SPECIAL PROGRAM NOTES ABOUT ‘A LIGHT IN THE VOID’ A LIGHT IN THE VOID began as an open question from the Colorado Symphony: what would we do if we had ONE NIGHT to play whatever we wanted with a full Orchestra? What would we do if given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to express our deepest emotions through the raw, seismic power of a world-class symphony? What would we say? What would we talk about? The answer was easy... Science. This word immediately conjures up impressions and images in the mind, and so it is almost universally thought of a class of information that we learn in school... a type of genre. But it’s not! In fact, you will never hear the word “science” spoken anywhere in this show. Science is a way of thinking… a way of interrogating the world around us to determine what is true and what isn’t… a way of thinking that allows us to know what’s really out there in the darkness. It sheds light on our deepest questions… even if the answers are incomplete, indecipherable or even disturbing. This way of thinking was, perhaps, the greatest gift that we inherited from those who came before us. For Austin, this gift was an inherited curiosity for the world, modeled and nurtured by his late father. For Anthony, it was a sacred gift from his early teachers that gave him identity and purpose as an adopted child from an unknown mother. And so we thought... what if we could express the life-changing gift of the scientific way of thinking? How could we express the profundity and the true reality of science as it relates to us, and everybody else, who are not professional scientists? The show began conceptually as a sort of ‘science variety hour’ in which a succession of scientific presentations were simply set to music. However, this always seemed to fall short and feel unsatisfying. As the idea was churned through our writing process, a spark was uncovered: what if the science became allegorical, and the outward face of the show was a narrative theater piece built on a coming-of-age story? The story of science itself then becomes a parallel to our own collective awakening. The terrors of the unknown, and how we can conquer that fear, become a shared experience through an audience proxy on-stage. From that spun A LIGHT IN THE VOID as it exists today: a story of a young girl (The Seeker) as she encounters a series of characters (all played by the legendary actor Troy Baker). These characters mirror so many in our own lives: some of them are helpful, some of them are downright jerks, and some of them are sage-like in their wisdom and expertise... but all of them are teachers, guiding us towards a deeper understanding of the universe. The culmination of these scenes is a series of encounters with real-world scientists, who share their incredible depth of personal experiences probing the mysteries of reality. In the grand tradition of large-scale oratorios and operas, the whole journey is underscored by the orchestra. This is by far the most personal project for both of us… it is the culmination of over twenty collective years learning the nuances of storytelling, drama, science and art. We see it, and hope others will feel the same, as a renewal of vows with all that is greater than ourselves. - Austin Wintory and Anthony Lund, Sept. 2018
