PGA Professionals Competing at PGA Professional Championship
Major Championship golf returns to Colorado this month as the Broadmoor will host the US Senior Open on the venerable East Course. We are incredibly excited to be hosting a number of events in conjunction with the Senior Open including our Home Giveaway at the Vince Gill/Amy Grant concert on Monday night, our Drive, Chip & Putt qualifier on Tuesday, the Women’s Leadership Summit on Wednesday and the Youth Golf Experience throughout the week. For our Class A PGA Members, Life Members and Master Professional Members, along with a spouse or guest, you have access to complimentary tickets to the Championship. We also have the availability for our members to gain entry into the Military Bunker alongside the 18th green. Be sure to request tickets at your earliest convenience before they are all gone! Good luck to two of our best senior players as Doug Rohrbaugh and Chris Johnson will be competing in the event. Be sure to check out their starting times and follow along to support them along the way.

Andonian Qualifies for US Senior Women’s Open The USGA created the US Senior Women’s Open this past year and we couldn’t be more excited to have one of our own, Sherry Andonian, representing the Section when the event gets started July 12-16, 2018, at Chicago Golf Club. The event will feature 120 of the finest professional and amateur females 50 and over, vying for a total purse of $1 million. This will be Andonian’s fifth major championship after having played in four LPGA Champion-

There has been a lot of change in women’s golf in the Section over the past year. We announced at the Spring Meeting that the winner (or highest finishing PGA Professional) of the Colorado PGA Women’s Championship will earn an all-expenses paid entry into the Women’s Stroke Play Championship in Port St. Lucie, FL. If that wasn’t enough, we are happy to announce that, starting this year, we will be recognizing a Women’s Player of the Year!
Eight Colorado PGA members will compete this week at the PGA Professional Championship in Monterrey, CA. I want to wish all of the players the best of luck as they compete in our Associations major championship. Registration Open for Section Championships Playing and competing are certainly at the forefront of our association this month. That holds true for our Section Majors as registration is open for all of our Major Championships. We are incredibly excited to host our Section Championship at TPC Colorado in September. The first brand new course built in Colorado in the past decade will provide a fun, stern test of golf. Registration for the event closes on August 22, 2018. We’ll visit Saddle Rock Golf Course July 30-31, 2018, for our National Car Rental Colorado PGA Assistant Professional Championship and Black Bear Golf Club, August 13-14, 2018 for our Senior PGA Professional Championship. We’ll head north to The Ranch Country Club to host our Colorado PGA Women’s Championship, August 22-23, 2018, and return to Aspen Glen Club for our West Chapter Championship on October 2-3, 2018. Our vision for some time now through our Foundation, Colorado PGA REACH, has been to make a positive difference in the lives of others through the game of golf. I’m here to tell you that you are making a difference!!! Junior Golf is exploding in the Colorado Section, our programs in Support of Our Military are growing and you are making Golf a more Diverse and Inclusive Game. All of these things do not happen without the support of our Colorado PGA Members and people are taking notice, as you truly are the Best of the Best in our industry! I am so pleased to report to you that during the recent Schomp BMW Cup at The Golf Club of Ravenna, a Colorado AvidGolfer Magazine Event, we raised over $50,000 for our Foundation!

Schomp BMW Cup Raises $50,000 for Colorado PGA REACH Foundation O
n two of the most perfect spring days in Colorado, 80 golfers teed off at the Schomp BMW Cup put on by Colorado AvidGolfer Magazine at Ravenna Golf Club. The benefitting charity was the Colorado PGA REACH Foundation where more than $50,000 was raised to further its goal to impact lives through golf. “The donations to the Foundation exceeded our expectations,” says Eddie Ainsworth, PGA, Colorado Section Executive Director/CEO. “We are delighted by the outpouring of support we received from contributors who helped us raise more funding than we have in previous years.” Participants were extremely generous during the auctions, both live and silent. Always a fast-paced event, the paddle-raise challenge to win dinner at Shanahan’s again showed great action. Twenty-three unique bidders raised their paddles in quick succession donating $100 each time to vie for this elusive prize. Part way through the bidding, Marc Steron, Shanahan’s co-owner, raised the stakes by upping the guest count from 10 to 15 to encourage continued action.

“The Colorado PGA REACH Foundation has partnered with Colorado AvidGolfer Magazine at this event for a number of years,” comments Eddie Ainsworth, PGA, Colorado Section Executive Director/CEO. “We are honored to be a part of this great affair and to be able to share the excitement of the Foundation to this influential group of golfers. They have been and continue to be very generous to the objectives and goals of the Foundation.” The Foundation will be holding multiple events for each of its Pillars – Youth Development, Supporting Our Military and Diversity and Inclusion – during the 2018 U.S. Senior Open at The Broadmoor on June 24 – July 1. Senior PGA Championship, Hit the Green for HOPE and more I’ll begin this article by extending my best wishes to those Colorado Section golf professionals who are competing in the Professional National Championship this month at Bayonet Blackhorse in the Monterey California area. Bayonet Blackhorse is a great test of golf and should prove to once again be a great venue for the PNC. Broadhurst Wins 2018 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship Paul Broadhurst claimed the Alfred S. Bourne Trophy at the 2018 KitchenAid Senior PGA Champion. Broadhurst finished with a score of 265, 18-under par, matching the tournament record score. His final round 63 was the lowest final-round score by a champion in championship history. PGA Life Member Mark Mielke of Jupiter, Fla., was Low Club Professional for the second time. Mielke, 55, posted a 72-hole total of 288, 4-over par. He finished in 72nd place and was the only Club Professional to play on the weekend. Marriott Golf, one of the world’s premier golf operators, has once again teamed up with PGA REACH – the charitable foundation of the PGA of America – for the 3rd Annual Hit the Green for HOPE promotion that supports PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) golf programming for United States military Veterans with disabilities. Kicking off the year-long campaign over Memorial Day Weekend, golfers had the opportunity to take part in the Hit the Green for HOPE promotion at participating Marriott Golf properties nationwide. All proceeds from the campaign will support or enhance PGA HOPE programming. PGA HOPE is the flagship Military program of PGA REACH. The HOPE program introduces

golf to Veterans with disabilities, in order to enhance their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being. Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa to Host Premier PGA Member Championships Beginning in 2019, Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa of Austin, Texas, will host the 29th PGA Cup and the inaugural Women’s PGA Cup – the premier international competition for men and women PGA Professionals. Barton Creek will also be the site of the PGA’s two largest all-professional events, the 2020 PGA Professional Championship and the 2019 Senior PGA Professional Championship. The PGA Cup, which matches 10-member United States and Great Britain & Ireland Teams in a Ryder Cup-style format, will be contested September 23-29, 2019. The Women’s PGA Cup, October 22-26, is a 54-hole stroke play event that is anticipated to attract five-member teams from Australia, Canada, Great Britain & Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden and the United States. Both will be conducted on the Fazio Foothills Course. The 53rd PGA Professional Championship presented by Club Car and OMEGA in April 2020 will feature a 312-member nationwide field and be conducted on a course rotation to be determined. The 31st Senior PGA Professional Championship presented by Golf Advisor in October 2019 has a 264-member field and will be conducted on the Fazio Foothills and Coore Crenshaw Courses. Colorado Students Score When It Comes to PGA of America Scholarships
Colorado high school seniors and college students who applied for scholarships through the PGA of America and the Colorado PGA achieved great heights for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year. With nearly $40,000 being committed, all applicants were awarded a scholarship! In addition, of the 41 PGA Sections across the country, the Colorado PGA students led the nation in the number of PGA of America - John Cox Scholarships earned – three out of 10. The PGA of America’s Financial Assistance Fund Scholarship Program awarded scholarships to 11 Colorado applicants totaling $31,000 to be used in the 2018-19 school year. The Colorado PGA will be granting eight scholarships to local students totaling $7,250. Colorado PGA Members Have Access to 2018 US Senior Open General Tickets
As a courtesy extended by the USGA, Class A PGA Members, Life Members and Master Professional Members along with a spouse or guest have access to complimentary tickets to the Championship. Unfortunately, this offer is only for PGA Members and does not extend to Associates or PGA Golf Management University Students. PGA Members will be required to show Membership Card and Photo I.D. to receive tickets. All tickets will be held at Will-Call for pick-up on a daily basis.
Military Bunker Tickets Going to the 2018 U.S. Senior Open at The Broadmoor? Then enjoy admission into The Bunker Hospitality Suite complimentary of the Colorado PGA REACH Foundation. The Colorado PGA has secured 50 Bunker passes for each day (Thursday through Sunday - June 28-July 1) to share with its Members. Tickets will first be offered to Class A Members and then to Associates. The Bunker Hospitality Suite, featuring complimentary food and beverage, will be located behind the 18th green. To best serve the maximum number of Colorado Professionals, the tickets will be issued on a first-come, firstserved basis. Each Professional will be allowed to reserve two (2) passes for a single day. Tickets will be picked up on-site at the JGAC Junior Golf Experience. Any tickets not picked up by 1:00 p.m. on the reserved day will be made available to another member requesting access that day. Click here to reserve your tickets.

he Colorado Section will be hosting a Youth Experience area at The Broadmoor during the U.S. Senior Open on June 25-July 1. We are still looking for a few PGA Professionals to provide instruction to these young golfers. Volunteers are being schedule for half-day blocks. Member Assistance Program to Begin July 1 SupportLinc is the new Member Assistance Program for PGA Professionals The FY2018/2019 annual dues invoices, to be sent out in early May, includes a $5 line item charge for the new Member Assistance Program (MAP). The MAP provides members and associates with access to licensed health professionals, short-term counseling, legal and financial consultation, dependent care referrals and technologybased resources to assist in every aspect of life.

The Member Assistance Program is a result of Resolution 3, which was passed at the 2017 PGA Annual Meeting last fall. The program becomes effective on July 1, 2018.

The SupportLinc Member Assistance Program (MAP) is a company-sponsored resource that helps you deal with life’s challenges and the demands that come with balancing home and work. SupportLinc provides confidential, professional counseling for a wide array of personal and work-related concerns. More information will be distributed as it becomes available.
You and your immediate family members can contact SupportLinc at any time, day or night, and speak directly to a licensed MAP counselor. The experienced SupportLinc counselor will collect some general information about you and will talk to you about the nature of your issue. This process is called an “intake”. Once the intake conversation is completed, the counselor will schedule an in-person appointment with a nearby clinician who best fits the need that was identified during the intake.

For the fourth year in a row the Colorado PGA REACH Foundation hosted the United States Olympic Committee and their Finding Leaders Among Minorities Everywhere (FLAME) program. For the second consecutive year the Club at Flying Horse played host to the golf clinic at the conclusion of the week long program. The U.S. Olympic Committee’s Finding Leaders Among Minorities Everywhere (FLAME) program provides diverse college and graduate-level students with a unique look into the world of elite sport. This eight-day program offers an exciting and rigorous curriculum designed to increase knowledge of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic movements. Accepted students participate in personal and professional development workshops in preparation for a career in sports. FLAME is an intersectional program, and encourages students of color of all sexual orientations, abilities, genders and gender identities, and income levels to apply.

Zaremba’s Motivation Comes From Giving Back M
ore than deserving of the recognition, Mike Zaremba, PGA, Director of Golf at Desert Hawk, is the recipient of the 2018 Colorado PGA REACH Foundation Youth Development Pillar Award. A 36-year veteran in the golf community and a 27-year mainstay in the Pueblo market, Zaremba has experienced many changes in the world of golf. His most recent perception…there are many more young golfers coming to the course. “Everything is cyclical,” comments Zaremba. “I think society is swinging back to where kids are spending more time outdoors again so parents are more regularly bringing their children to the course. We are definitely seeing more young golfers. What better place is there for them than being around the golf course?”
Zaremba offers multiple opportunities for young golfers to access the course. He runs summer youth programs through the Pueblo Metro District, opens the course up for high school teams to practice and runs a PGA Jr. League program, to name a few. The course also encourages participation from this age group through reduced junior rates on rounds and buckets of balls. In the three years that he has captained PGA Jr. League teams, his program has continued to gain strength. Starting with just 12 golfers the first year, numbers increased to 30 in the second and recorded 75 last year. With his philosophy being that anyone who wants to come out and learn to play golf is welcome, the numbers are likely to continue on this upward trajectory in year four. To effectively teach each participant, Zaremba divides participants into teams of 10 for their weekly lessons, reserving Saturday for practical experience on the course. He considers himself lucky to have the assistance of other talented golf professionals in the development of these young players. Zaremba believes that getting kids playing golf as early as 7- or 8-years of age not only creates a life-long golfer but it gives them that initial boost they need to become an outstanding player. He is also confident that if they get involved early and make it through that first season, they will keep coming back – thus,

creating that life-long golfer. “It’s tough for kids 7- or 8-years old to focus on a full round of golf; they just don’t have the attention span they need to do that yet. However, they are anxious and able to learn the skills,” discusses Zaremba. “Then, in subsequent years and, especially as they reach 10 or 11, they are able to better focus and they can start to strategize. They watch each other’s shots and really start to figure out the better or easier shot. “It is a joy to watch them at this stage. They are beginning to process so much of the mental game and are discovering the full concept of golf.” This belief of teaching golf to the young is visible in Zaremba’s PGA Jr. League program where he fields teams of 7- and 8-year old players in an effort to get them involved and to give them tournament experience. Therefore, when building his post-season teams, it is his practice to include one or two of the younger players along with the more experienced golfers. “I don’t build my teams for post-season play; my goal is to get youth involved,” clarifies Zaremba. “Now that we are in year four of playing in the PGA Jr. League, those 7- and 8-year old players from our first year are now 11 and 12 years old and are becoming pretty good golfers. I believe that because of these extra years of experience, they will outperform those golfers who

were not exposed to this level of play at an earlier age. I hope to be able to see some of the benefits of this perspective this year but it will hopefully really show-up in the next couple years.” When asked what drives him to work with the younger golfers, Zaremba replies that it is all about giving back. “I’ve played quite a bit and won a number of tournaments over my time,” states Zaremba. “Pretty soon, your skills start to diminish, which mine have and my way to continue to make a difference is to give back. Having the opportunity to work with the youth and help them develop their skills is a rewarding way for me to give back to the sport that has given so much to me.”
“What we do here at Desert Hawk is simple…we just want to get kids interested in the game of golf. We want them to have fun. I think that is why they come back and why we are seeing so many more young golfers on our course than we did in past years,” concludes Zaremba. Zaremba took up the game of golf in high school when some of his basketball buddies convinced him to play with them, leading to his placement on the high school golf team. He went off to college on a basketball scholarship, earning himself a golf scholarship after the first year. He got into the PGA in 1976 and became a PGA Member in 1981.He has worked with the Pueblo Municipal Courses – Desert Hawk and Walking Stick – since 1991.

Four Trustees Join Colorado PGA REACH Foundation T
he Colorado PGA REACH Foundation is pleased to announce the addition of four new Trustees to its Board. The Board, which is made up of diverse business professionals, provides the leadership to carry out the Foundation’s mission of furthering the scope of the game of golf and fostering the growth of the three pillars of the REACH Foundation. “As the work of the Colorado PGA REACH Foundation continues to expand, we are excited to also increase the number of trustees working to help us spread the word about our mission,” says Ben Welsh, PGA, Colorado PGA Vice President. “These new trustees bring a wealth of experience and expertise in their fields and understand the power the game of golf can have on others. They will be tremendous assets to our Foundation as we further our goal of supporting our PGA Professionals.” John Andrew completed a 40-year career in the U.S. Air Force in 2016 as a Brigadier General. He held a variety of technical and policy analysis jobs during his career, as well as serving as a research fellow at the RAND Corporation and a member of the personal staff of the Secretary of the Air Force. He holds a PhD from Harvard University and is a graduate of the Air War College. He also served as the Chief of Assessment for the Multi-National Force-Iraq during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. From 2005 until his retirement, he was the Permanent Professor and Head, Department of Mathematical Sciences at the Air Force Academy. Dan Bennett is a Colorado Native. After receiving his BA in Economics from Princeton University, he started a commercial real estate career with Grubb & Ellis. From there, he then became a partner with BWAB Oil and Gas, a 70-year-old oil and gas company headquartered in Denver. In early 2006, Dan joined Stuart Bruening as investor/partner in Southwest Greens Management, which owns and operates multiple

golf facilities in Colorado including Bear Dance, Plum Creek and Colorado National, and manages Riverdale Dunes and Knolls. In 2015, Dan was part of the acquisition team to acquire Adam’s Rib Country Club that re-branded and re-purposed as Frost Creek Golf Club. John Bond brings nearly 30 years of golf-industry experience with which to address any challenges or opportunities that face a golf operation. He is a Ferris State PGM graduate, a golf pro, an outside sales representative, a sales and marketing executive, an entrepreneur and an innovator. He was involved as a senior executive with Imperial for the better part of 20 years, until the company moved out of Colorado. He currently runs his own consulting business and is an agent for Remax Urban Properties. Dr. Phil Brown is the President and Founder of Six Points Consulting, LLC. His practitioner-focus areas include executive and leadership coaching, leadership development, organizational culture, organizational management and change, organizational resilience, and training and educational development. Brown served 30 years in the U.S. Air Force, six years in the defense contractor industry and nine years in federal government civil service. “Additionally, we wish to thank Lisa Potvin, Captain, U.S. Navy Retired, for her service as a trustee,” concludes Welsh. “Lisa was one of the Foundation’s original trustees and, having fulfilled her three-year term as a Trustee, found this to be an appropriate time to relinquish her position as she is spending more time in Florida. She remains an avid supporter of the Foundation and will continue to support its mission in other ways.”

Revenue Equals Success, Success Equals Revenue! Generating Revenues and Communicating Your Accomplishments
O
ver time, there have been many quotes related to success in business. None may be as important as one uttered by Benjamin Franklin. He said, “Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement and success have no meaning.” This is very true in our industry today as employers are looking for improvement, achievement and success from their PGA Professional, whether they are conducting a search for a new manager, overseeing their day-to-day operations or conducting a year-end review.
In order to succeed in procuring that “dream job,” or continuing to succeed in the job you currently have, the wise professional pays attention to demonstrating real accomplishment in the area of revenue generation. Every facility, private to municipal, needs to maximize top line (gross) revenues and the PGA Professional must be one of the critical factors in driving those revenues.

Utilize the Employer Communication Tool that is available on PGA.org. This tool is a great way to establish regular written communication of your successes, which can include a piece on ideas you have implemented to increase revenues and their quantified results.

Quantify your total yearly incremental revenue from player development programming by utilizing the PGA Revenue Scorecard. Total yearly incremental revenue reported in the Revenue Scorecard is a key business measure that can be shared with your facility ownership or with your supervisor to demonstrate the value and revenue that you’ve driven to the facility through your instructional programming.
Many employers I have worked with routinely discuss and put a premium on the following when hiring a management level employee: •
Must have the ability to be creative in programming and the marketing of events to increase participation and the revenue associated with it • Identify new customers/ members and create the appropriate atmosphere people want to be a part of and be active at the facility

There is another old business adage called “Cash is King!” In our current job market, this adage can separate you from the rest of the field if you have lived by it and demonstrated success with it to your employer. Being a “rainmaker” is paramount to success in our industry. Ask yourself, are you doing enough at your facility to bring about real increases in top line revenues? If you are, then communication is your next step. If you are not, then use the tools the PGA of America has to offer and/or start working with your employer on new ways to bring about revenue growth. As you plan for new and exciting programs, ways to invite customers/members to participate and put forth new ideas for revenue generation, remember that these successes will add to your value as an employee. Don’t just communicate your successes to your employer, yell it from the rooftops and make sure they hear you!

Eight Members Competing in Professional Championship T
he Colorado PGA will be well represented when the 2018 PGA Professional Championship presented by Club Car and OMEGA gets underway on Sunday, June 17, 2018, in Monterrey, Calif. Eight members, seven of which qualified at the 2017 Colorado PGA Professional Championship, will be part of the 312 members competed at the Bayonet Black Horse Golf Club.
Highlighting the field is the 2017 Colorado PGA Professional Champion, John Ogden. Ogden, the Head Professional at Cherry Hills Country Club, is making his tenth start in the national championship. Ogden has qualified 11 times but elected to not play one of those years. He will be joined by two of his Assistant Professionals at Cherry Hills Country Club, Derek Rush and Jack Allen. Both players will be making their first appearance in the event. Joining the trio from Cherry Hills Country Club is Rick Cole, Head Professional from Eaton Country Club. Cole finished runner up in the 2017 Colorado PGA Professional Championship and will be making his second appearance in the national championship after previously qualifying 31 years ago in 1987! Competing in his second national championship is Jordan Gibbs, Assistant Professional from Denver Country Club. Gibbs has qualified both times while a member of the Philadelphia Section. Geoff Keffer, Assistant Professional from Greater Golfer Development Center will be making his third appearance; Barry Milstead, Head Professional from Valley Country Club will be making at least his sixth appearance; and Micah Rudosky, PGA Head Professional from Conquistador Golf Course in Cortez, Colo., will be making his sixth appearance in the event. Andonian Qualifies for First Ever U.S. Senior Women’s Open W
hen 120 of the best professional and amateur female golfers 50 years of age and over tee up for the inaugural U.S. Senior Women’s Open, one of Colorado’s finest will be among them. Sherry Andonian, Golf Instructor at Valley Country Club, will be representing the Colorado Section at the 2018 U.S. Senior Women’s Open being played at Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Ill., on July 12-15, 2018, and will be vying for a total purse of $1 million.
Although this will be Andonian’s fifth major championship, this is a big one for her. She had essentially stopped attempting to qualify for USGA events as the U.S. Women’s Open had been her only option. Rohrbaugh Partners With Lynch to Claim Myran Craig Pro-Pro Championship D
oug Rohrbaugh has gotten off to a hot start in 2017 and his strong play continued at the 2017 Myran Craig Pro-Pro Championship. Rohrbaugh, who leads both the Dow Finsterwald OMEGA Player of the Year and the OMEGA Senior Player of the Year races, partnered with John Lynch, the Head Professional at River Valley Ranch Golf Club to post 91 points in the Modified Stableford event.
During the first round of Four Ball Stroke Play, the duo made eight birdies and gave no shots back to the field. In the alternate shot second round, the duo made four birdies, two bogeys and a doublebogey to claim top honors. Finishing in second place, just one point behind, was the team of George Kahrhoff and Cody Kent, the Director of Golf and an Associate Professional Cody Kent rolls in one of nine biridies during the first round of the Myran Craig Pro-Pro Championship. from the Club at Ravenna. Riegger Claims CoBank Colorado Senior Open Title Hanson Finishes as Low Section Professional
J
ohn Riegger, a former Champions Tour winner, claimed the top spot and the $8,500 first place prize at the 2018 CoBank Colorado Senior Open on Friday, June 1, 2018. Riegger, who resides in Henderson, NV, posted a final round threeunder-par 69 to claim a one shot victory over Brian Cooper and Skip Kendall. Riegger finished the week with a winning score of nine-under-par 207. Kendall, who posted three wins on the Nationwide Tour and competed on the PGA Tour for a number of year, started the day in the lead but was undone by a one-over-par 73. Cooper, from Pittsburgh, PA, challenged Riegger by posting a final round, four-under-par 68 to get within a shot. A number of Colorado PGA Professionals put on a strong showing. Jeff Hanson, PGA Director of Golf at Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, CO, posted rounds of 68-71-71 to finish at six-under-par 210. Hanson claimed the best finish among Colorado PGA Professionals. Finishing just a shot behind Hanson was a quartet of Colorado PGA Members. Doug Rohrbaugh (70-70-71), Mike Northern (72-69-70), Rick Cole (68-72-71) and Mike Zaremba (70-66-75) all finished at five-under-par 211. Cole and Lanting Tie at Fort. Collins C.C. Pro-Am I
t was a strong field at the Ft. Collins Country Club Pro-Am on Monday, May 14, with seven players contending for the top three spots. Leading the way in the PGA Professional Contest at 2-under-par 69 were Rick Cole, PGA Head Professional at Eaton Country Club, and Ben Lanting, Assistant Professional at Bear Creek Golf Club, who tied for first place. In a five-way tie for the third place and carding a 1-underpar 70’s were Blake Sharamitaro, PGA Assistant Professional at Riverdale Golf Club; Zane Zwemke, PGA Head Professional at Saddle Rock Golf Course; Ben Honaman, PGA Head Professional at Lakewood Country Club; Andrew Hedrick, PGA Head Professional at Country Club at Castle Pines; and Mike Northern, PGA Life Member. The team contest was won with an 18-under-par by Tray Shehee, PGA Director of Instruction at Ute Creek Golf Course, with his team of Rick Smith, Mike Shorey and Leigh Shorey. The team contest utilized a 3-2-1 Net Team Contest; 1 score on Par 3’s, 2 scores on Par 4’s and 3 scores on Par 5’s. Hackenberg, Milstead and Rohrbaugh Tie at Lakewood C.C. Pro-Am

he Lakewood Country Club Pro-Am on Monday, June 4, finished with three PGA Professional splitting the first-place purse. Bryan Hackenberg, Assistant at Todd Creek Golf Club; Barry Milstead, Head Professional with Valley Country Club; and Doug Rohrbaugh, Teaching Professional at Ironbridge Golf Club, all finished the round two-under par 69. On the heels of the trio and finishing fourth place with a round of one-under-par 70 was Rudy Casteneda, PGA Head Professional at Indian Tree Golf Club. Rounding out the top five with a tie at even par rounds of 71 were Chris Johnson, PGA Life Member; Scott Hart, PGA Life Member; and Scott Sommers, PGA Head Professional at Saddleback Golf Club. In the team event, Joseph Carlton, PGA Head Professional at Legacy Ridge Golf Course, led his team of Jay Anderson, Troy Segal and Andrew Caldwell to a victory at 18-under-par, two shots ahead of the secondplace teams. Rohrbaugh Wins Pro-Lady Event D
oug Rohrbaugh, PGA Teaching Professional at Ironbridge Golf Club, won the Professional Contest of the Pro-Lady on Monday, June 11 at Red Rocks Country Club with a score of 1-under-par 70. Hot on his heals were Zane Zwemke, PGA Head Professional at Saddle Rock Golf Course, and Bobby Quaratino, PGA Head Professional at West Woods Golf Club, who both carded rounds of even par 71’s, one stroke behind Rohrbaugh. In the team event, Geoff Keffer, PGA, Assistant Professional at Greater Golfer Development Center, led his team of ladies - Rochelle Keffer, Wendy Veto and Sue Hopkins - to a victory at 19-under-par, one shot ahead of the second-place teams. Just Like Last Year Davis Bryant, Hailey Schalk repeat as champions at Colorado Junior PGA; Cal McCoy, Caroline Jordaan also qualify for national Junior PGA Championship by Gary Baines - 6/13/2018 he 2018 major championship season for the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado started off a lot like how the 2017 year ended. And, for that matter, how the 2017 season began.

For the second straight year at the Air Force Academy’s Eisenhower Golf Club, the titles in the Colorado Junior PGA Championship went to Davis Bryant of Aurora in the boys ranks and to Hailey Schalk of Erie in the girls division. Bryant became the first boys player to win consecutive Colorado Junior PGAs since Steven Kupcho in 2010 and ‘11. And Schalk became the first girl to repeat since Steven’s sister, Jennifer Kupcho, did the honors in 2012 and ‘13. Jennifer Kupcho, of course, recently won the women’s NCAA individual title.

Overall, Bryant is the fourth boy to win the Colorado Junior PGA twice in a row, while Schalk is the seventh girl. “To do this two years in a row is awesome and amazing. It’s a great feeling,” said Bryant, who was likely competing in his final JGAC major as he has conflicts with the remaining tournaments in 2018. “To play as consistently as I have and to win by four shots ... I was real motivated after last week when I got second place to Dillon (Stewart) at the AJGA. That motivated me to come here and take care of business, which I was able to do.” Sai Schalk: “It’s really cool to win two years in a row because that doesn’t happen very often. For me to do what Jennifer Kupcho did is really special.”

Junior Golf News Even more notably, both Bryant and Schalk have won the last four JGAC majors in which they’ve competed. “That’s pretty cool,” said Bryant. “It’s like a grand slam in a way. To win four (straight) that I’ve played in ... it hasn’t really sunk in yet. But I’m really happy I was able to get it done.” Schalk likewise relishes that feat. “I’m definitely proud of that accomplishment,” said the junior-to-be at Holy Family High School. “It’s cool to be able to win my last four because that just doesn’t really happen (often).” Adding even more to the significance of Bryant and Schalk’s victories on Wednesday, their dads -- Matt Bryant (Green Valley Ranch Golf Club) and Matt Schalk (Colorado National Golf Club) -- are Colorado PGA general managers, making their kids repeating in the Colorado Junior PGA all the more appropriate. On Wednesday, after taking an eight-stroke lead into the final round, Davis Bryant prevailed by four shots. And after leading by three after two rounds, Schalk emerged with a six-stroke victory. In both cases, it continued an early-season trend of relative routs in the top junior championships in Colorado. Last week in the AJGA Hale Irwin Colorado Junior, the boys margin of victory was six and the girls seven. And at last month’s girls state high school tournaments, the margins were seven (5A), six (3A) and, in the lone exception, one (4A). On a windy final day at Eisenhower GC, Bryant shot a 1-over-par 73 to post a 6-under 210 total. The 18-yearold, who will play his college golf at Colorado State University beginning in the fall, made two birdies and three bogeys on Wednesday. “Today was the hardest round I’ve played in a while,” Bryant said. “Knowing you have an eight-shot lead, and the last thing you want to do is blow the lead. It crept in my head a little last night. “But I love this golf course. I play real well here. I understand the greens and know where to miss it and where not to miss it. I did a really good job of that over the three days.” Cal McCoy of Highlands Ranch, a University of Denverbound golfer, crept within three strokes of Bryant with three holes left on Wednesday and checked in at 214 overall after closing with a 69. “I wanted to catch Davis, but I knew it was going to be very hard to do, especially with how well he can play,” McCoy said. “I just wanted to put some pressure on him and make him think a little more over some short putts and some drives. If I caught up to him, great. If I didn’t,

I knew second is, I guess, good enough. Even though you want to win, it’s tough when you’re eight back with one round left.” Jack Castiglia of Lakewood, who recently advanced to the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying, placed third at 221 after a final-round 73. In the girls division, the 16-year-old Schalk shot her second consecutive 77 to finish at 228. The two-time 3A state high school champion made 13 pars and five bogeys on Wednesday. Caroline Jordaan of Lakewood, the 2015 Colorado Junior PGA Champion, was runner-up at 234 as she sank a 10-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to edge out 2017 4A state high school champ Lauren Lehigh of Loveland. Jordaan posted a final-round 80 for a 234 total, while Lehigh placed third at 235 after a 79. “I definitely tried to come in first, but I struggled on the front nine a little bit,” said Jordaan, who will play golf at DU starting in 2019. “I tried to keep it together on the back to get in the top two.” In addition to the Colorado Junior PGA Championship titles being on the line on Wednesday, the top two boys finishers and the top two girls landed spots in the national Junior PGA Championship that will be held in Kentucky. The national girls tournament is set for July 9-12 at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington and the boys for July 31-Aug. 3 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville. Valhalla has hosted three PGA Championships and a Ryder Cup. Bryant and McCoy gained the boys berths and Schalk and Jordaan the girls. Bryant finished 14th in the 2017 national Junior PGA, while McCoy and Schalk missed the cut in their respecive tournaments. Jordaan missed the cut on her first trip to the national Junior PGA, in 2015. “I’m really excited,” she said. “I’m happy I ended up getting a spot because I didn’t play my best golf. I’m happy it worked out in the end.” Said McCoy: “It feels pretty good” to go to a national championship. “Whenever you’re playing for a bigger tournament, there’s always added pressure. This year I want to do a little better, but the first stage was to get into it, and I’m feeling pretty good.” Another Coloradan who has landed a spot in the national Junior PGA is Charlotte Hillary of Cherry Hills Village, who’s competing this week in the AJGA Rolex Girls Junior Championship in Park City, Utah.
