New name, more activities By Ashley Reimers
WESTY FEST SCHEDULES
areimers@colorado communitymedia.com The Westminster Faire is no more. Westy Fest has taken its place, bringing a fresh feel to a longtime annual event. With new activities and more entertainment, the City of Westminster is hoping Westy Fest will surpass the community’s expectations and bring in a new crowd. “This would have been the 24th year of the Westminster Faire and the city just felt like it was always being compared to Broomfield and Thornton’s events and people love those events,” said Heather Hammarstrom, recreation specialist for the city. “So we are now trying to find new ways of making our event bigger and more community-oriented with the new Westy Fest.” This year’s Westy Fest is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, at City Park, 10475 Sheridan Blvd. The day will feature tons of activities for little ones, like the Home Depot workshop tent, bouncy castles, climbing wall and giant slides. Youngsters can also play free carnival games to win prizes and have the opportunity to climb on fire trucks and dump trucks, which is new this year. For the pets in the family, Yappy Hour will be 1 to 4 p.m. and will offer free professional pet photos, free treats, ice water pools and low-cost vaccinations, licensing and micro-

There will also be two entertainment stages and plenty of vendors selling a variety of items and foods. “We are focusing on our mission of nature, wellness and literacy so we are adding outdoor adventure type activities like bringing in a water tank where people can try out kayaking,” Hammarstrom said. “We are also adding a new slack line park so people have the opportuni-
ty to try that out too. We just want to keep an adventure aspect to the vent.” The city is also hoping to attract a new crowd with the addition of the Westy Craft Brew Fest, happening 5-8 p.m. at Christopher Fields Softball Complex, 5875 W. 104th Ave. For a $20 wristband, people 21 and over get unlimited samples from local breweries while enjoying music during a free concert. Those
who don’t want to partake in the brew fest, can still attend and enjoy the music. “The city really wanted to reach a different crowd, people who may not particularly enjoy the activities at Westy Fest,” Hammarstrom said. “We’re hoping it will be a success and take off for future years.” Hammarstrom said with Westy Fest, the city is keeping what was good about the Westminster Faire,
but is also adding some new and fun activities. She said with the name Westminster Faire, many times people thought of it as a country western fair or a renaissance fair. By changing the name, the city is trying to set the event apart from those connotations, she added. “Westy Fest is way to celebrate a great city and an opportunity for people to try new things like kayaking and get excited about being outdoors,” Hammarstrom said. DigitalGlobe headed to Westminster By Ashley Reimers
areimers@coloradocommunitymedia.com Longmont-based DigitalGlobe is moving to Westminster. As a provider of commercial high-resolution earth observation and advanced geospatial solutions, DigitalGlobe will take up residence at 1300 W. 120th Ave., currently home to Avaya Inc. By the end of the year, Avaya will hand over the keys to DigitalGlobe and move east to new location in Thornton. Initially, DigitalGlobe was planning on moving their headquarters to Broomfield, but after an unsolicited offer to lease the Avaya building, the location shifted. Now DigitalGlobe will take on a 15-year lease in the 480,000-squarefoot building. By summer of next year, about 1,700 employees will move from Longmont to the new Westminster location. “Although this was an unexpected series of events, once we determined the potential of this opportunity we moved diligently and
quickly to finalize a lease that secures the best interests of our company, team members, customers and shareowners,” said Jeffrey Tarr, president and chief executive officer of DigitalGlobe. “DigitalGlobe believes this decision is a win for the state of Colorado, allowing for flexible business growth for the company and future high-tech jobs for the northern Denver corridor.” Tarr said the building in Westminster will allow for less disruption during the move to employees and operations. The building also already has the infrastructure and physical security required by the company and will require less capital investment to be fully adapted to the company’s current and long-term business needs, he added. “We regret any disappointment to the cities and partners associated with our previous announcement,” Tarr said. “We could not have anticipated this change in our relocation plans but are pleased with the benefits the Westminster facility offers.”
City of Westminster economic development director, Susan Grafton said DigitalGlobe’s future presence in the city is another step in the city’s overall goal of maintaining a strong and vital economy. She said DigitalGlobe also brings a new industry sector to Westminster, one that continues to grow. “As economic developers our role is grow a very strong and vital economy for the longterm,” Grafton said. “So by having DigitalGlobe in our city, we are making a major step forward in that.” Grafton is also pleased the city isn’t losing Avaya to a city further away. “Avaya is moving to Thornton, but they are still part of Westminster’s economy because Thornton, Broomfield and Westminster share an economy here,” she said. “People in our community that work there will be staying in our community and continuing to support the telecommunications industry in the north metro area.”

Chambers strive to make connections Networking is not a lost art, business groups’ leaders say By Chris Rotar
crotar@coloradocommunitymedia.com High heels, ties knotted tight, cell phones set to silent mode. Polite conversation permeates the room. Business cards are dealt with a smile. Eggs, bacon, breakfast burritos. Captains of industry sip coffee. They’re juiced. They are gathered at a chamber of commerce function, in a town near you, in hopes of gleaning the nuggets of wisdom that can take their business to the next level. This morning’s presentation could be on commercial real estate sales, or it could be on the need to expand public transportation. Some might say, however, that what happened in the minutes before — the handshakes, the eye contact, the heaping helpings of conversation — is the main attraction. No doubt, networking remains vital in the business world. But are scenarios like the one above as important as they once were?
Name tag vs. hashtag Lakewood resident Ernie Witucki was the CEO of chambers of commerce in Colorado, Indiana and New Mexico in the 1960s and 1970s. He believes convincing chamber members to attend networking events can be a tough sell. “It’s hard to get chamber members to break away from work,” said Witucki, who remains active in chambers in Jefferson County. “Social events are good, but you’re only reaching a very small portion of your members. “Everybody’s in a rush today. It is tough to get chamber members to attend an event after, let’s say, 9 a.m. Once they get entrenched in their business, they try to protect their time.” Enter technology. Most Denver metro-area chambers that
TURNOVER AT THE TOP The faces of chambers of commerce, quite literally, are changing. At least four metro-area chambers have had their top official step down so far in 2014. Several other area chambers, including the ones in Arvada, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree and Parker, have seen turnover at the top since the summer of 2013. But the Denver suburbs aren’t alone. “There’s a ton of turnover going on everywhere,” Dave Kilby, president and CEO of the Western Association of Chamber Executives said. “I tell people the chamber industry is an opportunity industry. Half of our CEOs in the West are 55 or over. There are people almost weekly that are leaving because of retirement. There are a lot of CEO searches right now.” Retirement is one reason. But also, chamber leaders commonly leave for a higher-paying post, Kilby said. In other cases, he said, the job just didn’t live up to the hype. In any case, Kilby says, don’t look for a common thread in the Denver-area turnover. “I think in every one of those CEO changes, there’s responded to a Colorado Community Media survey say they are embracing the Internet’s role in facilitating connections. Andrea LaRew, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Highlands Ranch, said there is no doubt online is changing the game. She sees businesses doing more with less manpower and, like Witucki, acknowledges members’ time constraints. “We recognize that the Internet is often the first place people go for answers,” she said. “Therefore, we have increased our online presence in an effort to meet our members’ needs. “We are implementing new ways to engage our members through online communities, webinars, and new software that allows our members to communicate with each other.” To Shiley Johnson, interim CEO at the Metro North Chamber of Commerce, the Internet is an essential tool if chambers are to remain relevant. “In that regard, we have put technology to good use, creating a website that enhances our sense of community,” he said.
probably a different story,” he said. “There’s nothing in the water; it’s just a coincidence. You could go to a similar geography and find something similar.” Below is a look at some metro-area chambers that have seen their president resign in 2014: Golden Chamber of Commerce Gary Wink (19 years) Resigned January 2014 New president/CEO Dawn Smith Metro North Chamber of Commerce Deborah Obermeyer (15 years) Resigned May 2014 Recruitment process in progress South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce John Brackney (10 years) Resigned March 2014 New president/CEO Robert Golden West Chamber of Commerce Brian Willms (2 years) Resigned May 2014 New president/CEO Dan Rodriguez

In addition to their own websites, chambers can use tools like Facebook and Meetup.com to broaden their reach. At the same time, those and similar online tools can be utilized by businessmen and women in lieu of chamber membership. “The chamber is important, but there are lots of other new groups,” said John Brackney, former longtime president and CEO of the South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce. “It’s hard to determine whether any of them are valuable or not. It’s easier to get the message out, but there are a lot of them. You get lost in all the messages.”
Keeping it real Denver Botanic Gardens’ CEO Brian Vogt, who preceded Brackney as chief of the South Metro Chamber, can testify to the benefits of technology’s evolution. “First, fax machines were the greatest thing ever, then the Internet. You don’t have to print so many things, like newsletters and bulletins … It’s a huge cost savings, and a huge pain-in-the-neck savings.”
3 OF 3 PART SERIES
Just as it can promote going green, the Internet can be a handy alternative to attending networking events in brick-andmortar buildings. But to many, a primary benefit of joining a chamber of commerce is face time. “While it’s true that many needs can be met on the Internet, I passionately believe that chambers of commerce will remain relevant because they are people-based,” said Donna Russell, a board member for the Lone Tree Chamber of Commerce. “People still rely on other people. A business can create exposure for itself through the Internet, but there is only one way to bring a community together, and that’s by bringing them together and putting a face on personality, integrity and, ultimately, a professional.” The same can be said for enticing people and businesses to town, chamber leaders say. “Yes, people can go online and research a community,” said Pam Ridler, president of the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce. “When they get here, though, you have to have that human connection. So we try to provide that kind of thing. How can we introduce people in the community? You can try to do it online, but to me, that isn’t longlived. “We create relationships.” — Jennifer Smith and Amy Woodward contributed to this report.

Brewery serving up cask ales, live music By Ashley Reimers
areimers@colorado communitymedia.com From the red accents and lighting, to the beer names, Westminster Brewing Co. is taking its own spin on the English-style pub. Head brewer and co-owner Brian Bissell is also going as far as serving up cask ales, the original beer on draft. “We really wanted an English feel to the place. That’s why we’re in Westminster, the sister city of Westminster, England,” Bissell said. “We fought tooth and nail to be in Westminster, we wanted to be here wholeheartedly.” Westminster Brewing Co., which opened eight months ago at 7655 W. 108th Ave. Unit 600, has four cask ales: Olde Irish Ale, Olde 1066, a traditional take on the
English Bitter style, Olde Cain, an ale version of the summer seasonal black IPA and Olde Moses, a chocolate porter. Cask ale or cask-conditioned beer is unfiltered and unpasteurized beer conditioned and served from a cask without additional nitrogen or carbon dioxide pressure. Cask beers have significantly less carbonation, Bissell said, and are served at a cellar temperature of about 50 F. “With cask ales, you use hand draws to actually pump out the beer,” Bissell said. “There is giant handle that you pump out like a well because there is no pressure behind it. It’s not even a valve, it’s literally a pump.” Westminster Brewing Co. also offers a variety tap beers from Irish red ale to German-style light ale. Beers are served in 20 ounce proper pints. The brewery is also a
hangout for local musicians to perform during evening jam sessions and concerts. Bissell said there is an underlying theme at the brewery to become the community location for people to grab a beer. “We want to be like a Cheers location and focus on being localized,” he said. “I’m sure other places do this too, but we’re always trying to remind ourselves to bring the local aspect.” One way the brewery is keeping things local is using wood from Standley Lake High School’s old bleachers as part of the design in the tasting lab and in the brewing
room. Bissell said all of the wood along the walls, the drink rails, the taster flight trays and even the bar itself is made out of the old bleachers, just a bit refurbished. “With the base boards in the brewing room we actually kept the wood as is,” he said. “So there’s still the gum on there and the carvings on them. We love them.” Westminster Brewing Co. is open 3-9 p.m. Monday through Thursdays, 1-10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 1-8 p.m. on Sundays. Local church goes solar By Ashley Reimers
areimers@colorado communitymedia.com Members of Advent Lutheran Church in Westminster celebrated the dedication of two new installments over the weekend. After the July 27 service, the congregation dedicated a new solar panel garden and a new playground — long-time goals finally attained. “We started talking about going solar four years ago, shortly after I started at the church,” Pastor Barb Martens said. “It was always something I wanted to do, so to have it happen is huge for me.” One hundred solar panels were installed in the land behind the church. The cost of the panels and the installment was no cost to the church. Martens said the church went through an organization called Interfaith Power and Light, which made the investment in the solar panels. She said the church donated the land and will now buy power from Interfaith Power and Light. “By using solar, we will end up paying less than we are paying now,” Martens said. Before any of this could happen, the congregation took a vote and the result was overwhelmingly in favor of going solar. Martens said the vote shows the congregation is taking steps in being good stewards of the environment. “These panels are a small statement, but it’s been a long process getting here,” she said. “It feels great
The congregation of Advent Lutheran Church in Westminster dedicated solar panels and a new playground on July 27. Photo by Ashley Reimers to have them out running and doing their thing, helping the earth.” Church council president Karen Trinidad is just as excited as her pastor. “It’s exciting to see Advent take a step toward the future doing something for the environment,” she said. “We’ll be able to at least give back what we take from the power grid.” For the younger church generation, it was the new playground that really stood out on Sunday. This endeavor also started four years ago and ever since then, the church has been raising money to build the outdoor
area. Martens said 10 babies were born last year, so the playground will be come in very handy. “The playground really represents new life in the church,” she said. “Both the panels and the playground show what a small church can do if they put their mind to it. It’s a wonderful thing to see and we thank God for everything.” Advent Lutheran Church at 7979 Meade St. in Westminster, hosts worship services at 6:30 p.m. Thursday evenings and at 9:30 a.m. Sunday mornings. Representative hoping for a second term By Ashley Reimers areimers@colorado communitymedia.com For Dominick Moreno, his work at the capital has just begun. The District 32 representative and Democrat is gearing up for the November election, hoping to earn the voter’s approval for two more years. He serves part of Commerce City and southwest unincorporated Adams County and is facing Republican candidate Edgar Antillon. “I’m running again because I want to continue my service to the community,” he said. “I’ve achieved a lot of good things so far, but there is still a lot to do.” During the recent session this year,
multiple bills sponsored by Moreno were signed into law, including Senate Bill 14019, which clarifies state tax code to allow married same-sex couples to file joint state tax returns, just as they file their federal taxes and House Bill 14-1156, the Eligibility School Lunch Protection Program, which extends the annual appropriation of funds to provide lunches Moreno at no charge to all students up to fifth grade who qualify for free and reduced meals. “Being able to ensure children are being fed during school so they can learn at their top potential was a great accomplishment for me,” Moreno said. “I want to continue
to make a difference in my community.” According to Moreno, about 99 percent of his bills this past session passed with bipartisan support. Working collaboratively with both sides of the aisle is something he says he’ll continue to do if re-elected. He said because of this type of support it shows that the bills he works on make sense to the people of Colorado. “During my time at the capital I was surprised to find out that both Republicans and Democrats do work well together,” he said. “Both sides of the aisle do cooperate quite well together and work better together than at the federal level. I plan on continuing that cooperation.” If re-elected, Moreno also plans on putting a strong focus on the state budget and finding ways to bring some of that money
to Adams County. But until then, he’s in full campaign mode, walking the streets speaking one-on-one with his constituents. He said with a mid-term election it can sometimes be tough to connect with voters, but he’s determined to meet with as many as possible. “Because it’s a mid-term election, without a presidential election, I have to work that much harder to knock doors, make phone calls and send out my mailers to the folks in my district,” he said. “This election is just as important as any other election. I have to make sure people know why I’m running and what I stand for and remind people to just get out and vote.” For more information on Moreno and his campaign, visit www.dominickmoreno. com.
Hansen hopes to secure re-election for District 3 Commissioner highlights progress made during his first term By Tammy Kranz
tkranz@colorado communitymedia.com While there have been many changes during his first four years as a commissioner, Erik Hansen said there is more work to be done. Hansen is running for a second term as the District 3 representative on the Adams County Board of Commissioners. Some of the accomplishments during his time on the board, he said, include implementing a number of ethical reforms, increasing transparency on the county’s website, reforming the county’s purchasing policies and streamlining department services. “Those are significant changes we made to how Adams County government functions,” said the Republican incumbent. “I think we’re delivering better services now than when we used to.” Prior to serving on the board, Hansen was the mayor of Thornton from 2007 until the time he was sworn in as
a commissioner in January 2011. He had served as a councilman in Thornton from 2001 to 2007. When Hansen began his term, the county had been embroiled in the Quality Paving scandal that involved overcharging the county for services. He was the first new face on the board in at least eight years and he immediately began to push for ethical reforms to clean up the county, he said. Hansen “I think you had a board that had been there a long time and didn’t want to change,” he said. “When I was elected I think it shook things up a bit.” Aside from the reforms, Hansen said he also was the push behind placing a question on the ballot that allowed an increase of members of the board from three to five, which voters approved. “That’s the kind of thing that will provide better government to the people,” he said. He also noted the progress made in the area of transportation since he was elected to the board, including the start of the construction of the
FasTracks on the North Metro Line and the Interstate 25 high occupancy vehicle (HOV) tolled express lanes from U.S. 36 to 120th Avenue. However, more work needs to be done to ensure economic growth, the completion of the FasTracks line and plus, Hansen said, infrastructure is still needed throughout the county. “I think I’ve proven in the past I can get the job done,” he said. If re-elected, Hansen said he would like to continue to promote a Home Rule Charter that would replace some elected offices with hired staff and have the remaining offices be elected through non-partisan elections. Hansen has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Truman State University and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Denver. He was awarded the Gates Foundation Fellowship in 2011 to attend the Harvard Kennedy School’s State and Local Government Executive program. The commissioner serves as chair of the North Area Transportation Alliance and is a member of the several boards including the Adams County Economic Development and Front Range Airport Authority. Hansen lives in Thornton with his wife Holly and their two children.

Longmont decision not a surprise It was a “nice try” by the Longmont City Council, but “no cigar.” If you missed it, I am referring to the Boulder County District Court decision regarding the City of Longmont’s ban on oil and gas hydraulic fracturing in their city. Longmont voters had authorized a ban on all fracking in oil and gas wells in 2012. Legal speculation had the City’s home rule policy decision being trumped by State law all along. One can only speculate if the judge would have come down the same way if the Longmont policy had been less stringent than a total ban and had limited fracking operations such as setbacks from residential property and environmental considerations. The answer to that question may come from other pending litigation brought by the Colorado Oil and Gas Association against the City of Longmont.
Ballot campaigns will escalate
The Longmont decision certainly will give further fuel to “fan the flames” in the already heated petition drives by interests on both sides of the fracking issue. Unfortunately, Gov. John Hickenlooper’s efforts on a compromise piece of legislation seem to have failed and the battleground now moves to the November ballot box. This of course assumes that petitions for both pro and con positions are found to have sufficient valid signatures by the Secretary of State’s Office, which is highly likely. It has been reported that proponents and op-
and respected all the support Bob gave his wife Vi as she was a high profile person involved in Westminster and state government politics as an elected official. Peace be with you.
Running unopposed
ponents each have over 100,000 signatures on their respective petitions. State law requires 86,105 valid signatures to make the ballot. Stay tuned for this continuing saga.
Saying goodbye
This past Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church we said our goodbyes to a good friend, a longtime Westminster resident, a principled man who demonstrated a duty to provide community service in so many ways, a great family man and the biggest supporter of Vi June. Vi’s husband Bob June left this world for a better place on July 22. We remember his active involvement in the community and Westminster City governmental affairs including chairing and serving on the Westminster Transportation Commission, his being elected and serving on the Regional Transportation District Board of Directors, he and Vi starting the Westminster Progressive HOA and more. I especially remember
Congrats to RTD Board of Directors member Larry Hoy on being certified by the Secretary of State’s Office as the only candidate for the District J (basically Westminster area) seat in the November election. It is always a positive sign when an incumbent is not challenged with an opponent(s). It demonstrates that the incumbent is viewed as doing a good job in representing the constituents. I know for a fact that Larry takes the responsibility of the RTD board seat seriously and works hard at doing the work of a board member as he sees it. I would submit that he has demonstrated his leadership skills and respect among his peers within the RTD organization by the 1st vice chairman position he holds on the 15 member board of directors. Congrats Larry on being unopposed for your second 4-year term. Earlier in the year, there was speculation that former Mayor Nancy McNally would throw her hat in the ring for the RTD seat as some of her supporters encouraged her to run. Bill Christopher is a former Westminster city manager and RTD board member.

Don’t miss out on second chances In casual golf outings when we shank our first shot into the lake and reach back into our bag for another ball to tee it up one more time, we call that shot a mulligan. And many times that second ball is just as bad as the first; however, there are those times when that mulligan works out extremely well and puts us safely back in play. Many successful salespeople and thriving businesses have learned a long time ago that when a prospective customer says “no” to the offering or proposal, that “no” is only “no” for now, it is not a “no” forever. Early in my own selling career, I was told “no” by a prospect 12 times before they finally agreed to see me one
more time where that “no” finally turned into a “yes” as I made the sale. That is an extreme example, and as many of you who are in sales or in business have learned, if we do not take that second shot, “no” will always be “no.”
We can all probably think of a time where we let some words fly from our mouths without any filter or thought for what we were about to say or how we would say it. Now most people might think that there is absolutely no chance for a verbal mulligan, but how many relationships and friendships have been saved through heartfelt, apologetic, or encouraging and loving words? If we never take the time to seek that second chance, we will never have the opportunity to repair the relationships that matter most in our lives. Have you ever given someone a second chance? Have you yourself ever needed a second chance? My guess would be that
the answer to both questions would be yes. It’s what we do with those second chances that really matters. Typically, successful second chances include extra effort in thought and preparation. The mulligans in our lives have a much greater likelihood of reaching the green when we take the time to understand where things went wrong in the first place. Once we recognize the error, large or small, in our technique, tactics, or spoken words, we can adjust accordingly and are well on our way to success and happiness. Norton continues on Page 10
Family shares its gratitude in wake of tragedy My husband, Bob, passed away on July 22. I want to share his obituary today. As well, I wanted to share our family’s gratitude to Agape Hospice for taking such wonderful care of Bob in the last few days of his life. So many have reached out to us at the passing of Bob, and we want to say thank you for your caring and friendship.
Robert Bruce June Nov. 20, 1929 – July 22, 2014 Robert Bruce June was born in Jersey City, New Jersey on Nov. 20, 1929, “in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty.” He was one of two children, the other being his sister Shirley. He attended Dickenson High School and sang in the Trinity Methodist Church choir in New York City. He rode the subway into the city at Wall St. starting at age 9 to go to choir practices and performances. He sang in the choir until age 14. Bob had many interesting experiences including watching the German Dirigible, the Hindenburg crash in May 1937. He lived through the “total blackouts” every night during World War II to prevent enemy ships and submarines from knowing where they were. He participated in the celebration of the end of the war on VJ day
by climbing a street light pole in front of the Paramount Movie Theatre and shouting at the top of his lungs. With the start of the Korean War, Bob was inducted into the Air Force in February 1951. He did some training at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver and became an instructor teaching Airmen the missile guidance systems. While training in Denver, he learned to ski and fell in love with the West. While in Denver, Bob met his future wife and best friend, Viola Beste from Sauk Centre, Minnesota, in 1953 at an outdoor concert at Cheeseman Park. They were married in July 1954. Together they raised a family of six children. Just this past July 16, they celebrated their 60th anniversary. Hunting and fishing were lifelong enjoyments for Bob and baseball was a
passion. He rode in the Ride the Rockies bicycle events in 1992 and 1994 at the ages of 62 and 64. He loved dogs. Bob was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, served on the RTD Board of Directors, and was one of the founding members of the Westminster Progressive Homeowners Association where he served as director as well as every capacity throughout the last 30 years. Bob is survived by his wife Vi, five children: Karen Pilgrim (Mark), Nancy White (Bill), Mary June, Daniel June (Susie), Kate Crowley (Jim), Eight grandchildren: David Pilgrim, Emily Pilgrim, Ann White, Daniel White, Ryan June, Evan June, Dane June, Jessica Crowley; and two great grandchildren, Allyson Jaramillo and Kayla Jaramillo. He is preceded in death by his parents Lemuel and Mabel June, his sister Shirley, son Davey June, who died at 20 months old in 1958, and granddaughter Erin Crowley. Vi June is past Democratic state representative for House District 35. She is a former mayor of Westminster and a former newspaper publisher. A Westminster resident for more than four decades, she and her husband, Bob, have five grown children and eight grandchildren.

Now in professional golf, we all know there is no such thing as a mulligan. The professional golfer knows that if a mistake is made, he or she will pay the price through additional strokes. In life, we are penalized with missed opportunities if we say the wrong things or take wayward steps. However, in most cases we do have an opportunity to make things right as we capitalize on our second chances. Now maybe my example of being rejected 12 times before finally making that sale is an extreme case. However, in sales
just as in life, we need to recognize the importance of resilience and maintaining a positive attitude of perseverance. “No” today does not mean “no” tomorrow, and a harsh word spoken today does not mean it could not be forgiven tomorrow. How about you, are there situations or opportunities in your life where you could use a second chance or take a mulligan right about now? I would love to hear all about it at gotonorton@gmail.com. And when we make the most of our second chances, it really will be a better than good week. METRO AREA NEWS IN A HURRY DRCOG hires acting senior managing director
Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) Executive Director Jennifer Schaufele announces the appointment of Dr. Florine Raitano as acting senior managing director. Raitano previously served as DRCOG’s special projects manager where she has been involved with the organization’s Sustainable Communities Initiative grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and Metro Vision 2040 regional plan activities. In the new leadership position, Raitano will help make recommendations on long-range activities; become actively involved in all agency programs and services; identify opportunities to leverage cross-program strengths; develop stronger teams through feedback, coaching and mentoring; develop and maintain collaborative external relationships; and carry out the duties and responsibilities of the execu-
tive director in her absence. Twice elected mayor of Dillon, Raitano has extensive local government and public sector experience. She served as the first executive director of the Colorado Rural Development Council, a post she held for 10 years. In addition, she served as executive director of the I-70 Coalition from 2006-2010, and was appointed by Gov. Bill Ritter in 2007 to the Technical Advisory Committee for the Blue Ribbon Panel on Transportation Finance and Implementation. She recently completed work on several HUD Sustainable Communities projects in the New River Valley Region in Virginia and St. Charles Parish in Louisiana. She also worked with the North Fork Valley in Delta County to gain formal certification from Colorado Creative Industries, a division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade, as a full-fledged Creative District.

SALOME’S STARS FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 28, 2014
ARIES (Mar 21 to Apr 19) Your honesty is, as always, admirable. But you might want to be more tactful in discussing a sensitive issue with a family member. Remember: You can give advice without giving offense. TAURUS (Apr 20 to May 20) An unexpected workplace snag should be handled quickly and efficiently so that it leaves you time for family get-togethers. Also, you might soon get that long-sought apology. GEMINI (May 21 to Jun 20) Aspects favor family matters, especially where children might be involved. Spending time with loved ones helps restore some much-needed balance to your typically busy schedule.

GALLERY OF GAMES
CANCER (Jun 21 to Jul 22) That seemingly clear-cut agreement might not be quite so straightforward after all. Recheck for language that could make you liable for hidden costs and other unpleasant surprises. LEO (Jul 23 to Aug 22) Careful, Kitty. Better to deal with someone with proven reliability than with a big talker who promises much but can’t confirm that he or she will deliver. Your social life really zings this weekend. VIRGO (Aug 23 to Sept 22) Your matchmaking skills are at peak performance levels both in helping to staff workplace teams for upcoming projects and for bringing people together on a more personal basis. LIBRA (Sept 23 to Oct 22) You’re finally seeing some progress with your new venture. But be prepared for it to continue at a slower pace than you’re used to. Meanwhile, a loved one could be preparing a surprise. SCORPIO (Oct 23 to Nov 21) A family member’s success pulls you into the spotlight as well. Enjoy it, but don’t let it overshadow or otherwise obstruct what you’re doing with your own creative projects. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 to Dec 21) Using what you already know might not be quite enough to get a proposed project off the ground. Look for any new information that might help tilt the scales in your favor. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 to Jan 19) Good news: While a changing workplace environment can be daunting for some, it could be the challenge you’ve been hoping for. If so, confront it with confidence and move on. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 to Feb 18) It’s a good time to recheck travel arrangements for any changes that could work to your advantage. Aspects also favor strengthening and restoring old, fraying relationships. PISCES (Feb 19 to Mar 20) Using your intuitive reasoning helps you cut right through the double-talk and go straight to what’s really going on around you. Stay the course until all your questions are answered. BORN THIS WEEK: You radiate light and warmth, and others love being close to you. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Bartender mixes it up with best Sean Kenyon, bartender extraordinaire at Williams & Graham, was named American Bartender of the Year at the Spirited Awards July 19 in the Sheraton Hotel New Orleans. Kenyon was among four finalists along with Jeff Bell (PDT, New York), Marcovaldo Dionysos (Smuggler’s Cove, San Francisco), and Bobby Heugel (Anvil Bar & Refuge, Houston). The Spirited Awards are held each year during Tales of the Cocktail, the world’s premier cocktail festival, bringing together the international spirits community for five days of what’s now, what’s new and what’s next in bartending. “I am still stunned by the whole thing,” Kenyon told Eater Denver. “I didn’t think I was going to win. Someone from a secondary market doesn’t have as much of a chance to win as much as people from the coasts, and with the guys from New York and San Francisco in the running, I just didn’t expect to win.” According to Eater Denver, Robert Simonson, author and journalist for The New York Times, tweeted this after Kenyon’s win: “Jul 19 #spiritedawards win for @ SeanKenyon likely to be biggest thing yet to happen to Denver cocktail scene, attention-wise. #totc” What did Kenyon say in his acceptance speech? “I thanked my wife — I couldn’t do anything I do without her. I thanked my family at Williams & Graham — I love them. I thanked Steve Olson and Andy Seymour, two of my mentors. And I thanked my father; he never sat me down to tell me what to do, but I learned everything I know about bartending and hospitality from him. I prepared nothing for my speech because I am superstitious, but I ended with a call to young bartenders everywhere: Honor yourself, honor your peers, and honor your craft.”
Cities host outdoor films By Clarke Reader
creader@colorado communitymedia.com Summer is the time to be outdoors, to relax with friends and family and enjoy the best panoramas nature has to offer. With drive-in theaters all but faded into cultural memory, cities have been picking up the torch and offering residents free ways to catch some favorite films while enjoying the summer weather. Arvada, Golden and Westminster all have free outdoor movie events planned for August’s Fridays, offering the perfect way to enjoy the tail end of the season. Arvada’s Flicks in the Square,
located at Olde Town Square, Olde Wadsworth Boulevard and 56th Ave., kicks off on Aug. 1 with The Goonies and runs every Friday through Aug. 29. Golden’s Movies and Music in the Park, located at Parfet Park, 10th St. and Washington Ave., starts with the classic The Wizard of Oz on Aug. 1, and runs through Aug. 22 Wesminster’s Movie in the Park, located at Westminster Center Park, 4801 W. 92nd Ave., will be showing The Lego Movie on Aug. 15. “This is something we’ve been doing for the past several years and our residents love it,” said Karen Miller, president of the Historic Olde Town Arvada organization. “We’ve got a really good series this year.”
Miller said that each movie has a specific business sponsor, who helps make sure things go smoothly during the evening and helps pick activities to do before the film starts, which is at dusk. “Crowds start showing up early so we’ve been working with Healthy Places Arvada to bring some physical activities to the events,” she said. “For Akeelah we’re going to have a kind of informal spelling bee and we’ve got a whole bunch of 60’s style activities during the week of Hairspray.” Golden’s Movies & Music features local bands, from Flock of Beagles and Face to Mass Hipsteria

hile running in the same social circles, Chris Hill and Josh Van Riper found they had one thing in common — beer. Both Hill and Van Riper enjoyed craft beer and home brewing enough to begin working on their shared hobby together, not knowing they would become business partners later in life. “My social circles meshed with Josh, who was already home brewing,” Hill said. “We started to brew together every Wednesday, and we just got into it.” Formerly in the marketing and manufacturing industries, the pair understood the business practices to owning and running a businesses, but lacked passion for their respective careers. They instead found passion in hobbies, including traveling, outdoor recreation and beer. “I’d been in manufacturing for a long time, and at different times run other companies or had my own companies,” Van Riper said. “When I was looking for a new course correction in my career, I thought, `What could I do with my interests and my background that isn’t too scary?’ — I’ve been brewing for around 20 years now, and I thought, I could do that.” The two have been friends for more than 20 years. Hill worked in several bars up in Fort Collins, and often talked of opening a brewery with Van Riper. However Van Riper had already tried a career change, and attempted to launch a brewery with a different friend in a deal that would eventually fall through. Later, over a dinner with their wives, the pair discussed the idea again, and decided to open a brewery – finding the time was right. “It was on and off and on again, and now we’ve never left the on again stage,” Van Riper said. “It was an easy sale for me. Let’s brew beer, it’s fun! Who doesn’t like that?” The pair are now the co-owners and brewers of Odyssey Beerwerks, a microbrewery in Arvada. Opened in May 2013, the microbrewery, 5535 W. 56th Ave. No. 107, has swiftly grown in both in popularity and size. Recently doubling capacity, the brewery regularly produces 120 barrels, or 3,720 gallons of beer in six fermenters. Located next to the brewery is a large taproom, giving the duo the opportunity to mix what they enjoy best: people and beer. “We love the taproom side,” Hill said. “From the area, Yak and Yeti is a brewpub, they focus on Brews continues on Page 23

SPORTS Golden native Howes completes Tour de France
20 Westminster Window
July 31, 2014
Howes is a young star in the world of professional cycling By Daniel Williams
dwilliams@colorado communitymedia.com GOLDEN - Everyone knows how to ride a bike but no one rides one like Alex Howes. Actually that’s not true. There are a few — but just a few — more cyclists in the world who can ride like Howes, but only because he is one of the elite cyclists in the world. The Golden native and 2006 Golden High School native just wrapped up participating in his first Tour de France, one of the world’s biggest sporting events. Howes was one of just nine American cyclists in the race and was selected from his Garmin-Sharp team who earned the right to participate “The Tour.” To be selected is one thing to actually finish the grueling and even dangerous race is another. The Tour de France consist of 21 day-long segments (stages) over a 23day period and cover around 2,200 miles of mountain. Dozens of top riders fail to finish the race each year, succumbing to crashes, illness and fatigue. “It is something that Alex has worked very hard for,” said Alex’s mother Star Howes. “It has taken him a lot of dedication and
Golden native and 2006 Golden High School graduate Alex Howes just wrapped up competing in his first Tour de France for his Garmin team Sunday in France. Howes has turned into one of the elite cyclists in the world. Photo courtesy of Star Howes discipline to get to this point.” The 26-year-old University of Colorado graduate found out just one week before the start of the 101st Tour de France that he was selected as one of 26 world class riders from his Garmin-Sharp team. Howes said in a pre-race interview that he was nervous and excited as he braced himself for his first Tour de France experience.
“It’s nerve-wracking and it’s exciting. It’s one of those things where, in a way, it’s just like any other bike race but the difference is all your buddies back home, your parents and your family and your grandma and whoever else, they’re actually going to read about you racing a bike for the first time,” Howes said in an interview with Velo News. Howes successfully completed his first Tour de France, and he hopes that his Tour
experience will be the first of many but in a super-competitive global sport like cycling opportunities like he had are rare. And the humble Howes expressed that in several pre-race interviews, saying that he was going to soak up the once in a lifetime experience. And it is fitting that Howes mentioned his family in those interviews because he may owe some of his success to his other team back in Colorado. Howes mother said that he came from a family that made cycling a “lifestyle,” and his father is a very solid amateur rider. However, Howes is already also a global star, having super-fans all over the world including France and Japan. Howes resides in Boulder half the time and he lives in Girona, Spain, the other half, as he trains year around. Besides being selected to participate in his first Tour de France, Howes has already accomplished a lot in the professional cycling world. Howes riding resumé includes a first place finish (stage 2) at the 2012 Tour of Utah, a sixth place finish at the 2012 De Brabantse Pijl, a fourth place finish at the 2011 Tour de Beauce, a first place finish at the 2009 U23 Nationals Road Race and a first place finish at the 2009 U23 Nationals Criterium. Vincenzo Nibali was the winner of the 101st Tour de France, as he led for 18 days out of the 21 days.
Broncos no longer Super Bowl favorites Most everyone in Colorado and many in the Rocky Mountain region believe the Denver Broncos are on the cusp of winning a Super Bowl. But as the 2014 NFL season approaches it is interesting to hear what others around the country think about Denver’s Super Bowl chances this season. While the Broncos were the majority pick to win a world championship of analysts and experts going into last season, this season is different. Despite the Broncos spending $120 million in free agency during the offseason to upgrade their defense, nationally they are not getting the same kind of love that they did last season. Perhaps the fact that no team in NFL history has ever lost a Super Bowl and then went on to go back and win it the next year is in play. Or perhaps the very ugly way that 43-8 game played out has scared folks away from picking the Broncos again.
Example: “Sports Illustrated’s” Peter King has Denver as the No. 6 ranked team going into this season. His reason: “Having a hard time getting That Game out of my head.” King is right, the Super Bowl was an absolute disaster of epic proportions. But the Broncos also beat themselves in that game. It will be interesting to see what plays out when the two teams meet again early in the regular season. ProFootballTalk.com has the Broncos ranked No. 3 going into the season,
but they don’t necessarily love Denver’s chances either saying: “Last year the Broncos’ most significant weakness was their pass defense, which is why the pass defense was the top priority in free agency. Can DeMarcus Ware, Aqib Talib and T.J. Ward turn that pass defense into a strength?” That is a good question. But you have to give credit for the team addressing its defensive issues and besides adding several new starts through free agency, they also added cornerback Bradley Roby with its first round draft pick. Moreover, when it is all said and done the Broncos could have five new starters on their defense. However, others still like Denver’s chances this season, such as CBSSports. com senior writer Pete Prisco. Prisco picked the Broncos as his No. 2 team going into 2014 saying: “They have added a lot of good players, but are also getting back some of the injured ones from last
season — Ryan Clady, Von Miller and Chris Harris among them.” And Prisco has a good point. Peyton Manning was so good last season that he covered up a lot of holes that were made from a lot of missing injured players. And while the Broncos were still good enough to make a run to the Super Bowl all of those missing players caught up with Denver. In addition, Las Vegas still loves the Broncos, who along with the Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks remain a 5-1 favorite to win it all in 2014. While the Broncos window to win it all may be closing, John Elway still has it propped open and whether they get it done in 2014 or not, the team did a ton this offseason to try and close the gap that was 43-8. Perhaps the experts not picking the Broncos in 2014 is exactly what this team needs.
IKEA-Mile High Sports hold back-to-school Olympiad 10 boys and girls teams compete By Daniel Williams
dwilliams@colorado communitymedia.com CENTENNIAL – IKEA is commonly known for a few different things. It is known for its huge selection of affordable put-it-together-yourself household items like shelves, desks and storage units. It is also known for the massive sign off Interstate 25 and County Line Road. And lastly, it has spectacular Swedish meatballs. Well now IKEA is earning a new reputation as a brand who gives back to the community. IKEA paired up with Mile High Sports to produce the inaugural Back-toSchool Olympiad Wednesday outside of IKEA’s massive facility. The event pitted 10 different high schools teams together to compete against each other in eight skill based events. Five boys teams — Dakota Ridge Football, Smoky Hill Boys Soccer, Kent Denver Boys Basketball, Holy Family Football and Cherry Creek Boys Soccer — competed
against each other and against five girls teams: KIPP Denver Collegiate Dance, D’Evelyn Volleyball, Rock Canyon Softball, Rampart Volleyball and Dakota Ridge Volleyball. Smoky Hill boys’ soccer and D’Evelyn volleyball were the winners and each team was awarded $500 that will go to their schools, courtesy of IKEA. “The event was a giant success but only because all of the teams came out and competed for their schools,” said Doug Ottewill of Mile High Sports. The 10 teams competed in eight different events including basketball, a football toss into buggies, a volleyball serving event, a hit targets with a soccer ball event, a chipping and putting golf challenge, an egg toss, a scavenger hunt and finally a bookshelf building event where the teams had to properly assemble a bookshelf. “Every team who showed up today was awesome and we hope we can make this a huge annual event,” said Megan Thompson, IKEA marketing specialist who helped put on the event. But if you didn’t have a chance to compete there is still a way you can help your school. Stop by the IKEA store in Centennial any time between now and Sept. 15, and fill out a ballot for your school. The

and Dr. Harlan’s Amazing Bluegrass Tonic. “We started with just movies in 2002 and expanded to include music in 2005,” said Karlyn Tilley, communications manager with the city. “We make sure everything is family friendly, from the bands to the films we’re showing.” One of the things Golden has really expanded in recent years is bringing food trucks to the events. This year the events will feature the Cilantro Truck, Quiero Arepas, South Philly Cheese Steaks and Sweetwater Farms Ice Cream. “We look for different kinds of food for people and we have popcorn, of course,” Tilley said. “If visitors want to bring their own food, they are more than welcome.” Attendees at all three events are invited to bring their own chairs, blanks and pillows to make themselves comfortable, but these events are wildly popular so be sure to get there early. “We get people in the spring asking about what movies we’re going to be showing,” said Miller. For Tilley, and all involved, these events are a chance to celebrate with the community. “It’s something more we can do for our community,” she said. “We’re really excited for this season — we’ve got some great bands and movies.” And for even more outdoors movie fun, with a side of music, there’s always Red Rock’s popular Film on the Rocks series. The program continues to the end of the summer, with Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
