President’s Message
Uncertain Times Call for Unity and Communication Fellow PGA Members, First, I hope that you and your family are coping with the given circumstances. While we all have been affected by this pandemic, I hope that you have been able to stay healthy and take advantage of additional time with family. It is important to remember that our PGA family is also here to help during stressful times. In this unprecedented global crisis, uncertainty can add stress in many ways. Whether it be your employment situation, your spouse’s or that of the other staff that you employ, we are here for you. The Colorado PGA, in partnership with all 41 Sections and our National Office, is working diligently to provide resources to you. As a membership organization, we have many unique employment situations among our members. This can pose a challenge as we aim to help interpret and disseminate the onslaught of information that is put out on a daily basis. As the pandemic plays out in the coming months, rest assured that we will do our best to provide relevant information to our members. Please feel free to email or call with your questions and we will do our best to help you find the answer. Aside from the current challenges, I am always excited as we come out of winter and enter the spring. Although our spring operations will likely look much different than most, the grass is still turning green and the days are getting longer. As the seasons turn toward summer and we seek some normalcy in our lives, I believe that the game of golf will be positioned well to help everyone get outside, socialize (responsibly) and play the game we love so much. I want to thank you all in advance for all the great relationships that you have created as a PGA Professional. We know that people love to play golf, but it is the PGA Professional who keeps them coming back, who grows our game and protects our business. Please keep your enthusiasm for the game alive, share your passion however you can and try to see past the current situation. This too will pass. Thank you for the opportunity to serve, Ben Welsh, PGA President Colorado PGA Head Professional Frost Creek bwelsh@pga.com P | (970) 328-2326 C | (970) 688-0115

Carlton, Miller and O’Donnell Elected to Serve Colorado as Board of Directors Trio will serve from the Fall Meeting in 2020 through the Fall Meeting in 2023
T
hree members of the Colorado PGA were elected to serve three-year terms as members of the Colorado Board of Directors on Monday, April 6, during the Virtual Spring Business Meeting. Re-elected to a second term on the Board were Jim Miller, PGA, General Manager at Sonnenalp Club, and Mike O’Donnell, PGA, Director of Family & Morale, Welfare & Recreation at the United States Army Garrison Fort Carson, Colo. Joe Carlton, PGA, Head Professional at Legacy Ridge Golf Course, was elected to his first three-year term as a Director at Large and will be sworn in during the October 12 Fall Membership Meeting. “My thanks to each of our candidates who ran for the Board,” expressed Ben Welsh, PGA, President of the Colorado Section. “Electing our leadership is one of the most important things we do each spring, and it takes a special person to stand up and say I want to serve. I look forward to serving with each of these dedicated PGA Professionals.” Miller associated the acronym WAIT – Why am I talking? – with his first term on the Board. The first year is spent listening and taking it all in; you start to figure out how things work and where your talents might best fit in the second year; and then in the third year, you are plugged in and begin to feel like you can really contribute. Then, your term is up. His feelings of having more to contribute to the Section and its Membership drove his choice to run for re-election to the Board. “I’m so proud to serve this Section; and I’m especially proud to serve you, my fellow Colorado Section Golf Professions,” said Miler in his nomination video. “Our section is blessed to have a strong foundation that is built on passion and hard work. The efforts of the Section have allowed for it to be recognized as a national leader both in innovation and in the success of its membership. Although there are storms around us right now, our foundation is strong. We will not be moved. Thank you for your faith in my ability to serve you, the Members.” Asking for the Memberships consideration, O’Donnell shared his history of having worked in most capacities at private, public, military and resort golf facilities. He brings a well-balanced, well-rounded perspective to the Board that represents a good cross-section of the membership. His decision to run for a second term was based on the outstanding leadership team in place that is dedicated to improving the lives of our membership and leading by example with growth of the game initiatives.

“Thank you for re-electing me to serve a second term on your Board, it is an honor and privilege to do so, and one that I do not take lightly,” said Master PGA Professional O’Donnell. “I’m really looking forward to additional engagement with our Membership over the coming years and will be working hard to help “build the bench” with respect to succession planning for our Section. By prioritizing and developing an outstanding pipeline of potential Committee and Board Members willing and able to continue leading us forward into the future, we will ensure the continued success of both our Colorado Section and our National Association with respect to effectively “Serving the Member and Growing the Game!” Admitting that he had never really thought about running for the Board, Carlton was inspired to do so following the 2019 Colorado Fall Membership Meeting after listening to the stories of Alan Abrams and Bob Doyle. Believing that he will gain more than he will quite possibly be able to give, Carlton is passionate about aiming to improve the position of the PGA Member in the golf business and is anxious to do his best to give at least as much as he receives. “I want thank the Members of the Colorado Section for allowing me to serve and to serve during these challenging times,” comments Carlton. “I am very excited and honored! It is my goal to be a voice for all of you. I look forward to getting started, but in the meantime, I hope that everyone stays healthy and safe.”

Executive Director’s Message
We Win Tomorrow by What We Do Today My Fellow Colorado PGA Professionals,
It is my hope and prayer that you and your families are all doing well during this extraordinary time. I’m so glad to be alive with all the wonderful technology we have available to us. In the mist of this storm we are currently in, I take great comfort with the numerous ways we can communicate with each other. This past weekend we taught my 88-year-old father-in-law how to join us on a Google Hangouts Meet Video Call, and this past Monday, we conducted our very first Colorado PGA Spring Membership Meeting virtually with 345 of you in attendance. Even under our Governor’s “Stay at Home” order, we are very blessed to be able to connect with the people we care about in numerous ways.
Eddie Ainsworth, PGA CEO/Executive Director Colorado PGA eainsworth@pgahq.com
As we go through this unprecedented time in our lives, our goal is to stay connected with our Colorado PGA Members. On Colorado PGA.com, you can find our COVID-19 Resources page with considerable amounts of information to assist you. Additionally, we will continue with weekly Webinars to help keep you informed, as well as PODCASTs to add tools to your toolbox. Please know that we are here to assist you in any way we can. If you cannot find something you’re looking for or need assistance on navigating this ever-changing environment, please do not hesitate to call on us. If we cannot help you directly, I’m confident we can connect you with someone who can. It’s times like these that we need leaders to step up in our communities, because we can win tomorrow by what we do today. First and foremost, we need to take care of our Team. We all have a Team. Whether it be our family, the people we work with or our friends, we all have a Team. One of our responsibilities as leaders is to mitigate stress, and whether you believe it or not, people can be under extreme stress going through a crisis like this. So please allow me to encourage you to Share Information with your Team. Sharing information establishes communication and trust. Be sure to Connect with your Team on a regular basis. Since working from home, we have established daily Video Team Calls. Connecting with others can help prevent people from feeling isolated and alone. •
8
Recognize Limits of your Team – Stress can diminish people’s ability to process complex information. In times like these,
The SUMMIT
Colorado PGA News remember to repeat whatever is important and over-communicate. •
Encourage your Team to Maintain Physical Resilience. When people take care of themselves physically, they can handle stress better. Prioritize sleep. Encourage good nutrition. Get regular exercise.
•
Maintain Psychological Resilience. Using mental resilience skills can help people manage stress and stay strong.
•
Normalize Stress. It’s important to acknowledge the impact of stress, letting team members feel more connected and less emotionally isolated. This is uncharted territory.
•
Seize the Moment. Leaders can reframe this moment as a critical opportunity for the entire team to contribute to the shared mission of finding solutions.
•
Control the Controllable. Reduce stress and save energy by focusing efforts on what can be controlled and accepting what can’t be controlled.
•
Finally, Take the Long View. This isn’t a one-time process. Pace yourself and your team for a marathon.
Remember to be kind to yourself and your Team. By taking care of ourselves and our Team, we can be ready to win tomorrow! We find ourselves in an unfamiliar place, allow me to encourage you to be still, stand firm and look for a familiar presence. Everything we need is on the other side of fear that wishes to cripple us. The game of golf will be well positioned to provide a much-needed respite to our communities, so we must do our part to be ready! Stay Healthy, Stay Safe and please do not hesitate to call anyone of us on Your Team – Colorado PGA. We’d love to assist you in any way we can, and it would be great to talk to you. All the Best.

Changes Coming to Allow Members to Cope with Impact of COVID-19 MSR Cycle, Acceptable Progress, PGA Golf Management University Students and Life Long Learning
W
e are all living in a different world than we were a month ago, a week ago, even a day ago. Each day begins with the updated news of the coronavirus spread. We are faced with the reality that many elements of our life are now restricted. For many golf professionals, our courses have been shut down, with no idea when our lives will return to “normal.” We are truly living in strange times indeed. One of my biggest concerns in all this are the members who may have been laid off, may have lost their jobs and may be isolated. We, as PGA Members and Associates, are a strong community. I encourage each of you to reach out to fellow Members and Associates and share your compassion and your kindness. Lend a sense of calm in this daily onslaught of discouraging and frightening news. Be there to support each other. In the end, we will come out better and stronger for the experience. Ron Rawls, PGA District 9 Director PGA of America Head Professional Crane Creek CC
As a PGA Member, we have resources that can help you through these difficult times. These resources are available on PGA.org, and include Financial Disaster Relief for illness, MAP program for assistance and links to multiple resources including employment, best practices, articles, legislation and updates from health departments from each state. Please visit PGA.org and check out these resources that can assist you and your fellow golf professionals. Many of you have had, and some may still have, questions about your PGA dues. PGA. org has some outstanding clarification on how National and Section dues will be handled this year. If after reading this you still have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me or Eddie Ainsworth in relation to the options available to pay Colorado Section dues. The PGA of America, due to its tax status, is limited in what we can do regarding dues and dues payments. I want to bring you up-to-date on a few determinations the PGA Officers Committee made recently, which were supported by the Board of Directors: MSR Cycle - Extend the MSR cycle deadline from June 15, 2021, to June 15, 2022, for all Members. This is due to a number of MSR activity opportunities – meetings, education, tournaments, player development – which could be affected by postponement or cancellations. Additionally, this relieves pressure on Sections and Members to conduct or take part in these activities during this unprecedented time of uncertainty. Acceptable Progress - Extend the Acceptable Progress deadlines for all PGA Associates by one year. As travel to the PGA Education Center is currently curtailed, PGA Education staff is exploring online opportunities, and there is uncertainty of testing sites remaining open. This provides flexibility to Associates in regard to meeting their deadlines. PGA Golf Management University Students - PGA Education Staff will work with the Universities directly regarding any needed accommodations within the Criteria and Standards.

The Colorado Section and the PGA of America continue their charitable commitment to higher education by providing scholarships to golfers and non-golfers alike. Your Wildly Important Goals and Learn by Learning are Focus of The Elevation Podcast Series The interview, the mixing, the uploading and the publishing have all been completed. The only step left is for you, our Colorado PGA Members, to click the play button and listen The Elevation Podcast Series. “This has been years in the making,” says Patrick Salva, staff liaison for the Education Committee. “Through the leadership of the Board of Directors and the direction from the Education Committee, we have been working on this idea of creating a podcast go serve as a digital education tool for our Members for quite some time.” Fittingly named ~ The Elevation Podcast Series, ~ the podcast will connect subject-matter experts both in and out of the golf industry to elevate the learning experience for our golf community. These weekly podcasts will range from 30-60 minutes in length and are meant to be engaging and designed to make sure your time is well spent. The guest speaker for the inaugural episode of The Elevation Podcast Series was Chris McChesney, Global Practice Leader of Execution for Franklin Covey and co-author of The 4 Disciples of Execution. “I got really entrenched into this one problem of how teams and organizations execute a strategy that requires a high degree of human engagement, human buy-in or change of behavior,” McChesney says during the podcast. “This one problem turned out to be an extraordinarily challenging topic and one that I have worked on for the last 18 years.

“The 4DX management concept has been successful because it doesn’t try to do everything. It is a very specific approach to achieve that bottle neck in your operation; that one thing that is driving you nuts. Normally, and almost without exception, that one thing is wrapped around a change in human behavior,” chuckles McChesney. Many of you were introduced to Trevor Ragan of Train Ugly when he was the keynote speaker at the 2018 Colorado PGA Spring Business Meeting. Ragan highlighted the second podcast where he continued discussing his passion for learning. “Science says that pretty much anyone can get better at pretty much any skill. That’s amazing,” says Ragan. “While you are learning, you are improving the machinery in your brain that controls learning for everything else. So, if I’m a more active learner, not only do I acquire new skills but I’m becoming a better learning in the process, which is going to help me be more efficient while learning new skills.”
A lot to take in? Here’s the short version ~ You become a better learner by learning! West Chapter Virtual Spring Meeting Moved to April 23 Candidates Needed for Board Election Dear Colorado West Chapter PGA Members, I sincerely hope and pray that all our PGA Professionals, their families, staff and golfers stay healthy and get through this pandemic. A few weeks ago, I played at Battlement Mesa and Redlands Mesa and the coronavirus was just starting to get our attention. I admit to being a little cavalier about the concern and I sure didn’t realize the potential impact it would have on our business in the very near future. As we all know now, it has and will change how we do things for some time, maybe forever to some extent. The impressive thing is how quickly our Colorado golf professionals have come together to share information and adapt to serve their facilities. With golf being in such a gray area when it comes to restrictions imposed by our local, state and federal governments, it has certainly been a challenge. Congratulations to our 2019 West Chapter Award Winners. As a West Chapter Board Member for the last several years, I find this to be one of the most rewarding parts of this experience. We all work hard to be the best golf professional that we can be, and it is very meaningful to be recognized by our peers. In the process of selecting our award winners, I really enjoy learning more about what our members are doing in their positions to elevate the game of golf. I would also like to commend our West Chapter Board of Directors for their role in the selection process. I want you all to know that the Board puts a lot of effort and input into selecting our winners.

Colorado PGA REACH Foundation News
Besides Golf, PGA Professionals Keith Stilwell and Corey Zoller also Enjoy Colorado’s Outdoor Lifestyle I
n an effort to always provide a leg-up to its membership, the Colorado PGA has replicated the PGA of America by implementing a LEAD program in our own Section. Eleven members make of the Class of 2019-2020 and are a part of this two-year leadership program. In the February issue of The SUMMIT we introduced a column where we introduce you, the membership, to the members of the Colorado PGA LEAD class. This month, we are excited to feature PGA Professionals Keith Stilwell and Corey Zoller, who both enjoy the outdoor lifestyle Colorado offers. Stilwell is currently the PGA General Manager at Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club. He was recognized as the Colorado PGA Award Winner of the 2019 Public Merchandiser of the Year. Stilwell is serving his second year as a Director on the Colorado Board of Directors. Born and raised in Northern Colorado, Stilwell greatly benefited from our State’s excellent junior golf programs. He finds being able to help support the Section and facilities that he grew up calling home very special. When not on the golf course, he enjoys spending time with his daughter, Penelope (5), and wife, Elsa. They love everything Colorado has to offer. Hiking, mountain biking and motocross are a big part of his life. 1) What is the most valuable thing you have learned since joining the CO PGA LEAD class? My time as part of the LEAD cohort has been a bit unconventional as I was elected to the Colorado Section’s Board of Directors shortly after starting LEAD. However, being a part of LEAD and learning about the key elements of a high functioning board or team has helped provide key insights for my time with the Section Board. 2) How do you see this helping you in the future? While I have found value in the educational topics that have been covered through LEAD, the part that I see being the most beneficial to my future is the networking opportunity and relationships we develop. It’s no secret that we are in a relationship business and I really appreciate any chance to build friendships with fellow golf professionals. Zoller is currently serving as a First Assistant at Colorado Golf Club, which hosted the 2019 USGA Mid-Amateur. He also serves the Section as a member of the Education Committee. Originally from Abington, Penn., just outside of Philadelphia, Zoller was the first in his family to play golf at the age of 14 when he joined the high school golf team. It was during his first job at a golf course where he was inspired by a young PGA Professional that he could see a future as a golf professional himself. That vision guided his education and job experience, bringing him to Colorado in 2017. Most recently, Zoller completed the PGA.Coach certification and plans to complete his Specialized PGA Certification in Teaching and Coaching this Fall, with the goal of continuing through to the Certified and Master Professional Programs.

Colorado PGA REACH Foundation News Zoller and his fiancé Brie purchased a home in Aurora in 2018 and thoroughly enjoy all that Colorado has to offer. Outside of golf, his hobbies include playing hockey, hunting, fishing, conquering 14ers and snowboarding. 1)What is the most valuable thing you have learned since joining the CO PGA LEAD class? The most valuable thing that I have learned is how the Colorado PGA’s existing Section leaders are setting the groundwork for a bright future in both the Colorado Section and the golf industry as a whole. Programs like PGA LEAD are giving young PGA Golf Professionals the tools to become more involved at a Section level earlier in their careers. This education will prepare future Colorado Section leaders to effectively carryout the PGA of America’s goals and to expand the influence of the Colorado Section in the future. 2) How do you see this helping you in the future? The PGA LEAD Program feels like a “head start” on gaining the valuable experience necessary to develop an educated voice at the Section and Association Level. Within the LEAD team, we are encouraged to understand how the PGA of America prepares for the future and we are provided the skills to effectively mold that future. There is no question that my participation in the PGA LEAD program will pay dividends going forward in the golf business.

If you could have a dream foursome, who would it be and why? We’ve created PGAJrLeague.com/Community to house some of our favorite games, activities and videos. This page contains content such as word searches, card games and crossword puzzles, and will be continually updated so you can share them with your players and their families. This resource page also includes some short videos to keep your juniors engaged and learning golf while at home.

PGA Jr. League Postpones Season Until May 10 PGA Jr. League stands for togetherness - bringing friends, families and communities together around the great game of golf with their PGA and LPGA Coaches. Celebrations include high-fives, team cheers, large galleries, pizza parties and more. Social connection is the heart and soul of the program, and it’s why PGA Jr. League made the following announcement on March 18, 2020: In light of announcements from the CDC and the White House, and to stay true to our values of safety and togetherness, we are aligning with the CDC’s recommended timeframe and postponing the PGA Jr. League season until May 10. We look at this similarly to a weather delay and are taking a number of proactive steps to ensure a successful season while we wait to get our teams back on the course. These include: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Encouraging players to continue registering for the season. Exploring team kit distribution options to help ensure uniforms arrive by your season start date. Exploring possible modifications (if necessary) to the postseason to maximize the timeframe for local league play. Encouraging local leagues to participate in our Fall Rec Season so there are opportunities to play for as long as the weather in your area allows. Continuing a flexible refund policy.
