WHAT’S THE LATEST UPDATE ON THE DISTRICT 1 DIRECTOR ELECTION?

On Saturday, May 13, Mountain Parks Electric announced the following results of the District 1 Director Election:

• Ryan Zorn: 217 votes (34.7%)

• Joe Smyth: 189 votes (30.2%)

• Phillip Archer: 116 votes (18.6%)

• Christine Larkin: 103 votes (16.5%)

Since no candidate won a majority of the votes, MPE’s Contested Election Policy (D8, Section III, Part L) requires a runoff election of the top two candidates, per the following:

“Pursuant to Article III., Section 4(d) of the MPEI Bylaws, to be elected, a candidate must receive a majority of all valid votes cast for the contested district. If no candidate receives a majority of all valid votes cast for the contested district, then MPEI shall conduct a runoff election of the two candidates receiving the most votes from the initial ballot. Members may vote for a candidate in the runoff election by mail or in person at a special meeting called for the purpose of holding the runoff election. Said special meeting shall be held not later than ninety (90) days after the annual meeting. If there is a tie vote resulting in exactly 50% of the votes being cast for one candidate and 50% for another candidate, the winner will be determined by coin flip. The coin flip shall be conducted by a member of the Election Supervisory Committee in the presence of both candidates or their designated representative.”

In compliance with this policy, MPE has scheduled a continuation of the May 13 meeting for August 10 (notice included on page 7 of this issue of CCL magazine). The purpose of the meeting is to determine the winner of the District 1 Election. Eligible District 1 members (i.e., voters) should begin receiving runoff election ballots in the mail the first week of July.

Only Ryan Zorn and Joe Smyth, the two candidates who received the most votes at the May 13 meeting, will be listed on the runoff election ballot.

Until the runoff winner is determined, incumbent director Kristen Taddonio will continue representing District 1.
