Long Term Strategic Plan, PGA.org, and much more To kick off the New Year, below are some key updates, as we celebrate the 99th year of the PGA of America!
Long-Term Strategic Plan
At the PGA Annual Meeting, President Derek Sprague and CEO Pete Bevacqua unveiled the future of the PGA by presenting the Long-Term Strategic Plan. The Plan has been collaboration among the PGA of America’s Officers, National Board of Directors, Past Presidents, National Committees, Section Officers, Section Executive Directors and PGA of America Staff for more than a year. The Plan is highlighted by the mission of our Association – Serve the Member and Grow the Game. The Core Products identified in this Plan are: • Education • Employment • Player Development • Sections • Properties • PGA REACH (the charitable foundation of the PGA of America) • Championships • Global Initiatives I encourage you to click here to read the story on the launch of the Plan in the January 2015 issue of PGA Magazine. It is a highly informative and important story as we drive the game forward, well beyond the Centennial year of the PGA of America.

And if you happen to type in PGALinks. com out of habit, don’t worry…It will automatically redirect you to the new PGA.org.
PGA Marketing Resource Center
As we prepare for the upcoming season, I encourage you to utilize a number of outstanding tools available to assist your daily operation via the PGA Marketing Resource Center on PGA.org. Among the valuable offerings on the Resource Center are: • Creative Materials – Flyers, emails and templates • Marketing and Public Relations – Facebook, Twitter, promoting Get Golf Ready to companies and a Marketing Action Plan
Any PGA Member previously granted the $5,000 maximum is now eligible for the additional grant up to $2,000 for any out-of-pocket expenses incurred after Nov. 19, 2014. The PGA Disaster Relief Fund was created to provide PGA Members who find themselves faced with temporary financial problems due to medical emergencies, illness and natural disasters. It is supported exclusively by donations from PGA Professionals. If you have any questions regarding the Disaster Relief Fund, please contact the PGA of America’s Membership Department at (800) 474-2776.
Centennial Celebration

In January 2016, the PGA of America will launch our Centennial celebration at the PGA Merchandise Show. The 100-day celebration will be centered on raising the profile of PGA Members and PGA Sections among employers and golfers. In order to do this, we will work closely with our media partner, Golf Channel, to communicate the value of PGA Members and Sections to the game and our industry.

COLORADO PGA REACH What it means for our Member PGA Professionals. C
olorado PGA REACH is the charitable Foundation of the Colorado Section of the PGA of America. The recent name change of our Foundation took place to align ourselves with the PGA of America’s Foundation and their focus of “Impacting Lives through Golf”. Together our combined mission is that we are dedicated to positively impacting the lives of our Veterans, Youth and Diverse populations. For many years the Colorado PGA has been making a positive difference in the lives of others through the game of golf. We have been accomplishing this on a fairly successful level through our Golf in Schools Program, Growth of the Game Grants, College Scholarships, and the events we host for our Veterans. Our goal first and foremost has been in service to others. It has however also been to elevate the PGA Member in the eyes of their local community. By being involved in the programs that we offer through our Foundation adds value to you as a PGA Member and allows us as an organization to meet our mission of serving the member and growing the game. From a PGA of America national perspective, they have just recently put together a PGA REACH Board of Trustees to include Rudy Giuliani as a PGA

G4 Summit: “A Coming Together of Golf”

he G4 (Colorado Golf Summit) Summit brings together the allied golf associations of Colorado for a “A Coming Together of the Golf” in Colorado. The allied associations involved in the summit are the Rocky Mountain Golf Course Superintendents Association, the Mile High Chapter of the Club Managers Association, the Colorado Golf Association/Colorado Women’s Golf Association, and the Colorado Section PGA. This year the keynote speaker will be the CEO of the PGA of America, Pete Bevaqua. Pete has served the PGA of America as the CEO since coming on board November 10, 2012, succeeding Joe Steranka, who had served The Association for 25 years, the last seven as CEO. Pete will share with those in attendance the long term Strategic Plan that the PGA of America has put in place and how it will positively influence the golf industry. Pete has an exensive background in golf administration having held numerous positions with the USGA before leaving for Creative Artist Agency (CAA). Prior to his professional career, Pete graduated magna cum laude in English in 1993 from

Notre Dame University and went on to earn a law degree in 1997 from Georgetown University. The Summit will also include an Industry Panel featuring prominent players from across the world of golf. Including Bevaqcua from the PGA of America will be Sandy Cross, the Senior Director of Diversity & Inclusion, PGA of America, Rand Jerris, the Senior Managing Director of Public Services for the USGA, and J.D. Dockstader, Chief Business Development Officer, GCSAA.
In addition to Bevaqcua’s keynote address, presentations will be given by CGA President Phil Lane, Sandy Cross, and Colorado Golf Alliance Lobbyist Jennifer Cassell. PGA of America and Colorado PGA Scholarship Applications Available T
he PGA Financial Assistance Fund Scholarship Program was established in 1986 to provide college scholarships for graduating high school seniors and college students who are the children or grandchildren of a PGA member. Since its inception, this program has awarded some $5.7 million to 2,808 students. The amount and number of scholarships is determined by the availability of funds, and may vary from year to year based on these factors and IRS guidelines. Scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the PGA Scholarship Committee. The scholarship is for accredited universities or colleges in the United States only. By applying for the PGA of America scholarship, graduating high school seniors and college students who are the children or grandchildren of a PGA member are also applying for the local Colorado PGA Scholarships. The scholarship program is an academic based scholarship program that takes into account the following depending on the class level of the student:
High School Graduating Senior
• College Cumulative Grade Point Average must be at least 3.4 (60 percent of the scholarship weighting scale) • Most recently completed college semester or quarter GPA (30 percent of the scholarship weighting scale) • Extracurricular activities in college such as sports, clubs, student government, community service, part time employment, etc. (10 percent of the scholarship weighting scale) The application process is available online between Nov. 17, 2014 and March 16, 2015, and students are asked to wait until they are in possession of their most current grade report (first semester) or transcript before applying. The applicant must enter the student’s Social Security number and the PGA-affiliated parent or grandparent’s PGA ID number to access the application. After submitting the online application, the applicant must send a sealed, official school grade transcript postmarked by March 16, 2015, that shows their GPA information and submit the ACT/ SAT test score report (if a high school applicant) to:

ew for 2015 the Colorado PGA Teaching and Coaching Summit will be held in conjunction with the 2015 G4 Summit. The featured guest for 2015 will be Dave Stockton. Dave Stockton is an 11-time winner on the PGA TOUR, 14 times on the Champions TOUR, and a Ryder Cup Captain. He is well known as one of the pre-eminent short game gurus. Dave Stockton to Highlight 2015 Colorado PGA Teaching and Coaching Summit
He was named to the USC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005, and to the Southern California Golf Association Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2009, Dave changed his focus to teaching putting and short game, creating Stockton Golf with his sons. Together, they have worked with dozens of players on all the major world tours. Players the Stocktons have taught won 29 times around the world in 2010, and won three major championships in the span of a month in the summer of 2011, Rory McIlroy at the U.S. Open and Yani Tseng at the U.S. Women’s Open and Women’s British Open. Notable clients past and present include: Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, Justin Rose, Nick Watney, J.B. Holmes, Massy Kuramoto, Matt Kuchar, Sean O’Hair, Martin Laird, Morgan Pressel, Yani Tseng, Suzann Pettersen, Michelle Wie, and Brittany Lang among others. Colorado Chevy Dealers Renew Sponsorship for 2015 T
he Colorado PGA could not be happier to announce that the Colorado Chevy Dealers have renewed their partnership for the 2015 season. “Our partnership with the Colorado Chevy Dealers is our strongest and longest partnership” noted Eddie Ainsworth, Colorado PGA Executive Director. “Their commitment to our member professionals has been exceptional and will hopefully continue that way for years to come.” The partnership dates back to 1980 when Tom Babb, PGA Head Professional at Inverness Golf Club at the time, developed a partnership with Lloyd Chavez and AJ Guanella of Burt Chevrolet. Originally, PGA Professionals gave free golf lessons at the participating dealerships. Since then the partnership has transformed into an all-encompassing partnership. In its’ current state, the partnership positions the Colorado Chevy Dealers as the Preferred Vehicles Provider of the Colorado PGA. They are also presenting partners of all fourteen Colorado PGA Pro Am’s as well as the Colorado PGA Professional Championship and the Colorado Senior PGA Professional Championship. he Colorado PGA Board of Directors recently voted to reduce the fee to be part of the Colorado PGA Tee Time Alliance. Facilities on the Front Range will pay $7,500 and facilities in the West Chapter will pay $5,000. The end goal of reducing the fee is to increase the overall number of facilities that are on the website and therefore create a better product for our customers driving more consumers to book through a local site. And if there is one thing we know, Coloradans like to support local businesses and products! The website will be marketed throughout the state of Colorado utilizing multiple, direct mediums to drive consumers to the website. It is there that we hope to offer the most online tee times in the market. rowth of the Game Grant Applications are available for the 2015 golf season. Applications are available online and can be accessed by clicking on the Grant Application image to the right. Colorado PGA REACH Grant Applications are designed to provide financial assistance to facilities within the geographic boundaries of the Colorado Section PGA, that employ PGA members or apprentices in good standing, to develop and/or significantly enhance Growth of the Game programs that will attract and retain new golfers. MSR Options Abound A
s of the beginning of December, 50% of our Colorado PGA Professionals have met their MSR requirement for the cycle ending this June 15, 2015. While this is a great number months in advance of the deadline, there are literally enough opportunities left that if a member with zero points could still fulfill their requirements. The following are the scheduled Meetings, Seminars, and other MSR Opportunities available to Colorado PGA Section members. To receive proper membership service requirement Credits, Colorado PGA members must send copies of their MSR certificates or other documentation of the event to the Colorado PGA office. Seminars outside The PGA or not on the approved list may be honored upon submission of documentation detailing the course content and length, as well as a certificate of completion or transcripts. If honored, MSR Credits will be awarded as stipulated by MSR Rules and Regulations.

How to Submit for Self Director MSR Credits The new MSR self-post feature is now available to members. Members are now able to self-post selected MSR activities directly online via PGALinks. The pre-determined activities available for Members to self-post are from Box #2 Service to the Industry (M06), Box #3 Golf Coach (M07) and Box #7 Media Related Articles (M09). All the rules that are currently in place regarding the number of credits awarded and maximum credits that can be awarded have been built into this process. Members are cautioned to be factual; as falsification of information could result in disciplinary action against any member who submits fictitious activities. Members will be able to access the selfpost feature by clicking on the toolbar for Education or for Membership, then MSR Requirements. In addition, there is a self-post link on the Member’s Home Page just beneath the required and earned summary. Also, PGALinks Form #108, How to Earn Member Service Requirement credits, has also been updated with an active link from which the member can access the self-posting screen.

Golf 2.0 Conducting and Reporting Results:
New Videos Available The PGA of America recently announced that they have replaced the eleven (11) complimentary PGA Required MSR online education courses with ten (10) new courses. These new courses are more timely and of a higher quality video. They offer these courses as a supplement to education offerings available through the Section and to provide yet another option to fulfill your MSR requirements for the current cycle. Currently, roughly 38.8% of all PGA Members have met the MSR requirement, which puts us about 4 percentage points behind where we were four years ago at the same time within the previous MSR cycle. The courses may be accessed via PGALinks by clicking here. MSR credit may be earned only one time for any online MSR course. In order to earn MSR credit, you must score a 70% or higher on the assessment. If you do not score 70% or higher, you will be allowed one (1) re-take opportunity. You will be directed to the assessment when the video concludes.

CGA | Jenson to Return to Colorado Golf Association A familiar face will be returning to the Colorado Golf Association (CGA) as Dustin Jenson will re-join the staff in early 2015 as the Managing Director of Operations. Jenson previously spent eight years with the CGA, seven as the Director of Youth Programs.
Jenson left his position with the CGA four years ago to return to his hometown of Jamestown, North Dakota. There he worked for his alma mater, the University of Jamestown, where he held multiple positions: executive director of the booster club, director of alumni relations, and coaching both the men’s and women’s golf teams. In his new role, Jenson will rely on his past experience as he will oversee rules and competitions, junior competitions, and course rating and handicapping. With the addition of Jenson, some roles will be adjusted within the CGA. Erin Gangloff will become the CGA’s director of programs, handling programs and outreach efforts and Ryan Smith

RMGCSAA | Krick Honored by GCSAA Mark Krick, GCSAA Superintendent at The Homestead Golf Course in Lakewood has been announced as a winner of the ELGA (Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards) chapter winners for public facilities for 2014. An independent panel of judges representing national environmental groups, turfgrass experts, university researchers, and valued members of the golf industry conducted the award selection. The award honors golf course superintendents and their facilities for overall course management excellence and best management practices in the areas of water conservation, water quality management, energy conservation, pollution prevention, waste management, wildlife and habitat conservation, communication and outreach, and leadership.
The Homestead is an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses having received full certification in 2005. They were previously awarded the ELGA award for the Rocky Mountain Chapter in 2006. All the winners will be honored February 25, 2014 at the Golf Industry Show in San Antonio. Omega Partners for Player of the Year
O
MEGA, the Official Timekeeper of the PGA of America and the 2014 PGA Championship, has extended its partnership agreement with the PGA of America through 2022 to include direct benefits at the Section level. The agreement, announced in late 2014 at the PGA Championship, will feature OMEGA continuing to serve as the Official Patron and Official Timekeeper of the PGA of America for eight more years. At the Section level, OMEGA will be the presenting sponsor of member Player of the Year Awards. Here in Colorado, that means the top-three players on the OMEGA Dow Finsterwald Player of the Year Points List will share in $6,000 of prize money. That will be broken down to $3,000 for first, $1,800 for second, and $1,200 for third place. The top-three players on the OMEGA Senior Player of the Year Points List will share in $3,000 of prize money. That will be broken down to $1,500 for first, $900 for second, and $600 for third.
National Car Rental Pro Am Series to Return at Columbine CC Pro Am and Pro-Lady
T
he National Car Rental Pro Am Series is back on for this coming tournament season with two events scheduled for the year. Like this past season, Columbine Country Club will play host to the first National Car Rental Pro Am as they will host a Pro Am on Monday, May 11, 2015. The team format will again be one Low Gross/one Low Net and with an Individual, Professional only contest as well. There will also be an option Skins Game and Senior Division as well.

The new long-term partnership will continue to enhance the brand’s rich history in sports as Official Timekeeper of the PGA Championship, Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, PGA Grand Slam of Golf, Ryder Cup (when held in the United States), PGA Professional National Championship and PGA Golf Properties. It further aligns OMEGA with the world’s largest sports organization, comprised of 28,000 men and women PGA Professionals, who are recognized for their expertise in teaching the game, promoting the game, and managing golf facilities.
The other event scheduled for 2015 is the National Car Rental Glenmoor Country Club Pro-Lady, scheduled for Monday, June 8, 2015. This event will feature both an 8:00a and 1:30p shotgun start and will include lunch. Teams will consist of one PGA Professional or Apprentice with three females amateurs. The team format will be a Shamble with the team choosing the best tee shot (including the Professionals) and finishing play of the hole with their own ball. As in all of our Pro Am’s, there will be a Professional content and an
optional skins game and senior division.
All amateurs who compete in the events will be required to register into the Emerald Club, the industry-first “Frequent Renter” program which offers members counter bypass as well as access to National’s “Emerald Aisle,” an exclusive section of the lot where members can select any vehicle as long as they reserve a midsized car. Registration for both events will be available when the Tournament Schedule goes live, tentatively in early to mid-February.

CPP Program Rolling Along

our Colorado Section broke new ground in 2013 when we offered the unique opportunity to partake in the PGA of America’s continuing education program in a brand new setting. The Certified Professional Program (CPP) has always been an online, distance-based learning module; but to better serve our Membership, your Section worked with the PGA’s Education Department to arrange a classroom based delivery of the material. Since early 2013, we have offered CPP certification classes in Player Development and Golf Operations. This month, we kicked off the first ever in-class delivery of the Teaching & Coaching (formerly Instruction) CPP at the headquarters of one of the Section’s partners, GolfTEC. 15 PGA Members from the Front Range, and one Member from the West Chapter, via Skype, have already gone through the first 5 modules of the program prior to a two week holiday break. Guest speakers have included Trent Wearner, PGA, Ed Oldham, PGA MP, Stan Sayers, PGA, and Justin Kruger. These professionals have given of their time and expertise for the betterment of our

Ask the Experts... Going into the offseason, what one tip would you offer your students to keep their game up to par? You should rest your mind and body especially if you've been tournament hopping all summer/fall. But with winter weather and shorter days upon us that doesn't mean you should put the clubs away until Spring 2015. Winter means taking on some of those swing improvements that were a little challenging to do during the competition season. Work throughout the winter in a mirror - work on those improvements by starting with swings in slow motion building up speed as you see success.

The off-season is a great time to improve stroke/swing mechanics. It is VERY challenging to perform well on-course when you are working on changing your movement patterns. An indoor Game Plan of lessons during the off-season is the best time to prepare for the 2015 season without having to struggle through the frustration of changing swing mechanics during the middle of it. This is the time of year to put your game through training camp so you’re ready to play great golf when you first peg it in 2015.

USGA and Websters define par very differently. In order to keep your game up to “Par” try reading some books that work on the inner game of golf, the mental side. I recommend signing up for Tim Kremer’s l Spirit of Golf daily free message or reading his book “Skills and Drills “
I think it depends on what the student’s goals are. The off-season is a great time to review and plan. Review the past year. What was good and what needs work? Put your goals down on paper and then list the steps necessary to accomplish those goals. If he/she wants to make a swing change, the off-season is a great time to make a change. Swing changes take time and the off-season provides you the time to build a new habit. Chuck Hogan, in a Colorado PGA seminar several years ago said that golfers in Colorado should have better swings than golfers in Arizona because they have the winter to work on their swings.

If the student doesn’t desire to make a swing change, there are other things that can be done to help maintain or improve. A golfer could work to improve his/her body by working with a fitness expert who knows golf. The student could make 50 practice swings each days in the basement, back yard or garage or hit 50 putts per day on a putting carpet.
“Going into the offseason, I always recommend doing two things. One, I suggest doing mirror work on your swing to work on the move or positions that you need to improve. Using a mirror and being able to see yourself helps a ton! Secondly, go to the gym and get in shape!”

We are very excited for Erin as this position will be of great benefit for her and her family at this point in time, but we are also sad to see her go as she has done so much to help us build our Junior Golf Program and get it to the point it is today. The Colorado Section hosted 5 local qualifiers and 1 sub-regional in 2014 and is excited to announce the dates and sites for 2015. With these competitions we are hoping to draw 1000 kids to golf through this fun event. The host facilities and the actual competition is only one aspect of the initiative. The Drive, Chip and Putt concept is a great way to spice up your junior program and bring new ideas to increasing participation.
