TO OUR 2019/20 SEASON
rom all of us at the Colorado Symphony, welcome to our 2019/20 Season! Colorado is so fortunate to have a world-class orchestra right here in Denver, and as music director, it’s a privilege to lead such an incredible group of musicians. In my third year on the podium, it’s still a thrill to walk onstage at Boettcher Concert Hall, and the nightly support we receive from the Denver arts community is second to none. We’re thrilled to present a 2019/20 Season teeming with incredible talent and exciting repertoire. Superstar soprano Renée Fleming returns to the Colorado Symphony in November with renowned baritone Rod Gilfry for the Colorado premiere of Kevin Puts’ The Brightness of Light. Another extraordinary soprano—Emmy® and Tony-Award® winner Kristin Chenoweth (the original Glinda in the smash-hit musical Wicked)—will join us for a superb evening of Broadway hits in September. And that’s just the beginning, as we’ll be featuring a host of fantastic soloists all season long, including pianists Olga Kern and Natasha Paremski, violinists Angelo Xiang Yu and Simone Porter, as well as our very own Principal Clarinet Jason Shafer. It’s a particularly special season for our orchestra family as we celebrate Yumi Hwang-Williams’ 20th season as Concertmaster. To commemorate the occasion, Yumi will perform as featured soloist as we open the 2019 Classics calendar with Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto. Here are a few of my other personal highlights from the season: We’ll celebrate the 35th Anniversary of our extraordinary Colorado Symphony Chorus with a performance of the Verdi Requiem, which they first performed during their debut on October 25, 1984. Nearly 35 years to the day, we’ll breathe new life into Verdi’s masterpiece, which remains one of the most cherished choral works of all time. We’re also excited to launch the 2020 celebration of Beethoven’s 250th birthday with a once-in-a-generation performance of his monumental Missa Solemnis. Our Movie at the Symphony concerts continue as we perform the scores of Disney’s Fantasia, The Goonies, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows™ Part 1 as we screen the movies live. Of course, our holiday concert schedule is overflowing with festive fun, including A Colorado Christmas, A Night in Vienna, and after a one-year hiatus, the return of Handel’s Messiah — with a fresh, new perspective, all part of a stunning December lineup. Our 2019/20 Season promises to be a spectacular journey through some of the best music ever composed, and we can’t wait to share it with you. See you in the Hall! Sincerely,
Brett Mitchell Music Director, Colorado Symphony

Usually you’ll find Rick Steves touring the great destinations of Europe. Now you can join him on a different journey: A Symphonic Journey. Just as travel broadens one’s perspectives, so can music. In this hour-long concert special, Rick teams up with the Colorado Symphony on a musical tour that begins in the US, then touches down in seven different European countries as Rick paints the cultural context in words, with the orchestra performing stirring anthems — Strauss in Austria, Wagner in Germany, Smetana in the Czech Republic, Verdi in Italy, Elgar in England, Grieg in Norway, Berlioz in France — each accompanied by glorious video footage. While each piece celebrates a particular nationality, the finale, Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”, celebrates a continent whose motto is “united in diversity.” - Performance includes visual imagery projected on large format screens -

Brett Mitchell commemorates the opening of his third season as music director with a program worthy of celebration. To honor her 20th season as Concertmaster, Yumi Hwang-Williams showcases her exceptional lyricism and agility as featured soloist on Mendelssohn’s revered Violin Concerto. Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances — the composer’s last major orchestral work — serves as a fitting summation of his career, filled with autobiographical echoes audiences will recognize from many of his previous compositions. GRAMMY®-nominated composer Anna Clyne’s bright, optimistic Masquerade evokes the essence of celebration as it explores the courtship between music and dance — a fitting and fanciful frolic to usher in the Colorado Symphony’s Classics season. Your Colorado Symphony presents one of the great works of Romanticism with Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, a meticulously structured meditation on fate in four movements. The first half of the performance offers an intimate taste of Americana as Libby Larsen’s Deep Summer Music — originally recorded by the Colorado Symphony in 2001 — evokes colorful images of sweeping plains and harvest winds. Copland’s Clarinet Concerto is made up of two movements — one slow, one fast — with the second embodying the essence of twentieth century American jazz and showcasing the Colorado Symphony’s own Principal Clarinet, Jason Shafer, as featured soloist on an evening of symphonic bliss. One-to-watch conductor Alexander Shelley — unanimous winner of the prestigious Leeds Conductors Competition in 2005 and Music Director for the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa — makes his Colorado Symphony debut leading a prodigious program of musical giants. The program begins with two cornerstone works by Tchaikovsky as up-and-coming cellist Cicely Parnas graces the stage to artfully present Variations on a Rococo Theme, a nostalgic look back at his eighteenth century musical influences. Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Overture is a magical fantasy based on Shakespeare’s famous tragedy and featuring the iconic love theme that has become one of the most recognizable melodies in the world. Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony offers a departure from his traditionally bright, folk theme-filled melodies, instead offering a sinister, emotional composition full of dark sonorities and biting rhythms, capping a night of energizing masterworks.

Ingrid Fliter — a pre-eminent interpreter of Chopin — lends her expertise to his Second Piano Concerto. Debussy’s La Mer is a work of marvelous imagination as he captures the essence and mood of the Mediterranean Sea, a place he visited frequently during his childhood. Ravel’s La Valse caps the program with a glittering homage to the Viennese Waltz, as it is both glorified and deconstructed in a melodic strain of rhythmic fluidity — a fittingly romantic end to a program brimming with European style. The Colorado Symphony continues its shared vision of music education with longstanding partner the Denver Young Artists Orchestra (DYAO) under the baton of Colorado Symphony Assistant Conductor, Bertie Baigent. In July of 2018, the DYAO and the Colorado Symphony renewed a commitment to pursuing the shared mission value of music education in a strategic partnership that will allow young musicians from the DYAO greater access and mentorship from the full-time professional musicians of the Colorado Symphony. The greatest shared feature of the DYAO Alliance with the Colorado Symphony will include soloist performance opportunities between both organizations, music coaching, and mentorship fostered by Colorado’s only full-time professional orchestra, masterclass opportunities for DYAO students with Colorado Symphony musicians and featured guest artists, new performance opportunities between ensembles, and a renewed fervor for volunteerism between organizations.

Join your Colorado Symphony for the launch of a yearlong 2020 celebration of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250th birthday with one of the cardinal achievements of his venerated career. Featuring the Colorado Symphony Chorus and four vocal soloists, the monumental Missa Solemnis is a masterpiece of spiritual expression and musical innovation. Composed around the time of his Ninth Symphony, the two works shed light on Beethoven’s religious world view — where the Ninth’s ‘Ode to Joy’ is a hymn to man and brotherhood, the Missa Solemnis is a hymn to God. Through it all, Beethoven expresses universal spiritual ideas in a manner that could not have been accomplished by words alone, concluding with a fraught yet unanswered plea for peace amid the drumbeats of war. You won’t want to miss this once-in-a-generation performance as conducted by Music Director Brett Mitchell. COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG

Brett Mitchell, conductor The Percussion Collective RAVEL Boléro CHRISTOPHER THEOFANIDIS Drum Circles: Concerto for 7 Percussionists and Orchestra R. STRAUSS Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life)
Driving percussion propels this energetic program led by Music Director Brett Mitchell. Ravel’s rhythmic Boléro, features many of our musicians in starring roles, including the ever-present snare drum which continues unabated throughout as the orchestra gradually builds in sound to an exultant conclusion. Christopher Theofanidis’ Drum Circles highlights a virtuosic dialogue between seven percussionists and the orchestra, creating a spatially, colorful rhythmic experience. Strauss’ not-so-subtly autobiographical Ein Heldenleben is laid out in six beautifully interconnected sections, each clearly defined in sound while telling the courageous story of its virtuous hero — Richard Strauss himself — in a bombastic finale to a thrilling performance. 24

The Colorado Symphony presents its debut collaboration with Denver’s Clyfford Still Museum. Music Director Brett Mitchell guides you through a program of contemporary works and premieres a specially commissioned piece on this evening’s program. Powerful and awesome – massive areas of color – jagged, flame-like shapes – strange shadows, echoes: these are our experiences of paintings by Clyfford Still. How would this vision sound if it became music? James Clarke’s new work for the Colorado Symphony is a ‘kindred spirit’ with Clyfford Still’s art – a meeting of minds as two art forms explode together. In partnership with the Clyfford Still Museum

Rune Bergmann, conductor Garrick Ohlsson, piano MOZART Overture to Don Giovanni, K. 527 BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58 NIELSEN Symphony No. 4, Op. 29, “The Inextinguishable”
Dynamic conductor Rune Bergmann makes his Colorado Symphony debut, lending his elegance and expertise to the “Inextinguishable” Fourth Symphony from Nielsen. Of it, the composer wrote “Music is life, and life is inextinguishable,” and indeed from the very first moment it offers an electrifying jolt of energy and rarely deviates from that dynamism for the remainder of the piece. Mozart’s genius is on full display throughout his masterful Overture to Don Giovanni, which was famously composed the night before the opera’s premiere. Pianist Garrick Ohlsson highlights the performance in his return to Boettcher Concert Hall, bringing exquisite technique to Beethoven’s innovative Fourth Piano Concerto — a work of unparalleled invention offering an array of fresh, surprising, and treasurable ideas that are sure to delight.

From the ominous, fierce, and remorseless Mars to the majestic and poignant beauty of Saturn, Holst draws on their astrological traits, personifying each planet based on their mythological character to create seven unique scores that are both timeless and otherworldly. Your Colorado Symphony welcomes back former Music Director Andrew Litton with an opening of Walton’s Crown Imperial — originally composed for the coronation of King George VI — while Denver favorite Natasha Paremski lends her trademark flair to Prokofiev’s romantic Second Piano Concerto, rounding out an evening of ethereal masterworks. 26

The curse of the ninth — the belief that a composer’s ninth symphony is destined to be their last — weighed heavily on Mahler’s mind as he neared the milestone, even going so far as to compose a “Tenth Symphony,” Das Lied von der Erde, after his eighth in an effort to creatively circumvent the curse. Famously, Beethoven, Schubert, Bruckner, Dvořák, and Spohr all passed away prior to completing a tenth symphony, and in the end Mahler succumbed to illness shortly after finishing his ninth as well. Mahler’s “farewell to the world” serves as an incredible summation to a masterful career, quoting many of his previous compositions in a work brimming with anger, hysteria, and nostalgia in equal measure, before giving way to a calm acceptance in the finale. Join Music Director Brett Mitchell and your Colorado Symphony for a powerful performance teeming with emotion.

ARE YOU MUSICURIOUS?
IN-SCHOOL CONCERTS
Symphonic music impacts people of all ages and the Colorado Symphony has created unique educational programs specifically for students in Colorado. Are you looking for a fun, educational activity in Denver for your school, troop, or club? Discover the region’s premier symphony orchestra through active participation in our youth education and outreach programs. We are pleased to provide these programs and look forward to seeing all of you this season. MUSICURIOUS YOUTH CONCERTS
GRADES 3-12
We’re saving a seat for your class at Boettcher Concert Hall! Each year more than 30,000 students in grades 3-12 engage with the Colorado Symphony, learning and experiencing the exciting, enriching world of symphonic music. PETITE MUSIQUE
PRESCHOOL
This community concert introduces the instruments of the orchestra to young children. Performed by a 16-piece chamber orchestra and narrator, this interactive program includes the musical telling of an age-appropriate story, a sing-a-long, and a live dance-a-long, too! 42
PRE K-2
Bring an ensemble of Colorado Symphony musicians to your school to present a delightful program of music and storytelling that stimulates children’s imaginations using music as a prominent element of the story. VERY YOUNG COMPOSERS
Bring your own composition to life with our Very Young Composers program — giving students with little-to-no musical training the opportunity to be more than just an observer. Colorado Symphony teaching artists work with elementary school students to create original pieces of music that are then performed in their school, community, and at Boettcher Concert Hall. Very Young Composers was started in 1995 by Jon Deak, then-composer in residence with the Colorado Symphony, and is now an internationally recognized program. We are proud to present the work of these young composers. Learn more about these and other programs at coloradosymphony.org/education.

BEYOND THE CONCERT HALL
BEETHOVEN AND BREWS
Enjoy an exclusive beer tasting paired with the sounds of Colorado Symphony musicians performing live in breweries throughout the city. Beethoven and Brews features an ensemble performance, light hors d’oeuvres, and samples of beer from your favorite local breweries. WOMEN OF NOTE
Women of Note is a group of highly engaged symphony lovers who appreciate listening to and learning about musicians and their respective instrument throughout the year. Members enjoy four luncheons a season, which include a recital and a Q&A session from various Colorado Symphony musicians at each event. More than 95% of the funds raised through membership fees provide direct salary support to a different female Colorado Symphony musician each year!
COLORADO SYMPHONY BALL
Save the date for the next Colorado Symphony Ball! Saturday, April 25, 2020. It’s the best party in town and, more importantly, the largest fundraiser for your Colorado Symphony! COLORADO SYMPHONY GUILD
Become an active partner of the Colorado Symphony by joining the Colorado Symphony Guild. For 84 years the Guild has been the premier support organization for the Colorado Symphony. INFO
