We Have A Lot to Look Forward To!

I

’m sure all of you are getting ready for the upcoming season which is right around the corner. I would like to take a moment to give you an update on the Spring Business Meeting and a few other things to look forward to this season. One very important aspect of our Spring Business Meeting will be the election of three new Board of Directors that will be sworn in at our Fall Business Meeting in October. This year we have nine very accomplished and qualified PGA Members who are seeking election. I would like to challenge all of you to become familiar with each candidates’ bio, which you will find in the Spring Meeting Section of this newsletter, and if you have any questions for any of the candidates, don’t hesitate to reach out to them. Each year the Colorado Section Board of Directors is pressed to make important decisions on Membership issues, Section finances, as well as, Junior Golf & Player Development programs. These are only a few reasons that it is up to the Colorado Section Members to elect the best candidates to serve on the Board of Directors. In addition, I realize that all of you are aware that the current MSR cycle ends on June 30th of this year.

The Colorado Section currently has 63.2% of its Members who have all of their required points. The National average of Members with all of their MSR requirements is only 55% so once again the Colorado Section is above average in another traceable statistic. For those of you in need of points, if you attend the 2 hour Business Meeting, you will receive 2 MSR points. And if you attend the Education Seminar which will be presented by a Dale Carnegie representative, you will receive 2 additional MSR points. As always, if you have any questions for any of the Section Officers, Board of Directors of Section Administration Staff, please don’t hesitate to contact any of us. We are here to “Serve the Members and Grow the Game”. Sincerely,

Leslie Core-Drevecky, PGA President – Colorado PGA Section Certified Head Golf Professional Murphy Creek Golf Course Aurora, Colorado lcore@auroragov.org Direct Line: 303-361-7305

PGA of America Update MSR’s, Properties, and Much More! National PGA Board Planning Session During the first week of March, the National PGA Officers, Board of Directors, Executive Staff and Senior Directors will spend four days at PGA of America Headquarters for the annual Board Planning Session. The Long-Term Strategic Plan will serve as the road map to follow, as we look to “Serve the Member and Grow the Game.” MSRs As a reminder, June 15, 2015, is the end of the current MSR cycle. Are you still short on your MSR requirements? If so, please login to the new PGA.org. Then, go to the Education Link and the Complimentary PGA Required MSR Link. Here, you can view videos and testing that can enable you to earn 1 or 2 MSR credits per course. You are able to watch as many as 10 videos, and take a test on each to earn your PGA-required MSR credits. Another way to earn a MSR credit is to go to PGA.org, and update your profile. This will earn you 1 MSR credit in the “Service” Category. If you have any questions, now is the time to contact the PGA Membership Department or your Section Executive Director to avoid going to Class F on July 1, 2015. Don’t wait until June, when time will be running out. Port St. Lucie, Florida Recently, the Dye Course at PGA Golf Club was ranked 19th in Golf Digest’s Florida Rankings. The Wanamaker Course was ranked 32nd; and the Ryder Course shared the 34th spot. Meanwhile, the new concept of turning St. Lucie Trail Golf Club into a high-value, public facility has proven to be a huge success. The PGA Golf Club clubhouse is on schedule to be

4

completed this summer… and on budget. Between the new golf course equipment and better agronomy practices and staffing, we have already seen the following results: • An increase in rounds of golf by 3,000, as compared to the same threemonth period during the winter last year. • Rave reviews of golf course conditions and quality of service by the Staff. These high marks have come from PGA Members who live and play at PGA Golf Club. •

A facility for which PGA Members are proud.

Congratulations to PGA Golf Properties General Manager Jimmy Terry and Golf Course Superintendent Dick Gray and their staff for all their efforts! Centennial Celebration As we approach our Centennial Celebration, plans are already underway to celebrate our 100th year in 2016. There will be a 100-day celebration, starting with the PGA Merchandise Show in January. One of the critical components of this celebration is that we will develop a Section Spotlight feature on Golf Channel for each of the 41 PGA Sections. PGA.org Through a year-long and extremely collaborative process, PGA.org was launched at the PGA Merchandise Show. The change from PGA Links to PGA.org has the following benefits for PGA Members and Apprentices: • Personalized features that allow you to customize content and tools to fit your unique needs. • A simplified experience to help you find the content and tools that you need. • Enhanced tools to make teaching the game and managing a facility easier from any device, desktop,

Once you login, you can go to the Website Guide, which will take you through the site to make sure you are taking advantage of every possible tool to grow as a PGA Professional and grow your business. KPMG Women’s Championship This June will mark the first KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Westchester Country Club in New York. PGA Professionals Karen Paolozzi, Alison Curdt and Laurie Rinker will represent the PGA of America in the Championship. All three qualified through the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Championship. This is a tremendous opportunity, as we partner with KPMG and the LPGA to increase awareness of our brands, and continue to grow the game of golf. During the week, KPMG also will conduct a Leadership Summit on development, advancement and empowerment of women, both on and off the golf course. The PGA will be well represented by PGA Secretary Suzy Whaley and Independent Director Dottie Pepper, who will serve on the KPMG Leadership Advisory Council, along with other notable business leaders. Player Development As we are all preparing our Player Development programs for 2015, please see a few measurable numbers below that you can compare with your program. Whether you have a Get Golf Ready (GGR) program or you’ve tailored a Player Development program that fits the needs of your facility, these figures are encouraging:

With all of your efforts over the past few years, we are starting to move the needle and make a difference! PGA Scholarship Program Since the inception of the PGA Scholarship Program, roughly $5.7 million in scholarships have been awarded to more than 2,800 deserving students. Established in 1986, the program provides college scholarships for children and grandchildren of PGA members. It encourages and promotes the attainment of higher educational goals, based on evidence of a high level of academic achievement. Last year alone, this program awarded 140 scholarships totaling $325,000. In 2014, PGA Members contributed $130,000 to the fund! Unfortunately, due to tax regulations, the PGA cannot directly contribute to this fund. To make a contribution to be part of this great program, you can send a check to PGA of America Headquarters made out to the PGA Financial Assistance Scholarship Fund or mark the pre-populated voluntary contribution box that is provided with your dues invoice. Please feel free to call or email me if you have any questions. Have a great start to the golf season! Sincerely,

Colorado PGA REACH – Serving Others & Serving Our PGA Members W

hat’s your passion? What gets you up in the morning and going? All of us probably have different thoughts when we are first asked this question, but one thing that I am certain of is that we all find joy and fulfilment in helping, in serving others. Think about it. How do you feel when you are able to help someone? It makes you feel good doesn’t it!?! If you’re a parent you can probably easily remember a time when you were able to provide something for your child that they really needed. It probably gave you a sense of accomplishment and joy deep down in your heart. I’m sure there is some scientific definition of what actually takes place when one human being helps another, but all I know is that I personally feel a sense of satisfaction and peace. That is what Colorado PGA REACH is all about. Helping and serving others. We use the game of golf as a vehicle to help and serve others while making a positive impact in their lives. Hopefully you’ve had the opportunity to read and learn about the three pillars that guide us in making this impact. I’ve provided a brief overview of our “Youth Development Pillar” and our “Supporting Our Military Pillar”, and next week I will provide you a brief overview of our “Diversity & Inclusion Pillar”. Through these three pillars we can most definitely make a positive impact by serving others, but what really inspires me is that we can not only serve others, we can serve our PGA Members as well. Through each and every one of these pillars we can make a positive difference in the lives of others, but we can also make a positive

difference in the lives of our PGA Professionals because through the programs of Colorado PGA REACH we will be introducing new players to the game of golf and creating new revenue opportunities for the future. Serving others. I believe this is part of our DNA. I know it must be part of mine as I receive the most joy in helping another, the example my Father set before me. I truly am honored to serve as your Executive Director. I look forward to seeing each and every one of you at our upcoming Spring Membership Meeting on March 23rd.. In the meantime, please let us know if we can serve or assist you in any way. Very Respectfully,

Eddie

Collaboration the Name of the Game at G4 Summit M

ore than 300 Colorado PGA Professionals and industry affiliated people came together for the 2015 G4 Summit at the Broadmoor on Tuesday, February 10, 2015. The event brought together the four governing bodies of golf in Colorado, the Colorado PGA; the Colorado Golf Association and the Colorado Women’s Golf Association, the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Golf Course Superintendents Association, and the Mile High Chapter of the Club Managers Association of America. The summit was meant to foster a collaborative effort of all these organizations to address some of the threats to our business while also hearing from some of the leaders of the industry.

Hunki Yun, the Director of Strategic Projects at the USGA began the presentation portion of the day with an upbeat discussion on a rather dull subject, Pace of Play. He noted USGA efforts to study and incorporate technology in the fight against slow play. Items like GPS trackers with individual groups and flagsticks that monitor play certainly exhibited their drive to address the problem. Also presenting at the Summit was PGA of America Senior Director of Diversity and Inclusion Sandy Cross. Her presentation touch on the importance of understanding and incorporating generational attributes in trying to attract young, middle-aged and older players. With golf facing an uphill battle with Gen X’ers and Millennials, Cross noted that "marketing must evolve. We have to adapt."

Pete Bevaqcua, PGA of America CEO, was the keynote speaker of the day. He addressed the possibilities that he sees working each day when industry organizations come together for the common good, much like they did that day. "And I think collaboration is at an all-time high," Bevaqcua noted of the PGA, PGA Tour, USGA, and many others. "The collaboration is better than it's ever been," noted Eddie Ainsworth, executive director of the Colorado PGA. "We're in control of our future, and I'm excited about it."

To conclude the Summit, Bevaqua, Cross, and Yun were joined on stage by J.D. Dockstader, Chief Business Development Officer of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, for a panel discussion. Led by Jim Keegan, Principal and Chief Strategist at Golf Convergence, the group addressed a plethora of industry questions and handled a few “curve balls” with ease. While the discussion pointed out many issues within the industry, the group effort of the four showed how working together can truly make a difference. 2016 G4 Summit A tentative agreement has been made with the Broadmoor to host the G4 Summit and Teaching and Coaching Summit again in 2016. The G4 Summit will be held on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 and the Teaching and Coaching Summit will follow on Wednesday, February 17, 2016.

“I think that Pete had a lot of good things to say and that he seems to actually understand that the members make the PGA what it is and not the other way around. It seems like we have been missing that feel for a while from National.” Jason Brandt, PGA Director of Golf The Links Golf Course Highlands Ranch, CO

“I was impressed with PGA CEO Pete Bevacqua and how business oriented he is. As "Experts in the game and business of golf", PGA Members can sleep soundly knowing that Pete is looking out for our best interest in any venture that he considers putting our name on.” Tom Buzbee, PGA Head Professional Gypsum Creek Golf Course Gypsum, CO

“The G4 summit was excellent on many different levels. One of the things that I enjoyed the most was talking to other professionals at the end of the event and during lunch and getting an understanding of what they found most interesting for their clubs. For myself and Colorado Golf Club, the most impactful take away was the impact of the PGA Junior League. (We) enjoyed the video presentation along with the interviews of the children on how impactful the league was to them. We have already had 2 follow up phone calls with PGA (Junior League) and we look forward to becoming a part of the Junior Leagues for this season.

W

hether it was his story of competing with Arnold Palmer and Don January, his simple guidelines to the short game, or his ideas on how to fix the Ryder Cup, one this is for sure, Dave Stockton thrilled those in attendance at the 2015 Teaching and Coaching Summit. Stockton began his discussion from the floor, not the stage typically used for the seminar, by highlighting what his keys to a successful short game are. One thing that seemed to catch the attendees off guard was a simple, quick drill to open the seminar; a drill he has each of his students do. Attendees were told to sign their name on a piece of paper just as they would do time and time again during the day. They were then asked to take their time and deliberately sign their name. This seemingly simple task proved difficult for everyone. Stockton then related signing you name to making a putt and pointed out that putting should be much like he simple, free flowing signature attendees made without any thought.

His insights into the physical world were outweighed by those of the psychological world but he did say they were important. He noted that successful golfers need to always hold the putter in their left hand prior to making a stroke and that practice putts should rarely, if ever, be made. He elaborated on equipment noting that putters need to have at least 4 degrees of loft, bigger grips are great because they allow more feel, and that grooved faces make a huge difference in getting the ball rolling quickly. Stockton also offered a few stories from his extensive playing career. He noted his first round ever with Arnold Palmer where the two were paired with former PGA Champion Don January. January pulled him aside after they left the first tee and as he sauntered down the fairway, January told Stockton the key to beating Palmer; walk slow and take your time. Stockton beat Palmer that day and would go on to beat Palmer in every round the two were ever paired together in.

Candidates for the Board of Directors The following PGA Professionals are running for the three (3) Board of Director positions who will serve from 2015 to 2018. Below you will find a brief biography of each candidate along with their reasons for running. Voting will take place at the 2015 Spring Membership Meeting, March 23, 2015 at Pinehurst Country Club.

Matt Cohen, PGA Head Professional, Country Club of Colorado

M

att Cohen is the PGA Head Professional at The Country Club of Colorado and is seeking election to his second term as a Colorado PGA Board of Director. Matt has served the membership of The Country Club of Colorado since 2007. Prior to his current position, Matt served as the PGA Head Professional of the Persimmon and Ironwood Golf Course at the Anthem Country Club. He began his career at Ventana Canyon Golf Club in 1996 where we would go on to serve as an Assistant Professional and Tournament Coordinator until 2002. My reasons for running for reelection to the Board of Directors are very simple. I want to continue to help enhance the membership experience for my fellow PGA Members and Apprentices through my passion and energy for our game and our Section. I would love the opportunity to continue the great work being done with the Apprentice Relations Committee; we are making great strides in terms of supporting our Apprentices along the path to membership, and there are some exciting initiatives we are currently working on that will truly enhance that experience if given the opportunity to continue to work together as a committee. Working with the Section Staff and alongside some incredible PGA Professionals, our Officers and fellow Board Members is a wonderful experience as well; learning from and working with some of the best our Section has to offer is both humbling and a great honor. Finally, and most importantly, the ability to be able to give time, energy and passion back to the PGA of America and our Section with the goal of growing the game and continuing to elevate the PGA Professional as the foremost expert in the business of golf means a tremendous amount to me.

Ashley “AC” Cox Manager of Educational Development and Recruiting at GolfTEC

A

C is a 2000 graduate of the PGA Golf Management Program at Mississippi State University. He spent the next 10 years working as an administrator in the PGA Golf Management Programs at Campbell University (Assistant Director) and North Carolina State University (Director of Instruction). During that time AC trained, mentored, and helped place more than 200 students in various positions within the golf industry. Additionally, AC served as an Instructor of Marketing in which he taught both undergraduate and graduate marketing courses. In 2012, AC joined the team at GolfTEC Headquarters where he wears many hats within the organization. He has helped facilitate the training of over 200 new hires at GolfTEC University, as well as managing the content of GolfTEC’s ever growing internal Training Center for its 650+ Certified Personal Coaches. He is TPI Certified and he’s the recruiting liaison for the PGA Golf Management Programs, the Golf Academy of America, and the Professional Golfers Career College. I’m excited about doing my part to help further the goals of the Colorado PGA. I’m specifically interested in helping ensure the growth and success of our apprentices and those members seeking to improve upon their education through the certification program. My focus is to develop additional tools and methods that will allow apprentices to successfully complete all 3 levels of the PGA Golf Management Program on the first attempt. Additionally, I’d like to help create online learning opportunities for members and apprentices to increase their industry knowledge in a time/cost convenient manner.

Director of Golf, Fort Collins Country Club

J

ohn’s passion for golf began in 1976 when he was 10 years-old, serving as a caddie at the Omaha Country Club until 1983. Other positions held at the Omaha Country Club were starter/ranger and Assistant Golf Professional in 1986 until 1989. In 1990, John moved to Waterloo, Iowa where he served as first assistant at the Sunnyside Country Club, working under Andy Devine. While working for Sunnyside, John was able to travel south in the winter and work at the John Jacobs Golf School - an opportunity that began his journey as a teacher. In 1993, John moved to Fort Collins, Colorado and took a position as Assistant Golf Professional at the Fort Collins Country Club. The following year he became Head Golf Professional - only the third head professional in the entire 50-year history of the FCCC. In 2008 the Hanrahan Golf School was created onsite at the Fort Collins Country Club. In 2014 John was ranked in Mizuno’s Top 100 Fitters in the Nation. Twenty three years have been spent in the Colorado Section and I look forward to an opportunity to serve its members. I am running for the Board to add a voice for the Northern part of Colorado. I also think it’s important for members to give back to the section. With my children off to school I have the time now to give back to the Section and to the Board of Directors. There are three Items that I find important for our members. They are the growth of game, Education & employment. It’s not just what we are doing now for our members but what are doing to make it better for the generations to come.

Cathy Matthews-Kane, PGA, MBA Club General Manager, Country Club of Colorado

I

have been fortunate to be a member of the Colorado PGA Board for the past three years. I began my PGA career at The Broadmoor in 1999 where I worked for over 13 years working my way up from a seasonal Assistant Golf Professional to Membership Professional. During my tenure at the resort, I faced financial and operational decisions that affected not only the short-term but the long-term success of the operation. I continued my career at Colorado Springs Country Club where I served as the Director of Membership. I am currently the Club General Manager at The Country Club of Colorado. I believe my experience in all different areas of the game and business acumen uniquely qualifies me to help lead our great section. As a Board Member, I was afforded the opportunity to intimately learn about section operations and issues concerning our members. I looked at every issue presented through the lens of how does this affect our PGA Member. I was a strong advocate of recruiting our first ever independent director which has produced numerous positive results in the development of both our Board of Directors and also our Section staff. I believe that we must continue to develop as a Board so we can make the right decisions and explore every option available to improving the services we provide our membership. We have come a long way over the years and continue to grow and develop and I would be humbled by the opportunity to continue to serve in this capacity. Golf needs to continue to reach out and bring more people to the game, especially women and minorities. I look forward to continuing to work on this issue through our Diversity & Inclusion Pillar under Colorado PGA REACH. I believe my leadership experience is an asset to the Colorado PGA Board. I am honored to be a Member of the Colorado PGA Section and I am so proud of the collective efforts of all the great PGA Professionals in this Section that foster growth of the game. The Section recognition for the Herb Graffis National PGA award in 2011 speaks volumes about the commitment to excellence in our Section with exemplary contributions in player development. I aspire to continue to represent our membership as Board member, seek collective viewpoints, and uphold a commitment to excellence.

Josh Miller, PGA

Associate Director of Operations, GolfTEC - Headquarters

J

osh Miller has been a PGA member for 10 years after graduating from New Mexico State University’s PGM program and has completed the PGA’s Certified Professional Program in Instruction, Operations, Player Development and General Manager. Currently Josh serves as GolfTEC’s Associate Director of Operations at GolfTEC Headquarters and has been with GolfTEC for 5 years which included time at their Golden location as both a Coach and Director of Instruction. Previously he was the Head Professional at Deer Creek Golf as well as an Assistant Professional at The Ranch Country Club and Red Rocks Country Club. The past several years he has volunteered his time to the Apprentice Relations and Awards Committee for the Section. “Throughout my 10 years as a PGA member I have always looked for ways to help the section and association that I have so much pride in. I have had the honor to work with so many great PGA members at clubs here in Colorado and with GolfTEC. Through this time I have been able to see their impact on their peers and their passion for the PGA. I hope to bring that same passion and desire to help other PGA members if elected to the Board of Directors. My experience with private and public clubs, the retail side of golf as well as GolfTEC will allow to me to look at section issues from several angles to help the other Board members find the best possible solutions. I hope you find I would be a worthy addition to the Board and know that it will come with great responsibility. Thank you for your consideration.”

Director of Instruction, Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club at Fort Carson

I

am currently the Director of Instruction at the Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs. We offer instruction to a wide range of clientele. From the Soldiers and their families to the civilian, we have a large jr. program and wounded warrior programs. We were part of the pilot program for the Team Golf and now part of the PGA Jr. golf League. We were also the part of the new PGA H.O.P.E. program put together by the PGA. In my past I have been the Head Golf Professional at the Cherokee Ridge Golf Course and the Gary Player designed Sumo golf course. I was on the national long drive circuit for 7 years and have played on the mini tours and the China tour. I was part of a startup instructional facility in China where we focused on bringing in people from all over the world to play on some of the best golf courses in China. I have worked on everything from start up golf facilities to the resort and military golf courses. I have been involved in acquiring 2 patents for golf products over the course of my life. My reasons for running for the board of directors this year are in many ways related to the help i received as a young pro in the PGA. I had many pros help me through the ins and outs of the game and business. Over the years i have learned many things about this business and if i could help some young pro out while i was on the board i would welcome that opportunity. With my experience in many different areas of the game I believe I can bring something to the table. I am never afraid to try something new and I will offer my thoughts when i think it is helpful. I my life I have had my share of successes and my share of failures and I believe in some cases you can learn more from your failures then you can from your successes. If I can help our membership in any way i would welcome that opportunity. If I can help one individual to not make the mistakes that I’ve made in the past I would also consider that an honor. With this being said I would like to add my name for consideration to join the Board of Directors of the Colorado Section of the PGA.

Phillip Tobias, PGA Director of Golf, Keystone Ranch and the River Course at Keystone

I

fell in love with golf at the age of 12 and obtained my first golf operations job at age 14. I worked in golf each summer until graduating from the University of Northern Michigan in 1998. Upon graduation I moved to our Nation’s capital where I worked for Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions. It was my time spent working in Washington that I discovered my passion for golf. It was the first time since the age of 12 that I was not around the game and I realized how much I missed it. I decided to move West to Colorado in November 1998 where I began my career at Keystone Resort working seasonally as a ski instructor and Bag staff attendant for the Keystone Ranch. In 2001 I was promoted to 1st assistant professional where I was lucky enough to have been mentored by PGA Professionals Tom Anderson, Steve Keiser and other resort directors. In 2007 I obtained year round golf employment and in 2009 I became the Head Golf Professional for both The Keystone Ranch and The River Course at Keystone. As I reflect upon my short career and the difference I have been able to make in the lives of others is most satisfying for me as a person, leader and ambassador to the game of golf. It would be an honor to serve my fellow PGA professionals on the board of directors. I enjoy working as a team to drive forward and complete initiatives. I am not afraid of change and seek opportunities often. I am looking forward to being challenged and learning more about our section and the issues we and our industry face. I am more than happy to serve in whatever capacity best serves our membership and I am looking forward to leading an already great section into the future. Thank you for your consideration and opportunity to serve you as a board member.

In 1999, he was given the opportunity to be the opening Head Professional at the Omni Interlocken Resort. Four years later, Omni transferred Dave to Arizona to take over as the Director of Golf at the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort & Spa. Soon after, Hale Irwin Golf Services recruited him to manage the opening of the Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, MN as the General Manager/Director of Golf. In 2008, the Colorado Golf Association hired Dave as the Director of Golf to oversee the opening of CommonGround Golf Course, where he currently acts as the General Manager. Currently, I am the GM/Director of Golf at CommonGround Golf Course. After 21 years as a golf professional, the time has come for me to serve and give back to the PGA. The PGA has allowed me the opportunity to build a very successful career in the golf business, which has allowed me to support my wife and 5 children, and for that, I am grateful. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to be a part of a number of fine golf operations that have included private courses, resort courses, and daily fee public courses. I have taken part in the opening of three different golf courses and have had the opportunity to work in Colorado, Minnesota, and Arizona. I have run countless tournaments and have even been fortunate enough to be the host PGA Professional for a PGA Tour Event and for the U.S. Amateur Championship. I have truly been blessed, and would love the opportunity to draw from my experience to serve the Colorado PGA Section as a Board Member.

G

olf is a solitary pursuit, right? So why would you be interested in PGA Junior League, a Team-Based junior format? What’s so special about team sports? For one thing, today’s generation of children are fighting the worst obesity epidemic in history. Giving kids an excuse to exercise is reason enough to consider team sports. But calories aside, team sports have other benefits to kids—social, emotional and physical ones. Here are some things that team sports teach that go well beyond the scoreboard Ego Checks Any parent knows that a child can be extremely egocentric. But that “my way or the highway” attitude will have to stay in check on a team sport. Positive Mentors A dedicated, thoughtful and skilled PGA Professional coach can have an amazing impact on children. The Three P's Just as they must practice spelling, math and any other skill, kids need to learn that being part of a sports team requires the three P's … practice, patience and persistence. Another Reason for Family Time Spending time together at the club, walking 9 holes, pitching and putting … these types of outings between parents and kids can mean a great deal in a busy parenting culture. So what does that look like in our world? It looks like PGA Junior League Golf. PGA Junior League Golf (PGA JLG) is designed to bring a “Little League” atmosphere to the game of golf. With teams of boys and girls, age 13 and under, PGA JLG provides a structured league environment for young golfers to compete and have fun!

• 4-6 week regular season, with 2-3 home competitions and 2-3 away competitions against the other PGA JLG teams in your league What are the Benefits to the Club? • Incremental revenue opportunities via increased private lessons and group teaching sessions • Additional incremental revenue opportunities via merchandise and equipment sales, food and beverage sales, spectator cart rentals, etc. •

• Supports and enhances all existing junior programs and will help seed a future generation of club members What am I Responsible for and What’s the Timeline? October-February • New Captains simply need to register their teams at http://www.pgajrleaguegolf.com • Receive recruitment materials from PGA Junior League Golf Headquarters • Display these materials throughout the club and reach out to membership via email to recruit players •

What’s the Structure? • Local leagues consist of 4-7 teams in a reasonable geographic proximity

• Team vs. Team competitions consist of four 9-hole matches (only four tee times)

• The format is 2 person teams, Match Play scramble. Matches are broken into 3-hole segments called “Flags”. This allows for substitution between the 3-hole segments (“Flags”), giving every participant a chance to play

PGA of America Purchases PGA Junior League Golf

O

n Monday, February 24th President Derek Sprague announced the purchase of PGA Junior League from League Golf by the PGA of America. This transaction marks the full acquisition of the fastest growing youth golf initiative in the industry. One need not look further than the Colorado Section for proof of this program’s growing popularity. In 2014, 8 golf facilities within the Colorado PGA borders participated in PGA Junior League. Already in 2015, more than 30 facilities have signed up to participate in this fun, team-based format. Keith Soriano, Colorado PGA Player Development Director noted “that the popularity and practicality of the program is evidenced in the Colorado Section by the growth from 8 participating facilities in 2014 to 30 participating facilities and counting in 2015.” “The acquisition of the PGA Junior League brand and operating model puts control of the most exciting, innovative junior golf growth engine fully in the hands of PGA Professionals,” Soriano said after the announcement. “In terms of Player Development in the Colorado Section, it reinforces the belief that programs that stress the fun and social elements of the game of golf have the potential to drive more and more kids to the game and have a real impact on rounds and revenue at the facility level.” “I couldn’t be more excited for the future of youth golf in Colorado when it comes to our Member’s engagement in PGA Junior League Golf.”

PGA Junior League is continuing to accept new facilities and teams, and the process for signing up is simple. To become a PGA Junior League facility, simply visit www.PGAJrLeagueGolf. com and click on the “Host a Team” link under the PGA Pro menu. A league consists of at least 4 facilities, so PGA Junior League presents a great opportunity to create a community of junior golfers within your geographical area. The Colorado PGA is proud to be a supporter of PGA Junior League Golf and our Player Development team stands ready to assist you in creating your league, recruiting your team, and growing your junior business. To learn more about PGA Junior League Golf, visit www.PGAJRLeagueGolf.com or contact Director of Player Development, Keith Soriano, PGA at ksoriano@ pgahq.com or 720.841.1006.

Celebration, Validation, Negotiation, and Identification

W

hat if there was a way to tell a story that Celebrated your work as a PGA Professional, Validated your contribution to the facility, provided you with a tool in the Negotiation of your position, and allowed for the Identification of areas of excellence and opportunities for improvement? Would that interest you? I am certain you have a good sense for what you generate in instruction revenue from either individual lessons or through player development programming. But, do you truly know what impact your instructional programs have to the bottom line of your facility? If you could validate that you have truly created an ROI (return on investment) for your employer, wouldn’t you like to be armed with that information? Wouldn’t it be beneficial to show that not only have you covered your salary, but three, four or five times over? The PGA of America has created a tool to help you showcase your value…..The Revenue Scorecard. The Revenue Scorecard is a business tool designed to systematically quantify the total incremental revenue driven to your facility through player development programming. The total yearly incremental revenue reported in the Revenue Scorecard is a key business measure that can be shared with your facility ownership or with your supervisor to demonstrate the value and revenue that you’ve driven to the facility through your instructional programming.

You can view completed Revenue Scorecard success stories from facilities in the Colorado Section, as well as across the country on PGA Links. Click here for success stories. If you are interested in completing this exercise, now is the time as we can delve into your 2014 numbers and coordinate your 2015 offerings. Click here for the Revenue Scorecard found on PGA Links. I would be happy to assist you in the process. Keith Soriano, PGA Director of Player Development & Operations Manager Colorado PGA ksoriano@pgahq.com 720.841.1006

A Simple Request I realize asking for time is a tough ask but I am doing it! Why? It really is quite simple. For those of you who have completed the PGA Compensation Survey-THANK YOU! You can stop reading. For those of you have not- read on! PLEASE go to pgalinks.com (or pga.org), log in using your username and password and fill out the PGA Compensation Survey. Over the last couple of months, I have assisted many members and employers requesting compensation figures. I utilize this survey on many, many occasions when working with an employer. It provides me with data which in many instances can potentially enhance a job financially. Does it always work? No. But the more PGA Members/Apprentices I get to participate, the more valid the information becomes. Perhaps you have no plans to leave your position and are not looking to move to a new job. Nonetheless, by participating in filling out this survey you receive up to 2 MSR credits; you are helping your fellow PGA Professional by adding your data to the pool of people who fill this Compensation Survey out and you are assisting me when working with an employer. You also can assist yourself when negotiating your own raise by using this tool. You have the ability to print out a document in PDF to show your employer and this is a very professional looking document. Spend some time looking at it and as always, feel free to give me a call to discuss.

Another valuable component of the Compensation Survey is the Benefits part of the Survey. Everyone knows that the economic times we live in are making it difficult to receive pay raises. It is also difficult to keep a benefit package at a level it once was at in many instances. However, the more data I can get to prove to facilities that health insurance (perhaps even if a stipend is provided), PGA dues, education allowance, meals, cell phone expense, retirement contribution, etc. are being provided, I can potentially make a difference in your overall package. Your deadline is March 23, 2015! I hope I can count on you! Bruce Lubach, PGA, is the PGA of America Employment Consultant for the Colorado, Iowa, Midwest, Minnesota and Nebraska Sections. He can be reached at: blubach@pgahq.com or (402) 261-3604.

Complete the 2015 Compensation Survey Today! PGA Professionals are able to go to PGA.org and take the 2015 PGA Golf Professional Compensation Survey, which seeks data from 2014. The survey will be live through March 23, 2015 to earn MSR credit, provided the maximum MSR requirement has not been met. All active PGA Professionals (except A-3s) are asked to participate in this confidential survey. The annual PGA Compensation Survey is the industry standard for providing invaluable data on golf professional compensation levels. Why complete it? The Survey provides key information to assist with: • Meaningful comparisons to improve one’s Compensation and Benefits when working with the employer •

Performance Evaluations

Contract Renewals

Staff Budgeting

Employment Corner

How to complete the Compensation Survey: Log into PGA.org and type in 2015 Compensation Survey in the search area. The Survey will come up for you to complete.

and the remaining players would receive $210 each.)

his year the Colorado PGA Match Play Championship will take on a new look, very similar to the format now being utilized by the World Golf Championships – Cadillac Match Play. The Colorado PGA will move to round-robin play for the first three matches being played amongst Professionals in general proximity of one another. We feel this will increase participation and grow camaraderie amongst Colorado PGA Professionals.

in this 3-month time frame between each player in the pod. One point will be awarded for each match won. If a match is not completed by the end of July, the player will not earn any points towards round-robin play for that match. The winners from each group will fill out the Round of 16, which is to be played during August. Once the Round of 16 is complete, a facility that has yet to be announced will host the Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Final Matches in the month of September.

Just like the WGC, with a 64 player field, the Colorado PGA will divide the field into 16 four-player pods. Professionals will be placed into a group either by their home or facility address. Pods will be seeded according to the previous year’s Player of the Year Points and are subject to approval of a three person sub-committee consisting of Don Graham, Barry Milstead and Justin Limon. Each pod will play round-robin matches within their group from May-July 31st. Each player will be responsible for scheduling each individual match

Tune into the WGC-Cadillac Match Play coming up April 27-May 3 at TPC Harding Park and see how the new format plays out. Also, don’t forget to register for the Colorado PGA Match Play Championship; deadline is Friday, May 1st, 2015 and groups will be released the following Wednesday, May 6th, 2015. Visit the Tournament Information Page for more information regarding the Colorado PGA Match Play Championship.
