LEONARD BERNSTEIN AT 100
FESTIVAL GUIDE

JANUARY 27 - MARCH 3, 2018 Like many, my musical journey began at a very young age. My parents invited me into the musical world, and taught me to embrace it with vigor. My wife Mónica and I will do likewise with our sons. So it is that artists everywhere – be they musicians, sculptors, poets, actors, authors, dancers, painters and others – are at work studying the old masters, adding new ideas, and passing their values to the young. While we may not amass worldly treasures, we leave our own bequest for future generations. A profound, bountiful legacy. For the next six weeks, we will mark the legacy of Leonard Bernstein in his centennial year. Easily the most important American musician of his time, he was a conductor, composer, musician, and teacher. He made music come alive for generations of concertgoers, and made concert halls come alive. His avant garde sensibilities were accentuated by a deep love for history’s great composers. On Broadway, he turned Times Square upside down, speaking a language of rhythm and joyous bluster. Leonard Bernstein’s legacy – his bequest – is one of joy and humanity, music and innocence. This celebration of Leonard Bernstein includes fourteen concerts of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, plus many more events and activities presented by our gifted community partners. Musical encounters are laced throughout the Festival, but also themes of anti-violence and human rights that were so important to “Lenny.” Take this opportunity to immerse yourself in the life and legacy of Leonard Bernstein. On behalf of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, I welcome you to the Festival, and encourage you to discover for yourself the joyful legacy of America’s greatest musical voice.
Josep Caballé-Domenech, Music Director
The Colorado Springs Bernstein at 100 mural was installed on October 25 at the corner of Tejon Street and Vermijo Avenue. Commissioned by the Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs and designed by Kettle Fire Creative, the 300-square-foot once bright
mural boasts a color palette at
and poppy, yet cool and contemplative, echoing the diversity of Bernstein’s
artistic work. The contrasting perpendicular and curved lines represent the internal and external conflicts of Bernstein’s life. . . and the beauty that emerged from them.
In Bernstein’s voice, it proclaims:
“THIS WILL BE OUR REPLY TO VIOLENCE: TO MAKE MUSIC MORE INTENSELY, MORE BEAUTIFULLY, MORE DEVOTEDLY THAN EVER BEFORE.”
Leonard Bernstein
This proclamation came in response to the Kennedy assassination in 1963, and remains as relevant today. Doing justice to Leonard Bernstein’s
legacy means digging deeper than just the music. In
Bernstein’s centennial year, the Colorado Springs Philharmonic has partnered with numerous organizations throughout our community to present a six-week festival in celebration, including concerts, broadcasts, lectures, film screenings, art exhibitions, and more. Each one of these events
illuminates something of Bernstein’s character, legacy, and mission; each one intended to unite us and elevate the human
endeavor.
In 2018, the Colorado Springs Philharmonic and its partners will follow in his footsteps, making music and proclaiming the power
of creativity to overcome intolerance.

Leonard Bernstein left his musical mark on the seemingly separate realms of the concert hall, musical theatre, television and film, and criticism. In the spirit of Bernstein’s own educational mission, this “public musicology” conference aims to share insights on Bernstein’s work as a composer, conductor, and performer. Featuring an in-person interview with Jamie Bernstein, and a keynote talk by Harvard musicologist Carol Oja, presentations will consider musicals such as West Side Story, Bernstein’s unique conducting style, and his place in the broader world of American music.

Film Screenings and discussion presented with Colorado Springs Philharmonic musical interlude In addition to being the most gifted American composer of his time, Bernstein was a fierce champion of human rights. Through film and music, we explore the relationship between music, art, human rights, and Bernstein’s legacy. Features the Oscar-nominated “Joe’s Violin,” with a talk by scholar Seth Elliott Meyer and special performance by Philharmonic concertmaster Michael Hanson and principal pianist Kelly Zuercher.

Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs Bernstein at 100 Mural
Located at the southwest corner of Tejon and Vermijo, the mural celebrates Bernstein’s legacy of social justice. The dynamic design riffs on the building’s architecture, and uses a vibrant primary color palette built around the iconic “Bernstein Red” first seen in the Broadway poster for West Side Story. Funding and material support were generously provided by David Lord and Chuck Murphy, with additional funding and project management by Downtown Ventures.

Winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, the 2004 New York Drama Critics Circle Award, and the Outer Critics Circle Award, Lynn Nottage’s beautifully written and intensely personal story weaves a delicate tapestry of the joys and sorrows of an African-American seamstress in 1905 New York City. Esther sews elegant intimates for socialites and prostitutes alike as a vibrant cast of characters plays part in her determined search for love and respect in a world that seems to overlook her.

Floyd D. Tunson: Janus Art Exhibit and Opening Reception
Depicted with two faces – one looking to the future and one to the past – Janus is, in ancient Roman myth, the god of beginnings, transitions, time, and duality. In the spirit of Bernstein’s own personal duality, this new body of large-scale abstract work looks at life from two directions. Events include Gallery Conversation with Tunson and his lifelong friend, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa; and a Town Hall: Race, Class, and the American Stage with readings and discussion hosted by Kevin Landis and Idris Goodwin, joined by a panel of experts.

The Unanswered Question: Six Talks at Harvard by Leonard Bernstein
In a series of lectures filmed at Harvard University in 1973, legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein examines music from every age and place in the search for a worldwide, innate musical grammar. Using analogies between music and linguistics, Bernstein shows how this language can be understood as an aesthetic surface.

Bernstein West Side Story: Symphonic Dances To open the Festival, nothing could be more fitting than Bernstein’s striking first symphony, Jeremiah, which catapulted the young Bernstein into the role of a major American symphonist. And it began his musical exploration of a theme that would inspire works throughout his life. “The work I have been writing all my life,” he said in 1977, “is about the struggle that is born of the crisis of our century, a crisis of faith.” In his view, renewal of faith requires a return to innocence and an overwhelming belief in our common humanity.
Listen Up – In the second movement of Jeremiah, listen for several unmistakable soaring musical phrases that returned 15 years later in the blockbuster West Side Story.

As Aristotle said, learning is the greatest of pleasures. My work reflects my journey to acquire knowledge. Along the way I have become a Janus. Looking at life from one direction, I see the terror of chaos, man’s inhumanity to man, mortality, and the vastness of the unknown. From another direction, the human condition seems like a magnificent, orderly evolution of extraordinary beauty. The totality of my work reflects my quest to comprehend and express these forces and their interconnectedness. Even my non-objective painting is based on this dialectic, where uninhibited strokes play against geometric order. - Floyd D. Tunson
