Colorado PGA Junior Golf

Welcome Hello fellow golf professionals, By now you have heard or read about the Colorado PGA’s role and mission in the area of Junior Golf. We have been working hard to create what we believe to be a monumental opportunity for you, your facilities and, most importantly, the youth and families of our Colorado Section. It is our hope that you will find value in this publication to ignite a spark, fuel a flame or create an inferno in the area of junior golf. This is a dynamic document and will change as our programs continue to grow. We are excited to be part of an organization that with collaboration of many successful junior programs across the country, is ready to launch forward with the vision that youth golf should be a stepping pattern of progress and development. Just as other youth sports are designed, the Colorado PGA is now armed with a clear chart of progression and an informational hub- www.coloradopgajuniorgolf.com that a parent can navigate with ease. It is our job as your Section Leadership to ensure you have all the tools you need to create, build, enhance and expand the opportunities for juniors at your facility. Our Junior Golf Director is available to meet one-on-one with anyone to provide clarity and ideas and to learn from you on how we can work together to grow the game, grow your business and grow healthy and successful children. Warm Regards,

CPGA Certified Junior Facility A Colorado PGA Certified Junior Facility is highlighted as being a facility that provides a first-class junior golf operation with programming objectives consistent with the evolving practices and techniques of today’s youth. For $250 per calendar year, a certified facility will receive an optimized search capability with a listing of programs offered on coloradopgajuniorgolf.com, an opportunity to market a “Kids play Free” incentive and the ability to offer a $20 discount to any junior wishing to become a Colorado PGA Junior Member. Kids Play Free At the 2013 Denver Golf Expo, Meg Mallon and Dottie Pepper, the Captain’s for the 2013 USA Solheim Cup Team, were posed a question about the biggest deterrent in the growth of Junior Golf and their answer was loud and clear: Access, Access, Access. The Colorado PGA is proud to present an opportunity for all Junior Members to participate in a Kids Play Free Campaign. Much like Colorado Ski Country offering 5th graders an opportunity to learn the sport of skiing or snowboarding for Free, we will offer juniors the ability to utilize 3 “free” opportunities at participating facilities. Particpating facilitites will have complete control on their offer which can be any practice or playing opportunity. This presents a great benefit to junior members but also allows the facility to track particular demographics of those golfers. Through a customer management application or via web browser, a facility can identify the who, what, when, where, and why of their junior customers. A facility who is interested in participating in this campaign will need to be a Certified Junior Facility and will gain additional exposure on the Kids Play Free opportunities listed on www.coloradopgajuniorgolf.com.

CPGA Golf in Schools The Colorado PGA serves with a long term goal of making a difference in the lives of others by providing opportunities for families to build and strengthen relationships, and engage in a sport that lasts a lifetime. The Colorado PGA Golf in Schools Program just completed its third year and is running strong. Since its inception, the program has introduced over 30,000 children to the game. Through funding provided by the Colorado PGA Foundation and the Colorado Open Foundation, the game of golf and the life skills associated with it are introduced by golf professionals to school-age children at no cost to the school or the student. The program is conducted during a 3-day session in the child’s Physical Education classes with a final-day field trip at a nearby golf course. The Colorado PGA continues to lead the way with the Golf in Schools Program and many of our PGA Professionals have been successful in utilizing the program to expand their junior golf programs and introduce thousands of kids to the game of golf. The Colorado PGA offers many training sessions every year and can help you get started today. CPGA Girl Power Golf Girl Power Golf consists of a curriculum that utilizes proven success strategies for attracting and retaining girls in the game of golf by incorporating fun and engaging instruction and social activities both on and off the golf course. The compensation structure and curriculum are similar to the YMCA/PGA Summer Camps. DID YOU KNOW? Research consistently shows that girls reap the biggest rewards when learning in all-girl environments – allowing them to feel more comfortable learning the game in a setting where they are free to be themselves. Participating in sports is crucial for helping girls develop positive self-esteem and confidence. On average, more than 40 percent of girls drop out of sports by the age of 14 years old. Strong female mentors and peer role models inspire girls to develop higher expectations for themselves. Girls are more focused on their performance than their appearance when in a girl-friendly environment.

Colorado Team Golf flips the board on the game of golf by providing team-formatted events to Colorado PGA Junior members. Team Golf teams are created through a facility’s junior golf program, and will be eligible to participate in up to 16 Team Golf events in 2014. (For a copy of the 2014 Team Golf Coaches Manual, please click here.) Mission Team Golf is for Colorado PGA Junior Members ages 7-14 with beginner level golf experience and offers an introduction to tournament play through 9-hole team scramble competition. CPGA Team Golf

Team golf is open to all Colorado PGA Junior Member ages 7-14 and designed specifically for beginner level players who do not possess extensive tournament experience. Team Golf is designed to be a stepping stone into Individual Stroke Play tournaments and for those players who are unable to consistently score 45 or under for 9 holes. Format A Team is comprised of six players that form three 2-person teams. These 2-person teams compete in their respective coed age divisions (7-10, 11-12, 13-14) in a 2-person Scramble format. Each 2- person team will be awarded points based on how they finish in their respective division. Points earned in each division are then added together to create the team’s overall point total. Awards are distributed based on overall team point totals. Each individual on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams are awarded medals. Yardages All Team Golf participants will compete from age and gender specific tees which will be set at modified yardages and advertised to all players via the local rules sheet they are given before play begins. There are three sets of tees which range from 1400 yards to 2300 yards depending on the age and gender of the player. When applicable, Team Golf events will use the big cups.

CPGA Team Golf Fees All players who wish to participate in Team Golf tournaments must be members of the Colorado PGA Junior Membership. The membership fee is $50 and valid for one calendar year and can be accessed through www.coloradopgajuniorgolf.com. A junior may also register for a Colorado PGA Junior membership for $30 through a Certified Junior Facility. Additionally, each Team Golf tournament is $25 per player. Players are able to register for Team Golf tournaments online by using the user ID and password they are provided after registering for membership. Forming and Entering Team Each Coach will be responsible for making sure that each Team member is registered for a PGA Junior membership. Team members that are not registered for a PGA Junior membership will not be able to participate in Team Golf tournaments. Approximately three (3) weeks prior to all Team Golf tournaments, all coaches will be sent an entry form for the upcoming tournament. This entry form will include all of the appropriate deadlines which pertain to the tournament. Once your entry form is filled out with six (6) players/three (3) two-person teams (name and division) and the Team Name, please return the entry form via email to ediegel@pgahq.com or fax at (303)681-3992 before the roster entry deadline. The players will however play from the age/ gender appropriate tees. Please note that all Team Golf tournaments will be capped at 96 players (16 teams) unless noted otherwise prior to the entry deadline. Each coach will be eligible to enter one (1) team on a first come first served basis. If a coach wishes to submit more than one team, the coach must designate each team as “A Team”, “B Team”, etc. The “A Team” will be entered into the event immediately and the “B Team” will be placed onto a waiting list until the Roster Entry Deadline has passed. If there is room for additional Teams following the Roster Entry Deadline, the COPGA will accept Teams from the waiting list on a first come first served basis until the event is full. Once your entry form is received, a member of the COPGA staff will add each player to the tournament’s invitation list. Players must register by 11:59 p.m. three (3) days prior to the tournament. All players will be able to use their BlueGolf ID and password to register for the Team Golf tournament that they have been invited to.
