President’s Message An Exciting June!
H
ello Fellow PGA Members & Apprentices, Hopefully, June will bring us much needed sun shine along with more rounds and revenue!! We have a lot of exciting things taking place in our Section and I have some wonderful news to share with you about our Foundation, Colorado PGA REACH. Through the leadership of our newly established Board of Trustees they have created three new scholarships to help support our future PGA Professionals and current Junior Golfers of Colorado. These scholarships are the Dow Finsterwald Scholarship, the Ann Finke Scholarship and the Colorado PGA Reach Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship. Complete details on these and how to apply are included in this newsletter. Congratulations go to Hannah Wherry, daughter of PGA Member Doug Wherry for being named our 2015 PGA of America National Scholarship Winner and to Nathan Parry, son of PGA Member CJ Parry, and Tyler Sloan, son of PGA Member Mike Sloan for being awarded the Colorado PGA REACH Marion Pfluger Scholarship. In addition to these outstanding students we have an additional eight more children of Colorado PGA Professionals being awarded the Colorado PGA REACH Scholarship that I would also like to congratulate. Much thanks needs to go to our Board of Trustees for their great leadership and support as we continue to impact lives through golf. At this time I am pleased to announce the newest Colorado PGA Reach Trustee, Navy Captain Lisa Putvin. Lisa has served in the United States Navy for over 30 years and currently maintains the rank of Captain. Welcome aboard Lisa! We look forward to working with you.

Finally, I’m excited to have received a personal invitation from the PGA of America’s CEO, Pete Bevacqua, to represent the Colorado Section at the KPMG Ladies Leadership Summit on June 10th at Westchester Country Club in Rye, NY. This one day Summit is in conjunction with the new KPMG Women’s PGA Championship which is a joint event established by KPMG, the LPGA Tour & the PGA of America. The speakers consist of CEO’s from companies like KPMG, Duke Energy and the Golf Channel, as well as, professional golfers Stacy Lewis and Annika Sorenstam. NBC and Golf Channel host, Dan Hicks will be closing the day in a Fireside Chat with Dr. Condoleezza Rice, 66th Secretary of State. I’m looking forward to this opportunity and will represent the Colorado Section proudly. As always, we would love to hear from you. M
y Fellow Colorado PGA Professionals,
Thank You to all of you who are impacting lives through the game of golf. It still amazes me the impact that golf can make. This Spring Semester for our Section's Golf in Schools Program we will have reached almost 10,000 kids with over 80% of them making it to a Golf Course for a Field Trip and for the upcoming Fall Semester we have just approved close to $50,000.00 worth of programming! Truly a record for both Semesters and for the calendar year. For the upcoming season for PGA Junior League we have seen tremendous growth with close to 60 teams ready to compete, we have record participation in our PGA Summer Camps, our PGA Junior Tour's first event is this week, and we are all set to go with this year's Drive, Chip, and Putt qualifiers. You are truly making a difference in the lives of our youth throughout the Colorado Section. We are so proud of our relationship with the Men & Women of our Military, especially those at Fort Carson with the Warrior Transition Battalion, and for Paul Surniak and all the PGA Professionals at Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club. Through their tireless work with our soldiers we are all set to begin our second year of PGA HOPE at Fort Carson and extremely excited to launch a PGA HOPE Chapter in conjunction with the Denver VA and also with the City of Grand Junction. What a privilege it is for us as PGA Professionals to give back to those who have faithfully served our country. To all of you who made it out to this year's "IVY" Pro Am, You Are Awesome!! To most of us not a great day to play golf, but to a Soldier, any day they get to play is a good day. My thanks to each and every one of you for honoring these men and women with your time. It was greatly appreciated, I can assure you.
It is truly a privilege for me to serve as your Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director. I'm so proud to represent all of you and talk about all the great things you are accomplishing. These things will not only positively impact the lives of others, they will also impact the business of golf and help to grow rounds and revenue. I'm praying for great weather and record rounds/business of golf in June for each and every one of you. If you need help in any way please do not hesitate to call on me or any of our staff as we are here to serve and assist you. My thanks to each and every one of you for Impacting Lives Through Golf and my thanks for the opportunity to serve. All My Best. VR,

I
f you are like me, June 1 will be a warm welcomed day, after a cold and wet month of May in Colorado.

The program will also feature, avid golfer Dr. Condoleezzaa Rice. Also in attendance will be Colorado Section of the PGA President Leslie Core Drevecky. Kerry Haigh and his world class staff will manage the championship, working closely with the LPGA to provide a championship experience for the participants. Utah Section Members – Matt Baird, Zach Johnson, Chris Moody, Steve Schnieter, Tommy Sharp, Tele Wrightman and Dustin Volk. Good luck to all. Prior to the PGA Professional National Championship, your National Board conducts a two-day planning session to drive forward the next year’s strategic priorities. PGA Championship Last month the PGA of America announced that it will be returning to Kiawah Island “Ocean Course” for the 2021PGA Championship. The top 20 PGA professionals will qualify to play at the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in August.
Also if you have not yet sent in your dues, you have until June 30 to pay and stay current.
I wish the best of luck to following PGA Members.

TaylorMade-adidas Ashworth and Adams on Board for Pro Assistant Championship I
f the Pro-Assistant Championship wasn’t already a premier event on the Colorado PGA schedule, there is no question it is now with the addition of TaylorMade-adidas Ashworth and Adams as a presenting sponsor. The company and its brands recently agreed to a partnership that establishes TaylorMade-adidas Ashworth Adams as a Silver Level Partner. Through the partnership, TaylorMade will add $2,500 to the overall purse while adidas Ashworth will outfit each player with their adidas 3-stripe 1/4 Zip layering piece. “Our PGA Members and Green Grass Professionals fight the good fight every day, and we want them to know that we’re a team and here to support them in every way,” noted Mike Mendoza, sales professional with TaylorMade. “This is our opportunity to help give back and show our appreciation for everything the Colorado Section and our PGA Members do for us.” “We always look for partnerships that are win-win-win; a win for our members, a win for the partner, and a win for the Section as a whole,” noted Eddie Ainsworth, Colorado PGA Executive Director. “This partnership
is exactly that! We look forward to having Mike Bryant, Mike Mendoza, and their company’s partner with us for 2015 and the foreseeable future.”
“I believe that the most important aspect of the golf business are the partnerships and relationships we all work to create on a daily basis” Mike Bryant, sales professional with Adidas Ashworth noted after the partnership came to life. “The stronger the partnership, the more we can all work together for the ultimate goal of a successful business. By supporting the PGA members, and this event, it is bringing the Colorado PGA and adidas Golf and Ashworth together in a stronger way.”

Potvin Added to Colorado PGA REACH Trustees W
ith six active military bases in Colorado, the Supporting our Military Pillar of Colorado PGA truly hits home here in the Centennial State. It makes perfect sense then to include representation of the Armed Forces on the Colorado PGA REACH Board of Trustees and with the recent addition of Captain Lisa Potvin, we have done just that. “Lisa is a perfect addition to our Colorado PGA REACH Trustees,” Eddie Ainsworth, PGA Executive Director had to say about the addition. “What she brings to the table with her military background and her business acumen is second to none!” Lisa has had a long and storied career serving our country. A native of Maine, Lisa served the United States Navy for over 30 years at Naval Air Station, North Island, Sand Diego, California, the Pentagon in Washington, DC. and at Naval Recruiting District, San Antonio, Texas. She left active duty in 1994 and affiliated in the Navy Reserves. Her reserve experience includes two recalls back to active duty. She was first recalled to United State Space Command in Colorado Springs after 9/11 for her cost analysis and financial management skills. Upon completion of the assignment in 2003, she became an Air Force employee at the newly established United State Northern Command in Colorado Springs, where she was instrumental in garnering resources for the Homeland Defense mission. Her second Reserve recall was to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, in 2006, where she was assigned as Program Director for the Navy Practical Comptrollership Course and a Lecturer for the Defense Financial Management Practice Course. She was awarded the Individual Achievement Award in Comptrollership by the Assistant Secretary of the

Navy for Financial Management and Comptrollership in 2009. She recently developed an award winning Advanced Comptroller Course for the new Deference Financial Management Certification Program. She is a two-time award winning Chief of Mission, leading the U.S. Armed Forces Delegation to two international military golf championship assignments.
As a civilian, she worked as Lead Cost Analyst and Capital Investment Planner for IBM in Boulder, Colorado, from 1998-2003. In this capacity, she provided expert business advice and cost analysis in support of the 1000-employee call center. She later designed a special planning process to provide a rapid response that would accommodate a new and unique business segment. The process was implements across the Americas division. She has been a Certified Defense Financial Manager with Acquisition since 2006. Lisa is a member of the Association of the United State Navy, the American Society of Military Comptrollers, Association of Accountants and Financial Professionals in Business, and Pikes Peak Roundtable. She resides in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Lisa is an avid golfer and also enjoys snowshoeing hiking, and yoga.
- Mark Bacheldor, PGA | Internship Coordinator UCCS PGA Golf Management
A
ll PGA Golf Professionals, when first starting out, face an internship or apprenticeship where they seek to learn not only the skills needed for their future career but also the intangible attributes of being a great PGA Golf Professional. Both are necessities for a young Professional and both require a great mentor to guide them along the way. The PGA Golf Management Program works with great intention to seek out those PGA Professionals who realize the great power of being a mentor and choose to live out that mission with their interns. This is a critical component of the program and one of the reasons the graduates of the program are some of the very best in the nation. So what does it take to create more than an internship and fully develop a mentorship opportunity for one of these students? Like all great things, it requires intentionality above all else. It takes a realization that students employed as interns are just that: students. They are there to learn, not to exercise their expertise. Just as they are not experts in the concepts of microeconomics on the first day of the semester, neither are they masters of TPP or the GHIN system or the scheduling of a reverse shotgun tournament or even customer service interactions. Rather, they are on internship to learn these things not taught in the classroom. And these things require that mentor: someone who takes the time to deliberately and patiently, teach these skills and more.
But PGA Professionals are busy during the golf season, I know. And it is easy to watch the golf season fly by, just playing catch up it seems each day. A season can pass and you realize that the learning moments you thought would occur each day never seemed to take place. This can easily happen but also can be combatted against. Again, it takes intentionality to set aside time and realize that teaching moments happen every single day. When a member has a complaint, for example, in which you address and solve, spend a moment with your intern to explain how you handled the situation, whether or not they were involved. Schedule a lunch with your intern to find out their interests and questions, and possibly their concerns. You may learn a lot while they are bound to learn even more. Play golf with the students. 4 hours on a golf course can tell you a lot about the character of a person. These are just some of the many opportunities that exist for supervisors seeking to be mentors to the next generation of PGA Golf Professionals.

Internship or Mentorship?
Each year, the PGA Golf Management Program sends out around 60-70 interns, with some completing 3-month level 1, summer internships and the rest completing level 2 or 3 internships, lasting 6+ months. Each one of those internships is an opportunity for the student to grow in their knowledge, experience, and professionalism. And each one of these interns is in need of a dedicated PGA Professional who is intentional in being not just a supervisor, but accepting the challenge to be a devoted, committed mentor.

Feeding the Youth Golf Lifecycle PGA Junior League Golf and Drive, Chip and Putt are helping grow the game at The CC of Colorado
T
he Country Club of Colorado is a unique facility. We have 370 golf members and 688 recreational members; a large tennis, fitness and aquatics presence; as well as an 18-hole golf course designed by Pete Dye. We have many young families join the club for the numerous programs we offer, with golf just one part of the experience. I have been at the facility for 30 years and have seen many changes, but one constant has been parents’ desires for their children to have opportunities to try a variety of sports. The goal of our youth golf player development programming is to directly impact new member activity and member retention. We have always made our junior program (pictured) available to all of our members, whether they have a golf or recreational membership. The more participation we have in the general program, the better we are able to sell parents on an upgrade to their membership. We restrict golf course access to youth en- rolled in the junior program much less today than we did 20 years ago. Participants have limited access to the course while programs are running, but if they want to come and play any other time they must be golf members. Our participation numbers have varied through the years, but we have always maintained at least 50-78 youth enrolled per session. I credit youth programming for providing additional teaching opportunities as well – 40 percent of the lesson I give are to youth. Understanding the need to keep those kids interested in golf, we recently began PGA Junior League Golf. We have partnered with three other facilities in our area to start a local league. I put the flyer out for a parent meeting and, honestly, was just hoping to get enough kids for a team. I was worried about the cost, the scheduling, etc. But all of my fears of getting PGA Junior League Golf started weren’t justified. We have enough interest in the first year for three teams, and I know if I want to have more teams there are many more families ready to sign up. Even the older, more experienced kids wish we were able to do an under-16 team. It’s such an appealing format for youth. PGA Junior League has become the hit of the early season for us.
16
Also added to our youth programming lineup is Drive, Chip and Putt. In July, we are hosting local qualifying for the 2016 National Finals. I certainly want to have our members take part, so we are holding after-school practice sessions designed to teach those skills to whoever wants to attend. Suddenly, we have two new smashing youth golf offerings to add to our existing programs, all with practice time and a way to measure their success. We will keep three PGA Professionals busy with the youth programming we have at our facility this spring and summer. And the best part is that the kids will learn all the necessary skills needed to become proficient golfers and have a great time doing it. We are involved with the community, as well, and take part in an area-wide youth golf league called the Pikes Peak Junior Association (PPJA). I have been instrumental in the association for the entire 30 years I have been at the club. It engages kids ages 10-18 in stroke member retention. The excitement and exposure of PGA Junior League Golf and Drive, Chip and Putt will help youth move into our PPJA events when they are ready for the next step in golf. I am very pleased that we have a way to systematically introduce, teach and retain youth golfers. It’s a great feeling to know families will be so pleased to call The Country Club of Colorado their home! Ann Finke, PGA director of instruction at The Country Club of Colorado in Colorado Springs, is a member of the PGA Youth Player Development Committee. She received the 2010 PGA Youth Player Development Award.

Why You Need to Track and Report Results - Keith Soriano, PGA N
ow that the season is upon us, it’s a good time to consider how you will track and report the effectiveness of your player development programs and their impact on your facility’s bottom line. The following excerpt from the Player Development Playbook offers some great tips on the why, how, and what of tracking and reporting. Your employer is interested in making money. If your programs are generating revenue, do you think your employer would like to know? Do you think this could help your job security? It is vital to capture key metrics on your student’s golf activity and to quantify the impact of your Player Development programs to your facility’s bottom line. This is a crucial step as it quantifies your skills as a revenue generator and the impact you’re making to the bottom-line number, which you’ll use in your communications to your employer. What to Track • How many new golfers have you developed and retained? •
How much have new golfers spent at your course?
• How many total rounds have new golfers played at your course?
• Number of students entering your Player Development programs • Number of golfers you’ve developed/retained (those students who then • Played a round after their instructional program with you) • Of the golfers retained, how many rounds have they played? • Revenue generated following player development programs • Include breakdown by various departments (golf fees, F&B, merchandise) • Consider reporting breakdown by targeted niche markets (women, families, etc.) To develop a tracking and reporting plan for player development at your facility, contact your Player Development Director, Keith Soriano, PGA at ksoriano@ pgahq.com.
Junior Golf SCHOOL’S OUT! Golf in School’s Gets A+ this Spring T
he numbers are in, and let’s just say the Colorado PGA received an A+ for its spring Golf in Schools session. This year we reached more than 4,500 students from 42 different schools across the state of Colorado. In 2014, the Colorado PGA reached about 4,800 students throughout the entire year. This means we are projected to double this number in 2015. Because of this exponential growth, our fall semester Golf in Schools programs will contribute to record breaking numbers this year.
18
Developing comprehensive reports quantifying your results could be the most important step in showing your value to your employer. Reporting should focus on detailing results that match the objectives that you had set forth in your Player Development program business plan. Some suggested results to report may include:
With the majority of our PGA Professionals offering follow-up programs throughout the summer, golf is reaching more kids now more than ever before. We are excited to see even more growth in other areas of the Colorado PGA Junior Golf because of the outreach from our Golf in Schools programs.

n the heels of the CBS Special, “PGA REACH – Impacting Lives Through Golf” that aired prior to the Saturday round of the Wells Fargo Championship and featured the PGA HOPE program run by PGA Professional Paul Surniak at Cheyenne Shadows Golf Course, PGA Professional Kirk Mease and the team at Wellshire Golf Club have agreed to host the Denver VA Chapter of PGA HOPE. PGA HOPE, a 5-8 week program that utilizes golf as a recreation, rehabilitation, and reconnection medium for active duty, veteran, and retired servicemen and women with disabilities, will begin in mid-July at Wellshire Golf Club. Sessions will include PGA Professional instruction by the team at Wellshire Golf Club as well as fellow Members and Apprentices from around the Denver Metro area, including the team from Inverness Golf Club. Sessions will capitalize on the First Tee of Denver’s Short Course at Wellshire to help students have extended on-course and situational lessons.
In advance of the PGA HOPE program at Wellshire, Kirk Mease has partnered with the Orthotic and Prosthetic Activities Foundation (OPAF) to offer adaptive training techniques for golf professionals. The training will be conducted at Wellshire Golf Club on Saturday, June 20th from 9:00am-12:00pm. Golf Professionals, therapists, and physical trainers are invited to attend and may register by visiting www.opafonline.org .

hile the weather was certainly cold and wet at Colorado Golf Club for the Myran Craig Pro-Pro Championship, the competition was sizzling during the first championship of the year. Kyle Voska, PGA Assistant Professional and Bill Loeffler, PGA Owner, both at The Links Golf Course in Highlands Ranch, outlast the field to win the event with 82 points in the Modified Stableford Championship. “I was cold virtually all day,” Voska noted after the round. “With those conditions, hitting fairways was key. We both drove the ball great missing only a few fairways each all day. And, that’s a huge key at the course. It’s very easy to make big numbers if you’re off the fairway. We obviously hit a few good iron shots and made a few putts, but we set ourselves up for a lot of pars by hitting most fairways.” During the first round of Four Ball Stroke Play the duo played off one another very well by making six birdies and just two bogies to earn 46 points. “Bill is very steady. He doesn’t have the length he once did, but he’s in every hole which frees me up,” noted Voska of their team philosophy. “Having him in good position on some of the par 5’s allows me to be pretty aggressive.” Their strong play put them just three points behind the team of Mike Weingartner, PGA Head Professional and Paul Schmeling, Assistant Professional from The Ridge at Castle Pines North who tallied 49 points in the opening round. For final round the players competed in Foursome Stroke Play (alternate shot) which typically is a much

more challenging format and the scores certainly backed that up. Voska and Loeffler relied on a more conservative approach during the final round to post 36 points and pull ahead of the field. “We played more conservatively to the middle of the greens because it was hard to hit the ball solid, so going at the pins didn’t make sense,” noted Voska of their final round. “Par was a great score on every hole outside of the par 5’s where you had to try to make birdies.” Coming in second place was the team from Cherry Hills Country Club of John Ogden, PGA Head Professional and Joe Brown, PGA Assistant Professional. The duo had arguably the most impressive final round of the championship as they made six birdies in the alternate shot format.
Myran Craig, former Colorado PGA Executive Director Myran Craig was born in Denver in 1929. At Denver South High School, Myran made a mark for himself as one of the finest all-around athletes in the nation, lettering in four sports. He showed such promise as a baseball player that Ty Cobb came to Colorado specifically to recruit him. Golf has been a part of his life since he graduated from the University of Denver in 1951. From 1953-1969 Myran was a teacher and coach at East High School. He became directly involved with golf in 1969 when he went to work for Paul McMullen at Aurora Hills Golf Course.
In 1973 Myran became executive director of the joint Colorado Golf Association and Colorado Section of the PGA. When the two organizations split in 1978, Myran remained the PGA Section's executive director, and he stayed in that role until 1995. That makes him the longest-serving person ever in that position. While Myran was executive director, membership in the Colorado PGA increased nearly 250 percent. Before joining the Colorado PGA and the CGA, he was head professional at South Suburban Golf Course.
