President’s Message
Welcome to 2021 Happy to Have you Here! Fellow PGA Professionals,
I
f you are like me, we are in February, going on June. Thanks to Mother Nature and the lack of snow, we have play, lessons, fittings, etc… with guests having a continued sense of urgency in their tone and actions. IE – A potential golf tournament needs a quick answer for their possible event in late August. Students must see us this week for a critical lesson or club-fitting, although they may not play for another couple of months. However, brown turf reminds me it is still winter… Whether you have been involved in the Chris McChesney series of The 4 Disciplines of Execution or not, you are familiar with goals, and in some cases, the more focused concept of the WIG. •

Perhaps they have taken other, more common forms for you such as personal, relationship, professional, business, facility goals or others. As Chris shares, we can all get caught up in the “Whirlwind” (described earlier) of our day-to-day tasks, what he refers to as “The Day Job.” To be able to accomplish the numerous tasks at hand in the day job and still be able to focus and spend quality time on the WIG is difficult, yet so very critical for our personal improvement and professional advancement. The Colorado PGA Section leadership and staff are no different and have also set WIGs for themselves. These are focused toward our mission which is “Growing the Game and Serving the Member.” For 2021, the WIGs include: 1.
Doubles Golf
2.
Promoting the value of the PGA Professional
You will see these highlighted and detailed all throughout the 2021 season in a variety of ways - but make no mistake – they are for the sole purpose of improving your life in some respect as a Colorado PGA Professional.

Yes, the whirlwind of day-to-day tasks for the Colorado PGA staff continues as it does for each of us. Yet I’m very confident in our Leadership and Team to remain focused on not only those tasks, but also the two WIGs knowing their importance to the membership. Each of our “Day Jobs” are why we are employed but so too is the bigger picture and advancing our businesses forward. Here’s to our WIGs and remember, green grass and blue skies coming to a golf course near you, and right soon. Sincerely,

Ready to Roll: Promoting the PGA Professional, Doubles Golf and TPC Colorado Championship
H
appy New Year! I hope and trust that you have had an opportunity to get some much-needed rest and the opportunity to recharge your batteries, as 2020 was a year like we have never seen before and hopefully will never see again. However, through it all, PGA Professionals stood tall in providing an avenue of escape and respite for our friends and neighbors through the game of golf. I would expect that there is very little chance that things will be fully restored back to “normal” in 2021, but I’m a firm believer that demand for golf is just going to be even greater. PGA Professionals are where the rubber meets the road in the Golf Industry, and our plan is to showcase what our Colorado PGA Professionals are doing at their facilities, in their local communities, and through our Colorado PGA REACH Foundation, to make a positive impact in the lives of others through the game of golf. The catalyst in welcoming players back to the game was the Back2Golf initiative, developed in concert with our National Allied Partners. With PGA Members leading the way, working together with our local government officials, we worked tirelessly to operate golf in a responsible manner that allowed people of all ages, and from all backgrounds, to enjoy the many benefits of our sport. For 2021, we are going to tell the story of our Colorado PGA Professionals unlike any year before. It’s time for the golfing public in Colorado to know even more about the true leaders in golf, our Colorado PGA Professionals.

We are extremely excited for the 2021 season as we will be fully rolling out Doubles Golf Leagues throughout our Section. This fun and relaxed format is exactly what we need to help retain the gain that golf experienced in 2020. The two-person scramble format is fun for beginners, fun for couples, fun for seniors and fun for parents to play with their children. Whether you’re looking for a competitive format, or a relaxed format, Doubles Golf is a format that you can easily implement at your facility in 2021. I cannot encourage you enough to reach out to Justin Limon to learn more about how
you can drive revenue for yourself and your facility through Doubles Golf. It was very exciting to see the winner of the 2020 TPC Colorado Championship, Will Zalatoris, eagle the final hole of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines to finish inside the Top 7. The future leaders on the PGA Tour earn their stripes on the Korn Ferry Tour and we are extremely fortunate to be able to host one of these Tour events here in Colorado. In this issue of The SUMMIT, you will see several opportunities for each of us to do our part to help support this event as we want the Korn Ferry Tour to make the TPC Colorado Championship a regular stop for decades to come. This event provides tremendous support for the Colorado Section and I encourage you to do your part in supporting this event. Your Section Staff is fired up and ready to roll into the 2021 Golf Season. We are excited for the future and we welcome the opportunity to showcase you, our Colorado PGA Professionals, retain the gain through Doubles Golf, and welcome the future champions on the PGA Tour during the TPC Colorado Championship. We welcome the opportunity to assist and serve you, our PGA Members, and we cannot thank you enough for your passion and commitment to the game of golf. Together we are making a positive difference in the lives of others! Very Respectfully,
Eddie Ainsworth, PGA CEO/Executive Director Colorado PGA 6630 Bear Dance Drive Larkspur, CO 80118 eainsworth@pgahq.com C (719) 761-6125

PGA of America News
Congratulations!
Your efforts have not gone unnoticed
W
ell, we have all made it to 2021 and hopefully we will begin to see a return to some kind of normalcy at some point this year. Let me start by saying Congratulations on what all of you were able to accomplish in 2020! During a tough year, the golf industry, lead by our PGA Members at their facilities, were able to adapt and thrive. I know I have never heard “Thank You” more from my members and customers as they realized the efforts made by the golf industry to stay open and provide recreation over the last 10 months. As you are all aware the biggest news coming out of the Board the last few weeks was the decision to remove the 2022 PGA Championship from Trump Bedminster. I appreciate those who have reached out and I understand that this is a polarizing decision. I can tell you that this decision was not taken lightly nor meant to be any kind of a political statement. After extensive due diligence and careful consideration, the Board decided this was necessary to protect the PGA brand and the financial resources necessary to perpetuate the mission of our organization. Based on all the information provided, the Board with input from our corporate and media partners, the decision was made in the best long-term interest of the PGA of America. On Monday, January 18, it was announced that the 2022 PGA Championship will be held at Southern Hills Country Club (SHCC) located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Since it looks like it is going to be a while still before I can get to Colorado and meet you all in person, I thought I would use this article to introduce myself as your new District 9 Director for the next three years. I grew up and fell in love with the game of golf in Cedar City, Utah. We are a college town, home to Southern Utah University, right on I-15 about 45 minutes north of St. George. I was fortunate to play college golf at SUU from 1992-1996 for my mentor who was the PGA Professional at Cedar Ridge for 35 years, John Evans. After college, I was hired at Willow Creek Country Club as an Assistant Golf Professional, where I worked from 1997-2002. During this time, I became a PGA Member and had the privilege to work side by side with our Cobra/Puma rep and Colorado PGA Member Justin Moore for four years. I also worked at The Ranches Golf Club from 2002-2006 and Glen Eagle Golf Course from 2006-2013 as the Head Golf Professional. In 2013, I was fortunate enough to be hired back at my hometown golf course where I have been for the past seven years. During my time at Glen Eagle Golf Course, I was able to serve as an Officer for the Utah Section. Throughout my time as an Officer, I got to know some great Colorado PGA Members who I served with; Kyle Heyen, Tim Lollar, Barry Milstead, Leslie CoreDrevecky, and Eddie Ainsworth, to name a few. Eddie and I were Secretaries of our Sections at the same time before he took on his role as the Executive Director for the Colorado Section.

Attractive, Attraction & Attracting L
loyd really didn’t stand a chance when he drove Mary Swanson (Samsonite?) to the airport, as he later told his best friend Harry Dunne. It was attraction (and comedy) at the highest (and lowest) level. As an employer, you don’t have a tractor beam, so you need to work a little harder to attract high-quality candidates for open positions. But what is the difference between being an “attractive” employer and “attracting” candidates? And why does it matter? Attractive is an adjective and is important to both job seekers and employers. It is subjective in nature...think “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” Attractive employers generally receive more resumes and can be more selective, and attractive job seekers generally have more options.
“Oh yeah...yeah. Tractor beam...sucked me right in.” -Lloyd Christmas | Dumb and Dumber
On the other hand, attraction is a noun. Like a magnet, it is the force that draws you toward a particular job opportunity. Employers that aren’t perceived as attractive need to create an attraction to increase the number of candidates in their applicant pool. That leads us to attracting, which as a verb, implies action. It is during this process that you highlight your positive qualities and actively recruit candidates. Whereas you have less control over the first two, you are in full control of attracting talent. I invite you to listen to Episode 4 of Consultant Conversations, where Jason Boaz, Mike Mueller, Todd Smith and I discuss how to best attract talent in this tight labor market. Family Man, Mendelson, Helps Families in Need and Creates Opportunities During COVID-19 P
GA Head Professional Mike Mendelson at Elkhorn Ridge Golf Club located in Spearfish, South Dakota, turned the pandemic into opportunities for the course and the community in 2020. Even though South Dakota didn’t have the same level of shutdowns and mask mandates that Colorado enforced, there were similar times of uncertainty as schools closed, jobs were in question and people looked for normalcy. County and municipal restrictions on gatherings and occupancy affected local businesses. In late March of 2020, Mendelson took note of the nearby community, Rapid City, school district closures. With the children in mind, he wanted to help families affected by the school lunches no longer being available. He sought out ways to serve and learned of an opportunity to help make and transport brown bag lunches to those in need. The community rallied together for this common cause and Mendelson helped for two weeks until the school district was operational again. Also, in the area, Deadwood casinos faced shutdowns. This historic industry was shut down the longest. Many food and beverage service, dealers and casino employees were without work. Several annual pass holders to Elkhorn Ridge G.C. temporarily “lost” their jobs and faced unemployment. Mendelson and his staff offered a modified payment plan to allow their customers the opportunity to still become members. “We’re in this together,” commented Mendelson. “We looked for ways to make it work
14
for everyone. We have many customers who work in Deadwood at the casinos. I feel it created a great deal of appreciation from these customers.” Allowing extended terms to annual members was showing flexibility and it paid off. All those offered modified payment plans followed through. Not only did this provide goodwill to the community, but it also increased rounds played. While they were out of work, these members could find ‘normalcy’ in playing golf, which eliminated some of their stresses. Mendelson remarked, “We are only as good as what we can offer customers, and if we don’t have customers, we would have no rounds or revenue increases.” Tourism was promoted in South Dakota as it was advertised as a more open State (and still is in 2021). Like other areas of the country, people flocked to the course as an outside activity, but even more so with the tourism promotion. Elkhorn Ridge still followed the Back2Golf Guidelines recommended by the PGA of America though the State was not enforcing restrictions. Mendelson noticed tourists found comfort when they saw Elkhorn Ridge followed similar safety measures at their facility as ones being practiced in other areas of the country. “I am fortunate and happy to report that we had the best year ever at Elkhorn Ridge Golf Club. Our rounds increased from 12,000 annually to 16,000 in 2020. Greens fee revenue soared by an increase of 24% and shop sales were up 12%, despite running out of Titleist Golf Balls for a good chunk of July.” Mendelson attributes their success to implementing practices set forth by the PGA, USGA and Section best practices. An exciting idea finally came to fruition for the staff at Elkhorn Ridge when in 2020 they turned the Range into a par-three course on Monday afternoons and evenings. This was a pre-pandemic
The SUMMIT
Colorado PGA News The open-air restaurant near the Range par-three course allowed for additional family activity and was also noted by the public. One of the parents from the Monday family nights emailed the club and stated, “Lots of the families had not been out and seen Miller Creek Pub. It was great! Great food and the kids had a ton of fun on the putting green and the family course! We are very lucky to be members here!” In addition to growing the game for the community, the staff at the facility really bonded as they came together with creative minds to build the course. Elkhorn Ridge has every intention of doing this again in 2021 and has a plan in place to introduce PGA Jr. League, which had been difficult to launch previously. concept, but it worked out great during COVID. The regular course has been difficult for youth and beginner golfers, but this new short course brought in new people seeking outdoor activities as a family. It was a novice golf course with holes ranging from 50 to 120 yards and was located by the on-site open-air restaurant. The Monday events began in June and the first few weeks had sparse participation. The maintenance staff clean-picked the range and then mowed it for the afternoon set up. They had target greens on the range with flagsticks in larger diameter holes. This rustic application to set up a par-three gained traction in the community and even caught the eyes of a Little League team family who lives on the course. As a team, they came out for their end of season celebration and the kids had a blast. The family nights went through August, right about the time kids went back to school.
A Member of the Colorado Section since 2000 and former Colorado PGA West Chapter President, Mendelson moved to South Dakota three years ago. His wife, Julie, and their two children (ages five and three) joined along one Monday evening, which he feels very fortunate to have done together. “My family is everything,” he commented. This heart for family extends well beyond his own home and benefits his facility and the community, growing the game and impacting others.

Their steadfast promotion of our great sport is recognized with a letter from the PGA President, a special Quarter Century Club certificate and a gold Quarter Century Club lapel pin. This month, the Colorado Section is proud to feature three Quarter Century Club Members; Keith Martin, Robert Duncan and Tim Lollar.
Keith Martin, PGA
Head Golf Professional - Twin Peaks Golf Course Where did you grow up? I grew up in Longmont, Colorado. What was your first introduction to the game of golf? When I was 10 years old, we moved across the street from Twin Peaks Golf Course in a new neighborhood. There were no other houses in the neighborhood and no other friends to hang out with, so for something to do, my father took me down to the clubhouse and introduced me to the Professional. Then, I began going to the course every day. As it turns out, I never really left. Why did you choose to become a PGA Golf Professional? I became a PGA Golf Professional to make the game I love better for existing golfers and introduce it to new golfers. What makes you most proud about being a PGA Professional? I am proud about all of the people I have helped come to the game. What golf facilities have you been employed at and in what capacity? • Sunset Golf Course, Longmont, Colorado - Assistant Professional 1992-1997 • Sunset Golf Course - Head Professional 1997-2006 • Twin Peaks Golf Course and Sunset Golf Course Head Golf Professional 2006-2008 • Twin Peaks Golf Course, Longmont, Colorado - Head Golf Professional 2008-2021 What do you feel is the most meaningful contribution to the game of golf you have made? The most meaningful contributions are the relationships I have made with staff and customers and the constant pursuit of teaching golfers. What hobbies do you have outside of golf? I enjoy “beaching it” with the family and skiing. If you could have a dream foursome, who would it be and why? My dream foursome would be Danny Harvanek, Pete Bain, my father and myself. These men provided me all the tools I needed to have the career in golf that I began dreaming of since I was 10 years old. To spend a day with them on the golf course would provide me the opportunity to express how thankful I am for the roles they played in my life.

Robert Duncan, PGA
Life Member – Rapid City, South Dakota Where did you grow up? I was born and raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Being one of six kids in the 60’s, I had no clue about the game of golf and my sport of choice was baseball. What was your first introduction to the game of golf? I was introduced to the game of golf as a senior in high school when a fellow baseball teammate took me out to the links for a round of golf. It was quite enjoyable, but I only played occasionally. Why did you choose to become a PGA Golf Professional? I first aspired to be a professional umpire and work in the major leagues and spent years in baseball working my way through the ranks. In my final year in professional baseball, I started playing golf on the road, never breaking 80! I remarked to my wife that if I didn’t make it to the Robert Duncan, PGA, and his wife, Sharon big leagues, I would enroll at College of the Desert, in the Palm Springs area, in the golf management program. I was called to the big leagues when both the American and National League umpires went on strike. Even though it was short-lived, I accomplished my goal of being a professional umpire in the major leagues. I followed through with the plan in golf management after being released from professional baseball. At the age of 38, I started the program and my career in golf. What makes you most proud about being a PGA Professional? The most rewarding aspect of being at Mission Lakes Country Club was introducing the members on how to give back to golf, now and in the future. What golf facilities have you been employed at and in what capacity? All within the Coachella Valley of the desert, I started at Sunrise C.C. for a summer as a driving range attendant and ranger. Then, at Springs Club as a ranger, I worked minimal time in the shop. The most valuable learning experience, and instrumental in my career, was at Marrakesh C.C. in Palm Desert, California, with PGA Head Professional Willy Gatherum. In 1996, I was selected to be the head professional at Mission Lakes Country Club located in Desert Hot Springs, California. Being at Mission Lakes C.C. I was blessed to spend my entire career at one country club for 22 years. What do you feel is the most meaningful contribution to the game of golf you have made? Working with the MLCC members and board of directors, I was able to introduce high school golf to the club. Starting out, it was just to have high school matches at the club. Within a few years, the program morphed into local playoffs, sectional, regional, and eventually state playoffs. As the events grew, so did the member participation for the high school playoffs. Not only did membership open up their club free of charge and sponsor meals for after the event, but they also had two members per foursome to fill divots, rake bunkers, and transport to and from starting and finishing holes - not to mention hundreds of members as spectators. Members and parents asked me numerous times why this was so important to me. My response to them was, as these young men and ladies continue golfing into their adulthood and become members of golf courses, they will remember the experience they had at MLCC as high school golfers, and continue to pass on the love of the game to younger generations. If you could have a dream foursome, who would it be and why? My dream foursome would be: Craig Stadler - He’s a gamer; Arnie Palmer - Most instrumental to where the tour is today; Ernie Els - Quality man, father, and gentleman in the game; and Jesus Christ - He’s led me through my life with the Holy Spirit and can hit the 1 iron.

Tim Lollar, PGA Life Member - Colorado
Where did you grow up? I grew up in Farmington, Missouri. What was your first introduction to the game of golf? My dad had an old set of right-handed clubs. I would use a wedge to hit plastic golf balls around our back yard selecting different trees as my target. It didn’t take long to figure out that I wasn’t a right-handed golfer and soon after, I got my first set of “lefty” clubs. Why did you choose to become a PGA Golf Professional? I made the decision later than most. It looked like a fun job with the ability to be outdoors and to play golf! What makes you most proud about being a PGA Professional? The honor of the badge and what it stands for is incredible. To be associated with an Association that has such high standards of integrity is very humbling. What golf facilities have you been employed at and in what capacity? • Breckenridge Golf Club (4 seasons). This is where my career began as an Assistant Professional. •
Tim Lollar, PGA, and his wife, Vanessa
Lakewood Country Club (21 years). I came to Lakewood as an Assistant, then was promoted, and held both Director of Golf and Head Golf Professional positions at different times through my tenure.
What do you feel is the most meaningful contribution to the game of golf you have made? Usually that is determined by others..., but my hope is that I somehow had a positive impact on people, that my successes showed others that they too could accomplish their dreams, and that my efforts through my years of service to the Section helped make the Colorado Section the greatest of 41. What hobbies do you have outside of golf? My wife and I enjoy most all outdoor activities; hiking, biking, and fishing to name a few. If you could have a dream foursome, who would it be and why? My dream foursome would include the following: George W. Bush - It seems like he’d have a lot of good stories to tell. Donald Trump – His stories might even be better! My Dad - He passed away when I was young, so I’d like to share my life with him.
