Spring Means New Beginnings!

I

t’s Springtime!! Each year I get excited about the hope that comes with Spring. The grass is starting to grow and turn green. The flower bulbs are starting to push up out of the ground, the sun rising is just a little extra special, and of course if you’re a golfer the excitement that builds around The Masters!! It is with this excitement and anticipation that our customers come to the golf course each and every day. They come looking for that perfect day with their friends, family, business associates. What a joy it is to be in this business! People come to us looking for fun, relaxation, and quality time with others!!! Yes, golf is a business, but what a great business it is. We all have business goals, budgets and numbers to hit. We have to worry about the weather, both good and bad. Are we getting enough rain to keep our water costs down and our courses in good shape or are we getting to much poor weather to keep our customers away? Each of us have our own separate situations that we have to deal with. Each of us are unique and different individuals, and we manage different types of businesses within the golf business. Our goal and mission here at the Colorado Section PGA is to help meet your individual needs and assist you in any way we can so you can provide that perfect day for your customers. The theme for our Spring Meeting was “#GetInWhereYouFitIn”. If you’re not certain about what type of programs, help and support we offer you as a PGA Member & Apprentice, please give us a call and we would be glad to come to your facility and sit down with you to discuss how we might be able to help you provide that perfect day. Springtime is all about new beginnings. It is going to be another great year here in the Colorado Section where we (yes, we. Let’s all get out and play more this year), along with our customers, get to play golf on God’s most beautiful gardens. Where the every day ordinary people, the men and women Colorado PGA Professionals, do extraordinary things to provide that perfect day!! As always, please let us know if we can be of any service or assistance to you. Or if you just need a friend to play nine holes of golf with you at your facility or here at Bear Dance some afternoon, give one of us here a call. We would love to end our day in a perfect way by spending time with you. All the Best!

Best Practices Pinehurst Country Club | PGA Head Professional Kevin Vena Pinehurst Country Club is one of the 17 Certified Junior Facilities in the section and one of the ways they encourage appropriate-level junior play is with junior tees and their awesome junior-designed scorecard. They hold a design contest each year for the cover and the concept allows juniors to keep score, monitoring development from kid-friendly yardages while focusing on a kid-centered theme.

Trent Wearner Golf Academy | PGA Instructor Phil Linares

Philip Linares, PGA Professional at The Trent Wearner Golf Academy is excited for Team Golf! The instruction focus at the academy has been primarily on developing skill through clinics and private lessons. Linares is using the Team Golf concept to develop an instruction program that is based solely on PLAYING. All the clinics will be held on the practice holes and will focus on learning “How to Play Golf including rules/etiquette, on-course strategy, and mental preparation. This is just one of the many ways instructors can creatively use the TEAM Golf Model.

Player Development Corner

Keith Soriano, PGA | Player Develeopment Director

Player Development Update

The season is upon us, and that means it’s our chance to take up the charge once again to drive new and lapsed players into this great game. As you plan your player development business for the 2014 season, I urge you to consider a seemingly small, yet very significant mindset change; Lesson Programs vs. Consumer Products. Often, the vernacular of our industry is to call all of our player development efforts “Programs”; as in “lesson program, beginner clinic program, Get Golf Ready Program”. While this is a common practice, I would encourage you to consider viewing them, if only internally, as player development “Products”. Such a simple mindset shift can have profound effects on your player development business. Programs often focus on systems, while Products focus on the consumer. For instance; if your product at your facility is your golf course, the program for using the product is your reservation and starting procedure. While those programs are important, the consumer is primarily concerned with the product you offer. Thinking about your player development offerings as Consumer Products keeps your whole team consumer-focused. Being consumer focused in the development of your products; and meeting the consumer on their terms can lead to the development of long-term consumers, Members, and fans. To schedule a one on one meeting with your Section’s Director of Player Development to see if your products are consumer-focused, call or email Keith Soriano, PGA at 720.841.1006 or ksoriano@pgahq.com

Four Members Reach Certification in CPP Golf Ops Three Colorado PGA Professionals have taken the steps to become recognized as Certified Professionals in the area of Golf Operations, an honor bestowed on only 3% of the entire PGA Membership. The Colorado Section PGA offered its professionals a unique opportunity to complete the course work required for Certification in Golf Operations in a dynamic group learning environment over the course of 11 weeks starting back in December of 2013. The class was an opportunity to enhance their skills as a PGA Professional, and to do so in a group setting that will allow for the sharing of best practices, innovative ideas, and fellowship. The course was highlighted by guest speakers who are experts in their areas including George Kahrhoff, PGA, Clayton Cole, PGA, and Conrad Miller from our partners at KBS Golf Shafts. The course covered the full scope of Golf Operations to include Retail Management. The Golf Operations portion included an overview of responsibilities for golf management and activities such as player development, tournament management, tee reservation services, professional shop services, golf car fleet management, Rules interpretations, and an overview of golf course maintenance. The Retail Management modules covered the management of merchandising for green-grass golf shops and off-course retail shops to include purchasing, inventory control, marketing and promotions, and displays and modeling. The following four PGA Professionlas from the Golf Operations class have completed the certification process: - Rick Ellefson, PGA Head Professional | The Club at Pradera - Joe Pinson, PGA Head Professional | Overland Park Golf Course - Randy Myers, PGA Head Professional | Foothills Golf Course - Cameron Morton, PGA Assistant Professional | The Ranch Country Club

Colorado PGA Leads Entire PGA in CPP Program

The Colorado PGA sits atop the list when it comes to the PGA of America Certified Professional Program (CPP). Not only have we been the first Section to offer the program in a classroom style, we lead the entire PGA of America in having 7.1% of our Members certified. And while that number does reflect our success with the program locally, 5.5% of all PGA Members who have been certified across the PGA of America come from the Colorado Section. Below is a list of all of the Colorado PGA Professionals who have completed the program in both CPP and CPP 2.0. Employment Update When asked to speak at PGA Section meetings, Employment Consultants continually remind you and remind you of the resources available on?? DING- DING- the answer is: pgalinks.com!! One of the new resources you can find on the PGA Employment page is the “Employer Guide for PGA Members- Being a Successful Manager Can Advance your Career”. This comprehensive guide is an excellent document to enhance your skills as the leader of your staff. I know many of you pride yourself in your leadership capabilities. Your staff looks up to you and responds to you in a favorable manner. Let’s review some ideas that could benefit both you and your staff as 2014 gets under way and review the traits of an outstanding employer. The first area to look at is recruiting and hiring the best employees. Do you develop job descriptions which are clearly defined expectations? Do you incentivize your employees? What do you look for in the cover letter/resume? How do you conduct your interviews? What about background checks? The second area is the development and supervision of employees. How long is your “leash”? Do you train and attempt to motivate your team? Do you do evaluations? Are you up-to-date on the Wage and Hour laws? Is your workplace free of bias and discrimination? The third area deals with mentoring. What is your responsibility? Do you dread or enjoy the risk/ reward in developing this relationship with your assistants? Did you have a mentor whom you consider to be the “reason” you are where you are today? How are you viewed today by you staff? How do you want to be remembered? I know all I did was ask questions in this article- that was intentional! I want you to review the guide and make the effort to find the answers. Start the year in 2014 with commitment to being the best employer possible. Please call me with any questions or share ideas you use in this all-important arena. You do make an impact- is it a positive one? Bruce Lubach, PGA, is the PGA of America Employment Consultant for the Colorado, Iowa, Midwest, Minnesota and Nebraska Sections. He can be reached at: blubach@pgahq.com or (402) 261-3604.
