üneş çekilmek üzere. Safari aracı altın gibi parlayan akasya ağacının yanından geçiyor. Yağmur mevsimi olduğundan Seronera Nehri’nin kolları iyice kabarmış. Başımın üzerindeki dala bir sarıasma kuşu kondu ve flütü andıran sesiyle yavrularını çağırıyor. Uzun otların arasındaki ceylan hiç istifini bozmadı. Huzurlu bir Japon bahçesinde gibiyim. Ne büyük yanılgı. Bu sakinliğin iyiye alamet olmadığını benden başka herkes biliyor. Ağaca tünemiş etobur, heyecanlı bir bekleyiş içine girmiş bile. Avının sıcaklığını şimdiden damarlarında hissediyor. Serengeti’ye akşamın çökmesi, bazılarına av ve ziyafet zamanının geldiğini müjdeliyor.
he sun is about to set. Our Safari vehicle passes by an acacia tree shining as if it were made of gold. The branches of the Seronera River swell due to the rain season. A golden oriole lands on the branch just above my head and starts to sing like a flute, calling its nestlings. The gazelle stands still amid long grass. I feel as if I am in a serene Japanese garden. What a delusion… Everyone but me knows that such calmness is not a good omen. A carnivore perched on the tree anxiously waits, already feeling the warmth of its next victim in its veins. As the night descends on the Serengeti, the time for hunting and feasting begins.

“Dünyanın en zengin ‘vahşi hayvan deposuna’ ayak basmak biraz ürkütücü değil mi?” diye soruyor yerli rehberim. Tanzanyalılar açık yürekli ve güvenilir özellikleriyle tanınıyor. Benim de yalan söyleyecek halim yok. İtiraf ediyorum. Serengeti Ovası, Afrika’nın doğusunda, Tanzanya sınırları içinde kalıyor ve komşusu Kenya’daki Masai Mara Milli Parkı’yla birleşiyor. Bu sayede milyonlarca hayvan iki ülke arasında sınır tanımadan özgürce yaşıyor. Bu bölge kıtanın en sıradışı topografyasına sahip. Tanzanya’da 100 farklı etnik grup yaşıyor. Tanganyika Nehri’nin geçtiği Büyük Rift Vadisi, Kenya ile paylaştığı Afrika’nın en yüksek dağı 5,892 metrelik Kilimanjaro, daha güneyde Ngorongoro Krateri ve Serengeti Ovası turistleri mıknatıs gibi kendine çekiyor. “Stepping your foot on world’s richest ‘wild animals vault’ feels a little eerie, doesn’t it?” asks my guide. Tanzanians are known to be openhearted and trustworthy people. And I cannot tell a lie. So I confess. Serengeti Plain is in Tanzanian territory, at the east of Africa, converging with Masai Mara National Park in neighboring Kenya, enabling millions of animals to live freely without any borders. The topography of the region is the most exceptional in the whole continent. Tanzania is the homeland for a hundred different ethnic groups. The country is a tourist magnet with The Great Rift Valley and Tanganyka River crossing it, Klimanjaro Mountain towering 5892 meters above the Kenyan border, the Ngorongoro Crater to the

Her sene bu coğrafyaya göç edenler arasında Namibya’nın flamingoları, Asya ve Avrupa istikametinden gelen leylekler kalabalık sürülere sahip olsa da, Afrika antilopları ve zebra sürüleri sayısal üstünlüğü elden bırakmıyor. Turistlerin aksine güneşin değil yağmurun peşinde koşan bu göçebe sürüler, Serengeti’de kuraklık başladığında (ağustos-eylül-ekim) Masai Mara Milli Parkı’nın hâlâ canlı ve leziz otlarının kokusunun peşinde kuzeye doğru maratona başlıyor. Bir milyon antilop, bir o kadar zebra ve çeşitli boynuzlular bu yolculukta ne yazık ki yalnız değiller. Her attıkları adımı aslan, çita, leopar gibi etoburların izlediği yetmezmiş gibi, bir de leş meraklısı sırtlan ve akbabalar ile mücadele etmek zorundalar. Vahşi doğanın çarkı dönüyor, herkes kendi payına düşenin peşinde. Saat yönünde ve toplam 800 kilometre yol ve çeşitli nehirler aşan sürüler, yaklaşık 15 kilometrekareye yayılan Serengeti Milli Parkı’nda devamlı hareket sağlayarak, doğal yaşamın dengesini korumayı başarıyor.
HAKUNA MATATA (KAFANA TAKMA)
Gözlerimin önünde sınırsız bir düzlük ve çok az sayıda ağaç var. Hayvanları görmek çok kolay. Afrika’nın hiçbir yanında görmediğim kadar çok antilop ve zebra, karınca sürüleri gibi etrafa yayılıyor. Ayaklarımın altından koşarak geçen vahşi hayvanların çıkardığı uğultu gök gürültüsünü andırıyor. Oysa gökyüzünde tek bir bulut bile yok. Onun ye-

Beach bums and history enthusiasts head to Zanzibar, which is famous for its Stone Town and varied spices or to Pemba Island where one can find the finest restaurants of the region. But these people are not the only ones who get carried away by the beauties of Tanzania. Thousands of Namibian flamingos and storks from Asia and Europe migrate here every year, although herds of antelopes and zebras still hold the majority. While tourists are chasing the sun, these migrating herds follow the rain and as the dry season (August, September, October) begins in Serengeti, they all head to the north, to the green and fresh pastures of Masai Mara. Millions of antelopes and zebras and other hoofed mammals are unfortunately not alone in this long journey. While they are being pursued closely by lions, cheetahs, leopards and other predators, they also have to cope with scavengers like hyenas and vultures. As the tide of the wild nature turns, every creature has to get its share. Herds travel more than 800 kilometers clockwise and cross many rivers, keeping the balance of the ecosystem over the 15 square kilometers of the Serengeti National Park.

rine rengârenk balonlar süzülüyor sıra sıra. Benim içinde bulunduğum iyice yükseldi. “Atalarımız boşuna ‘sonsuzluğa uzanan topraklar’ anlamına gelen Siringit ismini vermemiş” diyor rehber Mosi. Mama ise “en fazla hayvanı Seronera vadisinde görürsün ve bunun da en iyi yolu senin yaptığın gibi balonla tepeden bakmak” diye ekliyor. Parkın tam merkezindeki vadi sulak ve diz boyu çayırla dolu. Gerçekten de etrafta yüzlerce zürafa, buffalo, kuyruğu daima dik duran Afrika domuzu var. Her ne kadar uzun otlar arasında saklanıyor gibi görünseler de koruma içgüdüsüyle civarda iri bir kedi arıyorum. Yüzümdeki endişeyi fark eden rehber: “Hakuna matata, engel olamazsın mutlaka onlar da bir gün yem olacaklar” diyor ve bana kuyruklarının üzerinde M harfine benzer bir leke taşıyan Afrika antiloplarından ‘impalaları’ gösteriyor: “Bunlar vahşi hayatın McDonald’s şubeleri. Kediler onları çok sever, gerilerindeki M harfi de doğal reklam afişleri.” Anlaşıldı, benim de artık oyunu kuralına göre oynamam gerek. Serengeti gibi dünyanın sayılı vahşi hayvan rezervinin bulunduğu bölgeye gelip, balon safarisi yapma ayrıcalığına erdikten sonra duygusal davranmak gibi bir lüksüm kalmamalı. Alıyorum dürbünü elime. Sanki o sırada içimden geçenleri birileri duydu. Şimdiye kadar ağacın gölgesinde miskin miskin yatan aslan, birden bire fırlayıp ileride otlayan antilopu bir çırpıda devirdi. Mosi lafı hemen ağzıma tıkıyor: “Belli ki bu aslan aç ve bitkin. Buna rağmen avını hemen yememesinin tek nedeni arkasında sakladığı yavruları.” O sırada iki aslan parçası, otların arasından oynaşarak çıkıp akşam yemeklerinin tadına bakmaya geliyor. Anne aslan kenarda yavrularını seyrediyor. Hayvanın sarı gözlerine bakarken içimde uyanan şefkat duygusuna ben bile şaşırıyorum. Afrika’nın havasına kapılmak bu olsa gerek.
of ants. The humming noise of galloping animals thunders beneath my feet. Yet there is not a single cloud in the sky. Instead, colorful balloons float in rows. The one I am riding in rose very high. “Our ancestors called these lands Siringit, meaning ‘the endless lands’ for a reason,” explains our guide Mosi; “Mama, you will see more animals at Seronera Valley and the best way to watch them is from above, just as you do.” The valley at the center of the park is marshy and the grass is knee high. There are hundreds of giraffes, buffalos and warthogs with their upright tails. Although they look safe among the grass, I check to see if there are any large cats around. Noticing the worried expression on my face, the guide says “Hakuna matata. You can’t stop it. They will be hunted sooner or later” and he shows me the impalas with M shaped spots on their tails: “These are the McDonald’s of wildlife. Big cats love them. And the M shaped spots on their backs are their natural banners.” The point is taken! I have to play by the rules. After coming to the Serengeti for a balloon safari, one of the richest wild animal reservations in the world; there is no need to be sentimental. As I pick up the binoculars, a lion that has been sleeping under a tree suddenly starts up, as if it heard me, and takes down one of the antelopes grazing up ahead. Mosi cuts in saying, “It is obvious that this lion is hungry and very tired. The reason why she doesn’t eat it right away is her babies hiding behind her.” Just then two baby lions come to taste their dinner while their mother sits aside, watching them. The compassionate feeling that emerges as I look in the animals’s hazel eyes startles me.

WILD CHIC
Rüzgâr bizi daha batıya, Grumeti hayvan rezervine ve timsahlarıyla meşhur Grumeti Nehri yakınlarına savurmaya başladı. Balon safarisinde her zaman olduğu gibi karadan iki 4X4 araç bizi takip ediyor. Nehir kenarına geldiğimizde alçalmaya başladık. Rüzgârın yönüne göre ilerleyen balonun nereye gideceğini kimse önceden tayin edemiyor. Arabayla bizi takip eden destek ekibinin işi oldukça zor. İneceğimiz yer son anda belli oldu ama hazırlıklar kusursuz. Portatif masalara beyaz keten masa örtüleri, birbirinden lezzetli havyarlı kanepeler ve kurutulmuş baharatlı etlerden oluşan atıştırmalıklarımız diziliyor. Bohemya kristalinden flüt şeklinde kadehler de gelince ziyafet başlıyor. Balon yolcularının çoğu Güney Afrika’da çok tanınan ve safari otelleri arasında artık ikon haline gelmiş Singita grubunun üç ayrı mekânında konaklıyor. Mucizelerin yeri anlamına gelen Singita’nın buradaki amiral gemisi Sasakwa Lodge. Relais & Chateaux üyesi bu otel İngiliz tarzı klasik bir şıklık içinde. Aynı grubun daha yerel dokulara sahip Singita Sabora Tented Camp’ı (Lüks Çadır Kampı) antika ve sıcak renkli mobilyalarla döşenmiş. Aralarında en modern ve şaşırtıcı çizgilere sahip olan Singita Faru Faru Lodge’da Afrika tarzı Zen hava dikkati çekiyor. Burada kalan yol arkadaşım Jane: “Benim Serengeti’ye bu üçüncü gelişim, buradaki ekosistem milyonlarca senedir aynı özellikleri koruyor. Doğal yaşamın en doğal ve orjinal hali buranın dışında nerede kaldı ki?” diyor. Eşi kendisi kadar iyimser değil: “Geçmişte gergedan ve filleri rahat bırakmayan kelle avcılarını unutuyorsun, şimdi de turizm doğal hayatı tehdit ediyor” diyor homurdanarak. Aramızda tek yerli olan Mosi yorum yapmadan geçemiyor: “Turizme ihtiyacımız var, bölgeyi kalkındırıyor ve doğal hayatın korunmasına maddi destek sağlıyor.”
The wind carries us towad the west, to the Grumeti animal reservation, near the banks of Grumeti River, famous with for alligators. As is the custom in balloon safaris, two 4x4 vehicles follow us on land. Because the balloon moves with the wind, no one can foresee where it will land. The task of the ground support team is not easy. Our landing point becomes clear at the last moment but the preparations are perfect. Portable tables are covered with white tablecloths before delicious caviar and spicy beef snacks are served. The feast begins as soon as champagne flutes made of Bohemian crystal appear. Most of the balloon passengers stay at three different sites of the iconic Singita Group, a well known hotel chain in South Africa specializing in safaris. Singita means “the place for miracles” and the flagship of the group in Tanzania is Sasakwa Lodge. A Relais & Chateaux member, the hotel exhibits classical English elegance. Singita Sabora Tented Camp on the other hand looks more traditional and it is decorated with antiques and cozy furniture. Singita Faru Faru Lodge is the most surprising one among the three, with its modern, African-tinged Zen attitude. My friend Jane, who stays there tells me that this was her third time in the Serengeti: “The ecosystem here hasn’t changed a bit for millions of years. Where on earth can we find such wilderness intact?” Her husband is not as optimistic. “Don’t forget the head hunters who used to hunt rhinos and elephants in the past” he says, “now the tourists jeopardize the wildlife.” As the only local among us, Mosi can’t help but object, saying “We need tourism. It helps develope the region and creates financial resources to protect the wildlife.”

THE DEMISE OF THE ALLIGATOR
Onlar tartışadursun ben nehirdeki timsahlara bakmaya gidiyorum. Grumeti’nin ve Mara Nehri’nin timsahları kıtanın en irileri ve aynı zamanda en tehlikelileri arasında sayılıyor. Bir diş hamlesiyle insanı ikiye ayırdıkları söyleniyor. Nehirde gördüğüm birkaç yeşil kafa aksine oldukça uysal. “Henüz erken” diyor grubun timsah uzmanı: “Sen onları bir de haziran ayında gör.” Serengeti’de kurak mevsim başlamadan hemen önce Kenya’ya göç etmeye başlayan antiloplar mecburen Mara Nehri’nden geçmek zorunda. Bu nehrin mutlak hâkimi bu dev cüsseli timsahlardan başkası değil. Özellikle nehrin derin kısmı otoburlara geçit vermiyor. Timsahların dişlerinden kurtulan hayvanlar, bu sefer de doğa şartlarına yenik düşüyor. Her iki durumda da galip, ağır hareketlerle suyun üstünde duran bu soğukkanlı hayvanlar. Otelime dönerken düşünüyorum: Madem bu kadar vahşi hayatın havasına girdim, bu akşam yemekte timsah ızgara denemenin de zamanı geldi. Ne demişler, büyük balık her zaman küçük balığı yer. Kozlarımızı karada paylaşacağımıza göre avantaj bu sefer benden yana. Barbekü kokusu etrafa sinmiş bile. Biraz tuz takviyesi yapıyorum, tadı fena sayılmaz: Sıkı etli ve beyaz bir balık etini andırıyor. Yanında polenta ve Afrika kabağı iyi gitmiş. Garson bir porsiyon daha lütfen!
While they chat, I walk to the river to see the alligators. The alligators of Grumeti and Mara rivers are the biggest and the most dangerous in the whole continent. It is said that with just one bite they can cut a man in two. On the other hand, a few green heads I see in the river look very docile. “It is early” says the alligator expert of our group, “You should see them in June.” Before the dry season starts in the Serengeti, the antelopes have to cross the Mara River to migrate to Kenya. But these gigantic alligators are the absolute rulers of the river and the deeper parts of the river are particularly impassable. The ones who manage to avoid the alligators succumb to environmental factors. Either way, the winners are those calm, cold blooded animals floating on the water. As I walk back to the hotel I think “Now that I’m in line with the wildlife, it’s time to try grilled alligator for dinner.” As the saying goes, the big fish gets the little one. As we are going to settle accounts on land, I got the advantage. I can already smell the grilled meat on barbecue. With a little additional salt, it doesn’t taste bad, almost like a fish with white, stiff meat. Polenta and African squash goes well with it. Waiter! One more please….
