n behalf of all of us at the Colorado Symphony, I’d like to welcome you to our 2018/19 Season! Throughout my first season as music director, I’ve been blown away by the support and passion of the Denver arts community. We have a tremendous foundation in place, and I look forward to building on that during our second season together. Our 2018/19 Season is positively overflowing with extraordinary talent. On October 13, Tony®-Award winner Leslie Odom, Jr. (the original Aaron Burr in the smash-hit musical Hamilton) will join us for an evening featuring songs from his chart-topping solo album. On January 10, we’ll welcome a living legend back to Boettcher Concert Hall as violinist Itzhak Perlman joins us for a special performance of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. And that’s just the beginning, as we’ll be featuring fantastic soloists all season long. We’re thrilled to welcome violinist Pinchas Zukerman, cellist Joshua Roman, and pianists Stephen Hough and Joyce Yang, as well as our very own Concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams, Principal Oboe Peter Cooper, and Principal Horn Michael Thornton. For almost a century, the Colorado Symphony has performed a wide variety of the best music ever composed, and our 2018/19 Season will be no different. Here are a few of my personal highlights: Just before Veterans Day, we’ll perform Benjamin Britten’s masterpiece, War Requiem, featuring two orchestras, three vocal soloists, the Colorado Symphony Chorus, and the Colorado Children’s Chorale. We’re proud to share this astonishing, exquisite marriage of music and poetry to celebrate our veterans and commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I. Another program we’re particularly eager to share with you explores the history of the American experience, culminating with Dvořák’s landmark “New World” Symphony. We’ll preface this classic with two pieces featuring the words of distinctly American orators: Aaron Copland’s tribute to President Abraham Lincoln in Lincoln Portrait, and Joseph Schwantner’s tribute to civil rights icon Martin Luther King, Jr. in New Morning for the World (Daybreak of Freedom). As always, there’s much more to our season than our Classics series. We’ll perform the scores of Home Alone and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix™ as we screen the movies live, and we’ll pay tribute to such pop icons as Nat King Cole and Tom Petty. A new holiday tradition begins with a brand new program titled A Classical Christmas, while Denver favorites A Colorado Christmas and Too Hot to Handel also return as part of a stunning December lineup. The 2018/19 Season promises to be our most spectacular season yet, and we can’t wait to share this beautiful music with you. See you in the hall! Sincerely,

SEPT 20 THU 7:00 The Mexican Cultural Center, along with the Colorado Symphony, presents Latin Beats: Sonidos de las Américas. In its second year, this unique community concert celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month and Latin culture’s influence on sound in the Americas. This concert will showcase a fusion of traditional, classical, and contemporary music augmented by the Colorado Symphony’s soaring orchestrations. This event is a free community concert. Tickets for this performance are available two weeks prior to the event at the Colorado Symphony Box Office. All seating is general admission and a ticket does not guarantee a seat.

Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra were two undisputed masters of “The Great American Songbook.” During their storied careers, they appeared together several times on television and on stage. Great fans of one another’s work, their mutual admiration transformed into pure magic when performing together. Sadly, they never realized a recording immortalizing their collaborative legacy. Your Colorado Symphony celebrates three titans of American music with an evening of urban symphonic jazz, exploring the evolution of jazz in the concert hall from Gershwin to Ellington to John Adams. Gershwin’s Concerto in F, the first large-scale jazz composition in a traditionally classical form, stands out as one of the most striking and original pieces of its time. Captivating pianist Joyce Yang makes her much-anticipated Colorado Symphony debut, bringing a ‘poetic and sensitive pianism’ to Gershwin’s work. Ellington’s last major work, Three Black Kings, captures one of the greatest songwriters of all time exploring the orchestral form, while John Adams’ City Noir evokes the tone of 20th century America in a work that harkens back to the golden age of jazz.

Alice Roberts is Professor of Anthropology & Paleopathology at The University of Birmingham. Carolyn Porco is the leader of the imaging science team for NASA’s Cassini-Huygens Space Probe studying Saturn.

In his first Colorado Symphony appearance since 2004, guest conductor Carlos Kalmar leads the orchestra in a performance of varied works. Glière’s sweeping and unprecedentedly demanding Concerto for Horn is performed by Principal Horn Michael Thornton. Contrary to its name, Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony provides a complete, essential symphonic experience despite the mystery surrounding its incomplete status. In a stirring conclusion to the program, Wagner’s bright and virtuosic Prelude to Die Meistersinger introduces the opera’s most important themes in a beautifully self-contained fashion, making it a magnificent concert piece.

On the eve of the 100th anniversary of the November 11, 1918 Armistice that signaled the end of World War I, your Colorado Symphony presents a once-in-a-generation performance of Benjamin Britten’s masterpiece, War Requiem. Commissioned to mark the opening of a new cathedral for the city of Coventry in 1962 after a bombing destroyed the previous cathedral in 1940, Britten, a lifelong pacifist and conscientious objector during World War II, created this very public expression of his beliefs about ‘war and the pity of war.’ In a master stroke, he included texts by the First World War poet Wilfred Owen, providing an ironic commentary on the classic Latin Requiem Mass while serving as a reminder to future generations on the wickedness of war. Joined by the Colorado Symphony Chorus, the Colorado Children’s Chorale, and three vocal soloists, Brett Mitchell leads your Colorado Symphony in its first performance of this monumental undertaking since 2001. 12

Vienna Boys Choir

NOV 11 SUN 2:30 Boys have been singing at the Viennese court since the 14th century. Historians settled on 1498 as the foundation date for the Vienna Boys Choir and, until 1918, the Choir sang exclusively for the imperial court, at Mass, concerts, private functions, and on state occasions. Today, the Vienna Boys Choir consists of 100 boys between the ages of ten and fourteen from dozens of nations, divided into four touring groups. Each group spends nine to eleven weeks of the school year on tour. Among them, the four choirs give 300 concerts and performances each year before almost half a million people. Join us for an evening of awe-inspiring vocals with a small ensemble of your Colorado Symphony adding to the uniqueness of this concert evening. This performance will feature only a small portion of the musicians of the Colorado Symphony

The second movement – Allegretto – stands alone as a powerful, haunting piece of classical music and remains one of Beethoven’s most well known works. Joshua Roman makes his Colorado Symphony debut performing Mason Bates’ Cello Concerto written especially for Roman. Brett Mitchell conducts your Colorado Symphony in a contrasting program of works both old and new. Berlioz’s bombastic, boisterous Symphonie fantastique is one of the first to tell a complete story through pure orchestral music as he details his own personal pursuit of Harriet Smithson, the Shakespearean actress who later became his wife. Using a recurrent melodic theme to tie the five movements together, Berlioz foreshadows the Wagnerian Leitmotif in a programmatic work that shows the range of human emotions. Featured soloist Conrad Tao performs Ravel’s Piano Concerto, a colorful Gershwin-inspired work with American spirit and jazz flavors while Missy Mazzoli’s Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres) contains elements of Ravel’s impressionistic nature as it presents music in the shape of a solar system as a collection of rococo loops twist around each other within a larger orbit.

Associate conductor Christopher Dragon leads your Colorado Symphony in a weekend celebration of film score composers and those who influenced them. Herrmann’s ingenious use of strings conveys a “black and white sound” on his suite from Psycho, which mirrors the black and white images of Hitchcock’s haunting cinematic thriller. Ravel, who heavily influenced future generations of film composers, originally wrote Mother Goose as a piano duet but later revised and expanded the original work into an orchestrated piece. The program is capped by the legendary Danny Elfman, who composed the scores for treasured films such as Batman, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Good Will Hunting. Brilliant soloist Sandy Cameron performs the Colorado premiere of Elfman’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, “Eleven Eleven,” a piece she helped debut in 2017.

All ages enjoy visiting the Colorado Symphony and we’ve created unique educational programs for youth. Looking for something awesome to do in Denver? EDUCATIONAL PERFORMANCES • AGES 8-14

We’re saving a seat for young audiences at Boettcher Concert Hall. Each year, more than 20,000 students in grades 3-12 engage with the Colorado Symphony to learn about and experience the exciting, enriching world of symphonic music. PE TITE MUSIQUE

SMALL ENSEMBLE PROGRAM • AGES 0-7

This community concert introduces the instruments of the orchestra to young children. Performed by a 16-piece chamber orchestra and narrator, this interactive program includes the musical telling of an age-appropriate story, a sing-a-long, and a live dance-a-long, too. MASTER MENTORS

COACHING, INSTRUMENT DEMOS • ALL AGES

This highly flexible program provides support for music students of any grade. At the request of the teacher, Colorado Symphony Musician Teaching Artists can lead instrument demonstrations, listening/singing/movement workshops, coaching for band/orchestra students, advice for students interested in pursuing a career in the musical performing arts, workshops for general music students that support specific units of study such as music of the Renaissance, composition/improvisation, or another specific request that a music teacher may have.

VERY YOUNG COMPOSERS

MUSIC CREATION RESIDENCY PROGRAM • AGES 8-10

Take a look inside our Very Young Composers program — giving students with little to no musical training the opportunity to be more than just an observer. Colorado Symphony teaching artists work with elementary school students to create original pieces of music that are then performed in their school, community, and at Boettcher Concert Hall. Very Young Composers started in 1995 by Jon Deak, then-composer in residence with the Colorado Symphony, and is now an internationally recognized program. Women of Note is a group of highly engaged symphony lovers who appreciate listening to and learning about musicians and their respective instrument throughout the year. Members enjoy four luncheons a season, which include a recital and a Q&A session from various Colorado Symphony musicians at each event. More than 95% of the funds raised through membership fees provide direct salary support to a different female Colorado Symphony musician each year! COLORADO SYMPHONY BALL
