the guys you read about. WESTMINSTER POLICE BRIEFS Second-degree burglary: An officer was dispatched May 17 to the 8000 block of Decatur Street in reference to a burglary. Two women returned home to find that someone had entered their home and stole numerous items. Missing were two laptop computers, watches and jewelry, shoes, electronic games, cash and a gift card totaling $4,962. Pry marks were observed at the front screen door and the bottom latch of the front door. A witness said he saw two Hispanic men at the home, but he never actually saw them enter. Identity theft: A 45-year-old Westminster woman reported an identity theft May 14. She said her credit card company informed her that her Target card was used fraudulently in Pennsylvania. A $217.39 purchase was made. A second attempt to use the card was denied. The woman said she never lost possession of her card. Theft: A 22-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man, both of Westminster, were arrested May 14 when they were caught trying to steal merchandise at Gordman’s at 9350 Sheridan Blvd. A loss prevention officer observed them take a $6.99 bracelet and a $12.99 bottle of perfume. Because of the man’s criminal history with several incidents of failure to

appear, he was taken into custody and transported to the Adams County jail after being processed at the police department. The woman was issued a summons and released. Second-degree burglary: An officer was dispatched May 13 to the 3600 block of 77th Avenue in reference to a burglary. A realtor told the officer that the house was under contract and a break-in was discovered during an inspection of the house. Someone gained entry into a crawl space and removed $150 in copper pipe. There is no suspect information. Theft: A 49-year-old Denver woman was arrested May 13 after she was caught trying to steal merchandise from Gordman’s at 9350 Sheridan Blvd. A loss prevention officer watched the woman as she selected multiple items of clothing and some shoes, not paying much attention to what she was selecting, and then concealed them in a Gordman’s shopping bag. She then passed all points of sale with the merchandise totaling $293.66. She was issued a summons and released. Items in the police reports are compiled from public information contained in police department records.
