Our Annual Event Guide is Here!
Two months have passed by since the New Year. Have you been sticking to your resolutions or have you already forgotten them? Goals are important for runners. They help us stay motivated and stay on target with our workouts. If running a race will help you stay on track, Colorado Runner Magazine has you covered! This issue is packed with an event guide to carry you through to the end of the year. There are nearly 700 events listed. You can also go online at www. coloradorunnermag.com to access all of the event listings and to find out more information about each race. We have traditional running and walking events, as well as trail races and multisport races, such as triathlons. We’ve also included adventure races and mud run events. And if it seems like there are more events than ever in Colorado, you’re right. A few years ago, our event guide would consistently publish around 500 events in a year. This year we almost topped 700! Running a race is a great way to track your fitness. I like to not just run one or two big goal races a year, but participate in races regularly to see how my daily workouts are going. You typically push harder in a race than you would by yourself. It also helps tune up your race day routine. You can run a race at the beginning of your running cycle to gauge your fitness, and then race again every month to track your progress. Plus, a fall marathon or half marathon may be a long way off. Racing now will help you stay on target. If you’re having trouble just getting out the door each day, try to focus on one workout at a time. Maybe it will help you follow through to pack your bag for the gym and put it in your car the night before. Or if you’re going to run first thing in the morning, lay out your shoes and workout gear by the bed so you put it on as soon as you get up. If you feel tired or too busy, just commit to a few minutes. I usually find that once I get going, I’m grateful that I made the effort and finished my entire workout. If you’re starting to feel bored or burned out, make a change. Try something different. Try a track workout. Run hills. Stay indoors and test the treadmill. Join a group or a weekly fun run from a local running store. And remember to reward your success. Buy a new pair of running shoes or a new pair of gloves if you’re sticking to your resolutions. It will help you feel confident while running. Small rewards can boost your motivation. I hope you enjoy our event guide! And have a great Spring, getting out the door each day for your run!

R U N N I N G S H O RTS Championships when I heard about the age grade thing and I found out this was a big deal. But before it hadn’t really registered.” James involvement as a masters distance athlete has been a continuous learning process. She didn’t start running until after the age of 40 and didn’t discover using racing flats for competition until 2009. While others her age are slowing down, James’ involvement with running is increasing. “When I turned 70 I thought I would quit, but I was having so much fun,” she said. “I guess I have the right physical makeup.”
Canaday and Yates Race to 100K Trail Titles Boulder’s Sage Canaday and Michele Yates of Estes Park demonstrated the versatility of their running talent with wins at the USA 100K Trail National Championships, held in conjunction with the Bandera Trail Races 100K near Bandera, Texas on Sunday, January 13. Canaday, 27, won his first ultra trail championship, following up on his 2012 national title at the USA Mountain Running Championships. The 100K course in the rugged Hill Country State Natural Area suited his mountain running expertise well. From the start, Canaday took the lead and widened it as the day wore on. While most of the field was hampered by the damp day, with mud-slick trails, Canaday raced to a new course record, breaking the previous best of 8 hours, 16 minutes, 48 seconds set by Dave Mackey in 2011. Canaday’s 8:13:49 put him nearly 40 minutes ahead of the field. In the women’s race, Personal trainer Yates (formerly Suszek), 30, took the lead and widened it to win in 10:08:48. Yates won her first national title at last year’s 50-mile trail championships at the Nueces Trail Run, also in Texas, and plans to defend that crown this March. Masters runner Shannon Meridith of Colorado Springs finished eighth.
Pikes Peak Marathon a Championship Event
Libby James Breaks World Record at Disney
The Pikes Peak Marathon has been selected to host the 2013 USA Trail Marathon Championships. The announcement was made at USATF’s annual meeting in Daytona Beach, Fla., where the national championship events in several distances were determined. Howard Nippert, vice chairperson of the USATF Mountain Ultra Trail Running Council, said the decision to add the Pikes Peak Marathon was unanimous. “It’s a different style of course for us with unique challenges,” he said. “It combines elevation and altitude with terrain variations from the fast start on the pavement to single-track terrain with rocks, scree, and dirt trails. Add to the mix the world-class field and you have the perfect event to host our 2013 USA Marathon Trail Championships. We’re excited to see Pikes Peak join our lineup of events.”
Libby James, 76, of Fort Collins, ran to a new age-group world record at the Walt Disney World Half Marathon on Saturday, January 13. James finished the 13.1 mile distance in 1:45:56, breaking the previous age group world record for women between the ages of 75-79. The mother of four and grandmother of 12 blew away the previous record of 1:55:19 set in 2009 by Ginette Benard. “It makes me feel so very fortunate that I can still run and I am still having fun with it,” James said. “I have always been persistent about my running. Part of it is luck and part of it is being able to keep at it.” On an age-graded scale, James posted a 103.75. USA Track & Field Masters Long Distance Running Chair Don Lein said the accomplishment was “a once in a blue moon kind of phenomenon.” Lein said of the near 14 million age-grade performances from 2012, just eight of those performances were over 100 percent and none were as high as James’ 103.75. The top age-grade performance from 2012 was 103.12 percent, which was also held by James. Of the eight performances over 100 percent in 2012, four of them belonged to her, but none quite to the level of the time she ran at the Disney Half Marathon. “In short, she is a phenomenal athlete, almost in a league of her own,” Lein said. “I hadn’t really experienced it (age grading) until December of 2011,” James said. “We went to Seattle for the USATF Cross Country
Shalane Flanagan used her superior strength to pull away from the rest of the women’s open field while Chris Derrick bested a loaded men’s open race as each claimed USA Cross Country titles on February 2 in St. Louis, Missouri. In addition to awarding national championships for competitors in men’s and women’s junior, open and masters competition, spots on Team USA for the World Cross Country Championships, scheduled for March 24 in Bydgoszcz, Poland, were also on the line for the top six finishers in the junior and senior races. In the women’s open 8K, Flanagan set the tone early and easily won her sixth USA Cross Country title in a time of 25:49. 2012 Olympian Kim Conley ran with Flanagan through the first six kilometers and eventually finished runner-up in a time of 26:06. Competing less than two weeks before her 40th birthday and in her first cross country race since 2007, Deena Kastor placed third overall in a time of 26:41. A veteran to the sport, Kastor has won a total of seven USA Cross Country titles in her career with her first coming in 1997. In the men’s open 12K, Derrick pulled away from one of the deeper fields in the event’s history. Emerging to place second and third, respectively, were 2012 Olympians Dathan Ritzenhein and Matt Tegenkamp. Derrick’s winning time was 35:36, which was ahead of Ritzenhein (35:44) and Tegenkamp (35:55).

In the team race, Boulder Running Company/Adidas finished second. In the women’s junior 6K, Emily Stites and Erin Finn broke away from the rest of the pack early before Stites then made it a solo race in cruising to the victory in a time of 20:27. Finn finished second in a time of 20:48. Following Stites and Finn, the quartet of Colorado’s Carrie Verdon, Kathryn Knight, Samantha Nadel and Sydney Scott all finished in a bunch to all secure their spots on Team USA for the World Junior Cross Country Championships.
USA Triathlon Names Athletes of the Year With U.S. Olympian Sarah Groff and elite national champion Jarrod Shoemaker headlining the honorees, USA Triathlon announced its 2012 Elite Athletes of the Year. Groff, of Hanover, NH, is a repeat winner after posting a fourth-place showing at the 2012 Olympic Games. Shoemaker, of Clermont, FL, was the top-ranked U.S. male in the 2012 ITU World Triathlon Series rankings. Ultra-distance standout Mary Beth Ellis of Boulder and non-drafting, Olympic-distance specialist Cameron Dye of Boulder claimed the Non-Olympic/ITU Athletes of the Year honors. Ellis is a repeat winner after finishing fifth overall to rank as the top American at the 2012 Ironman World Championship and earning victories at Ironman New York and Ironman Cozumel. Dye’s remarkable 2012 season included six race victories, as well as the men’s overall series title for the Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series Race to the Toyota Cup. Rookie of the Year honors went to rising stars Anna Battiata of Mechanicsville, VA and Lukas Verzbicas of Colorado Springs. Battiata placed third at USA Triathlon Elite Nationals. At 19 years old, Verzbicas became the youngest U.S. athlete to record an ITU World Cup victory with his win in Banyoles, Spain, on June 17 in his World Cup debut. In the Under-23 Athlete of the Year category, Kaitlin (Shiver) Donner of Gainesville, FL and Greg Billington of Colorado Springs were repeat winners. Donner won her second straight U.S. under-23 title
at Elite Nationals. Billington finished second overall at Elite Nationals to claim his second straight under-23 national title before placing eighth at the ITU Under-23 World Championships.
Macias Wins Carlsbad Marathon What began as a potentially-dreary morning quickly transformed into a day of new beginnings and celebrations for race champions, and over 8,400 finishers of the 22nd Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon & Half Marathon held January 27 in Carlsbad, CA. Pesky light drizzle which cleared to mostly cloudy skies with temperatures in the mid-50s were anything but dreary conditions for defending champion Mario Macias of Manitou Springs and Lauren Kleppin, of Big Bear Lake, CA, who claimed decisive victories in the men’s and women’s divisions of the marathon. Macias, a Mexican citizen, claimed his second wire-to-wire win in as many years, finishing in 2 hours, 19 minutes, 43 seconds. “The weather was perfect,” said Macias. “There was a strong head wind coming off the ocean but the tail wind helped heading back.” Macias finished more than two minutes ahead of second place finisher Chris Siemers, 32, of Arvada (2:23:51). In the women’s marathon division, Kleppin, 24, took an early lead in her first-ever marathon and never looked back, finishing in 2:42:17. “I always wanted to run a marathon,” said Kleppin, a multiple time All-American while at Western State Colorado University. Over 8,400 runners and walkers from 47 states and 30 foreign countries participated in the 2013 Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon & Half Marathon. The scenic 26.2 and 13.1-mile races started and finished at the Westfield Plaza Camino Real in Carlsbad and treated runners and walkers to tours of the Buena Vista Lagoon, the Village of Carlsbad and the Pacific coastline before returning home to the finish line.

T RUNNING Tips from Boulder Coach Darren De Reuck One of the easiest activities to partake in is running. Why, you ask? Other than some comfortable fitting clothes, all you need is a pair of decent running shoes and off you go – no fancy bells or whistles. ALTHOUGH RUNNING may not be for everyone, it’s one of the best forms of exercise you can do and is great for the heart, your body and burning those extra calories. I did not say it would be easy though… it will take dedication, sacrifice and a strong will to get you through the initial phase. It will take time to build your endurance and strength to run for even a short period of time. Even if you have been cross training with biking, swimming or some other form of activity, running is a weight bearing activity and will be more taxing on the body. Don’t be disillusioned… there’s always a way to become a runner without injuring yourself if you’re patient and persevere. If you have not had a physical in sometime, I’d recommend visiting your doctor and getting the medical clearance before starting out.
1
The most important piece of equipment you’ll need is a good pair of running shoes. Visit your local specialty running store and get a gait analysis. Take in your old pair of shoes so the shoe salesman can look at your wear pattern and get you in the right shoe. There are three types of runners: over-pronators, supinators, and neutral foot strikers. Whichever one you are will be determined by doing the gait analysis. Trust me when I say your feet and body will thank you daily for taking good care of them.
2
While at the specialty running store get yourself some comfortable running clothes and socks. Tech shirts, jog bras, tights and shorts, as well as synthetic socks are the way to go. As comfort is imperative whilst working up a sweat and having that sweat wick away from the body and feet, this will prevent chaffing in spots where it could be very unpleasant and avoid the feet from blistering.
3
If you are starting up while it’s still cold outside, I’d suggest hitting the heath club treadmill to get your feet wet. Going outdoors in frigid temperatures or snow could quite easily steer you back to the couch. When the weather is conducive to being outdoors, try finding trails or roads that are smooth and even, avoiding the concrete, which is hard on the body. If you are starting up from
scratch, I would highly recommend a walk/run schedule for the first two months. 1ST TWO WEEKS Walk/run three times in the week: Tue/Thu/Sat Start with five minutes of easy walking as a warm up, then do 4x4 minutes of power walking followed by 60 seconds of easy running. The total time will be 20 minutes (excluding the warm up and cool down). End with five minutes of easy walking as a cool down. 2ND TWO WEEKS Walk/run three times in the week: Tue/Thu/Sat Start with five minutes of easy walking as a warm up, then do 5x3 minutes of power walking followed by two minutes of easy running. The total time will be 25 minutes (excluding the warm up and cool down). End with five minutes of easy walking as a cool down. 3RD TWO WEEKS Walk/run four times in the week: Tue/Thu/Sat/Sun Start with five minutes of easy walking as a warm up, then do 6x2 minutes of power walking followed by three minutes of easy running. The total time will be 30 minutes (excluding the warm up and cool down). End with five minutes of easy walking as a cool down. 4TH TWO WEEKS Walk/run four times in the week: Tue/Thu/Sat/Sun Start with five minutes of easy walking as a warm up, then do 7x1 minutes of power walking followed by four minutes of easy running. The total time will be 35 minutes (excluding the warm up and cool down). End with five minutes of easy walking as a cool down. The power walk should be done at a nice brisk pace using the arms to power you forward and walking from the heel through the ball of the foot onto the toes, mimicking a race walker almost. The run portion should be done at a comfortable
conversational pace. As you get stronger, this pace will feel easier. You’ll notice that you are going somewhat faster, but still managing to stay controlled and comfortable.
4
As a novice or “newbie” to running, there are so many things that you have to remember… whether it be about nutrition, not getting over zealous and ending up hurt, or how much crosstraining to add to your weekly schedule. All of these questions can be answered by joining a club or looking for a coach to write your weekly schedule and monitor your training. Side stitches are fairly common when you start running and we are not sure why they occur, but there some things you can do to prevent them. One cause is running too close after eating a meal and that meal has not had time to digest into your system resulting in stomach cramps. You should wait anywhere from two to four hours after a large meal before heading out the door. Another reason for side stitches is weak stomach muscles. Your abs do a lot of work to keep your body in position while running. Doing consistent core strength work will help strengthen your torso and reduce those side stitches. Running injuries are not pleasant, however, they can be prevented by following the simple rules of running: stick to your schedule, don’t increase your mileage in huge chunks, make sure you keep the intensity under raps, start your training regime with “new” shoes, and keep it FUN. Running is an easy way to get in shape, burn calories, make your heart healthy and increase bone density. It takes consistency though. Do that and you’ll be itching to run your first race. Darren De Reuck has been coaching runners for almost 20 years. Beginning in 1988, he coached club level as well as elite runners in his native South Africa. In 1993, he began serving as a training partner to his wife, Colleen De Reuck. He later headed up the official training club for The Bolder Boulder 10K, as well as The Boulder Striders, and The Running Republic of Boulder. Copyright The Running Network LLC. N UTR ITI O N ADVANTAG E
Times have changed from when we used to joke about runners who ate “nuts and berries.” Today’s runners routinely enjoy nuts and berries and are now looking for ways to notch up their diets with more seeds (such as flax and chia) and whole grains (such as quinoa). This trend can enhance the health of both our bodies and the planet. That is, by choosing more plant foods, we’ll end up eating less meat and animal protein. If each of us were to eat just one less pound of beef per week, greenhouse gas emissions would drop significantly. 16 coloradorunnermag.com

Expanding Your Sports Diet:
SEEDS AND GRAINS WHILE SEEDS and grains are health-enhancing choices to include in your sports diet, their nutritional value can sometimes get exaggerated. The following information offers a perspective on some “trendy” foods that are getting mainstreamed.
Nuts and Seeds Want to add a nice crunch, along with vitamins and minerals, to your sports diet? Sprinkle some slivered almonds, chopped walnuts, pistachios, sunflower and sesame seeds into your yogurt, cereal, salad, and smoothie. Nuts and seeds offer
protein, healthy fats, fiber, vitamin E, magnesium, and many other nutrients. The fact that a plant grows from a nut or seed indicates it is life sustaining. Many nuts and seeds offer alpha linoleic acid, also known as ALA, a type of health-protective omega-3 polyunsaturated fat. While ALA from plants is not as potent as the type of omega-3s found in fish, any omega-3 fat is better than none. But dieters beware! When you nonchalantly toss a few spoonfuls of nuts and seeds into your smoothies and salads to pump up their nutritional value, you can also easily toss in 100 to 400 calories.
While vegans may need this protein and calorie boost, weight-conscious athletes who consume dairy and animal proteins might want to think twice. Comparing Seeds and Nuts The chart below shows how 1/4 cup of nuts and seeds (two spoonfuls or a large handful) adds a lot of calories but minimal protein towards the daily target of about 60 to 90 grams of protein. Vegans still need additional plant proteins, like beans and tofu, to get enough protein. Flax seeds, commonly consumed for their ALA omega-3 fat benefits, need to be ground before being eaten. Otherwise, they pass through your intestines whole and undigested. Chia seeds also offer ALA omega-3 fats, but you don’t need to grind them. Just sprinkle chia on yogurt and enjoy the crunch. When soaked in water for 10 minutes, chia seeds create a gel that can be used as a thickener for smoothies and as an alternative to eggs and oils in some recipes. The slimy consistency of soaked chia seeds can be tough to enjoy for some athletes. If you fall into the “no thank you camp,” worry not. You have many other options for enjoyably consuming similar nutrients in other seeds and nuts. Sunflower seeds have a mild, pleasing taste when added to salads, trail mix, or cold cereals. For people with peanut allergies, sunflower butter is a popular alternative to peanut butter. Pumpkin seeds, also known as pepitas, are slower to eat when you buy them in the shell. This can save unwanted calories. Hemp seeds are touted as containing all the essential amino acids. Hemp adds a protein-boost to vegan diets, but at a high price. Hemp seeds costs about $15 per pound, as compared to soy nuts,
that also have all the amino acids, about $3.50/lb. Sesame seeds have a gentle flavor and make a nice addition to stir-fried tofu or chicken. Although sesame seeds are touted as being calciumrich, their calcium is poorly absorbed. Chopped nuts, such as walnuts or slivered almonds, add a protein boost, but not as much of a protein bonus as many athletes think. If you ate half a cup of walnuts (two man-sized handfuls), you’d get only 8 grams of protein. For the same calories, you could add 1.5 cups of cottage cheese to your salad and get five times more protein (40 grams). Grains Both whole and refined grain foods offer carbohydrates that easily fuel your muscles. Whole grains include whole wheat, brown rice, corn (including popcorn), oats, barley, millet, and quinoa. Unrefined grains offer trace minerals, such as magnesium and copper, that refined grains don’t offer because they are lost in processing. However, most refined grains are enriched with B-vitamins and iron, two important nutrients for athletes. So, if you end up eating some white pasta or bread, there’s no need to fret! Dietary guidelines allow for half of the grains you consume to be refined. Quinoa is actually a seed, but we eat it as a grain, and it offers more protein than other grains. But take note (see the chart below): Quinoa is not a protein powerhouse, so eat it with tofu, beans or yogurt to reach the target of 20 to 30 grams protein per meal. Quinoa is also expensive: $6 per pound, as compared to brown rice at $1.50 per pound. The bottom line: When you resolve to “eat healthier,” be sure to

create a sustainable plan that will offer lifelong enjoyment. While you want to explore new foods, you don’t have to routinely choke down seeds and whole grains that do not really please your taste buds. By filling your meals with a variety of wholesome foods, including generous portions of colorful fruits and vegetables, you’ll be able to consume abundant nutrients that invest in both good health and top performance. Plus, you’ll also help save the planet by choosing more seeds and grains and fewer steaks and chops. Nancy Clark, MS, RD, CSSD is a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics. BIG TOE PAIN
THE BIG TOE JOINT is comprised of two main bones, the first metatarsal and the proximal phalanx. The ends of these bones are covered with cartilage which allows them to guide freely and joyously propel runners from one step to another during daily runs. Pain in the big toe joint has probably happened to most, if not all of us runners. It takes many forms, from the prominent “bunion” bump on the inside portion of the joint, a painful bump on the top of the joint, and lastly, pain deep within the big toe from damage to the cartilage. Luckily, there are many treatment options available depending on which problem the runner is experiencing. If the first metatarsal moves inward, the resultant prominence is called a bunion. Bunions that are not painful do not require any form of treatment. Painful bunions, however, are another matter. Shoe wear modifications are usually the best initial intervention. Shoes with a wide toe box are made by most running shoe companies and can allow extra space to accommodate a wider foot. Toe spacers placed between the first and second toe can sometimes help to alleviate pressure over the bunion bump as well. If symptoms persist despite these measures, consultation with a physician is warranted. Surgery to straighten the toe is an option, but should only be done if all conservative treatment measures fail. Damage to the cartilage of the big toe joint is another common problem in runners. In early stage arthritis, discomfort is usually limited to the top part of the big toe joint. Range of motion is limited and often times painful as the runner rises up onto 18 coloradorunnermag.com

TH E FAST L AN E
RUNNING AFICIONADOS will see a new name among the top ranks of distance runners these days, as elite speedster Michele (formerly Suszek) Yates recently tied the knot. Her familiar face and top finishes, however, will stay the same. The 30-year-old from Littleton has a long list of recent accomplishments, including 2012 USA 50 Mile Trail Champion, 2013 USA 100K Trail Champion, 2011 USA Mountain Trail Teammate, and 2008 and 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials Qualifier.
What are some of the biggest highlights in your racing career? One of the biggest highlights in my racing career was coaching myself to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Trials in the road marathon, and then again for 2012, although by 2012 I did have six months of coaching in 2009 that I learned a lot from. My proudest moment was earning a spot on the USA Mountain Trail team in 2011 to compete at the world championships in Tirana, Albania. The most surprising highlight has to be winning the USA 50 Mile Trail Championships last year and the USA 100K Trail Championships this year. The 50 mile was just a challenge I wanted to take on for myself and it sounded like a fun road trip with my best friend Erin. I tried to race smart (having never raced the distance before), but I was confident in my trail abilities. The course was three loops and for the first two I stuck with Melanie Fryer, an elite ultra runner. I decided that if I felt good I would just hammer down on the last loop, with Melanie or not. I felt good. What are your long-term goals? My long term goals would be to win a World Championship, make the USA team for the Mountain Trail team again, and have the team dominate! I’d want to earn a spot on some USA running team for the 2016 Olympics (I am hoping trail will become a sport!). Another win and course record at the USA 50 mile trail race this March, break the “American Trail 100 Mile Record,” which doesn’t necessarily exist, but one women has run 14 hours, 57 minutes and 18 seconds on a trail, which some consider “the record.” Why Colorado? What makes Colorado so special to you? Actually, I hated the fact that so many athletes trained here and fought moving here for a little bit because I didn’t want to be caught up in “just moving to Colorado because every other athlete did.” I like to train a lot by myself, and even though I’ve moved several times in this great state, I realized there are many places to train here that aren’t crowded and that are absolutely beautiful and perfect for training. Colorado has the four seasons, which I love, and the mountains and trails that are perfect for outdoor activities, training, and fun! The mild winters help keep runners training. Colorado just feels like home to me. What type of training regimen do you follow? My days start out at 6am with a tempo run, then a quick run with one or both of my dogs, breakfast and a shower, some paperwork/programming for my online coaching business, eat again, then go to the gym to work and train clients, back home to do a speed workout, lift weights with core work, stretch, shower and dinner with a little bit more work.

MICHELE YATES
By Amanda Hodges
Do you follow any specific nutrition plans? I am dairy and gluten free so I actually make a lot of my own food with the products I can have. I have food allergies! I pretty much eat the same things everyday which consist of fruits, veggies, lean proteins, The Simply bars, and Honey Nut Chex. I use GU Energy products pre, during, and post workouts, and GU Brew is great after workouts. I also drink at least one Body Armor Super Drink a day - liquid vitamins! What is your biggest challenge? Having to work part-time at a gym and getting my training in is the biggest challenge in order to achieve my goals. I just take it a day at a time and my wonderful husband, Wyatt, helps out a lot too. I try to stay as organized as possible and prepare for the week on Sundays. For example, I make a huge pot of homemade chicken soup to have on hand if I can’t fix dinner. What are your favorite races in Colorado? The Pikes Peak Marathon because it’s not just the challenge of 26.2 miles. It’s a technical trail, has elevation, and one heck of a fun down hill. The Crazy Legs 10K is also a great trail race in Loveland. Where do you like to train in Colorado? I now reside in beautiful Roxborough Village, by Waterton Canyon, Chatfield Reservoir, Deer Creek and Roxborough State Park, so as you can see, I have candyland in my backyard. Although, Colorado being as awesome as it is, I do shoot up to Chimney Gulch trail in Golden sometimes and truly miss Rabbit Mountain where I used to live. I am always open to new trails, back country roads, and any speedy cement I can find. Colorado’s trails, parks, bike paths, and roads all make for easy, no excuse training because of the majestic beauty of the land here. Photography By DEE BUDDEN

Frosty’s Frozen Five and Ten Not So Frosty to the South Platte River trail for the Frosty’s (not-so) Frozen Five and Ten Mile. The glorious weather and pristine conditions made for a great race and some blazing finishing times. In the men’s ten mile event, 27-year old Tristan Mitchell of Centennial knocked out his competition with a 56:20 finishing time. Second place finisher Christopher Desilets of Denver finished up in 58:23. The women’s ten miler saw newly-crowned Trail Runner of the Year Kim Dobson take top honors as she not only finished fourth overall, but set a new course record time of 1:02:00. Team Alchemy’s Nicole Chyr wasn’t far behind as she crossed the finish line in second in 1:04:07. The finish in the men’s 5 mile event was rather close, as Cheyenne, WY’s Mark Currell nabbed first in 26:14 with Colorado Springs’ Adam Rich hot on his heels, finishing second in 26:45. The women’s five miler also saw a new record. No surprise here, as Heather Utrata broke her own 2012 event record, finishing up in 30:12. Coming in second was a friendly face in Runners Roost’s Bridget Tschappat who crossed the line in 31:28. GERALD ROMERO OF COLORADO SPRINGS FINISHES THE FROSTY’S FROZEN FIVE MILE IN 30:11.

Runners Compete in the RunDenver Race Series On a beautiful, albeit slightly chilly morning, the second race in the RUNDENVER race series took place at Denver’s Washington Park on January 20. The Polar Bear 5K attracted almost 600 participants that ran and walked around Washington Park’s roads under sunny skies. Kids were treated to face painters and balloon artists. In the men’s race, 17-year old Mehmed Erkoceriz from Superior took top honors with a finishing time of 17:51. Coming in second was Lakewood’s Daniel Glass in 18:43 and 52-year old speedster Dan Valerio came in third in 19:15. The ladies’ race was pretty exciting, as first and second place female finishers – Kelsey Martin and Xenia Flores – finished third and fourth overall, respectively. Martin, a 31-year old from Denver, finished up in 18:53 and 22year old Flores from Brighton was right behind her in 18:58. Age group award winners received custom race medals. THE ARMS TH E LI G HTE R S I D E
HAVE IT
Many runners enjoy the purity of our sport and love communing with nature without modern technological accoutrements. Heck, some runners have further advanced the bare-necessity approach and have removed one-third of the running trinity of shorts, shirt, and shoes. Thankfully, it’s not the shorts as they’ve instead chosen to relegate their running shoes to superfluous status. However, when pesky injuries arise and we’re searching for greener endorphin pastures, we’re pleased with the availability of many technological cross-training modalities that significantly elevate our heart rate just thinking about them. What is universal among almost all cross-training exercise equipment is that they require the predominant involvement of our legs. Let’s be honest, most runners don’t devote a whole lot of attention to the endurance of their triceps and it’s relatively clear that even elite runners aren’t going to win too many arm wrestling contests. Our arm strength would really only come into play in a race if we were crawling to the finishing line after hitting the wall or pushing someone out of the way in a mad scramble for the last cinnamon raisin bagel at the post race refreshments. The difficulty for me arose when I learned I needed knee surgery and was not going to be able to bear weight on my right leg for a while. I had to uncover new ways of achieving my daily dose of sweat, stopping short of sitting in a sauna for long stretches wearing two parkas and a ski mask or elevating my heart rate by consuming a steady flow of quintuple espressos. As runners, we’ve witnessed wheelchair athletes at races and their prodigious talents. They often train with exercise equipment that focuses on their upper body, including hand ergometers, or Krankcycles, but this equipment was not available at my local fitness center. I was getting stressed out over how to stress out my body via exercise (which used only my arms) when it suddenly dawned on me. I needed to think outside the socks. I was willing to try my hand (or arms) at anything and concluded I needed to see whether exercise machines could be used in a different manner than for which they were designed. I first eliminated the idea of lying face down on the fitness center floor in front of a stationary bicycle while reaching up to grab the bike’s pedals and creating my own arm ergometer. I tried it 62 coloradorunnermag.com

out but garnered too many people stepping on my back as I lay across the aisle. Plus my view from down there wasn’t exactly the greatest, and let’s just say a gym floor isn’t the most sanitary place in town. After circling the row of elliptical machines, the proverbial light bulb finally went off. I realized that if I stood on a short stool at the front of the machine (facing the elliptical and chest against the back of the display monitor), I could reach over to grab the arm handles and use them without involving my legs. My quest was over! I was no longer empty handed. Let’s just say my novel elliptical machine approach garnered more than my fair share of stares, accompanied by the quintessential “Really now?” expression. Many onlookers were obviously questioning my sanity as they politely tried to instruct me I was using the machine the wrong way. They were obviously not experienced with injured fanatical runners or they would have immediately understood our determined (albeit peculiar) mind-set. The runners at the fitness center would simply give me an approving nod as they strode by. They understood. Hands down. My arms-only workout served its cardiac conditioning purpose while my knee healed until I could eventually get back on the roads. Hopefully I won’t again be in the position of needing non-weight-bearing exercise. But if that does come to pass, I can rest easy knowing I could return to my novel approach with the elliptical. With open arms.
