THE 2017 MARGARET PHIPPS AWARD PRESENTED TO

ALEXANDRA (SANDY) ELLIOTT AND IN MEMORY OF JOHN T.M. WRIGHT The Colorado Symphony established the Margaret Phipps Award in 1993 to honor the philanthropic contributions and memory of Margaret Rodgers Phipps. A Denver native, Mrs. Phipps was celebrated throughout Colorado for her remarkable devotion to the arts community. She served two terms as the president of the Denver Symphony Association and was a passionate advocate of music and the arts. This year, the Colorado Symphony is proud to present the 2017 Margaret Phipps Award to Symphony Board of Trustees member and community leader Alexandra (Sandy) Elliott and in memory of her late husband John T.M. Wright. A longtime Colorado resident, Ms. Elliott met Mr. Wright at a fundraising event for the Denver Chamber Orchestra. Their shared love of the performing arts and dedication to charitable giving made them lifelong supporters of both the Colorado Symphony and the Colorado Ballet, as well as other causes throughout the city and state. Mr. Wright, whom Ms. Elliott describes as “an innovative

bioengineer who was creative and observant,” founded Genessee BioMedical, Inc. in 1994, and was the company’s CEO and Vice President of Research & Development. He was a significant contributor to open heart surgery technology, and invented the Hancock II™ valve, which would become a component of the pacemaker medical device. Mr. Wright was also an avid motorcyclist; upon his passing, Ms. Elliott sold his collection to make a significant gift to the Colorado Symphony, one of his most passionate causes. As a Colorado Symphony donor and Board Trustee, Ms. Elliott’s support for the Colorado Symphony is also a legacy of Mr. Wright’s passion. “The arts are an expression of the human condition,” said Ms. Elliott. “A great city has to have a first-class symphony and a first-class place for it to perform. The Colorado Symphony is doing as much as it can, and it needs to be able to do more, with more support. That’s what it takes to make the Colorado Symphony great: people funding it — and parties like this!”

VeryYoung

Composers

Lifelong learning begins with your Colorado Symphony! All ages enjoy visiting the Symphony and we've created unique educational programs for youth. Programs like Very Young Composers. Take a look inside our Very Young Composers program — giving students with little-to-no musical training the opportunity to be more than just an observer. Colorado Symphony teaching artists work with elementary school students to create original pieces of music that are then performed in their school, community, and at Boettcher Concert Hall. Very Young Composers was started in 1995 by Jon Deak, then-composer in residence with the Colorado Symphony, and is now an internationally-recognized program. We are proud to present the work of these young composers. Discover the region's premier symphony orchestra through active participation in our youth education and outreach programs at coloradosymphony.org/education.

COLORADO SYMPHONY One of the leading orchestras in the United States, the Colorado Symphony performs more than 150 concerts annually at Boettcher Concert Hall in downtown Denver and across Colorado. Every season, the Colorado Symphony serves more than 250,000 people from all walks of life, performing a range of musical styles, from traditional to contemporary. Recognized as an incubator of innovation, creativity, and excellence, the Colorado Symphony continually expands its reach through education, outreach, and programming. The Colorado Symphony partners with the state’s leading musical artists, cultural organizations, corporations, foundations, sports teams, and individuals to expose diverse audiences to the transformative power of music.

TRACKSUIT WEDDING Fun. Excitement. Pure Entertainment. These are the hallmarks of a Tracksuit Wedding concert experience. An evening with Tracksuit is a unique experience in Colorado’s music scene. The band also played three major music festivals in 2015 and released their first original album in 2016.

Pappy Van Winkle 6 Bottle Vertical VALUE DONOR

PRICELESS APPLEJACK WINE & SPIRITS

Add the rare Pappy Van Winkle vertical to your bourbon collection, including every Van Winkle whiskey, from the “baby” 10-year to the Pappy 23-year. With approximately 7,500 cases are produced each year, Pappy Van Winkle bourbon has become as famous for its scarcity as it is for its smooth flavor. For a quick comparison, consider that a company like Jim Beam or Jack Daniels makes 7-8 million cases a year. A 2014 batch barrel of Pappy Van Winkle won’t be ready for consumption for a decade at the earliest. The Old Rip Van Winkle Company is still operated by Julian “Pappy”Van Winkle’s ancestors today and is best known for its recipe that replaces the rye with wheat, which gives the liquor a smoother, softer taste and allows it to age gracefully. The odds of finding this at your liquor store are slim to none. Speak to anyone who has been lucky enough to try it and you’re likely to get similar feedback; it’s the best they’ve ever had, hands down! DETAILS
