hen a tire goes fast enough through water, to the point where it can no longer move the water around or through the tread of the tire, it will rise up and ride on the surface of the water, and will no longer be in contact with the ground. That is by definition ‘hydroplaning’. When that occurs directional control is affected. It can be as small as a splash where the car stays pointed in the same direction, almost imperceptible, up to violent veering sideways resulting in a spin and a crash.

Preventing hydroplaning is easy. Look ahead, read the road, and when you see standing water…wait for it…Slow Down. Find out how fast the car thinks is too fast, and remember, it is not about how fast we feel is safe, it is all about the car. If you slow down enough in advance to ask the car nicely how fast you can go, it will tell you politely and in a way that is predictable, safe, and non threatening. Also important is to not skimp on tires. When they get low on tread, replace them… all of them.

and MRA

If you prefer to learn by trial and terror, recovering from an acute hydroplaning slide is not so easy. Step one is to do less of whatever caused the slide. If you were on the brakes, less brakes; if you were on the gas, less gas…gradually. Here is the harder part, steer in the direction you want to go and look in that direction. If the car is veering violently your steering must be quick and accurate: hand over hand… wax on / wax off, back to center position on the wheel. If it is an easy one and your hands are positioned at 9 & 3, just make a quick small movement of the wheel, and accident avoided.

Do these things, and for a moment, all will be right with the world.

Cars in Movies

The big screen has seen its share of movies featuring cars as one of the stars. In some, the car was the feature, while others had vehicles central to the plot. Some of those cars have become iconic to auto enthusiasts: Back to the Future (1985) – Marty McFly is a typical 80’s high school student with a dysfunctional family. His best friend is a mad scientist who has built a time machine in a 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 that’s powered by plutonium. Marty travels back in time to 1955 and has to make sure his parents get married. Unfortunately, the car in Back to the Future is the only 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 with a time machine but around 9,200 of these sports cars were produced. It has gull-wing doors, a rear-mounted engine, and 130 horsepower. Dukes of Hazzard (2005) – This movie remake of the classic 1979 T.V. show features three cousins, Bo, Luke, and Daisy, helping their Uncle Jesse run moonshine in Bo’s orange 1968 Dodge Charger, named General Lee. The local county commissioner evicts them from their farm while plotting to turn the area in to a coal mine. Bo and Luke set off to their beloved farm and save the area from the commissioner’s plan. Over 90,000 1968 Dodge Chargers were produced. It had an optional Magnum engine but its original Hemi engine with 425 horsepower was popular with drag racers and car enthusiasts. Its curvy body, smooth tail, hidden headlight grill, and tendency to look good in racing stripes make it a racing fan’s dream muscle car. Christine (1983) - This classic 1980’s horror film was based on a novel by the thriller author, Stephen King. Nerdy high school student, Arnie Cunningham, falls in love with a 1958 Plymouth Fury named Christine. He fixes her up, gives her a beautiful cherry red paint job, and goes along for the ride as Christine begins to take revenge on anyone who messes with her or Arnie. Christine was based on a unique car. Less than 5,500 1958 Plymouth Furys were ever made. The Fury was only available in one color and body style. Buyers had their choice of engine; either a 290hp 318ci Dual Fury V-800 or a 305hp 350ci Golden Commando V8. Smokey and the Bandit (1977) – Bo Darville, nicknamed Bandit, is hired to bring illegal beer from Texas for a party. With the help of his friend Cledus, a truck driver, they try to make their deadline. Bandit’s 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am becomes a central character in the movie, as the adventure unfolds. Almost 70,000 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Ams were produced after Smokey and the Bandit premiered. America instantly fell in love with its pointed nose, square headlights, and newly covered custom fabric seats.

H e r b i e – Herbie is a 1963 Vo l k s w a g e n Beetle Sunroof Sedan with a mind of his own. Affectionately called the Love Bug for his tendency to fall in love with other cars, Herbie can be recognized by his racing number 53. 1963 Volkswagen Beetles had 40 horsepower, plenty of luggage space, an automatic windshield washing system, and upgraded heating system, window guides, muffler, and heat exchanger. This model is still popular with VW enthusiasts. Cars (2006) – This movie, adored by children and adults alike, features a popular racecar named Lightning McQueen who gets caught in a small, off-the-map town called Radiator Springs. While there, he becomes friends with a rusty pick-up truck named Mater, a Porsche named Sally, and a Hudson Hornet named Doc Hudson. The Hudson Hornet was produced in 1951-1954 and ruled the race track until 1955. It was built with extra steel reinforcing the body and sleek lines to make it more aerodynamic. With its low center-of-gravity, it was the best handling car of its time. Bullitt (1968) – Police Lieutenant Frank Bullitt is in charge of watching a man in the Witness Protection Program for 48 hours. When the witness gets shot in the middle of the night, Frank vows revenge on the shooter and the Mafia boss who hired him. During the famous car chase scene in Bullitt, Frank Bullitt is driving a 1968 Ford Mustang. This muscle car has 230 horsepower, front power disc brakes, and features like front and rear marking lights and energy absorbing steering column. FinancingYour Vehicle Purchase This multi-part series will take you step-by-step through the process of purchasing your next car; from researching the right vehicle for you to taking care of your investment. This month we will discuss the best ways to finance your vehicle purchase. any vehicle buyers enter M a dealership’s lot and unknowingly spend far more

than they need to. The reason: With the exception of a vehicle with exorbitant repair costs, no other factor affects the entire cost of ownership more than financing. Most consumers spend hours researching their next vehicle, locating a dealership, test driving, and purchasing, with little or no research into financing options. Except for the purchases of a house or higher education, a vehicle may be the most expensive product consumers purchase. Dealerships have made financing a ridiculously simple process: Walk in, sign, drive a w a y. A s a r e s u l t , m a n y buyers are conditioned to operate within dealerships’ financing processes. However, other options exist and could potentially save thousands of dollars.

pay; 48-month term; 20-percent down payment. The next step is to obtain a credit report which is easily accomplished at websites such as annualcreditreport. com. A small fee is required for obtaining credit scores (what most lenders use); but knowing that score, and anything affecting the score, will provide consumers with invaluable leverage. Interest rates are tied to these scores, thus if negotiating a rate, knowing the score (or how to fix anything affecting it) will prove beneficial. Finally, visit manufacturer websites and local dealer association websites to research current rebates, financing offers, and incentives.

Steps to Take Prior to Shopping for Financing

First Party Lenders First party lenders are sources with which consumers have an ongoing relationship, and with which consumers can work directly. These include buyers’ banks, credit unions, or other local financial institutions. Take a recently obtained credit report and score when meeting with a first party lender. They will request another from the agencies for verification, but these documents provide a loan officer with preliminary information from which they can predict interest rates and loan amounts. Every credit report inquiry can reduce the total score, thus having the document in advance of lender verification will reduce the chance of needing to obtain multiple scores through multiple lenders.

Buyers should know exactly how much they should pay for a vehicle. Sources like cars.com, kbb.com, and edmunds.com offer online tools to determine how much a vehicle will cost to finance. However, these tools won’t determine how much a buyer can reasonably afford. Financial advisors suggest the 20-48-20 rule: payments should not exceed 20-percent of net

Second Party Lenders Second par ty lenders are sources with which a consumer can work directly but with which they do not have an existing relationship. Consumers can seek financing either in person, if from a local lender, or online. Many large automotive sites like edmunds.com and cars.com will offer financing applications through reputable lenders.

8 / JUNE 2013 / COLORADOMOTORWORLDMAGAZINE

Third Party Lenders Third party lenders are those lenders with which buyers do not directly communicate. Financing through a dealership usually involves financing through the Finance and Insurance Department (F&I). In this scenario, the F&I Manager obtains buyer financing, usually through second party lenders. While the most simple and least time consuming option, this could also be the most expensive. Having a credit score prior to financing will help the F&I manager determine the potential loan rate and amount prior to seeking a lender. Dealerships (and its employees) earn commissions on financing contracts and the F&I department is one of a dealer’s biggest profit sources. The higher the rate and amount, the more commission they make. Sometimes F&I managers will mark-up an interest rate in order to make more profit. Having a pre-approved loan will help ensure that the dealership offers competitive options. Try to buy a vehicle MondayThursday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., unless the day is a holiday. Most lenders are closed Saturday, holidays, and evenings, which means that buyers risk not finalizing the financing prior to taking the vehicle home. Knowing where to go for financing, and which offers best fit personal needs, will save time, money, and lead to a better ownership experience. Obtain credit reports and scores, then shop around for financing options. Just like a new vehicle, financing is a product; shopping around will lead to the best possible purchase. NEXT MONTH: At the Dealership
