I’d like to wish the happiest of holidays to you and your families. I hope this holiday season provides you an opportunity to reflect on everything you’ve accomplished this year, the chance to spend time with your family and time to recharge your batteries for another successful year!

At our recent Board Planning Session, your Board of Directors reflected back on 2017 as we took part in an in-depth SWOT analysis of our section operations. If there was one common theme during the meeting it was that we have a lot of strength’s to be proud of. As I reflect back on the year, I will certainly think about all of those accomplishments! During the SWOT analysis, we also realized that we have a lot of work to do in fine tuning our programs to “Serve the Member and Grow the Game!” If there are questions to ask or ideas to share, I would encourage you to contact one of your board of directors as I can assure you that your questions or ideas will be heard.

As we recharge our batteries, know that we have a lot already planned for 2018. I’m incredibly excited to visit TPC Colorado this coming September to watch our PGA Professional compete on the first brand new golf course in Colorado in nearly ten years! Be sure to check out the entire schedule in this issue of Pro Peaks.

Volunteer at the Denver Golf Expo The Denver Golf Expo is coming up and we need your help! I Wish You Rest! By Eddie Ainsworth, PGA

My Fellow Colorado PGA Professionals, 2017 has been another incredible year here within the Colorado Section and I am so very proud to represent the finest PGA Professionals in the country as your Executive Director. You are truly the best of the best and the data backs up my statement. • Did you know that our Colorado Section has the highest percentage of PGA Members that are Certified PGA Professionals? • Did you know that our Colorado PGA Professionals lead the entire PGA of America in the completion of their required MSRs? • How about the leading Section in Growth of the Game Programs? Colorado. • How about one of the fastest growing Sections in PGA Junior League? Again, Colorado. Every day we focus on providing our PGA Members with the finest support possible to help each of you reach your full potential as a PGA Professional. This would not be possible without the dedicated leadership of our Board of Directors, our Officers, our Committees and the wonderful staff I get to work with each and every day.

I’m not usually one to measure what we do compared to others, but today, I feel like bragging on the people I serve – Our Colorado PGA Professionals. It is no surprise to me that on a regular basis we have a Colorado PGA Professional become a National Award Winner or one being inducted into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame. Nor is it a surprise to me that when you look at the PGA of America’s Business Intelligence Report ranking all Sections in overall performance, our Colorado PGA Professionals and our Section is Ranked #1 out of all 41! Being a leader takes a lot of hard work and commitment. It also takes discipline. Another thing

it takes is rest. Did you know that most Americans do not take all of their allotted vacation time? Whether it is out of fear that someone might replace them while they are gone or that they believe they are the only one who can do the job, vacation time goes unused. Is rest overrated? Do we even know how to rest? Most people, when they come back from a vacation, are left feeling like they need a few more days off to recover and rest from their vacation. If you’re exhausted from your vacation, then maybe it’s time to learn how to take a real rest. Our culture is definitely in need of learning this most basis skill. I’m currently reading a book along with another PGA Professional and several of our friends that talks about living a resilient life. In order to live a resilient life, we need rest – something crucial to living not only a good life but a life able of receiving what only rest can offer us. The book quotes author and poet David Whyte in an effort to help open our minds and hearts to rest:

Rest is the conversation between what we love to do and how we love to be. Rest is the essence of giving and receiving. Rest is an act of remembering, imaginatively and intellectually but also physiologically and physically. To rest is to give up on the already exhausted will as the prime motivator of endeavor, with its endless outward need to reward itself through established goals. To rest is to give up on worrying and fretting and sense that there is something wrong with the world unless we put it right; to rest is to fall back literally or figuratively from outer targets and shift the goal not to an inner bulls eye, an imagined state of perfect stillness, but to an inner state of natural exchange. Therefore, during this Holiday Season when people give gifts and well wishes, I wish you rest. We all work hard and, in order to continue to grow and be the very best we can be, we need to learn the art of rest. he eighth annual Colorado Gives Day online charity drive is in the books, and the state’s nonprofits are $36.1 million better off because of it. Although this was only the second time that the Colorado PGA REACH Foundation was an eligible charity in the 24-hour donation appeal, PGA Professionals and foundation supporters can be proud of the results. Colorado PGA REACH boasted an increase in both the number of donors who gave to the foundation and an increase in the total dollars contributed. “I want to personally thank each of you who took the time to participate in Colorado Gives Day and support our Colorado PGA Foundation,” says Eddie Ainsworth, PGA, Colorado PGA Executive Director/ CEO. “We all know first-hand how the Game of Golf can make a positive impact in the lives of others. Your contributions will go a long way in implementing the three pillars of the Foundation.” The Foundation’s mission and focus are Youth Development and Supporting Our Military, while making the Game of Golf more Diverse and Inclusive. Eighty-one cents of every dollar donated goes directly into these programs. Each year, no-cost Golf in Schools programs are delivered to over 10,000 youth in our public schools, veterans are supported through the PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) Program, and in

Colorado Gives Day Donations Continue to Grow the Game

2018, the Foundation will donate its third Mortgage Free Home to a Combat Wounded Veteran Hero. In addition, numerous “Growth of the Game Grants” are provided to bring new people into the game of golf and several internships and scholarships are awarded. “This year, one of our goals was to increase the percentage of Colorado PGA Members who support the Foundation,” commented Ben Welsh, PGA, Colorado Section Vice President and Board Liaison and Trustee for the Colorado PGA REACH Foundation. “We are pleased to report that the goal was accomplished and our expectations exceeded. We have a great story to tell and a strong network of partners to confirm our value to potential donors.” While Colorado Gives Day is over, ColoradoGives.org operates year-around, accepting donations on behalf of 2,300 charities.

PGA Annual Meeting, Future Championship Sites and more! Dear Colorado PGA Members and Apprentices,

First off, let me introduce myself. I am the new District Director representing District 9 on the PGA National Board. I am heading into my 15th season as the Head Golf Professional at Crane Creek Country Club in Boise, Idaho. In my 28 years as a PGA member, I have served on the Section Boards of the Aloha, Pacific Northwest and the Rocky Mountain Sections, and look forward to serving the members of the Colorado Section over the next three years.

The meeting was accentuated by a special fireside chat with six U.S. Ryder Cup Captains, including Lee Trevino, Lanny Wadkins, Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw, Hal Sutton and current captain Jim Furyk. After the meeting, the PGA of America Board of Directors announced that CEO Pete Bevacquaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contract was extended through the end of 2024.

Future Championship Sites

The 101st PGA Annual Meeting in Austin in early November focused on the PGA Member and the benefits of growing the game of golf to diverse audiences. Some of the highlights of the meeting included the presentation of the PGA National Awards, PGA of America Hall of Fame and the PGA Distinguished Service Award presented to Mark and Debbie Rolfing. Congratulations to Colorado Section PGA Professional Mark Pfingston of the Golf Club at Bear Dance for being awarded the Merchandiser of the Year Award for Public Facilities! In a separate ceremony, PGA Past President M.G. Orender was presented the 2017 Legend of the PGA Award for his contributions to growing the game of golf.

The PGA of America announced that The Olympic Club in San Francisco will host the 2028 PGA Championship and the 2032 Ryder Cup. This will be the first time the PGA of America will stage any of its pillar events at The Olympic Club, which has hosted five U.S. Opens on its famed Lake Course.

There were five resolutions presented for consideration to the delegates. Three resolutions passed: Resolution 1 pertaining to the Constitution and Bylaws Restructure; Resolution 2 pertaining to the realignment of District Director Class Sizes; and Resolution 3 pertaining to the Mandatory Member Assistance Program. The remaining two resolutions failed: Resolution 4 pertaining to the addition of a Life-Member Tour Member Classification; and Resolution 5 pertaining to awarding education

credits for PGA membership for graduation from nationally accredited golf specific career colleges.

The PGA of America also announced that Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, will host the 2024 PGA Championship, as well as the 2018 Boys Junior PGA Championship. In yet another announcement, the PGA of America said Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, will host the 2020 KPMG Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s PGA Championship and the 2027 PGA Championship. Hopefully all of you are making plans to attend the 2018 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando on January 24-26, 2018, with the Demo Day scheduled for January 23. Colorado’s Newest Course to Host 2018 Colorado PGA Professional Championship TPC Colorado to Host Colorado PGA Professional Championship September 10-12, 2018 Colorado Professionals will have the unique opportunity to test their skills on Colorado’s newest golf course this September, the same layout where some of the best professional golfers will compete in the near future. The Colorado PGA is excited to announce that the 2018 Colorado-Section PGA Professional Championship will be hosted by TPC Colorado on September 10-12.

TPC Colorado, located near Berthoud, has the distinction of being the state’s first ground-up golf course development in nearly 10 years opening as a combination semi-private/high-end daily-fee course. Scheduled to open in the spring of 2018, this tournament will be one of the first to take place on the newly developed course. Colorado PGA Executive Director/CEO Eddie Ainsworth, PGA, comments, “This is an incredible opportunity for our Members to play their 2018 Section Championship on not only a brand new course but on

a TPC quality course. We understand that not every facility is able to open their course up to the Section for three days so to have the TPC staff make a course of this caliber available for our Section’s Professional Championship is absolutely amazing.” The Arthur Schaupeter-designed Scottish linksstyle course is scheduled to debut in 2018 with an infrastructure built to accommodate professional tournaments. It will feature sweeping majestic views of the Rocky Mountains and is nestled alongside the waters of three reservoirs – Lonetree, McNeil and Welch Reservoirs. Each hole will feature seven sets of tees allowing the course to be stretched out to 7,991 yards to provide a challenging round of golf for TOUR players but also permitting for a round as short as 4,157 yards giving recreational golfers an opportunity to play the course at a length they find enjoyable. owner representative, when he says, “We are equally excited to host the Colorado Section PGA Championship in 2018. TPC Colorado offers 18 memorable holes and we believe the membership is going to appreciate all the course has to offer from the challenging venue to the spectacular views.” According to Collins, the par-72 layout will take players on a full tour of the site with a combination of short and long holes and small and large greens. Holes playing from elevated ridges with spectacular panoramic views of Longs Peak is visible from nearly the entire golf course at TPC Colorado. (Photo courtesy of Devin Sena) Long’s Peak and the entire Front Range will make it very obvious to golfers they are in Colorado, while the holes laid out along the shorelines of the large reservoirs with their stacked-sod pot bunkers and fescue-lined fairways will give golfers a sense of the Scottish heritage of the sport. TPC Colorado’s biggest obstacle to protect par are its bunkers, which are Scottish-style stacked sod with steep, sheer walls. These bunkers have been positioned and designed to enhance the strategic options for players and are used judiciously throughout the course. Also, contouring on the fairways and greens often results in partial views of the flagsticks when hitting approach shots. “The timing is good to host the Colorado Section’s Professional Championship,” continues Collins. “Once the Web.com events get placed on the schedule, we will not have the opportunity to host a multi-day event like this one.” TPC Colorado has a five-year agreement to host a Web.com tournament beginning in 2019. “I hope our Colorado PGA Members will take advantage of this opportunity and that they appreciate the privilege of being able to play this TPC course right after it opens,” concludes Ainsworth. “We thank Larry and Chad for their foresight to make this happen.” The Colorado PGA Professional Championship is held the Monday after Labor Day each year and is a friendly rivalry among the men and women of the Colorado Section. It is certain that the best players in the state will be pleased and sufficiently challenged by the layout of the TPC Colorado course.

2018 Colorado PGA Tournament Schedule Announced

We are excited to announce the 2018 Tournament Schedule as we have a number of facilities that have not been on the schedule in recent years. Scholarship Opportunities Available Through PGA of America and Colorado PGA

The application process for PGA of America and Colorado PGA scholarships has now started. Applicants must fill out this single application to be eligible for both scholarships. The PGA of America and Colorado PGA Scholarships program provides college scholarships for children and grandchildren of PGA Members. It encourages and promotes the attainment of higher educational goals based on evidence of a high level of academic achievement during high school or college. Growth of the Game Grant Applications Available for 2018

Applications available online - deadline set for February 16, 2018

olorado PGA REACH Grant Applications are designed to provide financial assistance to facilities within the geographic boundaries of the Colorado Section PGA, that employ PGA members or apprentices in good standing, to develop and/or significantly enhance Growth of the Game programs that will attract and retain new golfers. Growth of the Game grants have been used to help launch facility level programs that are focused on traditionally underserved communities. In addition, grants have been used to partially subsidize the cost of the implementation of PGA Family Tees, military focused programs, and to provide access to facilities for new or lapsed golfers who might otherwise not have the financial resources to participate in growth of the game programs. MSR Credits - You Need Them, We Have Them! Below is a list of many Colorado PGA Education Seminars and events that Colorado PGA members can earn MSR credits by attending. The information below and the MSR Completion Survey are meant as a resource to help members earn all of their required MSR points. It is, however, just a guideline. MSR points can be earned from a variety of other opportunities.

By filling out and submitting the MSR Completion Form, members will be able to set a plan to attain all of your MSR points for the cycle ending on June 15, 2018. Members will receive a copy of the results as well as notify the Section Staff of the events you plan to attend. Staff will follow up with an email that includes the registration links to the events you have selected. Please understand that both of these tools are dynamic and will change between now and the end of the MSR Cycle. We will communicate all changes to the members via our weekly email, monthly magazine and ColoradoPGA.com

Online Opportunities PGA Merchandise Show Business Videos Eight free, online video courses. MSR credit may be earned only one time for any online MSR course. In order to earn MSR credit, you must score a 70% or higher on the assessment. If you do not score 70% or higher, you will be allowed one re-take opportunity. You will be directed to the assessment when the video concludes. Members must have the updated version of web browsers. Once video has started you must allow the video to run in its entirety without any interruptions such as stopping or pausing. New Year’s Resolution vs. Revolution A

s tradition, many people (including PGA professionals) are making, and will make, New Year’s Resolutions. That is, they will promise themselves that they will lose weight, stop smoking, start exercising or something of that nature. Webster defines a resolution as: “a) a resolving, or determining; deciding b) the thing determined upon; decision as to future action; resolve.” Now, this sounds good, and it makes people feel better about themselves to make a promise concerning something they plan to do, or something they plan to stop.

However, the problem with resolutions is that they tend to be forgotten within just a few days, or weeks, at the most. In truth, what we really need is a revolution! Webster defines revolution as “a) a complete or radical change of any kind b) overthrow of a government, form of government, or social system by those governed and usually by forceful means, with another government or system taking its place.”This is exactly what most PGA professionals need to have happen in their lives and careers. We need to experience a radical change in the way we think and in the way we perform to improve our careers. As a PGA professional, how can we use a revolution to enhance our career? Most can wish that they will work harder to increase

their income through additional teaching, increase in rounds or increasing merchandise sales, work harder on their game to lower their scores, or maybe try to land a better job. To make these wishes become successful, there must be a total revolution instead of a resolution. Otherwise, within 60 days you will return to the daily routines that got you where you are currently. How to be successful in a Revolution? A complete or radical change is how it is defined. You must have a plan and keep referring to that plan religiously. This plan must be attainable both during the off season as well during the peak season when most PGA members are working long hours. Here are several tips to have a successful revolution: Time management- you must make the time to follow the plan and take actions that will make your goals successful. There is no reason that you could not be successful with all of the goals that you set. Take care of business each day, establish a daily “to- do list” whether it is on a sheet of paper on your desk or on your mobile device. You will be more successful in accomplishing these important tasks if you prepare a list. Communicate - successfully communicate both upward to your employer and downward to your staff. Before a PGA professional can communicate effectively upward to their employer, a PGA Manager must be able to master effective communication downwards and laterally. The PGA professional must have good communication to and from his/her managers and their respective departments as well as lateral communication to the members and community before he can communicate upwards. Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer opportunities are available at a number of Colorado PGA events. Members will earn 1 Non-Required MSR credit for each hour of volunteer work. Please contact Holly Champion (hchampion@pgahq.com) to volunteer for any of these events. Drive, Chip and Putt Volunteer opportunities are available at all Drive, Chip and Putt events. Volunteer opportunities are for two hour increments at a time. Members can volunteer multiple times per day and for multiple days. The 2018 Drive, Chip and Putt Schedule will be available by January, 2018. Denver Golf Expo Volunteer opportunities are available at the Denver Golf Expo for “Free 10 Minutes Lessons.” Volunteer opportunities are for two to two and a half hour increments. Members can volunteer multiple times per day and for multiple days. Colorado PGA Golf in Schools Volunteer opportunities are available at all Colorado PGA Golf in Schools programs. Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado (JGAC) Volunteer opportunities are available at all JGAC tournaments. Volunteers will serve as on course scoring volunteers. PGA Junior League Captain Registration Now Open! P GA Junior League has been a trending topic lately so surely you’ve heard and seen plenty via Section Newsletters and emails, the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado or national PGA communications. If you have questions about getting started, this Stepby-Step Guide will get you off to a good start. There you will also find Frequently Asked Questions, ranging from “How many players do I need to start a team?” to “How much should I charge?”. The Colorado PGA is also offering four PGA Junior League Workshops for you to learn more about starting a new team or helping your current program flourish. • January 9th at South Suburban Golf Course, Starting at 8:00am. • January 16th at Fort Collins Country Club, Starting at 8:00am. • January 18th at The Country Club of Colorado, Starting at 8:00am.

Each Workshop will be divided into two parts. The first two hours (8:00am-10:00am) will be geared toward starting a new team. We will discuss how to get started, recruit players, schedule matches and many other useful aspects of PGA Junior League team operations.
