This past Sunday, May 21, 2017 I had the opportunity to attend the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame Induction ceremony. In addition to the induction MJ Mastalir, the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado was honored with the Distinguished Serve Award. A combined effort of the Colorado Golf Association and the Colorado PGA with the Colorado Women’s Golf Association serving as a contributing partner, the JGAC proved a big success in its inaugural year.

The IVY Pro Am was recently held at Cheyenne Shadows Golf Course and the event was yet again a highlight of our year. This event continues to be an incredible way for us to give back to those that have served or are currently serving our country. If you have made the trip down to be a part of this event, thank you for your time and dedication! If you haven’t had a chance, I can’t encourage you enough to be a part of the event next year!

Congratulations to all of the recipients including 2017 John Cox recipient Zach Troyer. Additionally, we were thrilled to announce that all of the candidates that qualified for the National Scholarships but did not earn one were awarded Colorado PGA REACH Foundation scholarships. It has been the policy of your Colorado PGA REACH Foundation to award scholarships to all candidates as long as they are qualifiers for the national scholarship.

CoBank Colorado Senior Open I always enjoy watching the leaderboard at the CoBank Colorado Senior Open as it seems out PGA Professionals always make their way to the top of the leaderboard. A special congratulation goes to Rick Cole, PGA Head Professional at Eaton Country Club for representing all of our PGA Professionals and earning the honor of being the best finishing Colorado PGA Professional. Of the 39 members and apprentices that competed in the event, 18 made the 36-hole cut and earned prize money for their finish. Northern Represents in Senior PGA Championship While watching our own members compete in our senior state open is fun, watching one of my fellow Colorado Springs Professionals compete in the Senior PGA Championship may be even more special! I want to recognize PGA Life Member Mike Northern for representing all of us Colorado PGA Professionals as he competed in the most prestigious Senior Major Championship at Trump National D.C. While he missed the cut, Mike made all of us proud! There’s a lot of great information in this month’s issue of Pro Peaks. Be sure to take a couple minutes to check it all out. Thanks for Honoring Our Vets & Are You Hooked On Your Phone? By Eddie Ainsworth, PGA

My Fellow Colorado PGA Professionals, Wednesday, May 24, was another great day at Fort Carson for our Annual IVY Pro Am. In 2017, the 4th Infantry Division is celebrating its 100th Anniversary making it indeed a privilege to honor and play with our Veterans. If it has been a few years since you have played Cheyenne Shadows Golf Course, you should make a trip down to Colorado Springs to do so. Thanks to the leadership of our PGA professional staff that serves our Soldiers and families at Fort Carson and the support of General Ryan Gonsalves, the course is in the best shape I have seen it in during my 20 years of living in Colorado Springs. They have done quite a bit of work to continually provide an outstanding recreational facility to our Veterans and they are turning Cheyenne Shadows into something special. I would like to extend my personal thanks to all of you who attended and supported this year’s event. If you have never had the privilege of participating in this event, I would encourage you to put it on your schedule for 2018. I promise it will be an experience you won’t soon forget. Several years ago for my wife’s birthday, I gave her a different kind of gift. It was the gift of 100 percent of my time. Upon arriving home on Friday night, I turned my cell phone off and handed it to my wife knowing I would not get it back until Monday morning. Sometimes the gift of our time is the most important thing we can give people. What I learned that weekend was that I was addicted to my phone. There were times during the first 24 hours that I felt like my phone was vibrating in my pocket; and I didn’t even have it on me. A very dear friend of mine and one of my mentors recently sent me a 60 Minutes piece called “Hooked on Your Cell Phone.” I have linked it here and would strongly encourage you to view it - www. cbsnews.com/news/hooked-on-phones. That Monday when I received my phone back, I noticed that I had missed a few phone calls, text messages and emails. Funny thing, though, was my world did not crumble, no emergencies presented themselves and people were fine when I got back to them that Monday. A friend called me Monday morning before I had a chance to return his call and commented, “Wow, I could never do that.”

I know its summer time, the Golf Season is now in full swing and we are all extremely busy. PGA Disaster Relief Fund, Senior PGA Championship, PGA Professional Championship By Kyle Heyen, PGA PGA Disaster Relief Fund The PGA Disaster Relief Fund was created to provide assistance to PGA Members who find themselves faced with temporary financial problems, due to medical emergencies or natural disasters, such as flooding or storms. The fund is supported exclusively by donations from PGA Professionals, as due to tax regulations, the Association is not able to provide such a direct financial benefit to a Member. This program was implemented in July 2000, so no pre-existing conditions prior to then can be considered. During annual dues billing, PGA Members and apprentices make voluntary contributions to PGA Disaster Relief. In FY 2015/2016, roughly 11,000 Members and apprentices donated to this fund. KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship Congratulations to Mike Northern for representing the Colorado PGA Section at the recent KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship.

Our Champion Bernhard Langer became the first

golfer to win all five senior majors. He now holds nine senior major wins, eclipsing Jack Nicklaus. Jim Estes, of Germantown, Maryland, the former Tour professional turned nationally-recognized instructor for our nation’s Veterans, completed a steady 2-under-par 70 Sunday, securing Low Club Professional honors in the 78th KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Trump National Golf Club – Washington, D.C. Estes, 52, last competed on Tour in 2000, and became co-founder of the Salute Military Golf Association (SMGA). He finished with a 72-hole total of 2-overpar 290, to head a group of five senior PGA Club Professionals making the cut in the 156-player field. Mark Brown, of Oyster Bay, New York, was a stroke back at 291, after a 73, while Rick Schuller of Chester, Virginia, who was deadlocked with Estes going into the 18th hole, suffered a triple-bogey 8, to finish with a 76 and 293. Jeff Roth (77) of Farmington, New Mexico finished at 298; and Lee Houtteman (78) of Glen Arbor, Michigan, came in at 304. PGA Professional Championship Sunriver Resort – Bend, Oregon The PGA Professional Championship returns to Sunriver Resort, one of the country’s most scenic golf destinations, featuring acclaimed Crosswater Club. It will host the 50th PGA Professional National Championship presented by Club Car, Mercedes-Benz and OMEGA, June 18-21. It should also be noted that leading into the Championship, myself and the rest of your Board of Directors will gather for a two-day meeting. During this time, amongst other things, we will review and approve the fiscal year budget ahead, to ensure it aligns with our two-fold mission of serving the Member and growing the game. This will be the fourth visit to Oregon for the PGA of America’s showcase event for PGA Professionals. Rich Berberian is our defending champion. Good luck to Geoff Keefer, Mike Northern, Ari Papadopoulos, Blake Sharamitaro, Dale Smigelsky and Kirk Trowbridge, who will represent the Colorado PGA Section at the PGA Professional Championship.

The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship will be held June 29-July 2, at Olympia Fields (Illinois) Country Club. Brooke Henderson is the defending champion. KPMG also announced that an impressive lineup of highly-accomplished leaders in the worlds of business, sports, politics and media will attend the KPMG Women’s Leadership Summit that week. This will include keynotes by the 66th U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and IBM Chairman, President and CEO Ginni Rometty, who will both be on-hand to inspire the next generation of women leaders. 2017 PGA of America Scholarship Winners Announced Eight Awarded from Colorado PGA

he PGA of America recently announced its 2017 PGA Scholarship winners and we’re thrilled to announce that eight Colorado PGA member-affiliated students were selected to receive scholarships just one year after only one Colorado PGA member affiliated student earned the scholarship. The PGA Financial Assistance Fund Scholarship Program was established in 1986 to provide college scholarships for graduating high school seniors and college students who are the children or grandchildren of a PGA member. The group is highlighted by Zach Troyer, son of CommonGround Golf Course Head Professional Dave Troyer, is the recipient of a John Cox Scholarship. Receiving a PGA of America scholarship for the second year in a row is Marshall Hough, son of PGA Life Member Hank Hough. Of the 15 applicants this year, two winners from the high school category and six from the college category, with Colorado PGA Section affiliations, were granted scholarship funding. All winning candidates who were awarded the National Scholarship earned $2,000 while the John Cox Scholarship award winner earned $5,000.

Richerson to Attend Colorado PGA Fall Membership Meeting PGA

Secretary Jim Richerson will be included as a featured guest at the upcoming Fall Membership Meeting, set for Monday, October 16, 2017 at Heritage Eagle Bend Golf and Country Club. “We’re extremely excited to have Secretary Richerson join us for the upcoming Fall Membership Meeting,” noted Colorado PGA President Ty Thompson, PGA. “He will only add to the great lineup we have put together including our featured Fireside Chat with one of my mentors and longtime Cherry Hills Country Club Head Professional, Clayton Cole.” Richerson is the PGA General Manager and Group Director of Golf for Kohler Company in Kohler, Wisconsin. He was elected at the 2016 PGA Annual Meeting, when he became the first Wisconsin PGA Member to be elected as an Officer of the Association.

Elected to PGA Membership in 1995, Richerson spent the first 18 years of his career affiliated with the Marriott & RitzCarlton Hotel & Golf Corporation, holding various executive and management positions at golf properties in Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, California, Arizona and Missouri.

During Richerson’s term as a District 6 Director, he served as chair of the National Properties Committee; as a member of the National Budget and National Investment Committees; and continues as a PGA.com Advisory Board member. He was recipient of the 2013 and 2016 Wisconsin PGA Golf Professional of the Year, and the Section’s 2011 Horton Smith Award and 2012 Bill Strausbaugh Award. Prior to joining Kohler Company, Richersonserved as the Senior Director of PGA Golf Properties for the PGA of America based in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Richerson has served an integral role for Kohler Properties in conducting major golf championships. He was an Executive Committee Member of the 2007 U.S. Senior Open; the 2010 PGA Championship; the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open, where he also was General Chair; and the 2015 PGA Championship. In addition to his PGA and Kohler Company duties, Richerson has been active in community service, promoting and fundraising for charitable organizations in Wisconsin including the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Sheboygan Children’s Museum, Bookworm Gardens for Children, and United Way and Harvest for the Hungry events. Colorado PGA REACH Foundation Scholarships Announced Seven Earn Scholarships

A week after the PGA of America announced their 2017 PGA Scholarship winners, our Colorado PGA REACH Foundation would like to announce that seven candidates of earned local scholarships. Two students earned Marion Pfluger Scholarships while five students earned Colorado PGA REACH Scholarships. Of the 15 applicants this year, eight earned PGA of America Scholarships and seven earned Colorado PGA REACH Scholarships. One winner from college and one from the high school category earned the Marion Pfluger Scholarship. The scholarship is named in honor of longtime Pinehurst Country Club Head Professional Marion Pfluger, a past president of the Colorado PGA and a 1996 Inductee into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame. All winning candidates who were awarded the Marion Pfliger Scholarships earned $1,500 while the Colorado PGA REACH recipients earned $1,000. Post/Grady Team Up for Myran Craig Pro-Pro Title R

emington Post and Pat Grady have known each other for nearly two decades as they competed together in what was then the Colorado Junior Golf Association (CJGA). The duo relied on that history when they partnered together to win the 2017 Myran Craig Pro-Pro Championship presented by the PGA Tour and Jani-King. In the opening Four-Ball Stroke Play portion of the tournament, the pair distanced themselves from the field by posting two eagles and seven birdies in amassing 44 points in the modified stableford event. They kept the peddle to the metal during the second round as they added 20 points in the foursome stroke play portion to finish with a total of 64 points.

In second place was the team of Legacy Ridge Golf Course Head Professional Joe Carlton and Meadow Hills Golf Course Assistant Professional Caine Fitzgerald. PGA to Conduct PGA Championship, KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club T

he PGA of America announced today that it will host two different major championships at Southern Hills Country Club, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, between now and 2030. Southern Hills will host the 2021 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship—the most historic and prestigious major championship in senior golf—and also will be the venue for a PGA Championship no later than 2030. This will be a record fifth time that Southern Hills has staged the PGA Championship, one of golf’s four men’s major championships. In 2021, the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, the most historic event in senior golf, will make its second visit to Oklahoma as it debuts at Southern Hills. Founded in 1936, Southern Hills has hosted seven previous major championships, beginning with the 1958 U.S. Open won by Tommy Bolt through Tiger Woods’ PGA Championship triumph in 2007, when he captured the Wanamaker Trophy for a fourth time. Southern Hills also hosted the 1970 PGA Championship (won by Dave Stockton), 1977 U.S. Open (Hubert Green), 1982 PGA Championship (Raymond Floyd), 1994 PGA Championship (Nick Price) and 2001 U.S. Open (Retief Goosen).

“Few American golf venues match the legacy and record of excellence of Southern Hills Country Club,” said PGA of America President Paul Levy. “Some of our sport’s greatest names have walked these fairways and etched their name in major championship history. Smigelsky Punches Ticket to First US Senior Open D

ale Smigelsky has been on a roll lately. His hot play culminated with the Collindale Golf Course Director of Golf punching his card to the 2017 US Senior Open during qualifying on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the Meadows Golf Course in Littleton, CO. Smigelsky, fresh off a top-10 finish at the CoBank Colorado Senior Open and a first place finish at the Ft. Collins Country Club Pro Am in mid-May, posted a four-under-par 68 to share medalist honors. Smigelsky posted six birdies and just two bogeys, including a closing four-under-par 32 to finish tied for first with two-time US Amateur Public Links Champion Billy Tuten of Sugar Land, Texas. Charlie Post of Castle Rock finished as the first alternate after posting a 69. Victor Minovich of Littleton, CO fired a 70 for the second alternate position. Chris Johnson, PGA Life Member also posted a 70 while PGA Professionals Jon Arnold, Shawn Wilcox, Bill Hancock and John Ogden all posted one-under-par 71.

ailey Schalk of Erie, who just a couple of weeks ago became the first freshman since 2002 to win a girls state high school championship in Colorado, didn't take long to add another major accomplishment to her golf resume. On Thursday, the 15-yearold not only notched her first American Junior Golf Association victory, but she became the first Coloradan to win the AJGA Hale Irwin Colorado Junior by Transamerica. Schalk (pictured) came from four strokes behind entering the final round at Walnut Creek Golf Preserve in Westminster to post a one-stroke victory in the girls division of the tournament. "It's really special," said Schalk, who called it her biggest accomplishment in golf. "Just to win my first one in Colorado is cool. I've been playing really well this year so I thought it was a good tournament to try to win." Schalk, who just completed her freshman year at Holy Family High School, shot a 3-under-par 69 in the final round to finish at 4-under 212. She made five birdies on the final day, including an 8-footer on the 17th hole that put her ahead for good. Then she overcame a poor third shot on the 18th hole to get up and down for par. "I just played aggressive today and I was making more putts," said Schalk, the girls 2016 Colorado Junior Match Play champion. "I was making sure I got them to the hole even if they went 10 feet by. And I made three birdies in a row (4-5-6), which gave me confidence." Charlotte Hillary of Cherry Hills Village, who led after each of the first two rounds, missed a 5-foot birdie putt on the final hole that would have forced a playoff (left). Hillary, also 15, closed with a 74 after a 16-par, two-bogey day. "I'm just super disappointed in myself," said Hillary,

who also was runner-up to Schalk in the 3A state tournament. "I had about five lip-outs so it was really hard because if at least one of them had dropped I would have been in a playoff or something. But that was the difference between today and yesterday and the day before when all of those dropped. Today not one did. "I could have avoided the bogeys I had -- just some mental errors. But bogeys happen and you need to have birdies to even those out and I couldn't execute. That's why the title goes to Hailey." Still, it was by far the best performance in an AJGA event by Hillary, the 2016 girls JGAC Tour Championship winner. "My goal was top three (going into the week), but I had such an advantage going into today, it's just really hard for me to give it up," she said. Trussi Li, a Chinese-born Californian, set the women's course record with a 7-under-par 65 on Thursday to tie Hillary for second place at 213.

"That's my best round ever," said the 16-year-old Li.

JGAC Season Starting to Heat Up! Mulligan, Lehigh Prevail after Marathon Playoffs for First June 8, 2017 It was a perfect day for golf at Overland Park near downtown Denver today. In the Girls Division, Katelyn Lehigh and Taylor Tucker battled through a five hole playoff for honors. Both shooting 79 for the day, Lehigh prevailed with blisters on her feet after the 23 hole marathon. Tucker finished in second and Eva Pett took third after a scorecard playoff between four players at a +8 (80). For the Boys 14-15 division, Will Chadwick took first place with a three-over-par score of 75. Eli Marquez took second place, with a 76 and Cole Reister shot a 77, earning third place. In the competitive Boys 16-18 division, two Chaparral High School teammates competed in a 3-hole playoff after a tie with 18-hole scores of 73. Tyler Mulligan took first place, putting his team mate, Jonas Graham, at second place. Henry Howser rounded out our top three with a 74. Many players were able to capitalize on the opportunities available on this Denver gem. The links style course with its tough pin placements, tree lined fairways and thick rough proved to be a great venue for our JGAC players to shine!

In the girl’s division, Kaylee Chen, from Highlands Ranch walked away with medalist honors after firing a very solid +5, 69. Kaylee made 3 birdies on the back nine to finish the back nine at one under par. Just one stroke behind Kaylee was Sophia Choi of Littleton. Rounding out our top 3 was Hadley Ashton from Erie, shooting a +9, 73. For complete Girls Division results, click HERE. In our boy’s division, Traejan Andrews, from Windsor, finished in first place with a fantastic finish of +1, 65. He made 2 birdies today, offset by just three bogeys. Coming in second place, and just two strokes behind Traejan was Gage Messingham of Arvada. We had a three way tie for 3rd place between Kenny VanWormer, Will Rinehart, and Maxwell Lange. The Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado continued its busy start to the summer season today, heading to Springhill Golf Course, for an 11-13 Series Event.

For the first time, the JGAC conducted IMG Academy Junior World qualifiers for the 7-8 and 9-10 divisions. South Suburban Family Sports GC hosted thirty-seven juniors as they vied for five qualifying spots.

It was a beautiful day for golf as 68 players took the course. The leaderboard was bunched at the top in both the boy’s and girl’s divisions. We saw some fantastic play!

In the Boys 7-8 division, Ashton Edwards of Boulder, CO earned the qualifying spot with a 9-hole score of 41. He beat 1st alternate Jude Gasser of Denver, CO by

Ty Andrews of Windsor, CO secured the 1st alternate spot with a birdie on the first play-off hole while Frank Lockwood of Englewood, CO birdied the second play-off hole to hold the 2nd alternate spot. "I'm so thankful for everything that happened. I didn't really expect to win, to be honest. There's no way that I thought the winning score would be 7 under. That's for sure. I graduated High School in Albuquerque NM in 1981. What was your first introduction to the game of golf? My father Ron was an assistant professional at Rolling Hills CC and I started in there 4 hole Junior program. Why did you choose to become a PGA Golf Professional? For the love of the game it is unique in that you really don’t need anyone else to go play. You can always challenge yourself to be better and the only one you can hold responsible for how you play is myself good or bad. What makes you most proud about being a PGA Professional? Being a part of a great, well respected organization that continues to promote the game. At the age of 12 a friend of the family introduced me to the game. Nobody in my family played golf at that time. Why did you choose to become a PGA Golf Professional? I worked at my home town golf course as it was being built and after it opened. I loved being around golf and couldn’t imagine doing anything else. What makes you most proud about being a PGA Professional? PGA members provide quality instruction to our members and students so they can better enjoy this game of a lifetime. What a privilege it is to be able to introduce the game of golf to thousands of juniors over the years. I also had the privilege to serve as the Volunteer Head Golf Coach at Central Lakes College in Brainerd, Minnesota from 2000-2010. The Men’s golf team captured the National Junior College Championship in 2005 and we had the Individual Men’s National Champion in 2004.

What hobbies do you have outside of golf? Hunting, fishing, skiing, and hiking are my hobbies away from work; I enjoy most everything that takes me to the great outdoors. I also enjoy wine tasting and have been fortunate to have made three trips to Napa, CA in the last five years. My latest hobby has been honing my cooking skills. If you could have a dream foursome, who would it be and why? Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and my wife. These two players have been my golf “heros” since I was a young child. I would want my wife to be able to experience this with me.

Bryne Retires from Saddle Rock Golf Course

ickey Byrne, formerly the PGA Head Professional at Saddle Rock Golf Course retired at the end of May, 2017. Mickey started his career in the golf industry at Foothills Golf Course in Lakewood, CO. He then moved on to serve as a longtime employee of the City of Aurora Golf Division. Byrne spent twenty years working as the Head Professional at Saddle Rock Golf Course. Prior to that, he spent ten years working as the PGA Head Professional.
