HIGHLIGHTS from 2009

2009Highlights Certified the 30th home in our Build Green Greater Columbia program and we’re about to broaden our program to include many more green homes. Columbia Remodelers members did a community service project for SisterCare early this year and it was named SisterCare’s Project of the Year. Green Building Council held green building classes and the first Green Home Expo this year, thus providing useful information to members and the public alike. At this year’s REGAL Awards Gala held in February, 83 real estate agents and managers were recognized in the REGAL Circle for having achieved over $1 million in new home sales. SMC Biggest Loser - For 9 weeks beginning in April, 8 teams (86 participants) competed in a weight loss competition to lose the highest percentage of weight and raise money for St. Lawrence Place. During the course of the competition, the teams lost a total of over 730 pounds and from donations collected, presented a check to St. Lawrence Place on June 25th in the amount of $8,508.75. Even during these hard economic times, the HBA Golf Classic held in October net profited over $35,000 for the HBA Charitable foundation, which provides scholarships for children of HBA members and helps support local charities throughout the Midlands. In fact this year we contributed $27,000 in scholarships. Completed another year packed with a crazy amount of meetings, educational offerings, networking events, and we’re ready to do it again in 2010. In addition to all this we had a successful Tour of Homes, Home & Garden Show, Home Improvement Show and offered for the first time The Big Deal, an exciting campaign to promote new home sales and we had one of the most successful years ever in our advocacy efforts on behalf of the home building industry. To make all this happen it took an extraordinary effort from many members.

Become a Fan on Facebook!! The HBA of Greater Columbia has a fanpage on Facebook. Become a fan and keep informed of upcoming events, read the latest home building industry news, see pictures from events and meetings and be involved in our social networking loop! HBA Annual Meeting & SPIKE Night The Membership of the HBA of Greater Columbia met on Thursday, November 12 following the Housing Stump Meeting at The Medallion Center. The sponsor for our meeting was The State newspaper. As this was our annual meeting, we held elections for the 2010 HBA Board of Directors. George Delk presented the slate of officers as developed by the Nominating Committee. The membership then elected the slate as presented. Congratulations to those members who were elected to lead the association in 2010, including our new President, David Hilburn. As this was the last membership meeting that our 2009 President, Barry Davis, CMB, would preside over, he gave a wrap up of the year and thanked the many people who helped him over the past 12 months. See his remarks on page 11.

We also recognized our many members who are in the SPIKE Club at this meeting. A SPIKE is any member who has sponsored six or more new members in the association. Members acquire points based on the members the sponsor and how long they remain members. October marks the end of the membership year at NAHB, and we take their numbers to determine the SPIKE Club Rankings (see page 12) and our annual SPIKE of the Year. This year, we’ve determined the Top 10 SPIKES of 2009. See that list, including SPIKE of the Year on page 13. Our next meeting was the HBA Holiday Ball held December 5 at the Embassy Suites Hotel. See our next issue for pictures from that event. Please also see the calendar of events at the back of this newsletter or on-line at www.columbiabuilders.com for upcoming HBA meetings and events.

HBA Gives to Big Brothers Big Sisters Earl McLeod, Executive Director of the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia, presents donation from the Home Builders Association Charitable Foundation to Jennifer Harding, Chairman, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Columbia, Inc., October 29, 2009.

Even In Down Economy, Community Rallies To Aid Harvest Hope Mungo Homes is thrilled to report that the second annual Feed Your Neighbor campaign has raised approximately $370,000, with an additional $15,858 in in-kind donations. These contributions include the generous gift of $100,000 from the Mungo family of companies, which was, again this year, offered as a match to donations from the community. The numbers are especially impressive given the tenuous state of the economy and that the campaign officially runs only one month. Steven Mungo, principal of the Mungo family of companies, said, “With the current state of the economy, we knew that Harvest Hope’s demand would be higher this year, but it

14 www.columbiabuilders.com

would also be more difficult for them to raise money. It was more difficult for us to contribute this year too, but we can’t let our neighbors be hungry as long as we can find the resources to help. May God smile upon their efforts in this time of need.” The Feed Your Neighbor campaign was created in 2008 by the Mungo family of companies in response to a critical shortage at the food bank just prior to the holidays. While the campaign officially runs the month of October, donations are encouraged throughout the year and can be made on-line at www.harvesthope.org.

ELECTED OFFICIALS

S T U MPED!

The Central Carolina REALTORS Association and the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia held their third annual Olde Fashioned Stump Meeting on Thursday, November 12 at The Medallion Center in Columbia. Members from both associations met with elected officials from many different jurisdictions and levels of government at the meeting.

The speaker for the meeting was Dr. Doug Woodward from USC’s Moore School of Business. He gave an in-depth look at the local and national housing market and told us what he believes the immediate and long-range future holds for our market. According to Dr. Woodward, the economy has reached the bottom of this downturn and indicators show that the market is turning up and that this trend should continue. His message to elected officials was to let housing improve without interference and the entire economy would improve with it due to direct and indirect effects.

Thirty Homes Certified in Local Green Building Program The Green Building Council of Greater Columbia is pleased to announce that a total of 30 homes have been certified in the Build Green Greater Columbia (BGGC) program. Through this local program, the Green Building Council of Greater Columbia provides objective, third-party assessment, verification and certification services to help builders receive market recognition for building environmentally-responsible homes, and to help consumers find green-built houses in our market. “The Green Building Council of Greater Columbia is just over two years old and our members are already producing homes to this higher standard of construction,” remarked council Chairman Mike Lowman. “These companies, along with the other members of the council, have really embraced the program and we look forward to certifying more homes in the near future.” The most recent certified homes came from three companies. Thirteen homes

were built by Inspired Communities in the Hampton Forest neighborhood located off of Garners Ferry Rd. in Columbia. Paradime Construction Inc. completed their second home in the BGGC program. It is located in Lexington, SC on the shores of Lake Murray. This home is also Energy Star® certified. And Carolina Log Center built a log home in Winnsboro, SC that is rated Gold in the local program and in the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) Green program. It is also an Energy Star® certified home.

Gold. Homes that are certified in the program are listed on the Council website at www.columbiagreenbuilde rs.com and are marked with the Build Green Greater Columbia logo on the main electrical panel box door.
