Thank You... My Fellow Professionals, This past Monday May 26th we celebrated Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday in our country for remembering the men and women who died while serving in our country’s armed forces. The holiday, which is celebrated every year on the final Monday of May, was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. As we celebrate and honor the men and women who died in service to our country, let us always remember that freedom is not free. It comes with a cost. I would personally like to thank all of the Colorado PGA Professionals who were able to join us this past Wednesday May 21st for our Annual IVY Pro Am at Fort Carson. For many of us it has become an annual highlight of our year as we honor the men and women who serve our country. If you have never attended this event please allow me to encourage you to put it on your calendar for next year. It’s a great day for everyone involved! The focus of our Colorado PGA Foundation is Golf in Schools, Supporting our Military, Growth of the Game Grants and College Scholarships. Over the next several weeks we will be hosting several fund-raising events in support of our Foundation. On June 6th & 7th we will be partnering with Colorado Avid Golfer Magazine for the Corporate Cup at Red Sky Ranch. On July 29th we will be hosting our Annual Foundation Pro Am at the Eisenhower Golf Club and in August we hope to host a Colorado PGA Foundation Invitational. I would like to thank all of you have donated items in support of the Corporate Cup. Please allow me to encourage all of you to consider bringing a team to the Foundation Pro Am at Eisenhower. I guarantee you and your team will have a great day playing the historical Blue Golf Course. There will be plenty of everything to make it a great day in support of all the great programs that are supported through our Colorado PGA Foundation. If you know a veteran, be sure to thank them for their service. Thanks to them and those we honor on Memorial Day, we all enjoy the freedoms we have in these United States of America. My personal thanks not only goes to these men and women, they also go to all of you for all the great things you do through the game of golf in making a positive difference in the lives of others. May God Bless the Men and Women of our Armed Forces, our Veterans, and their families, and may He Bless you and your families. As always, please let us know how we can be of any service to you. VR,

Eddie

Tournament Corner

Justin Limon, PGA | Tournament Manager Rorhbaugh Comes Up Just Short in Repeat Bid One of the toughest things to do in all of sports is to repeat as a champion. That held true for the HealthONE Colorado Senior Open as nobody has repeated in it’s 15 year history. Doug Rohrbaugh, PGA Head Professional at Ironbridge Golf Club attempted to change that his past week at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club. Rohrbaugh had his work cut out for him coming off a missed cut in the Senior PGA Championship in Benton Harbor, Michigan though. That seemed not to matter as Rorhbaugh fired rounds of sat tied with Texan Ron Shroeder with two holes to go during the final round. It was on the 17th green that fate turned it’s ugly head on Rorhbaugh as he three-putted to give his opponent a one-stroke lead. The powers to be gave Rohrbaugh a chance at redemption though as Schroeder pulled his tee shot on the long par-5 18th into the hazard. He took the opportunity and ran with it as he piped his drive down the fairway. Rohrbaugh was in prime position to attack the par-5 and did so with a second shot that ended up just past the flag off the green. It was then that Rohrbaugh’s short game let him down, much like it had done all week. Schroeder went on to save a par from 8 feet, while Rohrbaugh couldn’t take advantage of the opportunity and made bogey. “All that said, I’m certainly disappointed in the finish (on Friday). To be tied with two to go ... He hit it into the hazard on the last hole so I thought I had a chance. But my second shot was awful. I was trying to put it in front of the green. That wasn’t that difficult a shot. But I hooked it, and I was trying to hit a little cut actually.” Rohrbaugh and fellow Colorado PGA professional Mike Northern of Colorado Springs tied for second at 216, while Ron Vlosich of Lakewood and Tim Thelen of College Station, Texas shared fourth place at 217. For the full results of the event, please click here.

Holmes and Schalk Partner to Take Myran Craig Pro-Pro Championship Matt Schalk, PGA Director of Golf and Perry Holmes, PGA Instructor at Colorado National Golf Club partnered together to win the 2014 Myran Craig Pro-Pro Championship. The 36-hole event featured Modified Stableford Scoring and two separate formats: Four Ball Stroke Play and Foursome Stroke Play. Holmes and Schalk were able to post 88 points on the day to distance themselves from the field. Coming in second place on the day was the host PGA Head Professional Graham Cliff and his partner, Erik Billinger. Click here to access the full results.

Ivy Pro-Am Another Success On Wednesday, May 21st, 30 PGA Professionals from across the Section joined active duty, retired, veteran and wounded warriors for a morning of learning and an afternoon of golf hosted by PGA Master Professional Frank Jacobsen at Cheyenne Shadows Golf course at Fort Carson. The morning began with a visit to with LTC Aaron Termain, the commander of the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Carson. The WTB is a special unit that specializes in caring for those soldiers who have been injured in the line of duty and are in some way limited from contributing to the mission of their “home” unit. Once transferred to the WTB, soldiers receive rehabilitation, coping strategies, and in many cases, new skills that will serve them in the future if they are unable to return to their unit. Joined by PGA Professional Mike O’Donnell, members of the Board of Directors as well as Executive Director Eddie Ainsworth and Player Development Director, Keith Soriano, met with LTC Termain to present the PGA HOPE rehabilitation model that the Section has recently embraced. The Commander, a golfer himself, immediately saw and understood the benefits of the program our Members can offer and has extended an invitation to plan a PGA HOPE program for the 200 members of his Warrior Transition Battalion and their families. Exposure events and programs will begin at the Company level within the next two months. The tournament was preceded by lunch provided by Chipotle, and an informal instructional period as PGA Members walked the range tee assisting the over 120 soldiers with swing tips. The range echoed with laughter and good cheer as the hour wore on. The team at Cheyenne Shadows secured prizes for each hole during the event as well as for the three flights. Despite a brief hailstorm, the tournament was an absolute blast for all involved. Cigars and Seagram’s Sweet Iced Tea kept everyone in good spirits and the golf course was in outstanding shape. Thanks to all of our PGA Members and especially our Military Heroes for making the Ivy ProAm a success once again!

Junior Golf

Erin Diegel, PGA | Junior Golf Director

The calendar at The Colorado PGA indicates that SUMMER is HERE! With Team Golf events under way and the first Colorado PGA Junior Tour event scheduled for Monday, June 2 in Fort Collins, we are well on our way to what promises to be a dynamic season in Junior Golf. The excitement of Lucy Li, an 11 year old girl making golf history by becoming the youngest player to qualify for the US Women’s Open, brings confidence that our presence and opportunities in the junior golf world are making a difference. From Golf in Schools to summer camps to Drive, Chip and Putt, to Team Golf to Junior Tour to the Colorado PGA Junior championship, there is a place for everyone. Please visit our website at www.coloradopgajuniorgolf.com to see where you fit in.

Hyland Hills Ballers Win First Team Golf Event On May 17th, 50 families came out to Hyland Hills Golf Course in Westminster to experience a whole new spin on the game of golf. The inaugural Colorado PGA Team Golf tournament boasted great weather, family fun, comraderie and a HOLE-IN-ONE! Yes, that’s right, Mia Blackard from the Hyland Hills Golf Ballers, made her second hole in one at the age of 11 on hole #9 on the Blue Course using a Sand Wedge. The results for the event are as follows: *1st Place- The Hyland Hills Golf Ballers (*Scorecard Playoff) 2nd Place - Timm Golf Academy- Putt 4 Dough 3rd Place - Buffalo Run Thunder The laid back approach of Team Golf invites kids ages 7-14 of all abilities to come experience the fun of the game. Modified yardages and 8 inch cups are a couple of the draws for these youngsters. They are grouped into teams of 6 and then paired with a partner to enjoy a 9-hole scramble. “I love playing as part of a team. When my game isn’t all that, I know I am not alone and that helps everyone have more fun.”- John M. Age 12 The results for the event can be found at www.coloradopgajuniorgolf.com as well as a list of upcoming events. If you are interested in fielding a team or participating on a team, please contact Erin Diegel, Junior Golf Director at ediegel@pgahq.com.

It is also a busy month for our Colorado PGA Golf in Schools Program and the professionals that conduct them. We reached 3500 students in May and with the cooperative weather were able to transition 85% of those kids to a golf facility!! May 28th wrapped up the last field trip for the year and was a home run for the 250 students at Timberline Elementary School in Aurora. The kids enjoyed miniature golf, Birdie Ball Pitching, chipping and Full swing at Family Sports Center after experiencing three sessions in their PE classes at school. They offered a huge fist pump to our sponsors, PGA Professionals and teachers.

Player Development

Keith Soriano, PGA | Player Develeopment Director

Employee Talent Development

The Player Development department has been working with Elevation Corporate Health to connect PGA Professionals with prominent businesses in their markets. Elevation is a fitness company that is contracted to run the health and wellness programs at many companies throughout the Front Range. By highlighting the health, wellness and team development benefits of golf, which include burning 2,000 calories while walking 18 holes, covering 5 miles during a casual round of golf, and participating in a team-building Get Golf Ready clinic, Elevation Corporate Health has invited PGA Professionals into their sphere of influence. Exposure events, consisting of two indoor/outdoor hitting bays staffed by PGA Professionals conducting 10 minute lessons at the business location, have already been conducted with great success at Hunter Douglas Corporation in Broomfield, and Level 3 Communications in Superior. June will see exposure events at Trizetto Company in Centennial and T. Rowe Price in Colorado Springs. July has already been tagged for IBM Corporation in Longmont. These events serve as the jumping off point for employee specific GGR programs and leagues to be held at YOUR facility. By meeting the consumer at their place of business to introduce them to the game of golf, we break down some of the barriers that keep people from enjoying the benefits of golf. Like the team at your facility, each of these companies are seeking ways to create a team-first environment at their business. Get Golf Ready, when used as a team-building and talent development tool can do just that. As employees engage in a new experience like golf together, their mutual triumphs and struggles throughout the process serve to bind them closer together. In addition, the acquisition of a new skill can serve the long-term interests of the company, as golf so often serves as a medium for the conduct of business and networking. If you want to be a part of any of the Colorado PGA/Elevation Corporate Health exposure events coming up, or if you have a business in your area that you want to connect with, contact Keith Soriano, PGA at ksoriano@pgahq.com or 720.841.1006.

It’s time to #GetInWhereYouFitIn with PGA programs. Click below to get registered.

Drive, Chip & Putt

Drive, Chip & Putt Volunteers Needed! Drive Chip & Putt was a resounding success at Augusta National Golf Club. While everyone was watching juniors pound their tee shot, use deft touch around the greens, and stroke a smoot putt on the 18th green, something else was going on! People were working behind the scenes to make sure the event went off without a hitch! For the 2014 season we are looking for up to 20 volunteers at each of the local qualifiers to help out. We are looking for positions in each area of the Championship. If you are interested in volunteering, whether you are a Colorado PGA Professional, an Amateur, or simply someone looking to get involved, please reach out to Erin Diegel, PGA Junior Golf Director at ediegel@ pgahq.com.

Colorado PGA Foundation

Colorado PGA Foundation Pro Am Coming Up Soon The 2014 Colorado PGA Foundation Pro Am will be held on Tuesday, July 29 on the Blue Course at the Eisenhower Golf Club at the Air Force Academy. This annual fundraiser for the Colorado PGA Foundation tournament is a Shamble with three amateurs and one PGA Professional forming a team. The event will include a few fundraisers to help raise money for the Colorado PGA Foundation. We will be hosting a small silent auction, a skins game with the money split between the winners and the Colorado PGA Foundation, as well as hole prizes. The event, as in years past, will include breakfast, food on the course, and lunch following play. For more information and to register, please click here.
