For 27 years, Sprague served as General Manager and Director of Golf at Malone (N.Y.) Golf Club, his hometown course, where he was involved with all aspects of the facility’s operations. In 2016, Sprague was named Managing Director of Liberty National and is now a member of the New Jersey PGA Section. Keffer Captures Section Championship G
eoff Keffer knew he had his work cut out for himself coming into the final round of the 2016 Colorado PGA Professional Championship at Cherry Creek Country Club on Wednesday. Keffer was twoshots behind Caine Fitzgerald, the current leader of the Dow Finsterwald Player of the Year race who just happened to have won the 2012 Colorado PGA Professional Championship; the last time it was held at Cherry Creek Country Club.
started off with a bogey on one.”
Keffer did his work during the final round by firing a tournament best five-under-par 67 to earn a comeback victory and his first ever title in the Colorado PGA Professional Championship.
Mike Northern, PGA Life Member and recent winner of the 2016 Colorado Senior PGA Professional Championship who was playing with Keffer and Fitzgerald mounted a charge by making birdie at the par-4 12th and then again at the long par-3 13th. At that point Northern sat two strokes behind Keffer in his bid to win the Section Championship for a second time, having won in 2006.
“This is our biggest tournament and was the only one missing from my playing resume in the section,” noted Keffer. “To be able to add my name to the trophy and be in the same club as all those great champions and people means everything.” If Keffer was looking to make a charge out of the gates, he started his final round off on the wrong foot. Keffer bogeyed his first hole of the final round as Fitzgerald opened up a quick and commanding three shot lead. “I started the day two (strokes) back and after bogeying the first, I was quickly three back” Keffer said. “I didn’t let it get to me because some of my best rounds have

Keffer rebounded from the opening bogey to birdie the par-5 second and went on to post an opening nine of two-under-par 34 and opened up a one-stroke lead at the turn over Fitzgerald. That’s where the round took a drastic change. Fitzgerald bogeyed three of the first five holes on the back nine and fell out of contention.
Using the stretch of 14- 16, consisting of two par 5s and a drivable par-4, Keffer seemingly slammed the door on Northern and the rest of the field by playing that stretch three-under-par. “My plan going into the day was to attack the par 5’s and the drivable par-4 15th,” Keffer noted after the round. While he had a commanding lead at that point, it wasn’t all smooth sailing coming down the stretch. Keffer misjudged his tee shot at the long par-3 17th hole and
“I hit a perfect pitch and got that up and down,” Keffer said of the shot. “That was huge!”

Keffer went on to make a routine par at the difficult finishing hole, knocking in a routine 2 foot putt to post a tournament total six-under-par 210 to win his first Colorado PGA Professional Championship.
Doug Rohrbaugh, PGA Director of Golf at Ironbridge Golf Club, looking to make history by winning his fourth consecutive championship finished tied for tenth place at four-over-par 221.
Finishing in second place was Northern who fired a closing 69 to finish at three-under-par 213. Ari Papadopoulos, PGA Head Professional at the Norman Course at Red Sky Golf Club took third place (74-71-69214).
Following the conclusion of play, it was announced that the 2017 Colorado PGA Professional Championship will be held at the Fazio Course at Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, CO.

Andonian Wins West Chapter Championship Valley CC Member Becomes First Female to Win a Colorado PGA Major Championship
S
herry Andonian, PGA Instructor from Valley Country Club had already chalked up a pretty important first this year when she became the first female to compete in the CoBank Colorado Open at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club. She trumped that by winning the 2016 Colorado PGA West Chapter Championship to become the first female to win a Colorado PGA major championship! “It means a great deal to me,” noted Andonian following the awards ceremony. “We have some great players in this section and I have a lot of respect for them. I am honored to pave the way for future female professionals. The response I have received has been very positive and supporting from both men and women.” Andonian began the final round in a four way tie for first after firing an opening one-under-par 71. Also tied for first going into the final round were Blake Sharamitaro, Mike Northern, and Kyle Voska. Voska, a PGA Instructor from The Links Golf Course who was paired with Andonian mounted an early charge by posting three consecutive birdies but a triple-bogey 7 on the par-4 7th hole derailed his early hopes of taking over the lead. While nobody else mounted a significant charge, Andonian relied on a strong driver and a steady putter on posting an opening three-under-par 33. “I drove the ball exceptionally well and I putted very well,” she noted. “I switched putting styles and putters on Sunday, different than I have ever done in the past. It
was nice to make putting fun again and have confidence standing over the ball.” Andonian didn’t let up as she birdied the par-4 10th hole to open up a four shot lead. While she bogeyed the par-4 13th, Andonian answered that with a birdie at the par-4 16th and was never really challenged for the lead. “(This win) ranks very high for me! I might put a little more pressure on myself since I am the only female in a lot of our events,” Sherry noted. “The applause and cheers when my score went up on the scoreboard was so incredible and something that I will treasure for the rest of my life!” Voska finished tied for second place with Sharamitaro, PGA Assistant Professional from Lake Arbor Golf Course. Both players fired rounds of 71-71 for a two-under-par 142 total. Finishing in fourth place was Brandon Bingaman, an Apprentice Professional from the Bridges Golf and Country Club who posted a one-under-par 143. Other notable finishers included Doug Rohrbaugh, PGA Director of Golf at Ironbridge Golf Club who was looking to win his ninth West Chapter Championship. Rohrbaugh finished tied for sixth with a two-day total of three-overpar, 143. Geoff Keffer and Caine Fitzgerald, the top two players in the OMEGA Dow Finsterwald Player of the Year race finished t13th and 16th respectively.

Keffer Takes Third Player of the Year Title In A Row Northern, Grady Win Titles for the First Time
T
hree players were crowned Players of the Year after the annual Season Championship was held on Monday, October 3, 2016 at The Pinery Country Club in Parker, CO. All three players earned their season-long awards following victories in Colorado PGA Major Championships. Geoff Keffer, PGA Assistant Professional at the PGA Learning Center earned the OMEGA Dow Finsterwald Player of the Year title. The victory was the third in a row for Keffer and his fourth in the last five years. Keffer most notably won the 2016 Colorado PGA Professional Championship at Cherry Creek Country Club in September. He also finished second in the Colorado PGA Match Play Championship which wrapped up recently at Meridian Golf Club. In all, Keffer posted five individual victories throughout 2016 to earn the Section’s highest honor. Keffer beat out Caine Fitzgerald, PGA Assistant Professional from Meadow Hills Golf Course in the last weeks of the season. Mike Northern is no stranger to being named Player of the Year. While this is his first senior title, he was the Colorado PGA Dow Finsterwald Player of the Year three times (1998, 2005 and 2009). Northern, a PGA Life Member was crowned champion of the 2016 Colorado Senior PGA Professional Championship when he fired
an impressive 10-under-par 134 at Indian Peaks Golf Couse in Lafayette, CO. He followed that victory with a second place finish at the Colorado PGA Professional Championship and rounded out the year posting t6 and t3 finishes at the West Chapter Championship and the Season Championship, respectively. While the Apprentice Player of the Year didn’t play in a lot of events in 2016, he sure made them count when he did. University of Colorado Men’s Golf team Assistant Coach Pat Grady played in only four events this year but amassed 2,298 points. He was victorious in the National Car Rental Colorado Assistant Professional Championship in August and earned a significant amount of points for strong finishes in the Wyoming State Open (tied for 8th) and the Rocky Mountain Open (tied for 8th). All three winners will be recognized at the 2016 Colorado PGA Special Awards Gala to be held Friday, November 4, 2016 at Colorado Golf Club.

Papadopoulos, the PGA Head Professional at the Norman Course at Red Sky Golf Club posted eight birdies during Four Ball stroke play event where he partnered with three assistant professionals; Brian Zeigler, Justin Blomberg and Liz McCabe. Papadopoulos and Zeigler came out victorious in the event as they posted an 11-under-par 61. He and Blomberg posted a 4th place finish while he and McCabe finished tied for fifth place. Coming in second place during the event was the team from Colorado Golf Club made up of PGA Head Professional Graham Cliff and Assistant Professional Anthony Vitale. The duo fired an eight-under-par 64. Red Sky Golf Club wasn’t the only club to place three times at the top of the leaderboard. Barry Milstead, PGA Head Professional at Valley Country Club partnered with Somin Lee (tied for second), Sherry Andonian, PGA (tied for fifth) and Dennis Murray (eighth). All of these teams plus the team from Eaton Country Club (Rick Cole, PGA and Tom Hensel) advanced to the four-hole shootout following the completion of play. While each team made a strong challenge to the team from Red Sky Golf Club, Papadopoulos and Zeigler came out victorious in the shootout as well.

Zeigler has been on a hot streak lately and partnered with the Head Professional from the Norman Course, Ari Papadopoulos to win both the Championship and the Shootout at the 2016 Pro-Assistant. Check out what equipment he used to play so well!
I have been on staff with PXG since January 2016 and I have been a certified fitter for them since May of 2016. I choose to be on staff with PXG because they are leaders and innovators in the golf club industry and I wanted to be a part of it.
I play the PXG 0811 9 degree driver I feel that it is the strongest club in my bag. I can hit it long and straight. I feel that it gives me a real advantage over the competition.
I play with a 34 PXG Brandon putter. It is an answer style putter. I choose the Brandon over all the other PXG models because it gave me the best feel.

PGA of America Employment Update Make the Decision to be More Inclusive!
I
recently attended (along with Eddie Ainsworth, your Executive Director) a meeting at UCCS for the PGA Golf Management Student Club. I was asked to give a short talk and gladly accepted. The students ran a very professional meeting with two vibrant, talented women serving as President and Vice-President of their club. I was impressed! This brings me to this point. How many of you attended the 2015 G4 Summit at The Broadmoor? Sandy Cross, the PGA of America Senior Director of Diversity and Inclusion, gave a stellar presentation entitled, “Generational Attributes and Diversity and Inclusion”. Although this was more than a year ago, it still resonates with me and I want to tip my cap to the Colorado Section for your efforts in this area. Your section takes great pride in being a leader in many initiatives to “serve the member and grow the game”. BUT….. What are you doing? Are you intentionally doing focused planning to include women, minorities, people who may not look like you, as part of your staff? Are you committed to growing the game for women at your club? Have you been diligent to try to change the “look” at your club and embrace the challenges that come with this?
As your PGA Employment Consultant, I would be remiss if I do not challenge you at times. Please know; this is not an indictment against any of you. As stated, this section and many, many of the PGA members are at the forefront of this issue. However, do not be that person who sits on the sidelines and observes what others are doing. Jump in! Do the planning and make an effort to be more inclusive. Maybe, just maybe, you facility will thank you for your efforts! Bruce Lubach, PGA, is the PGA of America Employment Consultant for the Colorado, Southwest and Sun Country Sections. He can be reached at: blubach@pgahq.com or (623) 243-9199.

ave you started the Certified Professional Program but have yet to finish it? Did you attend one of the four in-class programs offered by the Colorado PGA but need a little help to get over the hump and complete the program? The Colorado PGA will be hosting three CPP Completion consultation days this winter to help you do just that.

I want each of you to think about 2017 and what that is going to look like at your facility. Are you going to accept the status quo? A wise man once told me, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.”
During a one hour appointment with Keith Soriano, PGA Members will have the opportunity to gain a full understating of their current status within the program and map out a plan for completion. Valley Country Club and Colorado National Golf Club have signed on to host the first two of these meetings, and Keith Soriano will begin taking one hour reservations as soon as the dates are finalized. Keep an eye on the weekly Chip Shots for updates. If your club in the West Denver area is interested in being a host site for a consult day, please contact Keith at ksoriano@pgahq.com.

Revenue Workshop on the Horizon C
ome join us as we explore the role that instruction and coaching plays in enhancing income, increasing job security and generating incremental rounds and revenue for PGA Professionals and their respective facilities. This winter, the Colorado PGA will be hosting a Revenue Workshop presented by the PGA’s Senior Director of Player Development, Mike O’Donnell.
The workshop will take place on Tuesday, January 10th, 2017, so mark your calendars now! We are in the process of securing a location for the one-day workshop. Stay tuned to Chip Shots for updates or email Keith Soriano, PGA at ksoriano@pgahq.com for more information. The workshops focus on three primary take-a-ways:
• Increased job satisfaction and security. • Increased Income. • Job creation. The agenda will include reflecting on and challenging long-held assumptions regarding the importance of player development, the consumer’s motivations, and the role of the PGA Professional at any facility. We will review applicable marketing principals and marketing tactics which will empower Professionals to inspire and engage with any player, regardless of their ability or relative position on the consumer pathway. Attendees will engage in an in-depth dive into structured player development programming that can address any type of consumer, with specific emphasis on the recreational
20
player, engaged player, and committed player. Finally, those in attendance will receive an introduction into quantifying and measuring the financial and facility impact of your teaching and coaching activities by understanding the key revenue drivers and utilizing available resources to codify that information. Members have said the greatest benefits of attending were an increased awareness of their value, how to calculate it, and how to report it. In some cases this has led to feedback such as, “This was a life changing experience. I now have a much better working environment, a better relationship with my GM and we are working together to drive customer satisfaction. This has led to an increase in revenue, profitability and more income for me. We’ve also hired additional staff to support our expanding golf program. Every PGA member and their owner/GM should attend this workshop. I can’t thank you enough for this.”

Youth Golf Colorado Making a Difference in Roaring Fork Valley O
n a beautiful Saturday morning in Glenwood Springs more than 70 kids ages 3 to 15 came to a park to learn how to golf, for free! Youth Golf Colorado, a registered 50-c-3 started by Steve VanDyke, PGA Head Professional at Aspen Glen Club had hoped for a good turnout for this inaugural event but had no idea it would be so successful with limited resources for marketing and little free time for planning. The mission of Youth Golf Colorado is to provide professional coaching and golf instructional programs to Youth particularly in western Colorado that might not otherwise receive such. YoGoCo's primary focus is to provide access to golf instruction, equipment and open space for kids to play and learn golf. A grant from Colorado PGA REACH to compensate instructors was the catalyst to establishing this new nonprofit that is striving to get golf areas into public parks. By using Birdieballs YoGoCo feels that kids should be able to show up at a park to play golf with their friends and family just like baseball, soccer or any other sport. In the future YoGoCo plans to provide PGA programming like Colorado PGA Golf in Schools, PGA Jr League as well as its own seasonal club rentals and more Golf in the Park events. To provide these services YoGoCo is looking to raise an estimated $25,000 for initial startup equipment and coach commissions. Follow Youth Golf Colorado on Facebook or email youthgolfcolorado@gmail.com for more information or to contribute.

JGAC Members Compete at CHSAA State Championships T
he 2016 CHSAA State Golf Championships were held recently and members of the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado were on display!
These state championships are a true look into what the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado does for young players around the state. Only 2 players out of the top 34 for all fields combined are not JGAC members. This means only 6% of the top finishers in all the CHSAA State competitions do not regularly play in our tournaments. The JGAC will continue to market the programs that are available and hopefully make the participation grow. There were 251 High School golfers competing in tournaments this week. What a great place to help grow the game!
