Welcome to the 2024 Colorado Symphony Centennial Gala
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2024 Colorado Symphony Centennial Gala! It isn’t often that an organization has the opportunity to celebrate one hundred years and we are so glad that you are here with us for this historic evening.
There felt like no more appropriate way to honor our Centennial than to feature our very own Colorado Symphony Musicians performing as soloists throughout the evening. Tonight’s performances will be led by Resident Conductor Christopher Dragon and feature our very own Concertmaster, Yumi Hwang-Williams, Principal Harp, Courtney Hershey Bress, and Principal Trumpet, Justin Bartels. To close the evening we will hear from Broadway vocalist and Colorado native Sierra Boggess.
Additionally, I am so honored that we are awarding the Margaret Phipps award tonight to the Butler Family. The Butler family has established a true legacy through service & philanthropy and have been amazing partners and supporters of the Colorado Symphony. With their support, the symphony has grown to the thriving artistic organization it is today in service of its community.
Leading your Colorado Symphony throughout its Centennial Season as its President and CEO has been a true highlight of my career. The Colorado Symphony is a premier orchestra in the country and Coloradans are privileged to have these world-class musicians performing throughout their Centennial state. We are known for our risk-taking and innovative programing and our community partnerships and strive to be an example of what it means to be a twenty-first century orchestra.
We are all here tonight to commemorate a CENTURY of live symphonic music in your Centennial State and to celebrate our world-class orchestra, whose innovation, excellence, and artistry has elevated the lives of countless Coloradans for the last hundred years.
Your partnership is essential to the future success of the Colorado Symphony. It is only with the support of our community that we can continue to reach new heights, serving over 340,000 people at our live performances throughout the state. We are continually expanding our reach and can’t wait to see what the next hundred years has in store.
With tremendous gratitude, I thank you for joining in tonight’s celebration and for supporting this extraordinary orchestra. It’s going to be an unforgettable night and a bright future for live symphonic music in Colorado thanks to all of you!
Mark Cantrell, President & CEO

THE 2024 Margaret Phipps Award
PRESENTED TO The Butler Family
The Colorado Symphony established the Margaret Phipps Award in 1993 to honor the philanthropic contributions and memory of Margaret Rodgers Phipps. A Denver native, Mrs. Phipps was celebrated throughout Colorado for her remarkable devotion to the arts community. She served two terms as the president of the Denver Symphony Association and was a passionate advocate of music and the arts.
This year, the Colorado Symphony proudly presents the Margaret Phipps Award to the Butler family. At the family’s request, the theme of this year’s award is “Establishing a Family Legacy through Service & Philanthropy.”
In the Butler family’s case, the legacy was begun by Nancy and Jim’s parents, Erna and Brad Butler. As members of the “greatest generation,” Erna and Brad set an example of sustaining their community through contributions of time, expertise and financial resources. Both served their country during World War II (Brad in the Navy, Erna as a sergeant in the US Marine Corps). Toward the end of a successful business career, Brad turned his attention to early childhood education. Through the Committee for Economic Development, which he chaired, Brad helped build a national consensus around the importance of early childhood education. In Colorado he worked with Governor Romer to establish Bright Beginnings. Erna worked with the Salvation Army and the Shut-in Society in Cincinnati and served on the boards of Central City Opera and the Colorado Symphony Association. An ardent lover of the symphony and its musicians, Erna received the Margaret Phipps award shortly after her passing in 2012.
Nancy and Tony Accetta and Jim and Sharon Butler have done their best to build on that legacy through support of our symphony and other cultural and human service organizations. Nancy served as chair of the Bright Beginnings board and currently
COLORADO SYMPHONY CENTENNIAL GALA 4
is chair of the symphony’s Women of Note. Tony served on the boards of Boys Clubs (New York and Denver) and Operation Walk, and he currently serves as a symphony trustee and chair of the Education Committee. Jim has served on the boards of Servicios de la Raza, Mile High United Way and Swallow Hill Music Association (chairing the latter two) and currently serves as a symphony trustee and treasurer. Sharon serves on the board of Warren Village and has been a volunteer tax return preparer for AARP for a decade.
The next generation is enjoying the satisfaction of following the path of thoughtful giving. Among them they have volunteered for World Teach, the Saint Bernard Project, Foundation Music School, Bright Beginnings, Reading Partners of Colorado, Girls on the Run, Food for Thought, Denver Health and the US Marine Corps (Kevin will proudly acknowledge that he was outranked by his grandmother).
The family has asked us to express their deep appreciation for being this year’s recipient of the Margaret Phipps award. They have also asked us to emphasize that collectively they are just one example of the many families in Colorado that share their personal success to create the greatest possible legacy—a thriving community.

She has collaborated with the Joffrey Ballet (Chicago) in a world premiere of Bold Moves, with ten performances of Adès’ Concentric Paths for violin and orchestra choreographed by Ashley Page. The Colorado Symphony presented the world premiere of Rising Phoenix, violin concerto written for Yumi by Daniel Kellogg in 2016. In 2018, PENTATONE label released 2 disc centennial celebration of Isang Yun’s music with Yumi, Dennis Russel Davies, and The Bruckner Orchestra Linz (Austria) of the Violin Concerto No. 1, solo piece, and work with piano — a culmination of a decade-long project of Korea’s most controversial composer.
