90th
anniversary season 2016-17
I welcome you to the Philharmonic’s 90th Anniversary Season, a celebration of the proud history of this orchestra and this city. It gives me great pleasure to inaugurate our 10th decade with a season of concerts bursting with richness and spirit. El Pomar Masterworks presents monumental symphonies by Schubert and Mahler, playful pieces by Gershwin and Mozart, and six new works based on “America the Beautiful.” For me, the mix of living composers, commissioned pieces, and key classical works gives a good view of what orchestral music means today.

Philharmonic Pops delights all ages with the best of pop culture, including the music of Aretha Franklin, Paul McCartney, James Bond and the swing craze. The Al and Leigh Buettner Vanguard Performances highlight one of my favorite parts of conducting. The unique format of these concerts offers an in-depth, multimedia, narrative and musical performance giving audiences the opportunity to learn more. The highlight of the series is Dvořák’s New World Symphony, a favorite among concertgoers.

A Beyond the ScoreTM presentation
Among the most popular symphonic works of all time, Dvořák’s 9th symphony is richly layered with the musical traditions of America. Dvořák was especially adept at turning folk melodies into grand classical themes, and his stirring treatments of African-American spirituals and Native American motifs were instantly recognized as a national treasure. 8

Paul Hindemith’s operatic tribute to the medieval painter Matthias Grünewald contains a story within a story. First performed in Berlin in 1934, the piece was labeled “degenerate” by the Nazi government—perhaps because the plot centers on the painter’s resolve to serve art above politics. Its turbulent themes and orchestration make this one of the most complex pieces in the classical repertoire. 9
