A Ripple Effect
W
e’ve all likely heard of the example of throwing a pebble into a calm pool of water and seeing the ripples spread out from where the pebble entered the water. The takeaway is that no matter the size of the pebble, there is always a residual effect of its entrance into the water. The same can be said for the effect of each individual PGA Professional on their club and their community. As we talked about in the Spring Meeting, YOU matter. What YOU do matters to those around you. You may never see the residual effect of you your entrance into a community, but rest assured, there is one. Our Section has a saying, a mantra of sorts; “Making a positive difference in the lives of others through the game of golf.” I can’t think of a better description of the ripple effect that we can have as PGA Professionals. Having spent the first twenty years of my career as a golf course operator, I know well the demands placed on your time. That’s why your Officers and Board of Directors have worked hard to provide you with opportunities to engage in your community through participation in Section events. Coming up in May, we have two great events that speak to our commitment to making a difference in the lives of those who have dedicated their lives to the safeguarding of our freedoms. On May 7th, we will be hosting the PGA of America Foundation’s PGA H.O.P.E. (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) program training at the Golf Club at Bear Dance. This training, provided by the PGA Foundation, will include both a classroom and hands-on workshop that will better prepare our professionals to work with Wounded Warriors. A special addition to this training will be a discussion and training on working with those who are battling Autism. We all understand the health benefits, both physical and mental, that come with the game of golf. This is a great opportunity to expand our members’ knowledge base and to give back to the community. Click here to sign up! On May 21st, we will host the annual “Ivy” Pro-Am at Cheyenne Shadows Golf Course at Fort Carson. We are seeking 30 PGA Professionals to take part in this event to be paired with a group of Active Duty Soldiers or Veterans in a fun and emotionally fulfilling event. In addition, several of your Officers and Board Members, along with our Military Affairs Committee will be spending the morning of the 21st visiting with the members of the Warrior Transition Battalion at Ft. Carson. This special unit of heroes is made up of soldiers who are learning to readjust to life after combat, most learning to cope with new challenges as a result of their service. As a function of our Section’s community involvement, we will be exploring options to partner with the WTB to provide support and positive “ripples” in their lives. Click here to sign up! Our support of the Military is a natural progression of our charitable efforts; however we understand that many of you may live and work in communities that may not be as directly affected by soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen. I would implore you to you find a way to be a pebble in your community; to actively seek out a way to create a positive “ripple” in the lives of others through the game of golf. Recently, PGA Professional Joe Carlton from Legacy Ridge Golf Course conducted a Golf in Schools Program with the kids from the Rocky Mountain Deaf School. Joe’s story is a perfect example of how one person can make a difference. I encourage you to read about it in this issue of Pro Peaks. Surely, there are community organizations, schools, neighborhoods, children, and families that can benefit from the philanthropic spirit that is at the core of our Association and is so close to many of our hearts. If your Section Staff can be of any assistance in helping you identify opportunities to give back in your community, or in helping you develop products that meet that need, please do not hesitate to call on us. Respectfully, Eddie

Tournament Corner
Justin Limon, PGA | Tournament Manager Hanson Steady in Winning Murphy Creek Stroke Play Event This time of year residents of Colorado’s high country are usually trying to get in a couple more runs on the slopes before the ski season ends. Jeff Hanson, the PGA Director of Golf at Red Sky Ranch Golf Club in the Vail Valley, isn’t one of those people. Hanson seemed to be in full golf mode as he was able to post a five-under-par 67 to win the Murphy Creek Stroke Play event on Monday, April 21st. Hanson put together a strong round as he was able to make five birdies and no bogies on the day. Hanson wasn’t the only player to make his fair share of birdies though. Barry Milstead, PGA Head Professional at Valley Country Club posted an impressive eight birdies on the day but made five bogies to post a three-under-par 69. Caine Fitzgerald, PGA Assistant Professional at Murphy Creek Golf Course posted five birdies of his own but countered them with two bogies in also shooting a three-underpar 69 to finish in second place with Milstead. The 50 for 50 division debuted at the event. This series, which is an opt in for participants over 50 years of age, ended with three players tying for first past. Ron Vlosich, PGA Life Member, Rick Cole, PGA Head Professional at Eaton Country Club, and Bill Loeffler, PGA General Manager at The Links Golf Course all shot a five-over-par 77 on the day.

Hunt Bests Mother Nature and Field to Take National Car Rental Pro Am Series at Columbine Country Club Weather along the Front Range this time of year can consist of bluebird days with highs reaching into the low 80’s. It can also consist of cool blustery days that remind everyone of the winter just past. April 28th certainly was one of the later. Highs for the National Car Rental Pro Am Series at Columbine Country Club reached only the low 50’s with gusts pushing into the 40 mph range. Rob Hunt, PGA Head Professional at The Links Golf Course in Highlands Ranch was able to overcome mother nature and the rest of the field to win the first of two National Car Rental Pro Am events of the year. Hunt, who competed in the afternoon start in what many thought were the poorest conditions of the day, managed to fire an even-par 72 on the day to post a two-stroke victory. Hunt dominated the par-5’s on the day playing then in an impressive four-under-par. What may have been more impressive though was that he finished his round with a double-bogey on the par-4 15th to still post that two-stroke victory. Caine Fitzgerald, PGA Assistant Professional at Murphy Creek posted a two-over par 74 to finish tied for second for consecutive weeks. Kyle Voska, PGA Assistant Professional at The Links Golf Course was able to match Fitzgerald in posting a 74. In the team contest, Barry Milstead, PGA Head Professional at Valley Country Club and Geoff Keffer, PGA Assistant Professional at Murphy Creek Golf Course led their teams to a tie for first place at nine-under-par 135. Milstead teamed with Richard Graham, Ralph Shaw, and Bob Schenkenberger, while Keffer partnered with Jeff Cooley, Lonnie Barnhouse, and Frank Grabowski. The National Car Rental Pro Am Series Mobile Experience was on-site and provided activities for golf all of the competitors. The traveling tour bus featured state-of-theart Trackman swing analysis, allowing participants the opportunity to see how their swing compares with Keegan Bradley’s, some of the golf industry’s newest demo clubs, a club re-regripping service, and a Keegan Bradley replica golf bag. The Colorado PGA would like to thank PGA Head Professional Brian Heim, the rest of the professional staff and the membership of Columbine Country Club for hosting the event.

Junior Golf
Erin Diegel, PGA | Junior Golf Director “The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.” ~ Phil Jackson Enter the concept of Team in the world of Junior golf. On Saturday, May 17th the Colorado PGA will host its inaugural Team Golf event at Hyland Hills Golf Course in Westminster. Team Golf is designed for Colorado PGA Junior Members ages 7-14 with beginning level golf experience and offers an introduction to tournament play through 9-hole, team scramble competition. Team Golf serves as a fun, social, low stress approach to tournament golf, and provides junior golfers with knowledge and skills that set the stage for a lifetime of golf enjoyment. A Team is comprised of six players that form three 2-person Teams. These 2-person Teams compete in their respective coed age divisions (7-10, 11-12, 13-14) in a 2-person Scramble format. Each 2- person Team will be awarded points based on how they finish in their respective division. Points earned in each division are then added together to create the Team’s overall point total. Awards are distributed based on overall Team point totals. Each individual on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Teams are awarded medals. It is not too late to participate on a team or host a team. For more information on Team Golf, please go to www.coloradopgajuniorgolf.com. Roster submission for Hyland hills is now open and the form can be accessed at www.coloradopga.com or by clicking here.

Joe Carlton, PGA Assistant Professional Legacy Ridge Golf Course During the months of March and April, our PGA golf professionals have reached over 3,000 kids in the Colorado PGA Golf in Schools Program. The program reaches kids of all ages, race, socioeconomic backgrounds and disabilities. This couldn’t be more true of the Golf in Schools program that Joe Carlton ran. When Cartlon, a PGA Assistant Professional at Legacy Ridge Golf Course met his fiancé, his life changed in more ways than one. Not only was he busy performing the duties of an assistant golf professional, he was also learning sign language as his then girlfriend was deaf. After helping out with a few Golf in Schools Field Trips, Joe felt a tug at his heart and a call to do something more. Last week, Joe completed the first Golf in schools program for deaf children at the Rocky Mountain Deaf School working with a select 15 children ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade creating a golf experience they will never forget. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about the Colorado PGAGolf in Schools Program, please contact Erin Diegel at ediegel@pgahq.com.

Access, Access, Access! The Colorado PGA is proud to present an opportunity for all Junior Members to participate in a Kids Play Free Campaign. Much like the Colorado Ski Country offers 5th graders an opportunity to learn the sport of skiing or snowboarding for free, we will offer juniors the ability to utilize 3 “free opportunities at participating facilities. This presents a great benefit to junior members but also allows the facility to track particular demographics of those golfers. Through a customer management application or via web browser, a facility can identify the who, what, when, where, why of their junior customers. A facility who is interested in participating in this campaign will need to be a Certified Junior Facility and will gain additional exposure on the Kids Play Free opportunities listed on www.coloradopgajuniorgolf.com.

Player Development
Keith Soriano, PGA | Player Develeopment Director
Healthcare. Just the mention of the word elicits strong opinions; but what if we remove emotion and take a look at what the word really means; defined by Webster as “The maintenance and improvement of physical and mental health”. Certainly more palatable. But why talk about healthcare in a golf newsletter? Because all of you participate in an industry that features outdoor, green grass, health and wellness centers! We just usually refer to them as golf courses. As consumers scramble to put together the puzzle of work, family, friends, recreation, and physical health into an increasingly condensed amount of time, you are uniquely positioned to be their problem solver. A time crunched society is the ideal setting to combine multiple goals into one activity. We are all well aware of the business networking and relationship building that can take place on the golf course, and I can think few better places to combine time with friends and family with recreation. Now is the time to position golf as the new “Healthcare Option”. According to a study conducted in Denver by Dr. Neil Wolkodoff at the Rose Center for Health and Sports Sciences, concluded that those who walk an 18 hole course can average almost 5 miles of walking and 2,500 calories burned. Studies show that burning 2,500 calories a week improves your overall health by lowering your risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. I believe we can all attest to the mental health benefits of spending time with family and friends in some of the most beautiful settings on Earth. Be an advocate for your club, and more importantly for your members and guests. Position your product as a work, family, friend, and health-friendly option in today’s busy times. To learn more about including health and wellness in your player development programs, contact Keith Soriano, PGA at the Colorado Section office. Keith Soriano, PGA ksoriano@pgahq.com 720.841.1006

Colorado PGA Launches Employee Talent Development Programs Connecting Corporate America with PGA Professionals On April 18th, the Colorado PGA partnered with Level 3 Communications and the Omni Interlocken Golf Club to introduce Level 3 employees to the health and wellness benefits of the game of golf. The Level 3 Campus sits in the middle of the 27 hole layout, and the company hosts an annual employee golf event at the club. Working through the company’s fitness contractor, Elevation Corporate Health, two teaching stations and several fitness stations were set up in the courtyard of the Level 3 Campus. More than 70 employees went through a swing evaluation provided by the Omni’s Director of Instruction, PGA Professional Dan Sniffin and his Apprentice instructor, Brooke Collins. In addition, the fitness instructors from Level 3 Communications provided demonstration and instruction on proper warm-up, stretching, and strengthening exercises that can increase efficiency and reduce injury. As a result of the exposure event, the team from Elevation Corporate Health, Omni Interlocken Golf Club and the Colorado PGA are working together to deliver Get Golf Ready programs designed for Level 3 employees only at Omni Interlocken GC. One of the goals of the exposure event was to communicate the health, wellness, and business team building aspects of the game of golf. The fitness instructors were provided statistics such as the 2,000 calorie burn that takes place during a walked 18-hole round of golf, as well as the core stability benefits of an active lifestyle that includes golf. From a business standpoint, the “Team Workgroup” organization of Level 3 Communications lends itself perfectly to using Get Golf Ready classes as teambuilding opportunities, not to mention the networking opportunities that can occur once the GGR graduates begin to utilize golf as a vehicle for relationship building and sales. To see how the Colorado Section can help you connect with businesses in your area, or to connect your business with a PGA Professional to leverage the benefits of the game of golf for your team, contact Keith Soriano, PGA at the Colorado Section Office.

Drive, Chip & Putt
Grow Your Junior Programs with Drive Chip and Putt 88 Junior Golfers just took to the hallowed grounds of Augusta National Golf Club to compete for the title of Drive Chip and Putt Champion in their age division. The chance to be there in 2015 begins here! The Colorado PGA is hosting 5 Local Qualifiers and one Sub-Regional Qualifier in 2014. Your Junior Golfer’s chance to get ready for the qualifier begins right here at your local golf course. PGA Professionals across the Section will be offering a Drive Chip & Putt Prep Series that will prepare your Junior for your local and sub-regional qualifier! This will be the perfect opportunity for your Junior Golfers to practice the skills they need on the same competitive set up as they will see at your qualifier. We are looking for positions in each area of the Championship. If you are interested in volunteering, whether you are a Colorado PGA Professional, an Amateur, or simply someone looking to get involved, please reach out to Erin Diegel, PGA Junior Golf Director at ediegel@pgahq.com.

Employment Update When working with an employer on posting a Head Professional, Director of Golf or General Manager position, the employer has lamented to me on numerous occasions their previous employee was lacking in the visibility area of their job. When I press the employer to explain, they simply say, he or she (the employee) was just not VISIBLE! I realize expectations are sometimes unrealistic when it comes to being visible. This begs the question to the employer, “When do I need to be at the club or what are your expectations for me”? Start the dialogue today before it becomes a problem. If the employer isn’t going to give you direction, here are some ideas to potentially think about. 1. Do you make a “bank run” daily? When are you doing it? Is it possible to have someone else do it for you? Are the errands you run necessary? 2. Are you “above” answering the phone or checking people in or being at the counter from time to time? 3. Do you ever meet/greet people in the parking lot when they arrive? There is no better time to make a positive impression than when a member arrives at the club. 4. What are you doing for Ladies Day? “Delegating”? Make sure you are available and treat this day as an opportunity to be seen. 5. Are you there only to “hand out the awards”? Make sure this doesn’t become a habit! Members do notice this phenomenon! 6. Do you ever start groups on the first tee? The banter and pleasantries exchanged can be fun and show you care. 7. Do you make runs around the course? Make the run not necessarily just for pace of play reasons. Maybe have your clubs with you and play a few holes with a group. 8. Do make an effort to “work the range” from time to time. Offering swing tips and timely advice can go a long way in improving your stock at the club. I know there are many more ideas that some of you are doing to be visible. Make a concerted effort this year to increase your visibility at your club- it could make a difference! Bruce Lubach, PGA, is the PGA of America Employment Consultant for the Colorado, Iowa, Midwest, Minnesota and Nebraska Sections. He can be reached at: blubach@pgahq.com or (402) 261-3604.
