Happy Summer! Eddie Ainsworth, PGA | Executive Director Well it sure took its time getting here, but we are finally experiencing some great weather here in the Colorado Section. It almost reminds me of the weather pattern when we first moved here to Colorado almost 17 years ago. You could almost set your watch by the weather. Just about every day at 3pm we would have a 30 minute thunderstorm roll through the Air Force Academy, providing a little rain and cooling things off. Those were great days. We didn’t have to spend as much on irrigation, and didn’t need air conditioning at the house. The weather helped to cut expenses both at work and at home. Hopefully we just might be getting back to that same weather pattern once again! Believe it or not, the weather is what I would like to talk to you about. Well, to be more exact, I would like to talk to you about Girl’s High School Golf, and the time of year we ask our young ladies to play. As a golf facility manager I thought I was doing my part to help support Girl’s High School Golf years ago when Air Academy High School came to me to start a Girl’s Golf Team Program. We offered the Girls the course and practice areas at a nominal price, and did what we could to support the program. What I did not know at the time was how difficult it was for these young ladies to participate in the program. Not at least until my own daughter decided on her own that she wanted to participate in Girl’s High School Golf. Here are a few things that you may or may not know about the program; The Girls play in the spring. Playing in the springtime in the Rockies means it’s hit or miss on the weather. Course conditions are at best, marginal. For the most part they are playing on aerified fairways, greens, etc. Probably even worse than these things are the amount of school these girls miss at the end of the semester, making it very difficult to keep their grades up. To participate in the program these girls miss almost full days of school right at the end of the semester, and in some cases, girls have had to choose in playing in the state finals or miss the opportunity to participate in their graduation ceremonies. Oh, and if you happen to live in the mountains, there is no Girl’s High School Golf Program because of the snow. The boys on the other hand play in the fall. They play in the best golf weather Colorado has to offer. They play in perfect course conditions and the school the boys miss is at the beginning of the semester, so they have plenty of time to make up any work they miss. If we are going to introduce more girls to the game of golf, these are exactly the conditions they need to be playing in. The best Colorado has to offer! In recent discussions with the Colorado High School Athletic Association and the Athletic Directors, their biggest concern is that they do not feel that there are enough golf courses willing to support both programs in the fall. They are open to the idea of making a change, but before they can even consider doing so, they need to know that enough golf courses will support the change. Therefore we have put together a survey that we need each and every facility to fill out. You can access the survey by clicking here. Here are a few things to consider when you are filling out the survey; most courses experience a large decline in rounds of golf played after Labor Day, especially during weekdays, and in a recent survey among High School Golf Coaches, 79% would welcome the opportunity to be paired with a PGA Professional to assist with coaching and instruction for their

team. (continued on page 5) (continued from page 3) We have before us an opportunity to make a tremendous impact on growing the game of golf here in Colorado. When you consider all that we are doing in the area of Junior Golf through Golf in Schools, PGA YMCA Summer Camps, TEAM Golf, Drive, Chip & Putt, and PGA Junior Tour, the opportunity to make this positive move for Girl’s High School Golf to a fall sport would only help to increase the growth of girls into the game. Colorado Golf Association Executive Director Ed Mate and I have been discussing this with CHSAA and the Athletic Directors for some time now. Neither of us realized this was such a problem until our daughters participated in the program. It’s too late to make a difference for Ed’s or my daughter as they both will be seniors this coming fall. It’s not too late for each of you to take a serious look at hosting a High School Golf Program, Boys or Girls, if you are currently not, and all of us to work together to continue to grow the game. If we are able to make this change it will be a positive change for the girls that are currently participating in the program, it will introduce more girls to the game, provide coaching and instruction opportunities, and ultimately provide a win, win for everyone! Please take a few minutes to complete the survey by clicking here. It is very important that we hear from each facility to know exactly where we stand as an organization on supporting this effort. I have also asked Patrick to set up a Blog where you can post your comments and thoughts on this issue. You can access this by clicking here.

Two Members Honored by Colorado Golf Hall of Fame Jim Johnson, PGA Life Member was one of three people inducted into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at The Club at Rolling Hills. Fittingly, Johnson served as the Head Golf Professional and Director of Golf at the club from 1975 until his retirement in 2001. Johnson’s Colorado PGA accolades are lengthy. He was the 1978 Horton Smith Award winner, the 1985 Golf Professional of the Year, and the 2007 Warren Smith Award winner. He had a distinguished playing career as well as he was a three-time Colorado PGA Senior Player of the Year, competed in one Senior PGA Championship and two US Senior Opens. During Johnson's tenure at Rolling Hills, he helped create one of the most prestigious high school girl’s tournaments, the Ashley Forey Invitational. Doug Rohrbaugh, PGA Head Professional at Ironbridge Golf Club was also honored on Sunday, June 8, 2014 as the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame Person of the Year. Rohbaugh had one of the best seasons on record as he was victorious in the HealthONE Colorado Senior Open, Colorado PGA Professional Championship, and the Colorado Senior PGA Professional Championship. Rohrbaugh didn’t finish there as he competed in the 2013 US Senior Open and recently competed in the Senior PGA Championship and finished tied for second at the HealthONE Colorado Senior Open.

Billinger Named DU’s Men’s Head Coach Erik Billinger is no stranger to the DU Golf Team. He was a student-athlete with the Pioneers after first competing collegiately at the University of Colorado. While at DU, Billinger was a two-time NCAA Individual Qualifier as well as the 2001 Sun Belt Conference Champion. Following his collegiate career, Erik spent two seasons assisting both the Men’s and Women’s teams in practice and recruiting. He moved on from that position but never strayed far from the team as he became a PGA Teaching Professional at Highlands Ranch Golf Club, home of Pioneer Golf. In 2012 he rejoined the program stepping into the role of Assistant Coach on the Women’s Team. It was no surprise that on June 17, someone with such strong ties was named Head Coach after Eric Hoos stepped down after 15 years with the program. “I am extremely grateful for this opportunity,” Billinger noted in the DU Press Release. “My family and I are Pioneers to the core and I will do everything in my power to serve and provide value to this program. I want to wish Coach Hoos all the best with his future endeavors and thank him for all he has done for this program and for me personally. I look forward to getting to know all the guys better, both as golfers and as young men. I thank the DU golf community for believing in me to lead this program going forward.” Billinger, the 2008 Dow Finsterwald Player of the Year and the 2010 and 2012 Colorado PGA Teacher of the Year, takes over DU program that had a strong 2014 campaign. They opened the season with a win at the Ram Masters Invitational in September and finished the year taking home the Summit League Championship.

Kyle Voska Takes Todd Creek Golf Club Pro Am As the Section Championship draws near, this was a great opportunity for Professionals to get familiar with the Todd Creek Golf Club. The course was set-up very similar to how the Section Championship will be set-up in September. Kyle Voska, PGA Assistant Professional at The Links Golf Course posted an impressive four-under-par 68 to squeeze by for the victory over Rick Cole, PGA Head Professional at Eaton Country Club and Rudy Castaneda, PGA Head Professional at Indian Tree Golf Club who both tied for second at 3-under-par 69. On the team side, Rudy Castaneda led his team to the victory with a team score of twenty-under-par 116. Geoff Keffer’s team, Assistant Professional at Murphy Creek Golf Club, finished in second place with an 18-under-par 118. Chad Novak, Assistant Professional at Walking Stick Golf Course, and his team rounded out the top three teams at 14-under-par 122. This was the first event of the year with the team format of 3-2-1, which led to almost 90% of the field under-par. To view the full results click here.

Loeffler Notches Victory at Eagle-Vail Golf Club Pro Am The course was in great shape and conditions held out for the 10 am shotgun start. Bill Loeffler, PGA Owner at Highlands Ranch Golf Club, posted a 1-over-par 72 to take home the victory. Bill edged out David DiMartino, PGA Head Professional at Aspen Golf Club, who put together a 2-over-par 73. Rick Cole, PGA Head Professional at Eaton Country Club, continued with his solid play this summer and rounded out the top three with a 76. On the team side, the home field advantage held true as David Thompson’s team scored an impressive 16-under-par 126 for victory. Rick Cole finished behind To view the full results click here.

Vlosich Qualifies for Fourth U.S. Senior Open These days it seems as that if there is a senior event in the state, a Colorado PGA Professional will make his way towards the top. The U.S. Senior Open Qualifier at Fox Hollow Golf Club was a perfect example. Ron Vlosich, a PGA Life Member and former Head Professional at Green Gables Country Club, posted six birdies on the day to climb up the leaderboard early in the day. Vlosich posted six-birdies on the day and two bogies to shoot a four-under-par 67. His round could have been even better as he three-putted the 17th hole, for par, and had to make a six-foot bogey putt at the last after hitting his tee shot into a hazard. Only one player was able to make a charge on the day. Steve Schneiter, a PGA Professional from Sandy, Utah posted nine-birdies on the day, none more important that on holes 17 and 18, to clip Vlosich by one stroke. While those six birdies weren’t quite enough to capture medalist honors, Vlosich finished alone in second and qualified for the 2014 U.S. Senior Open. A five-time Dow Finsterwald Colorado PGA Player of the Year, Ron is no stranger to Major Championship golf. He has qualified and competed in a U.S. Open, a PGA Championship, three U.S. Senior Opens and two Senior PGAs. The U.S. Senior Open will be contested July 7-13, 2014 at Oak Tree National Golf Club in Edmond, Oklahoma.

2014 New Groove Rule Change Update on Grooves In 2010, the United States Golf Association created a condition of competition for golf club grooves and punch marks that organizations could implement which reduced volume and sharpness for all clubs except drivers and putters. Since then, the Colorado PGA Section has not elected to implement that condition as it was more of a recommendation than a requirement. However, for 2014, the policy will change for three Colorado PGA major Championships. The PGA of America now requires that at any qualifying event for the three PGA of America National Championships, the condition of competition must be used. So, please prepare to use conforming equipment at the following events: Colorado Senior PGA Professional Championship – Heritage Eagle Bend Golf & Country Club–August 18-19 National Car Rental Colorado PGA Assistants Professional Championship The Ranch Country Club – August 4-5 Colorado PGA Professional Championship – Heritage Todd Creek Golf Club – September 8-9 If you need to research equipment, please visit www.usga.org/grooves or contact us at the Colorado PGA.

What’s in the Bag?

This month we are feauting PGA Head Professional Ari Papadopolous from the Norman Course at Red Sky Golf Club. Ari attended the PGM Program at Penn State University and was elected to Membership in 2008. He recently competed in his first PGA Professional National Championship in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and made the cut, finishing tied for 61st. “My first PNC was an amazing and unforgettable experience,” he noted following the event. “The PGA of America did a fantastic job with all aspects of the event. Overall, I’m happy with my performance.” “I got off to a great start. After 26 holes I was 3-under total, and in the top 3. My name was on the leaderboard, and I was being followed by photographers. It was such an awesome feeling!” “As the week went on, the rain, pin placements, and tee placements made the courses long and very hard especially when the wind was blowing. It was mentally and physically challenging. In an event of this magnitude, you are playing against the best PGA professionals so you have to play flawless golf.”

The event hosted families from across the Black Hills Region and included a skills challenge that tested the attendees ability to master the core skills of the game, Driving, Chipping, and Putting. At each station, PGA Professionals from around the area were present to offer instruction and advice, showcasing the value and skillset of the PGA Professional. PGA Head Golf Professional Craig Hatch partnered with local business to provide complimentary burgers, brats, and ice cream to the attendees, creating a welcoming, family-friendly experience. The event was well received by the residents of the area, and continues to build a solid foundation for more events to come. The Colorado PGA’s borders extend beyond the state’s borders and includes PGA Members and PGA Recognized facilities on the eastern side of Wyoming as well as the cities of Spearfish and Rapid City in South Dakota.
