WELCOME SEASON
O
n behalf of all of us at the Colorado Symphony, welcome to our 2017/18 Season! I couldn’t be more excited to officially begin my role as Music Director of this extraordinary organization, and look forward to creating many great musical memories together over the seasons to come.
Our 2017/18 Season is absolutely packed with phenomenal talent. We’ll kick off with the world’s greatest classical singer, soprano Renée Fleming, as our special guest on Saturday, September 9. Just three months later, we’ll welcome another living legend, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, for a special performance on Sunday, December 10. Truth be told, we’ll be featuring fantastic soloists all season long. We’re happy to welcome back pianist Olga Kern, violinist Karen Gomyo, and cellist Alban Gerhardt, and will feature our very own Concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams and Principal Trumpet Justin Bartels. I’m especially excited to collaborate with one of my predecessors, former Music Director Jeffrey Kahane, in December. As you flip through this brochure, you may notice that we’ve renamed a couple of our series: “Masterworks” has become “Classics,” and “Pops” has become “Symphony Pops.” We’ve also re-imagined our Inside the Score series as an even more immersive, engaging Ted Talk®-style series called LISTEN/HEAR. While we’ve renamed these series, one thing remains the same: Our 2017/18 Season will feature the best symphonic music ever composed. Here are a few of my personal highlights: The opening weekend of our Classics series pairs Beethoven’s immortal Fifth Symphony with two contemporary American works I think you’ll really love: Kevin Puts’ Millennium Canons, a celebratory fanfare he wrote for the Boston Pops back in 2001, and The B-Sides by Mason Bates, a thrilling piece for orchestra and electronica, which Mason will perform live onstage with the orchestra and me. Another program we’re all proud to present is The Ring Without Words, a symphonic version of Wagner’s epic, four-opera cycle that’s been condensed into an hour-long selection of orchestral highlights. Before we play the piece, we’ll give you a brief, guided tour through the musical themes of the various characters, places, and ideas. It’s some of my favorite music of all time, and I can’t wait to share it with you. As always, there’s much more to our season than our Classics series. We’ll perform film scores for The Nightmare Before Christmas™ and Jurassic Park™ as we screen the movies live, and we’ll pay tribute to such pop icons as Ella Fitzgerald and Prince. In December, we’ll strike up our colorful parade of holiday concerts, including the return of A Colorado Christmas and two performances of Denver favorite Too Hot to Handel. All in all, the 2017/18 Season promises to be our most incredible season yet, and I can’t tell you how pleased I am to embark on this musical journey together. See you at Boettcher! Sincerely,
Brett Mitchell Music Director, Colorado Symphony

Beethoven’s Fifth for Brett Mitchell’s First! Hear Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 5 — a cornerstone of the Classical canon — in all its forceful grandeur at Music Director Brett Mitchell’s inaugural Classics concert. Kevin Puts’ Millennium Canons, a celebratory and optimistic composition written to usher in the new millennium, befits a premiere weekend. Leonard Bernstein once likened Gershwin and Tchaikovsky as among the world’s most “inspired melodists,” and Tchaikovsky’s bold, booming Symphony No. 5 drives this riveting program, conducted by Music Director Brett Mitchell. Kevin Cole, famed for his interpretations of Gershwin, will deliver a peerless rendition of the composer’s intoxicating Rhapsody in Blue, which was inspired by the “steely rhythms [and] rattle-ty bang” of a New York train. Composer and fellow New Yorker Missy Mazzoli, hailed as “Brooklyn’s post-millennial Mozart” (Time Out New York), offers a dreamscape that is as approachable as it is transcendent in These Worlds in Us.

After leading a lauded performance of our 2014 All-Beethoven program, Jun Märkl returns to Boettcher Concert Hall to conduct the internationally praised Colorado Symphony Chorus in Mozart’s immortal Requiem. Ironically, Mozart died before finishing his Requiem, and supposedly wrote instructions for completion on since-lost “little scraps of paper.” However mythical the conclusion of this masterpiece may be, its dramatic and captivating spirit endures. Strauss’ Death and Transfiguration — a tone poem depicting the death of an artist — complements the immortal Requiem in a program that proves the longevity of brilliance.

Stravinsky’s primal The Rite of Spring is renowned for inciting a riot at its 1913 Paris debut. The causes are still debated — was it the eccentric asymmetry of the music or Nijinsky’s shocking choreography? — and the escalation often exaggerated (objects may have been thrown at the musicians, and a bald man’s head was allegedly drummed upon). Nonetheless, this can’t-miss master work radically changed twentieth-century composition. Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, performed by Kirill Gerstein, completes a program of distinctly Russian flair conducted by Music Director Brett Mitchell.

Brett Mitchell leads the Colorado Symphony through works by two Polish composers who could very nearly steal the stage from the Russian great. Lutosławski’s capricious Concerto for Orchestra illuminates every section of the Symphony, creating an orchestra of soloists. Its big sound and contrasting moods are set off by the driving energy of Kilar’s Orawa, which creates lush layers using strings.

Roll over Beethoven: the Colorado Symphony has corralled electrifying pianist Zhang Zuo (“Zee Zee”) to perform the composer’s vigorous and demanding Piano Concerto No. 5. Zee Zee, dubbed “full of enthusiasm and glamour, radiating the vigor of youth” by Chinese Gramophone, is just the firebrand to live up to the wiles of the majestic “Emperor” concerto. Principal Guest Conductor Andrew Litton will lead the orchestra in Shostakovich’s massive, volatile Symphony No. 11 — a powerful piece full of moody contrasts — for a night of explosive and energizing masterworks.

Maestro Litton revisits Copland’s rollicking piece of Americana Rodeo: Ballet in One Act, which Litton recorded and released with the Symphony and was named one of Colorado’s best classical albums of 2016. Masterful cellist Alban Gerhardt joins Litton onstage for a rare performance of Barber’s exceptionally challenging Cello Concerto, while Brahms’ rustic, energetic Symphony No. 2 — the Symphony that put him on the map — is the crown jewel of this concert. EDUCATION
ifelong learning begins with your Colorado Symphony! All ages enjoy visiting the Symphony and we’ve created unique educational programs for youth. Looking for something awesome to do in Denver? Why not get your scout troop, school, or club involved with the Colorado Symphony? Discover the region’s premier symphony orchestra through active participation in our youth education and outreach programs. We are pleased to provide these programs and look forward to seeing all of you this season!
COLORADO SYMPHONY KIDS GRADES 3-12 We’re saving a seat for young audiences at Boettcher Concert Hall. Each year more than 30,000 students in grades 3-12 engage with the Colorado Symphony to learn about and experience the exciting, enriching world of symphonic music. PETITE MUSIQUE PRESCHOOL This community concert introduces the instruments of the orchestra to young children. Performed by a 16-piece chamber orchestra and narrator, this interactive program includes the musical telling of an age-appropriate story, a sing-a-long, and a live dance-a-long, too. IN-SCHOOL CONCERTS PRE K-2 An ensemble of Colorado Symphony musicians visits your school to present a delightful program of music and storytelling that stimulates children’s imaginations using music as a prominent element of the story. VERY YOUNG COMPOSERS Take a look inside our Very Young Composers program — giving students with little-to-no musical training the opportunity to be more than just an observer. Colorado Symphony teaching artists work with elementary school students to create original pieces of music that are then performed in their school, community, and at Boettcher Concert Hall. Very Young Composers was started in 1995 by Jon Deak, then-composer in residence with the Colorado Symphony, and is now an internationallyrecognized program. We are proud to present the work of these young composers. LEARN MORE Learn more about these and other programs at coloradosymphony.org/education.
